HCT cancels 'Picasso' performances due to COVID-19 

The Hays After 5 Christian Women’s group has announced it is canceling its meetings for the rest of the summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;The meetings were scheduled for Monday, July 13, and Monday, Aug. 10.

Betty Rupp, the group’s area director, said in an email that the cancellation was due to the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Ellis County and the increased number of deaths attributed to the virus in the state.

 'Mars 2020 Mission: Perseverance Rover' presented by FHSU Science Café 

The public is invited to the Prairie Museum of Art and History in Colby for a reception and “Bringing it all Home” and art exhibition to welcome the work of Annette Hutfles-Boardman, from 2 – 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12.

The title “Bringing it all Home” honors Hutfles-Boardman’s first art exhibition in her hometown of Colby.

Now living in Topeka, the northwest Kansas native is known throughout the state for her realism landscapes that depict country scenes, rolling prairies and iconic sunsets of the Midwest. Additionally, her experience as a traveling art teacher brings to life crashing waves on ocean coasts and serene islands waking to pink morning lights.

“I work in various mediums such as acrylics, watercolors and pencil,” explains Hutfles-Boardman. “And, before I earned by Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kansas State University, my first formal art instruction came from Kenneth Mitchell at Colby Community College.”

Following college, Boardman entered the design and advertising world as a layout and campaign artist before teaching art classes in schools and arts councils throughout Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka. She also has experience illustrating children’s books and spent four years teaching private classes in her year-round art studio.

Most recently, an 11x14 acrylic titled “Through the Pines” was selected for a juried art show in Fremont, Cali., where it was received well and ultimately sold to a collector.

Today, with her 4-year old German Shepherd named Gracie, Boardman continues to paint fine art in her studio near Topeka.

“We hope people will enjoy this casual opportunity to meet Annette and see her impressive works of art,” said Prairie Museum Director Ann Miner. “We’re especially excited to honor the work of a Colby native, who attended the Sacred Heart Catholic School, Colby High School, and Colby Community College before making her mark in eastern Kansas and California.”

Boardman’s art exhibition featuring almost 40 works of art will be on display at the Prairie Museum through the end of August, many of which will also be available for sale.

Although admission is required to see the rest of the indoor galleries and outdoor exhibits at the Prairie Museum, visitors are always welcome to view art showings in the Garvey Education Room for free.

Colby native to host her first art exhibit in her hometown

The Wild West Fest in Hays is still on, although it has been scaled back because of the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

There will still be concerts Municipal Park, and this year, they're free. The downtown parade theme is "Hometown Heroes," and the large fireworks display can be seen&nbsp; July 4.

There will not be an enclosed beer garden due to current state guidelines.&nbsp;

However, cereal malt beverages in cans are permitted in city parks. No glass containers are allowed.

The 51st Annual Smoky Hill Art Exhibition is on display at the Hays Arts Center at 112 E. 11th St. The gallery is currently open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., temporarily closed on Saturdays.

The Hays Community Theatre presents Steve Martin’s comedy, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” July 10-12, and July 17-19. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online. Seating will be limited.

The Sternberg Museum of Natural History is open with a new interactive exhibit, “Into the Arctic,” which showcases over 50 original oil paintings and video by artist Cory Trépanier. You can still explore the spring exhibit “Prairie Ocean: Long Time No Sea,” which will remain up through the summer.

The Downtown Hays Market is now open every Saturday morning from 7:30-11 a.m. at the Downtown Pavilion at 10th and Main. Curbside pick up options are available.

The Bach’s Lunch summer concert series will take place at the Downtown Pavilion on the first, third, and fifth Fridays at noon. Call or email the Downtown Hays Development Office to reserve a $10 boxed lunch or bring your own.

Ellis Co. Fair invites bakers to King Arthur Flour  contest

...and a hilarious comedy begins as the Hays Community Theatre actors take&nbsp;the stage in Steve Martin's&nbsp;Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

The scene is a Paris bar in 1904, and yes, both Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein are just about to make historical breakthroughs in their respective fields. The interactions between them and other patrons of the bar will have you laughing the whole night through! Join us on Friday, Saturday &amp; Sunday (July 10, 11 &amp;12) and again on July 17, 18, 19 for a night of comedy. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased online.

The next show at the Deines Cultural Center in Russell, the 4-H Photography Project, opens Friday, June 26.

Come see photographs taken by the Midway Extension 4-H kids. 

There are currently 50 kids enrolled in the Photography Project. Over 13 have brought their Kansas State Fair entries to the Deines. Their work will be on display in the Deines Gallery from June 26 until July 26.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday noon to 5:00, and Saturday and Sunday 1:00 to 5:00. The Deines Cultural Center is located at 820 N. Main Street, Russell, Kansas.

4-H Photography Project opens at Deines Cultural Center

Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas is grateful for a $500 grant award from the United Way of Ellis County from their COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.&nbsp; The grant award helped to offset costs for the necessary supplies to implement preventative policies for the safety of staff and individuals in all DSNWK’s locations in Ellis County. These preventive efforts included the purchasing of personal protective equipment (PPE), following the guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

DSNWK would like to thank the United Way of Ellis County for their continuous support of people with developmental disabilities.&nbsp;

DSNWK is a 501c3 nonprofit serving 18 counties in northwest Kansas with a mission to advocate for persons with disabilities and those who care about them by planning and supporting a life of dignity, interdependence, and personal satisfaction in the community.

The Hays Larks Baseball Association is hosting the 9th annual “First Responders Night” at Larks Park on Friday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m. 

Everyone is invited to attend the game to help pay tribute to law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and all first responders for their commitment and contributions to our community. 

The Hays Larks will be playing the Denver Cougers and admission is free. 

The game is being sponsored by the First Care Clinic, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #48, and Hays Firefighters Local #2119.

All first responders are encouraged to attend the Larks baseball game with their families.

Unite Common Grounds Coffee House and Free Store (inside The Gamers Guild) 200 E. 8th&nbsp;Street in Hays Friday, June 26, from 7 to 9 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., if supplies allow. 

Clients may only get commodities at one of these distribution times, and commodities will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis until we run out.

Doors will not open until 7 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.

Government commodities distribution will be Friday in Hays

Unique program combines talents of several Extension agents

LAWRENCE – More than 140 Kansas youth are boosting their science and technology skills this summer during an online program created in response to the need for social distancing.

Normally, Kaitlyn Peine, the 4-H youth development agent for K-State Research and Extension’s office in Douglas County, would be teaching STEM lessons face-to-face with a handful of kids. But with the global pandemic forcing new learning environments, she was able to rally several extension agents in northeast Kansas to combine their efforts this summer.

“We likely would not have been able to collaborate in this capacity face-to-face because geographically we are spread out so much,” Peine said. “But the great thing is our youth are getting the chance to be able to be taught by some of the best agents in Kansas and they are learning science along the way.”

Peine said the program involves agents from the Central Kansas District (Salina) as well as Dickinson, Douglas, Geary, Johnson, Leavenworth, Pottawatomie and Riley counties.

The agents have mapped out a hands-on, six-week course in which students log on each week for an hour. Each youth received a packet of materials by mail.

“We do a lot of 4-H science programming in Douglas County, and I thought ‘what better way to engage these young people with science programming than to get materials in their hands that they likely don’t already have at home?’” Peine said. “We then built lesson plans for the kids to do with us.”

Elementary-aged youth are focusing on environmental science and technology, Peine said. Already, they have completed lessons on water quality, electricity and circuitry, and have each built a robot out of a plastic cup. Peine said 100 elementary youth are participating this summer.

The middle school and high school youth are focusing on computer science, especially computer coding. “That’s a huge topic and initiative in 4-H right now,” Peine said, adding that 41 youth are involved in that part of the program.

She added that each of the extension agents is in charge of different lessons, though “most of us hop onto the lessons each week” to interact with the youth and help them through each science challenge.

The program is partially funded by the Google 4-H Computer Science grant, which is administered through K-State Research and Extension’s office in Johnson County. Peine said the grant helps to keep the students’ costs down to $10; the cost of the packet materials alone is close to $30, she said.

“The students are doing a great job staying engaged,” Peine said. “In the science challenges, their end product doesn’t always look the same and that’s OK; that’s the great thing about science. We all test and apply what we learn in different ways.”

The online classes are scheduled to run through July 8.

“This is definitely new water for us to be in this situation,” Peine said. “We are very much a people-to-people organization, and so to be facilitating programs this way, we are learning right along with the kids.

“The great thing I keep telling the team is that if we are in a situation when we need to be virtual again through the fall or winter, we have a framework set up to work from. We can definitely take what we’ve learned and apply that and make it even better.”
