ROOKS COUNTY – The Rooks County Sheriff’s Department requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue a statewide Silver Alert for a missing Stockton man.

The whereabouts of Robert Lindsey, 89, are unknown, and the public’s assistance is requested to help locate him. Lindsey was last seen leaving his residence at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday August 10. 

Lindsey is believed to be driving a Grey or Silver Chevy Trailblazer with Kansas license plate 640RSJ.

Lindsey is 5 feet 9 inches tall, 185 pounds, gray hair with blue eyes.If you see him, please call dispatch at (785) 425-6312.&nbsp;

LETTER: HaysMed providers say they are committed to care

The Hays City Commission approved two measures Thursday that will enhance growth and redevelopment north of Interstate 70.

The two items involve expansion by Lewis Auto Group in the 4000 block of North Vine.

JTL Leasing (Lewis Auto Group) has purchased two tracts near the intersection of East 41st Street and Sherman Avenue.&nbsp;

Lewis plans to use the existing building at 655 E. 41st St., formerly Vernie’s Toys 4 Trux, as a mechanic/service shop and build a structure in the vacant lot across the street to the west.&nbsp;

The properties are just outside the current city limits.

City commissioners unanimously approved requests to rezone the two tracts from general commercial to light industrial and to annex them into the city.&nbsp;

Both items were previously approved by the Hays Area Planning Commission.

"I think it's a really good opportunity for an existing business to expand close to their other business," Commissioner Sandy Jacobs said.&nbsp; All of these changes are really going to enhance that corridor."

A project change page was added to the draft 2025 budget regarding I-70 Exit 161.

Grow Hays recently received a $4.5 million grant from the state for retail economic development.

"There's been discussions, and 2 million of that will go to the city for the Braun property [infrastructure] construction," said Collin Bielser, Hays deputy city manager.

In 2019, the city purchased 90 acres immediately northeast of the I-70 Exit 161 interchange.

The project will extend utilities and other public infrastructure to the Exit 162 interchange, including internal infrastructure improvements to the city's property.

"This will promote the city's continued growth, readying land for development opportunities," Toby Dougherty, city manager, said Friday.

The design of the infrastructure improvements is expected to begin late this year, with construction starting in 2025.&nbsp;

The project does not impact the city's operational budget. The funding will come from the bond and interest mill levy.

Commissioners also approved Patricia Makings's mayoral appointment to a four–year term on the Hays Housing Authority.

Shaun Musil was absent from the meeting.&nbsp;

Pre-emergence herbicides with residual activity are an important component of high-yielding cropping systems. They are not emphasized as much in wheat production compared to other cropping systems in Kansas, but residual herbicides applied prior to wheat emergence can be part of a good weed management system in wheat, says Sarah Lancaster, K-State Extension Weed Management Specialist. Most residual herbicides labeled for pre-emergence application in wheat are Group 2 (ALS-inhibiting) herbicides, which are associated with herbicide-resistant populations of kochia, marestail (horseweed), bushy wallflower, flixweed, henbit, and brome species in Kansas. Products in Groups 14 (the PPO-inhibiting herbicides) and 15 (the long-chain fatty acid-inhibiting herbicides) are also labeled; however, they are generally more dependent on rainfall for activation than the Group 2 herbicides.

Herbicides to control emerged weeds may be applied with or without residual herbicides in the weeks prior to planting wheat. Older products include the Group 2 herbicides Amber, Olympus, and Pre-Pare, as well as Group 4 (plant growth regulating) herbicides like 2,4-D, dicamba, or fluroxypyr. It is especially important to know planting interval restrictions for Group 4 herbicides, which range from 10 to 45 days.

When selecting pre-emergence herbicides for use in wheat production, keep in mind that many of these products are also labeled for use in emerged wheat. Unless using a planned split application, avoid repeated use of products from the same herbicide group to slow the development of herbicide-resistant weed populations in your fields.

Field bindweed can be difficult to control

Field bindweed is a particularly troublesome weed to control. In a 12-year experiment conducted at the Agricultural Research Center - Hays, field bindweed reduced wheat yield by 2 to 50%. Management of this weed during wheat establishment is important because field bindweed continues to grow until temperatures drop below 20°F.

The herbicides most commonly recommended for field bindweed control include various formulations of 2,4-D, dicamba, and glyphosate. Dicamba tends to provide greater control for fall applications compared to 2,4-D or glyphosate, especially if plants are drought-stressed. Another commonly used product is Facet (quinclorac). It is most effective when applied just

before the first killing frost. Other herbicides that are labeled for fall application to control or suppress field bindweed in wheat include Affinity, Aim, and Cimarron.

A single herbicide application will not achieve satisfactory control of field bindweed. It will take multiple years of herbicide applications to deplete the energy stored in the root system and control an established infestation.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. Advisories are&nbsp;Lifted&nbsp;when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. has been named the new Principal at Ellis Jr./Sr. High School.

In a post on the USD388 school website Vincent said, “I'm a graduate of Abilene High School and got my bachelor's
from Sterling College in physical education and health. This is my 11th year in administration. My
daughter teaches fourth grade in Grinnell, and my two boys attend Colorado State
University and are both on the football team.

All but four years of my career in

Ellis announces Vincent as new high school principal

Event organizers are well aware of the impact that speakers have for those attending their particular conference.

That’s why the committee for the upcoming Eucharistic Conference in Hays chose an A-list of speakers for the conference, which promises to deepen attendees’ understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.

The list of speakers is headlined by a dynamic young bishop and other popular clergy members from around the diocese and beyond.

The conference, sponsored by Fort Hays State University’s Comeau Catholic Campus Center, is scheduled for Aug. 9-10 on the FHSU campus.

Bishop Joseph Espaillat, at 47 years of age the youngest bishop in the United States, will serve as the keynote speaker twice—on Friday night’s opening session and again on Saturday morning.

Attendees will even have a third time to hear from Bishop Joseph as he will be the homilist for Saturday’s outdoor Mass set for 5:15 p.m. on the FHSU Quad.

One Hays woman was so invigorated with Bishop Joseph’s homily at the closing Mass of the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, last fall that she jumped at the chance for all her children to hear him.

Brenda Rose, who attended the NCYC with her oldest daughter, Hannah, will be attending a cousin’s wedding in Nebraska on Saturday.

When she learned that Bishop Joseph would be she signed up her entire family for Friday evening’s sessions at the Eucharistic Conference.

“I remember watching Bishop Joseph throughout Eucharistic Adoration at NCYC, and I had never seen a priest or bishop who came so alive as he led us in adoration. His energy was contagious,” Rose said. “We didn’t learn until later that he was a bishop, and we were captivated by him during his homily. It was like he was one us, speaking directly to us and telling us exactly what all of us as Catholics need to hear.”

Several clergy and parishioners from the Salina Diocese are attending this weekend’s National Eucharist Congress in Indianapolis, the first of its kind in 83 years.

Bill Meagher, director of youth ministry, religious education and family life for the Salina Diocese, said Bishop Gerald Vincke wanted to host a conference closer to home, so soon after they returned from NCYC, plans began for making that happen. And Bishop Gerald quickly added Bishop Joseph to the list of speakers.

Father Andy Hammeke, pastor of FHSU’s Catholic Campus Center and co-vocational director for the Salina Diocese, also had a desire to bring an opportunity like this to FHSU students.

“We are really grateful for Fr. Andy and the Fort Hays students for opening up this conference to everyone in the diocese,” Meagher said.

Fr. Andy said that the bishops of the United States “decided to put on the event (in Indianapolis) in an effort to bolster Eucharistic Devotion in our country.”

“Not everybody in our diocese was able to attend, so we are honored to host our own Eucharistic Conference on the campus of Fort Hays State University,” Fr. Andy said. “We hope this will be an opportunity for people from all over Kansas and the surrounding states to increase their devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist.”

The conference will begin with registration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Hall, followed by the opening session featuring Bishop Joseph in Sheridan’s Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The evening will conclude with Adoration Under the Stars in the FHSU Quad. The next morning will feature another outdoor session with a 7 a.m. rosary at the grotto on the campus of Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School.

Following Bishop Joseph’s keynote session at 8:45, a variety of breakout sessions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will cover topics such as Eucharist Adoration, understanding young people and leadership for teens, and our call to serve.

Bishop Vincke and Meagher want to point out that attending even parts of the conference will have an impact.

 </figure>By DIANE GASPER-O’BRIEN Catholic Diocese of SalinaEvent organizers are well aware of the impact that speakers have for those attending their particular conference.That’s why the committee for the upcoming Eucharistic Conference in Hays chose an A-list of speakers for the conference, which promises to deepen attendees’ understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.The list of speakers is headlined by a dynamic young bishop and other popular clergy members from around the diocese and beyond.The conference, sponsored by Fort Hays State University’s Comeau Catholic Campus Center, is scheduled for Aug. 9-10 on the FHSU campus.Bishop Joseph Espaillat, at 47 years of age the youngest bishop in the United States, will serve as the keynote speaker twice—on Friday night’s opening session and again on Saturday morning.Attendees will even have a third time to hear from Bishop Joseph as he will be the homilist for Saturday’s outdoor Mass set for 5:15 p.m. on the FHSU Quad.One Hays woman was so invigorated with Bishop Joseph’s homily at the closing Mass of the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, last fall that she jumped at the chance for all her children to hear him.<figure>

 </figure>Brenda Rose, who attended the NCYC with her oldest daughter, Hannah, will be attending a cousin’s wedding in Nebraska on Saturday.When she learned that Bishop Joseph would be she signed up her entire family for Friday evening’s sessions at the Eucharistic Conference.“I remember watching Bishop Joseph throughout Eucharistic Adoration at NCYC, and I had never seen a priest or bishop who came so alive as he led us in adoration. His energy was contagious,” Rose said. “We didn’t learn until later that he was a bishop, and we were captivated by him during his homily. It was like he was one us, speaking directly to us and telling us exactly what all of us as Catholics need to hear.”Several clergy and parishioners from the Salina Diocese are attending this weekend’s National Eucharist Congress in Indianapolis, the first of its kind in 83 years.Bill Meagher, director of youth ministry, religious education and family life for the Salina Diocese, said Bishop Gerald Vincke wanted to host a conference closer to home, so soon after they returned from NCYC, plans began for making that happen. And Bishop Gerald quickly added Bishop Joseph to the list of speakers.Father Andy Hammeke, pastor of FHSU’s Catholic Campus Center and co-vocational director for the Salina Diocese, also had a desire to bring an opportunity like this to FHSU students.“We are really grateful for Fr. Eucharistic Conference coming to Hays this weekend

Vietnam War veteran Pat Martin of rural Hays was just 19 years old on May 24, 1970, when he was shot in the back during what's become known as one of the war's most historic and decorated helicopter rescue missions, "The Battle of Medevac Meadows."

He's writing a book about his experience as an air ambulance Medevac crew chief with the 1st Cavalry Division on the flight that was downed under enemy fire during a rescue mission in southeast Cambodia.&nbsp;

"We took a mission to try to evacuate several South Vietnamese airborne brigade soldiers who were trying to locate an enemy bunker complex in the Fishhook region of Cambodia," Martin said in a Hays Post interview.&nbsp;

Their helicopter was shot out of the air and crashed heavily on its right side, killing the door gunner.&nbsp;

Martin started laying gunfire into the tree line and was shot.&nbsp;

"It was dark when I woke up. ... One of the most horrific events in my whole life. Me and God became very friendly right there," he said.

"We ended spending up almost two days on the ground trying to get us evacuated out of there," Martin said.

"When the smoke cleared, there was one Medal of Honor awarded, seven or eight Silver Stars, a few Distinguished Flying Crosses, air medals, and so forth."

Martin was awarded the Purple Heart for that day he was shot 54 years ago.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military award in the United States, established by General George Washington in 1782 to recognize heroic acts by his troops during the American Revolution.

Today, the <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/story/Article/1650949/the-purple-heart-americas-oldest-medal/">Purple Heart</a> is awarded to service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.&nbsp;

The 73-year-old Martin is now commander of Hays' Disabled American Veterans Post #18.

He found out last month he is the "last man standing"—the last person alive—from that mission's crew of six that was shot down.

"That kind of shook me up a little bit, and I decided it was time to write my memoirs of what went on," Martin said.

Martin hopes to sell copies of his book "May Flowers" when it's finished and donate the proceeds to local veterans and their families.

Martin presided over a public ceremony Wednesday afternoon in Veterans Memorial Park, 15th and Haney, designating Hays a Purple Heart City.

The event included a ribbon cutting by The Chamber in Hays and a mayoral proclamation read by Sandy Jacobs, vice-mayor.&nbsp;

"We appreciate the sacrifices our Purple Heart recipients have made in defending our freedom and believe it is important that we acknowledge them for their courage and show them the support they have earned,"&nbsp; Jacobs read from the proclamation signed by Mayor Shaun Musil.&nbsp;

"As a veteran, it makes us proud that our community would get behind a designation such as this," DAV Post #18 Chaplain Mike Chappell told Hays Post.&nbsp;

"There are so many more who are injured in these conflicts than were killed. ... They often go unrecognized, walking around and people don't even know it. When they come into town, they'll know it's for them. People may not know them by name but the community affords them respect," Chappell said.

Several Purple Heart recipients were in the crowd at the designation ceremony along with many more military veterans.&nbsp;

The Purple Heart City designation was sought by the six veterans service organizations in Hays — VFW, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America, Marine Corps, Disabled American Veterans, and Society of 40 Men and 8 Horses.&nbsp;

Official Purple Heart City signs will soon be placed by the city at six locations marking main entrances into Hays.

The coalition of local veterans organizations is paying for the cost of the signs and upkeep.

Research by Martin shows 48 Ellis County residents have been killed in action since World War I.

The tally includes Hays natives Bryan Nichols and Dave Carter, who died 13 years ago on August 6, 2011, while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Divine Mercy Radio to celebrate 14th Annual Appreciation Banquet

What do thrift store donations teach us about race? The traveling exhibit,&nbsp;Sorting Out Race, currently at the Hays Public Library explores that concept to generate discussions about racial stereotypes past and present.

The exhibition created by the Kaufman Museum at Bethel College includes vintage and contemporary objects readily found in thrift stores that include depictions of race and ethnicity. Through a series of interactives and guided discussions, visitors to the exhibit can consider whether these items should remain in circulation or “sorted out” from the retail environment.

A reception will be held August 27th&nbsp;at 5:30 p.m. at The Fox Theatre. Dr. Alex Red Corn will present&nbsp;Which Box Should I Check?: American Indians, Stereotypes, Imagery, and Educational Systems.&nbsp;Following his discussion, attendees are invited to move to the library to view the exhibit. The reception is free and open to the public.

The traveling exhibit,&nbsp;Sorting Out Race, currently at the Hays Public Library explores that concept to generate discussions about racial stereotypes past and present.The exhibition created by the Kaufman Museum at Bethel College includes vintage and contemporary objects readily found in thrift stores that include depictions of race and ethnicity. Through a series of interactives and guided discussions, visitors to the exhibit can consider whether these items should remain in circulation or “sorted out” from the retail environment.A reception will be held August 27th&nbsp;at 5:30 p.m. at The Fox Theatre. Dr. Alex Red Corn will present&nbsp;Which Box Should I Check?: American Indians, Stereotypes, Imagery, and Educational Systems.&nbsp;Following his discussion, attendees are invited to move to the library to view the exhibit. It is an election year and yard signs are beginning to appear. The one I see most along my route around town says LET US VOTE AT FHSU.

My first impression was that the folks at FHSU could not vote. A Google search informed me that was not it at all.

It was not about whether you could vote at FHSU. It was about where you could vote.

 If you are a registered voter in Ellis County, you vote in the precinct assigned to your permanent address. There are five precincts within the city of Hays.

They are located strategically to give all voters equal access to vote. There is no precinct location that requires a voter to travel more than 2 miles to vote in Hays.

Each voting location needs to have plenty of parking and is ADA accessible.  Finding locations that meet those requirements is not easy. 

Our community steps forward when asked. Precinct polls are in Sternberg Museum, Hays Recreation Center, the VFW Hall, Messiah Lutheran Church and the Smokey Hill Country Club.

All provide convenient and accessible places to cast a ballot. It seems to me that the question about where to vote is not one of need but one of convenience.

We live in a country where voting is a right and a privilege. We are a country where the people decide how and by whom we are governed. If we do not vote, we give up our voice.  

The yard signs and the energy behind them would be better used if they said. 

GET OUT AND VOTE, our Democracy depends on it.

A lack of contested races is being blamed for the low voter
turnout in Tuesday’s Ellis County primary election.

According to the Ellis County Clerk Bobbi Dreiling, the
unofficial voter turnout was 8.9%.

unofficial voter turnout was 8.9%. Only 1,782 ballots were cast out of the more than 19,900 registered voters in Ellis County. About 20 provisional ballots will be reviewed as part of the canvass later this month.“There were no contested races other than on the Republican ballot. The U.S. House of Representatives did have a contested race. There was a
township contested race. Other than that, everybody else was going unopposed
and will move forward onto the general,” Dreiling said. “So, I contribute that
to a low voter turnout.”In the 2022 primary, voter turnout was almost 50%, with more
than 9,600 ballots cast. But the ballot also contained the proposed state
constitutional amendment&nbsp;regarding the right to abortion.Between 2010 and 2020, voter turnout in Ellis County ranged between
37.9% in 2020 and 17.6 in 2014. The average voter turnout over those six primary
elections was 25.25% in Ellis County.Dreiling said there were more contested races in past
years' primary elections than this year.Counties across the state also appeared to suffer low voter
turnout.In 2024, voter turnout in Ford County was 8.2%, Sedgwick County 9.9%, Saline County 16.5% and Barton County 20%.Dreiling said her office will continue to offer expanded voter
access, including a second Saturday when the election office is open for
advanced voting. Only 10 people cast an advanced ballot on Saturday for the Presidential Preference Primary, and 12 voters cast a ballot in advance on Saturday for this primary.
Dreiling said they will continue offering a Saturday advance
voting opportunity in the future, and she hopes it will catch on.“That’s my hope, that if I keep on advertising it and
letting people know that Saturday is available for them, hopefully, that will also drive my Fort Hays State students to come vote on Saturdays as
well,” Dreiling said. The election canvass will be on Aug. 19.
