"The Merchant of Venice" is a play by&nbsp;William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1596 and 1598.

The students of Travis Grizzell, TMP-Marian Jr./Sr. High School drama director, will present the bard's famous comedy this weekend on the school's  Dreiling Theater stage. 

"It's not traditionally taught a lot in schools," Grizzell said. "It's not like 'Romeo and Juliet' or even 'A Midsummer Night's Dream.' It's classified as a comedy, but there's some very dramatic things there as well.&nbsp; There's a love story. There's a little bit there for everyone."&nbsp;&nbsp;

The version by the TMP drama program will take place in the Edwardian period rather than the Renaissance. Male characters will wear three-piece suits with ascots and sport lots of facial hair, while the female characters' clothing will be less voluminous and more fitted.&nbsp;

Male characters dominate the story and several female students will portray men.

Last year, the students performed Shakespeare's "A Midsummer's Night Dream."

"We've got a great group for this. They really do interpret it and act it out well," Grizzzell said. "'Merchant' is a little bit heavier than 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' with a lot of timely things in it.&nbsp; 

"It deals with antisemitism, stereotypes, some disparity in society. It starts a lot of good conversations, and we learn a little bit about history, too."

The central conflict in "The Merchant of Venice" stems from the segregation of Jewish people who were present at the time of its writing.&nbsp;

The commonalities in human lives over the centuries keep Shakespeare relevant for today's readers and audiences, Grizzell said.&nbsp;

"He wrote about the human condition and the things we all go through and feel. A lot of the things we were struggling with back then as a society, we're still struggling with today," he said.

Language that may come across as dry or stilted when one is reading Shakespeare today should come alive when performed on the stage. Grizzell said his students do a really good job of making that happen.

"I always tell the students if the acting is emphatic enough, and they're expressive, and the emotion is there, even though there's a language barrier, you'll get what's going on, and the audience will, too,"&nbsp; he said.

Phrases that originated in "The Merchant of Venice" and are still used today by English speakers include "pound of flesh" and "quality of mercy."&nbsp;

Grizzell teaches a Shakespeare unit in his drama class. He recently showed a performance of "The Merchant of Venice" by professional actors at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London.

"A lot of the students after seeing that were really excited about doing it. They'd kind of dipped their toes into it," he said.&nbsp;

The play will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and again at 2 p.m. Sunday.

LOGAN - Need a place to stash your red or white? The Hansen Museum will host a Basket Weaving class with Instructor Marsha Jensen of Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, April 20th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hansen Museum Community Room, 110 W. Main, Logan, KS 67646.

In this workshop you will weave a basket with a divider that holds 2 bottles of wine. This basket uses a D handle that becomes part of the basket structure. There will be dyed reed available in a variety of colors for those who wish to include a color accent. A natural black walnut dip will be available as a finishing touch for your basket at the end of the class.

The cost to attend is $85 with discounts available for Patron &amp; Sustaining Museum Members. Registrations are non-refundable. Honoring the late co-founder of the Deines Cultural Center’s monthly jam session, a special “Pickin’ at the Deines” event is being held this month on March 17th. The 3rd Annual Ronn Raymer Memorial Jam will begin at 3 pm on Sunday, March 17th at the Center at 820 N. Main in Russell with the traditional pot luck supper served at 5 pm followed by more music. Participants are encouraged to bring their acoustic instrument(s), their voice, a listening ear, and a food dish to share.

Beginning with the Frances Giebler Fiddle Fest in 2003, Raymer and Bob Roe of Russell, JF Stover of Hill City, and Nancy Selbe, former director of the DCC began the sessions as a meeting and sharing of regional musicians. Sessions have been attended by professional and amateur musicians from Colorado, Kansas City, Hill City, Great Bend, Osborne, Plainville, Jetmore, Garden City, Sterling, Hays, Memphis and more.

Raymer was a consistent participant, leader and promoter of the jam sessions providing vocals and playing guitar, auto-harp, washboard and ukulele. His presence will be included at the memorial session with videos shared by his family and family members will be attending.

BUNKER HILL, KS – The history series&nbsp;Cottonwood Connections&nbsp;is back for season four with host Don Rowlison.&nbsp; The half-hour docu-series airs on Smoky Hills PBS at&nbsp;6 p.m.&nbsp;Central Time on Sundays starting March 17.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rebroadcasts of each episode will air on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 6 p.m.

This season the show travels to various locations across Kansas including the Home on the Range cabin, one-room school houses, Historic Fort Hays, the Smoky Hill Trail, and much more.

"We are excited to be presenting another season of topics that share the rich, unique and sometimes challenging story of our state and region to Smoky Hills PBS,” said Ed Lowry, Cottonwood Connections Creator. &nbsp;“Don Rowlison brings a wealth of knowledge to the series and is connected with so many other people that share their expertise&nbsp;and experience."

The series is hosted by Don Rowlison and presented by The Friends of Cottonwood Ranch, an organization that supports the work of the Cottonwood Ranch Historic site and has the mission of encouraging historical education about the plains.

Rowlison is an archeologist who specialized in studying the pre-historic people of the plains. In 1985, he became site curator for the Cottonwood Ranch Historic Site and devoted himself to studying all the various issues that impacted people settling the region in the late 1800s.&nbsp; Additionally, Don is himself, a cowboy and was inducted to the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2008 as a historian.

Seasons one, two, and three, and the documentary&nbsp;The Legacy of Cottonwood Ranch&nbsp;are available to stream anytime on&nbsp;<a href="https://video.smokyhillstv.org/passport/learn-more/">Smoky Hills PBS Passport</a>.
