GOVE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Thursday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Honda Goldwing driven by&nbsp; Steve Alan&nbsp;Ziegler, 69, Goodland was hauling a trailer eastbound on Interstate 70 four miles west of Kansas 23 in the passing lane.

While merging back into the right lane, the driver lost control and veered toward the median. The vehicle and driver overturned and came to a stop in the median.

Zeigler was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Baalmann Mortuary.

NW Kansas man dies after motorcycle overturns on I-70

RUSh COUNTY—One person was hospitalized after an accident just before 10a.m. Wednesday in Rush County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Freightline semi driven by Brandon John Knipp, 39, Russell, was westbound on Kansas 4 at U.S. 183.

The driver failed to stop at&nbsp; the stop sign and collided with a southbound 2013 Kenworth semi driven by Jeffrey Alan&nbsp;Beikmann, 43, Russell, in the the intersection.

After impact, the Kenworth traveled into the southwest corner of the road and overturned. The Freightliner came to rest jack-knifed on K4 facing Eastbound.&nbsp;

EMS transported Knipp to Hays Medical Center. First responders treated Beikmann at the scene for minor injuries. Knipp was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Russell man hospitalized after 2 semi trucks crash 

ELLIS–In a 5-2 vote Monday, the USD 388 school board voted
to move to the ranks of eight-man football starting in 2024.

The district conducted a community survey and also got feedback
from students, staff and community members before the board made it’s decision.

First-year head football coach Bryant Eichman said he believed both sides presented good points during the lengthy discussion Monday, and it was not an easy decision for the board to make.

“I think what it ultimately came down to was the fact that
it's so hard for us right now with the numbers that we have out to fill the JV
team on Mondays,” Eichman said.

Eichman said they have 26 players out for football this
year, and they have 16 or 17 that will play varsity on Friday night leaving them
with 10, one player short of fielding a starting 11-man lineup.

“We kind of have to bring some of those varsity guys down to
play JV this year, and then you always worry about injuries,” Eichman said. “Then
if those varsity guys get hurt, then how does that affect your team on Friday
nights?”

Eichman, who comes from the junior-high level where they
played eight-man last season and also had eight-man experience at Palco, said he
was prepared to coach the team no matter what the board decided. However, he said he was
happy about the decision.

“I'm happy about the vote because, obviously, I love eight-man
football. I understand that it was a tough decision for the community and quite a few of them are not going to be happy with what was decided,” Eichman
said. 

The 2023 season is the final year of a two-year cycle for
KSHSAA classifications, and schools considering making the change to eight-man
football had to make that decision by Friday. The classifications and district
assignments for the 2024 and 2025 seasons will come out later this fall.

The Ellis Railroaders will compete in the 1A classification
of the 11-man ranks in 2023.

🏈 Ellis to play 8-man football starting in 2024

KANSAS CITY — The University of Kansas School of Nursing has announced the launch of the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center to address multiple crises in the field of nursing. This new center will be housed at KU School of Nursing in Kansas City, Kansas, but its purpose will be statewide — to foster collaboration among nursing stakeholders to address shortages of nurses and of nursing faculty.

“The nursing profession is in crisis, both nationally and in Kansas,” said Sally L. Maliski, Ph.D., FAAN, dean of KU School of Nursing.

Maliski said the problem is on track to get worse as the pandemic’s negative effect on nurses, combined with the number of baby boomers retiring, means that the entire profession is facing challenges at all levels like never before.

“Statistics show how critical the situation is,” Maliski said. “The Kansas Department of Labor’s 2022 Occupational Outlook report shows that by 2026, we will need more than 28,000 nursing assistants, 18,000 registered nurses and 6,000 home health aides. Rural Kansas hospitals are facing nursing shortages that could mean hospital closures."

“As we saw the growing crisis of nurse and nurse educator shortages, we knew something had to be done to address this in a unified and collaborative manner.&nbsp; Also, Kansas was one of only 10 states that did not have a nursing workforce center to help address this critical issue for Kansans,” she said.

KU School of Nursing hosted multiple conversations throughout the state with a wide variety of stakeholders before launching the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center. Amy Garcia, DNP, FAAN, associate clinical professor at KU School of Nursing, will be the center’s director.

“The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center will do things that matter,” Garcia said. “We will help people find their pathway to becoming a nurse. We will develop programs to help nurses find joy in their work. We will study the supply of, and demand for, nurses and provide reports to help communities find and keep the nurses they need. And we will convene schools, employers, associations and government to find better ideas to strengthen nursing and resolve the ongoing shortage of nurses.”

KU School of Nursing has provided initial budgetary and operational support, and it is anticipated that the center will pursue additional funding, including research and program grants, to support the efforts.

The center also will educate organizations and policymakers about issues and policies affecting nurses.

This fall, the center will form an advisory board, with plans for additional expansion of the board in subsequent years. Garcia noted that to make lasting change, collaboration is essential. “These are systemic problems, and they are going to require systemic solutions,” Garcia said.

“Nurses matter,” Garcia said. “People trust nurses to be there when they are sick, injured or simply trying to be healthy. Nurses care for us at the beginning and the end of life. Every Kansan should have access to high-quality nursing care.&nbsp; And nurses should have access to the education and support they need to excel in their jobs.”

Hays Chamber names vice president of marketing and communications

THOMAS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Wednesday in Thomas County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Jeep Cherokee driven by Chloe F. Denomme, 17, Gretna, Nebraska, was westbound on U.S. 83 five miles southwest of Rexford.

The vehicle exited the roadway and then re-entered the roadway and the driver did not regaining full control. 

The Jeep exited the roadway a second time before sliding down the embankment and rolling on its top.

EMS transported&nbsp; Denomme to Citizens Medical Center for treatment of a minor injury. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

After
months of searching for a new location, the Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County ReStore will open Saturday in its new home at 2707 Broadway Ave., Hays

“We are
excited to be back up and running. We’ve heard from our customers that they
can’t wait to start shopping at the store again,” said Leslie Wyatt, Habitat
for Humanity of Ellis County executive director. “One of our volunteers said
before the move that every time we move, the store just gets progressively
better, and I believe she’s right.”

The
store will open with all new inventory, as most items in the previous location
were donated to other area nonprofit organizations or sold.

“We have
had some awesome returning supporters that have generously donated several
items to the store in recent weeks,” Wyatt said. “We’ve got some really nice
items in.”

Items
for sale are often rehabbed by the organization’s volunteer staff.

“We have
several volunteers that have different skill sets at the ReStore,” Wyatt said. “Sometimes
we'll have a piece of furniture or other items that comes in that is missing
something. We have volunteers that will actually take the items and renew them
to almost new for the benefit of the organization.”

Customers
will find those rehabbed items along with other typical thrift shop offerings.

“We
have pretty much anything every other thrift store would have, with the one
exception,” Wyatt said. “I don't know if other thrift stores fix stuff up like
we do.”

With
the new location, the ReStore will expand hours.

“We
used to be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. [Saturday’s], but a lot of garage sales end
around 2 p.m.,” Wyatt said. “And so one of our volunteers had the idea to stay
open until 3 p.m., that way people that are having a garage sale and they
didn't sell everything, and they don't want to put it back in their garage, they
can bring it to us.”

The
new location also has a new feature outside, which she hopes will be utilized by
those in need.

“The Hays
Daily News, they donated some newspaper stands to us,” Wyatt said. “I've had
them for a while in our storage. And I sanded them and painted them and turned
them into the Free Little Library and the Blessing Box outside.”

“That's
something we didn't have at the other store, but I always wanted, so I'm pretty
excited about that.”

The
ReStore is accepting donations. Wyatt said the organization is a good
option for those looking to clean out garages, basements and even whole homes
when needed.

“We’ve
done that before, where we receive almost the whole household of things,” Wyatt
said.

The
store accepts new and gently used household items. However, no clothing, couches,
entertainment centers or mattresses are accepted. 

“We
pretty much will take everything,” Wyatt said. “We still have a receiving area that
used to be like by the big doors at the other ReStore.” 

Supplementing
the smaller building, storage containers are being used outside to
hold merchandise, she said. Retail space takes full advantage of shelving and wall
space to hold as much merchandise as the previous location.

While
the store supports the Habitat for Humanity mission, “to bring people together to
build homes, communities and hope,” Wyatt said a diverse group of residents shop
at the location for different reasons.

“We have
a lot of people that come in that are crafters. We have people that come in
that are treasure hunters,” she said. “But everybody seems to find something
here that they want or like or they can't leave without.”

Sales fund the organization’s Brush with
Kindness or Critical Home Repair program to repair homes for low-income Ellis
County homeowners.

“The
funds are also used to purchase homes within Ellis County that will become
homes for Habitat partner families,” Wyatt said. “Selected Habitat partner
families are given a no-interest affordable loan on a home within Ellis County
in exchange for paying a monthly mortgage, donating sweat equity hours and
maintaining income within the qualifying income ranges.”

for these programs are accepted year-round.

used to be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. [Saturday’s], but a lot of garage sales end
around 2 p.m.,” Wyatt said. “And so one of our volunteers had the idea to stay
open until 3 p.m., that way people that are having a garage sale and they
didn't sell everything, and they don't want to put it back in their garage, they
can bring it to us.”The
new location also has a new feature outside, which she hopes will be utilized by
those in need.“The Hays
Daily News, they donated some newspaper stands to us,” Wyatt said. “I've had
them for a while in our storage. And I sanded them and painted them and turned
them into the Free Little Library and the Blessing Box outside.”<figure>

something we didn't have at the other store, but I always wanted, so I'm pretty
excited about that.”The
ReStore is accepting donations. Wyatt said the organization is a good
option for those looking to clean out garages, basements and even whole homes
when needed.“We’ve
done that before, where we receive almost the whole household of things,” Wyatt
said.The
store accepts new and gently used household items. However, no clothing, couches,
entertainment centers or mattresses are accepted. “We
pretty much will take everything,” Wyatt said. “We still have a receiving area that
used to be like by the big doors at the other ReStore.” <figure>

build homes, communities and hope,” Wyatt said a diverse group of residents shop
at the location for different reasons.“We have
a lot of people that come in that are crafters. We have people that come in
that are treasure hunters,” she said. “But everybody seems to find something
here that they want or like or they can't leave without.”<figure>

Kindness or Critical Home Repair program to repair homes for low-income Ellis
County homeowners.“The
funds are also used to purchase homes within Ellis County that will become
homes for Habitat partner families,” Wyatt said. “Selected Habitat partner
families are given a no-interest affordable loan on a home within Ellis County
in exchange for paying a monthly mortgage, donating sweat equity hours and
maintaining income within the qualifying income ranges.”Applications
for these programs are accepted year-round.To

Hays Habitat for Humanity ReStore opens in new location 

MANHATTAN — Two new grants at Kansas State University will be utilized to help protect global food supplies through the development of vaccines to protect swine and cattle from infectious diseases.

Combined, the grants exceed $1.2 million and are funded for a three-year period by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture through its Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, or AFRI. They will be used to conduct two research projects in K-State's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>.&nbsp; The first project is led by Waithaka Mwangi, professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine, whose research team has developed a contemporary multi-component live vaccine capable of inducing broad protection against multiple Bovine Parainfluenza 3 Virus, or BPI3V, and Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus, or BVDV, strains following mucosal immunization. According to Mwangi, the current BPI3Va vaccine is effective against some, but not all, BPI3V strains; similarly, BVDV vaccines aren't entirely effective due in part to immunosuppressive traits and failure of the vaccine virus to confer broad protection. "These pathogens play significant roles in causing Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex, which leads to severe pneumonia and death of calves," Mwangi said. "There is a need to develop better vaccines capable of conferring broad protection against diverse BPI3V and BVDV strains to improve and sustain cattle productivity." Juergen Richt, regents distinguished professor and university distinguished professor in diagnostic medicine and pathobiology, is leading the second project, which focuses on the African swine fever virus, or ASFV, a lethal disease in both wild and domestic pigs. According to Richt, all attempts to develop safe vaccines capable of protecting against the infection and the disease have been largely unsuccessful. "African swine fever virus is characterized by a wide variety of severe clinical signs in affected animals," Richt said. "In this project, we will test our hypothesis that it is possible to protect against ASFV infection and disease with rationally designed and engineered virus-vectored subunit vaccine candidates. Our vaccine approaches are based on a better understanding of the pig's immune response to ASFV infection, and the virus-vectored vaccine candidates are DIVA, or differentiate infected from vaccinated animals, compatible." David Roswosky, vice president for research at K-State, said the development of these vaccines is of global significance. "K-State researchers are committed to domestic and international collaborations to find solutions to these aggressive diseases, and the university continues to be an international leader in animal health and biosecurity," Roswosky said. Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife area to be discussed by KS Wildlife and Parks

A new century prompted continued development for nation, state, region, and schools. Keeping up with the times, Ellis citizens adapted and steadily promoted education in their community.

The 1901 school year introduced new staff. C.A. Strong served as principal, while Misses McCracken, McGee, Walker, and Harris filled teaching positions. A 15-mill levy funded a 9-month school year. Their first challenge was an expensive state-mandated change of text books. Back-ordered books lead to a multi-week school postponement. 

While several districts started school anyway, Ellis complied with the ordinance. Board notes indicate the expense was great.

To promote graduation, the class of 1901 was asked to organize the Ellis Alumni Association, which still exists. According to Maxine Bradbury, the Association held their first observance in 1902, initiating three precedents the group followed for many years: the senior class presented a program for alumni members, the organization presented a five-dollar award to the valedictorian, and they held a baseball game between the alumni and seniors the afternoon of their observances.

At some point in 1903, community members settled their differences and passed a bond election to add on to the existing stone building. The school board advertised for bidders to furnish labor and material to build a four-room addition. Because of delays, the addition was not completed until the fall 1904 term. The board also upgraded the original building by installing a heating plant. The type of fuel used was not mentioned.

By 1904, staff included Superintendent B.E. Ford, Miss Dale, Professor Griggs, Miss Samuels, Miss Jackson, Miss McClure, and Miss Harry. A new course of high school study was introduced.

In 1905, rumors ran rampant prior to the annual school board meeting because the newspaper editor had commented on reports “circulated that there would be only an eight-month term and that the high school would be done away with.” As a result, supporters of both the 9-month term and high school attended to ensure the board made no such changes. 

Members voted a 17-mill levy for school purposes and an additional 2-mills to pay for the addition and the heating plant. Later, the board voted to renovate the original schoolhouse.

By 1905, academics constituted only part of the curriculum. Baseball games between classes became a popular part of the program. By 1907, the tax levy had risen to 25-mills, and debate had become an active part of course work. 

Because Ellis was a railroad town, teams traveled by train to surrounding towns on the UPRR line to debate topics such as “Be it resolved that immigration to the United States from Asia, Eastern, and Southern Europe should be further restricted by a tax of $100 per emigrant and an educational test.”

Those first five years of the new century reflect multitudinous changes in Ellis schools. The community and region faced similar challenges. Immigration had brought new cultures and ideas to the table. Technology changed every day, complicating and easing residents’ lives. Despite the trials they faced, Ellis and surrounding towns assured their children educations that prepared them for their futures.

The City of Goodland released a statement Wednesday afternoon to residents and the surrounding community:

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of one of our own, Chief Frank Hayes, Jr.&nbsp; passed away from medical complications Wednesday morning, after dedicating his life to serving and protecting our city.&nbsp; He was 53 years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Chief Hayes, known by the community as “Frankie”, served our community with unwavering loyalty and devotion. He was not only a dedicated law enforcement officer but also a trusted friend and mentor to many in the community. His tireless effort to ensure that our city was a safe place to live, work and raise families, is a testament to his true character and integrity."

Fort Larned National Historic Site plans Labor Day weekend living history event   

DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) — A judge ruled Wednesday that a 93-year-old former&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/theodore-mccarrick-ex-cardinal-scandal-989fb97f4f0cad8c4926e8cb795ba2bf">Roman Catholic cardinal</a>&nbsp;is not competent to stand trial after both prosecutors and defense attorneys determined he suffers from dementia, and dismissed charges he sexually assaulted a teenage boy in Massachusetts decades ago.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-religion-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-53924dd479cab20f7a11cb7eb47f686d">Theodore McCarrick</a>, the ex-archbishop of Washington, D.C., was defrocked by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/pope-francis-east-timor-vatican-city-religion-728a5af6ec4d36e54794a761fddd3fc4">Pope Francis</a>&nbsp;in 2019 after an internal Vatican investigation determined he sexually molested adults as well as children. The case created a credibility crisis for the church, as the Vatican had reports from authoritative cardinals dating to 1999 that McCarrick’s behavior was problematic, yet he became an influential cardinal, kingmaker and emissary of the Holy See’s “soft diplomacy.”

McCarrick moved to the St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria in 2018. He moved from northwest Kansas in January 2020.

The once-powerful American prelate faced charges that he abused the teenage boy at a wedding reception at Wellesley College in 1974.

During Wednesday's hearing, a psychologist hired by the prosecution said she found significant deficits in McCarrick’s memory during two interviews in June, and he was often unable to recall what they had discussed from one hour to the next. Dr. Kerry Nelligan said she administered a number of tests on two occasions in June. As with any form of dementia, she said there are no medications that could improve the symptoms.

“It’s not just that he currently has these deficits,” Nelligan said. “There is no way they are going to get better.”

Without being able to remember discussions, he could not participate with his lawyers in his defense, she said.

McCarrick appeared via a video link during the hearing. He was slightly slumped in his chair wearing a light green shirt and what appeared to be a grey sweater vest or sweater around his shoulders. He did not speak during the hearing.

McCarrick has maintained that he is innocent, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-religion-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-fe52aa3c7e9766599b191e14c7360752">pleaded not guilty in September 2021</a>. He was also&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cardinal-mccarrick-abuse-charges-wisconsin-4c931d1ef3faee7819633e5a8435dc17">charged in April</a>&nbsp;with sexually assaulting an 18-year-old man in Wisconsin more than 45 years ago.

In February, McCarrick’s attorneys asked the court to dismiss the case, saying a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine had examined him and concluded that he has dementia, likely Alzheimer’s disease.

Prosecutors say McCarrick would attend family gatherings and travel on vacations with them and that the victim referred to the priest as “Uncle Ted.”Prosecutors say McCarrick abused him over several years including when the boy, who was then 16, was at his brother’s wedding reception at Wellesley College. The man said McCarrick also sexually assaulted him in a coat room after they returned to the reception.Prosecutors say McCarrick told the boy to say the “Hail Mary” and “Our Father” prayers before leaving the room.
