The Hays Fire Department will be inspecting and flow testing fire hydrants on Monday in the area from Madison to Hall between 41st and Interstate 70 also Hall to Country Lane between 27th and 33rd. 

This is part of a coordinated effort by the City of Hays to inspect all fire hydrants in the city and flush all water mains annually. Inspecting fire hydrants ensures that the valves operate properly and that there is no damage or obstructions that will prevent or interfere with the prompt use of fire hydrants in an emergency. Firefighters are also checking the pressure and volume of water mains in each neighborhood for firefighting purposes. 

The associated flushing of water mains allows chlorine to be distributed throughout the system to eliminate bio-filming in the water mains. Slight discoloration of the water supply may be encountered although there will be no health risks to the consumer.

&nbsp;Landscape irrigation typically accounts for about 50% of total household water use. This can be reduced significantly by using the principles of WaterSmart landscaping. The WaterSmart Perennial Demonstration Garden at 601 Main in Hays serves to educate the public on smart practices that reduce the amount of water required for irrigation purposes.&nbsp;

One important WaterSmart principle is to use drought-tolerant plants that do not require much water to perform at their best. This garden provides opportunities for gardeners to be introduced to select drought-tolerant plant varieties and observe how these plants perform under our local conditions.&nbsp;

In this garden, there are about 70 drought-tolerant plants representing 44 different cultivars.&nbsp;

Plants are identified with labels to indicate common name, scientific name, and cultivation tips. When plants are in their prime, look for enlarged plant labels. These contain additional information and a QR link to the Missouri Botanical Garden where you can learn how the plant grows, how to cultivate it, and much more.&nbsp;

A well-established drought-tolerant garden may still need some irrigation, especially during hot windy conditions. Any new perennial planting will require consistent moisture until the roots are well established (usually two to three years) including during dry periods of winter.&nbsp;

Consider using captured rain water in rain barrels or creating natural rainwater divergent methods. This demonstration garden uses water from a large rain barrel which collects runoff water from the roof of this building.&nbsp;

Of course, it’s more than just watering plants correctly… it is the combination of sound gardening principles. Used together, you can create a garden that not only conserves water but is creative and beautiful. Here are some more important WaterSmart Gardening Principles:&nbsp;

Select plants according to the amount of sunlight or shade they will get. Know your planting zone (Hays is in Growing Zone 6A). Take into account the mature plant size when laying out your garden so that you do not crowd the roots. A nice root structure is healthier for the plant and, when spaced properly, plants will not compete for soil moisture.&nbsp;

Amend your garden bed with organic matter to help loosen heavy clay soils and increase&nbsp;water absorption. Get a soil test to find out if your soil is needing any nutrient amendments.&nbsp;

Throughout the growing season, water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep, more drought-tolerant roots. After your plants are established, only water when the soil at the root depth is dry. You can use a soil moisture probe to check this.&nbsp;

A 2-4” layer of organic mulch decreases soil temps, limits evaporation, discourages weeds, and eventually breaks down to improve the soil. Gravel or rock should not be used over plant roots. They compact the soil removing the tiny air spaces within the soil for oxygen and moisture that the roots need. Rock also gets hot and can lead to root and foliage dehydration.&nbsp;

Select low water use or drought-tolerant plants if possible. If some plants are “thirstier” and require a bit more water on a regular basis, group those plants together.&nbsp;

Proper pruning, weeding, fertilizing, watering, and insect/disease control are important to maintain the health of your garden. Healthier plants can better tolerate occasional droughts.&nbsp;

The Garden is located on the south side of the Ellis County Extension Office at 601 Main in Hays. It was planned, planted, and is maintained by the Ellis County Master Gardeners. Partial funding was provided by the City of Hays Water Department for the purpose of demonstrating and promoting wise water use in the landscape.&nbsp;

The Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus regretfully has had
to cancel our barbershop show for 2021. Because of health concerns due to the
coronavirus outbreak, Fort Hays State University has denied us use of Beach/Schmidt
Performing Arts Center and in the interest of the health of our patrons and our
members we feel that it is in everyone’s best interest that we take this step.
We did look at the possibility of other venues, but we didn’t feel that they would
allow us to provide the quality of the show we usually do and may put others at
risk. As difficult as this decision was, we feel this action was necessary for
all concerned.

Be assured, we will be back next year with another great
show tentatively scheduled for April 2, 2022. We will publicize
the date as we get closer to that time. Fort those who purchased ads or tickets
for last year’s show, we will honor those ads and issue new tickets at our show
next year. We greatly appreciate the patronage the people of Western Kansas
have given us. We promise that we will be back and providing unique barbershop
style music again.

While we may not be able to put on a full show, we do invite
organizations, business and communities to contact us if they would like us to
sing at an event. We are always happy to help you celebrate whatever event you
are putting on.

On Thursday, May 20, 2021 we will be having an
open house for anyone, male or female, wanting to consider joining us in
singing in our unique style of A Cappella Harmony, we invite you to join us at
7:30 pm at the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 27th and Fort
in Hays, Ks. We encourage young singers to consider joining us as well, with
their parents’ permission of course. We have members that travel 1 ½ to 2 hours
each week just to come join us for rehearsal so that we can provide our
wonderful brand of music to the area so there is most likely someone in your
area that sings barbershop with us.

Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus cancels 2021 show

COLBY — Denver's Queen City Jazz Band is the Western Plains Arts Association's final concert for the 51st season. &nbsp;The traditional jazz band was founded more than 60 years ago, and is recognized across the nation for playing outstanding traditional, Dixieland, gospel and spiritual music. &nbsp;The group has also toured widely across Europe. A mid-March Colorado blizzard postponed the concert to a later date and an alternate Colby venue than originally scheduled. Colby Community College's Cultural Arts Center will be the concert location for the QCJB at 3 p.m.,&nbsp;Sunday, May &nbsp;2.&nbsp;Admission is by Western Plains Arts season ticket or adults $20, students $10 at the door. &nbsp;Per venue policy, social distancing and precautionary mask wearing will be required for this event, and a limited number of masks will be available upon entrance to the Cultural Arts Center's Frahm Theater. In addition to businesses and individual donors across northwest Kansas, Queen City Jazz Band is made possible through special funding by the Dane Hansen Memorial Foundation, Lenora; the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation, Bird City; and the Thomas County Community Foundation. Bill Clark, tubist and band leader, joined the QCJB in 1976 and became the leader in 1985. A retired University of Colorado music professor, Clark set a goal while a 1960's high school student to one day play in the already popular band. Band members come from strong music performance and/or music eduction background and all have played with a number of local bands prior to joining QCJB. Instrumentalists include Kevin Bollinger, trumpet; John Bredenberg, clarinet and saxophone; Eric Staffelt, trombone; Hank Troy, piano; Rory Thomas, banjo; and Tony Pantelis, drums. Their gospel, blues and jazz vocalist Wende Harston has sang with the band since 1992. The band has released numerous recordings over the years.  </figure>WPAACOLBY — Denver's Queen City Jazz Band is the Western Plains Arts Association's final concert for the 51st season. &nbsp;The traditional jazz band was founded more than 60 years ago, and is recognized across the nation for playing outstanding traditional, Dixieland, gospel and spiritual music. &nbsp;The group has also toured widely across Europe. A mid-March Colorado blizzard postponed the concert to a later date and an alternate Colby venue than originally scheduled. Colby Community College's Cultural Arts Center will be the concert location for the QCJB at 3 p.m.,&nbsp;Sunday, May &nbsp;2.&nbsp;Admission is by Western Plains Arts season ticket or adults $20, students $10 at the door. &nbsp;Per venue policy, social distancing and precautionary mask wearing will be required for this event, and a limited number of masks will be available upon entrance to the Cultural Arts Center's Frahm Theater. In addition to businesses and individual donors across northwest Kansas, Queen City Jazz Band is made possible through special funding by the Dane Hansen Memorial Foundation, Lenora; the Greater Northwest Kansas Community Foundation, Bird City; and the Thomas County Community Foundation. Bill Clark, tubist and band leader, joined the QCJB in 1976 and became the leader in 1985. A retired University of Colorado music professor, Clark set a goal while a 1960's high school student to one day play in the already popular band. Band members come from strong music performance and/or music eduction background and all have played with a number of local bands prior to joining QCJB. Instrumentalists include Kevin Bollinger, trumpet; John Bredenberg, clarinet and saxophone; Eric Staffelt, trombone; Hank Troy, piano; Rory Thomas, banjo; and Tony Pantelis, drums. Their gospel, blues and jazz vocalist Wende Harston has sang with the band since 1992. The band has released numerous recordings over the years. The garden, located at the K-State Agricultural Research Center south of Hays, was established in 2016 with funds provided by a grant from the Heartland Community Foundation.&nbsp;

The garden area measures approximately 12’ x 20’.&nbsp; The soil was tested, prepared and a fall garden was planted in 2016, with its official debut during Horticulture Night at the Ag Research Center, September 20, 2016.

Work resumed during the spring of 2017 when a fence was built and compost bins were constructed out of pallets on the east end of the garden plot. Spring crops of onions, potatoes and beans were planted, as well as perennial crops of rhubarb and asparagus. Other vegetables that have been grown are radishes, beets, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, carrots and eggplant.

The purpose and goal of the Backyard Garden Project is to demonstrate to the general public how to start and maintain a vegetable garden in a smaller space like a backyard area. A composting station is also maintained as part of this project. This garden provides an opportunity for Master Gardeners to show the various crops that can be grown in a small area. It also gives Master Gardeners opportunities to experiment with best practices in fertilization, watering, weeding, mulching and producing and using compost in a garden to optimize crop production.

The Backyard Garden committee decides yearly which crops to plant and determines the layout of the garden plot. It decides on any new ideas or methods to try for the new season. Several Master Gardener volunteers help with the planning, planting and maintenance throughout the year. This garden project would not be possible or successful without the hard work and dedication of this group.

The public is welcome and encouraged to stop by and visit the garden’s progress during the growing season at the Ag Research Center.&nbsp;There is signage on the east end of the garden plot concerning composting and a Kansas Garden Guide booklet in the attached mailbox for reference. Gardening questions can be addressed by the Master Gardeners or the Extension Horticulturist by calling the Cottonwood District Extension Office in Hays at 785-628-9430..

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin work on a pair of bridge repair projects along Interstate 70 in Russell County the week of April 26.

Crews will be repairing the westbound bridges located between mile markers 196 and 200 near Dorrance. Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the construction zones with a decreased speed limit of 60 mph. Minor delays not exceeding 5 minutes should be anticipated. KDOT expects work to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting.

Beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, the 500 block of East 11th will be closed to through traffic for pavement repairs. 

Repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the day Friday.

PRATT – A Kansas angler’s prized catch may actually be worth a prize this spring and summer. The first-ever Great Kansas Fishing Derby will run May 1 to July 31, 2021, with at least 500 specially tagged fish located in up to 37 public waterbodies in Kansas. 

The Great Kansas Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), Kansas Wildscape Foundation, the Bass Pro-Cabela’s Outdoor Fund and many local retailers across Kansas.

“The main goal is to get more people fishing. We had a lot of anglers join the party in 2020 and we want them to keep participating,” said David Breth, KDWPT sportfishing education coordinator. “We also want to make sure businesses know about their local fishing waters and just how many people visit these nearby fishing spots.”

Pre-registration is not required, and participation is free, though normal fishing license requirements remain in effect. Ksfishderby.com will also allow anglers and non-anglers to register to win additional prizes through weekly drawings.

Businesses across Kansas are supporting the Great Kansas Fishing Derby by providing prizes in the form of gift cards, merchandise and more – including a city zoo that has pledged an annual family pass. KDWPT will also contribute gift cards, which can be credited toward any department-issued license or permit, or magazine subscription. KDWPT gift cards are also honored at all Kansas state parks.

All participating waterbodies are open to the public and managed in whole or in-part by KDWPT. Also included in the list of participating waters are ponds and lakes currently enrolled in KDWPT’s Community Fisheries Assistance Program (CFAP). By leveraging funding from federal excise taxes on fishing equipment, KDWPT leases public access – at no additional cost to the public – to gorgeous waters that once required special county, community or city permits.

A complete list of waters with fish tagged for the Derby will be posted on&nbsp;<a href="https://beyond.fishing/derby/">ksfishderby.com</a>&nbsp;on April 30.

“We’ll have popular sportfish tagged, like bass, crappie and walleye,” said Breth. “We’ll also have some non-sportfish like carp, gar and drum. We have people who like to fish for them and a lot who also participate in bow fishing. There will probably be some big bluegill tagged because we’d love to see kids win some of these prizes, too.”

Most tagged fish will meet legal length limits and can be legally kept. However, anglers may release their catch if they first remove the tag (see&nbsp;<a href="https://beyond.fishing/derby/">ksfishderby.com</a>&nbsp;for instructions).

As part of the Kansas Masonic Foundation's statewide classic car raffle, the Hays Masonic Lodge is selling tickets for a chance to win a 1963 Ford Thunderbird Factory Roadster in incredible condition.&nbsp;

The car will be in Hays the last week in April, and Lewis Automotive Group has agreed to not only place the car on display in the showroom, but to <a href="https://www.lewisfordofhays.com/enter-to-win-a-1963-ford-thunderbird.htm">buy a raffle ticket for those who test drive any vehicle on April 27 through April 30.</a> The tickets are available now through March 2022 from area Masons or <a href="https://kansasmasonic.foundation/event/thunderbird-raffle/">online</a>. The car will also be downtown for the spring art walk on Friday, April 30.&nbsp;

The proceeds from each raffle ticket are divided with 75% or $15 of the $20 cost returning to the lodge to be used for charitable works in the community. Over the past five years, this raffle has returned more than $1 million dollars to lodges throughout the state. During last year's raffle, the Hays Masonic Lodge raised money for the Community Assistance Center and the Firefighter's Relief Association, donating $1,000 to each cause.

The lodge will retain none of the funds raised, so every dollar raised is done so for the community. Tim Miller, area Mason expressed his hope for the raffle, "The Hays Masonic Lodge has been put in a position to help fund a local community service, which we can't quite let out of the bag just yet, but we are excited to be able to support a program like this. We want to be able to support it on a continuing basis, so we really hope that the community rallies around this raffle."
