The 55th-annual Smoky Hill Art Exhibition at the Hays Arts Center, 112 E. 11th St., will anchor the Hays Arts Council Spring Art Walk again.

The Smoky Hill Art Exhibition is the state's oldest juried art exhibition. This year, 298 pieces were submitted by artists from across Kansas.

Sixty-two art pieces were selected for the exhibition. The gamut of the fine art world is represented — ceramics, paintings, glass and assemblages, said Brenda Meder, Hays Arts Council executive director.

"People can come and celebrate, chill and engage with our downtown in ways maybe they don't have other opportunities to do," Meder said.

"We are loaded with art, but of course, we have other great things going on in our downtown as well—great businesses and places to eat and drink."

Prior to Saturday's main event, the Fort Hays State University Jazz Bands will perform a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Downtown Pavillion.&nbsp;

On Saturday, the Hays Public Library will host a watercolor demonstration by Margie Hammerschmidt of the Western Plains Painters at 1 p.m. in the Schmidt Gallery. At noon, the library will also host a community acoustic jam session in the first-floor commons.

The Hays Community Theatre will host free performances of Everett Robert's 10-minute play "Sputnik: The True Story of How Professional Wrestling Integrated Memphis, Tennesee" at 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. at 121 E. Eighth St.

Good Hope 4-H will host a project showcase, face painting and a fundraiser in the Downtown Pavilion at 10th and Main.

"Some of these 4-H students do amazing things," Meder said.

Jeanne Riedel will be in the pavilion singing her mystery book "Soon You Will Be Mine."

Randy Mader will provide live music all day at the pavilion.

Local crafters also have been invited to display and sell their goods in the pavilion during the art walk. See a list in the schedule below.

The Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau will have its Chalk Art Station in Union Pacific Park next to the pavilion.

Fort Hays State University will host two exhibitions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on campus.

The Hornak Estate FHSU Art Collection will be exhibited at the Moss Thorns Gallery. "BWCAW Puga," sculpture by Wayne Potratz, will be on display in the Taylor Gallery in the Center for Applied Technology and Sculpture.

The arts council has two youth events coming up in the next week.

The arts council will honor its youth Creative Writing Award winners at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Memorial Union.

The annual Famous Figures finals competition for Ellis County fifth-graders will be on May 3.

Residents are urged to stand in unity at Rock Against Rape, a concert raising awareness of sexual violence through a night of electrifying music.

Hays-based Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services provides help and healing to victims of violence and abuse.

Options Campus Advocate Anniston Weber said the concert's mission is to connect with young adults 18 to 25.

"The goal is to reach college-aged students because they are at higher risk of being sexually assaulted," she said. "Hays is a college town and a lot of our culture involves drinking and partying."

The third-annual Rock Against Rape concert takes the stage at 7 p.m. on May 4 at the Home Event Center, 229 W 10th St.

The lineup includes young local bands and performers such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100084194772242">Adrian Parl</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Beforethewintermusic">Before the&nbsp;Winter</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/CactusCollateral">Cactus Collateral</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/dangerouslybiased">Dangerously Biased</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557616988843">Free Minded</a>.

"Free Minded is a group of college students who are heavily involved at the Fort Hays music department," Weber said. "They're a relatively new band, but they've performed for us for three years, and they're fantastic."

Advocates and volunteers will oversee the venue, while bartenders are prepared to recognize signs of sexual harassment or predatory behavior when serving alcohol.

The concert is open to anyone 18 and older, with a $10 admission fee for attendees younger than 21 and a $5 fee for those 21 and older.

Bar or restaurant owners who would like to participate in a training program on how to prevent sexual violence can call Options at 785-625-4202 to sign up.

"The concert is a way to connect with people through music and the tradition of coming together at a local bar to share stories and experiences," Options Executive Director Jennifer Hecker said.

Before their performances, band members will share information and statistics about sexual violence.

"We're trying to find light, easy ways to talk about a difficult topic that as a culture, we have not been comfortable talking about," Hecker said.

Options' resources will be highlighted throughout the venue.

Each performance will last about 50 minutes and will be scheduled to allow attendees to show their support.

"I try to put more mellow bands at the beginning of the night so people can come for the music and chill. As the night progresses, the music gets a little 'harder' so to speak," Weber said.

Rock Against Rape is not a fundraiser, but people can donate through QR codes at the event or the <a href="https://help4abuse.org/donate/">Options donate page</a>.

Hecker said the key message of Rock Against Rape is that rapists are responsible for sexual assault, not alcohol.

"It's about holding those perpetrators accountable and putting the blame where it belongs. Not on the victim, what they were wearing or how much they had to drink," she said.

This year’s Hays Public Library Summer Reading Challenge theme is Adventure Begins at Your Library! Taking that theme to heart, the library will have weeks focused on adventurous subjects such as pirates, nature, dragons, and oceans. The challenge will run from May 20th&nbsp;to July 31st.

The library will use the online program Beanstack to track summer reading for children and teens. Through Beanstack, families register participants and use the program to log their reading progress. Staff will assist with sign-up and logging for those without computer access. Challenges have been created for each age group, early literacy, elementary, and young adult.

For children and teens, the Summer Reading Challenge is an exciting way to improve literacy during the summer months.&nbsp;Numerous studies show that kids who don't read during&nbsp;summer&nbsp;vacation, actually slip in reading ability by the time school begins in the fall.

Registration is required and begins May 1st, online or in person. Each child who registers receives a gift. A prize will be given to each child who completes their challenge by the end of the event on July 31st. Those who complete the challenge also will put their name in a drawing for the grand prize of their choice. The ending party, open to everyone, will be held at the Hays Aquatic Park on Aug. 2.

Adults participate in the Summer Challenge by completing activities on a bookmark that can be picked up at the library, beginning May 20th. They will receive a tote bag when they sign up. There will be 10 activities. Adults will have until July 31st&nbsp;to complete all the activities and submit an entry into the end of the summer adult prize drawing.&nbsp;

A day of activities will kick off the Challenge on May 20. Along with crafts and snacks, the day will include performances by Jammin’ Randy at 10 a.m., Jetpack Jason at 1 p.m., and an interactive movie at 3 p.m.

The Chamber in Hays is pleased to announce tickets are now available for the <a href="https://hayschamber.com/events/10th-annual-plinko-patio-party-sponsored-by-stone-house-spirit-and-cigar">Stone House Spirit and Cigar Plinko Patio Party</a>, set to take place on May 3, in conjunction with the Annual Chamber Golf Tournament at the Smoky Hill Country Club.&nbsp;

Tickets are $25 and will remain on sale through today.

This annual tradition, now in its 10th year, allows area residents who do not play golf to enjoy a day at the prestigious country club while supporting the Chamber during the tournament.

Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO of the Chamber, expressed her excitement about this year's Plinko Patio Party.

"The Plinko Patio Party has become a cherished tradition in our community, offering a unique and fun-filled experience for all attendees,” Wasinger said. “It's a fantastic opportunity for our residents to come together, enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Smoky Hill Country Club, and support the important work of the Chamber."

The Plinko Patio Party features entertainment and activities, including the namesake Plinko game, gives attendees a chance to win prizes donated by local businesses and community partners, a Taco Bar and cocktails.

Attendees will also have access to an exclusive raffle featuring a cocktail mixology basket, valued at more than $100, provided by Stone House Spirit and Cigar.&nbsp;

Raffle tickets are priced at $1 each or six for $5.

“The Chamber extends its heartfelt gratitude to Stone House Spirit and Cigar for their generous support as the title sponsor of this year's Plinko Patio Party and Raffle and their raffle contributions,” Wasinger said. “As a new business in Hays, their commitment to our community and dedication to making this event a success is commendable.”

Along with the Plinko Patio Party, attendees will have full access to associated tournament events going on throughout the day, including the main Golf Tournament raffle, featuring two prize options: a liquor and cooler package valued at more than $800 and a golf package valued at more than $1,000.
