BUNKER HILL — This summer Smoky Hills PBS is working with public libraries throughout central and western Kansas to conduct summer reading programs through the Share a Story project.  This year’s theme is Oceans of Possibilities.

Share a Story is a 45-60 minute program geared toward children ages 2-7.  Each program consists of the following format:

1.      Read a book by Wild Kratts – “Wild Sea Creatures:  Sharks, Whales, and Dolphins”

2.      View a show related to the book – “Wild Kratts Stuck on Sharks”  (approx. 20 minutes)

Each participant receives his or her own book and related materials. 

Share a Story helps children become better readers by inspiring adults to read to children every day.  Research shows that activities like these do make a difference.  Children who are read to every day, from birth on, do better in school, become good listeners and writers, and have better language, critical and imaginative skills.

Simple, fun daily activities like reading aloud, storytelling, rhyming, singing, exercise, drawing, and acting, teach young children language and literacy skills – and that’s what Smoky Hills PBS Share a Story is all about!

Smoky Hills PBS Share a Story hits local libraries this summer

The United Way of Ellis County has announced its 2022 Campaign Logo Contest.  

Design a lasting work of art by entering the United Way of Ellis County’s 2022 Campaign Logo/Theme Contest.  The agency is excited to offer people of all ages the opportunity to submit designs that are inspired by the mission, focus, and vision of the United Way.

The winner’s design will become the official 2022 Campaign Logo/Theme and will be used for all campaign marketing material, social media and advertising.

Submissions are due by June 17 by website or email. For official rules and guidelines, visit <a href="http://www.liveunited.us/campaign-logo-contest">www.liveunited.us/campaign-logo-contest</a>.

Five finalists will be chosen and then will be voted on by the public via social media from June 27 to July 6.

United Way announces campaign logo contest

If you have a child or children that will be entering the Fall 2022 school year as a 3rd through 6th grader, registration is now open to have your child join the Hays Oilers football teams. If your child or children are in the USD 489 or Holy Family/TMP school system, they should have received a registration form at school.

Registration deadline is July 8th, 2022. Early bird registration is open now and can be mailed and postmarked on or before June 17th, 2022 for registration discounts.

The Hays Oilers is a Hays area youth tackle football program having multiple teams in 3 age divisions, 3rd/4th, 5th, and 6th grade. The Hays Oilers compete in the Pride of Kansas Football League, PKFL. League deadlines for teams and rosters are posted on the PKFL website as well as all other information related to the league. Games set to begin in early September and run through October. 6 regular season games followed by the Tournament of Champions playoffs. Most playoff games are held at FHSU.

This is a tremendous opportunity for your child to learn and to develop skills to play and participate in the ultimate team sport of tackle football. The values and work ethic learned here will carry beyond the playing field.

Hays Oilers Youth Football registration announced

In response to a request made by the City of Hays, the Kansas 
Department of Agriculture’s Division of Water Resources has issued a 
control order restricting the watering of lawns and other vegetation 
from private wells between noon and 7 p.m. from June 1 through 
Sept. 30.&nbsp;

Holly Dickman, Hays water conservation specialist, has the details.

This
 measure is part of a greater interest to reduce water waste and to 
improve conservation practices in the Intensive Groundwater Use Control 
Area located in Hays.&nbsp;

The
 IGUCA in Hays was established in 1985 at the request of the City to 
help implement water conservation measures. It provides a mechanism to 
address preventable water waste by privately-owned wells.&nbsp;

Currently,
 the City of Hays prohibits the following year-round: 

* The washing down 
of sidewalks, parking lots and driveways. * The known loss of water 
through breaks or leaks in plumbing systems. *&nbsp;The escape of water from private property onto public property such as sidewalks or into the street guttering from landscape irrigation.

The above practices are <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/565/Water-RulesRestrictions">prohibited</a>, in addition to outdoor 
water use by city well customers between noon and 7 p.m. from June 1 through Sept.
 30.

By 
restricting daytime outdoor water use, including the watering of 
landscapes and gardens, unnecessary water loss due to wind and 
evaporation can be reduced, thus conserving the resource for more 
efficient use.

All 
citizens are encouraged to practice the conservation of natural 
resources, including water, and look for ways to improve conservation 
measures in our homes and businesses, both indoors and out.

The Kansas Department of Transportation expects to begin work on a reconstruction project on approximately 11 miles of U.S. 281 in Russell County the week of May 23.

The project will widen the roadway to a 30-foot paved surface with 3-foot turf shoulders, starting near Land Road and extending north to the west K-18 junction. The box bridge structure over Boswell Creek will also be replaced.

Work will be phased across three construction seasons with most activity occurring off road during 2022 and 2023. Daily lane closures may be necessary at times, and traffic will be directed by flaggers. KDOT plans to close the highway during the 2024 construction season with an anticipated reopening in mid-October 2024. The project is expected to be completed in early 2025.

The 11-mile portion is the final part of the delayed T-WORKS project to rehabilitate and reconstruct the U.S. 281 corridor between Russell and K-18. KDOT completed reconstruction of the first 4 miles from 15th&nbsp;Street in Russell to Land Road in late 2021.

Free children's summer lunch program to start May 31

UNIVERSITY, MS - Ashley Smith, of Hays, KS, is among the more than 3,300 students who earned their degrees from the University of Mississippi in May 2022.

Smith, who majored in art, received a master of fine arts from the graduate school.

May 2022 graduates were invited to walk across the stage at the&nbsp;University of Mississippi 169th Commencement exercises, which were held by individual colleges and schools May 4-8. The university-wide morning convocation was held on Saturday, May 7 in the Grove, with UM alumnus Bradford Cobb, a celebrated music industry executive, giving the keynote address.

Hays student named to Southern New Hampshire University President's List

The Larks Alumni will play the Old Fort Hays Post 9 team in a vintage baseball game at 7 p.m. on June 1 at Larks Park.

Admission is free, but fans are encouraged to bring canned food items to help stock the shelves at the Community Assistance Center.

Low collection for food drive, center needs community support

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of McCracken public water supply system located in Rush County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of chlorine residual due to an equipment malfunction. Failure to maintain an adequate chlorine residual may lead to bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of McCracken indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

KDHEThe Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the city of McCracken public water supply system located in Rush County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of chlorine residual due to an equipment malfunction. Failure to maintain an adequate chlorine residual may lead to bacterial contamination.Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. KDHE: Boil order rescinded for McCracken

Those who have ever thought about learning to fly can find out more on Thursday as Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1655 hosts its second “Fly Now” informational program on learning to become a pilot. Attendees will be able to register for a free introductory training flight sponsored by Hays Aircraft. 

EAA Chapter 1655 is a local organization that is part of the national Experimental Aircraft Association. The group is dedicated to growing participation in aviation by sharing the ways people can get started in this fun and fulfilling recreation and career. 

The program will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thirsty’s Event Center, just off of 27th and Vine in Hays.

“Our first 'Fly Now' program was so successful, our room was overflowing, but it was exciting to see all the interest in flying and becoming a pilot," Chapter President Gary Shorman said.

Anyone interested in aviation is invited to attend. Local pilots will be on hand to discuss why and how they learned to fly. The meeting also will cover the steps and requirements for becoming a pilot, provide tips on how to make it economical, and provide information on how you can get started.

 If you think piloting your own plane, soaring over the plains, might be fun … just wait till you get behind the control stick.

The Hays Chapter of the EAA is one of about 900 chapters around the world, which provide activities for local aviation enthusiasts with a mission of growing participation in aviation by sharing “The Spirit of Aviation.”

Chapter activities range from monthly meetings to airport open houses, fly-ins, educational programs, and special events that share aviation with the community and build a stronger bond between local aviation and the public.

HAYS – It’s not too late for Hays area high school students to sign up for a week-long musical theater workshop planned in early June.

From June 6-10, incoming freshmen through outgoing college freshmen will create and perform an original musical production during the in-person Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts workshop at Hays High School.

In just five days, participating students will conceive, write, choreograph, compose, design, rehearse and perform an original piece of musical theater in collaboration with a staff of professional artists. Hays students had a previous opportunity to work with&nbsp;Lovewell staff during a song-writing workshop in March.

No previous music or theater experience is required. To make the production come together, the process needs writers, actors, poets, dancers, singers, dreamers, visual artists, musicians, composers, designers, and creative students of ALL kinds.

The first three days of the workshop are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The fourth day is from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the fifth day (performance day) is from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Workshops are also being held in Hoxie, Phillipsburg, Colby, Concordia and Salina during June and July. Students are encouraged to participate in a workshop closest to them. For more information or to register, visit lovewell.org, and click on Apply, and then Kansas.

Program will welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Sandy Seamone to teach
two Joy of Painting classes on June 11th and 12th.&nbsp; On Saturday, June 11th, the
class will paint “Lazy Days,” and on Sunday, June 12th, “The Flag
Eagle.” &nbsp;Classes will be held in the Hansen
Museum Community Room, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long
lunch break each day.

The
Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. &nbsp;Sandy learned from the happy tree guy himself.&nbsp; Implementing the soft-spoken, supportive ways
of her mentor, Sandy creates a classroom with a relaxing and light-hearted
atmosphere.&nbsp; All painting supplies are
provided, and no previous experience is necessary. &nbsp;Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie
of these classes. &nbsp;Students need only
bring a roll of paper towels.

Program will welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Sandy Seamone to teach
two Joy of Painting classes on June 11th and 12th.&nbsp; On Saturday, June 11th, the
class will paint “Lazy Days,” and on Sunday, June 12th, “The Flag
Eagle.” &nbsp;Classes will be held in the Hansen
Museum Community Room, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long
lunch break each day.The
Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. &nbsp;Sandy learned from the happy tree guy himself.&nbsp; Implementing the soft-spoken, supportive ways
of her mentor, Sandy creates a classroom with a relaxing and light-hearted
atmosphere.&nbsp; All painting supplies are
provided, and no previous experience is necessary. &nbsp;Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie
of these classes. &nbsp;Students need only
bring a roll of paper towels. Call

Bob Ross painting classes return to Hansen Museum

PRATT&nbsp;– An angler’s prized catch may actually be worth a prize this spring and summer in Kansas, thanks to the return of the Great Kansas Fishing Derby. This year’s Derby will run May 15 to September 15, 2022. 

During that time, anglers can try their luck at catching one of more than 500 specially tagged fish located in public waterbodies across the Sunflower State. 

The statewide competition is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), Kansas Wildscape Foundation, Bass Pro-Cabela’s Outdoor Fund, Kansas State Fair, Firewater Music Festival, City of Independence, and many local retailers.&nbsp;

“It’s a new year, but our goal remains the same - get people fishing and generate support for communities and nearby waters,” said David Breth, KDWP sportfishing education coordinator. “Participants will be excited to know that we’ve extended this year’s Derby to give anglers more time to win. We also added a few more lakes, and there are more tagged fish."&nbsp;

Pre-registration is not required, and participation is free, though normal fishing license requirements remain in effect. A follow-up communication will notify the angler of what they’ve won and where to claim their prize. Ksfishderby.com will also allow anglers and non-anglers to register to win additional prizes through random drawings.&nbsp;

"Businesses, municipalities, and more are supporting the Great Kansas Fishing Derby by sponsoring many of our prizes, and without their support, the Derby wouldn’t exist,” added Breth. “Thanks to them, anglers can win concert tickets, state fair kid's packs, gift cards to Bass Pro/Cabelas and KDWP, fishing tackle, experiences, cabin stays, and cash this year.”

If that’s not incentive enough, the Derby offers another major prize this year. Every angler who catches and redeems a valid derby tag will be entered into a drawing to win a lifetime hunting and fishing license sponsored by Kansas Wildscape Foundation.&nbsp;

All participating waterbodies are open to the public and managed, in whole or in-part, by KDWP. Also included in the list of participating waters are ponds and lakes currently enrolled in KDWP’s Community Fisheries Assistance Program. By leveraging funding from federal excise taxes on fishing equipment, KDWP leases public access – at no additional cost to the public – to gorgeous waters that once required special county, community or city permits. KDWP: Great Kansas Fishing Derby starts Sunday; more prizes, time extended 

ABILENE - The Symphony at Sunset annual D-Day Commemoration Concert returns to the campus grounds at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum on Saturday, June 4. Several programs are scheduled leading up to the D-Day commemorative concert including the WWII Emerging Scholars Symposium.

Admission to the concert and museum is free all day. 

Concert activities begin at 4 p.m. with Salina-based band Everyday Lights performing at 5:30 p.m., followed by the 1st Infantry Division Band at 7 p.m., and the Salina Symphony takes the stage just as the sun sets around 8:30 p.m. 

Food and beverage vendors open at 4 p.m. No weapons or outside alcohol are permitted on federal property.&nbsp; Small, soft-sided coolers are allowed; however all bags are subject to inspection. Remember to dress for the elements and bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and bug spray!

Guests are invited to arrive early and make time to visit the temporary exhibit Drawn to Combat: Bill Mauldin &amp; the Art of War. This traveling exhibit from Pritzker Military Museum &amp; Library debuts in Abilene on June 4 and runs through November 27. This retrospective of work by two-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, Bill Mauldin, about our nation's time of war, civil rights, and social justice is an absolute must-see.

TOPEKA&nbsp;—&nbsp;This year marks the 26th&nbsp;anniversary of section 529 in the federal tax code, which makes it possible to open a 529 education savings plan. The State of Kansas Treasurer’s Office has planned visits to museums across the state in celebration of this anniversary — culminating with a final event on May 29 to officially recognize 529 Day.

During each visit, the Treasurer and his staff will hand out informational materials about Learning Quest 529 accounts, and participants attending the event will be entered to win a random drawing for $1,000 to establish a Learning Quest 529 account or add the cash to an existing Learning Quest 529 account.

“I encourage Kansans to come visit with me as we are out and about across the state. We want to do our best to make sure that folks know about this opportunity to save for the next step in their education journey. We know that supporting education savings means supporting the future workforce of Kansas,” said&nbsp;Treasurer Lynn Rogers.

With the rising costs of education, Learning Quest 529 saving plans offer Kansas families an opportunity to save for school and enjoy tax benefits, all while reducing the burden of student loan debt. 

Any U.S. citizen or resident may open an account or be a beneficiary. There are no age or income requirements, and anyone can contribute any amount to the accounts up to $435,000. Funds can be used to cover costs of public, private, community, technical, and vocational schools as well as registered apprenticeship programs, and student debt.
