He worked hard on improving himself in order to be eligible to graduate with his associates degree from Wichita State University of Applied Science &amp; Technology, Wichita, KS.

This young man persevered and stayed strong through some tough and unfortunate challenges during his years of high school. Enduring the tough losses of loved ones and going through a difficult journey of self-alignment, he decided he didn’t want life’s lemons like everyone else, he wants the whole damn tree.

Chase took it upon himself to search the state and find the most affordable classes that he could take in order to be qualified for an associate’s degree in Financial Administration. Nitpicking every individual class through-out all the community colleges in the state of Kansas to find the most cost-effective avenue to become the first senior in the history of Victoria High School, USD #432 to graduate high school and college at the same time.

All the trials and tribulations could’ve easily tipped the scales of life, leaving Chase to go down a dark path, yet he persevered and set an example for his peers. Encountering an unknown territory and creating a trail for the students who want more from life to follow.

Shortly before graduation Chase solely created and copyrighted “The Guided Growth Program." This program intends to help struggling and misunderstood students to find a better path and to live a better life. After seeking help and obtaining knowledge from a Masters of Social Work graduate of The University of Kansas, Chase created this program to aid all students involved and to help the struggling education system. The system is student autonomous and includes a situation-based balance system if ever in the need of guidance.

Watch out for this young man, as he continues to make a greater difference and making everything he touches better, for himself and those around him.

Victoria student graduates high school, college in same semester

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas is proud to announce a grant award from the Heartland Community Foundation in the amount of $2,929.94. The grant will go toward the purchase of manikins and training supplies for the benefit and safety of individuals served by DSNWK in the Hays area.

DSNWK employees participate in various training sessions throughout the year to meet the needs of the individuals receiving services. These trainings include First Aid (FA), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) provided by DSNWK certified trainers through the American Heart Association (AHA), and MANDT Training (a behavioral crisis interaction training) which teaches prevention and de-escalation concepts to help them safely manage behavior so that everyone can be safe in their environment.

Heartland Catbackers golf tournament, banquet, scholarship auction set

TMP-Marian is pleased to announce the new faculty joining the school for the 2024-25 school year.

Fr. Fred Gatschet will return to Thomas More Prep-Marian where he had taught Religion for 12 years. Many former students have commented on the positive impact Fr. Fred had on their lives and Catholic faith.

Father will teach sophomore religion (Old and New Testament) while also being the pastor for St. Joseph Church in Hays.

"Moving back to Hays came as kind of a surprise to me, but I am looking forward to teaching again at TMP-Marian and renewing a lot of friendships that I had made during my previous tenure of 19 years in Ellis County,” Fr. Fred said.

Fr. Brian McCaffrey will join the Monarchs as co-school chaplain along with Fr. Andy Hammeke and Fr. Earl Befort. Fr. Brian has been teaching and practicing youth ministry at Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School in Salina for the past three years.

Fr. Brian graduated from KU with a degree in secondary education in 2015. He studied at Conception Seminary and Saint Meinrad Seminary, and was ordained in 2021. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the Hays community,” Fr. Brian said. “I look forward to working with and serving the students and staff at TMP-M.”

Fr. Brian will be active at the school for building relationships with the students, providing access to the sacraments, and guest-instructing in various classrooms. “Fr. Brian will be a great asset in counseling and mentoring students and staff alike,” principal Chad Meitner said.

Matt ‘97 Brown is the new Career and Technical Education teacher and Creative Learning Building Director at TMP-Marian. He grew up in Hays and graduated from TMP-Marian in 1997.

After obtaining his BS in Secondary Education from Ft. Hays State University (FHSU) in 2002, he began his teaching career at Ransom High School. He also taught at Otis-Bison Jr/Sr High School for 9 years during which he earned his MS in Tech Education in 2010, also from FHSU.

Most recently, Mr. Brown taught 11 years at Ruppenthal Middle and Russell High School as the Career and Tech Education teacher. He will lead TMP-Marian’s new Creative Learning Building, which will include classes and instruction in fabrications, computer aided drafting (CAD), welding, STEM, wood shop, and cross curricular outreach to help other teachers use the new facilities.

“I am excited to teach back at my alma mater and build the Career and Tech Ed (CTE) department,” Brown said. Brown is married to Natalie (Major) ‘99 Brown and has three children AJ ‘24, Avery ‘29, and Nicholas ‘32.

Erika Litson will be the new Biology and general science teacher. Ms. Litson grew up in Centennial, CO. She earned her BS in Chemistry and Humanities from Azusa Pacific University (CA). Awarded the prestigious Noyce Post-Baccalaureate Stipend, Ms. Litson is currently earning her MS in Secondary Science Education from FHSU. She is expected to complete the degree this December.

Ms. Litson is familiar with the TMP-Marian science department and students because she did her student teaching there during the 2024 spring semester. When asked to describe the main element of her teaching style, Ms. Litson cited increasing student critical thinking skills through group projects and problem solving exercises.

She is also a strong advocate for student mental health awareness and advocacy, making it a priority to build strong relationships with her students. “I am very excited to officially join TMP-M and help students grow into the people God intends them to be!” Ms. Litson said. She will also be the co-StuCo advisor with Mrs. Melissa Pinkney for the coming school year.

Blaine Maier brings a wealth of experience and passion to the high school math department. Mr. Maier graduated from FHSU in 1983 with a BS in Mathematics. He earned his MS in Physical Science in 1989. Mr. Maier has taught math at Phillipsburg and Hoxie before his most recent teaching position at Ruppenthal Middle and Russell High School. He has taught at Russell since 1998.

He and his wife Lori have been married for almost 40 years. Lori was a hospice nurse for most of her career but is now working as a school nurse for Russell. The Maiers have 2 grown children and 2 grandchildren.

Also, Mr. Maier has a unique hobby - he raises and shows rabbits. Mr. Maier is a licensed judge with the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

“I'm looking forward to working with the TMP-Marian family and helping students reach their academic goals,” Mr. Maier said. “I have always been involved with and supportive of student activities but emphasize that academic achievement is paramount.”

Max Befort will be the new JH/HS band director and HS choir teacher. Mr. Befort will also be the Pop Singers supervisor. He graduated from FHSU with his BA in Music Composition in 2019.

After teaching two years at Trego County USD 208, Mr. Befort most recently taught vocal and instrumental music for the past three years at Victoria USD 432.

He enjoys bowling, golf, PC building, classic car restoration, and to perform and sing with local vocal and instrumental groups.

Megan Gottschalk joins the junior high team at TMP-Marian as the 6th grade mathematics and science teacher. Familiar to the Monarch family, Mrs. Gottschalk previously taught PE at Holy Family Elementary and is the current high school volleyball coach. She earned her BA in Elementary Education from the University of Wyoming in 2004.

In addition to teaching PE, Mrs. Gottschalk has taught 3rd and 4th grades as a classroom teacher, with an emphasis on math, science, and social studies. She was a 4-year letterwinner for the University of Wyoming volleyball team, earning Mountain West Conference All-Academic Team honors in 2003. Megan is married to TJ ‘00 Gottschalk and has four children, Teagan ‘25, Adilyn ‘28, Jonah ‘31, and Remington ‘33.

Konnor ‘18 Splichal will be the 7-12th grades JH and HS art teacher. After graduating from TMP-Marian in 2018, Mr. Splichal earned his BA in Fine Arts from FHSU in 2022. His specialties include ceramics where his work has been honored every year by various organizations, including the Hays Arts Council and the Moss-Thornes Gallery.

Mr. Splichal has also conducted numerous workshops, including a Wheel Throwing Workshop at TMP-Marian in 2023. He has worked closely with outgoing art instructor, Nancy Flax, to fine tune his instructional skills while getting to know the TMP-Marian art program and students.

Brandon Smith will be the junior high vocal teacher. He is part-time while he also earns his Master’s Degree from FHSU. During the 2021-22 school year, Mr. Smith was a long-term 5th grade substitute teacher for Garden City USD 457.

Mr. Smith has sung in and participated in choir for around 14 years and composes music.

Rebecca Windholz is the new high school Special Education teacher. She is taking the place of another Mrs. Windholz, Rhonda, who moved to Tennessee over the summer.

Rebecca Windholz is originally from Hoxie, and currently lives in WaKeeney. Mrs. Windholz taught for five years at schools in Trego USD 208. Most recently she was a fiscal auditor for the Kansas State Department of Education.

Mrs. Windholz will put her Masters Degree as a reading/instructional specialist to good use helping students in a variety of high school courses. “Developing positive relationships with each student is crucial for the learning process,” Mrs. Windholz said. “I believe every student wants to feel valued and heard. Setting high expectations for them…with a solid relationship will ensure that they are learning at their maximum potential.”

Other teaching assignment announcements - James Harris will return to the classroom and teach 7-8th PE. And finally, Rick Binder and Joe Pfannenstiel will teach agriculture classes and sponsor the TMP-Marian Chapter of the FFA.

 </figure>Blaine Maier brings a wealth of experience and passion to the high school math department. Mr. Maier graduated from FHSU in 1983 with a BS in Mathematics. He earned his MS in Physical Science in 1989. Mr. Maier has taught math at Phillipsburg and Hoxie before his most recent teaching position at Ruppenthal Middle and Russell High School. He has taught at Russell since 1998.He and his wife Lori have been married for almost 40 years. Lori was a hospice nurse for most of her career but is now working as a school nurse for Russell. The Maiers have 2 grown children and 2 grandchildren.Also, Mr. Maier has a unique hobby - he raises and shows rabbits. Mr. Maier is a licensed judge with the American Rabbit Breeders Association.“I'm looking forward to working with the TMP-Marian family and helping students reach their academic goals,” Mr. Maier said. “I have always been involved with and supportive of student activities but emphasize that academic achievement is paramount.”<figure>

She was a 4-year letterwinner for the University of Wyoming volleyball team, earning Mountain West Conference All-Academic Team honors in 2003. Megan is married to TJ ‘00 Gottschalk and has four children, Teagan ‘25, Adilyn ‘28, Jonah ‘31, and Remington ‘33.<figure>

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker. • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on June 27 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the system.&nbsp; Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke coming from the kitchen exhaust system. Crews made entry and found the fire in the kitchen had been extinguished by the building’s automatic fire sprinkler system.

Crews extinguished hot spots and ventilated the building. All occupants made it safely out of the building with no injuries. One firefighter was treated and released on scene due to heat exhaustion.

The cause of the fire is determined to be accidental. The fire was contained to the kitchen.

Gella's announced on its Facebook page it will be temporarily closed while it deals with fire cleanup.

Hays Fire Department responds to fire at Gella's in Hays

After efforts over the last several years to increase the number of child care slots available in Ellis County, in-home child care providers are expressing concerns about filling their child care spots.

Child Care Aware, the state referral agency for child care, is still estimating a deficit of <a href="https://ks.childcareaware.org/data-research/">410 child care spots in Ellis County, according to Child Care Aware data as of Wednesday.</a>

The Child Care Task Force of Ellis County members on Tuesday night discussed ways to connect families needing care with providers who have open spots.

Andrea Hoss, in-home child care provider, said she once had a waiting list, but now she struggles to find children to fill her child care.

Hoss said next August she will be losing four children to kindergarten.

"It's next year that I'm really getting stressed about," she said.

Hoss said she has been in contact with two in-home providers who may be closing their businesses because they can't fill all of their spots.

"That's the biggest obstacle," Hoss said. "Most everyone has one or two open slots in my circle of people."

Donna Hudson-Hamilton, Early Childhood Connections director, said ECC has funds to partner with private child care providers to provide care to children who are on the waiting list for its programs.

The Department of Children and Family Service pays part of the cost of some spots, and ECC pays the rest.

The providers must meet requirements to participate. All the spots need to be for full-time care.

The providers retain their businesses, and the ECC contracts with providers, Hudson-Hamilton said.

Not all of the slots require the provider to be Department of Children and Family Services certified, but if providers are certified, they would be eligible to care for more children across programs, Hudson-Hamilton said.

ECC can also assist with some equipment if providers meet grant requirements, training and curriculum.

The child care task force is also including information in welcome buckets about the Child Care Aware Referral program.

The task force also voted to renew a marketing campaign with Eagle Communications, which will promote information about how families can find child care and how to choose a child care provider.

The task force discussed applying for grants to support providers.

Dana Stanton, child care program specialist for the Northwest Kansas Economic Innovation Center, said although foundations are willing to provide funds to support nonprofits, funds are not as available for for-profit providers.

Tori Ruder, in-home provider, said funds are needed for established providers to replace equipment.

Providers said these extra costs are beginning to fall on families.

Ruder said one local provider charges an annual enrollment fee to help cover supplies and equipment.

Hoss said she requires her families to provide a portable playpen and fitted sheet for new infants.

Sarah Wasinger, task force facilitator, said the group is working to become a partnership with the K-State 105 program.

The partnership could involve offering providers safety equipment such as carbon dioxide detectors, batteries for detectors, flashlights, first-aid kits and other safety supplies.

The task force is offering free fingerprinting services for childcare providers. Fingerprints are required for background checks and child care worker certification.

The next fingerprinting dates are 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Hays Welcome Center and 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall and Catering in Hays.

Monique Koerner of K-State Extension said child care providers can receive a $30 stipend if they submit their children's art to the Ellis County Fair.

The next child care task force meeting will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 30 at the Hays Welcome Center, 2700 Vine.

The Victoria Community Coalition has invited child care providers to a meeting on child care opportunities at St. John's Place. The meeting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Victoria VFW,&nbsp;204 E. Main.

Ellis County Child Care Task Force working to connect providers, families

Each year, Fort Hays State’s Robbins College of Business and Entrepreneurship (RCOBE) recognizes an outstanding faculty member from its four academic departments.

Faculty of the Year honorees for 2023-2024 include:&nbsp;

Dr. Emily Breit, Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting, Dr. Rachel Dolechek, Department of Applied Business Studies, Dr. Anthony Gabel, Department of Management, and Mr. Stephen Schleicher, Department of Informatics.&nbsp;

The selection process is led by the Robbins Ambassador students each year and includes nominations from business students, surveys, and interviews with finalists. The 2023-2024 Robbins Ambassador students were Nathaniel Egan and Braden Schulte.

"I am incredibly grateful for my professors at Fort Hays State University for not only providing top-tier education but for the real-world experience,” Braden said. “At a smaller school like FHSU, the professors genuinely care about you beyond the classroom and go the extra mile to offer advice on internships, prospective jobs, and life in general."&nbsp;

FHSU business Faculty of the Year awards announced

Hays city commissioners will vote on a couple of essential and pricey items at their Thursday meeting.

First on the agenda is the recommended renewal of the city's property and liability insurance coverage with Midwest Public Risk for $454,221 for 2024-25. The premium is a 22.6% increase. 

Insurance Planning, Hays, provides oversight for the city as the insurance broker. Taylor Pfannenstiel, commercial lines executive, concluded that&nbsp;Midwest Public Risk offered the lowest cost option.&nbsp;

The commission is also expected to approve a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e42c46b-b466-4747-8cdc-a0a7f21ba4e3">$4.5 million project to replace the city's 8,500 water meters </a>with radio frequency advanced infrastructure metering.&nbsp;

No rate increase for water customers is expected. 

The city would instead issue a utility bond to pay for the project, taking advantage of an expiring 2009 utility system bond payment this year. A 20-year bond is anticipated.

Grow Hays is requesting the city to formalize an intent to issue industrial revenue bonds for The Grove.

Along with a mixed-housing development north of Hays Medical Center, Grow Hays plans to build a 14,000-square-foot facility to house the Hays Senior Center and a child care center.

The industrial revenue bonds will allow the developer to obtain a sales tax exemption for all purchases related to construction

Commissioners will also hear the May financial report from Kim Rupp, finance director, and consider the mayoral appointment of Brian Garrett to an unexpired term on the Hays Area Planning Commission/Hays Area Board of Zoning Appeals. The term will expire April 30, 2025.

 </figure>By BECKY KISER Hays PostHays city commissioners will vote on a couple of essential and pricey items at their Thursday meeting.First on the agenda is the recommended renewal of the city's property and liability insurance coverage with Midwest Public Risk for $454,221 for 2024-25. The premium is a 22.6% increase. Insurance Planning, Hays, provides oversight for the city as the insurance broker. Taylor Pfannenstiel, commercial lines executive, concluded that&nbsp;Midwest Public Risk offered the lowest cost option.&nbsp;<h2>Water meters</h2>The commission is also expected to approve a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e42c46b-b466-4747-8cdc-a0a7f21ba4e3">$4.5 million project to replace the city's 8,500 water meters </a>with radio frequency advanced infrastructure metering.&nbsp;No rate increase for water customers is expected. The city would instead issue a utility bond to pay for the project, taking advantage of an expiring 2009 utility system bond payment this year. A 20-year bond is anticipated.<h2>The Grove</h2>Grow Hays is requesting the city to formalize an intent to issue industrial revenue bonds for The Grove.<figure>

Hays City Commission to meet Thursday for vote on $4.5M water meter system

Extreme heat occurs when temperatures exceed 90 degrees, and in Kansas, humidity adds to the health risks associated with such high temperatures. In fact, extreme heat is the leading cause of death among all weather-related disasters. So, it’s important to understand how high temperatures affect us and how to protect ourselves in extreme heat.

Jeff Goodell, environmental author, describes two types of stress caused by the heat. The first is called classic heat stress, and it’s the typical heat exhaustion most of us are familiar with. High temperatures affect small children, seniors, and those with chronic conditions the most. This type of heat stress can cascade into heat stroke and eventually death if left untreated.

Exertional heat exhaustion is another type of heat stress that can put even the most fit, young, and vibrant people in danger. The body aims to maintain homeostasis including an internal temperature around 98.6 degrees. When physical labor raises the core temperature, the body must compensate by sweating and increasing blood flow to the skin. However, extreme heat can make it even more challenging to cool down. Symptoms of exertional heat exhaustion can include low blood pressure, hyperventilation, altered mental status, vomiting, and seizures. Once again, if symptoms are not addressed, death can result. Those who work outdoors such as construction workers, farmers, and athletes are at a high risk for exertional heat exhaustion.

Now that summer has officially arrived and temperatures are reaching triple digits, here are a few tips from the American Red Cross Association concerning extreme heat:

First, learn how to stay hydrated. An average person should drink about 3/4 of a gallon of water daily, but everyone’s needs vary. Avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic drinks that dehydrate the body. Also, if you sweat a lot, consider having a snack or a sports drink throughout the day to replenish electrolytes.

Next, make a plan. Brainstorm places you can go to cool down in case of a power outage. If you have air conditioning, replace filters and perform regular maintenance to ensure it’s working properly. Another way to avoid overheating is to wear lightweight, loose clothing. Also, be sure to check in with loved ones who are at high risk for heat exhaustion.

Finally, be prepared for the worst. You may not be able to prevent heat illness in others, so it’s imperative to recognize the signs. These can include excessive sweating, pale skin, altered mental status, and increased respiration. In severe cases, knowing CPR may be necessary. So, brush up on your First Aid skills or get trained.

As temperatures continue to rise, keep these tips in mind. Create a plan to respond to the heat and take care of yourself and your loved ones. Most of all, stay cool!

Dalene Juenemann and her father, Dean, had to make the difficult decision to enter hospice care after he was diagnosed with bladder cancer.

“He was just such a social guy and someone was in a couple times a week,” she said. “They were checking in on him and it was that security blanket he had.”

“He didn’t want to be in and out of hospital care and not doing his activities, especially because of his age,” she said.

He didn’t want to go through aggressive chemo and he didn’t qualify for a bladder removal because of his age.&nbsp;

“He chose quality of life,” she said.

"It was that final decision that we are done with everyone wanting a piece of me. I'm just going to enjoy life," she said.

Dalene's father, Dean Shearer, was a patient of NWKareS, Hospice of Northwest Kansas, which serves 16 counties from Interstate 70 to the Nebraska border and Trego County to the Colorado border.

Dalene and other family members who have been helped by hospice, as well as hospice volunteers, agreed to tell their stories in hopes of easing fears and urging other families to choose the service.

Dalene is a former resident of Hays. She now lives in Olathe, but her father was living in Norton.

Dalene visited her father every two weeks, but hospice helped fill the gap. Hospice staff contacted her and gave her regular updates on her dad’s condition. He was a hospice patient for about six months before he died.

Dalene said that finding medical supplies could be challenging because her father lived in a rural area. The hospice staff ensured he had all the medical supplies he needed.

“I find when I’m trying to encourage people that I get in contact with, it’s hard to stop putting their loved ones through all that because they’re just not ready to let their loved ones go,” Dalene said.

“I’ve also talked to someone that went ahead and did it all and said I wish we had never put him through it,” she said. “He would have had much more quality of life.”

Dalene said the social worker talked to her about her feelings and helped her prepare for her dad's death. She and her dad were very close.

"It’s a process. It’s more of an acceptance then," she said. "You’re never ready to say goodbye, but there’s very much an acceptance of what you’ve got going on in your life.

"You don't feel like you are going it alone," she said. "Because there are so many people there who you can lean on, and they are so knowledgeable of everything."

She said the extra care hospice offered allowed her to just be a daughter to her father as he was dying.

"My dad was so active. To be able to die like this with so much dignity and at home the way he wanted to, it was beautiful," she said. "I think as much as being with someone when a new life comes into the world, what an honor and blessing my brother and I felt it was to be there with our mom and our dad."

"I felt all of [the hospice workers] have supported and helped us immensely," she said. "Don’t cheat yourself of having such a great experience."

On the day her father died, the hospice nurse, Norma, who had been working with Dean, volunteered to come to his bedside on her day off.

"Once she got there, he just let go and let everything take its course," Dalene said.&nbsp;

"I was telling Dad to let go and goodbye and I said, 'Just go toward the light, Dad.' Norma was standing at the door, and she said she just saw this tear come down the side of my dad's face, and that was it.

“That is the kind of peace you want for your family members who pass,” Dalene said.

Cathy Harrison's husband, Don, was a hospice patient. Her family had a unique perspective. She and Don had been funeral directors in Colby for more than 40 years, and Don had been a long-time hospice board member.

“In the families who we served, we could see how hospice services coming in during those last months and during those last weeks and even last hours helped the family be healthy in their grief," Cathy said.

She said hospice helps guide people through what to expect in the dying process.

“If you have decided to make that decision to take care of a loved one at home, there is always that question of ‘What’s going to happen?’ How am I going to know?” she said.&nbsp;

"They really come alongside you in that journey," she said, "and help you begin that grieving process. When you know that person is terminal, you begin that grieving process before they are even gone."

I had a real determination that our home would be filled with peace and joy as Don made his final journey home," she said."I would tell them it is one of the final gifts that they can give to their family," Harrison said of other families considering hospice care, "not only to their loved one … but it's a gift that you give to your family that brings you together that allows you to open up conversations."“It’s nice to have someone in a very loving and comfortable way guide you in some of those difficult conversations,” she said.In other people she has dealt with as a funeral director, she has encountered families who don’t want to talk about the fact that someone is dying or the person who is dying doesn’t want to talk about it.“It’s such a healthy process when you can open up about it and talk about it, and you give that loved one permission to visit with you about any concerns they may have and fears they may have, and the opportunity to say goodbye,” Cathy said.&nbsp;“I think hospice gives you that opportunity to say goodbye to your loved one in such a warm and compassionate environment,” she said.<h2>Volunteers</h2>Volunteers can be an integral part of hospice services. Medical training is not required.Volunteers serve as companions to patients and provide respite care and support for families.Sherry Woodside has been a hospice volunteer for nine years. She encountered many hospice staff working in a pharmacy in Phillipsburg and admired their work.&nbsp;When time became available, she decided to become a volunteer.Sherry primarily visits patients in nursing homes. She talks with the patients, although some have memory issues and might not remember her name.“I had one lady who liked to color in adult coloring books, and we colored,” she said. “Everyone is a little different in what they are able to do.”She watches TV with some patients.&nbsp;“I had one lady who really liked to go to the church service they had Sundays at the nursing home in Philipsburg, so I tried to make it a point to try to always be there that week to go with her,” she said.One patient with ALS couldn’t speak anymore, but she loved looking through cookbooks and pointing to her favorite recipes.“It’s just having someone else to talk to, to have an outside voice that’s not a family member,” she said.Sherry said she has found her time as a volunteer rewarding. Families are very appreciative.“The family sends thank you notes, or they say, ‘My mom talked about you a lot,’” she said, her voice beginning to crack. “I counted up the other day, and I think I have had 30 already.”Phyllis Tucker, who is from rural Smith County, said she became a volunteer to pay it forward. Her dad died suddenly, and she wasn't able to be with him. She had seen the positives of hospice when her aunt used the services.She was her aunt's caregiver, but she Phyllis lived three hours away.Hospice staff and volunteers kept Phyllis updated on her aunt's condition when she couldn't be with her.As a volunteer, Phyllis does the same thing for the families she serves.&nbsp;Most of the patients with whom Phyllis works are in nursing homes.&nbsp;“So many folks don’t have local family,” she said.“I go in and visit the patients, and then I text their daughter who lives in Wichita,” she said. “I can be that eyes on.”Often, Phyllis just chats with her patients during visits. She said the patients appreciate seeing someone who chooses to come for visits.“It’s an honor to be with people in those last days of their lives,” she said, “to hear their stories and to get to know them in a different way.”“One patient said, ‘You’re not here because it’s your job. The volunteers come because they want to,'” she said.She said hospice volunteers and staff gave her peace of mind in the last few days of her aunt's life.“Most of us don’t have any experience or training and all of the sudden we are taking care of a person in this stage of life that we’re not familiar with,” Phyllis said.“I was there for her last few days and to have some there who told me I was doing a good job,” she said. “That we were doing it right, the pain medication right, if she didn’t want to eat, we weren’t feeding her, and that was OK,” she said. “The thing that you don’t necessarily have the good instincts for.”She said being a hospice volunteer has been very rewarding, especially in a patient's final moments of life.She called being with someone when they die a mystical moment.&nbsp;“That holiness,” she said.Phyllis urged others to volunteer with hospice. The number of volunteers with NWKareS has dwindled since the pandemic. There are many ways to volunteer. Some volunteers help with paperwork. Some volunteers at HaysMed Hospice Care don't see patients. They bake cookies and help with memorial or bereavement services.The HaysMed Hospice Memorial Service is offered twice yearly, with the upcoming fall memorial service on Oct. 20.
