Get ready to swing for the fences, Hays! The new, local 10-and-under softball team, Rampage, is on the hunt for young talent. If you have a young athlete with a passion for the sport, now is the time to shine! &nbsp;

When:&nbsp;Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30, from 7:00-8:30pm

Where:&nbsp;Bickle Schmidt Sports Complex at Field 4.&nbsp;

No experience? No problem! We’re looking for enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Come dressed in comfortable attire and bring your glove and bat if you have one.&nbsp;

Head coach Sheri Bittel grew up playing softball, watching softball and baseball, and raising children with a baseball coach. This 10U Rampage team was created out of the desire to help young girls develop their softball skills in a fun, but competitive environment. Overall player development is key. Teamwork, softball fundamentals, and player integrity are important characteristics of this team and will be evaluated at these tryouts.&nbsp;

Victoria girls basketball will be hosting a 3v3 tournament as part of Herzogfest activities on Aug. 10 in Victoria.

Play will start at 10 a.m. at the courts next to the elementary school. Cost will be $15 per person with a minimum of three games.

Teams from surrounding areas are welcome.

Please complete team registrations by Saturday, Aug. 3.

1. We will follow MAYB/KSHSAA rules on grades. The grade you were in May 2024 - you will be that grade for the tournament.

3. A couple of the rules differ slightly from the March 3v3 Hays Youth Basketball tournament, so please review.

Victoria basketball to host 3 on 3 basketball tournament

Advanced voting got underway Monday in Ellis County and a
group of voters in the rural areas of the county and Victoria have an extra
question, regarding a county library, on their ballot.

In March the Ellis County Commission approved placing the
question, “Shall Ellis County, Kansas establish and maintain a county library?”
on the August 6 primary ballot.

Voters within the city limits of Hays and Ellis will not have
the option to vote on the question. Both the Hays and Ellis Public libraries
are funded by local taxes collected within each city’s limits.

A 1.5 mil tax is collected by the state of Kansas, for the
Central Kansas Library System (CKLS) based in Great Bend, from residents in
Victoria and rural Ellis County.

The taxes collected in Ellis County by the CKLS total nearly $300,000 annually and that money is distributed among a 17-county
area of north and central Kansas. 

Hays Public Library Director Brandon Hines recently told the
Ellis County Commission that most of the people who have asked questions surrounding
the ballot question don’t know that they are being taxed for libraries and that
the money collected doesn’t all stay in Ellis County. 

“This has been good for an education for just having these
discussions,” Hines said.

Supporters of the ballot question, and the creation of an
Ellis County Library, say that the funding gap between the amount of funds that
leave Ellis County and those that return is widening and the creation of the
county library would allow those taxpayers' funds to stay local.

The $300,000 would be distributed by the local county
library board and could be given to both the Hays and Ellis Public Libraries as
well as the three public school libraries in the county.

Ellis County Commission Michael Berges urged voters to cast
their vote whether they support the measure or not.

“I'm just here to encourage people to vote on it and make
their decision on what direction they want,” Berges. “If they want the current
direction as to how their tax dollars are spent, supplementing other county
libraries, that's fine. If they want to make a decision about where their tax
dollars are spent locally, then vote that direction.”

Voters do not have to declare a party affiliation to vote on
the question, the only requirement is that they live in Victoria or outside the city limits of Hays and Ellis.

Hines told the commission they are continuing to see a
decline in the amount of funding Ellis County is receiving from CKLS and they
believe that trend will continue.

According to Hines, in 2023, Ellis County received $100,000
from the CKLS. He said in 2024 the funding was cut to $90,000 and they have
budgeted only $80,000 next year. 

“We anticipate that to diminish for the next two years,”
Hines said. “So, by 2027, the entire amount of money to the Hays public library
would be $60,000 with an additional about $10,000 to the other libraries in the
county. So, it would be $70,000.”

As members of the CKLS, the Hays Public Library, the Ellis
Public Library and the public school libraries in Ellis, Hays and Victoria all
receive funding from the CKLS annually. The local public school district
libraries receive $500 each.

If the voters approve creation of the Ellis County Library
it would set off a series of actions.

First, it would be up to the Ellis County Commission to
create a library board and appoint five members to that board. 

Those members can only live in the city of Victoria or in
rural Ellis County. No residents from Ellis or Hays would be allowed to serve
on that board.

“The board itself would be its own taxing district; the
county would not get the money,” Berges said. “This library board would also be
its own entity, with the ability to set their own levy up to a certain point.”

It would then be up to that board to decide on which libraries to contract with to provide services to local library patrons. 

If the voters approve the creation of a county library, it
does not mean that there will be a new library built in Ellis County. 

Berges said Ellis County already has physical library
locations. 

“We're not going to build a library; we're going to contract
(with other physical libraries), so those libraries can provide those services,”
Berges said. “We're going to provide, ideally, more funding, because we have
that pot of money that the taxpayers are already paying, but right now it's
going to Central Kansas Library System and then they're divvying that pot of
money back out at a less and less amount.”

He said he believes the board would contract with both Hays
and Ellis Public Libraries to provide services throughout the county similar to
how they operate now but there would be more money to provide to the local
libraries.

Commissioner Nathan Leiker said the county library could be as
much as an office inside of a school library.

The board would also be required to serve as the taxing
entity for the local library tax.

“The tax can't just go away. The county residents still have
to pay a levy for library services and that's where this decision is coming, is
how do they want those library services provided,” Berges said. “As a local
board, potentially, they're the ones establishing that levy.”

The county library board would still have to adhere to the
state’s revenue neutral rate and present and pass a public budget, “just like
other cemetery boards, rural fire, other kinds of taxing and governmental
entities,” Berges said.

Berges, Leiker and County Administrator Darin Meyers all
agreed that there are some questions that cannot be answered until voters weigh
in on the issue.

“That's why it's hard to explain how it works, if there's no
board appointed yet,” Meyers said. “They're the ones that would make those
decisions on what's best for that money being collected and staying in Ellis
County for our local tax purposes (and) for our local residents.”

The county commission and Hines all encouraged residents
that still have questions to reach out to members of the Ellis County
Commission, county administrator or representatives from either the Hays Public
Library or the Ellis Public Library for more information.

Victoria, rural Ellis County voters to decide on county library monies

Step into the fairy tale world of "Once Upon a Mattress," a delightful retelling of The Princess and the Pea by Hays Community Theatre.

"Once Upon a Mattress" is a musical comedy that premiered in an off-Broadway theater in 1959. The play is a humorous adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 1835 tale, "The Princess and the Pea."

Director Paul English said the fun and whimsical story promotes positive themes through its characters and is brought to life by a close-knit cast behind the scenes.

"The whole idea of not living up to the expectations of other people or putting those above your own sense of self is a good healthy theme to promote," English said.

The play is set for Thursday through Saturday at the Beach Schmidt Performing Arts Center at Fort Hays State University. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the show at 7 p.m.

After 460 performances on Broadway, "Once Upon a Mattress" was nominated for Best Musical at the <a href="https://www.tonyawards.com/nominees/year/1960/category/any/show/any/">1960 Tony Awards</a>. It was later adapted for television in 1964, 1972, and 2005.

In the HCT production, Eric Adams portrays Prince Dauntless, whose quest for true love is interrupted by his mother, Queen Aggravain, played by Michele English.

Brooke Leiker stars as Winifred, the faraway swamp princess who remains her authentic self while being tested for marriage to the prince.

"She's very true to her own spirit and I think that's part of the fun is seeing her stand up and say 'I'm just going to be me,'" English said.

Winnifred's sensitivity is tested by the Queen's scheme involving a pea placed beneath twenty mattresses, a significant set piece in the story.

The play also features Nathan Stecklein as Lord Harry, Natalie Loftus as Lady Larken, Everrett Robert as the cursed King Sextimus, Adrian Normandin as Sir Studley and Caleb Johnson as Sir Luce.

Music Director Nathan Leiker is graduating with a degree in music education and has participated in numerous productions, but this marks his debut as a music director.

Choreographer Jess Hamner has also worked on HCT productions and is stepping up for the first time to take on the role of choreographer.

English said this is an opportunity for them to stand on their own two feet as the cast of 26 prepares for the show thanks to their commitment.

"On the production side of this, there have been a lot of people who are very dedicated and have been there through the whole process," he said. "Their energy and excitement made this happen."

"Once Upon a Mattress" features actors ranging from 12-year-olds in middle school to recent high school graduates.

HCT is always seeking new members to join their family and assist with productions. English said that the cast is ahead of schedule and prepared to deliver a "happily ever after" performance.

"We've got this interesting mixture of just over 18 and under and they've kind of gelled together as this group of people that have a lot in common," he said. "I've talked to my crew that every expression and everything you do creates magic and that gets translated to the audience."

English said the three-day run of "Once Upon a Mattress" will offer something for everyone, featuring comedy for kids and themes that adults will appreciate.

"By the end of the show we get a sense of this adventure that a very meek little prince goes through to finally get his princess," English said.

On Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., HCT will hold auditions for "Gran's Guide to Stop an OGRE!" as part of their annual Paula Huser Children's Theatre production. Auditions are open to students entering 1st through 8th grade this fall, with production dates set for September 13 to 15.

Hays Community Theatre presents 'Once Upon a Mattress' Thursday

Cross Manufacturing, Inc. recently celebrated its 75th anniversary with their employees, retirees, and families at their Pratt, Lewis, and Hays locations.

After seeing the labor-saving efficiency of hydraulics while serving in WWII, James H. Cross (Jim) returned home with the vision to harness that same power to do the heavy lifting on the farm. Jim and his brother Charles Cross soon began exploring the idea that hydraulics could utilize the full power potential of a farm tractor to greatly increase farm production. From there, the agricultural tie-rod cylinder pioneered a new era of farming automation.

From that first tie-rod cylinder developed in a Lewis barn, Cross expanded to locations in Pratt and Hays and has extended its product line to include welded cylinders, position sensing cylinders, directional control valves, relief valves, selector valves, adapters, and gear pumps and motors. Cross Manufacturing celebrates 75 years

After three years at this house, we’ve put in gardens and flower beds as well as bird baths to encourage local creatures to share our digs. This summer we’ve had a host of birds nest in our trees where we can watch them parent the next generation.

In addition to filling feeders with black oil sunflower seeds, milo, and corn, our gardens attract various insects. We’ve enjoyed watching the kingbirds swarm about the sunflowers and corn, snagging one tasty bug after another to carry back to a nest full of open beaks. We also have a farm field behind us, and as the sun rises in the east dozens of king birds from the area dash about barely avoiding in-air wrecks as they snag a slow flyer. As in past years, orioles join the other birds, zipping so fast through our vegetable jungle that it looks like ribbons of orange flapping amongst the greenery.

Enough weeks have passed that their babies fledged recently. So far, I’ve found two on the ground that bravely launched themselves from respective nests. They ejected on opposite sides of the yard, so two sets of parents perch overhead warning intruders to leave their offspring alone. While none attacked me the way they do the young squirrel that stops daily for a meal and a drink, they gave me what for when I snapped their offsprings’ photos.

The fledgling in the north yard hadn’t developed flight feathers when he ejected into the wider world. I found him sitting still as could be under our tiny lilac bush, knowing instinctively to remain perfectly still to deter hungry cats or hawks. I told him to pretend no one saw him as I returned to the house to spy from the dining room window. Despite his flightless state, the little guy could hop. In no time, he’d navigated from beneath that little bush, across several feet of bristly buffalo grass and Bermuda, into our garden—a veritable jungle that would hide him well. Mom stood guard on our clothesline. Every now and then, I’d see her do what all good moms do, deliver a meal to nourish her baby.

A couple days later, I noticed another tiny bird hopping about on the south end of the yard. Once again, it was a just-fledged king bird, but fully feathered. Again, parents hovered overhead, threatening kidnappers with all sorts of bird violence. Alfred Hitchcock would have a hey day with these guys and their threats. Again, I escaped to spy undetected. I did see this little chap finding his own insects on the ground so he didn’t need nearly as much mom intervention as that first fledgling. I also noted this one managed to get airborne a few times, though it never made it far before needing a rest. I’m guessing it currently flits around the yard with all the other king birds, and I don’t recognize it.

I know some folks don’t relish bugs and birds in their yards. I’m good with that. Send them to our house. Watching these little families grow and become independent make working outside a joy.

Hays High Athletics Hall of Fame Ticket Sale Reminder

Hays city commissioners will vote on several agenda items Thursday that would advance three new housing and business developments in the city.

Regarding The Grove, a planned mixed-use housing development north of HaysMed on Canterbury Drive, the commission is expected to approve the planned development and set a public hearing date for establishing a reinvestment housing incentive district.&nbsp;

A final plat for the Depot Addition, apartment housing at 10th and Walnut, will be considered.

Commissioners will also vote on the final plat for the 27th and Main Street Addition and rezoning the property from public and institutional to neighborhood shopping district and residential multi-family use.

Astra Bank plans to build a new facility on the property and further develop the two plots for housing and retail business.&nbsp;

A recommended charter ordinance would allow the city to authorize the issuance of general obligation bonds to finance projects in its capital improvements plan by simple adoption of a resolution. Any bonds issued under the charter would be exempt from the debt limit.&nbsp;

The commission will decide whether to execute nuisance abatements for 1700 Marshall Road and 515 E. 11th.&nbsp;

Also on the agenda is the June financial report and the mayor's appointment of Patricia Makings to the Hays Housing Authority Board and the reappointment of Mark Junk to the Hays Recreation Commission Board.

It’s hard to know who people really are when you meet them online. Scammers create fake profiles on social media, as well as game and dating sites. They might send you a friend request, start a conversation and friendship, chatting or texting daily. Surprisingly soon, they might say they’re in love with you. Then, suddenly, they’ll have an expensive emergency — a lost job, failed business, or sister who needs an operation — and appeal to you for&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/avoiding-and-reporting-gift-card-scams">gift cards</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-you-wire-money">money transfers</a>, even&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-cryptocurrency-and-scams">cryptocurrency</a>.

Does a friend you met online need money for an emergency? That’s a scam

Betty Cadoret of Stockton has been a volunteer in the Senior Companion Program for 28 years.

Cadoret, 91, joined the program shortly before her husband died.

"I have lovely companions," she said at a recent banquet celebrating the 50th anniversary of the program.

Cadoret, who still drives, visits with her companions and sometimes takes them to eat lunch, get a pop or go shopping.

"I always told my ladies when I got there, 'I've come to do what you want to do, so whatever you want to do, you tell me,'" she said.

The Senior Companion Program is part of the AmeriCorps Seniors program and is sponsored by Fort Hays State University in northwest Kansas.

In addition to offering friendship to older adults, who are often unable to leave their homes unaided, some companions help with light chores, such as dishes or laundry. They may help fill pill reminders, take a companion to a doctor's appointment or provide respite care for family caregivers.

The program helps seniors stay in their homes and gives the volunteers purpose, Tawnya Rohr, director, said.

"Especially in rural Kansas where families aren't always close and can't always provide those needed services," she said, "they help individuals remain living at home, so they don't have to go to that next level of care. 

"Our volunteers can go in and just provide that little bit of support to help them remain living independently at home."&nbsp;

Volunteers must be 55 years old or older. Incoming-qualifying seniors receive a small stipend for their service, and all volunteers are reimbursed for mileage.

FHSU's Senior Companion Program covers 13 counties, including Phillips, Graham, Rooks, Gove, Trego, Ellis, Russell, Ness, Rush, Barton, Hodgeman, Pawnee and Ford.

Cadoret said she looks forward to "meeting with her ladies."

"What I do is do her sink of dishes, and then we just sit and visit," she said of her current companion. 

"She says, 'I like to visit,' and I say, 'So do I," Cadoret said with a giggle. "We talk about this, that and the other. We have so much fun. It really makes my day because when I go home, I feel like I really have done a day's work."

Beverly Prescott, 84, of Larned, has been a senior companion for 21 years. She became a companion because her husband was a volunteer.

Prescott recalled a fond memory of one her comapnions.

"I had one companion, and I knew her all my life. We did a lot of things together. She had a little red Volkswagen that we would toodle around in. We had a great time. It was lots of fun," Prescott said.&nbsp;

"It gets me out of the house," she said, "and I see the satisfaction when I have done something for them. They are so appreciative."

She strongly urged others to participate in the program.

"Go for it," she said. "It's very inspiring. You get as much out of it as they do."

Adrienne Cargile, 89, of Hays, shares her faith with her companions. They pray together.

"It's so wonderful," Cargile said. "We're both blessed—myself and my senior companion.

"It gives me purpose. When you get to a certain age, you get away from activities and socializing. These people, we have so much in common. We go back to reminiscing about how life used to be."

Juanita Lumpkins of Great Bend was honored at the recent 50th-anniversary banquet for her 20 years of service as a senior companion. She also urged others to volunteer, saying more companions are needed and that she receives great joy from being a volunteer.

At the recent companions' banquet, Kristi Clore discussed how the program has helped her mother. She said her mother became very lonely after her husband died unexpectedly.

"My mom fell in between," Clore said. "'Where do I fit? Who do I help?' Someone like herself who had spent her whole life giving to her family felt as if she didn't fit anywhere."&nbsp;

Clore's mother was matched with Pat Bieker, now a 13-year veteran of the program from Ellis.

Clore said her mother talked about Pat every day.&nbsp;

When Clore's mother moved to Hays, Phyllis Robertson became her companion. Clore said Phyllis brings her mom cheeseburgers and Dr. Pepper Snoballs, which she loves.&nbsp;

"Those are some of the things she does for my mom, not because it's her job, but because she cares," Clore said.

Both women spent hours conversing with her mother, which she said is a great talent.

"My dad used to tell me long before he passed away that the goal in life is to change one person's day," Clore said. "If you change one person's day, you've succeeded as a human. Between Pat and Phyllis, they've done just that over and over and over again."

The program has 55 volunteers across its service area, considerably down from before the pandemic. Rohr said the program has a long list of clients who need volunteer companions.

"Our volunteers can go in and just provide that little bit of support to help them remain living independently at home."&nbsp;Volunteers must be 55 years old or older. Incoming-qualifying seniors receive a small stipend for their service, and all volunteers are reimbursed for mileage.FHSU's Senior Companion Program covers 13 counties, including Phillips, Graham, Rooks, Gove, Trego, Ellis, Russell, Ness, Rush, Barton, Hodgeman, Pawnee and Ford.Cadoret said she looks forward to "meeting with her ladies.""What I do is do her sink of dishes, and then we just sit and visit," she said of her current companion. "She says, 'I like to visit,' and I say, 'So do I," Cadoret said with a giggle. "We talk about this, that and the other. We have so much fun.  </figure>Beverly Prescott, 84, of Larned, has been a senior companion for 21 years. She became a companion because her husband was a volunteer.Prescott recalled a fond memory of one her comapnions."I had one companion, and I knew her all my life. We did a lot of things together. She had a little red Volkswagen that we would toodle around in. We had a great time. It was lots of fun," Prescott said.&nbsp;"It gets me out of the house," she said, "and I see the satisfaction when I have done something for them. They are so appreciative."She strongly urged others to participate in the program."Go for it," she said. "It's very inspiring. You get as much out of it as they do."Adrienne Cargile, 89, of Hays, shares her faith with her companions. They pray together."It's so wonderful," Cargile said. "We're both blessed—myself and my senior companion."It gives me purpose. When you get to a certain age, you get away from activities and socializing. These people, we have so much in common. We go back to reminiscing about how life used to be."Juanita Lumpkins of Great Bend was honored at the recent 50th-anniversary banquet for her 20 years of service as a senior companion. She also urged others to volunteer, saying more companions are needed and that she receives great joy from being a volunteer.At the recent companions' banquet, Kristi Clore discussed how the program has helped her mother. She said her mother became very lonely after her husband died unexpectedly."My mom fell in between," Clore said. "'Where do I fit? Who do I help?' Someone like herself who had spent her whole life giving to her family felt as if she didn't fit anywhere."&nbsp;Clore's mother was matched with Pat Bieker, now a 13-year veteran of the program from Ellis.Clore said her mother talked about Pat every day.&nbsp;When Clore's mother moved to Hays, Phyllis Robertson became her companion. Clore said Phyllis brings her mom cheeseburgers and Dr. Pepper Snoballs, which she loves.&nbsp;"Those are some of the things she does for my mom, not because it's her job, but because she cares," Clore said.Both women spent hours conversing with her mother, which she said is a great talent."My dad used to tell me long before he passed away that the goal in life is to change one person's day," Clore said. "If you change one person's day, you've succeeded as a human. Between Pat and Phyllis, they've done just that over and over and over again."The program has 55 volunteers across its service area, considerably down from before the pandemic. Seniors help seniors as FHSU companion program celebrates 50 years

Our right to vote is one of the fundamental pillars of American democracy. The ballot box is a powerful tool: it amplifies our voices, holds the powerful accountable, and induces change in our society—and so it saddens me when I see my neighbors’ opportunities to vote restricted or denied. Every person legally able to vote should be able to cast a ballot.

That’s why a change is necessary in Hays.

Some tactics to limit our vote are obvious and intentional, while others are subtle or unintended—but the result of silencing someone’s voice is the same. This frequently impacts college students, and in our local example here in Hays, we have seen this in our polling location access

For four years or more, students are not just visitors to our community, but members of it. They live in the community. They pay taxes and contribute to our local economy, and they should have a voice in their community's decisions that affect everyone.

While I was a faculty member at Fort Hays State University, I was part of a group advocating for a polling place nearer to the FHSU campus. Voters had to walk to downtown Hays to reach the nearest polling site instead of the excellent, walkable locations on or close to campus that would have better served not only those students but other residents in the southwest quadrant of Hays. When I lived in Hays, I voted at the VFW and could not have walked there from my house, but many of our students do not have access to transportation, not to mention anyone who may have physical mobility challenges.

I see that since my departure from FHSU in 2017, things have only gotten worse for the students. There are five polling locations within the city limits today. The closest one to campus is more than a mile away and a 28-minute walk, which takes students to Messiah Lutheran Church. When we see all the polling locations: Smoky Hill Country Club, Hays Recreation Center, the VFW, Sternberg Museum and Messiah, there is a noticeable pattern of polling locations clustered towards the north and east of the city, some nearly an hour’s walk from FHSU campus.

When I read that students participating in the American Democracy Project, Grace McCord and Madison Albers, were advocating to move a polling place closer to campus last year, I was thrilled. Madison and Grace have already been recognized by President Tisa Mason for their outstanding leadership and dedication to encouraging access to the ballot for students. Sadly, Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling has responded similarly to her predecessors and appears to be disinterested in righting this significant wrong. Dreiling correctly notes that when the polling place was slightly closer to campus (601 Main Street) turnout was lower than at other precincts in the community. However, at nearly one mile and a 20-minute walk from campus during the warm months of election season in Kansas, it’s inaccurate to say that the location was convenient or close. And as McCord points out in a March letter to Hays Post with Edward Brown and Anniston Weber, the decision to take a low-turnout precinct and make the polling place less accessible is a decision that boggles the mind.

If Dreiling is truly worried about low voter turnout, then there are other things she and her office can do to be a better partner to FHSU and its students. In my new home in Virginia, our city’s Registrar of Elections (the equivalent to Dreiling’s position in Ellis County) is a member of our campus voter team and has actively advocated for enhanced student turnout. 

We face the same issues with students being in multiple precincts across a small community, but our local office coordinates with us on registering students and is working with us to make voting more convenient for everyone. I strongly urge Dreiling to do the same. Our registrar of elections has a city elections board that must approve every decision (including that of polling place locations) whereas the Ellis County Clerk has the autonomy to make that decision themselves. It’s time to make voting more accessible, not less, in Hays America. We have seen a significant increase in student voting over the last three cycles, and much of that can be attributed to working together towards our common goal, not as adversaries.

And as Dreiling herself notes, this isn’t just about FHSU students. Some of those students are in other precincts in town, and plenty of Hays residents who are not FHSU students live in the southwestern quadrant of town. The location of polling places can disenfranchise them as much as the students.

I can only hope that these great young people will have more success than we were able to have when we tried in the mid-2000’s. If we are to really call ourselves a community, then every legal resident deserves to have access to a nearby polling place so they can use their political voice.

For my friends and former colleagues in Hays, I urge you to support the efforts of the FHSU students lobbying to bring a polling place to the Fort Hays campus. Small communities and their colleges need each other, and a polling place at FHSU would be a real sign of the commitment Hays has to being that special type of city that welcomes and values its students – and believes in an accessible and equitable democracy.

Letter: FHSU students should have more accessible voting location

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly announced today that $10 million has been awarded to 12 Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the latest round of Broadband Acceleration Grants. The awards will be paired with an additional $12.7 million in matching funds, resulting in an investment of nearly $22.7 million for high-speed broadband access projects across 14 rural Kansas counties.&nbsp;

“By connecting every region of the state to reliable high-speed internet, we can ensure Kansans have the resources to invest in themselves and our state,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Broadband drives innovation, unlocks potential, and ensures everyone can participate in services essential for economic, educational, and industrial growth.”&nbsp;

Initiated in 2020, the Broadband Acceleration Grant is a 10-year, $85 million program designed to bring essential internet access to Kansas communities. Administered by the Kansas Office of Broadband Development and funded through the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE), this latest round of grants brings the program’s total investment for broadband infrastructure to more than $41.5 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Focusing on economically distressed areas, these awards are designed to meet the need for all Kansans to have access to high-speed internet,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Expanding opportunities for remote work, education, and fuller participation in the digital economy makes broadband infrastructure projects in alignment with our goal to make Kansas the best state to live, work, and raise a family.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Bringing broadband to rural Kansas is critically important for those communities to thrive,”&nbsp;Senate President Ty Masterson said. “These additional grants serve as an on-ramp for all Kansans who need reliable digital access to succeed in whatever career path they choose.”&nbsp;

“Kansas rural communities need reliable broadband access to help support and encourage economic growth, education opportunities, healthcare infrastructure, and innovation in their areas,”&nbsp;House Speaker Rep. Dan Hawkins said. “That's why, as part of the Legislature’s focus on rural revitalization, this initiative was included as part of the IKE Transportation Program. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these Broadband Acceleration Grants will have on these communities and Kansas as a whole.”&nbsp;
