TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly invites jobseekers to participate in the first Virtual Job Fair of 2023, hosted by&nbsp;KANSASWORKS. This virtual fair will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, and&nbsp;will highlight employment opportunities within many of the state’s 98 government agencies. There are close to 900 job openings in state government across Kansas.&nbsp;

“Filling our state agencies with talented and skilled employees is increasingly important,”&nbsp;Governor Kelly said.&nbsp;“We need to ensure our state agencies have the necessary workforce to advance the programs and services we offer to Kansans.”&nbsp;

Registration is required in order to participate in the event, regardless of previous participation. 

The Virtual Job Fair portal features a Job Seeker Training video, a list of participating employers, and channels for attendees to register and log in. Jobseekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as employers might request to engage in a video interview that day.&nbsp;

“Our agencies are primed and ready to hire top talent to fill open jobs across the state,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and&nbsp;Secretary of&nbsp;Commerce David Toland&nbsp;said. “Commerce alone has 30 job opportunities available and we are seeking motivated individuals ready to join our winning team.” 

KANSASWORKS links businesses, jobseekers, educational institutions and training providers to ensure the state’s workforce is equipped to meet industry needs. Workforce development teams are dedicated to providing assistance with the job search process, creating effective resumes, job training, job placement and more.&nbsp;These centers are ready and available to assist&nbsp;anyone looking for employment&nbsp;with the necessary tools to finding&nbsp;good paying occupations.&nbsp;

Virtual job fair for state openings takes place Wednesday

City of 
Hays Public Works crews will be removing snow from the downtown area 
from Oak to Fort streets and Seventh to 13th streets, Main Street from Sixth to 16th streets, and West Ninth and 10th
 streets in the 100 and 200 blocks Saturday starting at approximately 10 p.m. 

City crews request that cars be 
removed from these areas to allow the crews the ability to completely 
plow the street and the on-street parking areas.

Move your cars: Time for Hays crews to start pushing snow

Celebration Community Church has announced it they will serve as a host of <a href="https://www.nighttoshinehays.org/">Night to Shine 2023</a>, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation. The unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, celebrating people with special needs will be held&nbsp;in-person&nbsp;by host churches around the world simultaneously on Friday, Feb. 10.&nbsp;

"Celebration&nbsp;is excited to be a part of this worldwide movement that God is using as a catalyst to change how cultures embrace people with&nbsp;disabilities&nbsp;and to rally the church worldwide to honor their local community of people with special needs, ensuring they know they are valued and loved," the church said in a news release.

Every&nbsp;guest of Night to Shine enters this complimentary&nbsp;event on&nbsp;a&nbsp;red carpet&nbsp;complete with&nbsp;a&nbsp;warm welcome from a&nbsp;friendly&nbsp;crowd&nbsp;and&nbsp;paparazzi. Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including&nbsp;hair and makeup stations,&nbsp;limousine rides,&nbsp;corsages and boutonnieres,&nbsp;a catered&nbsp;dinner, karaoke, prom favors&nbsp;and&nbsp;,&nbsp;a dance floor … all leading up to the moment when each guest is crowned&nbsp;king or queen of the prom.

“I’m so excited Night to Shine 2023 will be back in-person! All around the world, individuals with special needs&nbsp;are going to be celebrated like they should be. RUSSELL — The Deines Cultural Center will present its next art show, Wendy Tan: Solo Exhibition, beginning this weekend.

Tan, Hays, said her works have been greatly influenced by nature and that she loves small flowers and plants, specifically dry and curly leaves.

“They are small but may still have unique values that are attractive,” she said. “For example, they own beautiful, detailed lines, textures, and forms; however, we easily ignore as we do not pay close attention to them. Only if we magnify them, their insignificant values appear to attract our attention.”

Tan has received numerous awards throughout her artistic career including the “Best of Show” Award from the Yosemite Museum Gallery, the “Best of Photographer” Award from Forum Magazine, the Cash/Merit Awards from The Municipal Arts Councils and the Art Study Tour Award in Switzerland. 

She has exhibited her work in prestigious galleries and museums nationally and internationally such as The Huntington (Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens) in San Marino, Calif., Yosemite Museum Gallery in Yosemite, Calif., Kings Arts Center in Hanford, Calif., Carnegie Art Center in Turlock, Calif., Gallery 5 at Gallery Row in Oakhurst, Calif., Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dannis, Mass., Wallowa Valley Arts Council in Joseph, Oregon, Mark Arts in Wichita, CityArts Art Gallery in Wichita, Wesleyan University Art Center in Salina, Hays Arts Councils in Hays and the Fine Art Asia in Hong Kong.

Tan’s exhibition opens with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and is on display until Feb. 19.

RSVP deadline for Ellis Co. Conservation meeting nears

Join The Friends of Historic Fort Hays in welcoming Dr. Steven Boylan to Fort&nbsp;Hays as part of their 2023 annual meeting. 

Dr. Boylan will be presenting the very&nbsp;interesting and informative program titled, “Military and the Media Then and&nbsp;Now.” He currently serves as a professor of the practice and the director of&nbsp;graduate military programs for the University of Kansas School of Business in Leavenworth, Kansas. Teaching at the graduate level, he has developed and&nbsp;teaches a total of five graduate courses.

Dr. Boylan retired from the United States Army in November 2010 as a colonel&nbsp;with almost 27 years of service in both public affairs and Army aviation.

During the Surge 2007-08, he was responsible for the public affairs mission in Iraq under Commanding General David Petraeus.

He has worn many&nbsp;hats (helmets) in his career, and as Master Army Aviator, he qualified in both&nbsp;Huey and Apache helicopters.

His knowledge of the subject matter and his personal experience make for a&nbsp;compelling program. 

As Deb Goodrich, former media liaison at Fort Leavenworth recently commented, “If you think his resume is impressive, you ought to see him&nbsp;in action.”

Dr. Boylan will be presenting the very&nbsp;interesting and informative program titled, “Military and the Media Then and&nbsp;Now.” He currently serves as a professor of the practice and the director of&nbsp;graduate military programs for the University of Kansas School of Business in Leavenworth, Kansas. Teaching at the graduate level, he has developed and&nbsp;teaches a total of five graduate courses. Dr. Boylan retired from the United States Army in November 2010 as a colonel&nbsp;with almost 27 years of service in both public affairs and Army aviation. During the Surge 2007-08, he was responsible for the public affairs mission in Iraq under Commanding General David Petraeus. He has worn many&nbsp;hats (helmets) in his career, and as Master Army Aviator, he qualified in both&nbsp;Huey and Apache helicopters. His knowledge of the subject matter and his personal experience make for a&nbsp;compelling program. As Deb Goodrich, former media liaison at Fort Leavenworth recently commented, “If you think his resume is impressive, you ought to see him&nbsp;in action.” We look forward to seeing you at Historic Fort Hays, on January 29th at 2:00 p.m., to hear Dr. Boylan.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Society of Friends of Historic Fort Hays annual meeting and program will be Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at the fort visitors center, 1472 U.S. Highway 183 Alternate. The Wonder Women League of Ellis County is offering three $1,000 scholarships for the 2023-24 school year.

Ellis County women who will be attending full-time at Fort Hays State University, NCK Tech or the Hays Academy of Hair Design are eligible to apply for the scholarships.

The Hays High FFA Alumni and Supporters has scheduled a benefit dinner, auction and concert featuring the Peterson Farm Brothers. The Peterson Brothers are fifth-generation
farmers from Central Kansas who promote agriculture through entertaining and educational
videos on YouTube and post farming and video updates on social media.&nbsp;

The benefit event will
be Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Ellis County Fairgrounds, Schenk building. Doors
open at 5 p.m.,and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with the concert and auction to follow. Cash bar
will be available.


The goal of the Hays High FFA Alumni and Supporters organization is to support the Hays High
FFA Chapter by providing students with potential scholarships, FFA jackets, meal stipends for
travel, or other needs that may arise. Anyone that supports agriculture, and the development of
future leaders is encouraged to attend.

Tickets for this evening of food and fun are $20 per person with children 5 and under
free. Tickets can be purchased at Vanderbilt’s of Hays, the Hays Welcome Center, or from
any FFA Alumni board member. Limited tickets may be available at the door if the event is not
sold out.

NAMI mental health support group to meet Monday

PLAINVILLE — In conjunction with the Kansas FFA Foundation, Heartland Regional Stockyards Inc. will hold an inaugural FFA Special Sale on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the sale facility in Plainville.&nbsp;

The auction will feature a weigh-up sale beginning at 10 a.m. and feeder calf and yearling calf sale at noon. A complimentary meal will be served to all farmers and ranchers following the weigh-up sale. The meal is sponsored by Hubbard Feeds and will be served by local FFA members. The yearling and feeder calf sale will follow the meal at approximately noon.

Sellers and buyers can elect to contribute $1 per head to the FFA. Monies will be split between the Kansas FFA Foundation and the local Kansas FFA Chapter of the donors choosing. Heartland Regional Stockyards has committed to matching all per-head contributions for the day.&nbsp;

The sale was inspired by a vision of Brandon Hamel, manager of Heartland Regional Stockyards and Lloyd Schneider, Kansas FFA Foundation Board of Trustee, to support Kansas FFA at the state and local level.&nbsp;

“The FFA is one of the most important youth organizations available to high school students today,” Schneider said. “The organization teaches today’s youth skills that they will need to be successful in their future. Public speaking, leadership development, business skills, and more are taught in agricultural education. And for these reasons our team at HRS believes it's extremely important that we invest in FFA members across Kansas.”

Beth Gaines, executive director of the Kansas FFA Foundation, echoed Schneider’s sentiments. 

“We are grateful for the vision of the team at Heartland Regional Stockyards to expand the resources available for the Kansas FFA and local chapters," she said. "The agriculture industry supporting agricultural education and the Kansas FFA is how we make opportunities and resources available to FFA members across the state to continue to grow and develop young people into the leaders of tomorrow.”
