On Monday, construction will begin in Hays on Phase 2 of 230th Avenue and 55th Street intersection project, which consists of new curb and gutter, and concrete pavement for the intersection &nbsp;and 230th Avenue approximately ¼ mile north. &nbsp;

During Phase 2, 230th Avenue will be closed north of 55th Street for the remainder of the project. 

The only allowable movement through the intersection of 230th Avenue and 55th Street will be a right turn from northbound 230th to eastbound 55th Street.

Healing After Loss to meet Tuesday

The Hays Larks invites the public to the 12th annual Military Appreciation Night in conjunction with their game against Oklahoma City at 7 p.m. Saturday at Larks Park.  All active, reserve and retired military personnel are specially invited to attend and will be honored on the field during pregame ceremonies. Military personnel will also be recognized after the sixth inning prior to the singing of "God Bless America." Military personnel in attendance should check in at the east side of the grandstand by 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

Fans are encouraged to be in the park by 6:50 p.m. to show their appreciation and support for all military personnel during pregame ceremonies. Those ceremonies will feature recognition of all military personnel in attendance, a color guard, and the national anthem sung live by Uncalled-4. Those in attendance will also enjoy patriotic music and a red, white and blue-decorated park throughout the evening.  Flags lining the park will be provided courtesy of American Legion Riders Post #173 of Hays, KS. Military Appreciation Night at Larks Park will be Saturday

The Ellis County 4-H Livestock Sale livestock purchaser’s meal&nbsp; will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at the&nbsp;Ellis County Fairgrounds. The sale will be at 6 p.m. also at the fairgrounds.

What is the livestock/grand champion auction?

The Ellis County 4-H Livestock Auction is when the animals the 4-Hers have raised and cared for are sold to the public. This is the final step in their projects where the educational aspects come to life. This is also where the grand champion and reserve champion food projects are sold. The sale will be Saturday, July 17, 2021, at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

Why should I purchase an animal or food project?&nbsp;

You will receive personal satisfaction through:

Animals: Market beef, market swine, market lamb, meat goats, poultry and rabbits. Foods: The overall grand and reserve champion food projects, which could be anything ranging from breads to cookies.

Payment is due the day of the sale, made payable to Ellis County Fair. 

There are two plans from, which buyers may choose: Plan 1 Buy an animal through the sale for the market price, plus the premium price, and keep the project for a butcher animal. You must make arrangements with 4-H'er in regards to transportation to locker. If the animal is reserved to show, it will be delivered to you at a later date. Plan 2 Buy the animal and pay only the premium price. The animal will remain the responsibility of the 4-H member.

Please Note: Anyone may add on additional premium to a 4-H'er’s check by informing the clerk of the additional amount, with payment at the close of the sale.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded the stream advisory for the Paradise Creek, along the area east of Natoma near the wastewater treatment facility that was issued May 17.

GREAT BEND - Bike Brew Q is holding its sixth annual event in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on July 24 at the Great Bend Expo Complex. The event features three staples of summer: cycling, barbecue, and craft beer. The event was founded by Ryan Fairchild of Great Bend as a way to raise money to find a cure for cystic fibrosis, a disease his cousin, brother-in-law, and wife suffer from.

“Cystic fibrosis isn’t a disease that gets a lot of attention or awareness and we have set out to change that,” he said. “Having raised over $50,000 for research with our past events, we feel we have done so. The secondary mission of Bike Brew Q is to bring a new element to summers in Central Kansas. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday than riding a bike, drinking craft beer, eating food from a food truck and supporting a great cause in doing so”

Beginning Monday, HayMed will offer DOT Physicals at the Walk-In Clinic located at 3216 Vine, Suite 20, Big Creek Crossing in Hays.

The expanded hours at the walk-in clinic give more flexibility for those seeking a DOT physical.

“Sometimes 8 to 5 isn’t always an easy time to get DOT physicals.” Said Zena Jacobs, Physician Practice Operations Officer.&nbsp; “We are very pleased to be able to offer this service to the public.”

HaysMed offers DOT physicals at walk-in clinic

The Ellis County Public Works Road and Bridge Division is
announcing that an asphalt overlay project will take place between Butterfield
Trail and Spring Hill Road. 

The 800, 900 and 1000 blocks of 240th Avenue
between Butterfield Trail and Spring Hill Road will be closed to through
traffic as the project progresses. 

This project will begin at 7:30 a.m. on
Monday in the 800 block of 240th Avenue and will open and close as
the project progresses to the north. The estimated completion date is July

 For the 74th&nbsp;consecutive year, the High Plains Music Camp will offer students the opportunity to work with a wide range of outstanding musicians from across the country. Beginning on Sunday, July 11, Fort Hays State University’s High Plains Music Camp&nbsp;will host a wide range of musical concerts and performances, all open to the public and free of charge.

Performances will include the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Band (Kansas Army National Guard), the Camper Honor Recital, Faculty Strings and Faculty Band, and scenes from&nbsp;Camelot&nbsp;plus additional camper and faculty ensembles.

The week culminates on Saturday, with the collective camp ensembles beginning at 9:00 a.m. and taking place throughout the day. Concurrent events will be held in the Felten-Start Theatre in Malloy Hall and the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center in the morning, while all afternoon performances will be in the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system and affected customers South of Road 140 and East of M Road, the advisory did not include the City of Smith Center. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from Smith County Rural Water District No. 1 indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

LAWRENCE — After postponing all in-person events last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the University of Kansas Alumni Association, Kansas Athletics and the Office of Public Affairs will resume “Hawks &amp; Highways” gatherings this summer in communities throughout Kansas, part of a multiyear effort guided by Chancellor Douglas A. Girod to expand and strengthen outreach across the state. The series will include events in July and August.

University guests include the chancellor, Director of Athletics Travis Goff, head football coach Lance Leipold, Alumni Association President Heath Peterson and Dave Cook, vice chancellor for public affairs and economic development.

“We’re incredibly excited to get back on the road and connect with KU alumni, friends and fans in their hometowns,” Peterson said. “These events are a great way to strengthen Jayhawk relationships — and thank our loyal alumni and friends, who so often travel from their homes to our campuses to support KU.”

FHSU Student Engagement will host Summer Splash event

PHILLIPSBURG — Two sisters will entertain as part of a trick riding trio at the Phillipsburg rodeo.

Shyla and Layna Navarre, ages 15 and 11, will join Dusta Kimzey O’Connell in the arena as the specialty act entertainment at Kansas Biggest Rodeo August 5 to 7.

The girls are the third generation in their family to trick ride. Their grandmother, Dollie Beutler Riddle, was a trick rider, and their mother, Melissa Riddle Navarre, trick rode as well, performing in Phillipsburg as well as other rodeos across the country.&nbsp;

The girls, residents of Weatherford, Okla., have been riding since they were toddling, and began trick riding by the time they were in school. &nbsp;

Shyla, who will be a high school freshman this fall, was interested in it because of her mom and grandma. “I guess mom inspired me to do it,” she said. “I wanted to be like my mom.”

Shyla will ride Nugget, an eight-year-old registered quarter horse pony. He’s taller than what she’s been riding, which is good, as Shyla has grown, too. “I’ve outgrown my other horses,” she said.&nbsp;

Layna has two horses: Max, a registered Welsh pony, and Thunder, who has been in the family the longest. Layna is also riding her mom’s trick riding horse, Charlie, who is faster than the other two and who she is growing into as her skills progress.

Both girls play basketball, like their mother did, and both girls show animals. Shyla is in FFA, and this past February, Layna showed her 4-H sheep at the county fair, winning first with her crossbred sheep named Doc.&nbsp;

Shyla, as the older girl, has more experience trick riding and loves the vaults. The vaults require a trick rider to jump off the horse, onto the ground, and back onto the horse, as it gallops around the arena. Working on Nugget, who is a faster horse than her previous one, requires quicker vaults. “I’ve never been on a horse that fast to do vaults,” she said. “So you really have to get out of the saddle and get back into it.”&nbsp;

Both girls will complement Dusta O’Connell as she trick rides along with them; Dusta grew up admiring and learning from Melissa, so to have Melissa’s daughters work with her completes the loop.&nbsp;

For years, as the family drove past the Phillipsburg rodeo arena on their way to other rodeos, the girls wished they could be hired for that rodeo.

“We really wanted to work that rodeo,” Layna said.&nbsp;

Shyla’s favorite part of it is “being on fast horses, and seeing the crowd and the bright lights.” Her sister concurs. “I like when we’re doing tricks, and we’re in the arena and the crowd cheers,” Layna said.&nbsp;

Shyla also cracks a bullwhip as part of her act and does some trick roping.&nbsp;

They have a little sister at home, Clara, who is six; their dad (and Melissa’s husband) is Corey Navarre.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The girls, with Dusta as part of Tricked Out Trick Riding, will be the specialty act during each night of Kansas Biggest Rodeo August 5-7. Rodeo performances start at 8 pm nightly.  </figure>PHILLIPSBURG — Two sisters will entertain as part of a trick riding trio at the Phillipsburg rodeo.Shyla and Layna Navarre, ages 15 and 11, will join Dusta Kimzey O’Connell in the arena as the specialty act entertainment at Kansas Biggest Rodeo August 5 to 7.The girls are the third generation in their family to trick ride. Their grandmother, Dollie Beutler Riddle, was a trick rider, and their mother, Melissa Riddle Navarre, trick rode as well, performing in Phillipsburg as well as other rodeos across the country.&nbsp;The girls, residents of Weatherford, Okla., have been riding since they were toddling, and began trick riding by the time they were in school. &nbsp;Shyla, who will be a high school freshman this fall, was interested in it because of her mom and grandma. “I guess mom inspired me to do it,” she said. “I wanted to be like my mom.”Shyla will ride Nugget, an eight-year-old registered quarter horse pony. He’s taller than what she’s been riding, which is good, as Shyla has grown, too. “I’ve outgrown my other horses,” she said.&nbsp;Layna has two horses: Max, a registered Welsh pony, and Thunder, who has been in the family the longest. Layna is also riding her mom’s trick riding horse, Charlie, who is faster than the other two and who she is growing into as her skills progress.Both girls play basketball, like their mother did, and both girls show animals. Shyla is in FFA, and this past February, Layna showed her 4-H sheep at the county fair, winning first with her crossbred sheep named Doc.&nbsp;Shyla, as the older girl, has more experience trick riding and loves the vaults. The vaults require a trick rider to jump off the horse, onto the ground, and back onto the horse, as it gallops around the arena. Working on Nugget, who is a faster horse than her previous one, requires quicker vaults. “I’ve never been on a horse that fast to do vaults,” she said. “So you really have to get out of the saddle and get back into it.”&nbsp;Both girls will complement Dusta O’Connell as she trick rides along with them; Dusta grew up admiring and learning from Melissa, so to have Melissa’s daughters work with her completes the loop.&nbsp;For years, as the family drove past the Phillipsburg rodeo arena on their way to other rodeos, the girls wished they could be hired for that rodeo.“We really wanted to work that rodeo,” Layna said.&nbsp;Shyla’s favorite part of it is “being on fast horses, and seeing the crowd and the bright lights.” Her sister concurs. “I like when we’re doing tricks, and we’re in the arena and the crowd cheers,” Layna said.&nbsp;Shyla also cracks a bullwhip as part of her act and does some trick roping.&nbsp;They have a little sister at home, Clara, who is six; their dad (and Melissa’s husband) is Corey Navarre.&nbsp;&nbsp;The girls, with Dusta as part of Tricked Out Trick Riding, will be the specialty act during each night of Kansas Biggest Rodeo August 5-7. Rodeo performances start at 8 pm nightly. Healing Hearts to meet Thursday

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture will host the state’s agriculture community in-person for its sixth annual Kansas Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth on Thursday, August 26, in Manhattan.

The 2021 Ag Growth Summit will be a blend of in-person events and online meetings. The Summit main event will be held at the Manhattan Conference Center with in-person attendance highly encouraged. For several weeks prior to the Summit, a series of virtual sector breakout sessions will lead up to the Summit main event.

The Kansas Ag Growth Summit is well known as a time when all of the agriculture industry sectors gather together in one place, with one goal — growing Kansas agriculture. 

Last year’s virtual Summit was able to reach Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses in a new way, especially for the individual sector breakout session discussions. Those sector breakout sessions will again be held via Zoom, with a strong emphasis on collaborative discussion. The individual meetings will vary based on the needs and interests of each sector.
