Easter ham is a prominent menu item for many Easter gatherings.

When buying a ham, estimate the size needed according to the number of servings the type of ham should yield:

· 1/4 – 1/3 lb. per serving of boneless ham

· 1/3 – 1/2 lb. of meat per serving of bone-in ham

Whether you are cooking a raw ham or preparing a ready-to eat ham product, follow these steps for a ham that is cooked to perfection.

· Ham that is not ready-to-eat but has the appearance of ready-to-eat products will bear a statement on the label indicating the product needs cooking.

· Ham that requires cooking before consumption or fresh, raw ham must reach an internal temperature of 145°F (with a three-minute rest time). Set the oven no lower than 325°F.

Cooked canned ham and cooked vacuum-packaged ham, both from federally inspected plants, can be eaten right out of the package. All of these along with spiral-cut cooked ham are safe to eat cold or can be warmed to an internal temperature of 145°F, as they are already fully cooked. For cooked hams that have been repackaged in any other location outside the processing plant, heat to an internal temperature of 165°F, measured with a food thermometer, before you serve it.

Store leftover ham in the refrigerator. Use or freeze leftover ham within 3-5 days. Frozen ham is best used within 1-2 months.

A handy chart is available to determine the temperature and cooking time for the type of ham purchased from the USDA Hams and Food Safety website.

Another popular food at the Easter table are eggs. Usually in the form of deviled eggs. And then, of course, there are dyed eggs that are hidden by the Easter bunny and found by little children Easter morning. We always hoped for good weather because the Easter Egg Hunt was way more fun outside than inside!

Easter is a great time to celebrate with family and friends. If you plan to have an Easter egg hunt with real eggs, here’s some food safety tips to keep in mind.

· Only use eggs that have been refrigerated, and discard eggs that are cracked or dirty.

· When cooking, place a single layer of eggs in a saucepan. Add water to at least one inch above the eggs. Cover the pan, bring the water to a boil, and carefully remove the pan from the heat. Let the eggs stand (18 minutes for extra large eggs, 15 minutes for large, 12 minutes for medium). Immediately run cold water over the eggs. When the eggs are cool enough to handle, place them in an uncovered container in the refrigerator where they can air-dry.

· When decorating, be sure to use food-grade dyes. It is safe to use commercial egg dyes, liquid food coloring, and fruit-drink powders. When handling eggs, be careful not to crack them. Otherwise, bacteria could enter the egg through the cracks in the shell.

· Keep hard-cooked Easter eggs chilled on a shelf inside the refrigerator, not in the refrigerator door.

· Hide the eggs in places that are protected from dirt, pets and other potential sources of bacteria.

· Remember the two hour rule, and make sure the “found” eggs are back in the refrigerator or consumed within two hours.

· Remember that hard-boiled eggs are only safe to eat for one week after cooking.

KOERNER: Ham It Up and Celebrate Easter with Egg-stra Care

GOVE COUNTY—One person was injured in a 3-vehicle crash just after 3:30p.m. Monday in Gove County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Freightliner semi was eastbound on Interstate 70 near the Park exit. The driver lost control and began to jackknife into a separate accident scene. 

The semi struck a parked KHP patrol unit providing traffic control for the separate accident scene. 

The semi continued sliding, struck road debris and a 2024 Toyota Highlander driven by Ronald L Busch, 72, Lakewood, Colorado, which was traveling around the road debris. 

The semi continued eastbound and jackknifed until it was stopped by another jackknifed tractor trailer. 

The Toyota continued past the jackknifed tractor trailer after being hit and came to rest on its wheels, facing north just east of the jackknifed tractor trailer. The KHP patrol unit came to rest in the south ditch facing east.

EMS transported a passenger in the Toyota Eric T. Brown, 61, Lakewood, Colorado to the hospital in Quinter.&nbsp; &nbsp;There were no other injuries reported. The occupants of the Toyota were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp;

One hospitalized after 3-vehicle crash on icy I-70

The budget process continues to move forward. This coming Monday, March 25, we will call our first conference committee to get an overview and compare the differences in the House and Senate budget. Hopefully, we will have an opportunity to call additional conferences on Monday.

This upcoming week will be spent on the Chamber floors debating the final bills for this session. All the committees with exception of a couple of exempt committees, which includes Appropriations and Ways and Means, Tax Committee and Federal and State committee will not meet again this year.

The Senate had an informational hearing on Medicaid Expansion last week. The House also had a hearing, and a motion was made to pass the Governors Medicaid Expansion bill out of committee which failed. The meeting was very civil and both sides had opportunities to present their case for and against expansion.

The Senate passed HB 2783 which would prohibit any state agency, city, or county from regulating or restricting the use or sale of motor vehicles based on the energy source used by the vehicle for propulsion or for powering other functions. This bill was necessary to ensure that this troubling trend occurring in other states which restricts the use of fossil fuels does not occur in Kansas.

HB 2562 passed out of the Senate and will create the Protect Vulnerable Adults from Financial Exploitation Act, which would, among other things, require a broker-dealer or investment adviser to promptly report to designated protective agencies instances in which the financial exploitation of an eligible adult may have occurred or has or is being attempted. The bill would also allow a broker-dealer or investment adviser to delay a transaction with or disbursement from an account of an eligible adult, including account beneficiaries, when financial exploitation is expected. In addition, the bill would amend the Kansas Uniform Securities Act (KUSA) to include within provisions governing grounds for discipline a knowing failure to make a report required under the Protect Vulnerable Adults from Financial Exploitation Act.

SB 371 passed the Senate and will expand current provisions to permit the issuance of a silver alert for a missing person who is 18 years of age or older and has an intellectual disability and in other specific circumstances.

SB 493 would amend law concerning ignition interlock devices to require manufacturers of such devices to pay fees to the Kansas Highway Patrol for administration, oversight, and monitoring of the IID program. The bill would also establish the IID Fee Program Fund.

BILLINGER: Senate Update, March 25; Budget process moves forward 

TOPEKA - The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.eitc.irs.gov/?utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=EITC_Outreach">Earned Income Tax Credit</a>&nbsp;is the federal government’s largest refundable tax credit for low to moderate income workers, including those in Kansas. Almost a third of those who qualify for the EITC became eligible for the first time this year due to changes in their marital, parental or financial status and may not realize they’re eligible.

People who earned $63,398 or less in 2023 may be eligible for this valuable tax credit.

Other workers at risk for overlooking the EITC include those:

Kansas taxpayers can check their eligibility and how much they qualify for at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit-eitc">IRS.gov/eitc</a>.

SENATE HIGHLIGHTS - WEEKLY OVERVIEW March 25, 2024

This week the Senate concluded committee meetings; there are a total of 16 standing committees in the Senate. Monday will start a four-day week to complete the regular part of the 2024 legislative session. After the conclusion of the regular session with conference committee action the next week, the legislature is scheduled to take a three-week break before returning for the veto session to wrap up in late April.

SENATE FLOOR ACTION HB 2790 transfers the registration, compliance oversight, and enforcement authority for professional employer organizations from the Commissioner of Insurance to the Secretary of State, effective January 1, 2025. The bill passed 39-0. I voted yes.

HB 2629 would amend provisions in law pertaining to the State Child Death Review Board. The bill would require a coroner to immediately notify the parent or legal guardian that an autopsy of their child had been completed and to provide information on how to obtain the autopsy results. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2498 would authorize issuance of a First City of Kansas distinctive license plate and would require the county of registration to be displayed on most license plates. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2745 would limit the application of the statute providing for reciprocal occupational licensing for military service members and military spouses to provide that such applicants would be exempt from all fees for applications for any such credential assessed by the licensing body. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2481 would designate two portions of K-96 highway and a bridge in Sumner County in honor of deceased service members from Kansas. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2760 would abolish (rename) the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs Office and create the Kansas Office of Veterans Services. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2562 would create the Protect Vulnerable Adults from Financial Exploitation Act, which would, among other things, require a broker-dealer or investment adviser to promptly report to designated protective agencies. The bill passed 38-2. I voted yes.

HB 2176 would create the Arkansas City Area Public Library District Act and the Udall Area Public Library District Act and to adopt resolutions submitting to voters the question of creating a library district and a proposed tax levy amount. The bill passed 36-4. I voted yes.

HB 2532 would amend provisions pertaining to certain financial reporting requirements on group-funded liability and group-funded workers compensation pools. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2557 would amend the definition of the term “peer support counseling session” within the Kansas Rules of Evidence. The bill passed 36-4. I voted yes.

SB 371 would expand current provisions to permit the issuance of a silver alert for a missing person who is 18 years of age or older and has an intellectual disability. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2531 would amend the effective date specified in the Insurance Code for the risk-based capital instructions promulgated by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) for property and casualty companies and for life insurance companies. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

SB 493 would amend law concerning ignition interlock devices to require manufacturers of such devices to pay fees to the Kansas Highway Patrol for administration, oversight, and monitoring of the IID program. The bill passed 28-12. I voted yes.

HB 2530 would amend the definition of “person” in law regarding violations of insurance law by removing references to automobile clubs under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Insurance. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

HB 2525 would direct the Secretary of Health and Environment to deposit several fees into the Water Program Management Fund. The bill passed 39-1. I voted yes.

HB 2561 would amend and enact law supplemental to the State Credit Union Code to authorize domestic credit unions to do business outside the state. The bill passed 40-0. I voted yes.

Several legislative townhalls have been conducted throughout the 36th Kansas Senate District with more scheduled in the upcoming few weeks. The bill would require a coroner to immediately notify the parent or legal guardian that an autopsy of their child had been completed and to provide information on how to obtain the autopsy results. BOWERS: 2024 Senate Scene Week 11; Final regular part of session

The near-month NYMEX futures contract for light sweet crude closed 75 cents higher on Tuesday, to rise above $83 a barrel for the first time since October 30. Then traders retreated, and that contract settled at $80.63 on Friday, posting a weekly loss of $0.41 a barrel. Prices rose a more than a dollar on Monday. WTI was trading over $82 by midday, and London Brent was over $86 per barrel. U.S. crude has traded within a price range of less than three dollars a barrel since the first of March.

Kansas Common crude at C.H.S. in McPherson starts the week at $71 a barrel after dropping 25 cents on Friday.&nbsp; That price is up 75 cents from the first of the month and nine dollars higher than at the first of the year.

According to new research of government data, so-called proved crude oil reserves in Kansas dropped more than 18 percent in the five years through 2021, even as U.S. proved reserves rose more than 25 percent. That's according to Construction Coverage, a web site specializing in construction and insurance. 

According to the report, Kansas boasts the 12th largest reserves in the country at 292 million barrels. Proved reserves are those deposits that are recoverable under current economic and operating conditions. 

The U.S. has over 41 billion barrels in proved reserves. &nbsp;U.S. commercial crude-oil inventories dropped by two million barrels last week to 445 million. That's about three percent below the five year seasonal average. By this time last year, crude-oil stockpiles were nearly 40-million barrels higher at over 481 million. Two years ago, that number was more than 30 million barrels lower at 413 million.

U.S. crude production last week was slightly higher than the week before at 13,141,000 barrels per day. That's an increase of 9,000 barrels per day, and 800,000 barrels per day higher than a year ago. Over the last four weeks, production averaged about 13.2 million barrels per day. That's up nearly eight percent from the four-week average of 12.2 million barrels a day last year at this time.

U.S. crude-oil exports last week totaled 4,881,000 barrels per day, according to a government report. That's an increase of 1.7 million barrels from the week before but down about 50,000 barrels a day from a year ago. Over the last four weeks, exports averaged 4.3 million barrels per day, down half a million barrels from the four-week average a year ago.

E.I.A. said U.S. crude oil imports averaged 6.3 million barrels per day, marking an increase of 787-thousand barrels per day from the previous week. Over the past four weeks, crude oil imports averaged about 6.3 million barrels per day, two percent higher than the same four weeks last year.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes dropped to 624, down one oil rig and four gas rigs from a week ago. The count in Louisiana was down four. New Mexico was down one. 

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is unchanged for the week, up 38% from a month ago, and down 26% from a year ago. Drilling was underway or about to start on Friday on a lease in Barton County and another in Ellis County.

Regulators approved 20 new drilling permits across the state, with all but two of them in eastern Kansas. That's 193 new drilling locations statewide so far this year, compared to 296 by in late March late year. Operators across Kansas completed 30 wells last week, with 14 west of Wichita including one in Ellis County and another in Russell County.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 259 new well-completions so far this year, compared to 471 by this time a year ago.

The Kansas Geological Society met last week to recognize and name four new oil fields in Kansas. Those new fields are located in Butler, Hodgeman, Rawlins and Thomas counties.

Output in the number-three crude producing state was down more than 13% in January, due largely to a winter weather event that shut in nearly half of the state's production. The Department of Mineral Resources last week reported final production totals for January dropped by more than 172-thousand barrels per day, to just over 1.1 million barrels per day. Natural Gas production was down 15%, and the gas-capture rate at oil wells dropped from 95 to 93%.

PLAINVILLE — Paradise Flats Theatre Collective is extending its stage and welcoming more students to explore their talents as creators, artists and performers.

Established in Plainville, Paradise Flats brings musical theatre to northwest Kansas through its summer Kids Theatre Camp and backstage productions.

Originally for kindergarten through sixth-grade students, music teacher Adam Flax said the summer program will now include students of higher grade levels.

"We're going to have a component for junior and high schoolers that's going to be a more traditional musical program," Flax said.

The summer camp will split the program into the two-week Elementary Kids Theater Camp for younger students and the roughly month-long Mainstage Production for older students.

The Kansas Creative Arts and Industries Commission grant allows for the once-exclusive experience to allow for a greater range of students in the area.

Thanks to the grant from the Kansas Creative Arts and Industries Commission, the once-exclusive experience also allows for a larger range of students in the area.

"With the grant, we're able to open the camp to other communities outside Plainville," Flax said.

The Kids Theater Camp starts on June 3 with a final show on June 14.&nbsp;The Mainstage Production is from May 28 until its final show on June 28 and 29.

Students will also have the chance to work behind the curtain, utilizing their design, outreach and technical skills.

Apprenticeship opportunities include refining skills in the following areas::

"We have two different lanes for students," Flax said. "These are jobs you need to get production off the ground, and it shows that there are opportunities in the arts that aren't singing, dancing and acting."

"This will be our first year, and we're hoping to have something that Plainville and other communities can see as opportunities for their kids," he said.

Plainville USD 270 expands theater program for regional K-12 students

The Wings of Life World Run is a run/walk held in numerous places around the world on May 5, with each location starting at the same time — 11 a.m. and coordinated universal time (UTC).&nbsp;

In Hays, that means a 6 a.m. start for the Wings for Life World Run at the Bickle/Schmidt Sports Complex.&nbsp;

All entry fees go to <a href="https://www.wingsforlife.com/us/spinal-cord-injury">spinal cord research</a>, said Darren Unrein, operations director at A&amp;A Coors, Hays. The cost to enter is $28 per person.&nbsp;

A&amp;A Coors is the area distributor of Red Bull energy drinks, which is the sponsor of the international event.&nbsp;

"Professional athletes, fun runners, beginners, are all in it together against the virtual catcher car," Unrein said.&nbsp;

The catcher car is on the downloadable registration app available on the&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com/en/locations">Wings for Life World Run website</a>, or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556730620944">Facebook page</a>. The virtual car begins moving 30 minutes after the start of the race and "once it overtakes you, you're done," he said. "There's no finish line."

"You walk or run, set your own distance and pace," Unrein said. "You can set anywhere from one mile up to 50 miles, if you're that ambitious. 

"You're not racing against other people. You're racing against the catcher car and your own goal. That's what makes this race different than most."

The Wings for Life World Run is now the largest running event in the world, according to information on its website. People in 195 countries have participated in the past decade, raising the equivalent of more than $47 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The first 200 runners/walkers/wheelers to sign up will get a Red Bull lanyard. Prizes of a Red Bull backpack and a metal water bottle will be awarded to the top 10 distance runners. A special prize will be given for first place.

A light post-race breakfast will be served with water and Red Bull available to all participants and supporters.

The nonprofit Wings for Life World Run, now in its 10th year, has funded almost 300 spinal cord injury research projects in 20 countries.&nbsp;

&nbsp;According to the World Health Organization, between 250,000 and 500,000 people suffer a traumatic spinal cord injury every year. 

In the United States, more than 50% of those injuries are the result of traffic accidents, while 24% of spinal cord injuries are from falls.&nbsp;

"They become paralyzed with no feeling in their legs, maybe no feeling in their arms or hands either," Unrein said.

"As a charity foundation, Wings for Life supports cutting edge research worldwide. The big goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injury," he said.

In the United States, more than 50% of those injuries are the result of traffic accidents, while 24% of spinal cord injuries are from falls.&nbsp;"They become paralyzed with no feeling in their legs, maybe no feeling in their arms or hands either," Unrein said."As a charity foundation, Wings for Life supports cutting edge research worldwide. The big goal is to find a cure for spinal cord injury," he said.

Tuesday, March 19, I lead the debate on the House floor for the budget that is in House Substitute for House Bill 2273. The debate on the floor lasted nearly three hours after numerous amendments were offered.

The budget bill from the House is considerably different than the budget that was submitted by the governor. For fiscal year 2024, we reduced spending from the governor’s budget by approximately $450 million, all funds, and in fiscal year 2025, we reduced spending by $330 million from the governor’s recommendation with state general fund dollars, and an all funds decrease by $939 million.

The highlights of the budget bill are that in 2024, we will expedite the paying off of three bonds totaling $47.7 million; address the security breach that occurred last fall with the judicial branch; allocates to the University of Kansas and Wichita State University collaboration for a health science center $30 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) monies.

The highlights for fiscal year 2025 are increases to the Medicaid reimbursement rates for hospitals and physicians. The bill also stipulates that we will reduce the waiting list for the intellectually developmental disability waiver by 500 individuals and the same number for the physical disability waiver. We also included $23.4 million for Medicaid payments for our nursing care facilities.

Included in the budget are all the projects that we crafted to address economic development across the state of Kansas in fiscal year 2025. This includes $10 million for the World Cup event in Kansas City, and if the legislature approves of how the funds were utilized, another $18 million may be dispersed in 2026. An allocation of $16.9 million to northwest Kansas for retail and housing, $20 million for the Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson, $6 million to address transportation needs when the Hilmar Plant is operational, and $4 million for three small communities in southwest Kansas that are losing their natural gas sources. All of these projects are funded with the remaining ARPA money or through a special revenue fund. None of these projects are funded with state general fund dollars.

The budget bill passed the House Floor, 91-32, now we begin conference committee with the Senate.

Since the budget was debated on the House Floor, the House Appropriations Committee only met on Wednesday and Thursday. During these meetings, we held informational hearings. Tuesday, we heard from the Kansas Lottery and they provided an update regarding the lottery, new lottery vending machines, casinos, and sports betting.&nbsp;

The Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission gave us a briefing on the new Historical Horse Racing Machines facility that is being built in Park City.

Wednesday, we heard about the aviation initiatives from the Kansas Department of Transportation and the projects that were just announced. We also heard about the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul initiative in Wichita, Salina, and Topeka.

Tuesday, the House Federal and State Affairs committee had a hearing on House Bill 2653, a bill that provides for child support orders for unborn children from the date of conception. Wednesday, the committee had a hearing on Senate Bill 347, which abolishes the current Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission and creates a new commission with the requirement that the new commission is confirmed by the Senate.

The House Taxation Committee had a hearing on House Bill 2844 Wednesday regarding a new two-rate tax plan. This plan would also incorporate modifications to the personal standard deduction, increasing the property tax exemption and the amount taxed for social security, and the elimination of the Local Ad Valorem Tax Reduction Fund.

Also on Wednesday, March 20, the House Health and Human Services Committee, the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, and the Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on Medicaid expansion. This hearing has been requested by many.

Thursday, the Higher Education Committee heard House Bill 2464, which increases the dollar amount of state scholarships for students attending a postsecondary educational institution with financial needs.

WAYMASTER: From the Dome to Home, March 22; budget bill debated in the House

From noon to 3 p.m. on April 8, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center is offering the community an opportunity to witness a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party. While our location may not experience totality, viewers will still be treated to a rare and spectacular sight as the moon obscures 82.5 percent of the sun.

The event is not just about the eclipse. It's a fun-filled and educational afternoon for all ages. Attendees can look forward to engaging in games, science experiments, snacks, crafts, and safe viewing opportunities. We encourage guests to bring lawn chairs and lunches to make the most of this exciting day.

Safety is paramount, and attendees will be reminded not to stare directly at the sun to avoid damage to their retinas. Thanks to the generosity of the Great Bend Noon Lions Club, 300 eclipse glasses will be available for distribution to participants on the day of the event.

Activities will include various safe viewing methods, learning sessions about moon phases, accompanied by sweet treats, discussion about animal behavior during an eclipse, and crafting sessions to make UV bead bookmarks and eclipse necklaces as keepsakes.

Sponsors and students from the Barton Community College STEM Club will assist in leading activities.

Additionally, lawn games will be set up around the picnic shelter, and eclipse-related videos will be screened in the auditorium.

Ellis County in Winter Weather Advisory Monday until 8 p.m.

NORTON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Sunday in Norton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Equinox driven by Alan R.&nbsp;Schukman, 69, Long Island was eastbound on U.S. 36 one mile east of the U.S. 283 junction in Norton.

&nbsp;The driver lost control of the vehicle when it hydroplaned. The SUV entered the north ditch and struck a culvert.

EMS transported Schukman to the hospital in Phillipsburg. The KHP did not have seat belt usage information.

Erin Gibson of Hays has been an in-home child care provider for 22 years — a job she only anticipated working for a few years while her children were small.&nbsp;

Today children she cared for as toddlers are grown and married.

Parents who have children in Gibson's care are pleased she didn't leave the profession.

Mother Ashley Sheely nominated Gibson, and she was selected as the March Child Care Champion.

"Miss Erin takes care of our kids as if they were her own!" Sheely said. "My kids have been with Erin for 3.5 years now, and she has become a part of our family. The support she gives her families certainly surpasses the expectations!"

Gibson said she initially became a child care provider because she wanted to stay home with her oldest two children. She taught preschool for a few years, but when her third child came along, she returned to in-home child care.

She taught preschool for a few years, but when her third child came along, she returned to in-home child care.Gibson said providing care in her own home also gave her the flexibility to spend more time with her husband, who was a police department patrol officer who worked varied hours."I'm in it until retirement now," Gibson, 45, said.Gibson said the children and their families became an extended part of her family. She spends up to nine hours a day with the children in her care.Gibson operates on a play-based model."Play covers everything," Gibson said. "There's social. There's emotional, education. Everything that they need to learn at this point in time we can get processed through play. "The day the Hays Post visited, the children watched a video on dinosaurs and then played with dinosaur figurines.Playing with blocks or at the toy workbench or kitchen helps the children model what they see at home, encourages imagination, and helps them develop fine and gross motor skills."When something clicks with them, that's my favorite part," she said.Group play also helps children build social and emotional skills."We talk about how you can have big emotions, but it's how you respond to your emotions that we try to work on," she said.Instead of giving the kids access to a large selection of toys from a giant toy box, she separates the toys into categories to help extend the kids' attention spans.When she gets out Mr. Potato Head, all the children play Mr. Potato Head until they agree they're ready to move on to something else.Child care has been a family affair for Gibson. Her mother was also a child care provider for about 30 years. She said she was lucky to be gifted many of her mother's toys.She said the children like playing with some of the older toys and seem to get as much delight out of them as they would something with a screen, or that lights up.She also said she thought the toys promote children's use of their imaginations. The kids were playing outside recently. One of the kids had recently watched "Night at the Museum," so the children were pretending to freeze during the "day" and then become animated museum figures at "night."Some of Gibson's favorite times are holiday parties with the kids. During Christmas, Santa visits and brings pizza. The kids make mummy dogs for Halloween — hot dogs wrapped in biscuits. Green beans are witch fingers, and marshmallows are ghost poop."It's so funny to watch the kids," she said. "They say 'Oooo!' They know what it is because we eat it all of the time, but if you call it something different ..."In-home child care has its challenges. Providers must follow numerous regulations, take continuing education hours annually and are subject to surprise inspections.Yet Gibson encourages others interested in entering the profession to hang in there despite the challenges."I tell people what other job could I have that my co-worker comes to work in rainboots, shorts and a superhero cape," she said.&nbsp;She said the hugs and I love yous make up for all she has to do to prepare for the state."The rewards outweigh anything that could bring you down," she said.She said she loves watching the kids grow up, but eventually, she has to let them go."They are like family," she said.
