BATON ROUGE, La. — Pamela Baumfalk of Hays, Kansas, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Baumfalk was initiated at Fort Hays State University.

Baumfalk is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

MANHATTAN — Public hearings will be conducted in western Kansas on July 26 and 27 to consider the proposed renewal of two Local Enhanced Management Area (LEMA) management plans in the region. The hearings by the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) Division of Water Resources will provide the opportunity for in-person oral statements, and written comments may be submitted prior to the hearings.

A LEMA is a tool that allows local groundwater management districts (GMDs) to set goals and corrective control measures to aid in water conservation.

The Sheridan 6 LEMA was established in a designated area in Sheridan and Thomas counties in 2013 and extended in 2017. 

The GMD 4 LEMA was established in a designated area in Cheyenne, Decatur, Rawlins, Gove, Graham, Logan, Sheridan, Sherman, Thomas and Wallace counties in 2018.

For both LEMAs, the plans for proposed renewal were previously submitted to the chief engineer by GMD No. 4 and were found to be acceptable for further consideration.

The chief engineer will serve as the presiding officer at both hearings and will consider the effectiveness of the current LEMA plans’ provisions in meeting those plans’ stated goals. The chief engineer will also consider whether conditions within the LEMA boundaries continue to warrant the designation of a LEMA and whether the corrective controls proposed by the LEMA plans are in the public interest, and will ultimately determine whether the LEMA plans should be renewed as proposed.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for&nbsp;the city of Smith Center public water supply system.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on July 9 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a water line break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and result in bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum’s Continuing Education Program is excited to have representational landscape painter of the west and Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, David Vollbracht,&nbsp;who will&nbsp;teach a 3-day oil painting workshop at the Hansen Museum&nbsp;on&nbsp;July&nbsp;14, 15, &amp; 16, 2022. During this workshop, David will demonstrate oil painting techniques and teach students to enhance their personal painting style with composition, color, and brushwork. &nbsp;Students will explore design, colors, values, and composition as well as the more elusive elements of mood, passion, and attitude.&nbsp;

Mr. Vollbracht earned his art degree from Fort Hays State University. David’s art reflects the quality of light, nature, and spirit drawn from the land. David emphasizes the beauty and importance of the natural landscape in his compositions. The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin work on a pair of road construction projects in Gove and Logan counties starting Tuesday.

In Gove County, crews will be completing a mill and overlay on 15 miles of K-23 starting at the south city limits in Gove and ending at the Sheridan County line. The project area will also include the K-23 alternate through Grainfield and K-23 spur.

Crews will also mill and overlay 26 miles of U.S. 40 in Logan County. Work will begin at the Wallace County line and extend east to the east K-25 junction.

Traffic will be directed through both work zones by flaggers and a pilot car operation. Delays up to 15 minutes should be anticipated.

KDOT expects the projects to be completed by the end of August, weather permitting.

The primary contractor for the Gove County project is APAC Kansas Inc. Shears Division, of Hutchison, with a total contract cost of approximately $3.5 million. Venture Corp. of Great Bend is the primary contractor for the nearly $3.8 million Logan County project.

Seventh.&nbsp;The&nbsp;free cancer screenings&nbsp;are&nbsp;hosted by&nbsp;Hays&nbsp;Masonic Lodge No.&nbsp;195, Masonic&nbsp;Cancer Alliance, and The University of Kansas Cancer Center.&nbsp;This community outreach event is free and open to the public. No appointments are necessary to participate in the screening event.

Lodge members and staff from&nbsp;MCA&nbsp;are teaming up with&nbsp;health&nbsp;professionals&nbsp;from&nbsp;the&nbsp;University of Kansas Medical Center to provide&nbsp;health&nbsp;services that include:

FORT LARNED — A weekend July Fourth celebration will be July 2 to 4 at Fort Larned National Historic Site.

For soldiers and civilians at remote frontier posts celebrating our nation’s birthday was a yearly highlight.&nbsp; Being far from home made the holiday especially poignant.&nbsp;

To celebrate this year’s Fourth of July, Fort Larned is presenting special programs all weekend starting on Saturday, July 2,&nbsp;through Monday July 4. Living history demonstrations and presentations will be ongoing throughout each day, but there will also be special scheduled programs each day.&nbsp;

Adams Brown launches new website

NATOMA — The endeavor to bring the life and times of the Hackerott family, who immigrated from Germany to America in 1842, became a reality with the annual Hackerott Heritage Family Reunion.

The first weekend in June, 25 descendants traveled from across the nation for the 61st-annual celebration in Natoma.

Nestled in Paradise Valley along Paradise Creek, the thriving agricultural community in Osborne County gives a unique sense of place in the historical background of three Hackerott siblings’ perseverance and rugged individualism in taming the prairie during the Kansas Homestead Movement.

Traveling by oxen-drawn wagon, August Hackerott and his family arrived in Osborne County in 1872 following statehood.

A sister, Lisette (Hackerott) Pfortmiller, her husband John Henry, and children joined them in 1877; a brother Ernest Hackerott and his family in 1878.

A Saturday tour guided by Mary Ann and Roger Beisner gave insight through personal stories while experiencing the original sites of homesteads, farms, ranches and cemeteries.

In the late afternoon, the Beisners hosted refreshments in their Victorian home built by Edward Hackerott in 1904. 

Documentation revealed the Hackerotts dedication and determination to carve out a life on the High Plains undeterred by extreme weather conditions, toil in breaking sod, pestilence, danger, and illness.

On Sunday, a social hour gave time to review albums of historical data, photographs, maps, and stories contained in the Hackerott Heritage Book I, II, and III compiled by Mary Ann and Roger Beisner, and their son, Brian Beisner. Information from the past and present continues to add threads to the rich tapestry of their heritage.&nbsp;

Orville Pfortmiller, 93, blessed the family by reciting Numbers 6:24-26. “The Lord bless thee, and keep thee: The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” All joined in the German Common Prayer.

A dinner by K &amp; W Caterers, who are Hackerott descendants, was followed by the family’s annual meeting.

Mary Ann Beisner gave updates of 28 births, 11 marriages and 15 deaths. Veterans and current active military were recognized. Gratitude was given to the dedication of the Kansas farmer. 

Orville Pfortmiller, Korean War veteran and retired farmer, was recognized as the eldest in attendance at 93. Married the longest for 65 years are Roger and Mary Ann Beisner. Traveling the greatest distances: Bob Hackerott, New Hampshire; Carol and Jim Hamm, Texas; Yvette and Ben Smith, Texas.

Hays student recognized as high academic achiever at McPherson College 

RUSSELL — The next art show at the Deines Cultural Center opens on Sunday with a reception from 2-4 p.m.. This special invitational show celebrates the warm breezes, wild flowers, and green pastures of the season. 

Fourteen Kansas artists have contributed their expressions of summer. 

Paintings, mixed media, ceramics, and jewelry is shown by artists Krystal Barnes, David Friday,&nbsp;Tracy Hanzlick, Mick Jilg, Hays,&nbsp;Joyce Jilg, Hays, Robert Joy, Cally Krallman, Kathleen Kuchar, Hays, Cal Mahin, Angela Muller, Barbara Stevens, Nicole Thibodeau, and Shannon Trevethan can be see at the Deines Cultural Center June 26th&nbsp;through August 3rd.

This special invitational show celebrates the warm breezes, wild flowers, and green pastures of the season. Fourteen Kansas artists have contributed their expressions of summer. TOPEKA - The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) requests comments on an amendment to the FFY 2022-2025 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) document.&nbsp;

The STIP is a project specific publication that lists all KDOT administered projects, regardless of funding source, and includes projects for counties and cities as well as projects on the State Highway System. In addition to this list of projects is the July Administrative Narrative Modification (#4) for updates that have occurred in the Public Information and Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Programs narrative sections of the STIP.&nbsp;
