HaysMed welcomes 2 new surgeons to DeBakey Heart Institute

The Ellis County Joint Planning Commission gave preliminary approval for the Whispering Gales Addition in rural Ellis County during a public hearing Wednesday.

The housing addition will be north of Interstate 70 at the Yocemento interchange.

Professional surveyor James Meis presented early plans for a 20-lot subdivision north of Interstate 70. Eighteen lots are intended for single-family residential homes.

The area will exclude mobile homes, storage buildings made from shipping containers and will allow a limited number of pets.

The homeowners will oversee the design of the lots through an architectural control committee, which will discuss any proposed changes.

"If somebody wants to make changes to their lot structures, they have to get it approved by everybody, so everyone is on the same page," Meis said.

Meis said one lot will serve as an area for stormwater retention and walking trails, while another, the largest lot, will remain flexible for potential future commercial development.

"For instance, maybe a gas station or something of that nature, but it's 10 acres, so you can't do a lot with that," he said.

Each subdivision, spanning three blocks and accessible through two entry points, ranges from 4.24 to 10.04 acres.

With no gas service in the area, residents will need to use propane tanks. Western Electric Cooperative will provide electrical services.

Karst Water Well Drilling &amp; Service has drilled three water wells, each reaching a depth of 40 feet. Each lot will have its own septic tank system.

"Rural water is not an option," Meis said. "Everything is going to be a private water well."

New private roads will be constructed to county standards. A homeowners association will collect fees from landowners to fund road maintenance, Meis said.

Residents, landowners, guests, emergency services and government employees will have access to the private roads.

"There's not a lot of lots like this in Ellis County with its size and location," Meis said.

The planning commission approved the motion for the preliminary plat of Whispering Gales Addition. The early plans will be presented to the Ellis County Commission on Tuesday for consideration.

If accepted, a final plat application will be submitted, which the planning committee will meet to discuss. Meis said a final plat has already been prepared in anticipation of the preliminary approval.

The next Ellis County Joint Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for July 24.

There are now more than 4,000 treatment courts in the United States, including nineteen in the state of Kansas with plans for several more in the coming months and years. Treatment courts are a sentencing alternative that provide lifesaving treatment to justice involved individuals with substance use and mental health disorders.

According to All Rise, treatment courts are the single most successful intervention in our nation’s history for leading people with substance use and mental health disorders out of the justice system and into lives of recovery, stability, and health. Treatment courts have transformed the way the justice system responds to individuals with substance use and mental health disorders by combining accountability with evidence-based treatment. By delivering individualized, evidence-based treatment, supervision, drug testing, and social services, treatment courts save lives and reduce crime. According to All Rise, treatment courts annually refer more than 150,000 people to lifesaving treatment and recovery support services. Not only is the treatment court approach effective and humane, but it also saves considerable money for taxpayers. According to All Rise, research shows that treatment courts produce benefits of $6,208 per participant and return up to $27 for every $1 invested. According to the 2020 annual report from the Kansas Department of Corrections, it costs an average of $30,100 a year to keep someone in prison. (allrise.org; kscourts.org) 

The Ellis County Recovery Court (formerly Ellis County Drug Court) began in 2018 and has had fifty-eight participants to date successfully complete our program. Our court is one of thousands that demonstrate why treatment courts are so critical in the effort to address addiction and related crime. The scientific research agrees: Numerous studies have found that treatment courts reduce crime and drug use and save money. 

Research shows treatment courts also improve education, employment, housing, financial stability, and family reunification, which reduces foster care placements. 

Treatment courts represent a compassionate approach to the ravages of addiction. Ellis County is privileged to be able to reap the economic and societal benefits of its Recovery Court. The Recovery Court team thanks the community for its continued support of our efforts to make a difference in Ellis County and the 23rd Judicial District.

“On the Road to Thriving Rural Communities,” the 49th&nbsp;Annual National Institute on Social Work &amp; Human Services in Rural Areas will be offered both on campus and through Zoom.

The conference will feature a legislative panel, and keynote speakers on the topics of human trafficking, substance abuse, mental health, and more.

“This conference is a great way to learn more about diversity in rural areas in America, as well as providing human service specialists access to professional development resources through presentations,” said Leea Smarsh, 2024 Rural Conference Intern.

FHSU to host National Institute on Social Work & Human Services in Rural Areas

 Hayden Albright, a standout sprinter on the Fort Hays State University men’s track and field team, recently crossed the commencement stage, donning his cap and gown. Albright earned his bachelor's degree in&nbsp;Information Networking and Telecommunications, with a concentration in&nbsp;Cybersecurity. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in Albright’s academic journey.

While many of his peers are venturing into the workforce, Albright has chosen a different path. He will return to FHSU after graduation to pursue a&nbsp;Masters of Professional Studies in Information Assurance Management while also completing his final year of eligibility for both the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Hailing from Kingman, Albright’s college experience has included many challenges and triumphs. Despite the demands of his rigorous academic program, he maintained an impressive&nbsp;GPA of 3.78.

Beyond the classroom, Albright has achieved much success on the FHSU track team. His accolades include being a&nbsp;4-time All-American, earning honors in the indoor 400 meters in 2023, as well as being a member of the indoor distance medley relay team in 2024 and the outdoor 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams in 2021. Albright is also a 2-time MIAA Champion and a&nbsp;7-time All-MIAA&nbsp;athlete.

“Hayden’s story is uniquely inspirational, one I’ll share with high school and college athletes in the future,” said Kelly Meyer, FHSU online admissions advisor and assistant track and field sprints coach. “Hayden joined our team as a walk-on, but consistently gave his best every day. Because of his hard work and dedication, he continued to develop.”

“Of course, now, he's a 4x All-American and a key leader on our team,” Meyer said. “I'm so proud of the student, athlete, and person he has become.” &nbsp;

Albright credits much of his growth and success as an athlete to the FHSU athletics department and the great coaches he has worked with.

“My sprints coach, Kelly Meyer, has been a huge part of my life in Hays,” Albright said. “She was like having a second mom here at FHSU.”

Albright’s academic achievements include the&nbsp;CSC Academic All-District&nbsp;distinction in 2023. Additionally, he received the&nbsp;USTFCCCA All-Academic Award&nbsp;three times, the&nbsp;MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award&nbsp;five times, was named to the&nbsp;MIAA Academic Honor Roll&nbsp;on five occasions, and received the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award twice. His commitment to both athletics and academics exemplifies the well-rounded student-athlete.

Albright also credits his professors and instructors in the Informatics Department as key to his academic success.

“Kevin Shaffer (Associate Professor and Interim Chair of Informatics) was always willing to help; he has helped me out a lot,” Albright said. “He has helped me both in class and with choosing classes to make sure I got everything I needed.”

As Albright embarks on his post-graduation journey, he recognizes that hard work is the key to success.

“Sometimes,&nbsp;the only way to be successful was to put my head down, work hard, and make sacrifices,” Albright said. “This meant not hanging out with friends sometimes so that I could achieve my desired grade or put more work into track. However, I still had plenty of chances to have fun with friends and enjoy college.”

Hayden Albright’s story serves as an inspiration to all aspiring graduates. To paraphrase his own beliefs, dedication and perseverance pave the way to achievement, whether on the track or in the classroom.&nbsp;

FHSU men’s track and field standout sprinter graduates with honors

Following the Civil War, many officers born and raised in the East continued serving their country on the Kansas frontier. That legion included Captain Albert Barnitz, born in Pennsylvania in 1835 and reared in Ohio. He studied first at Kenyon College and later continued his education at Cleveland Law College. While there, he published a book of poetry titled Mystic Delvings. This hinted at writing tendencies modern readers continue to enjoy.

Barnitz’s path to Kansas began after the death of his first wife who died in childbirth in 1860. Still grieving, he joined the 13th Ohio Infantry as a three-month volunteer in 1861. Following that service, he enlisted in the 2nd Ohio Cavalry as a sergeant. By 1863, Barnitz achieved senior captain rank.

Following his recovery from severe injuries, Barnitz returned to serve under the command of George A. Custer in the Shenandoah Valley and fought his last battle at Appomattox. He returned briefly to civilian life, but received a captain’s commission in the U.S. Army in 1866. The following year he married his second wife Jennie Platt, and they began their Great Plains adventure that included the two writing and saving a series of letters and journals that reflect the military and social life of the period.

During his military career, Barnitz served at several frontier forts, including Leavenworth, Riley, and Harker. His wife Jennie joined him at several of these postings. When they weren’t together, they wrote one another regularly. Albert also kept a journal of his experiences over decades. Fortunately for posterity, they saved these documents.

Through these letters and journals, readers can time travel to the years 1866 – 1869 on the Plains. Robert Utley collected and edited them into a book titled Life in Custer’s 7th Cavalry. Barnitz and Jennie write about military experiences, life on the prairie, Hancock’s failed expedition, a battle with Indians at Fort Wallace, Camp Alfred Gibbs (just west of Ellis, Kansas), and Jennie surviving a flash flood at the first site of Fort Hays.

Piquing the interest of history buffs, Albert and Jennie’s letters reveal personal information about the Custers, Colonel Alfred Gibbs, Major Joel Elliott, Miles Keogh, and other famous colleagues. Through this couple’s running commentary, readers see historical personages as real people complete with strengths and frailties. In addition, they see Barnitz’s attitudes about these individuals evolve, showing how his and Jennie’s opinions changed continually. This couple’s correspondence would’ve enthralled historian Robert Utley as he studied their decades of communication.

Their letters reveal Albert and Jennie’s love story, his desire to be a good officer, and his disgust with fellow officers who drank too much or abused their troops. Interested in nature, he provides excellent accounts of regional wildlife, plants, and weather as well.

Because Barnitz had the observational and writing skills of a poet, his records of military life during one of the frontier’s most active periods provide a time machine-like glimpse into a vanished era. Life in Custer’s Cavalry offers more than communication between a man and woman. It’s an invitation to visit their world, one we occupy today.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the Burkholder family of Hays.

JB has some abdominal pain and some bleeding. He is hoping to be released from Wesley Medical in Wichita soon, the GoFundMe page said,

Kyle, has a T12 Spine fracture and also had an aortic tear, the page said. Both of Kyle's injuries will require surgery for repair. He has been moved to St. Loius. 

"Though we are thankful these injuries are not life-threatening, we would like to relieve the Burkholder family of some of the burden that will be involved with the medical expenses, travel, food, hotels, etc.," the page said.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol report, Burholder's car moved to the left lane to avoid traffic backed up due to an oversized load, which was stopped. Burkholder's car rear-ended a 2015 GMC Terrain.

The driver and a passenger in the GMC were also transported to a hospital in Wichita.

The GoFundMe was created by&nbsp;Dustin Pfeifer. It had raised $11,275 as of this post.

GoFundMe set up for Hays boy injured in weekend crash

The Ellis County Republican Party believes in the right to bear arms, and they recently decided to celebrate it with our second annual trap competition. Held on May 18 at the Hays City Sportsmen’s Club, they opened the gates at 8:30 a.m. and started shooting half an hour after that.

The first-place prize for adults was a $400 gift certificate at American Shooters, and it was won by Jarrett Pfannenstiel. Chris Younger took second place along with a $250 gift certificate at Joe Bob Outfitters, while Blake Stieben claimed the number three spot with a $100 gift certificate at the Little G Gun Shop in Plainville.

The event also had a great showing among competitors aged 12 to 17, with first-place winner Gunner Weigel scoring a $200 gift certificate at Joe Bob Outfitters. Jaxon Stoffel and Carter Kendall were our second and third-place winners. They collected prizes from Diamond R Jewelry valued at $150 and $75, respectively.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ellis County GOP recognizes trap competition winners

The Ellis County Commission has pledged to support the Grove
Community Center in Hays to the tune of $241,000, with the understanding that their
contribution is dependent on the county’s continuing financial stability.

The Grove is a housing development with a proposed community center north of Hays
Medical Center that will house a child care facility with the ability to care
for as many as 77 children, the home of the new local senior center and several community rooms
that could be used for different community gatherings.

The funding would only go to the community center and not to the housing development that is being built around it.

Doug Williams, Grow Hays executive director, told the Ellis County
Commission they have raised $5.75 million of the $6 million for the community center. He came before the commission to request the remaining $241,605 to
fund the project on April 9.

After all three county commissioners voiced their support
during the April 9 meeting, the commission continued discussions on
the funding at their May 14 meeting.

The three commissioners again voiced their support for the
facility, and Commissioner Michael Berges said he wanted to provide the funding from the 2024 budget if the county could. 

"We have room in this year's budget to be able to do it,"
Berges said. "We did what we told taxpayers last year by lowering the mill. We
got a balanced budget, and we can get it in there and still have some budget stabilization."


Berges said, “I want to get this funded. I think it makes
more sense to get it funded this year and then have it off our plate to move
on to 2025.”

Ellis County Administrator Darin Myers suggested the
commission use the funds from the 2024 budget to pay Grow Hays. He said with the year almost half over, it appears the county has the funds to make
such a move.

“Looking at where we've been at for the last five years, I
would say it's highly likely that we would have the budget authority remaining
in the general fund to make that allocation to Grow Hays if the commission
would request to do so,” Myers said. 

Myers said the county commissioners set aside additional funds to implement a wage and benefit study. The county started the year with more money in the budget stabilization fund than in normal years, so it has about $790,000 in the fund.

"Of those five prior years, that's the second most we've had
left in that (fund)," Myers said. "We never usually spend out of it because it's
usually there as a buffer in case the overall general budget goes over."

Myers suggested that the commission if they choose to make the funding commitment, wait until August or later this year to assess the county's financial situation and then determine whether to use funding from the 2024 or
2025 budget.

Williams told the commission the most important thing was they committed to funding the project.

“When it's paid is not as important as that it's going to be
paid, that there is a commitment,” Williams said. “If it's a matter of getting
to the end of the year and seeing if budgets are where they are ... we certainly have that level of flexibility.”

He told the commissioners if they commit to the funding, that
will trigger the $1 million commitment from the city of Hays and $750,000 from
the Robert E. and Patricia Schmidt Foundation. According to Williams, both entities' funding is contingent
upon Grow Hays receiving the remaining $4.25 million.

In a 3-0 vote, the commission approved a motion that funds
the Grove Community Center Project $241,605 for the 2024 budget, pending
continued positive budget trends.

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Governor Laura Kelly today announced that $6.65 million in federal funds will go to 10 rural projects to increase the safety and efficiency of local roadways. The effort is part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s High Risk Rural Roads (HRRR) Program.

“Our rural roads are important to the local and state economy,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “Programs like this enable commerce to flow smoothly and improve safety for Kansas families as they travel our state.”

The HRRR program is federally funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program and is designed to improve rural road safety. An additional $2.37 million in local funds will be used for the selected projects. This year’s 10 HRRR projects were selected from 46 applications seeking $40.5 million in federal funds.

“Data shows more than 60% of fatal and serious injury crashes occur on county-owned roads and highways,”&nbsp;said Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed.&nbsp;“These funds assist our rural partners to increase roadway safety by using low-cost and proven countermeasures.”

Projects in this program fall into one of two categories: Systemic (encompassing a local roadway network) or Site Specific.

The county, category, amount awarded, county match, and brief description for the selected projects are:

Intersection improvements at S 200th Street and E 520th Avenue.

Widen roadway and install 3-inch shoulders with SafetyEdgeTM, eliminate fixed obstacles, extend culverts, increase radius returns at two side roads, and install new pavement markings on 1400 Avenue between Jeep Road and Key Road.

Upgrade signing on all minor collectors in the county.

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin work on a pair of bridge repair projects along eastbound I-70 in Trego County starting Monday, June 3.

Project work will include milling, patching and resurfacing the bridge decks on the structures located approximately 5 miles east of WaKeeney and 4.3 miles east of Ogallah. Lane closures will be in effect through the work zones, with speeds reduced to 60 mph. KDOT reminds motorists to slow down and stay alert for construction equipment and crews when traveling through the work zones.

Project work is expected to be complete in early October, conditions permitting.

GREAT BEND — The Kansas Wetlands Education Center offers a monthly series to get kids outside exploring and off their devices. KWEC’s WILD programs are free of charge and don’t require registration.

On June 14 from 10-11 a.m., kids can discover what types of mammals live on the KWEC nature trail. Participants will check Sherman traps, a box-style trap to catch live small mammals. They will identify, collect data, and then release any mammals captured. In addition, participants will study some of the tracks in the area and look for any other clues mammals may have left along the trail.

On July 12 - 10-11 a.m., if it flies, crawls, jumps, or swims, kids will want to catch it during our July WILD activity. After crafting a bug catcher, armed with nets, participants will head out to the KWEC nature trail in search of insects. They will see what types of insects they catch and then identify them. After walking the trail, participants will examine and hold the KWEC classroom Vietnamese Walking Sticks, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, and Giant Millipedes.

Join KWEC on select Fridays from 1-4 p.m. this summer for a free, come-and-go nature craft. Before completing the craft, attendees will participate in a quick learning activity about the craft theme. The activities are geared toward kids 5-12, but all ages are welcome.

June 14 - Seed Kaleidoscope - craft and decorate a mesmerizing kaleidoscope using seeds, beads, and other nature items for a unique display of images. June 21 - Pollinator Puddler - Celebrate Pollinator Week by creating a small dish with jewels and rocks to create a water source for bees and butterflies. July 5 - Snake Skin Suncatcher - using sheds from the KWEC snakes, create a unique suncatcher to place in the window. July 12 - Hammered Flower Banner - after selecting colorful blooms from the KWEC pollinator garden and marsh area, pound the colors onto a banner to take home!

For those who want a more immersive nature experience, KWEC is offering&nbsp;Nature Discovery Camps. Camps feature outdoor exploration, including animal and plant investigations through fun activities, nature-related crafts, and games.

We all know that relationships are an important part of life, but they are more impactful than we give them credit for. Dependable family members, stress-relieving friendships, and supportive coworkers bring color to life. These connections even support healthy behaviors, enhance mental health, and bolster brain function.

Who would have thought that relationships could have such a large stake in physical health? When we think about ways to improve well-being, many of us envision a leafy green salad, not a game of cards. However, the people we surround ourselves with (or don’t) have a larger role than we imagine.

First, quality connections give us purpose. If you’ve heard of the Blue Zones, you likely know the term “ikigai” that Okinawan centurions use to describe their purpose in life. In this culture, people have a distinct reason for waking up each morning, and for many, ikigai revolves around loved ones. Whether it is providing for children, caring for parents, or spending time with friends, what a person can give, adds meaning to life. This sense of purpose provides a deep understanding of the big picture which fuels optimism and resilience that strengthens mental health. People with a strong ikigai, are also more likely to prioritize healthy behaviors so they can achieve their ultimate purpose.

Relationships not only give meaning to life, they can provide a mental workout. Engaging in social activities stimulate various regions of the brain by strengthening neural circuits, producing hormones, and increasing connectivity. Social butterflies are more likely to have good cognition and memory while isolated people have a 50% increased risk of developing dementia. Just like physical exercise is good for the body, socialization is a workout for the brain.

A sense of community can give meaning to life, encourage healthy behaviors, and protect the brain. It can also support the immune system and strengthen the heart! So, how can you enrich your relationships?

1. Be curious. Take an interest in others and ask lots of questions. This opens up a door for conversation and lets others know you care about them. When you are curious, you may realize how much you have in common with others.

2. Practice generosity. We can’t control how people engage with us, but practicing the golden rule can help others reciprocate generosity in time and kindness.

3. Listen to understand. Sometimes we engage in conversation only to hear ourselves talk. Instead of trying to prove a point, slowing down and listening intently to what another has to say provides an atmosphere for connection. It also is a great way to learn through others' experiences.

4. Check in often. Creating lasting relationships takes time and effort. The more you engage with a person, the stronger your bond can grow. Be sure to schedule regular gatherings and phone calls to strengthen your social circle.

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a Nitrate Advisory for the City of Lucas public water supply system located in Russell County. The advisory is being issued because of system upgrades that may take several weeks.&nbsp;

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:&nbsp;

The advisory took effect on&nbsp;May 28,&nbsp;2024&nbsp;and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of&nbsp;nitrate&nbsp;contamination&nbsp;in excess of&nbsp;the MCL&nbsp;are resolved.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The&nbsp;City&nbsp;will provide free of charge an alternate source of drinking water for all infants less than six months of age, pregnant women, and other at-risk customers as&nbsp;identified&nbsp;by a health care provider. Alternate water will be available for customer pick-up at the Home Oil and Service Convenience Store, 5499 Hwy 18. Residents must present a coupon from the City of Lucas&nbsp;in order to&nbsp;receive the bottled water. Coupons are available at the Lucas Civic Center, 201 S. Main.&nbsp;Regardless of whether the public&nbsp;water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced an Advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Nitrate advisory issued for the city of Lucas, Russell County

After settling for a second-place finish Friday night in Colby, Tathan Burkhart and his crew made the necessary changes to help #2fiddy find victory lane at his hometown track of RPM Speedway.

Tathan and his competitors all had to keep up with changing track conditions as the night started with a dry, and slick racetrack, that quickly turned to a wet and tacky surface as Mother Nature stepped in twice with rain showers that delayed the night.

Eighty-four IMCA race teams checked into the legendary RPM Speedway for the Memorial Day Weekend Special, and the race fans at the track and those at home watching on IMCA.TV were treated to quite the show despite the rain.

Visiting victory lane along with Tathan Burkhart in the stock car, were Kyle Rohleder the Wakeeney native in the modified class, Connor Schwien the Russell native in the sport compact, Cody Williams the Minneapolis native in the hobby stock, and Luke Stallbaumer, the Tecumseh native in the sport mod.

The sport compacts started the night off with two six-lap heat races with brothers Connor and Jake Schwien picking up wins. After a tornado hit the Schwien's shop last weekend, it was an emotional scene seeing the brothers do well at the track Saturday night.

The 15-lap feature event had a front row of Kevin Tremblay and Brock Leibhart, a three-wide battle broke out right away as Connor Schwien used the middle lane to split the front row to take the race lead.

Lap two saw Madison Reed jump to fourth after going three wide in turns three and four. Meanwhile, Connor Schwien was running away from the field. Late in the feature, Jake Schwien used a three-wide move and slider move to take over the fourth place. Meanwhile, the top three cars single-filed out, with Connor Schwien holding a huge lead.

Connor Schwien picked up the feature win, Rileigh Flohrs was second, Kiowa Higdon was third, Jake Schwien was fourth, and Madison Reed was fifth. Rileigh Flohrs was the hard charger in the event, gaining four spots, while Connor, Jake Schwien and Dave Kappel all gained three spots each.

The stock cars were second on the program they ran one eight-lap heat race won by Tathan Burkhart, and their 15-lap feature started with a front row of Josh Hudson and Tathan Burkhart.

Tathan rocketed to the early race lead and quickly Kyle Pfeifer settled into a battle with Josh Hudson for the second-place position.

Pfeifer had a better car going into the corner, but coming out of the corner, Hudson was able to pull away. At the halfway point Tathan held a full straightaway advantage over the second-place battle. 

One lap later, Kyle Pfeifer was able to gain the second-place position. Tathan went on to pick up the feature win, his second IMCA feature win of the season. Second was Kyle Pfeifer, third was Josh Hudson, fourth was Garrett Hager and fifth was Troy Burkhart. The hard charger in the event was Kyle Pfeifer, who gained two spots.

The hobby stocks were third on the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Trent Matson, Cody Williams and Jonathan Saliba. Their 20-lap feature had a front row of Cody Williams and Tyler Heath. Williams gained the early advantage.

Meanwhile, a four-wide battle broke out as Morgan and Zach Olmstead started pushing their way to the front of the pack. Lap two saw Zach Olmstead break into the top five.

A couple of laps later, Zach found himself in third place as Cody Williams entered lapped traffic. A couple of laps later, Williams got into heavy lapped traffic but still held a two-second lead over second-place running Tyler Heath.

At the halfway point, Cody Williams led over Tyler Heath, Zach Olmstead, Morgan Olmstead, and Jonathan Saliba. Alec Jeske went for a spin out of turn four and set up a late-race restart with just a handful of laps to go. 

Williams restarted the field and quickly pulled away again. Zach held second for a moment, but Tyler Heath was able to get it back, and Morgan got by his brother Zach as well.

Zach took the third place back down the backstretch. Meanwhile Williams checked out from the field and led the remainder of the feature. Cody Williams won, picking up his 15 IMCA feature win of the season, second was Tyler Heath, third was Zach Olmstead, fourth was Morgan Olmstead and fifth was Trent Matson.

The hard charger in the event was Billy McBride who grabbed nine spots, other nice runs included Zach Olmstead up seven spots, Morgan Olmstead and Taylor Croisant grabbed five spots each.

The sport mods were fourth on the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Blaine Walt, Luke Stallbaumer and Douglas Beaman, their 20-lap feature had a front row of Sage Dinkel and Dougals Beaman. Sage Dinkel grabbed the early race lead.

Meanwhile a four-wide battle broke out as Brianna Maughlin started moving forward. Luke Stallbaumer grabbed the lead out of turns three and four to lead the first lap and a debris caution came out.

Stallbaumer restarted the field, and the caution came right back out as Sam McCune and Dylan Jacobson went for a spin in turn two. Stallbaumer restarted the field again, and Maughlin was able to get to the third-place position right away. 

A couple of laps later, Dalton Bell, Tyler Watts and Blaine Walt started moving to the front. Maughlin got by Beaman for second place, and Blaine Walt settled into fourth place.

Later on, Blaine Walt was able to get to second place in search of his 100th career win. Walt would be denied his big win, though, as Luke Stallbaumer ran a perfect race to pick up his first feature win of the season.

 Second was Blaine Walt, third was Brianna Maughlin, fourth was Jacob Olmstead and fifth was Tyler Watts. The hard chargers in the event were Blaine Walt and Jacob Olmstead who gained eight spots each. Other nice runs included Brady Skrdlant up seven spots, Brianna Maughlin, Ryan Moser and Brendyn Nordyke all gained five spots each as well.

The modifieds closed out the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Dylan Sherfick, Daniel Gottschalk and Dakota Sproul. Their 20-lap feature started with a front row of Trevor Geist and Don Geist. 

Trevor gained the early advantage, but quickly, Kyle Rohleder settled into second place and took the lead on lap two. By lap four, Dylan Sherfick found third place, and a lap later, Trevor Geist settled into second place.

 Jeremy Frenier reached third place just before a caution came out. Rohleder restarted the field, and Clay Money quickly made a three-wide move to pick up a position.

 Meanwhile at the halfway point, Dylan Sherfick and Kyle Rohleder raced side-by-side for the race lead. In the closing laps Dalton Murphy spun to bring out a caution after Rohleder had solidified the race lead once again. 

Rohleder restarted the field with just five laps to go and would lead the reminder of the feature to grab his first win of the season.

 </figure>The sport mods were fourth on the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Blaine Walt, Luke Stallbaumer and Douglas Beaman, their 20-lap feature had a front row of Sage Dinkel and Dougals Beaman. Sage Dinkel grabbed the early race lead.Meanwhile a four-wide battle broke out as Brianna Maughlin started moving forward. Luke Stallbaumer grabbed the lead out of turns three and four to lead the first lap and a debris caution came out.Stallbaumer restarted the field, and the caution came right back out as Sam McCune and Dylan Jacobson went for a spin in turn two. Stallbaumer restarted the field again, and Maughlin was able to get to the third-place position right away. A couple of laps later, Dalton Bell, Tyler Watts and Blaine Walt started moving to the front. Maughlin got by Beaman for second place, and Blaine Walt settled into fourth place.Later on, Blaine Walt was able to get to second place in search of his 100th career win. Walt would be denied his big win, though, as Luke Stallbaumer ran a perfect race to pick up his first feature win of the season. Second was Blaine Walt, third was Brianna Maughlin, fourth was Jacob Olmstead and fifth was Tyler Watts. The hard chargers in the event were Blaine Walt and Jacob Olmstead who gained eight spots each. Other nice runs included Brady Skrdlant up seven spots, Brianna Maughlin, Ryan Moser and Brendyn Nordyke all gained five spots each as well.The modifieds closed out the program. They ran three eight-lap heat races won by Dylan Sherfick, Daniel Gottschalk and Dakota Sproul. Their 20-lap feature started with a front row of Trevor Geist and Don Geist. Trevor gained the early advantage, but quickly, Kyle Rohleder settled into second place and took the lead on lap two. By lap four, Dylan Sherfick found third place, and a lap later, Trevor Geist settled into second place. Jeremy Frenier reached third place just before a caution came out. Rohleder restarted the field, and Clay Money quickly made a three-wide move to pick up a position. Meanwhile at the halfway point, Dylan Sherfick and Kyle Rohleder raced side-by-side for the race lead. In the closing laps Dalton Murphy spun to bring out a caution after Rohleder had solidified the race lead once again. Rohleder restarted the field with just five laps to go and would lead the reminder of the feature to grab his first win of the season.Second place was Dylan Sherfick, third was Daniel Gottschalk, fourth was Jeremy Frenier and fifth was Dakota Sproul. The hard charger in the event was Jesse Richter, who gained eight spots. Other nice runs included Jeremy Frenier up seven spots, and Dylan Sherfick and Daniel Gottschalk both grabbed five spots each.The next scheduled event in Hays is Saturday, June 8's First Responder Night Presented by Casey's.
