program's commitment to strengthening democracy. Dr. Larry Gould, ADP Faculty Advisor and
Political Science Department Chair, said the upcoming Times Talks will "equip students with the
knowledge, skills, and experiences to be informed and engaged, ready to tackle current and future
issues to ensure a thriving and equitable democracy."

This spring, Times
Talks will cover topics such as “Bipartisanship and Young Legislators” or “Colorado Springs and the
Libertarian Party.” 

“Times Talks are a powerful university-community tool
for preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens," Gould said.

FHSU American Democracy Project announces spring schedule

GREAT BEND — February is national Career Technical Education month, and Barton will be hosting a Virtual Career Technical Education fair all month to showcase Barton’s career programs.

All middle and high school students are invited to participate. Students can explore career programs by viewing videos, doing activities, escaping virtual escape rooms and completing a survey to win a Barton swag pack.

The fair can be accessed at&nbsp;<a href="https://careerfair.bartonccc.edu/">careerfair.bartonccc.edu</a>.&nbsp;

Program instructors across the institution have worked to provide content for the virtual fair, which features 28 career and academic programs. Coordinator of Community Education Karly Little said the fair is a great way for students to get exposure to a lot of different possible career paths at once.&nbsp; “The Virtual Career Fair is about giving students a glimpse into career options they’re excited about and options they don’t yet know exist,” she said.&nbsp; “If we can get a student excited about a career program that’s a good fit for them, we’re achieving our mission.”

Bond issue the topic of special school board meeting in Ellis

BUNKER HILL — "The Kansas Legislature," a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature state Sen. Rick Billinger, R-Goodland; state Rep. Troy Waymaster, R-Bunker Hill; and state Rep. Steven Howe, R- Salina, at 7 p.m. Friday.

"The Kansas Legislature" is a program that takes place during the legislative session and gives the legislators and viewers the opportunity to discuss up-to-date issues.  During the program, viewers can call 1-800-337-4788 with their legislative questions. "The Kansas Legislature" is hosted by Becky Kiser, news reporter for Hays Post and Eagle Radio of Hays.

TOPEKA -&nbsp;Washburn University has announced its fall 2021 Dean's List honorees. To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must be enrolled in 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 3.4 to 3.99.

More than 850 students qualified for the Dean's List.&nbsp;

Washburn University is pleased to announce its President's List honorees for the fall 2021 semester. To qualify for the President's List, a student must complete at least 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 4.0.

Almost 750 students qualified for the President's List.

BUNKER HILL – Another live production from Smoky Hills PBS, "The Kansas Legislature," will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday.&nbsp; Streaming will also be available via <a href="http://bit.ly/StreamSmokyHillsPBS">YouTube.</a>

The show airs during the legislative session, which gives the legislators and viewers the opportunity to discuss up-to-date issues.&nbsp; For each show, legislators from the Smoky Hills PBS viewing area are invited to participate in the live call-in program, and viewers are encouraged to call in with their legislative questions.

Eagle's Kiser will moderate new season of 'The Kansas Legislature'

The Hays Symphony will be presenting a Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in the Fort Hays State University Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Brian Buckstead, Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at FHSU.

The concert features Sergei Prokofiev’s&nbsp;Symphony No. 1, Igor Stravinsky’s&nbsp;Pulcinella Suite, and conductor Brian Buckstead as violin soloist on Max Richter’s&nbsp;The Four Seasons Recomposed.

The Symphony No. 1 in D major, Op. 25, also known as the "Classical" was Sergei Prokofiev's first numbered symphony.&nbsp; Prokofiev composed this work as a modern reinterpretation of the classical style of Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The symphony follows the standard four-movement format but is much shorter in length than the symphonies of the classical period.

Stravinsky’s&nbsp;Pulcinella Suite&nbsp;was written for Les Ballet Russes and began a new compositional trend for the composer. The Suite is a shortened version of the ballet with the instrumental passages replacing the singing roles. Stravinsky believed that “Pulcinella&nbsp;was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible.”&nbsp; In&nbsp;Pulcinella, Stravinsky weaves the charm of the classical style with the harmonic and rhythmic energy of twentieth century compositional techniques.

Max Richter’s&nbsp;The Four Seasons Reimagined&nbsp;will feature Dr. Brian Buckstead as the violin soloist. The musical themes of the original Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi are familiar to the general public through popular culture. Excerpts can be heard on the soundtrack of The&nbsp;Simpsons,&nbsp;the Secret Life’s of Pets, Disney’s&nbsp;Fantasia&nbsp;andMuzak. Max Richter says, “it's everywhere. For me, in this project I’m trying to reclaim the piece, to fall in love with it again." Richter takes Vivaldi’s opening theme and creates a loop to engage the listener into the current musical trend of dance music and bring classical sentiments into the 21st&nbsp;century.

Buckstead is Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Fort Hays State University, as well as director of the Hays Symphony. He enjoys a thriving career as a violinist, violist and conductor.&nbsp;Buckstead is passionate about the education of young musicians. In addition to adjudicating local and national music competitions, he co-developed Bring Back the Music, an initiative to bring string instrument education to two underprivileged public schools in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

The post-concert reception is sponsored by a generous donation from the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau.

All Hays Symphony concerts are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance on the symphony’s website (<a href="http://hayssymphony.org/">hayssymphony.org</a>). TMP-M Pop Singers dinner show set for next month

U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, M.D., will hold a public town hall at 8 a.m. Feb. 5 at the&nbsp;Hays Public Library. The public is invited to attend the town hall to learn about federal legislative issues and ask questions of the senator.&nbsp;

“I look forward to the opportunity to speak with Kansans and learn more about the issues and concerns impacting their lives,”&nbsp;Marshall said.&nbsp;“I value the opportunity to hear directly from folks in Ellis County so that I can take their stories and concerns with me when I return to Washington, D.C.”

Marshall's visit is part of the Hays Chamber's Legislative Coffee series.

Russell rolls out mass notification system

The Hays Eagles Baseball organization has announced its merger with the Hays Baseball Club, effective Feb. 1.

The merger will combine the best of the area's youth baseball talent (ages 8u -14u) with the best of its high school talent (ages 15 to 19). 

There are currently 10 teams associated with the Hays Baseball Club. After increasing interest in the past two years, the Hays Eagles last year expanded to three teams —&nbsp;two junior clubs (ages 15 to 17) and a senior team (ages 17 to 19). 

The Hays Eagles will have player evaluations next month to prepare for the upcoming season and determine the number of teams for 2022. 

Evaluations will be Feb. 26 at Premier Indoor Training (PIT). Freshman and sophomores are expected to try out at 1 p.m., and juniors and seniors are expected to try out at 3 p.m.

The Hays Eagles will continue to operate as an independent board under the umbrella of the Hays Baseball Club and will make all decisions regarding coaching and scheduling. All currently scheduled fundraising activities for both organizations will continue as planned, including the popular Cash Bash promotion and a new golf tournament scheduled for May.

The move follows the Eagles' departure from their longtime affiliation with the American Legion baseball program.

Celebration Community Church will host the Night to Shine Hays Shine Thru Parade from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. Saturday in downtown Hays.

Due to COVID concerns, instead of the traditional dance, participants will load up in cars and join a parade down Main Street.

Residents are encouraged to line main and cheer on the participants as they pass in their decorated vehicles.

Night to Shine is an event that is centered on God’s love for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, ages 14 and older. More than 100 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from northwest Kansas will be honored at this year’s Night to Shine Hays event.

"Our team is really excited to be hosting this event in downtown Hays for the second year in a row," said Brent Kaiser, local organizer. "Being in downtown Hays adds a unique and fun aspect to this wonderful event.

"We really hope to see lots of people lining the sidewalks and cheering on Main Street. Last year, our honored guests were so excited to see everyone cheering for them as they the cruised up and down Main."

This year, Night to Shine will celebrate its eighth anniversary as thousands from around the world will come together to honor those with disabilities.

Though this year will look a little different, nothing can keep faith, hope and love from shining as bright as ever, a news release said.

This&nbsp;Western Plains Arts Association program&nbsp;is&nbsp;POSTPONED to&nbsp;Sunday, March 20, 3&nbsp;p.m. for the public performance in Quinter and&nbsp;Monday, March 21, for the student presentations.&nbsp; All performances will be held in the Quinter High School Auditorium.

Details of the rescheduled program will be announced closer to the postponed date.

The next WPAA program, New Odyssey Guy, is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20, at the Sharon Springs High School Auditorium.

No school for Hays USD 489, TMP schools

Camdyn Darrah is a 13-year-old Hays girl who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma.

 Styles Dance Center is putting on a benefit concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center with all proceeds to go to Camdyn and her family. Admission will be a freewill donation. 

Doors will open at 5 p.m. The event will include special guests from DSNWK.

VICTORIA — Heartland Community Foundation invites the public to a&nbsp;Strategic Doing&nbsp;event for the redevelopment of the St. John's Rest Home building, from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Victoria VFW, 204 E. Main. 

This meeting is for community members interested in being involved in the redevelopment of the St. John's Rest Home building, and for those interested in creating something new for Victoria and Ellis County. 

The forum will be facilitated by the Heartland Community Foundation and Betty Johnson, a consultant with the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. Refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday Strategic Doing event will focus on Victoria rest home

BUNKER HILL — "Doctors on Call," a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature Dr. Brandon Weidenhaft with Big Creek Vet Service in Hays.&nbsp; This episode will air at 7 p.m. Tuesday&nbsp;and will focus on pet health.

"Doctors on Call" is a program that provides medical information on a variety of different topics. Medical professionals from throughout the state travel to Bunker Hill to provide information and answer questions from the viewing audience. The doctors selected each week have expertise in the topic chosen for that program. Questions can be called in during the show or emailed prior to the broadcast.&nbsp;&nbsp;
