Wasinger to appear Friday on 'The Kansas Legislature'

GOODLAND — Northwest Kansas Technical College has announced the names of full-time students who earned spots on the President’s and Dean’s honor lists for the 2022&nbsp;fall&nbsp;semester.

Folds is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Aug. 11 in downtown Salina's Stiefel Theatre, 151 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation.

He's
 created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop 
albums with Ben Folds Five, multiple solo albums, and numerous 
collaborative records.

For over a decade he's performed with some 
of the world's greatest symphony orchestras and currently serves as the 
first-ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra at the 
Kennedy Center.

Folds released his first book - a collection of 
interrelated essays, anecdotes and lessons about art, life and music - 
in 2019, which debuted as a New York Times Best Seller, and he hosted a 
podcast series spinoff of his book titled Lightning Bugs: Conversations

Calling all car fanatics and enthusiasts — Dennis Gage, TV host of "My Classic Car," will be in Salina Feb. 25 at The Garage.&nbsp; His special visit is no coincidence. Gage will be in Salina to celebrate The Garage's first anniversary at the upcoming&nbsp;<a href="https://seama.org/buckled-in-blue-event">Buckled in Blue&nbsp;</a>event.

During the celebration, one lucky winner will go home with a 1966 Ford Thunderbird.

Matthew Miller-Wells, director of education at&nbsp;<a href="https://seama.org/">The Garage</a>, 134 S. Fourth St., said the 1966 Ford Thunderbird was donated by the Lynn Brown&nbsp;estate in 2016.&nbsp;

"The car has been sitting around and we never really knew quite what exactly to do with it. There wasn't an exhibit in mind and no one really wanted it as a company car," Miller-Wells said. "So we said this is a great opportunity to let patrons experience what was known as America's ultimate luxury automobile."

Miller-Wells told Salina Post that the 1966 Ford Thunderbird is&nbsp;set up like a fighter jet. When the driver sits inside, the steering column swings out of the way. The gauges on the dash even look like aviation gauges.

"There are lights and switches that look like you're sitting in a cockpit. You know, yoke controls and all of your buttons," Miller-Wells said. "I've had the opportunity to drive the car around a little bit since Sankeys Automotive here in town helped us kind of resuscitate it, look it over to make sure it's safe for driving. And it is perhaps the nicest road boat I have ever had the pleasure of driving."

"What is really fantastic about that number is our records also indicate that a third of our guests are from outside of Salina. This automotive attraction is bringing people to our community to relive the past and drive the future," Peck said.&nbsp;

Gage grew up on a small family farm in northwestern Illinois. He started tinkering with cars early on. He also played guitar and trumpet in a variety of rock, folk, and school bands. He went to North Central College in Naperville, Ill., where he majored in both chemistry and physics. His undergraduate research in quantum physics received an American Chemical Society award. He continued his automotive interest and, through the course of his college years, owned a number of muscle and sports cars. He also kept up his music, playing in local coffee houses. Gage accepted a position as a product development scientist at The Procter Gamble Company in Cincinnati. There he either worked on, or created, most of PGs food products in the store including Pringles, with which he bears a striking resemblance to the handlebar mustachioed character on the can. Gage holds a number of patents on PG products. Once again having some disposable income, Gage got back to playing with classic cars.

Action will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24, and continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. A rebroadcast of the championship finals will air at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 26.&nbsp;.

'Rooted in Resilience' scheduled this month in Hays

Siny Joseph, professor and graduate faculty at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>,&nbsp;is among a team of five researchers who have been awarded grant funding from the&nbsp;<a href="https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/initiatives/convergence-accelerator" target="_blank">National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator program</a>&nbsp;to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities. Wichita
 State University is leading the $750,000 National Science Foundation, 
or NSF, grant to gather information and create digital maps of indoor 
spaces that could be used by persons with disabilities.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/faculty/bios/joseph-s.html" target="_blank">Joseph</a>&nbsp;is a co-principal investigator on the research team. The
 NSF Convergence Accelerator program selected 16 multidisciplinary teams
 to develop tools and technologies to enhance the quality of life and 
employment access and opportunities for persons with disabilities as 
part of Track H: Enhancing Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. According
 to Wichita State, the creation of MABLE, or Mapping for Accessibility 
in Built Environments, maps through crowdsourcing, experiences, 
observations and robots will help persons with disabilities assess, plan
 and navigate indoor environments with audio and visual information. 
Envisioned users include those with visual or mobility impairments. While
 recent advances in indoor localization technology provide opportunities
 to enable real-time navigation and wayfinding within built 
environments, continued progress has been slowed by the lack of detailed
 and usable accessibility information. The project aims to create a 
community-driven framework and prototypes for information collection, 
processing and analysis for accessible maps, navigating and wayfinding 
development. Joseph's role in the research project will focus on 
creating frameworks for quantifying economic benefits from accessible 
built environments encompassing perspectives of future economic growth 
potential, cost savings and return on investments. Joseph has 
been a faculty member with K-State Salina since 2012. She earned a 
bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a Master of Business 
Administration, specializing in marketing and operations research, from 
institutions in India, and a master's and a doctorate in resource 
economics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was also the recipient of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/today/announcement/?id=85769" target="_blank">2022 McArthur Award</a>&nbsp;for excellence in teaching and research at K-State Salina. The

K-State Research and Extension will be offering a one-day soybean school on Feb. 22 at Great Plains Manufacturing, 1525 E. North St. in Salina. The school will start at 8:30 a.m. with registration and presentations will begin at 9 a.m. The presentations will conclude at 2:30 p.m. with an optional tour of Great Plains Manufacturing immediately following the last presenter. A noon lunch will be provided thanks to sponsorship by the Kansas Soybean Commission.

This event will provide in-depth training targeted for soybean producers and key stakeholders. Some topics that will be covered include crop production practices, soybean breeding update, Kansas&nbsp;Mesonet&nbsp;tools, insect and disease management, and market outlook.

Eighth and Vine signal upgrades will alter traffic flow

The Alumni Association of Thomas More Prep-Marian will sponsor the 49th annual Auction for Christian Education (ACE). From the first auction in 1975 to 2022, ACE has raised $11,868,702.18 for Thomas More Prep-Marian.

This year's auction will be April 28 and 29 at the Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The Hays business community, TMP-Marian parents, alumni, and friends have worked many years together with the Capuchin friars and Agnesian sisters and now the Diocese of Salina to keep the dream of a Catholic educational option alive for Hays, Ellis County, and western Kansas. The ACE 2023 hosts are Dan '64 and Judy '64 Dischner and Glen '67 and Anita Neuburger.

LOGAN — The Wichita Children’s Theatre Professional Touring Company will present “The Three Little Kittens” at the Logan School Auditorium on Thursday, March 9, at 9:30 a.m., and “Yankee Doodle” at 1:30 p.m.

The three little kittens have lost their mittens--but they're not just going to sit around and cry about it! These are definitely not your ordinary house cats. Help the kittens find their mittens and save them from their hideous fate — a time out! The kittens all learn many valuable lessons but the most important is to always tell the truth. The Three Little Kittens is a musical comedy adaptation by Kevin M. Reese based on the popular children’s story.

Yankee Doodle is a musical comedy with a broad sweep of big and little deeds accomplished by men and women whose lives have impacted the United States. Yankee Doodle is a rousing salute to the “movers and shakers” which includes famous as well as forgotten figures and events. This patriotic extravaganza glorifying American achievement is told through a sequence of dramatic vignettes from Paul Revere to Charles Lindbergh, from the creation of the ice cream cone to the beginning of mass-produced Valentines, from the inventions of Thomas A. Edison to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Yankee Doodle is a modern classic that will inspire, inform, and entertain young audiences.

The Wichita Children’s Theatre Professional Touring Company performs from September through February in Kansas and Nebraska. The Company is professional in every facet, complete with storybook sets, costumes and props appropriate for each production.

The performances of “The Three Little Kittens” and “Yankee Doodle” in Logan is sponsored by the Hansen Museum and made possible by the Dane G. Hansen Memorial Foundation.

Logan school to host Wichita Children's Theatre performances

The Center for Life Experience, 103C E. 27th, Hays, has canceled its <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/9ae21cd0-3b2c-44f3-a096-4ddc0344e07b">Healing Kids’ Hearts Retreat</a>, originally scheduled for March.

The free one-day retreat is for children who have recently lost a loved one. The annual event has been designed to help the children through the grieving process through a series of hands-on activities. Each child is paired with a trained adult “buddy” to help guide them through the day’s events.

The center has recently lost two key members of its staff, said Scott Robson, vice chair of the CFLE’s Board of Directors.

“The vision of CFLE to make a positive impact in the children's lives is at the core of our decision to announce the postponement of the Healing Kids' Hearts Retreat until March 2024,” Robson said. 

“Unfortunately,&nbsp;changes in leadership and limited resources made us concerned whether we could plan the event, maintain its high quality and meet the children's needs by March of this year.”

GREAT BEND - If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to weld, now is your chance thanks to Barton Community College’s spring stick welding class, which will be offered from 6-9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday nights from March 6 through May 11 in the welding lab in the Technical Building.

Executive Director of Workforce Training and Economic Development Mary Foley said the class is designed to give students the skills to weld for personal applications and gain skills that could help them land a job.

“This is a great skill to learn for hobbyists wanting to build their toolkit for various repairs and projects, but it can also be a springboard to a career in welding,” she said. “Classes like this one are a great way for people to try out welding to see if it’s something they might want to do professionally, and it also counts for three hours of college credit.”

Quinter UMC to celebrate 125 years Feb. 19

LOGAN - The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program is pleased to welcome certified Bob Ross instructor Sandy Seamone to teach two Joy of Painting classes on February 18th and 19th. 

On Saturday, February 18th, the class will paint “Desert Paradise,” and on Sunday, February 19th, “Peaceful Night.” Classes held in the Hansen Museum Community Room, Logan, KS, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. Sandy learned from the happy tree guy himself. Implementing the soft-spoken, supportive ways of her mentor, Sandy creates a classroom with a relaxing and light-hearted atmosphere. 

All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels.
