As most Kansans know, whole wheat products provide a great amount of nutrients such as fiber, B vitamins, folate, and more. It is used worldwide in many recipes, and if you pay attention to food labels, you are aware that gluten, a protein found in wheat, is in products you might not expect. In fact, those with gluten sensitivity have to exclude many foods that contain the protein because their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine.

Those with gluten intolerance can experience increased inflammation throughout the body, fatigue, chronic digestive issues, and headaches.

However, breakthrough research from Kansas State University has found a method to develop wheat-based foods that contain lower amounts of gluten. This discovery may lessen the adverse effects for those with celiac or other autoimmune diseases.

Eduard Akhunov, University Distinguished Professor in K-State’s Department of Plant Pathology and director of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center states that gluten likely will never be completely removed from wheat since it is important for bread-making. Gluten provides the texture, flavor and moisture in such products as bread, bagels, and noodles. Even though reduced levels of gluten achieved in this study won’t make wheat immediately safe for those with severe levels of celiac disease, Akhunov says, “It is important to step forward.”

The nature of wheat breeding research means varieties with reduced gluten content may not be available to consumers for many years, but this study will broaden the options available for those with minor gluten sensitivity, and with further research, it could pave the road for developing new varieties that will be safer for people with celiac disease.

Aaron Harries, the vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat, made a good point when he said, “There are many wheat farmers and members of their families in Kansas that have celiac disease. It is ironic and unfortunate that they raise wheat for a living but can’t

eat wheat foods. Most consumers would prefer not to give up wheat foods in their diet. Developing wheat varieties that are consumable by people with celiac disease would make their lives much easier.”

Winkel: Safer wheat products on the Rise: Gluten reduction

Due to the observance of the Christmas holiday on Monday, December 25, the refuse/recycling collection schedules will be altered as follows: Monday and Tuesday routes will both be collected on Wednesday, December 27. Wednesday and Thursday routes will both be collected on Thursday, December 28. There are no anticipated changes to Friday's route.&nbsp;

This is altered from what was published earlier this year.

This&nbsp;Solid Waste Division&nbsp;holiday&nbsp;schedule is different from the other city offices. 

&nbsp;Solid Waste will be&nbsp;closed on Monday, December 25 and Tuesday, December 26,&nbsp;while the rest of the city offices will be closed&nbsp;Friday, December 22 and Monday, December 25.&nbsp;

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclables&nbsp;will be encountered around the holidays. Please be sure to set your bags out by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

City of Hays customers that may have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 785-628-7350.

I haven’t trapped for a couple years now, simply because, unless you skin and completely finish the pelts, and are willing to ship them to Canada to be consigned in the huge worldwide auction there, no good market exists here locally anymore. For the most part, buyers don’t want coyotes at all, but bobcat pelts still hold a little value. Here is a story of a bobcat trapping adventure that went all wrong.

I had several bobcat traps out a few miles west of Inman. The traps had been there long enough and it was time to move them. Besides, rain was forecast for Saturday night, and many of the traps were off the beaten path far enough that if it got wet and I had to check them on foot or by four wheeler, it would take me forever. A busy day was planned, so I got an early start in case hiccups occurred in getting the traps. I was ahead of schedule when I rolled into the last stop. “A few minutes here, then home to a hot breakfast,” I told myself. One of the traps was a cage trap slid back into a pile of branches with a goose carcass as bait, and as I rolled to a stop I could see that the cage door was closed. From my vantage point, branches blocked the view of the entire cage, but I could see what appeared to be a raccoon rustling around in the trap. I grabbed the handgun and headed for the cage, but as I got nearer, I could see that the coon’ had a couple white strips down its back. “Great,” I thought “Just what I didn’t want to see this morning.” Now I remembered an incident a couple years before where I had a skunk caught in a cage trap. That trap was much bigger than this one, so as the skunk put on an acrobatics show climbing and swinging around at the back of the cage, I was able to get close enough to somehow open the door and prop it open with a stick. The skunk eventually left without incident, end of story.

This trap was much smaller, but the morning had been going so well, I guess I figured nothing could go wrong, …. Anyway, I crept up to the trap, quietly talking to the critter as I walked. Skunks are actually pretty laid back especially if the container is covered and you go about things slowly and quietly. Besides, as long as the thing kept its butt pointed the other way, there was no way if could spray me, right? Just as I knelt down, the skunk charged the door, and I was instantly up on my toes preparing to run, but it never turned around and just backed into the rear corner of the cage again. I knelt down again, got as close as I thought I dared, and tried gingerly raising the two steel rings that held the door shut so I could quickly prop the door open and skedaddle. Then it happened... I heard a sort of squirting, squishing sound, felt something hit my face and the scrambled eggs and bacon I could almost taste awaiting me at home suddenly reeked of skunk! (Note to self: a skunk’s butt does not have to be facing you to spray you; they can spray over their back and about any old direction they choose.)

I jumped and ran like I was going to outrun the stench or something. I wiped a couple droplets from my glasses and started peeling outer clothing that might have been hit. I grabbed the handgun and ended the little beggar’s career, then called Joyce to fire up her laptop and find the “cure.” I did a piece on skunks some years ago and my research then told me that the old tomato juice cure just doesn’t work, but Joyce found a mixture that will. Mix together 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda and 1 – 2 teaspoons dish soap (not laundry detergent.) Wipe down your entire body and everything else that got sprayed and then rinse. A warning, clothing cleaned with this solution may discolor. The compounds that cause the extreme lingering smell are called “Thiols,” and are not water soluble, even with soap, but this combination of common ingredients somehow breaks down these Thiols into water soluble

compounds that are rinsed away by the solution. This was tested on an episode of the Myth Busters TV show and found to be the most effective smell removal agent.

When I got home, I walked up onto our back deck, by then, clad only in my underwear, where two hands strongly resembling those of my wife, reached out through the cracked-open back door and handed me a bowl of the magic skunk-be-gone potion, an old ragged towel and washcloth, and pointed me toward the shop in the backyard. I scrubbed myself and washed my hair twice with the solution and all was well.

Besides the lesson that skunks can spray in any old direction they please, I learned a few more things that day. First, it’s never too late for things to go wrong. Secondly, it’s good to know there is something that will actually remove skunk odor, and lastly, I will never again attempt to do a skunk a favor! Continue to Explore Kansas Outdoors

Exploring Kansas Outdoors: Sometimes life just stinks

Hays First United Methodist Church celebrated its 150th anniversary this year, from its humble beginnings to where it is now and to what the future might hold.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that it all started in the most unlikely of places – a saloon.

Sometime in the fall of 1873, the first Methodist church service in Hays was held in Tommy Drum’s saloon. Drum, a well-known saloon keeper, cleared off the bar and covered it with a cloth sheet. Rev. Leonard Bell preached at that historic service.

“How wonderful it was that he would spread a sheet over the bar,” said Mary Meckenstock-Gribben, a longtime lay leader with the church. “How wonderful it was that people knew they needed a place to gather. This was the place they were going to gather.”

Now, 150 years later, members of the congregation were able to wear a blue shirt that bore a graphic on the front that read “It all started in a saloon.” The church logo and the year it was established adorned the back of the shirt, which was given free to church members.

After that first service, different church groups, including Methodists, met in various locations, including the Opera House, for the next several years. In 1878, the Methodist church was formally established in Hays with 13 charter members.

It became apparent a church home was needed, and on March 27, 1887, a frame church on the corner of Seventh and Oak streets was dedicated.

Church membership has grown through the years, and the cornerstone for the current church at 305 W. Seventh was set in 1948. Financial shortfalls delayed finishing the sanctuary, so services were held in the basement. Finally, on Sept. 18, 1949, the first service was held upstairs in the sanctuary.

Meckenstock-Gribben, a wide-eyed 4-year-old at the time, remembered that service.

“As a child, when it was finished, that Sunday morning when we went from the basement up the stairs,” she said, “to see all of that beautiful stained glass and woodwork, it was just amazing.”

The church held two events this year to celebrate the anniversary. In April, there was a reunion dinner with former pastors invited, and there also was a walking tour, with associate pastor Troy Miller assuming the role of a circuit preacher as he detailed the history of the church.

“It’s a milestone for people,” Miller said of the anniversary. “What the walking tour did was help people realize how much sacrifice was made by generations before us, the dedication they had.”

“It’s inspirational to look at the sacrifices and hard work people did before us,” he added. “I think sometimes people take it for granted. We don’t realize we stand on the shoulders of giants of the faith who came before us.”

Church leaders initially also planned a community barbecue in September, but upon further reflection opted to instead have about 100 church members circulate through town and hand out $6,800 in $20 bills, with a note attached.

“We’ve been blessed,” Miller said, “passing it on.”

The church’s current location was influenced by the president of the local college, William A. Lewis.

What is now known as Fort Hays State University had Methodists comprising more than half of its student body at the time. Lewis, a staunch Methodist who knew the church was outgrowing its location at Seventh and Oak, recommended a move closer to the college and include a residence hall in the plans.

Construction of the new church commenced in 1920, and the basement was nearly finished by 1924.

“There was a strong connection between this church and President Lewis convincing them to build it here,” Miller said. “With the help of the visionary leadership of President Lewis, he said this could become the heart of the university as well.”

That residence hall, called Wesley Hall, is now used for classrooms and other educational purposes for church members.

While honoring the past, church leaders also are looking to the future.

“As Hays has changed, so goes the church,” senior pastor Craig Hauschild said. “Multiple generations who have passed through the doors have created different needs for how well we tell the story of Christ.”

“The church has tried to adapt, I think it has done very well,” he added. “We’re talking about what it’s like to move into the next 150 years.”

The church has tried to address what it sees as a need moving forward.

“One of the things that Hays First United Methodist Church has recently taken on, because we see the need is huge, is (serving) the fastest-growing demographic in Hays – Spanish-speaking people, mainly from Mexico,” Miller said, adding many members of that community speak little or no English.

Miller, also the pastor at the United Methodist Campus Ministry Center, has enlisted the help of FHSU students to provide free tutoring as well as free English classes for the Spanish-speaking community. There is a Spanish-speaking church service on Sunday evenings as well.

“That little group is starting to grow,” Miller said. “We’re seeing that if we’re trying to be the church that God’s calling us to be, we need to create a space that welcomes the immigrants who come into our community, and a worship space for them.”

The church’s vision for the future includes how its mission can impact the needs of the community.

“I think it’s interesting how God moves on people’s lives,” Hauschild said.

Meckenstock-Gribben, who was moved by what she saw that Sunday as a 4-year-old all those many years ago, also looks to the future.

“I think our plan is to be mindful of the needs of the community,” she said. “Each of us has different gifts to share.”

Leonard Bell preached at that historic service.“How wonderful it was that he would spread a sheet over the bar,” said Mary Meckenstock-Gribben, a longtime lay leader with the church. “How wonderful it was that people knew they needed a place to gather. This was the place they were going to gather.”Now, 150 years later, members of the congregation were able to wear a blue shirt that bore a graphic on the front that read “It all started in a saloon.” The church logo and the year it was established adorned the back of the shirt, which was given free to church members.<figure>

 </figure>After that first service, different church groups, including Methodists, met in various locations, including the Opera House, for the next several years. In 1878, the Methodist church was formally established in Hays with 13 charter members.It became apparent a church home was needed, and on March 27, 1887, a frame church on the corner of Seventh and Oak streets was dedicated.Church membership has grown through the years, and the cornerstone for the current church at 305 W. Seventh was set in 1948. Financial shortfalls delayed finishing the sanctuary, so services were held in the basement. Finally, on Sept. 18, 1949, the first service was held upstairs in the sanctuary.Meckenstock-Gribben, a wide-eyed 4-year-old at the time, remembered that service.“As a child, when it was finished, that Sunday morning when we went from the basement up the stairs,” she said, “to see all of that beautiful stained glass and woodwork, it was just amazing.”<figure>

 </figure>The church held two events this year to celebrate the anniversary. In April, there was a reunion dinner with former pastors invited, and there also was a walking tour, with associate pastor Troy Miller assuming the role of a circuit preacher as he detailed the history of the church.“It’s a milestone for people,” Miller said of the anniversary. “What the walking tour did was help people realize how much sacrifice was made by generations before us, the dedication they had.”“It’s inspirational to look at the sacrifices and hard work people did before us,” he added. “I think sometimes people take it for granted. We don’t realize we stand on the shoulders of giants of the faith who came before us.”Church leaders initially also planned a community barbecue in September, but upon further reflection opted to instead have about 100 church members circulate through town and hand out $6,800 in $20 bills, with a note attached.“We’ve been blessed,” Miller said, “passing it on.”<figure>

 </figure>The church’s current location was influenced by the president of the local college, William A. Lewis.What is now known as Fort Hays State University had Methodists comprising more than half of its student body at the time. Lewis, a staunch Methodist who knew the church was outgrowing its location at Seventh and Oak, recommended a move closer to the college and include a residence hall in the plans.Construction of the new church commenced in 1920, and the basement was nearly finished by 1924.“There was a strong connection between this church and President Lewis convincing them to build it here,” Miller said. “With the help of the visionary leadership of President Lewis, he said this could become the heart of the university as well.”That residence hall, called Wesley Hall, is now used for classrooms and other educational purposes for church members.<figure>

 </figure>While honoring the past, church leaders also are looking to the future.“As Hays has changed, so goes the church,” senior pastor Craig Hauschild said. “Multiple generations who have passed through the doors have created different needs for how well we tell the story of Christ.”“The church has tried to adapt, I think it has done very well,” he added. “We’re talking about what it’s like to move into the next 150 years.”The church has tried to address what it sees as a need moving forward.“One of the things that Hays First United Methodist Church has recently taken on, because we see the need is huge, is (serving) the fastest-growing demographic in Hays – Spanish-speaking people, mainly from Mexico,” Miller said, adding many members of that community speak little or no English.Miller, also the pastor at the United Methodist Campus Ministry Center, has enlisted the help of FHSU students to provide free tutoring as well as free English classes for the Spanish-speaking community. There is a Spanish-speaking church service on Sunday evenings as well.<figure>

 </figure>“That little group is starting to grow,” Miller said. “We’re seeing that if we’re trying to be the church that God’s calling us to be, we need to create a space that welcomes the immigrants who come into our community, and a worship space for them.”The church’s vision for the future includes how its mission can impact the needs of the community.“I think it’s interesting how God moves on people’s lives,” Hauschild said.Meckenstock-Gribben, who was moved by what she saw that Sunday as a 4-year-old all those many years ago, also looks to the future.“I think our plan is to be mindful of the needs of the community,” she said. “Each of us has different gifts to share.”<figure>

NWester: From its beginnings in saloon, Hays Methodist Church honors 150 years

The Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) Family Career and Community Leaders of America, also known as FCCLA, is thriving and strong in Ellis County and the surrounding areas. FCCLA is the only CTSO with family as its core value.

FCCLA has a chapter at every high school in Ellis County with a Family and Consumer Science class. The chapters at Victoria High School, Ellis High School, and the newly formed Hays High School Chapter have been representing Western Kansas extraordinarily on the state and national&nbsp;level.

Victoria High School has over 78 percent of students affiliated with their FCCLA chapter. Nine of those members serve as officers on the local officer team. Victoria FCCLA also hosts District B secretary Kennidy Amrien and the state vice president of individual programs Benjamin Dome.

Both serve on higher executive councils for the area FCCLA district and the state of Kansas.

Additionally, Victoria had six competitive STAR Events compete on the national level at the National Leadership Conference last summer in Denver. Three of these members, Sienna Schmeidler, Jillian Schmidt, and Averi Whindholz, took fifth in the nation with a gold in the Interior Design category. Victoria FCCLA has also been hard at work in the Victoria community.

Their members planned a welcome-back event for every Victoria Jr./Sr. High School student, hosted an American Red Cross blood drive, collected 200 canned goods for the local food pantry, 15 bags of shoes for poorer individuals, planned and threw a holiday bash for elementary students and their parents, and awarded local heroes for their hard work in the community.

Victoria FCCLA also played a vital role at the District B Fall Leadership Conference in Hoisington. Members Sienna Schmeidler and Sage Moos got on stage in front of members from schools ranging from Phillips and Smith County to Barton County to congratulate members on their completion of the Power of One units.

Kennedy Amerin, a senior at Victoria High School and currently serving as the District B secretary, attended two planning meetings to smoothly plan and execute the District B Fall Leadership Conference. Victoria FCCLA has many plans to close out the 1st semester and kick off the 2nd semester positively.

Victoria FCCLA adviser and FCS teacher Connie Braun stated, “Victoria FCCLA has five members interested in running for various higher office positions, and 18 members working on STAR Events.”

Both elections of officers and STAR Events take place in the second semester. Victoria is also poised to host the 2024 District B Star Event Competitions. 

USD 432 Superintendant and Victoria Jr. Sr. High School Principal Kimberley Woolf stated, “We are so excited to host the STAR Events this year on Valentine’s Day for District B FCCLA. Our teachers will be here to help facilitate the rooms and judge. Some of my standout moments as a principal at Victoria are getting to attend some of these events with students and watching them compete.

"It is amazing to see all their months of work come to fruition when they present to their team of judges. Connie Braun is an essential part of all of this! The kids love her for her dedication and commitment.”

Ellis High School FCCLA is also enjoying The Ultimate Journey. Ellis FCCLA boasts a roster of 40 members. One of which, Taegen Shannon, serves as the current District B president.

Part of Shannon’s role is serving on the State Advisory Council and heading the planning of the District B Fall Leadership Conference, which was hosted in Hoisington in early October.

Additionally, Railers in the FCCLA Chapter have been hard at work preparing for the STAR Event competitions. Ellis FCCLA adviser and FCS teacher Mrs. Nihlas stated, “We have a group hard at work preparing for their competition. We also have a member gearing up to run for a higher office as well.” District elections will be hosted in late January at Smith Center High School.

Hays High School is also getting into the action this year. This will be the first year for Hays High to offer FCCLA in it’s school history. District B FCCLA is happy to have them become a part of the FCCLA family. The entire state association is excited to welcome them into the FCCLA community.

Colby, Scott City residents among Gov. Kelly administration appointments

The Kansas Legislature is teeing up to review campaign finance laws in 2024.&nbsp; It should come as no surprise that such proposals occur against a backdrop of strong public skepticism about their motives.

A recent Pew Charitable Trust poll found that 80% of Americans believe that “the people who donated a lot of money to their political campaigns” have too much influence over members of Congress, while 70% agreed that “the people in their districts” have too little.&nbsp; These supermajorities cut across party lines, and may help explain the rise of “outsider” candidates such as former President Donald Trump and Senator Bernie Sanders. To quote the classic 1976 film&nbsp;Network, the American people are “mad as hell, and we’re not going to take this anymore.”

Congressional campaigns are regulated by federal, not state finance law.&nbsp; However, most Americans do not care about the finer differences between federal and state laws–they simply believe that money has too much influence on politics. Also, Kansans do not have a particularly high opinion of the Kansas Legislature, either.&nbsp; In the 2023&nbsp;Kansas Speaks&nbsp;poll, only 2.8% of Kansans reported being “very satisfied” with the Legislature, and an additional 28.3% reported being “somewhat satisfied.” This total of 31.3% satisfied means that the Legislature’s approval ranks lower than that of Governor Laura Kelly, the Kansas Supreme Court, and Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall.&nbsp;

The current push to change the law stems from a 2022 dustup in Overland Park. Led by Mark Skoglund, the Kansas Ethics Commission investigated Fresh Vision OP, a group that sent out mailers advocating for a mayoral candidate.&nbsp; Fresh Vision OP’s leaders insist that it is a 501(c)(4), a type of nonprofit, but Skoglund suspected that it was actually a political committee.&nbsp; Shortly after that, some members of the Legislature began criticizing Skoglund for letting his law license lapse.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier this year, the Legislature considered HB (House Bill) 2391, which would have rewritten campaign finance law.&nbsp; It did not pass, but they will be back at it this coming year.&nbsp; Unfortunately, HB 2391 contained several provisions which would weaken transparency.

For example, current law requires independent groups to disclose whenever there is a finding of “cooperation or consent” with a political campaign. HB 2391 would have required it only when there is “coordination,” which is defined as “express advocacy.”&nbsp; This is not necessary: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in&nbsp;Citizens United v FEC&nbsp;that campaign finance law may go beyond express advocacy.&nbsp; Narrowing the requirements would create a loophole allowing independent groups to advocate for candidates without disclosing the sources of their funds.&nbsp; HB 2391 would also have removed the Kansas Ethics Commission’s subpoena power, greatly weakening their ability to investigate.&nbsp; Finally, the bill would have created a disclaimer, ““No solicitation shall be considered a violation of this act if such solicitation is accompanied with a disclaimer that it is not intended for lobbyists, political committees or persons other than individuals.”

The simple appearance of this disclaimer, plus the loss of subpoena power, could block the ability of the Kansas Ethics Commission to take any further action.

There are legitimate reasons to re-visit Kansas’ campaign finance laws.&nbsp; Current laws may ensnare a well-meaning candidate whose communication accidentally falls into the hands of lobbyists, when that was not their intention.&nbsp; That said, HB 2391 was a bad bill and should not be revived.&nbsp; Skepticism toward campaign finance is running high.&nbsp; This is no time to make disclosure requirements even easier to evade.

HB 2391 would have required it only when there is “coordination,” which is defined as “express advocacy.”&nbsp; This is not necessary: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in&nbsp;Citizens United v FEC&nbsp;that campaign finance law may go beyond express advocacy.&nbsp; Narrowing the requirements would create a loophole allowing independent groups to advocate for candidates without disclosing the sources of their funds.&nbsp; HB 2391 would also have removed the Kansas Ethics Commission’s subpoena power, greatly weakening their ability to investigate.&nbsp; Finally, the bill would have created a disclaimer, ““No solicitation shall be considered a violation of this act if such solicitation is accompanied with a disclaimer that it is not intended for lobbyists, political committees or persons other than individuals.”The simple appearance of this disclaimer, plus the loss of subpoena power, could block the ability of the Kansas Ethics Commission to take any further action.There are legitimate reasons to re-visit Kansas’ campaign finance laws.&nbsp; Current laws may ensnare a well-meaning candidate whose communication accidentally falls into the hands of lobbyists, when that was not their intention.&nbsp; That said, HB 2391 was a bad bill and should not be revived.&nbsp; Skepticism toward campaign finance is running high.&nbsp; This is no time to make disclosure requirements even easier to evade.

THOMAS COUNTY—Members of the Colby community helped round up cattle after an accident in Thomas County.

Just after 9a.m. Thursday, sheriff's deputies and State Troopers responded to report of a semi full of cattle that overturned on Interstate 70 just east of the K184 Brewster exit, according to the Thomas County Sheriff's office.

Community members volunteered to get the cattle safely off the trailer and rounded up as some had escaped during the accident. There were no injuries reported.

The sheriff's office thanked local farmers and ranchers, Swartz Veterinary Hospital, Thomas County EMS,&nbsp; fire crews from Brewster and Colby, Evan Bottini and Evan Miller with the Colby Community College Rodeo Team, the Thomas County Fair Board and Butch's Body Shop.

Fake shipping notification emails, text messages: What you need to know this holiday season

WICHITA – Smith County rancher Philip Weltmer is the new president of the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA). He began his one-year term in the volunteer position during the group’s annual membership meeting on Dec. 1 in Wichita. Members chose Victoria-native Troy Sander, a cattle feeder now based in Oklahoma City, as the new KLA president-elect. Weltmer and Sander will lead the 5,700-member organization during the next year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Weltmer represents the third generation of his family in the ranching business. His grandparents founded what is now W &amp; S Ranch near Smith Center in the 1950s. Weltmer and his wife, Jessica, joined his granddad, dad and uncle on the ranch full time almost 20 years ago. Over the years, the family operation has grown to encompass a commercial cow-calf herd, small registered Angus herd, feedyard and farming business.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Weltmer has been extensively involved in leadership in both KLA and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). He served as vice chair of the KLA Animal Health &amp; ID Committee and is a member of the Kansas Beef Council (KBC) executive committee. Nationally, Weltmer currently serves on the Federation of State Beef Councils board of directors and is co-chair of the Checkoff Nutrition &amp; Health Committee. He also is the Region 7 Federation representative on the NCBA Nominating Committee. Weltmer is a past chair of KBC and served on the KLA board of directors from 2016 to 2018. He was a member of the 2008 KLA Young Stockmen’s Academy, serving as class chair, and participated in the NCBA Young Cattlemen’s Conference in 2013. He also is a graduate of the King Ranch Leadership Studies Program and serves as president of the Smith County Fair Board.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Weltmer graduated from K-State in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences and industry. He and Jessica have three children, Kaden, Korey and Kaylee.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sander is the chief operations manager for Heritage Beef, which operates feedyards in Haskell and Labette counties. His interest in the cattle feeding industry began early in life as he worked alongside his father, Vernon, who was the assistant manager at the former Hays Land and Cattle near Hays. Sander graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in animal science in 1991 and took a job as a management trainee with Continental Grain Company’s XIT Feeders near Dalhart, TX.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After completing the training program, he continued gaining experience, first as the animal health manager at Grant County Feeders in 1995, then as assistant manager at Colorado Beef in 1999. After 12 years with Continental Grain Company, he moved to Heritage Beef, where he served as general manager at Heritage Feeders in Wheeler, TX, and eventually was promoted to his current role as operations manager. For nearly 20 years, he has been responsible for buying feeder cattle and overseeing marketing, operations and commodity procurement.&nbsp;

Sander has been a KLA member for 25 years and has served the organization in varying capacities. He currently is a member of the board of directors and has served on the KLA Executive Committee and Policy &amp; Resolutions Committee. Sander was chairman of the KLA Cattle Feeders Council in 2020. He also is active on the national level, serving on the NCBA board of directors and as chairman of the NCBA Live Cattle Marketing Committee from 2022-2023. Sander was a member of the NCBA Live Cattle Marketing Working Group as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He and his wife, Lisa, have four sons. Travis and his wife, Carli, have two children, Rory and Kasen. Colten and wife Hayley have one son, Owen. Caden and his wife, Mikayla, just welcomed a new son, Shepherd. Kyle and wife Becca have a son, Jennings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KLA is a 5,700-member trade organization representing the state’s livestock business on legislative, regulatory and industry issues at both the state and federal levels. The association’s work is funded through voluntary dues dollars paid by its members.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The holiday season often means households are using more water than usual.

There are big meals to prepare with cleanup to follow, extra guests and relatives in the house, and the natural Christmas tree which needs regular watering.

Holly Dickman, Hays water conservation specialist, has some tips to keep water usage in check and save on water bills.

• Thaw frozen foods such as turkeys and hams ahead of time in the refrigerator instead of using the "speed-thaw" method in a sink full of water. • Collect water used to rinse fruits and vegetables to water houseplants, including live Christmas trees. • Use the proper size pots and pans for cooking. Larger pots may require more water than necessary for the food being prepared, such as boiling potatoes.&nbsp; • Scrape leftover food from plates into the garbage instead of rinsing the plates or washing scraps down the garbage disposal which can use gallons of water each time. • Use the dishwasher when possible. A full dishwasher is much more efficient than washing by hand. • If you do need to wash dishes by hand, fill one basin with soapy water and fill the other with rinse water. Don't let the water run continuously. • Check toilets for leaks before holiday guests arrive, and make necessary repairs.&nbsp; • Consider installing faucet aerators, low-flow shower heads, high-efficiency toilets and washing machines, all of which can drastically reduce water usage in the home year-round. Several aerator and low-flow shower heads are available free from the city of Hays. Rebates are also offered for installation of high-efficiency toilets and washing machines.

1.5" of much needed rain falls in Hays Thursday; still 1.5" behind for the year

The Hays police and fire departments will be able to purchase equipment and establish foundations thanks to a gift from a Hays man.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4c280d74-6b71-4bee-b04f-039bea66febc">Jack M. Samples, 90, passed away Jan. 30</a>, and in April, his estate donated $155,287 to the Hays Police Department and $37,999 to the Hays Fire Department.

The largest portion of the police department's gift — $47,000 — will be used to purchase new patrol weapons with mounted optics.

 The department is requesting to transition to a pistol-mounted optic system as the primary sighting technology on all department-issued handguns.&nbsp;The technology is more accurate than the iron sights on pistols used currently.

"It's not a new technology, and we already have mounted optic systems on all our rifles," Chief Don Scheibler told Hays city commissioners.

The current trend in law enforcement is to transition to pistol-mounted optics, Scheibler said. The Kansas Highway Patrol is in the transition process, and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is also planning to purchase pistol-mounted optics, he said.

Scheibler also requested to purchase four rifle-rated ballistic shields at a cost of $23,000.

This&nbsp;will allow for a ballistic shield to be stored in each patrol supervisor vehicle&nbsp;and&nbsp;ensure that a shield is always on the street and available to on-duty officers.

"Ballistic shields will allow us to better protect our employees, better protect our community. So far this year, there have been over 450 mass shootings in the United States. It's not a matter of if, but when, this event is going to happen,"&nbsp;&nbsp;Scheibler said.

In addition to active shooter incidents, the shields would be used on&nbsp;calls such as building searches, shots fired investigations, armed subjects and&nbsp; other&nbsp;common patrol calls.

"For just a very small amount of money, it'll increase the safety of our officers a great deal," he said.

A new Hays Police Department Foundation would be established with $40,000 in partnership with the Heartland Community Foundation.

"This would allow us to receive funds and focus on new projects that we can't use budgeted funds for,"&nbsp;Scheibler said.

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays PostThe Hays police and fire departments will be able to purchase equipment and establish foundations thanks to a gift from a Hays man.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/4c280d74-6b71-4bee-b04f-039bea66febc">Jack M. Samples, 90, passed away Jan. 30</a>, and in April, his estate donated $155,287 to the Hays Police Department and $37,999 to the Hays Fire Department.The largest portion of the police department's gift — $47,000 — will be used to purchase new patrol weapons with mounted optics. The department is requesting to transition to a pistol-mounted optic system as the primary sighting technology on all department-issued handguns.&nbsp;The technology is more accurate than the iron sights on pistols used currently."It's not a new technology, and we already have mounted optic systems on all our rifles," Chief Don Scheibler told Hays city commissioners.The current trend in law enforcement is to transition to pistol-mounted optics, Scheibler said. The Kansas Highway Patrol is in the transition process, and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is also planning to purchase pistol-mounted optics, he said.Scheibler also requested to purchase four rifle-rated ballistic shields at a cost of $23,000.This&nbsp;will allow for a ballistic shield to be stored in each patrol supervisor vehicle&nbsp;and&nbsp;ensure that a shield is always on the street and available to on-duty officers."Ballistic shields will allow us to better protect our employees, better protect our community. So far this year, there have been over 450 mass shootings in the United States. It's not a matter of if, but when, this event is going to happen,"&nbsp;&nbsp;Scheibler said. In addition to active shooter incidents, the shields would be used on&nbsp;calls such as building searches, shots fired investigations, armed subjects and&nbsp; other&nbsp;common patrol calls."For just a very small amount of money, it'll increase the safety of our officers a great deal," he said.A new Hays Police Department Foundation would be established with $40,000 in partnership with the Heartland Community Foundation."This would allow us to receive funds and focus on new projects that we can't use budgeted funds for,"&nbsp;Scheibler said.The department plans to use $20,000 to partner with the Fort Hays State University Foundation and establish an endowed scholarship for the FHSU&nbsp;Department of Criminal Justice program.&nbsp;The scholarship fund will&nbsp;help FHSU students pursuing a career in law enforcement obtain their criminal justice&nbsp;degrees and help the police department recruit new police officers. "We like to call the criminal justice department 'the farm.' We continue to harvest employees from out there," Scheibler said. "We think this will be a real investment in the future."$5,000 will go toward updating the Hays Police Department Challenge Coin, which has an old logo. Local officers carry the small coin to promote morale. &nbsp;The remaining $20,287.65 will be allocated to the Public Safety Equipment Fund to be used for equipment needs in the future. The Hays Fire Department also plans to partner with the Heartland Community Foundation and will use $25,000&nbsp;to establish the Hays Firefighters Endowment Fund.The fund will provide&nbsp;scholarship opportunities for the children of active uniformed members and&nbsp;grandchildren of retired uniformed members who spent 20 years or more serving the city&nbsp;of Hays. The scholarship will also be available for Hays residents seeking an&nbsp;associate degree in fire science at a Kansas community college. Both foundations would be entities people can utilize for financial donations to the two departments.Fire Chief Ryan Hagans said his department will use the remaining $12,900&nbsp;to purchase new fire attack hoses and&nbsp;nozzles.<figure>

 </figure>Samples graduated from Hays High School in 1950 and attended one year of college at Fort Hays Kansas State College. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years in the Korean War. Samples worked for about 30 years as an office and field clerk for Skelly Oil Co., Getty Oil Co. and Texaco.
