Healing Hearts to meet Thursday

MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture will host the state’s agriculture community in-person for its sixth annual Kansas Governor’s Summit on Agricultural Growth on Thursday, August 26, in Manhattan.

The 2021 Ag Growth Summit will be a blend of in-person events and online meetings. The Summit main event will be held at the Manhattan Conference Center with in-person attendance highly encouraged. For several weeks prior to the Summit, a series of virtual sector breakout sessions will lead up to the Summit main event.

The Kansas Ag Growth Summit is well known as a time when all of the agriculture industry sectors gather together in one place, with one goal — growing Kansas agriculture. 

Last year’s virtual Summit was able to reach Kansas farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses in a new way, especially for the individual sector breakout session discussions. Those sector breakout sessions will again be held via Zoom, with a strong emphasis on collaborative discussion. The individual meetings will vary based on the needs and interests of each sector. Healing After Loss of Suicide is a&nbsp;free community support group for people who have lost a loved one to suicide. This group offers a place to connect with others who are dealing with this highly specialized grief recovery process in a confidential and safe but informal environment.

The group will meet at 5:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 7 for social time and a light snack at 103 E. 27th St., Suite C. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. The special program will be "Healing through Creativity."

In the southeast corner of the intersection of 13th and Fort, there is a small Pentagon-shaped garden bed. It lies nestled in front of the granite stones of the Veterans Memorial on the lawn of the Courthouse. This Red, White and Blue Memory Garden is a tribute to all those Ellis County citizens who lost their lives in service to our country while in the military. &nbsp;

In 2016, a small group of Ellis County Master Gardeners selected and planted perennial plants in the garden to follow the Red, White and Blue theme and to provide all season color. The garden was recently refurbished to revive its vigor.&nbsp;

White Immortality Irises are featured in the center of the garden. These irises are re-blooming, flowering in the Spring and again in late summer. Surrounding the iris bed is a circle of perennial salvia, ‘Victoria Blue’ and ‘May Night’ cultivars. Red Drift Roses spread into the front and rear corners. White Gaura was added this year.&nbsp;

Laying around the perimeter of the bed are several handcrafted concrete blocks inscribed with the name of the garden as well as the words “Planted with Gratitude and Respect”. &nbsp;

In acknowledgment of the US Gold Star Act, a gold-painted concrete star lies at the apex of this Red, White, and Blue Memory Garden. Golden Yarrow plants were added to the garden to accentuate the Gold Star. Some readers may be aware of the significance of the “Gold Star”. A&nbsp;Gold Star Lapel Button&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States">United States</a>&nbsp;is an official decoration authorized by an&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_of_Congress">Act of Congress</a>&nbsp;in 1947 that is issued to the direct&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_of_kin">next of kin</a>&nbsp;family members of&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military">service members</a>&nbsp;who died in&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I">World War I</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II">World War II</a>&nbsp;and subsequent armed hostilities in which the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Forces_of_the_United_States">Armed Forces of the United States</a>&nbsp;has been engaged.&nbsp;

Visiting the garden is particularly humbling during patriotic national holidays when volunteers from the VFW place one flag around the Veterans Memorial for each Ellis County resident who died serving in the military. One can’t help but feel sincere gratitude for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Additionally, we recognize the efforts given by volunteers today to maintain this memorial tribute. It is heart-warming to see that the volunteer spirit within Ellis County remains strong.

TOPEKA – This Fourth of July weekend, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and Tourism (KDWP) urges individuals who may be on Kansas lakes to be aware of potential blue-green algae and to understand that harmful algal blooms are unpredictable and may develop rapidly.&nbsp;

If you observe a scum, a paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments, or the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. &nbsp;These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

KDHE, in conjunction with KDWP, has also issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.

Lemonade stands support ARC Park construction 

COLBY — The "Sounds of Freedom," a 17-member music performance team within the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division Band of the Kansas Army&nbsp;<a>National Guard</a>&nbsp;will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, in Colby's Fike Park. The show includes patriotic selections, marches, and other popular music.

Under the command of Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jim Walker, the band is comprised of citizen-soldiers who contribute skills, talents, and experiences to the unit and to the Kansas Army National Guard. Like all Guard units, the band meets one weekend a month and 15 days during the summer to rehearse and fulfill military training requirements.

As musical ambassadors, the 35th&nbsp;Infantry Division Band represents the governor at civilian and military functions throughout Kansas, performing at parades, concerts, and political inaugurations. In addition to Colby, the summer concert tour includes Pratt, Dodge City, Jetmore, Hutchinson, Hoisington, Larned, Logan, Greensburg, Fort Hays State University, Wakeeney, Stockton, Great Bend and Wichita.

There is no admission charge. Guests are invited to take a lawn chair or blanket.

TOPEKA —&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of Smith County Rural Water District No. 1 public water supply system. This advisory affects residents located South of 140 Road and East of M Road. This advisory does not include the community of Smith Center and is not related to COVID-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on June 30 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

WICHITA —&nbsp;The American Red Cross&nbsp;continues to experience a severe blood shortage&nbsp;that is negatively affecting blood product availability across the country.&nbsp;Donors&nbsp;of all&nbsp;blood types – especially type O –&nbsp;are urged&nbsp;to make an appointment to give&nbsp;now&nbsp;and&nbsp;help ensure hospital shelves are stocked with blood products over the Fourth of July holiday&nbsp;and beyond.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Right now,&nbsp;the Red Cross is working around the clock to provide blood products to hospitals&nbsp;responding to an&nbsp;unusually&nbsp;high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and resulting transplants.&nbsp;As a result of the blood shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In addition, while summer is traditionally a time when blood donations decline, this year is particularly challenging as many Americans&nbsp;receive their vaccinations and resume summer activities after more than a year of limited interactions and travel, leading to lower donor turnout. The need for blood doesn’t take a&nbsp;holiday&nbsp;break −&nbsp;patients still depend on lifesaving&nbsp;transfusions.&nbsp;

Red Cross still facing severe blood shortage 

GREAT BEND - Barton Community College (BCC) has unveiled an impressive array of textile art titled “Material Pulses: Seven Viewpoints,” which is an exhibition focused on the art of quilt-making. It includes 17 works by seven fiber artists representing the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Shafer Gallery Director Dave Barnes said the quilt exhibit is a perennial favorite of many gallery-goers.

“We have an established tradition of showing quilts at the Shafer Gallery,” he said. “There is something about the ethos of quilt-making that shouts the American experience and the resilience of community values. Hard work, caregiving, the creative use of resources and banding together for a common goal are all aspects of the quilting heritage. Nothing quite illustrates the Shafer Gallery tag line ‘Where the Old West Meets the Future’ so well as the ever-evolving tradition of quilt making.”

Curated by internationally renowned artist and teacher Nancy Crow, “Material Pulses” contributes to the dialogue of contemporary textile arts.&nbsp;

“Material Pulses is the culmination of my mission to bring back the majesty, strength, and energy of textile works, particularly large quilts,” she said.

The exhibition features quilts, mixed media, and installation work. Quilts of up to 101 inches high will be featured for dramatic scale of an art form that is often relegated to its functional qualities. The artists investigate color, pattern, and size through traditional and experimental quilt-making applications. The curator balances a focus on shapes with oversized works, exploring excellence in machine quilting and surface design.

Barnes said this year’s show has a unique focus.&nbsp;

“With the help of the National Endowment for the Humanities, we are proud to show quilts that come to us from the premiere Exhibits USA traveling art exhibit program,” he said. “The work in this exhibit has been made from a Fine Arts perspective and we hope they will give our visitors a whole new and very contemporary quilt experience. We appreciate the importance and specialness of our area quilters and as part of this exhibit, we are planning on hosting some special events just for them as part of this show.”

This exhibition is toured by Exhibits USA, a national program of the Mid-America Arts Alliance (M-AAA). Exhibits USA sends more than 25 exhibitions on tour to over 100 small-and mid-sized communities every year. According to M-AAA, it aims to “strengthen and support artists, cultural organizations, and communities throughout our region and beyond.”

The exhibit will run through Oct. 20 The Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

While Americans&nbsp;face challenges unlike any other time in our history,&nbsp;High Plains Public Radio&nbsp;in partnership with&nbsp;StoryCorps, the national nonprofit dedicated to recording and preserving personal stories, invites people to take part in meaningful conversations that are recorded for history. With support from the&nbsp;Corporation for Public Broadcasting, HPPR&nbsp;is one of six stations/networks across the country selected to take part in&nbsp;StoryCorps’ &nbsp;One Small Step&nbsp;initiative to facilitate and broadcast conversations with Americans of opposing viewpoints. With participant permission, these conversations are preserved for future generations at the&nbsp;American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.&nbsp;

High Plains Public Radio&nbsp;plans to broadcast edited versions of select submissions from its local communities.

“We’re very excited to join in this project, and hope to bring many High Plains voices to the table,” said HPPR Executive Director Will Murphy. “Public radio, and HPPR in particular, is about bringing people together for civil conversation, and this seemed like a great opportunity for area residents to talk&nbsp;with&nbsp;one another, rather than&nbsp;at&nbsp;one another.”

These communities can model this change for the rest of the country.”

Launched by StoryCorps in 2018 in response to growing division in the country, One Small Step is a nationwide initiative that provides two strangers who hold different views with the opportunity to take part in facilitated and recorded conversations—specifically to counteract intensifying hostility and to enable those who disagree to listen to each other with respect.&nbsp;Rather than spark additional partisan debates, One Small Step encourages answers to questions such as, “Was there a moment, event, or person in your life that shaped your political views?” and “What scares you most when you think about the future?”

High Plains Public Radio partners with StoryCorps to bridge American divides

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society recently initiated 153 new members in a joint ceremony for 2020 and 2021.

David Slusky, president of KU’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter and associate professor of economics, presided at the virtual ceremony in May. The national secretary and CEO of Phi Beta Kappa, Frederick Lawrence, was a guest speaker. Jennifer Harrison, vice president of the chapter and director of the Business Leadership Program and the Jack Dicus Business Honors Program; Dietrich Earnhart, professor of economics and chapter historian, and Anne Wallen, secretary-treasurer and director of the Office of Fellowships, welcomed and congratulated the new initiates. Students received certificates and signed the register by appointment to allow for social distancing.

Sarah Crawford-Parker, director of the University Honors Program, was inducted as an honorary member of the chapter and gave an address on the value of the liberal arts and sciences.

Sam Steuart, a 2020 graduate and 2019 inductee, and Laura Phillips, a 2021 graduate and 2020 inductee, gave the student responses on the Phi Beta Kappa value of friendship.

Election to Phi Beta Kappa recognizes a student’s high academic achievement while pursuing a broad and substantive liberal arts curriculum. To be eligible for consideration for membership, students must be graduating seniors with a minimum grade-point average of 3.65 on a 4.0 scale, or be juniors with a minimum 3.9. Anonymous transcripts of candidates are reviewed holistically by a committee of Phi Beta Kappa faculty and staff members. For 2020, 47 seniors and 20 juniors were initiated. For 2021, 58 seniors and 28 juniors were initiated.

NW Kansas students among Phi Beta Kappa inductees at KU

MANHATTAN — A public hearing will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on June 30 at the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA), 1320 Research Park Dr. in Manhattan, regarding the issuance of a permanent statewide quarantine of weed species that have been designated noxious by federal regulation. 

The proposed quarantine would replace KDA’s existing Federal Noxious Weed Quarantine, which is expiring, and would prohibit all movement of items regulated pursuant to the quarantine into or within the state of Kansas.

As construction progresses on the reconstruction of 27th Street from Hall to Fort in Hays, the construction zone will advance eastward. 

&nbsp;On Tuesday, 27th Street will be opened from the Hall Street intersection to the entrance into Dillons and closed through the intersection of Canal Blvd. to just west of Elm Street.&nbsp;

As such, 27th Street traffic will be detoured using Elm Street and 29th Street or Walnut and 17th Street. &nbsp;Those two detour options are shown on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.haysusa.com/ImageRepository/Document?documentId=4035" target="_blank">above map</a>&nbsp;in blue and yellow respectively.

The reconstruction of 27th Street from Hall to Fort will progress steadily from west to east through the remainder of the year.

NORTON — Norton County Community Foundation has announced the participating organizations in its fourth annual Norton County MatchDay. 

MatchDay 2021 will be held on July 21 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Heaton Building in Norton.&nbsp;

This year’s match pool will be $70,000 and is generously provided by Norton County Community Foundation and the Jim and Lida Sharp Family.
