Hays Police Department activity log: May 18-24, 2025

WILSON—After 37 years of being a quirky stop on Interstate 70 where you can find popcorn, wine, Kansas books, T-shirts or handpainted limestone, Kansas Originals is facing closure.

Kansas Originals owns its building, but not the land on which it sits. The land was owned by Service Oil Company, but has been purchased by a new owner. The new owner has decided to develop the location as a truck stop and is insisting that the Kansas Originals building be demolished or moved.

Although the store could be relocated, Marge Lawson, co-founder of the nonprofit that created Kansas Originals, said the store is doomed without easy access to I-70.

"Through tumultuous months, with serveral owners, and waiting for two years through a maze of what might be and assurances from local agencies that we are safe, we received legal notice that we must move out and move or tear our building down by Nov. 30 of this year," Kansas Originals said in a letter to the Hays Post.

The letter continued, "It is heartbreaking and unimaginable because we didn't just buy this place and business, we built it with years of total dedication—no 40-hour weeks but 50 and 60 hours, late nights and weekends. We served our artists, craftsmen, travelers and the general public by staying open 362 days a year."

Kansas Originals is not your average souvenir shop off the interstate. It's not kich.

The Post Rock Opportunities Foundation, which is the nonprofit that supports Kansas Originals, shared the history behind the trading post on the Plains.

Thirty-seven years ago, a dedicated group of people from five counties banded together and formed the Post Rock Opportunities Foundation. 

"Led by a pastor who wouldn't give up, and movers and shakers from throughout the area working countless hours, Kansas Originals Market &amp; Gallery became a reality," the letter said. "Our mission is to provide marketplaces for the work of Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers, especially those who are 62 or over, low-income, disabled, minorities or women in business."

The Presbyterian Church provided a $50,000 grant from its One Great House of Sharing to construct the building. Other donors and volunteers followed the church's lead.

Kansas Originals opened on July 27, 1991, during the Wilson Czech Festival.

By 1993, the building was full. The foundation used a grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and a loan from the Northcentral Regional Planning Commission to double the size of the building.

According to the foundation, more than 1,000 corporations, businesses, and individuals have supported the nonprofit through grants, sponsorships and monetary donations.

"Our artists and craftsmen donate to the cause by giving artwork for fundraisers," the letter said.

The Smoky Hill Foundation, Merrill Foundation, Kansas Arts Commission and Dane G. Hansen Foundation are among the Kansas Originals' supporters.

"It was because of the selfless acts of so many who put us before their interests that we were able to succeed. Kansas Originals Market &amp; Gallery and the Post Rock Opportunties Foundation were never created to make any one person or group of people wealthy, it was created to sustain a group of people that would not have had the opportunity for success that Kansas Originals provided," the letter said.

Kansas Originals has been a point of curiosity for people from around the world. A map at the store is packed with push pins marking the homes of visitors from all 50 states and more than 50 countries.

Volunteers says visitors love to take photos with the "The Wizard of Oz" characters and Rusty Rojo, the Orginals' 7-foot chicken.

"The foundation has showcased the work of over 1,960 artists, craftsmen, food producers and authors. It has been our pride and our joy and our honor to serve the talented Kansans and to enable them to have their art, crafts and food products spread across the United States from our spot on the prairie," the letter said.

Some of the Hays area products that have been featured in the store include Popt Popcorn from Hays, Pat's Beef Jerky from Liebenthal, and Patsy's D's Barbecue Sauce from Russell.

One of the most dedicated artists and devoted representatives has been a part of the foundation since it was organized. She served on the board of directors and still brings in paintings and photo albums to sell. She will be 99 in August.

"A comment by the son of one of our many elderly craftspeople, who stopped by the other day to pick up her remaining items after she passed away, tugged at my heart when he told us, 'You gave her a purpose in life. She had a place to come, and she loved coming here,'" the letter said.

The foundation also wanted to honor the memory of Pastor Tom Henstock, who worked tirelessly to keep the dream of Kansas Originals alive and made a significant financial donation upon his passing.

"We were so excited that we were going to be able to make improvements to our building, but instead our future has become uncertain and bleak," the letter said.

The Kansas Originals volunteers fear the sale of the property on which their building sits means the end of the store.

"Without a miracle or intervention from people who care, our dedicated staff will lose their employment," the letter said. "The attractions and businesses in Wilson and Lucas and throughout the region that we so vigorously promote to our millions of travelers will no longer receive that support, and many of our Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers will no longer have a place to sell their work.

"The Tourist Information Center and Kansas Wine Room will be gone. All the history, creating income for the elderly, low-income, disabled and women in business, is scheduled to come to a crashing end."

"We don't want our story to end. We welcome any suggestions, ideas or solutions anyone might have to keep the Post Rock Opportunites and Kansas Originals alive and thriving," the Kansas Originals volunteers and staff said in their letter.

Kansas Originals faces demolition of its building, fears closure

HaysMed proudly announces the successful completion of its first Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) procedure, performed on May 14, 2025, by Dr. Jacob Morgan, electrophysiologist and cardiologist, in collaboration with the HaysMed Catheterization Laboratory team.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in cardiac care for the region, as HaysMed becomes one of the first facilities in western Kansas to utilize the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System- a newly FDA-approved technology for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

PFA represents a next-generation approach to cardiac ablation. Unlike traditional thermal ablation methods that use extreme heat or cold to destroy problematic heart tissue, the FARAPULSE system employs non-thermal, tissue-selective electric fields. This innovation minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding structures while maintaining high efficacy in treating AFib.

“Patients are increasingly aware of new treatment options like PFA,” said Dr. Morgan. “We are pleased to offer this cutting-edge technology to our community. The incidence of atrial fibrillation continues to rise, and having access to safer, faster, and more effective therapies allows us to improve outcomes and expand care to more patients.”

According to Boston Scientific, the FARAPULSE PFA System has demonstrated comparable effectiveness to traditional radiofrequency ablation, with added benefits of reduced procedure time and enhanced safety. The system has been used successfully worldwide and is now available in the U.S. following regulatory approval.

“Introducing this technology at HaysMed is a major step forward for cardiac care in our region,” Dr. Morgan added. “We are excited to bring this innovation to patients in Hays and across western Kansas.”

Most experts in the early childhood field recommend no screen time for children under two years old. The only screen time that would be beneficial for a young child might include video chatting with important people in their lives. 

Screen time can affect children in many ways from developmental, behaviorally, and their physical health. Screen time often gets replaced by things that are important for children to experience. 

Just 10 Minutes is an initiative aimed at helping combat the effect of screen time in our lives and our relationships.

JustTenMinutes.org is a nonprofit initiative dedicated to helping families strengthen their relationships through daily, intentional, screen-free moments. The organization encourages parents and caregivers to set aside just 10 minutes each day for focused, undistracted connection with their children. These brief interactions—such as reading together, drawing, or sharing a favorite memory—are designed to nurture emotional growth, support brain development, and create lasting memories.

The initiative emphasizes the power of small, consistent actions. It provides research-backed insights into how short, meaningful interactions can have a profound impact on a child's development and a family's well-being. The organization also offers resources and activity ideas to help families make the most of their 10-minute connections.

JustTenMinutes.org collaborates with various partners, including healthcare organizations and community groups, to promote its message and expand its reach. Community partners such as Advent Health Kansas City Foundation, Kansas Head Start Association (KHSA), Kansas Parents as Teachers Association (KPATA) and Sing Play Love indicate a broad network of support for its mission.

Kansas-based nonprofit promotes family connection through just 10 minutes a day

I work at Hays Regional Airport, and I’m proud of it. But I’m also deeply concerned because the federal funding that keeps our airport operational is under threat, and not enough people are talking about it.

Small airports like ours are often taken for granted by those in power. They’re dismissed as luxuries or “non-essential” in the grand scheme of federal spending. That’s a dangerous and misguided view. Hays Regional Airport is not a luxury, it is an essential infrastructure. Its existence supports commercial air service, emergency medical flights, mail and cargo delivery, and economic activity across our region. It provides so much more than people realize and is a staple for the community to work.&nbsp;

Federal funding doesn’t just keep the lights on. It pays for critical infrastructure upkeep, runway repairs, snow and ice removal, safety, and communications systems. It ensures we have trained staff and emergency preparedness. Most importantly, it keeps the Essential Air Service (EAS) program running, which is the only reason we have regular commercial flights in and out of Hays. Without EAS funding, our airport would likely lose its airline service altogether, cutting us off from the rest of the country. Cutting jobs and putting livelihoods, including mine, at risk.&nbsp;

This isn’t just about convenience. If we lose flights in Hays, it means longer drives for medical appointments, fewer options for students and professionals traveling for school and work, and real consequences for local businesses that rely on air connections. It means losing jobs, not just at the airport, but in all the industries that benefit from it. The hospital and the college rely on our air services.

It also sends a message that rural communities like Hays don’t matter.

We’ve seen time and again how rural Kansas gets overlooked by policymakers until it’s time to campaign. We hear a lot about “supporting rural America,” but when push comes to shove, too many of our leaders are silent when federal support is pulled away from critical services in towns like ours. That silence speaks volumes. Are we great again yet? No, because this isn't about helping small rural America be great.&nbsp;

Let me be clear. Defunding our airport is not a budget cut. It’s a betrayal.

If you care about Hays and the future of our region, I urge you to speak up! Call your representatives. Write letters and emails. Demand answers. Our airport is too important to let it quietly disappear under the weight of political indifference.

We deserve better. Hays deserves better. And it’s time we all made that known loud and clear!&nbsp;

But I’m also deeply concerned because the federal funding that keeps our airport operational is under threat, and not enough people are talking about it.Small airports like ours are often taken for granted by those in power. They’re dismissed as luxuries or “non-essential” in the grand scheme of federal spending. That’s a dangerous and misguided view. Hays Regional Airport is not a luxury, it is an essential infrastructure. Its existence supports commercial air service, emergency medical flights, mail and cargo delivery, and economic activity across our region. It provides so much more than people realize and is a staple for the community to work.&nbsp;Federal funding doesn’t just keep the lights on. It pays for critical infrastructure upkeep, runway repairs, snow and ice removal, safety, and communications systems. It ensures we have trained staff and emergency preparedness. Most importantly, it keeps the Essential Air Service (EAS) program running, which is the only reason we have regular commercial flights in and out of Hays. Without EAS funding, our airport would likely lose its airline service altogether, cutting us off from the rest of the country. Cutting jobs and putting livelihoods, including mine, at risk.&nbsp;This isn’t just about convenience. If we lose flights in Hays, it means longer drives for medical appointments, fewer options for students and professionals traveling for school and work, and real consequences for local businesses that rely on air connections. It means losing jobs, not just at the airport, but in all the industries that benefit from it. The hospital and the college rely on our air services.It also sends a message that rural communities like Hays don’t matter.We’ve seen time and again how rural Kansas gets overlooked by policymakers until it’s time to campaign. We hear a lot about “supporting rural America,” but when push comes to shove, too many of our leaders are silent when federal support is pulled away from critical services in towns like ours. That silence speaks volumes. Are we great again yet? No, because this isn't about helping small rural America be great.&nbsp;Let me be clear. Defunding our airport is not a budget cut. It’s a betrayal.If you care about Hays and the future of our region, I urge you to speak up! Call your representatives. Write letters and emails. Demand answers. Our airport is too important to let it quietly disappear under the weight of political indifference.We deserve better. Hays deserves better. The Animal Hospital at the Crossroads in Phillipsburg and in Plainville stopped offering general appointments and large animal services on May 9 and 23.

Emergency services at both clinics ended on May 5, according to a Facebook post by The Animal Hospital.

Dr. Lauren Mack will step back from full-time practice and provide only limited, consultative services going forward. The clinics are for sale to new owners.

Mack said in the social media post that it is time to prioritize family as veterinary challenges continue in the region.

"The demand of veterinary practice in a rural area is all-consuming and although I have taken great pride in this journey, it is simply not sustainable," Mack said.

Taco Riendo announces closure

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes drops to its lowest total in more than three years. The weekly U.S. tally is down eight oil rigs and two gas rigs for a total of 566, the lowest total since November, 2021. The report shows a drop of nine horizontal rigs. Texas is down five.&nbsp; Oklahoma, New Mexico and North Dakota are each down two rigs.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is up one in eastern Kansas at eight rigs, and down two west of Wichita at eleven active rigs. The tally is down 21 percent from a month ago and 41 percent from a year ago. Drilling was underway Friday on two leases in Finney County.

Kansas operators completed 17 new wells last week, with eight in eastern Kansas and nine west of Wichita, including one in Finney County. Independent Oil Gas Service reports 485 new well-completions so far this year, compared to 512 a year ago.

Regulators in The Sunflower State okayed eight new drilling locations statewide. There are two new permits east of Wichita, and six in Western Kansas, including two in Ellis County and one in Barton County. That's 271 so far this year, compared to 377 last year at this time.

Three years ago, the United States sold some 300 million barrels from crude oil from our strategic reserves, in an effort to tame oil prices. Today, prices are $35 per barrel cheaper, and our refill savings are approaching one BILLION dollars.&nbsp; The Energy Department added 800,000 barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserves last week, raising the total over 400 million barrels (down from over 600 million at its peak). The government has refilled 36.5 million barrels since last April. Current prices are more than $30 less than what we received selling those barrels.

Domestic crude inventories rose more than a million barrels to just over 443 million, as of May 16. The government reports stockpiles are about six percent below the five-year seasonal average.

US crude production rose slightly last week but remains below 13.4 million barrels a day for a second week. The Energy Information Administration reports average output of just over 13.39 million barrels per day, up five million daily barrels from a week ago.

Crude imports outpaced exports by two and a half million barrels a day in the week through May 16. Both are up for the week but down from a year ago. The Energy Information Administration reports just over six million barrels a day in crude imports, up 200,000 barrels a day from last week, but down more than 600,000 barrels a day from the same week last year. Crude exports averaged a little over 3.5 million barrels a day, up slightly from last week, but down 1.2 million daily barrels from a year ago. Compared to last year at this time, the four-week average imports are down 13% or nearly a million daily barrels. The four week average is down 600,000 barrels a day from a year ago, or about two percent.

Texas regulators now say oil-and-gas drillers must demonstrate that the wastewater they're producing and then injecting back into the ground is staying where they inject it. The Railroad Commission of Texas, the state's oil and gas regulator, is now acknowledging the continued and growing demand for underground saltwater disposal capacity in the prolific Permian Basin. Last week they also noted the physical limitations of the basin's disposal reservoirs. Operators must now prove in advance that the proposed injection zone is up to the task of retaining waste, and that other wells within a two-mile area won't cause problems.

It's getting expensive for operators in Colorado who continue to violate a new energy reporting law. A new probe shows 20 oil and gas companies in Colorado have failed to report the chemicals they used in drilling and fracking operations as required by the law. No one disputes the findings. The law allows the state to fine oil and gas companies $200 a day for failure to report those chemicals yet no one is explaining why upwards of $37 Million in fines have not been collected. Local media assert the government has not collected any fines or penalties for noncompliance.

Canada's only east-west oil pipeline is completing it's first year since the government expansion that tripled its capacity. The lion's share of that extra crude is going to China. About 90% of the crude oil produced in Canada, about four million barrels a day, winds up in the United States from pipelines moving oil from north to south. The Trans Mountain Pipeline moves oil west from the oil fields of western Canada to the Pacific Coast. The pipeline can move 890,000 barrels a day at full capacity. Since last May, Canada shipped about 207,000 barrels per day of Trans-Mountain crude to China. US operators took about 173,000 barrels a day. The Canadian government expects the pipeline to reach 84% capacity this year, and 92% next year.

Iraq says it welcomes new oil deals with the US in the disputed Kurdistan region, but says those deals must go through Iraq's federal government. Baghdad says two huge new US deals in the semi-autonomous region violate Iraq's constitution. Kurdistan's government signed and announced the deals last week. The two agreements are worth a combined $110 BILLION, and involve about five trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 900 million barrels of recoverable oil.

The world's fastest-growing economy is also among the largest importers of crude oil. Increasing Russia sanctions, and US tariffs, are moving a lot of that business our way.&nbsp; India's energy minister says they are ready to increase oil imports from the United States. India has been buying a lot of oil from Russia lately, despite ongoing international pressure. Minister Singh Puri says pricing and availability, and not ideology, will drive his energy decisions. But he did acknowledge increasing US imports would ease the Trump Administration's tariff and trade deficit concerns. India has the world's fastest growing major economy, annual energy needs topping $150 BILLION, and had a US trade deficit of well over $45 billion last year.

Sen. Roger Marshall sought to increase awareness of the farmer mental health crisis during a media call on Thursday.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Marshall said it was a good time to shed light on many of the obstacles U.S. farmers face that can take a toll on their mental health.

"We lose a farmer every day to suicide," Marshall said. "We lose more farmers to suicide than to farm accidents.

"Our whole lives, I'm a fifth-generation farm kid, we are taught farm safety. Don't stand behind a tractor. Don't stand behind a horse. But we were never taught anything about mental health."

Marshall said farmers are seeing a record drop in farm income, he asserted, because of the policies of the Biden administration.&nbsp;

Input costs, such as the cost of fuel as well as the interest rates, have hurt the farmers' bottom lines, Marshall said.

"They have this huge financial stress. Throw on top of that dealing with the Kansas weather, it's a big, big burden that Kansas and all farmers feel," he said.&nbsp;

Many small farms have been in the family for generations, and families are in danger of losing their farms, Marshall said.

"Because of all these things, we're seeing a big surge in farmer suicide," he said.

Marshall urged farmers or family members dealing with mental health issues to call or text the national crisis hotline at 988.

Marshall said he thought the 988 system is working. He said he has visited some 988 call centers and said he thought the system has adequate staff for those services.

Marshall, who is a medical doctor, said to look for signs and symptoms of depression in friends and family members, including trouble sleeping or eating.

Look for people who have withdrawn from social events like going to church or attending local sporting events, he said.

"Be a good neighbor," he said. "Reach out to that person. Sit down with that person. If it's an emergency, call 988. If not, maybe just invite them back to church, take them out for coffee, or say, 'Let's go talk to your family doctor or someone at one of the local mental health centers.'

"There are resources out there. You're not alone."

"It's a very stressful time," Marshall said. "Farmers are very proud, but it's very understandable. The stress is real. It's not in your head. The stress is absolutely real, and we're here to help you."

High Plains Mental Health Center is a&nbsp;Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, and Marshall said he will continue to fight for funding for those centers.

Medicare and Medicaid provide funding for mental health care for both low-income elderly and those on disability.

 "We are not touching Medicare," Marshall said. "On the Medicaid side of things, we are fighting to strengthen it for those people who need it the most."

Marshall said most of the work on Medicaid will affect states that have expanded Medicaid, which Kansas has not.

"I can't emphasize enough that we are protecting Medicaid for seniors. Forty percent of the seniors in nursing homes are on Medicare and Medicaid. The same would be true for those people with disabilities. We will also do everything we can to protect children as well," Marshall said.

"But I don't think it's right for Kansans to be paying for Medicaid for illegal aliens, and then there's a whole slew of people who are on Medicaid fraudulently. They're enrolled in Medicaid and on food stamps in two different states at the same time and taking advantage of it," he said.

"There is no one up here working harder than me to preserve Medicaid for those people who need it the most," Marshall said.

Marshall was asked about economic development and Farm Service Agency funds that were frozen by the executive branch.&nbsp;

Marshall lauded $500 million in emergency commodity assistance that was distributed this year to Kansas farmers. The funds were meant to ease the pain of high input prices and low commodity prices because of the tariffs.

He said the United States Department of Agriculture put a pause on those programs to deal with fraud, waste and abuse.

"I think it is a work in progress," Marshall said. "We want as much of the money that was allocated for this to get to the farmers, so there are not middle men or it gets stuck up here in Washington."

He said the federal processes are way too complicated and hopes to see more USDA and FSA personnel back in the states and working with farmers on the front lines.

He did not say when the USDA and FSA funds would be released.

Kansas earns ‘D’ on March of Dimes Report Card

MANHATTAN – A Kansas State University extension agent is hailing the success of a pair of programs that have helped to address a high rate of preterm births in the state.

 </figure><h2>Kansas earns ‘D’ on March of Dimes Report Card</h2>By&nbsp;<a href="mailto:melgares@ksu.edu" target="_blank">PAT MELGARES </a><a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news-and-publications/news/stories/2025/05/health-preterm-births-in-kansas.html">K-State Research and Extension News Service&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>MANHATTAN – A Kansas State University extension agent is hailing the success of a pair of programs that have helped to address a high rate of preterm births in the state.Monique Koerner, a family community wellness agent in K-State Research and Extension’s Cottonwood District, called the state’s preterm birth rate “concerning.”“The chronic conditions that many in our state face is concerning,” she said. “But there are a lot of ways that we can help improve the health of our maternal child health population.”In its 2024 Report Card highlighting the collective factors that contribute to maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in the United States, the March of Dimes called the nation’s preterm birth rate “alarmingly high.”The report notes that in 2023, more than 370,000 babies were born preterm, about 10.4% of all births. Kansas was one of 15 states that earned a ‘D’ on the report card, with 10.5% of all births considered preterm.The March of Dimes’ report notes that chronic health conditions caused by smoking, hypertension, unhealthy weight and diabetes contribute to high rates of preterm births in Kansas.Koerner has recently introduced a prenatal education program called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/577/Becoming-a-Mom">Becoming a Mom</a>&nbsp;to help expectant mothers with support and guidance. The free classes are available in several of the state’s counties currently, and are supported by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Perinatal Community Collaboratives, and the March of Dimes.The six-week, prenatal education class – one session per week – is available to expectant mothers and their “support people,” according to Koerner.“We’ve had several dads come to our classes, as well,” she said. “Really, anybody that is there to support the mom is welcome, because we want them to get the education, too.”The classes cover such topics as an overview of pregnancy, health, nutrition, exercise, stress, labor and delivery, infant feeding, infant care (including safe sleep and car seats), family planning, mental health and more.“We also invite people from the local community to come in and talk with the participants,” Koerner said. “One of my goals for this class was to break down the barriers that might exist in the community. If people have names and faces and have met people, it will be easier to reach out to those resources when they need them.”Koerner also helped to establish an event called a Community Baby Shower in Ellis County in April, which drew 42 participants.“We’re going to have to have a bigger venue next year because I think this is just going to grow,” she said.The event provided education for infant care, and those who completed Safe Sleep instruction received a free portable crib, and other giveaways.
