The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division announced in a news release that an asphalt maintenance project will take place on Hall Street between 45th and 48th streets. 

Repairs will begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and will 
reopen when the project is completed. The road will be closed to through traffic
for the safety of staff and the traveling public. The estimated completion date is the same day, weather permitting. 

Motorists traveling in the affected area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is complete.

TOPEKA -&nbsp;Washburn University is pleased to announce its President's List honorees for the spring 2022 semester. To qualify for the President's List, a student must complete at least 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 4.0.

MANHATTAN — Kansas agriculture has a beauty like no other and we strive to acknowledge and appreciate it throughout the state. You can show us the true beauty of the state’s ag industry through the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s (KDA) annual photo contest. KDA is accepting entries until August 22.

This year’s KDA Photo Contest categories were selected to promote different aspects of Kansas agriculture.&nbsp;Farm to Fork, Innovation in Agriculture, Four-Legged Friends,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ad Astra&nbsp;categories will showcase Kansas agriculture in many ways — the products of our labor that feed our local communities, the scientific and technological advancements that increase efficiency and value, the many animals that play a role in family-run farms and ranches, and the overall beauty of Kansas agriculture. 

And for the second year, a&nbsp;video&nbsp;category will showcase drone footage, harvest videos, or other short clips of under 30 seconds. 

As always, there will be a separate&nbsp;Youth&nbsp;category, for young photographers under age 19. 

Prizes will be awarded to the top two winners in each of the six categories.

KDA serves to advocate for agriculture, the state’s largest industry and economic driver. Photos which best capture the categories will be used throughout the year as we tell the story of Kansas agriculture. After submission, KDA is granted permission to use any photograph for publications, social media, websites, displays, etc. without payment or other consideration from the photographer.

Continuing with our theme of “The Making of a Leader,” guest speaker MAJ Evan T. Perperis will speak with us about Leadership, Loss and Lessons From the War on Terror. Perperis is an active duty Army Special Forces Major currently assigned to 1st Infantry Division as the Community Engagements Officer and Big Red One Year of the Family Physical Strength lead.&nbsp;

Over the last 18 years, he’s spent 44 months of time in combat zones including the cities of Baghdad, Mahmudiya and Samarra in Iraq. During his free time he is a professional Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) athlete.&nbsp;His military and OCR accomplishments are chronicled in his book "Ultra-OCR Man: From Special Forces Soldier to Record Setting Obstacle Course Racing Athlete" and the upcoming documentary Ultra-OCR Man scheduled for release in Summer 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp; JOIN US IN PERSON!

Leadership, loss and lessons from the War on Terror Lunch & Learn is Thursday

TOPEKA&nbsp;– Lieutenant Governor and Department of Commerce Secretary David Toland have announced the call for nominations for the 2022 Kansas Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week Awards. The annual awards are just one way the Department of Commerce notes the growing impact minority- and women-led companies have on the entire state economy.

Nominations open for Kansas women and minority enterprise development awards

GREAT BEND - Barton Community College (BCC) has reestablished a once-popular resource utilized by civic groups, local conferences and more – the Barton Speakers’ Bureau.

The bureau is a collection of presentations on myriad topics prepared and presented by experts at the college. 

Options range from motivational topics like perseverance and leadership and informative speeches on social support and mental wellness to more lighthearted and interesting presentations on history and the importance of art. 

Vice-President of Instruction Elaine Simmons said she remembers the original Speaker’s Bureau and how well-utilized it was.

“It was a popular option for the community and I’m excited for its return,” she said. “We are thankful for the nudge from community leadership to revive this resource and look forward to other opportunities to interact and respond to community needs.”

Hays Area Planning Commission meets tonight

Beginning 8 a.m. Monday, East 19th Street in Hays will be closed to traffic on the west side of the MacArthur Road intersection for pavement repairs. 

Repairs should be completed by end of day on Friday.&nbsp;

Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is hosting an event to assist veterans living in northwestern Kansas with understanding VA services available to them, getting enrolled for VA health care, and beginning the process of filing disability claims.

“There are close to 2,000 veterans in northwestern Kansas who are not enrolled for VA health care,” said Jeff Herndon, public affairs officer for Dole VA. “Almost half of them reside in Ellis County. It is our goal to ensure veterans are receiving every benefit they have earned, and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to get enrolled.”

The outreach event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at VFW Post 9706, 2106 Vine in Hays.

Representatives from Dole VA’s Health Benefits department, Veteran Benefits Administration (VBA), and service officers from Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) will be available throughout the designated time to process actions.

Veterans should bring a copy of their DD-214 and most recent tax return to expedite enrollment and claims. Dependents and family members of veterans are also invited to attend.

No two years are the same in farming, and this year’s wheat crop has seen its’ fair share of challenges. However, we are fortunate in Ellis County to have some fields that may have good wheat! If you are&nbsp;one of those, consider&nbsp;entering&nbsp;your best wheat&nbsp;into the Ellis County Fair Open Class – Market Wheat Show.&nbsp;

Entries&nbsp;are&nbsp;fast and easy,&nbsp;fill up a&nbsp;provided&nbsp;bag of your best wheat while unloading at the elevator,&nbsp;or at&nbsp;your bins at&nbsp;home. Return&nbsp;a crop data card after harvest to either the elevator,&nbsp;or&nbsp;Cottonwood&nbsp;Extension&nbsp;District&nbsp;-&nbsp;HaysOffice at&nbsp;601 Main.

Entries must be combine run and shall not be cleaned in any way. Each exhibitor will be limited to one entry for each class. The classes are hard red winter wheat, hard white winter wheat and other varieties or hybrids.&nbsp;

Samples will be sent to the Kansas Grain Inspection Service. Samples will be analyzed and judged on the following criteria based solely on a points system: Variety, Mill &amp; Bake – 250; Protein – 225; Test Weight – 200; Dockage – 200; Crop Data Card – 25; Shrunken &amp; Broken – 100 with a total possible of 1,000 points.&nbsp;

Cash and ribbons will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd&nbsp;place winners, not to mention bragging rights!

Farmers can enter wheat for prizes, cash at Ellis County Fair

The Ellis County Ham Operators want to invite everyone to attend the American Radio Relay League Field Day&nbsp;beginning&nbsp;with a swap fest at 10 a.m. and official field day activities starting at 1 p.m.&nbsp;on Saturday,&nbsp;June 25, 2022, near the west officer’s quarters at Historic Fort Hays.

ARRL Field Day&nbsp;is a coordinated&nbsp;opportunity for thousands of amateur radio enthusiasts throughout the U.S and Canada to set up temporary communications stations and make&nbsp;radio contacts with others. Licensed radio operators (called “Hams”) spend the weekend&nbsp;honing their technical skills for&nbsp;community outreach&nbsp;and&nbsp;emergency preparedness.

The first&nbsp;ARRL Field Day&nbsp;event&nbsp;was held in June 1933&nbsp;with a pause from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. The event&nbsp;continues to be a popular annual activity with growing public appeal.

“Take a moment to put your cell phone aside and join us on Field Day 2022 and get a glimpse of the excitement modern Ham radio operators&nbsp;experience today,” said John Begler, president of ECHO.

During the contest, stations exchange call signs and information about their locations and equipment using a variety of radios from old tube-style relics to modern sophisticated digital radios.&nbsp;

The event is a&nbsp;contest&nbsp;for&nbsp;clubs, like ECHO, teams and other individuals to&nbsp;make contact with as many stations as possible&nbsp;across the Americas and around the world.&nbsp;Field Day&nbsp;activities span over two days,&nbsp;officially beginning on Saturday,&nbsp;June 25&nbsp;at&nbsp;18:00&nbsp;hours Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which is 1 p.m. central standard time,and ends on Sunday, June 26, at&nbsp;20:59&nbsp;hours (UTC), which is one minute before 6 p.m. central standard time in Hays.

“This is a great opportunity to learn more about the history of communications, and the radio communication tools that continue to have value today,” Begler said.

The event is designed&nbsp;for&nbsp;amateur radio enthusiasts to hone their skills and&nbsp;is an open invitation from&nbsp;the public&nbsp;to learn more and maybe, one day become Ham operators&nbsp;themselves.&nbsp;

TOPEKA — Washburn University is pleased to announce the students in its spring 2022 graduating class. More than 800 students completed their courses for certificates, associate, bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees.

"These students have worked hard to not only better themselves but they are the best representation for Washburn. We know they will continue to uphold our standards long after graduation," said Dr. Jerry Farley, Washburn University president.
