As the 2023 holiday season commences, Fort Hays State University’s annual toy-building event is approaching quickly.

The 34th-annual Fred Ruda’s Teaming up for Tots event is set for at the Center for Applied Technology at Fort Hays State University. This year, volunteers from the community will build more than 150 wooden riverboat toys that will be distributed to children in need in our community.

Students in the Department of Applied Technology have designed the toy and all the processes, jigs, and fixtures needed to produce the toys on a mass scale. Community members are asked to volunteer to run a station. Jobs include but aren’t limited to running machinery, moving pieces from one part of the assembly line to another, gluing and assembling parts, sanding and applying oil finish to the production toys.

“This is one of the best opportunities for our students to give back to the community,” said Zach Pixler, assistant professor of Applied Technology. “Not only do they learn more about the manufacturing process, they get to flex their creative muscles a bit and see the positive impact that their hard work has on those around them. This year’s riverboat toy is really cool, and I’m excited to see them all come together on our line!”

Building will commence at 9 a.m. and will be completed by lunchtime. Join us for coffee and doughnuts before the event and pizza after the build. All ages are welcome. No sign-up is necessary. Just bring safety glasses and be ready to build.

ELLIS COUNTY —One person was injured was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Thursday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford Escape driven by Sheyla Adrienne&nbsp;Mallery, 18, Littleton, Colorado, was traveling on the U.S. 183 Bypass at 240th Avenue.&nbsp;

The driver&nbsp;failed to yield the right of way from a stop sign. An eastbound 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Summer Beth Harris, 42, Hays, struck Ford.

EMS transported&nbsp; Mallery to Hays Medical Center. Harris was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Woman hospitalized after crash on 183 Bypass

Hays Middle School students will present a one-act play at the Hays Public Library during the Hays Art Walk on Saturday.

The performance, “You’re Driving Me Crazy,” is a series of four short comedies by Todd Wallinger that spoof driver’s education training. Two performances are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Trish Davies room on the second floor of the library. No admission will be charged for the performance, which should last around 30-40 minutes.

Bill Gasper, a retired journalism teacher at Hays High School and current director of the Hays High spring play, is directing the students in what might be the first time (or at least in recent history) that the middle school has presented a public performance.

“I enjoy working with students in theater and volunteered to see if we can get a program started at the middle school,” Gasper said. “My goal was to provide middle school students with an interest in theater the opportunity to perform in front of people. Initially, we had a number of students who expressed an interest, but for one reason or another decided to bow out. The 11 students who decided to stick with it have done a good job overall.”

Those students include eighth-graders Ella Fenwick and Caleb Nicholas, seventh-grader Sarah Niehaus, and sixth-graders Isabella Anderson, Braelyn Dumler, Annelise Buller, Adelyn Williams, Augusta Green, Kadence Farr, Lillian Kuhl and Ava Breit.

“I admit it has been a bit different working with middle schoolers,” Gasper said. “They bring a different level of energy to each rehearsal. It’s been a fun experience for me, and I’m hopeful the kids have enjoyed it as well.”

Although he was hoping for a little more student interest, Gasper said things actually worked out very well.

“A smaller group has been much more manageable in regard to rehearsals, rehearsal space, scheduling and so on,” he said. “Sometimes it’s best to start out small and see if interest grows in the future.”

In addition to Saturday’s performance, the group was also scheduled to perform in front Karen Nowak’s communications classes at the middle school.

“Mrs. Nowak has graciously allowed us to rehearse in her classroom after school, which as a former teacher, I know can be a bit inconvenient,” Gasper said. “I also want to thank Tom Albers and the office staff at the school for their support as well as the Hays Arts Council and Hays Public Library for giving us this opportunity. The USD 489 Foundation also deserve a round of applause for providing us the funds to pay for books and royalties.”

Cheers to a new chapter in town as Club Liquor promises a refined collection of wines, spirits and the coldest beers in town.&nbsp;

Originally from India, Ritesh Patel relocated to Hays almost two decades ago. Since then, he has played a pivotal role in local businesses, such as Tiger Mart, Golden Ox Truck Stop and House of Vaporz.

Club Liquor, 717 Vine St., welcomed its first customers on Oct. 28,. Patel said it was a successful opening.

"It was great. We set records that we've never done at the other stores, and the response has been great too," he said.

Patel said he couldn't offer as many products as he desired in his small store. When the opportunity arose with the available building on Vine Street, he saw it as a chance to expand and bring something new to the south side of Hays.

"I wanted to purchase this to fix it up so people are proud to come to the south end of town and think it's a nice area," Patel said. "A lot of buildings are old, so people might not be comfortable with shopping. I wanted to make it attractive for people."

Additions to Patel's inventory now include scotch whiskeys and an array of high-value wines, offerings that were not available before.

Other liquors offered include tequilas, vodkas, gin, as well as rum.

Manager Juan Coca said there are a limited amount of certain beverages in circulation but emphasized that all their products will be available on their sales floor for customers.

"We're not going to hide it behind the counter. We're going to put everything out on the shelf and available for everyone," Coca said.

Club Liquor extended its selection to include non-alcoholic beverages and both non-alcoholic variants of popular domestic beers as well as non-alcoholic India Pale Ale.

"You still have to be 21 and older to purchase a non-alcoholic beverage, but the idea is for somebody that doesn't want to consume alcohol for the holidays when families visit or in general, we have options for them too," Coca said.

For several years, Patel, a parent, has been dedicated to steering underage individuals away from acquiring age-restricted items. The most common occurrences of fake IDs are at Tiger Mart and House of Vaporz.&nbsp;

"I've been running convenience stores for 15 years, and we sell tobacco so we have always IDed," he said. "They look real, but we're used to doing this for a long time, so it's kind of second nature to us."

Patel has made donations to Hays High and Thomas More Prep-Marian.

Patel credits Coca for being able to establish Club Liquor along with his other long-time employees.

"I have seven employees that I've had for four years, and I really have to give it to them because I just come up here for 20 to 30 minutes a day," he said.

Coca takes pride in fostering inclusivity, aiming to create a welcoming environment for anyone who speaks Spanish at Club Liquor.

"We're surrounded by a wonderful community and businesses aiming to spruce up south Vine Street, and as bilingual Hispanic, I personally feel a sense of pride when I'm able to provide service to both English and Spanish-speaking customers," he said.

Patel is dedicated to ensuring Club Liquor becomes a well-known establishment in Hays. He said he strives&nbsp;to deliver outstanding service and competitive prices to the community.

"We're local. We support a lot of local stuff, and we're going to be here for a long time," he said.

The improvement of the customer experience at the store is an ongoing topic of discussion, with a curbside pickup soon to be introduced.

"Speaking of our customers, we'd really like to express our gratitude for their continued support as we strive to remain highly competitive in terms of pricing," Coca said.

Club Liquor is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. on Sundays.

Club Liquor offers south Hays a diverse selection of alcoholic beverages

&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly and Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed announced Tuesday more than $12 million in state funds will be awarded to 16 transportation construction projects across Kansas through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Cost Share Program for fall 2023.

This investment will leverage $7.2 million in community matching funds for a total investment of more than $19 million.

Russell County will receive funds for the Hell Creek Bridge (FAS 420) – Overlay and repairs

“No one can better pinpoint a community’s transportation needs than the people who actually live and work there,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “That’s why we’ve partnered with local communities to invest a total of $19 million in projects that will improve safety, support job retention, relieve congestion, and make it easier to travel across the state.”

The Cost Share Program was created as part of the Kelly administration’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program, or IKE.

Joining Governor Kelly and Secretary Reed for the announcement were representatives from Atchinson and Pottawatomie counties and the City of Baldwin City, all among the funding recipients in this round of Cost Share awards. Each spoke of the program’s benefits to their respective communities.

Enhancements supported in this ninth round of Cost Share included county road improvements, bridge repairs, and safety improvements for roadways and walkways. With financial assistance from KDOT’s Kansas Active Transportation Enhancement, Cost Share was able to fund extra bike/ped projects and extend the reach of the program.

“It was very much evident during KDOT’s recent Local Consult listening tour how much the Cost Share program is appreciated across the state,” Reed said. “Kansans acknowledge how much Cost Share has resulted in much-needed and impactful community-based improvement projects.”

Reed said the Cost Share program has invested almost $140 million in state funding toward 165 projects since the program was founded in the fall of 2019. An additional $100 million in matching local funds has been contributed.

Years ago, I stumbled across an article detailing the creation of a national forest in Finney County in 1906. Organizers planted 1,000,000 trees near Garden City to set their dream in motion. 

For those interested in end results, road trip to the Sandsage Bison Range Wildlife Area and count remaining trees. For native western Kansans, imagining a national forest on our landscape is as much fantasy as the storied golden city of Quivira. However, early settlers following then current theories that rain followed the plow felt certain ample moisture would nurture their efforts.

Later, while researching Ellis Headlight newspapers and vintage pamphlets, I found even earlier references to Kansas Forest Service activities in the late 1800s. In 1887, Kansas legislators established one of two western Kansas Forestry Stations. They located the first in Ogallah, initially in Ellis County, and later Trego County.

Such stations encouraged homesteader dreams of securing an additional 160 acres of land if they committed to a timber claim. This required planting and nurturing 10 acres of trees on their filing, and regional tree stations made such hopes possible.

Over time, Mother Nature did her darndest to defeat such efforts, but if you want to see the remainder of one successful claim, follow Highway 283 south of WaKeeney 11 miles and look east. Note the stand of remaining trees. Do the research and find evidence of other timber plantings.

Initiating this program, Governor Martin appointed S.C. Robb as the first State Commissioner of Forestry. Robb’s duties required him to establish the office and assure appropriations necessary for “planting and growing forest trees in Kansas.”

Mr. Robb immediately secured two parcels of land each of at least 160 acres about a mile and half west of Ogallah just north of Union Pacific railroad tracks. The landowner, County Clerk C.C. Hoar, couldn’t afford to donate the entire acreage so area citizens contributed funds to complete the deal. Mr. Robb then constructed a 15 x 30 ft. barn for $325, an 85 ft. deep well with attached windmill, and 14 x 32 ft. six room and office house for $1,040. For two years, he lived there and ran the forestry station before relocating to Dodge in 1889 to establish the second station.

On April 27, 1887, Mr. Robb and employees prepared and planted eight acres with various deciduous trees They first planted cottonwood, black locust, honey locust, boxelder, Osage orange, catalpa, Russian mulberry, black walnut, hackberry, Lombardy poplar, and soft maple seeds. Their efforts resulted in 500,000 seedlings to give regional residents to plant the following spring.

Yes, the station gave trees to Kansans. The only cost involved transport. Locals picking up orders usually showed up driving a horse and buggy. For those living far away, trains offered another transportation option.

In 1889, Ogallah Forest Station grew 1,960,200 seedlings, adding red cedars, and Austrian and Norway pines to the selection. That year, 4,175 Kansans placed orders. According to Mrs. Fred Shaw, some ordered more trees than they could plant, intending to share with out-of-state relatives. Authorities quickly discouraged this practice.

Appointed in 1907, Mrs. Shaw’s father Francis Ridgway was the last commissioner of Ogallah Forest Station. Commissioners earned a salary of $1,000 per year while laborers earned $1 per day, enhancing the bank accounts of many Ogallah area men for the 25 years the station operated.

PHILLIPS COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Wednesday in Phillips County.

The Kansas HIghway Patrol reported a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Brooklyn Jean&nbsp;Beckman, 17, Phillipsburg,&nbsp;was west bound on Kansas 9 a mile and one half west of Kirwin.

The passenger side tires of the SUV dropped off the pavement. The driver overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle. The SUV entered the north ditch and overturned&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Beckman and a passenger Kyra Maureen&nbsp;Pirotte, 16,&nbsp; Phillipsburg, to the Phillips County Hospital. They were both wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

The Ellis County Commission set out to lower the mill levy
for the upcoming 2024 budget year, and when the final numbers were calculated this
month, that is exactly what they accomplished.

Last week County Administrator Darin Myers informed the
commission the clerk’s office completed the calculations for the
final mill levy for 2024, and it resulted in a drop of .933 mills to 36.642.

The fire district mill levy also saw a reduction of about .6,
according to Myers.

For 2023, the county mill levy was 37.575 mills. The fire mill levy
will drop from 4.007 to 3.406.

“Depending on where you live out in the county, if you live
in the unincorporated areas of the county, you'll see about 1.5 mill reduction,”
Myers said. “If you live in any of the cities — Ellis, Hays, Victoria or Schoenchen — where just the county's mill levy is assessed, you'll see about a .933 mill
reduction.”

&nbsp;Myers said part of
the reduction was a large tax abatement for the transmission line that goes up
180th Avenue to the Goodman Energy Center and to the northeast portion
of the county.

That was a two-phase project with the first portion of the
project being from the Spearville area to the Goodman Energy Center north of Hays, Myers said. The 10-year abatement on the first phase ended this year.
Myers said he thinks phase two, which is from Osborne County to the Nebraska state
line, will end next year.

“Total wise this year, it was about $500,000 in valuation
that will get assessed, and that's why we see about that mill reduction. Next
year, there should be about another $370,000 assessed that will come off our
valuation,” Myers said. “Based on our mill levy calculation now, that would
be about six-tenths of a mill.”

Myers said that is assuming the budget and valuations remain
the same.

County Commissioner Michael Berges said he believes the
commission accomplished their goal.

“We're still going to get beat up a little bit, taxes are
going up, appraisal values have gone up, but I think we still accomplished what
we can do on our end as far as looking at the budget, making some cuts and
reducing the mill,” Berges said.

Two Ellis County firefighters have been named as leaders for the&nbsp;Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs for the upcoming year.

The Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs had its annual conference Nov. 2-4 in Manhattan, Kan.

Elected as officers were President Chad Russell, Andover Fire-Rescue and Vice President Darin Myers, Ellis County Fire Department.

Rusty&nbsp;Lindsay, Ellis County Fire Company 5, was named as a new district representative.

Tim Smith, with the Tonganoxie Township Fire Department, will serve as the past-president. Others appointed as new district representatives were Lester Kaiser Marion County Fire District 5;&nbsp;and Rick Wesley, Barber County Fire Department.

The remaining slate of officers were re-appointed.

2 from Ellis County to represent area with Kansas State Association of Fire Chiefs

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, also known as DSNWK, has been awarded an additional $16,629.00 in community service tax credits at the 50-percent rate through the Kansas Department of Commerce. The tax credits are available to donors on a first-come, first-served basis with donations needing to be made by Dec. 31.

Tax credits are an incentive for donors, businesses or individuals, to give to DSNWK. When applied to your year-end taxes, tax credits will lower the amount of Kansas income taxes you owe.

If the tax credits are greater than the tax you owe, you will receive the balance as a refund. The minimum amount that can be donated to receive tax credits is $250.

“We are pleased to have been given an opportunity to offer these additional tax credits from the Department of Commerce,” said Jerry Michaud, president/CEO of DSNWK. “People who utilize these credits by donating to DSNWK help support us in our efforts to make additional upgrades, repairs and accessibility improvements.”

The “three B’s” coined by Chelsea Reinburg, a fellow K-State Extension Agent, has a great point when she says, “I frame good health this way because it’s easy to remember, but sometimes doing all three is difficult. Doing all three is important, and they all affect our health.”

The three B’s can provide a valuable road map for people who are looking to improve their health without complicating the process.

Most people have heard of the USDA MyPlate and know that it is a visual to show how breakfast, lunch, and dinner should be built.

“Half of your plate should be fruits or vegetables, a quarter should be grains – focusing on whole grains – and a quarter should be lean protein. Then, maybe a side of dairy, for those who consume dairy products,” Reinberg said.

Although it may seem difficult to build every meal based on the MyPlate method, it can play a big part in pursuing better health — whether that be weight loss or managing chronic illness, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. There is also an added benefit in diversifying our plate. Reinburg says, “As nutritionists, we say, ‘eat the rainbow,’ because each color has different nutrients, antioxidants, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals.”

When exercise comes to mind, many people imagine going to the gym, doing intense cardio or even running a marathon.

Instead, try framing your mindset around simple physical activities. This can be a steady 15-20 minute walk or another activity that reduces sitting time and gets you away from the computer, TV or phone screen.

“Being more physically active has some immediate benefits. For example, you may feel like your stress is reduced after a short walk. It reduces your blood pressure, at least temporarily,” Reinberg said.

Long-term benefits include a decreased risk of heart disease or diabetes, lower blood pressure, stronger bones and muscles, and better coordination and balance.

“Some studies have shown that no matter how healthy you are in terms of eating, if you sit for a majority of your day, you are still missing out on the health benefits that physical activity can provide.” Many aspects play a role in holistic well-being, and both nutrition and physical activity are major contributors.

Physical activity also plays a huge role in reducing stress, but colder weather can limit the opportunity to get outside and move. This is why it is especially important to acknowledge stress and to be self-aware of what triggers your stress.

The holiday season tends to increase stress. Family dynamics and finances are just a couple of examples that increase anxiety this time of year. Planning for these situations is important so you can be prepared to handle them. Reinburg advises, “Your plan of action should help to ensure that stress doesn’t get the best of you.”

It is extremely important to learn healthy coping strategies so you don’t continually struggle with anxiety. This is because chronic stress can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. It also takes a toll on mental health and quality of life. To learn more about healthy coping mechanisms, the American Psychological Association website has some fantastic tools.

Regarding the three B’s, Reinberg said, “You don’t have to tackle all three at the same time.”
