closed between Elm Street and Lincoln. &nbsp;As such, 27th Street Traffic

Movement of a quarter million people joined by local participants in Hays

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide can be prevented. Volunteers from the Hays area are joining the quarter of a million people who are walking in towns across the United States to draw attention to the fight for suicide prevention. The annual Hays Area Out of the Darkness Community Walk, hosted by the High Plains Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, Sept. 18, at Municipal Park in Hays. On-site registration begins at 1&nbsp; p.m. Preregistration is available at <a href="http://www.afsp.org/hays">www.afsp.org/hays</a>. This walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20 percent by the year 2025.&nbsp;

“Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that by walking we will draw attention to this issue and keep other families from experiencing a suicide loss. Our ultimate goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” said Kyle Carlin, AFSP Greater Kansas Volunteer.&nbsp;

The Hays Area Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness Overnight, Community and Campus Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts.&nbsp;

“These walks are about turning hope into action,” said <a href="https://afsp.org/about-afsp/robert-gebbia/">AFSP CEO Robert Gebbia</a>. “The research has shown us how to fight suicide, and if we keep up the fight, the science is only going to get better and our culture will get smarter about mental health. With the efforts of our courageous volunteers, and a real investment from our nation’s leaders, we hope to significantly reduce the suicide rate in the United States.”&nbsp;

Western Kansans to walk to fight suicide 

SALINA — During the month of September, National Hunger Action Month, all 10 24/7 Travel Stores locations across Kansas will collect monetary donations for local food banks at the register and match donations for the first $30,000 donated.

Participating food banks include Genesis Food Pantry of Sherman County, Genesis Food Pantry of Thomas County, Trego County Food Pantry, St. Joseph Food Pantry in Hays, Russell County Food Pantry, McPherson County Food Bank, Salina Emergency Aid &amp; Food Bank, Abilene Area Food &amp; Clothing Bank, and Community Health Ministry.

Ted Augustine, 24/7 Travel Stores manager of growth &amp; development,&nbsp; believes strongly in the power of community support. “September is Hunger Action Month, so we are calling our customers to action alongside us," Augustsine said. "If you have been thinking about donating, now is the time, as 24/7 Travel Stores will match it dollar-for-dollar for the first $30,000 donated. 

"This will be the fourth annual Food Bank Fill-Up event, which has generated over $100,000 for Kansas Food Banks over the last three years. Please come out and see us and help us raise $60,000 to fight hunger,” said Augustine.

Each food bank can use the funds raised during this event in their own way – whether for operating costs, perishable groceries, or other needs.

Last year, 24/7 Travel Stores donated $57,996.25 to local food banks.

For five weeks this fall, the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) will be offering a free webinar series designed to provide more insight into innovative livestock marketing plans and strategies. The five-part webinar series will be held Wednesday evenings, from October 6 through November 3, at 7:00 p.m.

“In order to support their customers, successful seedstock operations are continually seeking improvement, whether it be the genetic quality of the livestock they are selling, or the marketing programs and services offered to customers,” said Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. Innovative programming and educational opportunities help Kansas’ farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses grow and expand and serve as economic engines in their communities.

Through the webinar series,&nbsp;Marketing Like a Champion, participants can expect to learn the basics of marketing strategies used in the livestock industry. Rachel Cutrer of Ranch House Designs, Inc. and B.R. Cutrer, Inc. will cover building your brand name, identifying your target customer, and building international markets. Crystal Blin of Hundred Acre Media will discuss content calendars, Facebook advertising, and strategies to grow your email list. Abram Mertz with Livestock Direct will discuss how to optimize your marketing strategy including how to transition from marketing to sales.

There’s no question
 lives have changed over the past several months. Work has evolved as well, which is why Rural &amp; Remote will be focusing on the future of work at its summit later this month. 

The Summit, which will take place Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Hilton Garden Inn
 in Hays, provides an opportunity to learn how remote work is impacting rural communities and the resources for free training available to Northwest Kansas residents. The free event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Gretchin Staples,
 Rural &amp; Remote NWKS program coordinator, said 100 participants attended a similar event in 2019. This year, organizers hope to double that amount.&nbsp;

“At that time, the
 program was brand new,” Staples noted. “Now, the program has been working in Northwest Kansas and we can discuss the opportunities available, but also the successes that we’ve seen and the impact it is having on our region’s economy.”&nbsp;

Rural &amp; Remote is
 an initiative launched in northwest Kansas in 2019 that offers training for residents of the region to secure professional opportunities in any geographic location while living in the rural area they call home. So far, there have been more than 100 graduates
 from the program, with 21 professionals placed in remote careers. Currently, there are 15 active job seekers.&nbsp;

Paul Hill, of the
 Rural Online Initiative in Utah, will be the keynote speaker at the event. Utah’s program is statewide, versus regional-based in Kansas. Staples said Rural &amp; Remote has worked with Hill and the ROI through the program’s educational component.

“The information
 Paul will share that day will not just be talking about the concept of remote work,” Staples said. “It will be real-world examples and practical, applicable information based upon the results they are seeing.”

Professionals interested
 in pursuing a remote career are not the only ones encouraged to attend. Economic development professionals and business professionals will also benefit from the day.&nbsp;

“It really is about
 the future of work,” said Kade Wilcox, Rural &amp; Remote Program Director. “Work as we know it is changing, and Northwest Kansas is not getting left behind. The summit is a great opportunity to walk away with a lot of insight on how to keep up with what’s coming
 next and how the pandemic is changing the landscape of work."

Breakout sessions
 will feature additional information about the training available as well as how community members can support and businesses can benefit as well.&nbsp;

Remote Work Summit scheduled this month in Hays

COLBY — About 450 contestants from 26 Kansas and Oklahoma colleges will compete in the annual Colby Community College National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Rodeo Sept. 17, 18 and 19 in the E.L. Garrett Arena at the Thomas County Fairgrounds.&nbsp;

Performances on Friday and Saturday begin at 7 p.m. The finals on Sunday featuring the top 10 in each event will start at 1 p.m.

Men’s events include bareback bronc riding, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping&nbsp;and&nbsp;bull riding.

The women will compete in breakaway roping, goat tying, team roping and barrel racing.

Tickets at the gate are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Fans under five years old will&nbsp;be admitted&nbsp;free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.

NIRA rodeo action coming to Colby this month

The new owner of the Victoria St. John’s Rest Home will hold an open house and public meeting to gain community input on use of the building and grounds. 

Jeff Pfeifer will open the rest home to the public at 5:30 pm Tuesday for anyone interested in walking through the facility.&nbsp; The community meeting will start at 6:30 pm at the rest home. Pfeifer is seeking input on potential uses for the property, concerns regarding needed changes to the property, and unique features of the property that should be preserved.

Contractors begin work on Lincoln Draw tunnel this week

Returning to northwest Kansas the following Sunday, Sept. 19, are a popular progressive western swing trio from Texas. With over 15 years of touring, The Quebe Sisters have delivered their authentic triple fiddle and three-part harmony sound to the concert halls and festivals of North America and Europe. The sisters will take stage at the Oakley High School Auditorium at 3 p.m. CDT, Sunday, Sept. 19.

The USD 489 Early Childhood Connections program will celebrate its thirty-year anniversary with a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting on Thursday, Sept. 16,&nbsp;at 9:30 a.m.

USD 489 Early Childhood Connections is a&nbsp;child development, parenting and family services program for pregnant women and families.&nbsp; The program integrates Parents as Teachers, Early Head Start, Head Start and Preschool-Aged At-Risk Program.&nbsp; There is no cost for families receiving Connections services.&nbsp; The program provides services to over 380 children, and their families, in Ellis, Rush, Rooks and Russell Counties. The celebration will be held at the USD 489 Early Childhood Complex located at 2501 E. 13th.&nbsp; In addition to the Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and refreshments, the program will have “birthday party” activities for the children currently enrolled in the program.&nbsp; All celebration activities will be held outside.&nbsp; The ribbon cutting and refreshments are open to the public. ELLIS — The Walter P. Chrysler Boyhood Home &amp; Museum would like to announce they were awarded a grant totaling $717.10.

The announcement was made on social media.

 It will be used to purchase new shutters for the home after it gets a fresh new coat of paint.
