MANHATTAN — Grain growers in western Kansas who plan to campaign for a seat on one of the state’s five grain commodity commissions — corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers — should be gathering petition signatures now to meet the November 30, 2023, filing deadline. 

The 2024 election will cover districts I, II and III — or the western third of Kansas.

• District I includes Cheyenne, Decatur, Graham, Norton, Rawlins, Sheridan, Sherman and Thomas counties.&nbsp;

• District II includes Gove, Greeley, Lane, Logan, Ness, Scott, Trego, Wallace and Wichita counties.&nbsp;

• District III includes Clark, Finney, Ford, Grant, Gray, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Kearny, Meade, Morton, Seward, Stanton and Stevens counties.

To be eligible to run for any of the five commodity commissions, the candidate must have been actively engaged in growing that commodity (corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat or sunflowers) within the preceding five years and may only represent the district of their primary residence.

Candidates must gather 20 signatures from eligible growers to be included on the 2024 ballot.&nbsp;No more than five signatures from any one county can be used to qualify a candidate.&nbsp;Eligible growers are Kansas residents who will reach age 18 before the election and who have grown corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers or wheat for the last three years.&nbsp;

Commodity Commission candidates for W. Kansas face Nov. 30 filing deadline

KANSAS CITY – Geographic information system staff at the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks are proud to offer hunters a new tool this year designed to make locating fields managed specifically for dove easier than ever. Each year, KDWP’s public land managers work diligently to provide quality wildlife habitat for public enjoyment – to include crops of sunflowers, milo and wheat stubble – that are sure to attract good numbers of wildlife, including dove.

To make locating these areas as seamless as possible, hunters should:

PRO TIP: Hunters should note the tool’s “Nearest Field Locator,” which allows users to select a point on the map and then search within a distance radius of their choosing.

The 2023 Kansas dove hunting season will run September 1 through November 29, during which time hunters may take mourning, white-winged, Eurasian collared, and ringed turtle doves. After the season closes, only Eurasian collared and ringed turtle doves may be harvested.

Hunters may keep a daily bag limit of up to 15 doves total, which can be mourning and white-winged doves in any combination; There is no limit on Eurasian collared or ringed turtle doves, but any taken in addition to the mourning and white-winged dove daily bag limit must have a fully-feathered wing attached for identification while in transport. The possession limit for dove is 45.

Lastly, hunters should keep in mind that migratory doves may only be taken while in flight.

HaysMed’s annual drive-thru flu shot clinic has been scheduled for Sunday, September 24. The event will offer free flu shots for all residents older than six months. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It will be the 24th year the hospital has offered the community service, and approximately 3,500 people are expected to be vaccinated during the free clinic. The event is sponsored by the Hays Medical Center Foundation. 

While there is no cost for flu shots, participants are asked to bring a canned food item to benefit the Community Assistance Center.

People age 10 and up can receive their free flu shot without leaving their vehicles. HaysMed volunteers will direct traffic during the event. 

If you want to fill out the forms and bring them with you, please go to <a href="https://haysmedfoundation.org/flu">haysmedfoundation.org/flu</a> and make copies to complete.

• Children 6 months through 9 years of age will be vaccinated on the west side of the Center for Health Improvement. Adults attending with children can also receive their shots in the same location.

• High-dose flu vaccine will not be available for 65 and over. The CDC has not expressed a preference for any flu vaccine indicated for people 65 years and older. It's most important for everyone to get the annual seasonal flu vaccine, whether it's a standard-dose or high-dose flu vaccine.

• There will be no nasal flu vaccine at the drive-thru flu shot clinic.

• There will be no egg free vaccines available at the drive-thru flu shot clinic. People with a severe egg allergy will need to contact their local healthcare provider for their flu vaccine. 

• No COVID vaccine available at the drive thru. The flu vaccine will contain no COVID booster.

More than 100 volunteers will be on hand to help with the event. HaysMed partners with Fort Hays State University and North Central Kansas Vo-Tech as both facilities provide students to help with the shots.

The vaccine also is available at HaysMed clinics for patients who are unable to attend the drive-thru flu shot event. Charges will apply at regular clinic visits, though the vaccine is covered by most health insurance plans.

Drive-thru flu shots available Sunday at HaysMed

The Hays Volga German Centennial Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, have released the schedule of events for the 51st annual Volga German Oktoberfest. The event will take place on Friday, September 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday, September 30 beginning after the Fort Hays State University Homecoming Parade until 6:00 p.m., in Municipal Park at 1st&nbsp;and Main Streets.

The free admission event will be full of German traditions and fun for the whole family, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing, kid-friendly activities, cornhole tournament, and more.

Many area non-profit organizations use the event as a fundraiser and sell signature German dishes like freshly grilled bratwurst, bierocks, and soups. The Hays Lions Club has been selling bierocks at Oktoberfest for over 20 years.

“We started with a tent years ago; then Warren Shaffer secured a trailer to keep us warm and dry, no matter the weather,” said Priscilla Hunt, Lions Club board member and former president.

“It’s a good chance for our members to engage in service for the community, and all of our profits benefit local organizations,” said Hunt.

The Hays Lions Club plans to sell 4,000 bierocks this year, along with herzen cookies.

NCK Tech will once again offer their drive-through food purchase options across from Municipal Park for easy pick up of bierocks (both fresh and frozen), green bean dumpling soup, bratwurst, and spitzbuben. Pick up will start at 10:00 a.m., Friday only, and will continue while supplies last. No pre-orders will be taken this year. All proceeds benefit NCK Tech Hays students.

Festival attendees will be able to purchase souvenir mugs, event T-shirts, and food and drink vouchers to be used in the park at the Oktoberfest Headquarters tent, run by the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Over 21” armbands will be available at the armband booths for $2 cash for those patrons 21 and over who plan to enjoy the beer selection.

“The estimated statewide fall harvest of turkey was less than 500 birds in 2022,” said Fricke. “While this is a small proportion of the statewide population, fall harvest is an additive source of mortality for turkeys, especially when hens are harvested.”

Over the past several years, commissioners have approved other preventative recommendations to reduce the impact of the fall season on turkey populations. In 2017, commissioners voted to reduce the statewide bag limit from four birds to one bird. In 2019, fall turkey season dates were reduced from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31 (123 days) to Oct. 1 through Nov. 10 (41 days).

But not all is lost. Staff continue working diligently to obtain as much data as possible in hopes of one day reversing declining population trends. 15 years of impact: Jana’s Campaign presents annual Empty Place at the Table gala 

Members of the community are invited to participate in an important community discussion on the dangers of fentanyl and its increasingly deadly impact on our nation.

"Fentanyl: The Facts" will be presented from 6:30 to 8:30 Thursday in the Memorial Ballroom on the campus of Fort Hays State University.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics, more than 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.

“Evidence suggests that 6 out of every 10 pills with Fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose. This topic needs to be addressed on campus and in the community, as awareness and prompt response can help save lives,” said Walt Hill, executive director of High Plains Mental Health Center, one of the event's principal sponsors.&nbsp;

The town hall event will feature several guest speakers, including Tony Mattivi,&nbsp; director of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and Dr. Steven Waring, who leads the Hays Medical Center Opioid Task Force. 

Discussion topics will include information on the effect of fentanyl on the body, the prevalence of the drug in northwest Kansas, how to obtain and use&nbsp;Naloxone,&nbsp;a life-saving medication that can&nbsp;reverse an overdose, the impact of the drug on teens and young&nbsp;adults, and where those affected by the drug can receive treatment and counseling.

“Counterfeit pills and fentanyl are the biggest drug threat in our community. Overdoses and deaths are occurring in Hays, and we have to work together to educate our children on the dangers that they are facing. This town hall meeting will be instrumental in helping to keep our friends and family safe,” said Don Scheibler, Hays chief of police.

The city of Hays is the principal financial sponsor of the town hall meeting, and the High Plains Mental Health Center is the principal organizer. Many local agencies involved in combatting opioid abuse in the region, including the Hays Police Department, FHSU Health and Wellness Services, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department, and DCCCA, will also contribute speakers and expertise to the discussion.  <li>There will be so much activity on Saturday, but we’ll once again begin by honoring the FHSU classes of&nbsp;1973 and 1963 for their reunion breakfast&nbsp;in the morning. It will be a more intimate setting for those classmates from 50 and 60 years ago to catch up, and tickets for this are $15 each. That begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Union.</li><li>Before kickoff that evening, all alumni and friends are welcome to a&nbsp;tailgate buffet&nbsp;on the East Lawn of Lewis Field at 5 p.m. Over the years, the event has welcomed not just alumni and fans but also families of the players on the team. It’s a great chance for them to connect while they are in town. Registration for the tailgate is $16 but DOES NOT include a ticket to the game. Tickets for the&nbsp;game vs. the Lincoln Blue Tigers&nbsp;can be purchased through FHSU athletics.</li>

The Hays USD 489 school board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Rockwell Administration Center to review final plans for the new Hays High School.

This session is informational in nature and no vote is anticipated, USD 489 staff said.

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting nine meetings this fall as part of the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE) Local Consult process. KDOT holds Local Consult meetings every two years to discuss regional transportation project priorities with Kansans.

Attendees will have an opportunity to share their region’s transportation priorities, hear about investments being made in transportation in their area, and learn about various grant funding programs available through KDOT.

These meetings are an important step in gathering public input for the IKE program – the state’s current 10-year transportation improvement program. They are open to all Kansans.

In advance of the Local Consult meetings, KDOT has launched a short survey asking for input on the Kansas transportation system. During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.
