TOPEKA - Registration is now open for the Kansas Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship event, June 16-18 in Leavenworth, Kan. Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship is a unique educational experience for cattle producers featuring low-stress cattle handling demonstrations, Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) educational sessions, facility design sessions and industry updates that you won’t find anywhere else.

“In today’s world, no matter the beef production system you are involved with, stockmanship and stewardship are more important than ever,” said Curt Pate, Stockmanship &amp; Stewardship clinician, and cattle handling expert. “This quality program combines age-old skills with modern practices to improve your bottom line and quality of life.”

The three-day event includes tours, classroom sessions and live cattle demonstrations with hands-on opportunities for attendees. The first day features a half-day tour including visits to Kauffman Stadium, Bichelmeyer Meats and J&amp;N Ranch. The evening concludes with dinner at the Schwinn Farm Barn and a keynote presentation by Ron Wilson, rancher and cowboy poet.

Classroom sessions on day two include topics such as economics, grazing management, importance of mental health, entrepreneurship, marketing concepts as well as a meat cutting demonstration, concluding with dinner and a live band. The final day at Due West Ranch Equestrian Center features stockmanship principles, safety considerations, chuteside demonstrations and a BQA training. The Hays Area Children's Center and Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas are collaborating on&nbsp;a transition process for Part C,&nbsp;Tiny-k services in Ellis County and a portion of Rush County. &nbsp;

Infant-toddler early intervention services are available to infants and toddlers to enhance development and minimize their potential for developmental delays, and to recognize the significant brain development that occurs during the child’s first three years. Intervention services include screenings, home visits, occupational, physical, speech or behavioral therapy and other intervention services.

This home-based service previously provided through the HACC, will officially transition over to DSNWK's Kid-Link services on May 15, 2022. The HACC will continue to operate their daycare services without change at the Children's Center on the FHSU campus. &nbsp;

Both the HACC and DSNWK are working to make this a smooth transition and would like to express our appreciation to all the affected families involved in this Part C,&nbsp;Tiny-k program for their help, patience and understanding as we work together through this transition process. &nbsp;

DSNWK's Kid-Link program has been proudly serving families in several surrounding counties in northwest Kansas including Norton, Phillips, Rooks, Smith, Osborne and Russell since 1976. &nbsp;

Part C Tiny-k services transitioning from HACC to DSNWK

The City of Hays Water Resources Department has contracted with Pro Pipe, Denver, to conduct sewer line cleaning and inspections at the locations shown on the above map. 

Cleaning will begin Monday. Pro Pipe should be completed with the entire project by Friday, July 1.

Pro Pine will perform light cleaning and video inspection of 118,177 linear feet (22 miles) of sanitary sewer with a budget authority not to&nbsp;exceed $140,000. The 2022 program continues the goal of performing cleaning of sanitary&nbsp;sewer lines on a five-year cleaning cycle.&nbsp;

Door hanger notices will be placed on homes and businesses affected prior to cleaning. Work will begin at the north end of the project area and proceed south until completed. 

During this process, residents may experience a rumbling sound, in addition to the possibility of water entering your sink, bathtub and/or toilet. Sewer lines can develop air pressure or a partial vacuum from the cleaning process. If you will not be home or on vacation during this time of sewer line cleaning, please protect your home by keeping your toilet lids down.

Registration open for TMP-M summer camps

Beginning Monday, Mayer Specialty Services, Goddard, will be performing rehabilitation of sanitary sewer manholes at locations in the south part of Hays.  See the map above for locations.

Mayer will rehab 50 manholes&nbsp;not to exceed the budgeted amount of $125,000. Additional manholes for rehabilitation have been identified to the north of the project area.

 Work is expected to take approximately three months. 

 Rehabilitation of sanitary sewer manholes will not affect the sanitary sewer system and customers will see no disruption in service.  Traffic should remain unaffected by this project and traffic control signs will be posted if necessary.

Manhole rehabilitation is generally considered to have a 50 to 60-year lifespan when the&nbsp;right material is properly applied. This project focuses on manholes in high acidic&nbsp;environments and high sewer use lines.

The Department of Water Resources initiated the manhole rehabilitation program in 2018.&nbsp;

The United Way of Ellis County is sponsoring a Tardeada to promote information and cultural sharing with the Hispanic community.

The Tardeada, a Mexican-American term, meaning to party in the afternoon, will be Saturday at the Downtown Pavilion at 10th and Main in Hays. From 4 to 6 p.m., the event will include food, music and information booths. Food, DJ and a dance will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

Immaculate Heart of Mary will have matachine dancers to perform a dance honoring the Feast of the Lady of Guadalupe from 5:30 to 6 p.m.

"The  Tardeada Community Fiesta was created to include the community," said Meleny Jacome, United Way administrative assistant, "but also the Hispanic population to have something there for them, so they can learn about our partner agencies, learn about businesses, learn about services that are available for them. 

"We also wanted to have an event where [Hispanic families] could feel included in the community and have something for them that they could celebrate their culture."

Jacome said the event is open to all people of all ages and is also meant to help the community at-large learn about the Hispanic culture.

Cultural booths, which will also be offered from 4 to 6 p.m., will focus on the culture and history of different Spanish-speaking cultures.

"The goal is to have a more inclusive community that celebrates diversity," Jacome said.

Jacome noted the Hispanic population is the largest minority population in Ellis County. More than 1,700 people in Ellis County identify as Hispanic, according to the 2020 census.

Ten of the United Way partner agencies will be in attendance. Spanish interpreters will be on-hand to help the agencies and businesses share information with Spanish speakers.

"We really want to get people informed about what United Way does and our partner agencies do," Jacome said.

Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will have a raffle for a piñata. Other nonprofits will have donation jars.

Eagle Radio and Hays Post will be at the event answering questions. The company also hopes to demonstrate how users can set preferences on their devices to translate Hays Post into Spanish.

The Hays Convention and Visitor's Bureau and the Wonder Women League will also be on hand.

Taco Riendo will be on location during the entire event. Ten percent of the truck's proceeds from that night will go to the United Way. Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will also be selling Latin food as a fundraiser.

There will be a piñata and face-painting for the children, so parents are encouraged to bring their whole families to attend.

"Come with an open mind and be ready to learn," Jacome said. "It's for both cultures, for the Hispanic culture and the non-Hispanic culture. Be ready to learn about the United Way and what it offers and be ready to learn about different cultures that are here in Hays.

"Be ready to celebrate the minority groups."

Thursday's Hays City Commission meeting canceled

Following the two-year reconstruction project of the north Vine Street corridor in Hays, the south end of Vine Street will get a facelift this year. This project, however, is less extensive and will not have any traffic roundabouts.

Phase 1, Step 1 of the $3.9 million project begins Monday, according to John Braun, Hays project manager.

In 2019, the city was awarded a $1 million grant from the Kansas Dept. of Transportation City Connecting Link Improvement Program to help fund the cost. Hays will pay the remaining $2.9 million using cash from the city commission capital reserve fund.&nbsp;

"This KDOT project will replace the pavement on U.S. Highway 183 from the south city limit at the intersection with the bypass to about 350 feet south of the intersection with 13th Street at the McDonald's entrance," Braun said.

The project includes replacement of the concrete pavement, select areas of curb and gutter, sidewalk ramps, new pedestrian crossings at 8th Street, storm sewer inlet tops, and pavement markings.

The first phase will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction in the outside lanes while the inside lanes are being reconstructed. No left turns will be allowed.

"Access to all businesses will remain but will be restricted to right-in/right-out movements," Braun explained.

Eighth Street will be blocked during this phase allowing only right turns to and from Vine at Eighth.&nbsp;

The project contractor, Smoky Hill Construction of Salina (the same company that did the north Vine project), is to complete the job within 115 working days.

This project, however, is less extensive and will not have any traffic roundabouts.Phase 1, Step 1 of the $3.9 million project begins Monday, according to John Braun, Hays project manager.In 2019, the city was awarded a $1 million grant from the Kansas Dept. of Transportation City Connecting Link Improvement Program to help fund the cost. Hays will pay the remaining $2.9 million using cash from the city commission capital reserve fund.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>The first phase will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction in the outside lanes while the inside lanes are being reconstructed. GREAT BEND — The Shafer Gallery held an opening reception for the BaRTaRT Faculty Student and Staff Exhibition on April 8 and awards were given to Barton students participating in the student art competition.

This year’s guest judge was Ron Michael, director of the Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg. He gave critiques of the award-winning artwork and words of encouragement to the student artists. The exhibit runs through May 13 and also features ceramic art by Michael as well works by Barton faculty and members of the Shafer Gallery staff.

“The hard work of creating and the discipline involved in the production of any work of art finds its culmination in the Gallery,” said Gallery Director Dave Barnes. “A work of art has to be seen to be experienced, to have life and to impact and inspire the world. Without the exhibit, the artist’s work is like a song that is written but never performed. The BaRTaRT exhibit is our way of giving the artists of the Barton community the opportunity to sing loud in a supportive professional art world context. “

TOPEKA – Lieutenant Governor and Commerce Secretary David Toland announced that grant applications are open for the Rural Mural and Public Art program. The Kansas Department of Commerce (KDC) will provide matching funds for communities to create new murals and public art projects that will engage community residents and create a place for the community to gather and enjoy.

“Public art is an important component&nbsp;in the health and vibrancy of communities across our state,”&nbsp;said Lieutenant Governor&nbsp;and Commerce Secretary David Toland. “The Rural Mural and Public Art program&nbsp;will create new destinations that tell the story of a community and inspire pride in residents and visitors to Kansas. All of this enhances quality of life and fuels new growth statewide.”

The program is designed for communities with populations under 10,000 to increase community vibrancy and provide space for artistic expression. Matching funds are available to established 501(c)(3) or 501(c)6 organizations based in Kansas, units of local government or federally recognized tribes.

“By investing in public art and murals, a community can highlight their shared identity, history, and culture, while creating beautiful places the entire region can enjoy,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;Office of Rural Prosperity Director, Trisha Purdon.&nbsp;“We are pleased to partner with communities to support locally-led projects that will develop new destination point murals across rural Kansas.”

The maximum grant amount is $10,000, and there is a 1:1 match requirement for each project. The matching funds must consist of at least 50% cash expense provided by the applicant. In-kind, non-monetary donations and volunteer hours may be counted, up to 50% of the required match.

NATOMA — For God and Country, the Natoma American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 continues the legacy in providing support for veterans, their families, children, youth and community. 

As the Legion Hall is in the final phase of restoration, a light celebration supper provided members a respite for reviewing past projects, recent fire relief for neighbors, updates on active military, and projections for the future. The meeting included the installation of newly elected officers (L-R): Laah Tucker, president, Jenjer Murphy, vice-president, Sheila Hachmeister, 2nd vice-president, Linda Crawford, secretary-treasurer, Shawna Dunlap, Chaplain, Sheri Beisner, Sergeant at arms; Cindy Elliott, Marge Kertz, and Sharon MacConnell, committee chairs.&nbsp; 

Guests for supper after a full day of work in the Hall were Post Commander William Workman, Terry Tucker, and David Kertz. On April 16, the members honored past members Adeline Eickhoff and Mary Murphy with a memorial ceremony and draping of the charter.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

LA CROSSE — La Crosse is gearing up for the 56th annual Barbed Wire Festival May 5 to 7. For over 50 years, people have been traveling from all over the western United States to take part in this unique annual event. This year’s theme is “Sailing into a New Adventure.”

This year’s festival features a special exhibition of “In Search of Earth’s Secrets” in cooperation with Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Funded by the National Science Foundation, In Search of Earth's Secrets allows audiences to enjoy hands-on experience while learning about exciting science topics researched by the JOIDES Resolution such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and the extinction of the dinosaurs. The exhibit will be on display at the Kansas Barbed Wire Museum from May 5-17, 2022.

On Friday, the festivities begin at 8:00am at the La Crosse City Auditorium with displays of antiques and collectibles, crafts items, military displays, and of course, lots of barbed wire related items. The favorite “Tribute to Veterans” will once again be on display with historical military items, some never before seen. Displays will be open until 5:00pm.

Festivities move to the La Crosse Fire Department for the Barbecue and Casino Night at 6:30pm. After enjoying homemade burgers, brats and more, participants receive free “Barbed Bucks” that they can use to play a variety of casino style games. At the end of the evening, participants use their “Barbed Bucks” to purchase items in a fun and exciting live auction. Cost of the meal is $10, but there is no charge to participate in the games. Proceeds support the educational mission of the museum.

Saturday is filled with events for all ages. The auditorium opens at 8:00 am for a second day of displays. For bargain hunters, there will be community garage sales throughout town with maps available at the Festival Registration Desk. At 10:00, “The World Champion Barbed Wire Splicing Contest”™ starts with men’s, ladies’ and youth competitions open to everyone.&nbsp;

Events at the auditorium conclude at 3:00 pm with the Live Fund Raising Auction featuring barbed wire and other collectibles offered to the highest bidder. At 6:30, the festival moves to the La Crosse Country Club for the Evening Banquet featuring live music. A limited number of banquet tickets are available.&nbsp;

The festival concludes on Sunday with a non-denominational church service at 11:00 am in the Grass Park Shelter House across the creek from the museum complex followed by a community picnic sponsored by the La Crosse United Methodist Church.
