The Wild West Festival, a 30-year-long annual tradition in the heart of Hays, is issuing a rallying cry to the community for volunteers to help with this year's event. With preparations underway for another memorable festival, the support of volunteers is more crucial than ever to ensure its success.

"As we gear up for another exciting year of the Wild West Festival, we are reaching out to our community for their support in making this event possible," said Jeff Ridgway, president of the Wild West Festival board. "Volunteers play a vital role in every aspect of the festival, from planning and setup to execution and cleanup."

This year, the Wild West Festival has implemented changes to its volunteer structure, making it easier than ever for individuals to get involved and contribute their time and talents. With a variety of roles available, ranging from event setup and logistics to hospitality and entertainment, there is something for everyone to help with.

"We understand that everyone has busy schedules, which is why we've made it a priority to offer flexible volunteer opportunities that accommodate different time commitments," Ridgway said. "Whether you can spare an hour or dedicate an entire week, there are ways for you to make a meaningful impact and be a part of this community event."

To sign up as a volunteer for the Wild West Festival, interested individuals can visit the event website at wildwestfestival.com, where they will find sign-up forms and more information about available roles and responsibilities.

Event set-up is expected to begin the morning of June 29 and conclude with a clean-up day on July 7.

Military Appreciation Night in conjunction with their game against the Colorado
Roughriders on Saturday, June 15th at Larks Park at 7 p.m.&nbsp; All active, reserve, and retired military
personnel are specially invited to attend and will be honored on the field
during pregame ceremonies. Military personnel will also be recognized after the
6th inning prior to the singing of “God Bless America”. Military personnel in
attendance should check in at the east side of the grandstand by 6:45 pm
Saturday evening.

Fans are encouraged to be in the park by 6:50 pm to show
their appreciation and support for all military personnel during pregame

In 1984, Esther Taggart and Irene Boone recognized a need for assistance for Ellis County residents.  They responded by creating the Community Assistance Center, which offers disadvantaged residents of Ellis County food, clothing, furniture, and miscellaneous items to aid them during their time of crisis. 

 This year, we celebrate 40 years of service to the community, and the philosophy remains strong and true.

Classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and antique tractors will
once again rumble the street of downtown Hays when the annual Thunder
on the Plains Car, Truck and Cycle Show returns to Municipal Park on June 7 and 8.

Last year, the annual event returned to its roots, returning
to downtown Hays and Municipal Park. This year’s ninth-annual event is debuting on a new date after dealing with several conflicting events in the fall.

“September is such a busy time in the city where there are so
many activities going on that we just had a hard time finding a permanent
location,” Jackie Lang, Thunder on the Plains secretary and treasurer, said.
“But going forward, it will always be the second Saturday, the second weekend
of June.”

The event, which brought in 250 cars last year, kicks off
Friday, June 7, with the cruise-in, and the car show is Saturday, June 8.

Everyone wanting to participate in the cruise-in can meet at
Big Creek Crossing before 6 p.m.&nbsp; 

"We'll leave the mall by 6 p.m., and we do have a police
escort from the mall to Municipal Park," Lang said. "If people want to come down
to Main Street, they can watch all the cars drive by and then come down to the
park. We'll have music down there and the barbecue."

The Lions Club will also sell beer throughout the Friday night and Saturday event.

Registration for Saturday’s show runs from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Municipal Park.

Lang said they have had good feedback from participants and
the community about the event being at Municipal Park and earlier on the calendar.

"We've had positive responses, people saying that they think
that the date changes is good," Lang said. "It's early in the year, so people
are anxious to get their cars out."

They are once again encouraging local vehicle owners to get
out their vehicles and bring them to the show, no matter what the condition.

"Hopefully, people will dust off their vehicles and get them
out of the garage," Committee Member Shelby Doty said. "Some may feel that
their vehicles aren't good enough to bring to a car show, but there are all years, makes, models (and) conditions. So, we welcome anything."

"If somebody wants to bring out their car that they feel
like isn't showroom ready yet, but they're working on it, we like that class,"
Lang said. "We're making a push to get those cars out there."

They will give away more than 50 awards Saturday afternoon
including for the Best Paint, Interior and Motor. Cash prizes will be given to
the Best of Show, Car, Truck, Motorcycle and Tractor.

The award ceremony is scheduled to start at 2
p.m. on Saturday.

The registration fee is $30. Anyone who registers by May
25 will get a 2024 T-shirt.

As big as the car show is, one of the group's accomplishments is the funds raised to be given to those in need
locally.

Thunder on the Plains has raised
more than $100,000 through its annual
action over the last seven years. 

Each year they host a live auction. That will start at 12:30
p.m. Saturday this year.

Items included this year are a recliner, pub table, a tool
set and a lot of gift certificates.

One of the big items this year is a 1955 Chevy couch made
from the tail end of a 1955 Chevy.

Mark Lang, Jackie’s husband, passed away unexpectedly in
December. Mark started working on the couch. After he passed away, a group came together to ensure the couch was finished for this year’s
auction.

They are also selling raffle tickets for a 48-inch propane grill donated by Olham Sales in Mark’s memory. The tickets are $50 and can be purchased online.

All auction items will be on display during the car show, and
anyone is welcome to participate in the auction. 100% of the proceeds from the
auction will go to Make-A-Wish. 

Knowing the region's need for
Make-A-Wish children and Mark’s affinity for the charity, the group wanted to partner to
raise funds for the nonprofit organization.

"Mark was an integral part of the car group," Doty said, "so
we wanted to do this in his honor, as well as helping some local families."

The couch, grill and many other auction items are on display inside Big Creek Crossing at the old Hallmark Store location.

Lang said there are three local children who are waiting for their wishes to be granted.

"Our donations, our funds are going to be going to the local
kids, and that's what we specified to them when we partnered up with them," Lang
said.

Wheatland Avenue asphalt project begins Wednesday in Hays

The Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is announcing that an asphalt overlay project will be taking place in the 600 block of Ellis Avenue, between Grants Villa Road &amp; Antonino Road. 

This area will be closed to through traffic beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5th and will remain closed until the project is completed. 

The estimated completion date is Thursday, June 6th, pending weather conditions. 

Motorists traveling in the affected closure area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is completed.

Ellis CountyThe Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division is announcing that an asphalt overlay project will be taking place in the 600 block of Ellis Avenue, between Grants Villa Road &amp; Antonino Road. This area will be closed to through traffic beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5th and will remain closed until the project is completed. The estimated completion date is Thursday, June 6th, pending weather conditions. Motorists traveling in the affected closure area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is completed.Please direct any questions to the Ellis County Public Works Road &amp; Bridge Division at 785-628- 9455. Natoma American Legion Thomas J. Hogan Post 109 Color Guard and the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 109 officers, commemorated the 159th Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 27. Veterans, members, Eager Beaver 4-H Club, and volunteers posted American flags on veterans' graves at 7 cemeteries in Osborne and Russell Counties. Natoma cemetery’s Avenue of Flags were placed by Post 109, Sons of the American Legion, and Auxiliary. Memorial Day services were observed at Natoma Catholic where WWI Purple Heart recipient Thomas J. Hogan is buried; North Immanuel Lutheran where the memorial bell was rung; Paradise Mount Herman; Natoma City Cemetery Avenue of Flags. The program included Post 109 Commander William Workman and Color Guard; Welcome and Pledge of Allegiance by Jenjer Murphy, Unit 109 president; Revolutionary War to Present Time Veterans’ Archives by Shawna Dunlap, Unit 109 Chaplain. Camdyn Makings and Andreya Lyle presented poppies for each veteran named; Prayer and Message was given by Pastor Thayne Sparke, Codell Community Church. Everyone joined in singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “God Bless America”. Lucy Alexander concluded the service on trumpet playing “Taps”. A Memorial dedication for Corporal James W. Castor followed on the Post 109 lawn. The community dinner was then served by the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteers in the American Legion Hall in Natoma.

A Different Mindset Association presents “A Polka Night to Remember” on Saturday, June 8 at the Victoria VFW. All money raised will stay local, funding dementia and Alzheimer's programs and caregiver support in Ellis County and surrounding areas.

This is a family event. Bring your kids and grandkids and enjoy a fun night of great polka music by Karl Meis, plus a dinner buffet, cash bar and door prizes.

Polka night to help fund dementia, Alzheimer's services in Ellis County

The free summer meals program for any child ages 1-18 will again be offered in Hays starting June 3 and running through Aug. 8.

"We're going back to the popular drive-through method," said Jessica Younker, nutrition services director for USD 489. "It's convenient, especially for those who don't have the time to sit and eat."

The program is funded by the federal government which reimburses the Hays school district for every meal it serves. There are no income requirements.

"Last year, we served anywhere from 600 to 900 kids a day," she said.&nbsp;

"There's a big need for it, especially with the prices at the grocery store.&nbsp;

"There's a lot of kids that rely on the school meal series during the school year. This just kind of helps fill that gap over the summer with nutritious balanced meals to eat."

The meal site will be on the west side of Hays High School, 2600 E. 13th, near the gym doors.&nbsp;

Hays High has the biggest kitchen in USD 489.

"You'll see our tent out there with our staff," she said.

Breakfast and lunch are served at the same time.&nbsp;

"You'll get a hot box with a hot lunch and then a bag with cold food in it, and also a breakfast for the following day."&nbsp;

On Thursdays, participants will get four meals to cover breakfast and lunch on Fridays when the site is closed.

The children must be in the vehicle with an adult.

"That's one requirement, that we have to be able to see the child so we know the meal is going to children," Younker said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pick-up waivers are available if the child cannot be in the car.

 "Parents will be able to pick up meals without the children present, once we have that completed. Only parents can do this, not daycare providers or others," she said.

"We sometimes have teenage babysitters come through with the kids they're watching and the babysitters themselves are also eligible for the free meals."

The meal pick-up time is 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, June 3-Aug. 8.

Fort Hays State University’s Social Work Department will host a national conference on June 27 and 28 at the FHSU Memorial Union.

“On the Road to Thriving Rural Communities,” the 49th&nbsp;Annual National Institute on Social Work &amp; Human Services in Rural Areas will be offered both on campus and through Zoom.

The conference will feature a legislative panel, and keynote speakers on the topics of human trafficking, substance abuse, mental health, and more.

“This conference is a great way to learn more about diversity in rural areas in America, as well as providing human service specialists access to professional development resources through presentations,” said Leea Smarsh, 2024 Rural Conference Intern.
