The City of Hays has announced the following adjustments in city schedules:

City of Hays offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, 2024, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.haysusa.com//Calendar.aspx?EID=423">https://www.haysusa.com//Calendar.aspx?EID=423</a>

Due to the observance of Labor Day on September 2, 2024, refuse/recycling route collection schedules will be altered as follows: Monday, September 2, 2024 and Tuesday, September 3, 2024 will both be picked up on Tuesday, September 3, 2024. There is no anticipated change to Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday’s collection schedules.

Although collections may not occur on your normal day, collections will be completed during the week. &nbsp; It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recycling will be encountered around the holidays. Please make sure your refuse and recycling are out by 7:00 AM, and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

City of Hays customers that have any questions regarding this notice should contact the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department at 628-7350.

The Women’s Ministry at North Oak Community Church will host a women’s conference on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The “Beholding Christ . . . Becoming Whole Conference” will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, 3000 Oak St.

Speaking on-site will be Carrie Gaul of South Bend., Ind. Gaul is a speaker, author, and lay-counselor. “She will share how to experience more of Jesus’ presence, peace, and heart healing in one’s life and relationships,” a news release said.

The Bible scripture for the event is 2 Corinthians 3:18, “So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord.”

The early-bird registration of $25 is due by Sept. 10. The regular registration rate of $35 is due between Sept. 11 and Oct. 10. The later registration rate of $40 is due after Oct. 10.

Lunch is included. Childcare will be provided. Registration is available at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.northoak.net/women">www.northoak.net/women</a>.

“Beholding Christ and Becoming Whole is the way of God’s Kingdom,” the news release said. “It’s not ‘do more and try harder.’ It’s not ‘hide well the pain and struggle that awakens you in the night.’ It’s not ‘bury deep the heartache you carry each day.’

Gaul serves as part of the Staff Care Team with Life Action Ministries of Buchanan, Mich. Founded in 1971, Life Action “helps churches, families, and leaders move toward revival, vitality, and mission,” according to its website.

Gaul is also a fellow with The Truth Collective, an organization created to share the gospel with women by revealing “what is true about who God is and how He sees women,” its website said.

Gaul and her husband, Dennis, have been married for 43 years and have two married children and two grandsons. She said she enjoys “good coffee with old and new friends, walks in the woods, and quiet mornings on the beach.”

Gaul also will be speaking to women during North Oak’s Sunday School hour, from 10 to 10:50 a.m., the following day, Sunday, Oct. 27. All women, whether they are able to attend the conference or not, are welcome to attend, organizers said.

Conference attendees also will have an opportunity to shop at WAR (Women At Risk) Chest Boutique.

The 501(c)3 non-profit boutique, located in Wyoming, Mich., has a two-fold mission, according to its website: “We seek to market and sell handcrafted items made by at-risk and rescued men and women from around the world, supporting culturally sensitive, value-added intervention projects, while educating shoppers about the risks the vulnerable face in our world.”

Amy Gelatt, one of the conference organizers, emphasized the church will receive no funds from WAR Chest sales at the conference. This is simply an opportunity for attendees to learn more about the organization and, if they wish, to purchase some of the items on display, she said. According to its website,&nbsp;<a href="https://warchestboutique.com/">https://warchestboutique.com</a>, the group sells jewelry, ornaments, and bath and beauty products.

“There is so much brokenness in the world,” Gelatt said. “This brokenness is a worldwide problem that Jesus Christ came to solve.

“This conference is an opportunity to encourage one another in truth, to share one another’s burdens, to inspire each other to go on,” she said.

 North Oak Community Church to host women’s conference

The Ellis County Environmental Department has recently been awarded a $50,000 grant from KDHE and the LEPP (Local Environmental Protection Program). This grant will cover 85% of onsite wastewater system repair/replacement cost for households with income between 134% and 200% of the 2023 Federal Poverty Level. This grant will also cover 100% of onsite wastewater system repair/replacement for households with income of 133% or less of 2023 Federal Poverty Levels. 

This program will cover repair or replacement costs for failing wastewater systems owned and operated by low-income households within Ellis County Kansas. Replacement of these failing systems will protect surface and groundwater resources that low-income communities rely on for safe drinking water.

This LEPP Grant will be utilized for the repair/replacement of failing onsite wastewater systems. This grant will help accomplish long term goals established in Bulletin 4-2: 

Minimum Standards for Design and Construction of Onsite Wastewater Systems, including:

• Ensuring the quality of surface and groundwater is protected for drinking water, recreation, aquatic life support, irrigation, and industrial uses.

• Ensure a breeding place or habitat will not be created for insects, rodents, and other vectors that may later contact food, people, pets, or drinking water.

• Prevent wastewater from being exposed on the ground surface where it can be contacted by children and/or pets, creating a significant health hazard.

• State and Federal laws and local regulations governing water pollution or wastewater disposal will be met.

• Nuisance conditions or obnoxious odors and unsightliness will be avoided. 

The Ellis County Environmental Department will be the sponsoring organization. If you or someone you know possibly meet the criteria above, please contact the Environmental Department for an application and to discuss requirements. The funds will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis. The funds will carry over into future years and depending on need, may be replenished yearly with the grant application process.

Free Animal Safari Party set for Thursday; learn about joining Girl Scouts

Grow Hays, in association with the Network Kansas E-Community Partnership, announces the ‘Think Like an Entrepreneur’ - Ice House Entrepreneurship Program offered in Ellis County. 

Sessions will be held over eight weeks, on Wednesdays beginning September 25 through November 13. 

The goal of the course is to teach participants to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Taught by Kris Munsch, a certified Ice House facilitator, this interactive 8-week program provides practical entrepreneurial lessons through first-hand experiences of successful, real-life entrepreneurs. Based on the book, Who Owns the Ice House, this curriculum consists of case studies along with individual assignments, assessments, and discussion topics. 

This popular course is offered only a handful of times per year across the state and Grow Hays is excited to have local resident Kris Munsch teaching the course.

"To think like an entrepreneur, you need to begin at the beginning. The beginning is 'what is a mindset?' I believe we need that understanding, a foundational building block of self. From there, we can seek, explore, and build our path," said Munsch, Ice House facilitator.

The program fee runs $150 for adults and $75 for students and covers catered meals. We are offering an early bird price of $100 if signed up and paid by September 11. 

Registration is limited, and in-county attendees will have priority to fill the course. Out-of-county attendees are welcome to register but may be put on a waiting list. The deadline to register is Thursday, September 18.

Think Like an Entrepreneur/Ice House program launches in September at Grow Hays

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 will host an afternoon of free bingo during the annual Labor Day Celebration, Monday, September 2, in Natoma. Following the annual parade, the American Legion Hall will be open 2:45 PM-5:00 pm for a “fun, free, family” bingo hour with mystery prizes and refreshments in the cool airconditioned Hall atmosphere. 

The community is invited to join in a veterans’ program by donating items for the Fort Dodge Soldiers’ Home Christmas Store, 3 PM-5 PM. A list of needed items can be found posted throughout the town and by checking the Natoma Face Book page. 

Collection boxes will be available. Members continue to provide 22 annual projects through their volunteer efforts. For information in joining the volunteer auxiliary, or in helping veterans in the Fort Dodge Soldiers’ Home project contact Jenjer Murphy, president.

American Legion to host free bingo

LOGAN — The 46th annual Logan Labor Day Celebration at the Logan Golf Course located 1.25 miles east of Logan on Highway 9, will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2024. 

The Hansen Museum with funds from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation sponsors this annual family-friendly event. There is no admission fee. 

Please note, there is construction on Highway 9. 

If traveling west bound from Glade, ignore detour signs, Highway 9 is open all the way to the golf course. If you are traveling east bound from Densmore, detour through Logan. Turn south (right) on 1300 Rd. (Douglas Street), continue south to Main Street, turn east (left) onto Main Street continue until reaching end of pavement, then veer left onto gravel road and follow road to Highway 9 (short distance—less than a mile). At Highway 9 turn east (right) and proceed to the golf course.

The day kicks off at 10:00 a.m. with the Dane G. Bales Jr. Memorial Car Show. The car show has been a highlight of the Labor Day Celebration since 1998. This year’s feature car is Ray Mace’s 1961 Chevy. Make sure to get there before 4:00 p.m. to check out everything from classic coupes and beefed-up muscle cars to antique pick-up trucks and flashy hot rods.

Grab your friends and make a team for the sand volleyball tournament. Each team must consist of 3 men and 3 women (all 16 years or older). Bump, set, and spike your way to victory—first place wins 50% of the purse and T-shirts, second place receives meal tickets, and T-shirts, and third place takes home T-shirts. Registration closes at 10:30 a.m. and the tournament starts at 11:00 a.m.

Get some exercise, see the sights, or win a prize at this year’s festivities.

 Let the kids run loose and find entertainment that will burn off some energy by jumping in the bouncy house or compete with their friends on the obstacle course. Ready to test your arm? Check out the football pass game. All these fun opportunities will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Feeling competitive enough to try for a prize? The Siruta Pedal Pullers State Sanctioned Kid’s Tractor Pull begins at 2:00 p.m. and winners are eligible to compete in the State Pull at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

In between activities, you’ll find plenty of delicious options for both lunch and supper, (plus snacking in-between), at the Logan Junior Class Food Booth, The Corn Kettle, and Buck’s Snow Shack.

Take a ride into Logan and visit the Hansen Museum from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. 

On view in the museum is Da Vinci The Exhibition. Step inside and be transported back in time to the Renaissance. Da Vinci The Exhibition follows the polymath, Leonardo da Vinci, on a journey of innovation, creativity, science, and wonder. Da Vinci The Exhibition is a hands-on exploration of the life and work of the original Renaissance man, Leonardo da Vinci.

The 46th annual Logan Labor Day Celebration’s live entertainment will start at 5:45 p.m. with a group of cowboy poets spinning tales underneath the food booth tent and at 7:00 p.m. Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations will take the main stage. Plan to rock the night away as the band takes you on a musical journey through the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Last, but certainly not least, the grand finale by Rainbow Fireworks of Inman, will light up the sky with a brilliant display of fireworks that can be seen for miles. All this and more happens at the 46th annual Logan Labor Day celebration, at the Logan Golf Course located 1.25 miles east of Logan on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

46th annual Logan Labor Day Celebration is Sunday, Sept. 1

COLBY - Author and former Kansas Magistrate Judge Tommy Webb is the featured speaker on Sept. 10 as part of Colby Community College's Dr. Max Pickerill Lectures Series. Judge Webb’s presentation begins at 7 p.m. on campus at the H.F. Davis Memorial Library.

Born in South Korea during the Korean War in 1952, Judge Webb lived in an orphanage and moved to the United States when he was adopted in 1959.

He tells his story of hope after rising from squalor, spending nights in trash dumpsters, and eating garbage before running away from the crippling chaos. He received acts of kindness from many people and experienced mercy and grace, allowing him to find a safe place in a suffering world. 

In his book "Running Away and Finding Home," he writes, “This is my story. I share it to inspire others. You, too, can make a difference.”

His dynamic message to value and appreciate the qualities of other people is delivered with a sense of humor that will be inspiring, thought-provoking, and entertaining.

Judge Webb served four years in the United States Marine Corps from 1970 to 1974 and was first elected in 1988. He served consecutive terms before retiring in 2016 with the distinction of being the first Asian judge for Kansas. 

Today, he speaks throughout the United States, sharing his inspirational message.

There is no charge to attend the presentation. The Dr. Max Pickerill Lecture Series is funded annually by anonymous donors.

The Ellis County Board of Commissioners are requesting citizen interest in being apart of the new Ellis County Library Board. 

To be eligible for the appointment, the person must live within the new taxing district of the Ellis County Library, which is anyone who lives in Ellis County, but not within the city limits of Hays or Ellis.

 Initial appointment terms will vary, but appointments will have four-year terms after the initial appointment. 

This is an exciting time for the new board. Some examples of the initial work needing done for the new board are creating bylaws, board positions, meeting dates, times, and locations, budget, contractual work, and working with local public libraries.

KDHE officials issued the advisory because the city cannot currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Bierock fundraiser planned for Cancer Council of Ellis County

The Hays Symphony will once again be joining
the festivities of the Fall Art Walk by holding an outdoor concert on Friday,
August 23, at 7:30 p.m. under the Hays Pavilion. The concert, themed “Let’s
Dance,” will contain an assortment of folk music from around the world,
including Hungarian dances, Irish reels, and more. 

This warm-weathered tradition of the Outdoor
Pops Concert consistently draws a large crowd of attendees. Part of this is due
to the Hays Symphony’s commitment to providing live classical music and events
to the community, completely free and open to all. On Friday night, attendees
are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, sit back and relax, and enjoy a lively
selection of folk dances amidst family and friends. 

At last year’s Fall Art Walk, the orchestra
was met with unexpected weather and was forced to pack up after their third
number. Given this, the members of the orchestra look forward to returning
downtown and holding the concert with renewed energy and spirit. 

Along with the music, attendees will be
treated to cookies complimentary of Cathy’s Breads. The outdoor concert event
is made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Downtown Hays
Development Corporation. 

“Let’s Dance” marks the first concert of the
2024-25 season. Looking ahead, the Hays Symphony has a rich and diverse program
lined up. 

In September, cello virtuoso Ben Cline will
highlight “Dark Whimsy,” featuring Shostakovich’s brooding and off-kilter Cello
Concerto No. 2 and Beethoven’s lighthearted yet fiery Symphony No. 8. 

The annual Children’s Halloween Concert will
return in October under the theme “¡Fiesta Mexicana!,” a musical and cultural
celebration of Mexico that is sure to put smiles on faces. As winter sets in,
“Holiday Pops Around the World” will feature familiar and not-so-familiar
holiday music from around the globe. 

In the spring, the third annual “Concerto/Aria
Concert” will showcase the talented music students of Fort Hays State
University. The season will close with “A Song of Love and Jealousy,” featuring
Stravinsky’s masterpiece Petrushka,
as well as piano virtuoso Irena Ravitskaya performing Grieg’s beloved piano
concerto.

 </figure>SubmittedThe Hays Symphony will once again be joining
the festivities of the Fall Art Walk by holding an outdoor concert on Friday,
August 23, at 7:30 p.m. under the Hays Pavilion. The concert, themed “Let’s
Dance,” will contain an assortment of folk music from around the world,
including Hungarian dances, Irish reels, and more. This warm-weathered tradition of the Outdoor
Pops Concert consistently draws a large crowd of attendees. Part of this is due
to the Hays Symphony’s commitment to providing live classical music and events
to the community, completely free and open to all. On Friday night, attendees
are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, sit back and relax, and enjoy a lively
selection of folk dances amidst family and friends. At last year’s Fall Art Walk, the orchestra
was met with unexpected weather and was forced to pack up after their third
number. Given this, the members of the orchestra look forward to returning
downtown and holding the concert with renewed energy and spirit. Along with the music, attendees will be
treated to cookies complimentary of Cathy’s Breads. The outdoor concert event
is made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Downtown Hays
Development Corporation. “Let’s Dance” marks the first concert of the
2024-25 season. Looking ahead, the Hays Symphony has a rich and diverse program
lined up. In September, cello virtuoso Ben Cline will
highlight “Dark Whimsy,” featuring Shostakovich’s brooding and off-kilter Cello
Concerto No. 2 and Beethoven’s lighthearted yet fiery Symphony No. 8. The annual Children’s Halloween Concert will
return in October under the theme “¡Fiesta Mexicana!,” a musical and cultural
celebration of Mexico that is sure to put smiles on faces. As winter sets in,
“Holiday Pops Around the World” will feature familiar and not-so-familiar
holiday music from around the globe. In the spring, the third annual “Concerto/Aria
Concert” will showcase the talented music students of Fort Hays State
University. The season will close with “A Song of Love and Jealousy,” featuring
Stravinsky’s masterpiece Petrushka,
as well as piano virtuoso Irena Ravitskaya performing Grieg’s beloved piano
concerto. Attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets

where they can also make donations to sustain free classical music in the Hays
community.

Celebrate with the Hays Public Library Foundation! The Foundation is hosting the 4th&nbsp;Annual Wine &amp; Cheese Fundraiser on October 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hays Public Library.

The event will begin with a wine and cheese social hour, followed by a fascinating presentation from Matthew Fulkerson. The former American Ninja Warrior contestant will discuss how he transformed a decommissioned missile silo outside of Wilson into an adventure resort. The evening also will include a raffle and silent auction.

The Hays Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 to&nbsp;serve as a source for funding emergent and unexpected needs and events associated with the library. A project to remodel the basement of the library is underway. The money raised through this event will help fund improvements planned to update the Kansas Room, which is housed in the basement. Annual HPL Foundation Fundraiser to benefit Kansas Room remodel

Development Series event, "Performance Management 101," sponsored by

This Lunch and
Learn session will take place at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall &amp; Catering,
located at 2350 E. 8th St., Hays, at 11:30 a.m., August 21.

The session will feature speakers
Hannah Hilker and Michelle Bland, who will guide attendees through essential
concepts in performance management.

Depending on the type of claim submitted, this clinic will have resources available to provide a rating the same day the claim is filed. The Claims Clinic will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn located at 221 W. 43rd St. in Hays, Kansas from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., August 15.

This Claims Clinic is being hosted by the Wichita VA Regional Office (RO) in partnership with Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center (VAMC) and other state, Veteran-centric organizations including: the Kansas Office of Veteran Services (KOVS), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), and American Legion.

Hays area employers seeking to fill part-time positions or internships are invited to attend the Part-time Job Fair at Fort Hays State University on Wednesday, August 28, from 2 to 4 p.m.

There is no cost to participate, but employers must register no later than Aug. 22 by phone (785-628-4260) or email (careers@fhsu.edu). Early registration is recommended, as space is limited.

Businesses and organizations will have an opportunity to share information with students about part-time jobs or internships that are available.

FHSU plans part-time job fair

Starting Wednesday, August 14 in Hays, W. 17th Street from Elm to Walnut will be closed during the day to through traffic for water line replacements.
