RUSSELL - The next art show opens with a reception at the Deines Cultural Center, Russell, on Friday from 5-7 p.m. 

The "SuSann Decker: Retrospective" is a memorial show brought to us by her daughter, Alisha.&nbsp;

SuSann Decker was an accomplished artist who worked in a variety of mediums. She specialized in portraits “so real, they are aglow with color and light.” She passed on May 31, 2019, in Scottsdale, AZ where she was retired. Her grandparents lived on Van Houton on the outskirts of Russell. Her parents were Harold and Jane Brumley who also recently passed. 

Accomplished in oils, acrylics, and porcelain, SuSann's passion was stirring the elusive qualities of watercolor. Her paintings hang in private and public collections, with showings in Phoenix, Arizona, and Oregon. She was a member of the exclusive Oregon Watercolor Society. In addition, she was one of only a few U.S. artists who has mastered porcelain portraits. Two of her porcelain portraits were selected to represent Oregon at the World Organization of China Painters' museum in Oklahoma City.

SuSann Decker’s show is at the Deines from August 6 through September 3. 

The Deines is located at 820 N. Main in Russell. We are open Tuesday through Friday 12-5p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

The Heartland Community Foundation is hosting a Strategic Doing event in August, just for local teenagers.

The aim is to engage area high schoolers and find out what they think would make local communities even stronger. Teenagers notice things adults and community leaders don’t notice, and Heartland wants to hear their big ideas.&nbsp;

The Ellis County Teen Talkback will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., Aug. 11&nbsp;at the Hays Public Library in the upstairs young adult room. Pizza and soda will be served. All teens who attend will be entered into a drawing to win an Amazon gift card.&nbsp;

High schoolers from Hays High, Ellis High, Victoria High, Thomas More Prep-Marian, or those who are home schooled are invited to attend and share their thoughts.

The Strategic Doing aspect will encourage collaboration and action steps, if warranted, but the key objective is to gather feedback and opinion about the strengths and gaps in local community. The feedback gathered will be shared with community leaders and applicable organizations.

Strategic Doing events are supported by the Dane G. Hansen Foundation in all 26 northwest Kansas counties and facilitated by community foundations. Participation in the Ellis County Teen Talkback would be an activity to include on students' resume or in scholarship applications.&nbsp;

“We know teenagers are busy, but we’re hoping they can set aside a little bit of time to come and tell us what they’d like to see in Ellis County. They can dream big – any idea is welcome. We just want to hear from them,” said Sarah Meitner, executive director at the Heartland Community Foundation. “We hope to engage teenagers more regularly at the Heartland Community Foundation.”&nbsp;

Meitner also noted some teenagers are already familiar with the Heartland Community Foundation’s grant process. The foundation awarded more than $5,000 last fall to a teenager who applied for an audio-visual project. It also awarded more than $17,000 to two teen groups in its spring cycle for a project in Ellis County and one in Trego County.&nbsp;

The Hays Public Library Foundation is hosting a Wine &amp; Cheese Fundraiser&nbsp; at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Hays Public Library.&nbsp;

The event will begin with a wine and cheese social hour, followed by a presentation highlighting rural Kansas from Huck Boyd Institute Director Ron Wilson. The evening also will include a raffle.

The Hays Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 to serve as a source for funding emergent and unexpected needs and events associated with the library. In the past the foundation has raised private donations to fund the exterior of the 2004 remodel, and most recently, the foundation contributed to the purchase of the bookmobile and to the project to remodel the library.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Tickets are available beginning Monday. They cost $30 and can be purchased at the library or online at <a href="http://hayslibrary.org/event">hayslibrary.org/event</a>. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system due to a scheduled valve replacement. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it's the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory. Laboratory testing samples collected from Ellis County Rural Water District No. 1C indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. Rural &amp; Remote Director Kade Wilcox confirmed recently the keynote speaker
for a Rural &amp; Remote Summit: The Future of Work.

Paul Hill is an Extension professor for Utah
State University where he leads economic development educational programs in rural counties
through the Rural Online Initiative program that he founded in 2018.

He is a past recipient of the
Utah Governor’s Medal for Science Technology as well as 25 other state and national awards
for his innovative programs, impacts, research and publications.

Hill and his team are implementing a remote work education program and have real-world experience of
how remote work has impacted rural communities in Utah and other states.


This free event is open to anyone interested in how remote working is impacting rural
communities in the northwest region of Kansas. The summit will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 23 in Hays.


“Our target audience for the summit includes community leaders, employers and individuals
that are curious if remote work may be a good fit for them. We will have breakout sessions
available for those wanting to participate in our program, and those wanting to bring Rural &amp;
Remote to their community,” said Gretchin Staples, regional program coordinator.


Rural &amp; Remote is an initiative of the NWK Economic Innovation Center, INC and was started in
the spring 2019. For more than years, Rural &amp; Remote has helped train and connect northwest
Kansas residents to remote job opportunities with customized skills training and job placement
support.


Melissa Rickford, Atwood, a Rawlins County resident, contacted Rural &amp; Remote through
their website <a href="http://www.ruralandremote.org">www.ruralandremote.org</a> and enrolled in the January 2021 Remote Work
Certification course.

“It has seriously changed my entire life,” she says from the comfort of her
home office on a sunny afternoon. “The company I work for makes me feel good about what I’m
doing every day, and it is challenging work with so much room for growth.”


“Through Rural &amp; Remote, you get the training and you gain that collaboration with the right
connections,” she said. “You have to do the work, but they help open the doors to opportunities.
Your career is not based on your location. It’s based on your skill. With the right connections and
pathways, you can achieve your greatest career goals.”

asphalt overlay project will take place between Gold Course Road and Spring Hill
Road. 

The 1100 block of Ellis Avenue will be closed to through traffic. This project
will begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The estimated completion date is
Thursday, pending weather conditions. Motorists traveling in the
affected closure area should use alternate routes of travel until the project is
completed.

This includes the community of Antonino but does not include the city of Hays. This advisory is not related to COVID-19. Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice: &nbsp; * If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. &nbsp; * Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water. &nbsp; * Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker. &nbsp; * Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. &nbsp; * Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians. The advisory took effect on Monday and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.

The Foundation is offering access to a four-part virtual course entitled “Raise Money: The Guide to Unapologetic Fundraising for Your Nonprofit” at no cost to any board or staff member of a nonprofit organization in the 26 counties it serves. A one-hour virtual coaching session will be held at 1:30 p.m. every Thursday in August. In addition, participants will have access to a library of fundraising videos full of tips and ideas that are practical and easy to implement.

The course and videos are by Nancy Jackson and Jenna Goodman, founders of Generous Change, a Lawrence-based company focused on assisting all kinds of nonprofit organizations and universities with fundraising.&nbsp;

The course will include a total of 20 videos, each with a “Do One Thing!” challenge. Jackson and Goodman will share new tools and tweaks to existing practices to make fundraising more fun and more effective. During the interactive coaching sessions, the two will answer questions and suggest solutions for tough fundraising challenges.

Module 1 covers fundraising fundamentals and how to make time for fundraising. Module 2 is about the art of conversation with donors. Module 3 addresses how to ask for support from different types of donors. Module 4 covers the need to plan and persist and includes step-by-step instructions for creating an annual fundraising plan.

Participants will also have ongoing access to the library of videos that address questions about development and working with donors.

Jackson and Goodman have a combined 30 years of fundraising experience. As staff and volunteers, they have personally raised more than $70 million for arts, education, and environmental causes.&nbsp;

'Let's Walk Water Wednesday' set for next month in Hays

Luray Community PRIDE Inc. has announced the 55th annual Luray Friendship Day event will be
held in downtown Luray on Sunday, Sep.5. Kicking it off is the Relay for Life lunch stand
opening up at 10:00am, the parade and car/truck and tractor show registration at 11:30am followed by
the parade at 1:00pm and the car/truck and tractor show at 2:00pm. The Luray Fire Department will be
hosting a Cornhole Tournament, registration starting after the parade and closing at 2:20pm,
tournament starting at 2:30pm (24 team limit).

held in downtown Luray on Sunday, Sep.5. Kicking it off is the Relay for Life lunch stand
opening up at 10:00am, the parade and car/truck and tractor show registration at 11:30am followed by
the parade at 1:00pm and the car/truck and tractor show at 2:00pm. The Luray Fire Department will be
hosting a Cornhole Tournament, registration starting after the parade and closing at 2:20pm,
tournament starting at 2:30pm (24 team limit).
Bring your family and friends to experience Luray Friendship Day with other activities including
inflatables, turtle races, face painting, trivia, a medallion hunt, kids tractor pedal pull (ages 4-13), laser
tag, beer garden, snow cones, car/truck and tractor show, 50/50 raffle, Luray Pride Train, Luray

55th annual Luray Friendship day set for September

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started a field survey on a portion of K-383 in Norton and Phillips counties.

Crews are working along 13 miles of K-383 from Almena to near W 800 Road in Phillips County to update survey mapping and drainage structures. Activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects work to be complete by Oct. 1.

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed. Doug Roeder of Wilson and Co. will oversee the survey for KDOT.

Bright Minds Academy, 2106 Wheatland Ave., will have a lemonade stand from 7:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

A free-will donation will be taken to benefit the Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center.

The mission of the Child Advocacy Center is to heal the trauma of abuse to children and adults through prevention, support and service.

Instructors wanted for Hays Rec programs

Beginning Thursday, various Hays streets will receive a seal coat. See the map above and online at <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/ImageRepository/Document?documentId=4071">www.haysusa.com</a> for locations.

On the date scheduled for treatment, all cars need to be moved from the street by 8 a.m. Streets being sealed will be closed from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Access can be achieved in cases of emergency. Parking on adjacent streets is recommended during the daytime. Parking in driveways is OK if you do not plan on moving the vehicle between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. 

Please have all lawn watering devices turned off the evening before the scheduled date. Please help keep the streets clean and dry for a smooth and lasting project. 

Notification of adjacent properties will be made door to door 24 hours in advance of the work. 

This project is scheduled to be completed within two weeks (pending weather conditions). 

The city of Hays regrets any inconvenience this may cause to the public. If there are any questions, call the Office of Project Management at 785-628-7350.

Healing After Loss of Suicide is a&nbsp;free community support group for people who have lost a loved one to suicide. This group offers a place to connect with others who are dealing with this highly specialized grief recovery process in a confidential and safe but informal environment.

The group will meet at 5:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 21 for social time and a light snack at 103 E. 27th St., Suite C. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.

Group meeting participants are welcome to bring their own drinks and snacks.

Face masks are encouraged for the health and safety of all.

The event will include prostate cancer screenings, skin cancer screenings, colon cancer screening kits, body mass index assessments and more. Masks will be required for all screening staff and screening participants.

The screening will be held at First United Methodist&nbsp;Church on Seventh street, north side.

Free cancer screening event scheduled in Hays

“Combat Artist” is Fort Hays State University student Delvin M. Goode’s master of fine art's in ceramics thesis exhibition.

It is showing now through July 22 in the Patricia A. Schmidt Gallery in the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art at FHSU.

Viewing hours will be 10 a.m. to 2 pm. Monday through Thursday.

A thesis video also will be showing.&nbsp;

On Monday, construction will begin in Hays on Phase 2 of 230th Avenue and 55th Street intersection project, which consists of new curb and gutter, and concrete pavement for the intersection &nbsp;and 230th Avenue approximately ¼ mile north. &nbsp;

During Phase 2, 230th Avenue will be closed north of 55th Street for the remainder of the project. 

The only allowable movement through the intersection of 230th Avenue and 55th Street will be a right turn from northbound 230th to eastbound 55th Street. 

&nbsp;Access to Celebration Community Church will be from 55th Street only and access to businesses and areas along 230th Street north of 55th Street will be from the north via Feedlot Road. &nbsp;<a href="https://www.haysusa.com/ImageRepository/Document?documentId=4064" target="_blank">See location map.</a>
