The Kansas Department of Transportation began work on a resurfacing project on a portion of K-383 in Decatur County starting the week of July 25.

Project work will involve a mill and overlay on 15 miles of the highway starting at the U.S. 83 junction and ending at the south city limits in Jennings. Traffic will be reduced to one lane and directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car. Delays up to 15 minutes should be anticipated.

KDOT expects the project to be completed by the end of August, weather permitting.

Venture Corp. of Great Bend is the primary contractor for the nearly $3.9 million project.&nbsp;

city streets. See map above. Seal coat is spray applied in two coats with a dry time of 2 to 3 
hours per pass, so the streets being sealed will be temporarily closed

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to
 be moved from the street by 8 a.m. &nbsp;Streets being sealed will be 
closed from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. &nbsp;Access can be achieved
 in cases of emergency. &nbsp;Parking on adjacent streets is recommended 
during the daytime. &nbsp;Parking in driveways is OK if you DO NOT plan on 
moving the vehicle between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. &nbsp;The Seal Coat treatment
 should not be driven on until it has set up (dried). &nbsp;It will stain 
surfaces such as concrete, carpet, or flooring if tracked from 
construction areas. Please have all lawn watering devices turned off 
the evening before the scheduled date. Please help keep the streets 
clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project. Traffic control will be 
set in areas of work being completed and picked up by the end of the

Hold the library in the palm of your hand! With a new mobile app, Hays Public Library patrons have access to a variety of library resources through their mobile phones and tablets. The library will launch the app on Monday.

Through the app, patrons are able to search the library’s catalog and view materials, place items on hold, make Interlibrary Loan requests, view the event calendar, and suggest purchases. The app will access digital content on Overdrive, allowing patrons to read or listen to books directly from this app. For digital materials available on Hoopla, the app will redirect to the Hoopla website or the Hoopla app, if already installed. The app also allows management of multiple library cards.

The app is powered by myLIBRO. To install it, download myLIBRO through the Google Play or Apple App Stores. Then enter your library card number and PIN, which is the last four digits of the library card number, and you are all set.

High Plains Mental Health Center, in cooperation with the federal department of Health and Human Services, will host a farm stress listening tour on July 28. The event will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn convention center, 221 W. 43rd. 

The event is a stop on the National Tour to Strengthen Mental Health and is open to the public. Officials with the federal government will be present to hear from a panel of local residents who work in the agribusiness industry. Topics of discussion will include farm/agriculture stress and challenges facing rural health care services and accessibility.&nbsp;

The event will center around a panel discussion consisting of regional health care workers, local farmers and agriculture producers, and professionals who work in the agribusiness industry. There also will be a presentation by the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services to provide current state-level statistics and resources. There will be a time for questions and media availability following the panel discussion.

“We are pleased to bring this event to northwest Kansas and are glad the federal government is paying attention to the issues of farm stress and rural mental health as they consider federal funding and policy to meet increased needs and challenges,” said Walt Hill, executive director of High Plains Mental Health Center. “We want to thank our 10 local panelists for being willing to share their time and their voices to raise awareness of these issues.”

Panelists will include representatives from High Plains Mental Health Center, First Care Clinic, Kansas Farm Bureau, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Fort Hays State University, K-State Research and Extension/Cottonwood District and The Animal Hospital, in addition to several local farmers, producers and agronomists.&nbsp;

The Department of HHS began the National Tour to Strengthen Mental Health in March to address mental health challenges that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, including substance use, youth mental health and suicide. The stop in Hays will focus on challenges unique to rural areas and agriculture producers. Farming and ranching are known to be stressful occupations due in part to so many factors producers cannot control, such as climate, market prices and high start-up costs.&nbsp;

Attendees will include: Joseph Palm, Regional Director, HHS Intergovernmental and External Affairs; Kimberly Nelson, Regional Administrator of Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration; Nancy Rios, Regional Administrator of Health Resources and Services Administration; Nickolas Clasen, HHS Intergovernmental &amp; External Affairs; and Christy Davis, Kansas State Director of USDA Rural Development.

LOGAN - The Hansen Museum announce sits 7th Annual 5K Run/2 Mile Walk, held in conjunction with the 48th Annual Arts &amp; Crafts Fair on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at the Hansen Museum in Logan, KS. 

Entry fees are $20.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth 15 and younger. All fees will be donated to Phillips County Hospice Services.

Check-in and T-shirt pick up start at 7:00 a.m. on the corner of Douglas and Main Street in front of the museum. The 5K run will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the 2-mile walk to follow at 8:15 a.m. 

Paid registrations received by August 5th receive a free T-shirt. Prizes awarded to each divisions’ top male and female finishers (5K Run $25.00 in Hansen Bucks and 2 Mile Walk $10.00 in Hansen Bucks), and top three in each division will receive a medal.

KAYS Summer Music Showdown underway

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a field survey for a proposed bridge improvement project on U.S. 40 in Logan County the week of July 18.

The bridge, which spans the North Fork Smoky Hill River, is located approximately 8.5 miles east of the Wallace County line. Survey activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects work to be complete in early September.&nbsp;

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed. Ron Feldkamp, land survey manager, will oversee the survey for KDOT.&nbsp;

Oilers
 Cheerleading Registration is Open.




Since 2018, Oilers Cheerleading has been a youth organization in Hays.

 They welcome all children, ranging from first through sixth grade.

These cheerleaders cheer for the Hays Oilers traveling football home 
games. In the Oilers Cheerleading Program, cheerleaders learn cheers, 
cheer counts, stunts, dances, jumps and performance material. Along 
with this, they will learn sharpness and motion techniques.

The Oilers 
Cheerleaders are known for their unique pom performances, ripples, 
sharpness, loudness, and fullness of high energy and spirit. 




What makes the Oiler squad unique is that they are the only youth 
cheerleading organization in Hays that offers their cheerleaders the 
opportunity to cheer at football games. By doing this, your child will 
experience the fun of authentic cheerleading.

This year, their 
cheerleaders will host fundraisers, have a cheer camp with Hays High, 
cheer at games, participate in parades, and perform. The Oilers 
Cheerleaders are coached by Jenny Linenberger and Holly Linenberger.

They are looking forward to the season and are very excited for all that
 they have planned.

 Cheerleading Registration is Open.


Since 2018, Oilers Cheerleading has been a youth organization in Hays. They welcome all children, ranging from first through sixth grade.These cheerleaders cheer for the Hays Oilers traveling football home 
games. In the Oilers Cheerleading Program, cheerleaders learn cheers, 
cheer counts, stunts, dances, jumps and performance material. Along 
with this, they will learn sharpness and motion techniques.The Oilers 
Cheerleaders are known for their unique pom performances, ripples, 
sharpness, loudness, and fullness of high energy and spirit. 


What makes the Oiler squad unique is that they are the only youth 
cheerleading organization in Hays that offers their cheerleaders the 
opportunity to cheer at football games. By doing this, your child will 
experience the fun of authentic cheerleading.This year, their 
cheerleaders will host fundraisers, have a cheer camp with Hays High, 
cheer at games, participate in parades, and perform. The Oilers 
Cheerleaders are coached by Jenny Linenberger and Holly Linenberger.They are looking forward to the season and are very excited for all that

Seal coat is spray applied in two coats with a dry time of two to three hours per pass, so the streets being sealed will be temporarily closed during this time. 

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to be moved from the street by 8 a.m. Streets being sealed will be closed from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Access can be achieved in cases of emergency. Parking on adjacent streets is recommended during the daytime. Parking in driveways is OK if you do not plan on moving the vehicle between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. 

The seal coat treatment should not be driven on until it has set up (dried). It will stain surfaces such as concrete, carpet, or flooring if tracked from construction areas. 

Please have all lawn watering devices turned off the evening before the scheduled date. Please help keep the streets clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project.

Traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed and picked up by the end of the work day.  Notification of adjacent properties will be made door to door 24 hours in advance of the work.

The Hays Area Planning Commission is scheduled to conduct a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Monday for a rezoning request from the city of Hays.

The&nbsp; city purchased the additional property  at 1732 W. 41st Street around a city water well and booster&nbsp;station several years ago with future development of a fire station in mind.&nbsp;

The property has always been in agriculture production and is currently zoned A-L Agriculture
District. The request is to change the zoning to P-I Public and Institutional District.

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started a field survey for proposed improvements on a portion of K-27 in Wallace County.

The survey is for proposed pavement reconstruction and shoulder widening on approximately 5.5 miles of K-27 from Zigzag Road to the Sherman County line. Crews will also be surveying three bridges along the project corridor.

Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects work to be complete by the end of December.

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed.&nbsp;

BUNKER HILL– This summer Smoky Hills PBS is working with public libraries throughout central and western Kansas to conduct summer reading programs through the Share a Story project. 

This year’s theme is Oceans of Possibilities.

Share a Story is a 45-60 minute program geared toward children ages 2-7. Each program consists of the following format:

1. Read a book by Wild Kratts – “Wild Sea Creatures: Sharks, Whales, and Dolphins”

2. View a show related to the book – “Wild Kratts Stuck on Sharks” (approx. 20 minutes)

Each participant receives his or her own book and related materials.

Share a Story helps children become better readers by inspiring adults to read to children every day. Research shows that activities like these do make a difference. Children who are read to every day, from birth on, do better in school, become good listeners and writers, and have better language, critical and imaginative skills.

Simple, fun daily activities like reading aloud, storytelling, rhyming, singing, exercise, drawing, and acting, teach young children language and literacy skills – and that’s what Smoky Hills PBS Share a Story is all about!

KANSAS CITY, Kan.&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is currently accepting applications for 2022-2023 “Special Hunts” – hunts conducted on lands not normally open to unrestricted hunting, which include select KDWP-managed properties, refuges, Walk-in Hunting Access areas, city and county properties, and other locations. KDWP’s Special Hunts also limit the number of participants to ensure a quality experience or to achieve specific management goals, such as herd reduction.

This fall and winter, more than 370 special hunting opportunities will be held on the following properties:

Hunters have the option to apply in four categories, including youth, mentor, disabled, and open hunts. Youth hunts require parties to include at least one youth who must be accompanied by an adult mentor, and the adult(s) may not hunt. Mentor hunts are open to both youth and/or inexperienced (novice) hunters who are each supervised by a licensed adult mentor, during which time both the novice and mentor may hunt. Disabled hunts are designed for individuals with disabilities. And lastly, open hunts are available to all persons, with no age or experience restrictions.

Hunters should note, prior to applying, that KDWP’s Special Hunts program only provides access to properties; Licenses, permits, tags, stamps, and Hunter Education are still required, unless exempt.&nbsp;

KDWP’s Licensing staff will draw applications for fall and winter special hunts on Aug. 8 (for hunts taking place in September/October 2022), Sept. 26 (for hunts taking place in November/December 2022) and again on Dec. 12 (for hunts taking place in January/February 2023).

ability to acquire one, for our oilfield wireline company. ELI would 
also consider helping the right people obtain a CDL license. The job 
will require rigging for wireline operations.&nbsp;

Applicants should 
be able to work outdoors and have the ability to lift 75 pounds. Typical
 40-hour work week with overtime in peak season. Some weekend work and 
occasional travel out of state is required. Light maintenance, cleaning 
and mechanical work of vehicles &amp; equipment is also involved. 24/7 
on-call rotation is also a requirement of this position.
