The Thomas More Prep-Marian Singers will have their dinner/dessert "Seasons 2024" shows this weekend.

The dinner show will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at TMP. The show will be in the Dreiling Theater. Tickets are $25. The meal will include fried chicken and mashed potatoes provided by JD's Chicken. The show begins at 7 p.m.

The dessert show will be at 2 p.m. Sunday also at TMP. Desserts from the Rose Garden Banquet Hall will be provided after the show in the cafeteria.

Tickets are available at the school, online at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tmp-m.org/">tmp-m.org</a>&nbsp;or at the door on the days of the shows.

Katy Whalen, director of the TMP Singers, said the show will include large group numbers, solos and duets. The group consists of eight girls and eight boys freshmen through seniors who audition for spots in the group.

Audience members will enjoy hits from the 1970s through 2015, including Twenty One Pilots, Mamas &amp; the Papas as well as music theater.

"If you like music and you like dancing and want a fun, energetic show, you should come out and see us," Whalen said.

The event this weekend is the largest fundraiser for the group during the year. Money raised through the event will be used for travel for the group, which plans a trip every two years. Next year's trip destination has yet to be set. Over the summer, the group went to Nashville.

Whalen is in her first year teaching at TMP. She just graduated from Fort Hays State University with her music performance degree. She is a 2018 TMP grad and was in the Singers when she was in school.

"I'm so proud to see how far they have come from their first rehearsal back in August," Whalen said.

Ray was attempting to build a patio for the first time. He bought 100 cement blocks. Laying them out in a pattern, he discovered the chosen area was too small.

He stacked the blocks against the house and cleared more space. The next day Ray put the cement blocks back down, only to find that the ground was too hard to keep the patio level.

He ordered a truckload of sand to be delivered the following morning. Again he stacked the 100 blocks against the house.

Observing all this, Ray’s next-door neighbor asked, “Ray, are you going to put your patio away every night?”

Chamber in Hays, Kansas celebrated the outstanding achievements and
contributions of individuals and businesses at the 2024 Awards Ceremony hosted
at Fort Hays State University January 30.

During the awards presentation,
President and CEO Sarah Wasinger acknowledged the exemplary efforts of
community members in various categories, along with Chamber staff and board
leadership.

She also shared appreciation for Eagle
Communications President and CEO Kurt David for serving as this year’s emcee.

"By honoring the outstanding
individuals and businesses in Ellis County, we shine a spotlight on the
exceptional qualities that collectively contribute to making our community a
standout destination,” Wasinger said. "In recognizing the excellence that
surrounds us, we not only celebrate the achievements but also acknowledge the

The awards presentation began
with the Vyve Broadband Rising Star Award, recognizing young professionals for
excellence in leadership, community involvement, and chamber engagement. 

This year’s recipient of the Vyve
Broadband Rising Star Award was Tasha Eichman, Brand Manager at Nex-Tech
Wireless. 

Described as a true advocate for
the community, Tasha's passion for improving lives and dedication to serving
others with tenacity, passion, and integrity set her apart as an emerging
leader, Wasinger said.

The Nex-Tech Citizen of the Year
award was presented to Jayne Inlow, Development Officer for the HaysMed
Foundation. Jayne's quiet yet impactful contributions to the Kiwanis Club of
Hays and various community initiatives earned her this prestigious recognition,
Wasinger said.

High Plains Mental Health Center
received the eyeSMILE Vision + Dental Helping Hands Award, honoring their
exceptional work in improving the quality of life for residents in the Hays
area. 

“The center's tireless efforts
and commitment to mental health services have positively impacted vulnerable
populations in Kansas for nearly five decades,” Wasinger said.

LaVonne Giess, Employment
Services Manager at Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, was honored
with the Nex-Tech Wireless Businesswoman of the Year Award. 

“It was an honor to recognize LaVonne's
dedication to supporting individuals with disabilities and her significant
contributions to the community,” Wasinger said.

Brent Schulte, owner of Thirsty’s
Brew Pub &amp; Grill and Gella’s Diner &amp; Lb. Brewing Co., received the Grow
Hays Robert E. Schmidt Entrepreneur of the Year Award. 

“Brent's visionary leadership,
resilience, and commitment to giving back to the community made him a standout
recipient,” Wasinger said.

Insurance Planning was recognized
as the Werth Wealth Management Member Investor of the Year. 

“The company's long-standing
support, active participation, and financial contributions to The Chamber are
always appreciated and made them a most deserving choice for this year’s
award,” Wasinger said.

Regeena’s Flowers &amp; Events
received the City of Hays Small Business Achievement Award, acknowledging their
exceptional service and impact on the community over the past 25 years.

The evening concluded with the
presentation of the Golden Belt Bank Hall of Fame Award to Errol Wuertz. 

Recognized for his lifelong
commitment to community service, Wuertz's extensive contributions to various
boards and organizations, including his 42-year tenure as a Chamber Ambassador,
were celebrated as the award was presented.

"The remarkable
contributions of our community members paint a vivid picture of the exceptional
character that defines Ellis County, making it a place where people truly care
about one another," Wasinger said. “Recognizing excellence in Ellis County

The January weather has been a mixed bag for local agriculture producers.

"The cattle guys are really the ones that are impacted, of course," said Stacy Campbell, Cottonwood Extension District agriculture agent for Ellis and Barton counties. "I think they're faring OK."

He said some ranchers had cattle still out feeding on crop stalks when the extremely cold temperatures and snow hit a little more than two weeks ago.&nbsp;

"But I heard them say, 'We got to get them home.' So, I think everybody got them home and off stalks. They do that during the winter because it's calving time, too," Campbell said.

"I think everybody's in pretty good shape, and we love the moisture, so I haven't heard anybody complaining. It's just going to get a little messy and muddy for a while."

Hays received almost 9 inches of snow on Jan. 8 and 9, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City. The storm started with rainfall. Another 2 inches of snow fell on Jan. 15 as a <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/08cd4ea9-5055-4f85-bc35-c443126638d7">record overnight low</a> of -14 degrees was set.

Temperatures have been well below freezing for most days since the beginning of the year. On Wednesday, 1 to 2 inches of snow still remained on the ground, as officially measured at the K-State Agricultural Center on the south edge of Hays.

"Overall, the moisture has been great," Campbell said. "We need more of it, of course. A lot of the ponds dried up last year, so that's still a big question, but hopefully, we'll get some spring rains.

"Right now, we should get off to a good start this early spring."&nbsp;

That's good news for local wheat farmers.&nbsp;

Records at the research center show the 154-year cumulative average of January moisture in Hays is 0.45. As of Thursday, Hays had received 1.21 inches of precipitation.

All of Ellis County was reported to be out of extreme drought for the first time in months as of the Jan. 12 report from the U.S. Drought Monitor.&nbsp; However, most of the county still remains in moderate drought according to the Jan. 25 report.&nbsp;

There was a man who had worked all of his life and has saved all of his money.  He was a real cheapskate when it came to his money. He loved money more than just about anything, and just before he died, he said to his wife:  “Now listen, when I die I want you to take all my money and place it in the casket with me. Because I want to take all my money to the after life.” &nbsp;So he got his wife to promise him with all her heart that when he died she would put all the money in the casket with him. When one day he died. He was stretched out in the casket, the wife was sitting there in black next to their best friend. When they finished the ceremony, just before the undertakers got ready to close the casket, the wife said, “Wait a minute!”  She had a shoe box with her, she came over with the box and placed it in the casket. Then the undertakers locked the casket and rolled it away.  Her friend said, “I hope you weren’t crazy enough to put all that money in there with that stingy old man.”  She said, “Yes, I promised. I’m a good Christian, I can’t lie. I promised him that I was to put that money in that casket with him.”  “You mean to tell me you put every cent of his money in the casket with him?”  “I sure did,” said the wife. “I got it all together, put it into my account and I wrote him a check.”

🎙Three spots remain for Leadership Hays 2024

A collaboration between eight of Kansas’ small-town breweries will recognize Kansas Day with a fundraiser to benefit the Kansas Sampler Foundation.

Eight Kansas breweries are working on special beers to be released in honor of Kansas Day, the commemoration of Kansas becoming the 34th state on Jan. 29, 1861. The beers and special activities at each brewery will highlight Kansas products, Kansas trivia, and more to celebrate the state’s birthday.

Most of the events will take place at the participating breweries between Jan. 25 and Jan. 29. The participating breweries are:

“For more than 160 years, Kansas’ statehood has been celebrated in a variety of ways, from square dancing, and butter churning at grade schools across the state to eating distinctly Kansas foods like chili and cinnamon rolls,” said Sarah Green, co-director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation. “Getting out to explore something you enjoy is a year-round activity, but it’s something special when it happens around Kansas Day.”

In addition to the beers to be released, each brewery will be supporting the work of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, an organization that has preserved and sustained rural culture for 30 years. The breweries will donate proceeds from beer sales to support their work of educating Kansans about Kansas and networking with and supporting rural communities.&nbsp;

"Kansas is geographically the heart of America. When you are born and raised here, you appreciate the landscape, the culture, the creativity, and the generational work ethic. It is humbling meeting out-of-state travelers who praise the kindness and generosity of our citizens. Whether they are exploring Kansas for business or pleasure, I know I picked the right state to call home when we are referred to as the 'nicest people we've met in our travels.' That speaks volumes about our state!” said Brett Straight, brand master at Defiance Brewing Company in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;

Straight adds “Here at Defiance, we celebrate Kansas and the people who call it home all year-round with our American Wheat Beer, Kansan. It's brewed in honor of the people who give the heart of America its pulse."

The breweries will take part in special promotions as part of the event, including commemorative glassware, trivia contests, and more.
