Unique program combines talents of several Extension agents

LAWRENCE – More than 140 Kansas youth are boosting their science and technology skills this summer during an online program created in response to the need for social distancing.

Normally, Kaitlyn Peine, the 4-H youth development agent for K-State Research and Extension’s office in Douglas County, would be teaching STEM lessons face-to-face with a handful of kids. But with the global pandemic forcing new learning environments, she was able to rally several extension agents in northeast Kansas to combine their efforts this summer.

“We likely would not have been able to collaborate in this capacity face-to-face because geographically we are spread out so much,” Peine said. “But the great thing is our youth are getting the chance to be able to be taught by some of the best agents in Kansas and they are learning science along the way.”

Peine said the program involves agents from the Central Kansas District (Salina) as well as Dickinson, Douglas, Geary, Johnson, Leavenworth, Pottawatomie and Riley counties.

The agents have mapped out a hands-on, six-week course in which students log on each week for an hour. Each youth received a packet of materials by mail.

“We do a lot of 4-H science programming in Douglas County, and I thought ‘what better way to engage these young people with science programming than to get materials in their hands that they likely don’t already have at home?’” Peine said. “We then built lesson plans for the kids to do with us.”

Elementary-aged youth are focusing on environmental science and technology, Peine said. Already, they have completed lessons on water quality, electricity and circuitry, and have each built a robot out of a plastic cup. Peine said 100 elementary youth are participating this summer.

The middle school and high school youth are focusing on computer science, especially computer coding. “That’s a huge topic and initiative in 4-H right now,” Peine said, adding that 41 youth are involved in that part of the program.

She added that each of the extension agents is in charge of different lessons, though “most of us hop onto the lessons each week” to interact with the youth and help them through each science challenge.

The program is partially funded by the Google 4-H Computer Science grant, which is administered through K-State Research and Extension’s office in Johnson County. Peine said the grant helps to keep the students’ costs down to $10; the cost of the packet materials alone is close to $30, she said.

“The students are doing a great job staying engaged,” Peine said. “In the science challenges, their end product doesn’t always look the same and that’s OK; that’s the great thing about science. We all test and apply what we learn in different ways.”

The online classes are scheduled to run through July 8.

“This is definitely new water for us to be in this situation,” Peine said. “We are very much a people-to-people organization, and so to be facilitating programs this way, we are learning right along with the kids.

“The great thing I keep telling the team is that if we are in a situation when we need to be virtual again through the fall or winter, we have a framework set up to work from. We can definitely take what we’ve learned and apply that and make it even better.”

Ellis County Public Works will host an open house for the proposed improvements to 230th Avenue and Feedlot Road on June 23. The purpose of the Northwest Business Corridor project is to improve access, safety and economic development in this quickly developing area north of the city of Hays.

Ellis County Public Works proposes to reconstruct approximately four miles of roadway that will serve as a county road extension of the current U.S. 183 Bypass around the city of Hays. The proposed roadway will consist of two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders and intersection improvements that will accommodate the turning of large trucks.

The Northwest Business Corridor Open House will be held June 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Schenk Building, Ellis County Fairgrounds, 1344 Fairground Road.

Attendees are encouraged to attend the open house and can come and go at their own convenience. No formal presentation will be given, but preliminary project exhibits will be available for public viewing. Ellis County and Driggs Design Group staff will be in attendance to answer questions and will accept public comments regarding the proposed project improvements.

RUSSELL — Join the excitement of the Ad Astra Music Festival for its sixth summer of collaborative concerts and celebration of community. Despite the ongoing pandemic, Ad Astra is committed to bringing exceptional and diverse performances to the communities of western Kansas, this time in an all-new virtual format. The 2020 season features four unique performances spanning two weekends in July. All performances will be streamed live in central time and archived on the Ad Astra Music Festival Facebook page (@adastramusicfestival), free of charge.

The first performance, Young Artists at Home, will take place on Friday, July 17, at 7:30 pm. This performance features the undergraduate voice students of the Ad Astra young artist program. Curated by Katelyn Mattson-Levy, Young Artists at Home features our young artists sharing their voices from their own living rooms. Although we will not be able to meet them in person, we wanted to ensure a platform for their music and provide them with professional performance opportunities. Next, Ad Astra has commissioned composer Andrew Rodriguez to create an original work entitled Scattered Inheritance, featuring flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion, piano, and voice. This piece will be premiered in real time and streamed live on Saturday, July 18, at 7:30 pm.&nbsp;

The following weekend, starting on Friday, July 24, at 7:30 pm, Ad Astra will stream a performance from the High School and Community Virtual Choir. High school students from around the country will collaborate to perform a cappella, pop, and jazz arrangements in small groups, coached by industry professionals. Tune in to be inspired by the next generation of musicians! The Russell Community Choir will sing the finale in the familiar virtual choir format. The Community Choir is open to anyone willing to commit to the rehearsal and performance schedule and is led by artistic director and Russell native Alex Underwood. If you would like to take part in the Community Choir, keep an eye on Ad Astra’s website (<a href="http://adastramusicfestival.org/">adastramusicfestival.org</a>) as registration will be open soon. Closing out the 2020 season on Saturday, July 25, at 7:30 pm, will be a sneak peak of the upcoming Trudey Furney Opera. The festival has commissioned composer Anna Pidgorna and librettist Maria Reva to create an opera about the life of beloved Russell High School art teacher Trudy Furney. This sneak peek will be prerecorded in person featuring local Kansas artists and streamed live. Viewers will get an inside look into the creative process, complete with interviews and sketches. This livestream culminates with a workshop performance of scenes from the opera, to be premiered in full at Prairiesta next year.

While the festival is headquartered in Russel, Kansas, this new virtual format will allow viewers worldwide to enjoy these outstanding performances. Ad Astra is proud to be able to offer these live streamed performances free of charge on their official Facebook page.&nbsp;

Ad Astra Music Festival announces 2020 virtual season

Beginning Monday, Canal Boulevard in Hays will be restricted to one-way southbound between 23rd and 27th streets for the reconstruction of pavement in that area.

Also, 24th Street will be closed at Canal.&nbsp;

Construction is expected to last two weeks.

Reconstruction to restrict traffic on Canal Boulevard

Juneteenth
Jam,&nbsp; an educational event, will take place&nbsp;from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, June 19&nbsp; at the Hays Municipal Park (located south of the Hays Aquatic Park). 

It will feature speakers discussing the importance of June 19,
the 13th
amendment, Black Wall Street, and personal accounts of battling discrimination and injustice.&nbsp;

The event is set to move forward as planned, but organizers are watching the weather.

This free public event is open to all ages. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

A
voter registration table will be set up, and volunteers will be available to assist with registration. Petitions and educational materials will also be available.&nbsp;

The
organizers of the event request that individuals wear face masks and practice physical distancing to protect themselves and others from the spread of COVID-19. Disposable masks and hand sanitizer will be available.

Free performances during Ad Astra Music Festival virtual season 

Government Surplus Commodities will be distributed in Hays at:

Unite Common Grounds Coffee House and Free Store (inside The Gamers Guild) 200 E. 8th&nbsp;Street in Hays Friday, June 26 from 7:00AM-9:00AM and 12:30PM-1:30PM, if supplies allow. 

Clients may only get commodities at one of these distribution times, and commodities will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis until we run out.

Doors will not open until 7:00AM and 12:30PM, respectively.

To be eligible for commodities, your household's total monthly income must be below: * $1,383 Household of one * $1,868 Household of two * $2,353 Household of three * $2,839 Household of four * $3,324 Household of five * $3,809 Household of six * $4,295 Household of seven * $4,780 Household of eight

Commodities this distribution will be: beef stew, sliced peaches, pink salmon, dried plums, vegetable soup, tomato sauce, raisins, instant milk, frozen orange juice, beef chili, chicken, cream of mushroom soup, and turkey breast.

 With the purchase of their Gettysburg Farm, Ike and Mamie finally achieved their dream of owning their very own home after 35 years of marriage. They dreamed of retiring quietly in the countryside.

 However, their farm was much more than a simple retirement home. It served as a political and diplomatic tool throughout the President's two terms as well as a place for him to recuperate all while running a thriving cattle operation. This discussion explores the many facets of the place Ike and Mamie called home. 

Evans has worked for the National Park Service for more than a decade and as a full-time guide at the Eisenhower National Historic Site for two years.

Hays After 5 meeting to have patriotic theme

RUSSELL - There is an urgent need for blood donations right now, to meet the needs of patients in hospitals as surgical procedures and treatments that were temporarily paused earlier this spring in response to COVID-19 resume. At the same time, blood drives continue to be canceled, as many businesses and community organizations restrict the number of individuals at their locations, which creates challenges for a stable blood supply

St. John Lutheran Church, 425 N. Main, Russell, will host a blood drive Sunday, June 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Weekend blood drives in rural areas are not common, and provide an opportunity to donate blood for individuals whose schedules do not allow them to donate during a weekday drive.

A recent statement by the American Red Cross announced all blood, platelet and plasma donations will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies starting June 15, 2020. The antibody test is authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and may indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to the coronavirus, regardless of whether an individual developed symptoms. 

For the next few months, Red Cross blood, platelet and plasma donations will be tested using samples obtained at the time of donation and sent to a testing laboratory, where the samples will also undergo routine screening and infectious disease testing. A positive antibody test result does not confirm infection or immunity. 

The Red Cross has implemented additional measures to ensure blood drives are safe for donors and staff. 

· Checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering to make sure they are healthy

· Providing hand sanitizer for use before and throughout the donation process

· Following social distancing between donors including entry, donation and refreshment areas

· Ensuring face basks or coverings are worn by both staff and donors

· Routinely disinfecting surfaces, equipment and donor touched areas

· Wearing gloves, and changing gloves often

· Using sterile collection sets and an aseptic scrub for every donation

Individuals who would like to donate are asked to make an appointment online at <a href="https://www.redcrossblood.org/">redcrossblood.org</a> or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS to schedule a time that works for them. Appointments allow the American Red Cross to exercise social distancing and provide good donor services.

LOGAN — The Hansen Museum Continuing Education Program will welcome certified Bob Ross instructors T.R. Mathews and Sandy Seamone to the Hansen Museum Community Room to teach two Joy of Painting classes on June 27 and 28. On Saturday, June 27, the class will paint “The Old Pump,” and on Sunday, June 28, “Magic Dragon." Class will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break each day.&nbsp;

The Bob Ross method is designed to be a fun and simple way to paint. T.R. and Sandy learned from the happy tree guy himself, and their tag-team approach to teaching creates a relaxing and light-hearted atmosphere. All painting supplies are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. Young and old alike will enjoy the camaraderie of these classes. Students need only bring a roll of paper towels.&nbsp;

to third and fourth graders from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and then fifth and
sixth graders from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Fundamental camp is for seventh
and eighth graders and is held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

AMES, Iowa — A virtual commencement ceremony was held this spring at Iowa State University to honor the nearly 5,100 graduates who earned degrees. The traditional on-campus celebrations were moved online as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. University leaders recorded three commencement ceremonies to honor graduates. Graduates included&nbsp; Katherine Friesen, Colby, who was awarded doctor of philosophy, education.

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation, in partnership with the Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts, is pleased to announce two virtual high school summer theater workshops this summer.

Lovewell artists were originally scheduled to offer seven in-person workshops this summer, the third year of Lovewell Kansas. Due to the Coronavirus, the in-person workshops were canceled for the safety of our students. But creativity is not defined by in-person events!

The Foundation and Lovewell are excited to announce 2 online Lovewell Workshops (one week each) for NW Kansas high school students (those exiting 8th&nbsp;grade through graduating seniors).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Workshops dates are: June 22-26; and July 6-10, from 1pm to 4pm online. Students can participate in one or both.

Students will work with Los Angeles artists (and Kansas workshop favorites) Amber Allgyer and Eric Flemons to create a mini-musical or a themed song cycle. Other artists from around the globe are likely to pop in as well.

The final video product will be presented virtually and also be part of the Lovewell summer of 2020 around the world video.

The Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts is a not-for-profit organization that brings students together with professional artists to conceive, create, compose, write, choreograph, design and produce and original musical in each workshop. The Lovewell team are artist who make their living as musical directors, playwrights, choreographers, composers, lyricists, etc.

Summer high school musical theater workshops offered

Hays Christian Church is hosting a free drive-through smile and hygiene kit giveaway on Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Hays Christian Church parking lot, 22nd &amp; Marshall Road. 

Each individual will receive a smile kit donated by Delta Dental, soap and deodorant. 

In addition, each family can enter to win a bag full of groceries that will be given away at the conclusion of the event. 

A total of three grocery bags will be given away, limit one entry per household. 

The kits and giveaway are open to anyone in the community. Kits are limited to supply on hand.

Smile Kit giveaway Saturday at Hays Christian Church

Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, are looking for vendors for the two-day event. The Annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, in Municipal Park.

The raising of steins and wearing lederhosen will be part of the 2020 Oktoberfest Hays. The free admission event will feature two days packed with many German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing and more. &nbsp;

Registration is open for vendors to become an integral part of a long-standing Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. Oktoberfest provides the opportunity to expose businesses to a diverse demographic, due in part to the multitude of activities offered for every age and family size.

Businesses, artists, community groups and crafts vendors are invited to register for booth spaces. Vendors contribute to the Oktoberfest spirit and tradition by showcasing German-style crafts, activities, or foods into their vendor space.&nbsp;

For preferred placement, registrations forms must be received by Sept. 1. Any forms received after Sept. 1 will be charged an additional $50. Spaces are limited. Friends of the Hays Public Library will host a book giveaway on Sat., June 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

The volunteer organization has thousands of free children’s books up for grabs!
