GREAT BEND — Author of kid-friendly books, “Kate the Chemist: The Big Book of Experiments” and “Dragons vs. Unicorns,” Dr. Kate Biberdorf, will be the keynote speaker at the 19th annual Jack Kilby Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Day from 9:15-10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday, Nov. 20 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Her speech is free and open to the public.

As an associate professor of instruction at the University of Texas, Biberdorf is known for her theatrical and hands-on approach to teaching, and for breaking down the stereotypical image of a scientist by blowing stuff up while in a good pair of heels. The key to her approach is how she relates with students who might otherwise be intimidated by science by utilizing emotional responses rather than the memorization of facts.

Biberdorf is the author of science-themed children's books, including her most recent release, “It’s Elemental: Chemistry in Everything,” released in the summer of 2021. It is a chemistry guide that explains the science we experience every day. She has also appeared on the “Today” show, “NBC Nightly News,” “Wendy Williams,” and “Late Night with Stephen Colbert.”

The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is
announcing that a road reconstruction project will be taking place in the 1700
block of Vineyard Road, between 260th &amp; 270th Avenue. 

The road will be closed to through traffic, beginning at
8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 28th, through Thursday, November 30th, and
re-opening by 4:30 p.m. each day. 

Motorists traveling in the affected area will need to use
alternate routes of travel, until the project is complete.

City sanitary sewer line point repairs underway in Hays 

&nbsp;The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a leading suicide research and prevention organization in the U.S., invites those who have lost a loved one to suicide to participate in a day of healing at an International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day (Survivor Day) event held on or near the day’s observance on Saturday, November 18.

Our Hays area event will be a part of the nearly 300 events taking place worldwide this year. It will be held at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall at 2350 E. 8th, on November 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Survivor Day is held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving each year, as the holidays can be especially difficult for those who have lost loved ones to suicide. On this date, survivors of suicide loss are encouraged to come together to find comfort as they share stories of healing and hope. The observance is marked with events where attendees can join their local communities to find understanding and connection through their shared experiences.

“Survivor Day is a great event that brings those together that are grieving, dealing, healing and understanding .We all share a common bond that connects us. The holidays are coming up and suicide rates tend you go up around this time of year; it is especially important that we are getting together and learning coping, healing and prevention skills. The biggest thing we want everyone to know is that they are not alone.”

Local Survivor Day events offer attendees the opportunity to learn coping strategies, explore grief and discover resources to help with each unique healing journey. 

The Hays events will also hold a screening of a new AFSP-produced documentary showcasing relatable stories of loss, hope and healing, and include a speaker and lunch. It is a safe and comfortable environment with others who are trying to heal and who want to connect with those that have gone through the same thing. It helps us all to work toward healing, accepting, understanding and prevention for our future generations.

The kickoff for "Christmas Magic" has begun.

This is a local program where we make up gift bags for veterans, the elderly and house-bound folks who will have no one else to remember them at Christmas.

This program receives no funds through United Way, etc. It is completely local and made to happen by Hays area residents watching out for one another.

Our elves deliver to people in apartments, individual homes, assisted living and nursing homes.

This year, our sixth, we will be delivering 120 bags.

To get our numbers we contact the various agencies who assist our veterans and shut-ins, LINK staff and our local nursing homes and they give us their numbers. So far, with God's help, we have been able to meet the numbers given to us each year.

Our gift bags are filled with full sized item such as Pantene 2-in-1 Shampoo &amp; Conditioner, Vaseline Hand &amp; Body Lotion, a deck of playing cards, a stress ball, a large-print word search book, cookies, candy canes, a bottle of body wash, a back scratcher, etc.

You can sponsor a bag for a donation of $25 per bag. (The actual value of each bag is just under $45.)

If you choose to sponsor a bag you can attach a Christmas card to the bag with a greeting from yourself or your family.

Our group makes absolutely no money on this program, nor do we charge any administrative costs to be taken from monies donated. In fact, we kick off the program each year with a $500 donation. We also cover the cost of the treat bags we give to our Scout volunteers and the cost of all correspondence.

This year the gift bags will be given out on the 23rd of December and with projected shipping delays, time is of the essence.

Our projected total cost this year is $5,900. Thanks to donations we had left from last year and a very generous donation we received this year, we only need to raise $4,600 more.

We are registered with the state of Kansas as a non-profit, but we do not have a tax-exempt number. (The cost of getting one would be nearly as much as our annual budget.)

Please open your hearts to making Christmas merry for a forgotten one.

The Chamber in Hays, Kansas has announced the opening of sponsorship opportunities for the 36th Annual Ag Appreciation Dinner.

Fort Hays State University will hold a special rededication ceremony to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the original dedication of the Memorial Union on Nov. 10, at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Union’s Sunset Atrium.

Fort Hays State University’s Memorial Union was built in 1958. A dedication service was held in October of that year, where the building was named in honor of former students who lost their lives while serving their country.

A plaque bearing the names of those brave Americans was installed to commemorate the event. Twenty-five years later, the memorial was updated to include former students who lost their lives in conflicts up to – and including – the Vietnam War.

This rededication ceremony will include the addition of two former students lost in combat operations in Afghanistan, Army Chief Warrant Officer David R. Carter and Army Chief Warrant Officer Bryan J. Nichols. Their names will be added to the esteemed list of courageous individuals who preceded them.

This event will also include the unveiling of a new digital memorial display.

Veterans Day free appreciation breakfast at Thirsty's in Hays Saturday morning 

LaCROSSE — The First Christian Church of La Crosse has set a fundraising auction for 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at the church, 619 Oak, LaCrosse.

Proceeds will benefit the First Christian Church youth program. The program offers after-school activities and opportunities for older youth to take an annual mission trip.

This is the first major fundraising event for the program. Organizers hope to raise $10,000.

The after-school program, Friends Relying on God, also known as FROG, provides meals to the children in the program. The program also offers a food bank to the children's parents.

The older youth have traveled to Denver to work for a week in a soup kitchen, worked at a homeless shelter and ad served at a children's home. Most recently they helped with clean up and repairs at a summer camp.

"We want to teach them that life takes many different directions," Pastor Mark Sizemore said.

First Christian in LaCrosse is a church of about 20 people, but reaches beyond its congregation, Sizemore said.

at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7th, as well as on Wednesday, November 8th.
The bridge will also close at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 9th for
completion of the

project. The area will be re-opened by 4:00 p.m. each day.

HOXIE — Sheridan State Fishing Lake, Hoxie, will be dewatered to allow lake renovation.

As a result, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has issued the lake to be opened to public fish salvage effective immediately.

This order is posted on the information boards around the lake. 

It allows the public to collect any remaining fish by any legal methods as well as by hand, dip net, throw net, minnow trap or seine, snagging, gig, speargun, bow and arrow or crossbow with a barbed head and line attached from bow/crossbow to arrow per regulation 115-7-1. This fish salvage order also removes all daily creel limits and size limits per regulation 115-25-14. 

This public fish salvage will remain in effect until posted notice signage on site is removed.

Ellis Knights of Columbus to host Stag Night Friday

The first Apply Free Days are coming up. From Nov. 7-9, Kansas residents can apply to any state undergraduate program free of charge.

This Kansas Board of Regents initiative is hoped to remove a financial barrier for people applying to Kansas higher education institutions. Regardless of age or income, Kansas residents can apply for free to any state public university, community college, technical college, and private member institutions of the Kansas Independent College Association.

FHSU’s Director of Admissions, Jon Armstrong, said applying at FHSU is relatively simple.

“There are a lot of different ways students can apply to Fort Hays and not have to worry about the $30 application fee,” Armstrong said. In addition to the Apply Free Days, FHSU has historically offered application fee waivers for students attending FHSU admission events at their local high schools, campus visits, and FHSU recruitment events.

He said he hopes the Apply Free Days will encourage students who hadn’t considered higher education to explore the opportunities. The hope is also that students will gain more access to scholarships.

“We are more than willing to help any student apply and show them how the application process works,” he said. “The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to understand that access to higher education is not as difficult as they think it might be.”

Throughout the project, the signal lights may be intermittently flashing red, indicating a four-way stop, or even off completely. Under these scenarios the intersection may be controlled with temporary stop signs at some or all legs of the intersection. &nbsp;

Drivers are asked to use extra caution when approaching and entering the intersections. 

Avoid these areas, if possible, as travel delays can be expected. &nbsp;

Repairs are expected to be completed on or before the end of the day on Thursday.

Kensington Fall Festival Saturday at American Legion

The annual Kensington Veteran's Day parade is on Veteran's Day, Saturday, Nov. 11.

Seth Kastle, Hays, a veteran of Afghanistan and Iran and retired Army first sergeant, will be the guest speaker at 11 a.m.

Parade starts at 11:30 a.m. with free barbecue at noon.

RUSH COUNTY— "Night of the Father's Love," a Christmas musical  directed by Mark DeWald, will be performed by the Rush County Community Choir on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Liebenthal and again at 4:00 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church  in La Crosse. 

The Pro Art music club is the sponsor. Refreshments following. Everyone welcome.

Come be part of the Dragging Main event by the Hays Youth Leadership Advisory Board at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10.

Everyone wanting to participate will meet in the Hays Middle School parking lot before 7 p.m. From there, we will be escorted to the 27th and Main Street entrance by the Hays Police Department and then Drag Down Main.

We'll end up at Municipal Park where, starting at 8 p.m., the Descendants band will play in concert, and it is free to the public.
