Ellis County students earn degrees from Cloud County Community College

June is the time to fertilize warm-season lawn grasses such as bermudagrass, buffalograss and zoysiagrass. These species all thrive in warmer summer weather, so this is the time they respond best to fertilization. The most important nutrient is nitrogen (N), and these three species need it in varying amounts.

Bermudagrass requires the most nitrogen. Bermudagrass used on athletic fields needs about 4 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season. High-quality home lawns are often given 3 pounds per 1000 square feet and low maintenance areas can get by on 2 lbs.. Apply this as separate applications, about 4 weeks apart consisting of 1 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. starting in early May for athletic fields. It is already too late for the May application, but the June application is just around the corner. The nitrogen can come from either a quick- or slow-release source. So any lawn fertilizer will work. Plan the last application for no later than August 15. This helps ensure the bermudagrass is not overstimulated, making it susceptible to winter-kill.

Zoysiagrass grows more slowly than bermudagrass and is prone to develop thatch. Consequently, it does not need as much nitrogen. In fact, too much is worse than too little. One and one-half to 2 pounds N per 1,000 sq. ft. during the season is sufficient. Split the total in two and apply once in early June and again around mid-July. Slow-release nitrogen is preferable but quick-release is acceptable. Slow-release nitrogen is sometimes listed as "slowly available" or "water insoluble."

Buffalograss requires the least nitrogen of all lawn species commonly grown in Kansas. It will survive and persist with no supplemental nitrogen, but giving it one lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. will improve color and density. This application should be made in early June. For a little darker color, fertilize it as described for zoysiagrass in the previous paragraph, but do not apply more than a total of 2 lb. N per 1,000 sq. ft. in one season. As with zoysia, slow-release nitrogen is preferable, but fast-release is also OK. As for all turfgrasses, phosphorus and potassium are best applied according to soil test results because many soils already have adequate amounts of these nutrients for turfgrass growth. If you need to apply phosphorus or potassium, it is best to core aerate beforehand to ensure the nutrients reach the roots.

Lovegrass presents Sicard Hollow June 4

The Hays Public Library has hired a new Young Adult Coordinator. Cheyenne Rowe, who previously worked at HPL as a library assistant, will facilitate library programs for teens while connecting them to books and other resources the library has to offer.

Rowe, originally from Dighton, graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in music performance and is in the process of getting a master’s degree in education. For the past two years she has taught music at Great Bend Middle School.

When asked why she wanted to return to HPL, Rowe said, “I’m excited to work in a space that blends books, creativity, and community in one place. But, more importantly, I'm very interested in building onto the awesome foundation that my predecessor put in place with the teens. There's something special about creating a space where young adults feel seen, heard, and inspired to build upon their knowledge and connect with other people in the community.”

Rowe began working at the Hays Public Library on May 19, 2025.

The Hays Fresh Produce Market is in full swing, offering farm-fresh and handcrafted items.

The market opened on May 24&nbsp;and will continue into the fall. It will operate from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays in the Bomgaars parking lot, 2900 Broadway Ave.

Greg Swob, organizer of the Hays Fresh Produce Market, said the market has been around for about 25 years and will include at least 22 vendors this season, with more to come.

"We opened up with about 18 vendors last Saturday, and that was 90% food," he said.

Swob said the market will run through October or November, depending on the weather. It features local and homegrown goods, including fresh produce, eggs, roasted peppers, jams, honey and crafts.

Handmade crafts will range from knitted to wooden items.

Swob said the market is still welcoming new vendors. Those interested can reach out through the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/454412422049889/">Hays Fresh Produce Market Facebook group</a>.

"We welcome anyone who has a product that they would like to sell, as long as it meets the state food sold to consumer guidelines," Swob said.

All items must be made or grown by the vendor, and reselling is not permitted, with the exception of peach sellers from outside the area.

Customers can expect a wider selection of sellers on Saturdays compared to Wednesdays. Swob also participates as a vendor, offering honey from his own hives through Swob Honey Farm.

"I want to thank the public for really supporting our market as well as they have," Swob said.

First Call for Help will distribute the supplies to students in need in late summer.

School supplies drive underway; free BackPACK the Pool on June 12

Fort Hays State University’s Esports Club and Department of Informatics are excited to announce afree, four-day STEM-based Gaming Development Camp&nbsp;this July for students entering grades 8 through 12. The day camp will be held in two identical sessions:July 8–11&nbsp;andJuly 14–17, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily at FHSU’s Tomanek Hall, Room 123.

Led byKevin Shaffer, along with members and alumni of the FHSU Esports Club, the camp offers a hands-on introduction to game development using Minecraft for PC. Campers will explore creative and survival modes, learn command line interaction, design gameplay arenas, and develop custom modules. They’ll also dive into 3D modeling to create character skins and participate in a gameplay contest.

“This camp gives students the chance to get under the hood of the game and change gameplay variables—sometimes in very entertaining ways,” said Shaffer.

Lunch, a camp T-shirt, and all materials are provided at no cost.&nbsp;Each session is limited to 12 participants to ensure a focused, interactive experience.

FHSU hosts free STEM-based gaming development camp for teens

The Fourth-Annual Child Care Provider Appreciation sponsored by Nex-Tech Wireless is quickly approaching on June 17 at 6 p.m. at Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering.

As child care professionals are the backbone of a thriving workforce, this annual event focuses on elevating local child care professionals and acknowledging their dedication and service to families and our youth. During the event, providers are treated to a delicious meal and dessert and receive a swag bag full of goodies contributed by sponsors. At the conclusion of the event, prizes are awarded to many of the attendees.

The Chamber in Hays is seeking sponsorships to support this event and area providers.

Sponsorships range from $100 to $500 with opportunities for businesses to connect with child care professionals during the event for an investment of $250 or more. The sponsorship deadline is Monday, June 2.

Other ways businesses can show their support is by providing giveaways to be shared with providers the night of the event.

A Ness County couple who were convicted of mistreatment of a former Air Force nurse who served in Vietnam were sentenced to probation on Wednesday.

L<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/032dc57b-89f7-4905-ba23-e72dd8543a9a">ynn and Opal Schmidt of Ransom were arrested in July&nbsp;each on a charge of mistreatment of a dependent adult, and they entered pleas in Ness County District Court on March 20.</a>

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/441aea96-981d-4ed7-a86b-d273b232e533">The victim's friend, Renata Craft, wrote letters</a> and contacted veterans organizations to attend the couple's sentencing hearing, and supporters of the victim packed the court to capacity on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Wild West Festival committee announced Wednesday the return of a carnival to the annual festivities with Garry Moore Amusement Carnival, enhancing the event with family-friendly entertainment and activities.

Scheduled to run alongside the festival concerts, the carnival will operate from July 3 to July 5, bringing a nostalgic and fun-filled atmosphere back to the festival grounds.

Advance daily passes offering unlimited carnival rides will be available for $25 each, providing festival-goers savings compared to the on-site, day-of price of $30.

These advance tickets can be purchased directly at the Wild West Festival grounds from June 28 through July 2, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Tickets will also be available during festival hours on July 2. Additional advanced sales locations throughout Hays will be announced in the coming days.

"We're excited to reintroduce the carnival as part of the Wild West Festival experience," said Julie Edgeman, president of the Wild West Festival committee. "Even though this year’s carnival will be somewhat smaller in scale than in past years, we're thrilled to provide an engaging, fun option for children and families while the main stage concerts are underway. Bringing back the carnival represents our dedicated effort to expand the enjoyment and inclusivity of this beloved community event."

The festival's iconic fireworks show returns as a highlight of Independence Day celebrations, illuminating the night sky starting at 10 p.m. on July 4.

The Wild West Fest 5K will return on July 5, with the same course from previous years, beginning at 8 a.m. near the Hays Aquatic Park. Proceeds from the 5K will help support the Hays Striders youth track club.

Additionally, festival-goers can look forward to the traditional Wild West Festival Parade, which will march through downtown Hays beginning at 10 a.m. on July 5.

Extending the excitement beyond festival dates, the Hays Soccer Club will host the Wild West Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament on July 12.

This annual sports event offers competitive play for all ages and serves as a perfect complement to the community-focused festival.

Carnival returns to enhance the Wild West Festival experience

District 1 – Cody Howland Cody Howland was elected to represent District 1. A lifelong Kansan, Cody lives in northeast Trego County where he works on his family farm. Prior to farming, he spent 14 years with Nex-Tech in Information Technology services. Cody and his wife Becky have been married for 17 years and are raising their two children, ages 15 and 11.

Cody brings valuable experience to the board, currently serving his third term on the board of directors for Golden Belt COOP in Ellis. With seven years of cooperative governance under his belt, he offers a strong background in financial management, strategic planning, and technology. Cody believes in the cooperative model and sees electric co-ops as vital to sustaining and enriching rural life in Kansas.

“Serving on a board is a great opportunity to directly impact the community it serves,” Cody said. “I’m looking forward to contributing to Western’s future, especially in areas like technology advancement, financial growth, and member engagement.”

Hays Arts Council reaches $2M milestone in art center renovation campaign

From the first time my dad took me fishing, it enchanted me, and it’s not just catching fish. It’s like diggin’ taters; you don’t know what you’ll get 'til you’ve got it. A recent Saturday trip to a friend’s catch and release farm pond with our youngest and her eldest retrieved old memories and made new ones.

Getting ready to fish is a marathon. Thank goodness, my hubs keeps track of tackle and poles while I focus on providing sustenance to those tempting underwater denizens with lures and worms. 

Our local market stocked perfect supplies to satisfy fisher-people from a nine-year-old to Gramps: Old Trapper beef jerky, cheese curds, watermelon and strawberry chunks, yogurt raisins, water, and fruit drinks. Once I loaded the cooler and tossed in handi-wipes, paper towels, sun hat, long sleeve shirt, folding chair, and camera, we hit the road.

Our daughter lives closer to the pond, so we met her there. Upon arrival, my breathing slowed and tension seeped out of taut muscles. A perfect rippling pond surrounded by cottonwoods and other trees along with a homemade dock awaited our appearance. 

 Resident birds raised a ruckus as we settled along the bank. A sentinel--a solemn bullfrog--floated amidst knobby mosses while eye-balling invaders. Apparently, we didn’t alarm it much because it didn’t move. What a perfect model for photos once everyone else focused on serious fishing.

Within minutes our daughter reeled in a palm-sized blue gill that jazzed her kiddo’s desire to outfish momma. The tournament was on. That youngster, a focused fisherwoman, couldn’t wait to land a biggun’. Gramps watched and grinned.

After a spell of repeatedly casting and reeling in lures, once hopeful cast-meisters’ patience wore thin enough that hubs headed south while the blondes worked their way north through reeds and tall grass to the dock on the other side. It was me, bull frogs, and camera left to our own devices. 

Don’t get me wrong. I love tossing a line and waiting for a bite, but I hadn’t shot nature photos for months. At that moment, I had two bullfrogs, hordes of red ear sliders, and raucous birds squabbling, in addition to loved ones offering poignant candids. I settled for the great photo ops before me.

When someone caught a fish, I focused the lens that direction, but the rest of the time, I searched for rippling reflections, eye-catching compositions using critters, water, moss, logs, trees, and leaves. Temps and breezes cooled me and kept bugs away so I could immerse myself in the moment until I heard another, “Got one.”

We spent a good three-plus hours reeling in not only blue gill but also small, medium, and large bass while turtles sunbathed on banks and fallen logs. Two performed energetic breast strokes through the water. Ripples from moving front legs framed heads peeking out of the water. Frogs floated in mossy beds, absorbed golden rays heating mottled amphibian flesh. Occasionally, I noted a pulse beating in their pale throats.

Now and then, loved ones headed back to refuel. As they snacked, I shared photos I snapped of them or local wildlife. Eventually, chores called, forcing us to abandon paradise to lucky fish, frogs, and turtles.

A recent Saturday trip to a friend’s catch and release farm pond with our youngest and her eldest retrieved old memories and made new ones.Getting ready to fish is a marathon. Thank goodness, my hubs keeps track of tackle and poles while I focus on providing sustenance to those tempting underwater denizens with lures and worms. Our local market stocked perfect supplies to satisfy fisher-people from a nine-year-old to Gramps: Old Trapper beef jerky, cheese curds, watermelon and strawberry chunks, yogurt raisins, water, and fruit drinks. Once I loaded the cooler and tossed in handi-wipes, paper towels, sun hat, long sleeve shirt, folding chair, and camera, we hit the road.Our daughter lives closer to the pond, so we met her there. The Hays Police Department executed a search warrant Thursday at a child care in Hays after reports of&nbsp;alleged child endangerment and potential drug use, Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said.

He said the search was part of an ongoing investigation.

Scheibler said police officers and officials from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment executed the warrant in the 2500 block of Donald Drive following reports made earlier in the week.

Scheibler said an officer sustained minor injuries from a dog bite during the search. No arrests have been made.

On Friday, the police department requested KDHE issue an emergency suspension to close the facility during the ongoing investigation,&nbsp;Scheibler said.

No names of potential suspects have been released.

Scheibler said all parties are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.&nbsp;
