🎙FHSU counting on Tiger fans’ support this Giving Day, today

A short Hays City Commission meeting Thursday resulted in funding approvals for two projects.

Commissioners approved a low bid of $148,386 from Mid-America Sports Construction, Lee's Summit, Missouri, for a 50% match request from Fort Hays State University to replace the aging turf at Larks Park.

FHSU and the Hays Larks will pay the other half of the cost.&nbsp;Larks Park is owned by the city and managed by FHSU.

The turf was installed in 2012 and has a life expectancy of eight to 10 years.

Also approved by the city commission was a bid by Commercial Builders, Hays, of $1,337,700 to construct a larger hangar for the Kansas Highway Patrol at Hays Regional Airport.

KHP is acquiring a second, larger airplane with thermal imaging and mapping capabilities.

The city is responsible for building the new hangar and KHP will purchase it from the city when construction is completed. KHP will reimburse the city 100% of the construction costs and also pay the city a total of $350,155 for project services rendered. 

The new hangar building will be 85x80 feet, with dedicated office space, a conference/kitchen area and full bathroom, and employee parking.&nbsp;

A utility easement on the city-owned Braun property, 27th and Commerce Parkway, was approved for a Midwest Energy gas pipeline.&nbsp;

It will provide redundant gas service to Hays north of Interstate 70.

The commission also approved the mayor's nominations of new members to several city boards, including:

The Hays Symphony will be combining with FHSU choirs for its spring finale concert on Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The concert, themed “Tragedy and Triumph,” celebrates and bids farewell to another season of majestic music.

Concert-goers will get to hear the rare sound of a full concert orchestra and choir through the opening performance of Mozart’s Coronation Mass. The program will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4.

“Our final concert of the season, Tragedy and Triumph, will bring together the Hays Symphony and FHSU Choirs for Mozart’s elegant and sublime Coronation Mass,” stated Music Director Brian Buckstead earlier in the season. “We will bring the season to an exciting close with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, a bold, expressive, and thrilling masterpiece by the beloved composer.”

The two immense pieces comprising the concert program reinforce the dual themes proposed by Director Buckstead, “Tragedy” and “Triumph.” In Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, hammering brass repeatedly clash against blissful melodies that imitate daydreams. The master composer echoes the way fate can cruelly intrude upon happiness through the sudden blasting of his signature trumpet rhythms.

Meanwhile, Mozart’s Mass in C Major offers triumphant rejoice for festive occasions. Originally reserved for royal coronations and religious holidays, the piece is now regularly revived for annual celebrations both sacred and symphonic.

These two pieces, each grand yet produced almost exactly a century apart from one another, will be staged together for a truly unique concert experience.

The “Tragedy and Triumph” concert closes out a season of crowd favorites ranging from the fall’s Outdoor and Holiday Pops Concerts to Holst’s sounds of space with the annual Children’s Halloween Concert. The spring gave spotlight to the student musical talent at Fort Hays State University through its Arias and Concertos Concert. Now, the Hays Symphony invites the community to its gripping season finale of monumental masterpieces by Mozart and Tchaikovsky.

As far as finale concerts go, Director Buckstead expresses his sincerity that those in attendance will be moved by the symphony’s efforts. “Nothing beats the experience of live music, performed with passion by the wonderful members of our orchestra.”

Like with all Hays Symphony concerts, attendance is free and open to the public. After the concert, attendees are invited to the hall’s lobby to meet the musicians at the post-concert reception sponsored by Auto World.

Did you know that approximately 666,500 youth up to 20 years old annually work on farms operated by persons other than their guardians? That 22,600 farm injuries occur to these youth each year, more than in any profession employing youth? And that 100 youth die each year in farming-related incidents.

In an effort to mitigate agricultural injuries and fatalities to young workers in agriculture. Several K-State Research &amp; Extension Districts will be offering a Hazardous Occupation Safety Training in Agriculture (HOSTA) or Tractor and Farm Safety Course for youth on Saturday, April 27th from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be held at Hoxie Implement, 933 Oak Ave. Hoxie, Kansas. Many thanks to Outdoor Bank for providing the lunch and refreshments and to Thunder Linner Memorial Fund for helping sponsor the training manuals.

In a collaboration with businesses, state and county agencies. K-State Research &amp; Extension Agents will teach this course covering farm and machinery safety, including proper tractor operation and maintenance, grain safety, implement use safety, livestock safety and more. The United States Department of Labor requires youth 14 – 15 years of age attend this safety training in order to work on a farm for someone other than their parents, and in some instances even when working on the family farm.

Participants must complete some assignments before attending the training on the 27th. To obtain this information and to pay the $10 registration fee by Friday, April 19th. You will need to visit one of the following K-State Research &amp; Extension Offices – Twin Creeks 785-421-3411, Golden Prairie 785-673-4805, Phillips-Rooks 785-425-6851 and Cottonwood District 785-628-9430.

Some Extension Offices may provide transportation to the training, don’t delay and register by Friday, April 19th for the Tractor &amp; Farm Machinery Safety Course for youth 14 - 15 years of age to be held in Hoxie on Saturday, April 27th.

Several K-State Research &amp; Extension Districts will be offering a Hazardous Occupation Safety Training in Agriculture (HOSTA) or Tractor and Farm Safety Course for youth on Saturday, April 27th from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It will be held at Hoxie Implement, 933 Oak Ave. Hoxie, Kansas. Many thanks to Outdoor Bank for providing the lunch and refreshments and to Thunder Linner Memorial Fund for helping sponsor the training manuals.In a collaboration with businesses, state and county agencies. K-State Research &amp; Extension Agents will teach this course covering farm and machinery safety, including proper tractor operation and maintenance, grain safety, implement use safety, livestock safety and more. The United States Department of Labor requires youth 14 – 15 years of age attend this safety training in order to work on a farm for someone other than their parents, and in some instances even when working on the family farm.Participants must complete some assignments before attending the training on the 27th. To obtain this information and to pay the $10 registration fee by Friday, April 19th. You will need to visit one of the following K-State Research &amp; Extension Offices – Twin Creeks 785-421-3411, Golden Prairie 785-673-4805, Phillips-Rooks 785-425-6851 and Cottonwood District 785-628-9430.Some Extension Offices may provide transportation to the training, don’t delay and register by Friday, April 19th for the Tractor &amp; Farm Machinery Safety Course for youth 14 - 15 years of age to be held in Hoxie on Saturday, April 27th.Stacy Campbell is a Crop Production Extension agent in the Cottonwood District (which includes Barton and Ellis counties) for K-State Research and Extension. The Kansas Legislature&nbsp;is a program that takes place during the legislative session and gives the legislators and viewers the opportunity to discuss up-to-date issues. During the program, viewers can call 1-800-337-4788 with their legislative questions.&nbsp;

Becky Kiser, News Reporter for Hays Post/Eagle Radio, has been named the moderator for the 2024 season of&nbsp;The Kansas Legislature.&nbsp; She will be joined by two or three legislators during each show.

Since 2005, the John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days have been an annual celebration of the scholarly work of Fort Hays State University students, faculty and staff. The work is shared among colleagues and with the public.

This year's event is April 29-May 3 at several locations on campus. <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/research/events-and-opportunities/sacad/">Online content</a> will be available the entire week.

&nbsp;A special open house will be May 1 for on-campus exhibitions, including:

The event is open to all academic disciplines.

Included in the presentations are traditional posters, art and creative works, musical performances, applied technology projects, and an opportunity to meet published authors, which is new this year.&nbsp;

Morgan Steele, criminal justice program assistant professor, said  scholarly and creative activity encourages critical thinking, innovation, collaboration and leadership.

"We have so many outstanding researchers — faculty members and students — who are doing really fascinating, impactful work in their areas," Steele said.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Research is important, he said, because there are so many things we don't know.

Students doing research come from different backgrounds and experiences, while many faculty come from around the world. All have a unique perspective.

"There are things we are learning just now. It's always a good thing to keep pushing, not just yourself as an individual but in your field as a whole," he said.

Poster information will be archived permanently in the&nbsp;<a href="https://scholars.fhsu.edu/sacad/" target="_blank">FHSU Scholars Repository.</a>

The <a href="https://www.haysmemorial.com/obituary/John-Heinrichs">late John Heinrichs </a>was a popular FHSU geosciences professor, department chairman, and internationally known Arctic researcher who launched the original Research and Creative Activities Week.&nbsp;

Research and creative activities are 20% of the job requirements for FHSU faculty.

"A lot of people don't know what we do at Fort Hays. Being able to see why we do what we do and how we go about doing it is really just going to be such an important thing for everyone in the Hays community to see," Steele said.&nbsp;
