Recent record-setting high temperatures in Hays have many people thinking of spring, including participants in the Downtown Hays Market, who are looking forward to the popular program's annual opening.

"Vendor registration officially opened March 1," said Julie Ryder, executive director of the Downtown Hays Development Corporation, "and we've been getting a lot of calls about how that registration process works."

The market opens Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 25, and will run weekly through October 19, 7:30-11:30 a.m.

The market debuted in 2013 and is now in its 11th year. Last year, it was voted the&nbsp;<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/c9dcf8aa-4a97-4821-b756-50bcf96635cc">Best Market in Kansas</a> in the&nbsp;15th-annual America’s Farmers Market Celebration, sponsored by&nbsp;American Farmland Trust and the Farmers Market Coalition.&nbsp;

"We're really blessed to have Ben Dome back for a third season as the market manager," she said. Dome is a local student whose position is made possible through the regional&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nex-generation.org/">NexGeneration Internship program</a>.

To participate in the 2024 market, potential vendors must read and sign the registration form. The four-page packet includes the market rules vendors must follow, details about what they'll be selling at the market, a copy of their Kansas sales tax registration certificate and their contact information.

"Some of our vendors drive from as far away as 80 miles to Hays," Ryder said, "arriving here just before daybreak."

Last year, the market had 63 vendors, selling everything from produce and locally raised meats to garden flowers and baked goods, plus lots of homemade crafts and gift items.

A $50 registration fee allows participation in all 22 weeks of the market. There is also an optional $50 reservation fee for the same spot&nbsp;each week in the downtown pavilion, 10th and Main, or adjacent parking areas.

"Many of our long-time vendors choose this option because it helps their customers know where to find them each week," Ryder said. "It has also created wonderful comradery among the vendors as they've gotten to know their neighbors."

The market is set up to accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)&nbsp;payments.&nbsp;

Customers may use their EBT cards to purchase tokens to use at vendors' booths to purchase eligible foods, including fresh produce, meat, eggs, honey, baked goods and dairy items.

Also available is another state assistance program, Double Up Food Bucks, allowing customers to match their SNAP purchases of up to $25. Tokens are then used to buy more fruits, vegetables and seed packets.&nbsp;

"Vendors who sell eligible food products can sign up with us to accept these forms of payment. When they accept those tokens as payment, they turn them back into us monthly, and we use a reporting process to the state for their reimbursement," she said.

The Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus Preparing For 56th Anniversary Show "We Believe in Music" to be presented April 6, 2024, at the Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center on the Fort Hays State campus. There will be two shows: 2 pm and 7 pm.

Show Chairman this year is Roger Day and the chapter coach, Dr. Terry Crull, the Director of Choral Activities at Ft. Hays State University, will be emcee for the event this year.

Joining the Hays High Plains Chorus on stage for this 56th anniversary show will be the Tumbleweed Chorus from Colby and chapter quartets: Uncalled Four, Prairie Timbre and Big Creek.

Tumbleweed program features the Newfangled Four

DOWNS - The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasstorytellingfestival.com/">Kansas Storytelling Festival</a>, now in its 30th year, is set to captivate audiences with a diverse lineup of nationally acclaimed tellers, regional talent, and engaging workshops. Held in the charming storytelling capital of Kansas, this year's festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of the timeless art of oral storytelling.

Scheduled for April 26 and 27, the festival will feature five nationally achieved tellers who will enchant audiences with their captivating tales. 30th annual Kansas Storytelling Festival celebrate rich tradition

A favorite page updates me daily on how many days remain til Spring arrives; however, I don’t need notices because friends post photos of budding trees and blooming crocuses. Lengthening sunshine, robins appearing, and sandhill cranes winging north direct me to search for sprouting tulips and daffodils as well as evidence of last fall’s scattered seeds germinating in our flower beds. These may not flash neon, but hints that spring lurks around the corner pop up daily in our yard.

One clue is a crazy tulip ring our two little granddaughters and I planted two falls ago that recently thrust a couple of inches of pointy green leaves through crusty soil. The wacky orb we three girls created that afternoon is as jabberwocky as it was the day we planted it despite me urging little blondes to keep it straight. I’m so glad natural inclinations took over, leaving intriguing protuberances and indentions in our masterpiece. That crazy shape adds so much joy to the blooms and reminds me of blessed time with loved ones new to digging orderly holes and burying bulbs.

Last fall, to complement the tulips, I tucked in a line of daffodils along a patio where we set bird baths. The stems haven’t emerged but bulges reminiscent of gloriously pregnant bellies tell me I’ll see green any day. I can’t wait to watch breezes make ruffled, yellow cups dance and invite neighborhood bees to hide inside.

After inspecting this emergent behavior, I checked last year’s flower bed to see what magic had worked it way to the surface. Sure enough, bachelor button leaves stretch toward sun rays along with tiny sprouts still too small to identify. I intentionally flung seeds of flowers I saw hummers or butterflies visiting last summer into every bed in the yard. Here’s hoping their blooms invite scores of favorite visitors.

To guarantee we’ll have ample nectar and pollen to entice more guests, I picked up seed packets at a local store. Now that some of last fall’s seeds have shot up tiny, curled leaves, I’ll add new varieties to the mix. If long term forecasters hit their mark regarding moisture predications, we’ll enjoy action in the flower garden until next fall’s first hard frost.

As protection for bees and other pollinators through the winter, we leave dead and decomposing stalks, stems, and leaves to cover overwintering pollinators. As a bonus, birds we feed hide in the tumbled piles from a Cooper’s Hawk who passes through at least one a week seeking dinner. I’ve started cleaning a few of those to prepare our potato plot for planting somewhere around St. Patrick’s Day. It takes all my patience to keep from rushing to clear everything to bare soil. I’m so ready to garden, but we still have frigid temps ahead and pollinators need any help we can offer.

Though I love autumn best, thoughts of giving myself a tilled-soil French manicure sets every eager-to-plant nerve in me on fire. When Spring lurks, more patience exits with every warm breeze.

MADORIN: When spring lurks

We are hiring CDL Drivers (A or B) with a hazmat endorsement, or ability to acquire one, for our oilfield wireline company. ELI would also consider helping the right people obtain a CDL license. The job will require rigging for wireline operations.

Applicants should be able to work outdoors and have the ability to lift 75 pounds. Typical 40-hour work week with overtime in peak season. Some weekend work and occasional travel out of state is required. Light maintenance, cleaning and mechanical work of vehicles &amp; equipment is also involved. 24/7 on-call rotation is also a requirement of this position.

Fort Hays State University has finished cleaning and maintenance to address mold issues in McMindes Hall.

On Sept. 13, iSi Environmental conducted inspections in 20 rooms within Victor E. Village and McMindes Hall, a common area in McMindes Hall, and two adjacent outdoor spaces.&nbsp;An inspection on Oct. 24 reported low to moderate levels of two common potential allergen mold types.

University officials met with iSi and representatives of Restore and Clean on Wednesday. Restore and Clean is cleaned rooms in McMindes and will soon start in Victor E. Village.

The complete iSi report from February was released Wednesday.&nbsp;Scott Cason, FHSU's chief communications officer, said the university is trying to be transparent about the issue and met with students living in the residence halls and staff to answer questions about the iSi reports and the cleaning process.

The report said although two common kinds of mold were found in McMindes Hall, only normal levels of outdoor molds were found in Victor E. Village.

Although the types of mold found can inflame allergies for those sensitive to mold, no black mold, which can be associated with more severe health concerns, was found.

Cason said the university still intends to proceed with cleaning and maintenance on Victor E. Village.

During iSi's inspection in February, the company found insulation in the HVAC units in some of the McMindes rooms had become detached and allowed condensation and mold growth within the units.

The problem couldn't be seen from outside of the units. The adhesive holding the insulation in place had likely broken down over time, Cason said.

The university replaced the insulation in all the units and cleaned the HVAC units and the rooms.

iSi also recommended cleaning the tops of the thermal pipes in the McMindes Hall ceiling, which has also been completed.

"We want to be thorough," Cason said. "We want to be able to tell our students and our parents that we were thorough and we did our due diligence to make sure those rooms were not just as mold-free as we can get them but as allergen-free as we can get them."

Cason said Restore and Clean primarily found cleaning issues and little mold.

On its initial inspection, iSi found several rooms with poor housekeeping conditions, including overflowing trash and recycling cans, dirty dishes, and dirty laundry, which could promote mold, the report said.

The follow-up inspection in February noted fewer of these problems.

However, it urged the university to instruct room occupants to maintain their rooms. 

• Do not allow trash and recyclables to accumulate, especially those with sugary residue. • Dust surfaces as needed to avoid dust accumulation that might allow mold growth. • Do not allow damp towels and clothing to accumulate in the room, especially in unventilated areas such as baskets. • Wash and thoroughly dry bed linens and dirty clothes to avoid odors and the accumulation of moisture and body oils that encourage bacteria, mold and dust mites, the report said.

About 1,300 FHSU students live on campus. As of February, 67 work orders concerning mold have been requested.

Neither McMindes Hall nor Victor E. Village has been closed to students during the mold inspection and cleaning process. Students were asked to vacate their rooms for a few hours while individual rooms were cleaned.

Cason said Restore and Clean was able to complete its work in McMindes much faster than projected. The university is still working with the company on the timeline for the cleaning at Victor E. Village, but Cason said he anticipated a similar timeline.

He said students there will also only be asked to leave their rooms briefly during cleaning.

If students still have concerns about mold in their room, the university is requesting they submit work orders.&nbsp;

If you have a medically documented sensitivity to mold or other allergens and believe that your room conditions are of concern, you can talk with Residential Life staff&nbsp;at 785-628-4245 about the process for requesting room adjustments, the university said in a FAQ on its website.

Cason said the university is working with Restore and Clean to develop a cleaning and maintenance plan to help prevent future issues.

"There is going to be some learning for our maintenance staff that we are going to put to work," he said.

Cason said campus student health had not reported an increased respiratory illness since the mold concerns were raised.

The university has been discussing the issue with the Ellis County Health Department and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

KDHE has been preparing a survey of FHSU students who live or lived in McMindes Hall or Victor E. Village between the beginning of the academic year and now to determine if there has been a spike in respiratory illness.

Students who live or lived in any other campus residence halls and submitted a mold-related work order should also receive the survey.

That survey should be completed by the end of the week, and results should be available in about a month.

"One of the challenges in this process is there are so many things that can cause respiratory problems," Cason said. "Mold is one of them, but so are dust mites, so is COVID or the flu or a head cold."

FHSU finishes mold remediation in McMindes; inspection reports released

The position will be responsible for responding to queries, running diagnostic programs, isolating problems, determining viable resolutions, and implementing the appropriate solutions. Ellis Co. approves bid for completion of Cathedral Ave. work

Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling reported to the Ellis County Commission Tuesday on grant funds from the Kansas Secretary of State that the county was awarded to purchase equipment to enhance election security.

The county was awarded&nbsp;$7,980 and will be required to provide a match of&nbsp;$886.

Eight precinct transfer bags: These bags contain the election night results and provisional ballots, advance mail ballots that are dropped off at the poll site, and ballots that did not run through the counting machine. These are locked at the poll site and delivered to the election office on election night.

Two cameras for the drop box in the County Administration Building alley for advance mail ballots. One camera was already in place, but adding two more allows the vehicle to be seen coming down the alley and leaving the drop box.

It also preserves the image of the person in the vehicle dropping off the ballot and the number of ballots being dropped off. The law allows one person to drop off a maximum of 10 ballots.

The drop box is checked once a day by two people — one Democrat and one Republican. It takes two keys to open the box.

One camera was installed in the room in the election office that holds ballots. It shows who is entering/exiting the room and what they are doing in the room.

Access control: The room that holds county election equipment will now only be accessed by badge entry. This will record anyone entering the room. Access will be limited to election office personnel and the buildings and grounds department, as the main water valve is in that room.

Ellis County receives grants to improve election security

Last week, I discussed the benefits of outdoor play. Next, I would like to explore ideas and get creative on things to do outside to hopefully spark your own imagination on how to make outside time more appealing to children than electronics. Be a good role model for your children and spend time outside yourself! Sometimes we have to make it a priority for it to happen. Don’t overthink it and it doesn’t always have to be complicated or elaborate.

· Nature Study-take a camera and a notebook-start a nature collection or have a scavenger hunt

· Visit a farm, orchard, botanical garden

· Pick flowers and make May Day baskets (May 1st)

· Fishing, hunting, camping (age appropriate, could be real or make believe)

I hope this encourages you to get outside and enjoy whatever weather we are having right now. I have fond memories of playing football and visiting several parks on a weekend afternoons while

enjoying a snack along the way with my children when they were younger. Now I enjoy taking my dogs for a walk, especially when my husband tags along.

I always admired a neighbor of mine that had young children. I would see them outside in all kinds of weather, different times of the day, for different lengths of time. Sometimes the parents were outside with them doing a structured activity and other times the older kids would be outside on their own. They gardened, walked, rode bikes and scooters, went to the pool, played ball games, among many other activities. This allowed them to spend time together as a family and enjoy the benefits of physical activity as well as the outdoors. I think they also used it as a way to help their children calm down on trying days. By creating a change of scenery, it allowed the child to get out some emotions or pent up energy. What a great idea to help children learn to manage their emotions. What if when we were stressed or upset about something we took a walk or jog to sort out our feelings rather than eating something that was bad for us or going shopping?

KOERNER: Outdoor play

Hays High School’s production of
“Daddy’s Girl” serves up a full menu of laughs when it takes the stage at 7
p.m. on March 7-9 at 12th Street Auditorium.

The play centers around Benard Muloovy, owner of
Maudie’s Diner, who gets served a plate of comic chaos when his deceased wife,
Maudie, takes up residence in a painting on the wall of the Kansas City eatery.
Maudie enlists the services of an angel, Michael, to reunite Bernard with their
long-lost daughter, Elizabeth.

True to his mischievous nature, Michael delivers
two Elizabeths, and Benard’s task is to decide which young woman is his real
daughter. The play comes fully seasoned with a host of zany characters and
features a few twists and turns on its way to a heartwarming conclusion. 

The two-act show spreads a gentle message about
the importance of living in the present and appreciating those who enrich our
lives.

“Our last two spring plays (“Anne
of Green Gables” and “The Curious Savage”) had timelines from the past,” said
director Bill Gasper. “The cast suggested that we do something more modern that
features some over-the-top comedy and quirky characters. This play certainly
fits that description.”

In addition to “Daddy’s Girl,” the evening’s
entertainment will include several short, restaurant-related sketches that were
added to accommodate more students. Gasper said the “Bon Appétit” sketches are unrelated
to “Daddy’s Girl,” although some take place on the main stage.

&nbsp;“As with
most non-musical plays, the cast of “Daddy’s Girl” is relatively small,” Gasper
said. “My normal practice is to choose the cast and let other students know
they were not selected. Generally, it’s not an easy decision and the least
favorite thing I do as a director. However, I had some very good auditions this
year and decided to provide more students the opportunity to perform on stage.”

Twenty-two students appear on stage, with another
five serving various roles behind the scenes.

“This cast is very experienced and very
talented,” Gasper said. “It certainly is a privilege to work with students who
enjoy theater and who are willing to put in the time and effort to present a
quality production,” Gasper said. “I encourage the community to come out and
enjoy an evening of light-hearted comedy and excellent student performances.”

entertainment will include several short, restaurant-related sketches that were
added to accommodate more students. Gasper said the “Bon Appétit” sketches are unrelated
to “Daddy’s Girl,” although some take place on the main stage.&nbsp;“As with
most non-musical plays, the cast of “Daddy’s Girl” is relatively small,” Gasper
said. “My normal practice is to choose the cast and let other students know
they were not selected. Generally, it’s not an easy decision and the least
favorite thing I do as a director. However, I had some very good auditions this
year and decided to provide more students the opportunity to perform on stage.”Twenty-two students appear on stage, with another
five serving various roles behind the scenes.“This cast is very experienced and very
talented,” Gasper said. “It certainly is a privilege to work with students who
enjoy theater and who are willing to put in the time and effort to present a
quality production,” Gasper said. “I encourage the community to come out and

Hays High to present comedy, ‘Daddy’s Girl,’ Thursday through Saturday

For more than 20 years, Rex Havens, comedian and motivational speaker, has entertained audiences around the world with his insightful observations about the hilarious miscommunications that populate our personal lives. He will present “Women &amp; Children First: after that it’s every man for himself” for the Western Plains Arts Association.

Hoxie High School Auditorium is the venue for this make-up program slated from 3 p.m. central, Sunday, March 17. Admission is by WPAA season ticket or $20 adults, $10 students at the door. The Dane G. Hansen Foundation is a major benefactor for this 54th WPAA season.

The United States Air Force Academy Band: Academy Winds, is coming to Colby Community College’s Frahm Theatre, Monday, March 18, for a 7:30 p.m. central recital. While WPAA is helping to promote this event, all are invited to this free event.

Western Plains Arts Association announces comedian, military ensemble

Award recognizes Rooks County Health Center’s dedication to improving health in Plainville and Rooks County

PLAINVILLE—Rooks County Health Center has been recognized as a Health Quality Innovator for 2023. The Health Quality Innovator Awards is the annual awards program created by Health Quality Innovators (HQI) that recognizes and celebrates organizations that are using successful, evidence-based approaches to improve health care quality and outcomes.

Rooks County Health Center was selected as a runner-up in the Workforce Resiliency category for their collaborative work with USD #270 and the Plainville Wellness Coalition in building the Nest Daycare at USD #270 with a second Nest Daycare being constructed on the RCH Campus. This award category recognizes the efforts of organizations committed to implementing initiatives or programs within their organization aimed at reducing burnout, increasing workforce wellness, improving retention and reducing turnover.

Rooks County Health Center is a 22-bed Critical Access Hospital located in Plainville, KS. With 170 employees, the hospital is the largest employer in Plainville (population 1,746) and Rooks County (population 4,937).

“We’re incredibly proud for the Nest Daycare Projects to be recognized as a Health Quality Innovator of the Year,” said Stephanie Bjornstad, CEO at Rooks County Health Center. “This is truly a collaborative effort among an incredible team of people working to improve the health of this community. We were honored to be the only healthcare facility in Kansas to be recognized by HQI as a Health Quality Innovator of the Year.”

USD #270, the Plainville Wellness Coalition and Rooks County Health Center have worked together on grant opportunities to construct a Nest Daycare and Preschool that is currently operating on the USD #270 campus. The Nest Daycare provides daycare for up to 12 children. The preschool runs 2 classes for 3- and 4-year-olds in both the mornings and afternoons. The next Nest Daycare is currently being constructed on the RCH campus and will also provide daycare for up to 12 children and will be staffed and managed by USD #270.

Bjornstad stated, “We are excited to be a partner with USD #270 and the Plainville Wellness Coalition to provide a daycare facility for our employees and the community at large at this time when daycare is such a need in our community.”

The Kiwanis Club of Hays is pleased to announce it’s Legion of Honor recipients for the 2023-2024 membership year.

This year’s Legion of Honor recipients were joined by fellow members serving 25 years or more at the luncheon.
