Camdyn Darrah is a 13-year-old Hays girl who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma.

 Styles Dance Center is putting on a benefit concert at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center with all proceeds to go to Camdyn and her family. Admission will be a freewill donation. 

Doors will open at 5 p.m. The event will include special guests from DSNWK.

There will also be a raffle/auction, again with all proceeds going to Camdyn's family.&nbsp;

BUNKER HILL — "Doctors on Call," a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature Dr. Brandon Weidenhaft with Big Creek Vet Service in Hays.&nbsp; This episode will air at 7 p.m. Tuesday&nbsp;and will focus on pet health.

"Doctors on Call" is a program that provides medical information on a variety of different topics. Medical professionals from throughout the state travel to Bunker Hill to provide information and answer questions from the viewing audience. The doctors selected each week have expertise in the topic chosen for that program. Questions can be called in during the show or emailed prior to the broadcast.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tuesday's 'Doctors on Call' features Big Creek Vet Service

OLATHE - MidAmerica Nazarene University (MNU) recently announced its President's, Dean's List and Honor Rolls for the fall 2021 semester. A total of 351 students qualified for one of the honors.&nbsp;

All students in traditional programs carrying 12 semester hours or more with a term GPA from 3.2 to 4.0 may qualify for one of these academic honors. Neutral credit hours are excluded from the calculation and reduce the course load used to figure the honor. 

The President's List is a 4.0 grade point average for the semester; Dean's List ranges from 3.5 to 3.99; and the Honor Roll is 3.2 to 3.49.&nbsp;

MidAmerica Nazarene University is a private, Christian, liberal arts university of approximately 2,000 students in Olathe.

It is time for the annual KSU Watersheds and city of Hays water poster contest. The 2022 theme is “Make Every Drop Count.”

 Daycares, pre-schools, USD 489, Holy Family Elementary, TMP Marian and home-schooled students grades pre-school through 12th, students at Fort Hays State University and NCK Tech, and adults in the city of Hays are eligible to participate.&nbsp;

The “Make Every Drop Count” posters can focus on water conservation or stormwater/water quality messages. Posters could show how to reduce water usage indoors, outdoors, and/or at home and work. Also, posters might share how to reduce sediment, nutrients, and E.coli bacteria, household chemicals, etc. that are harmful to water sources. Both water conservation and stormwater/water quality can be highlighted on the same poster.&nbsp;

Posters must be horizontal, designed on 12 x 18-inch white poster paper with the title “Make Every Drop Count” included. Posters can be designed with pencil, paints, pens, crayons, or markers. In addition, the posters can be three-dimensional or computer-generated. Name, age, and teacher need to be included on the back of the poster.&nbsp;

Poster paper is available for pick up at the Public Works Department, 1002 Vine Street, during regular business hours.&nbsp;

Prize money will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each age division.

Winning posters will be displayed at Tri Central Office Supply during the month of May and at the Ellis County Fair.&nbsp;

Posters are due by Friday, March 11, 2022, at school offices, city hall (1507 Main), or the Public Works Department.

'Human Nature' exhibit set to open at FHSU's Moss-Thorns

The&nbsp;Ellis County&nbsp;Treasurer’s Office, 718 Main, began implementing a new queueing system&nbsp;Monday designed to efficiently serve residents with their transactions.&nbsp;

Customers can use the queueing system during normal office hours,&nbsp;from&nbsp;8 a.m. to 4 p.m., to reserve a virtual place in line. This includes motor vehicle,&nbsp;commercial vehicle&nbsp;and real estate/personal property tax transactions.

Residents&nbsp;can&nbsp;continue sending in their transactions via mail, online or drop box whenever possible. All transactions sent to the Treasurer’s Office should include the person’s contact information (including a phone number and email) for any follow-up questions.&nbsp;

The payment drop box is located on the south side of the administration building and is on the left-hand side as residents are&nbsp;driving down the alley.

Generally held the second Tuesday evening of every other month, our theme this year is titled "Dwight Eisenhower: The Making of a Leader." Our book selection focuses on the categories of family, military, presidency, and mentorship. The book discussions will each focus on how they relate to Dwight Eisenhower's leadership. The first book in February is "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" by Patrick Lencioni with the discussion led by Dr. Gene Chaves with Humanities Kansas.

The March selection is perfect for the entire family to read and join in the discussion. 

This year-long leadership series culminates in October with Susan Eisenhower discussing her recent book "How Ike Led."

Recently, Imagine Ellis County hosted representatives of various organizations from Ellis County to identify, from their perspective, community needs that needed to be met for long-term growth and success of our county and region. Now it is your turn. We need your help to help identify community needs from the perspective of the residents of Ellis County.

On Feb. 7, we will host a Town Hall and facilitate small and large group discussions to learn more from our community members. It is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hays. Dinner is provided for those who attend. &nbsp;

Attendees are encouraged to be fully vaccinated or have a negative COVID test within 48 hours of attendance. Masks are not required but feel free to wear one. There will be plenty of space for a safe event.

Ellis County conservation meeting set for Jan. 27

R.P. Smith, Humorist and Cowboy Poet, is a fourth generation rancher from Broken Bow, Neb.&nbsp; In the ranching game it never hurts to have a little side-gig and for over 30 years humor and cowboy poetry have been a creative outlet for Smith.&nbsp; He produces and records his weekly radio show from the Pine Crest Ranch, his home place.

The Western Plains Arts Association resumes their second half of the group’s 52nd season by showcasing R.P. Smith at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Rawlins County High School Auditorium in Atwood. Admission is by WPAA season ticket or adults $10 and students $5 at the door. The Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, Kansas, has provided WPAA special grants this season.

Smith greatly appreciates the opportunities to entertain that have allowed him to participate in events in 18 U.S. states and several in Canada.&nbsp; The last couple of years have been pretty slow for entertaining, which has given him a chance to start a few more projects around the ranch, yet he is not sure things will ever get slow enough for him to finish any of them.&nbsp;

His weekly radio program “Homegrown” airs on several stations across Nebraska and Texas, and is also available on the web at rpsmith.us. Smith is credited to date with more than 900 three-to-six minute episodes of his radio program, most of which may be heard on his website. He has produced several books, CDs and DVD’s featuring his best works. “Home grown humor, music and poetry that’ll make you smile, laugh &amp; cry.”

During his stage performances he shares his brand of cowboy poetry and country commentary, something that he considers a by-product of the beef industry, which has been processed by reciting for ruminates, relatives, and ranchers.&nbsp; 
 
Smith has worked with some of the top names in western entertainment and has been as a featured entertainer at some of the largest cowboy poetry gatherings in the country. He is amazed by the talented folks who are out there and that is why he is so excited about Home Grown. He is always looking forward to “being blessed and sharing the Lord’s blessings with friends old and new as our trails cross in the near future.&nbsp; Home Grown gives me a chance to run by some of my newest efforts and an opportunity to share the poetic and musical talents of some of the folks I have worked with. It is great stuff, and not something you will hear anywhere else.”

K-State Research and Extension will host the 19th annual Cover Your Acres Winter Conference for crop producers and consultants on January 18 and 19. The conference will take place in the traditional in-person format in Oberlin, Kansas.

Cover Your Acres is a producer-driven meeting focused on new ideas and research-based updates in crop production in northwest Kansas and the Central High Plains region.

The conference, which typically draws more than 400 attendees from Kansas and other states, highlights the latest technology, methods, and conservation practices to improve crop production in the region. This year it will feature university specialists and industry representative discussing the following topics:

The same programs will be offered both days of the conference (program schedule posted below). Registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. with educational sessions ending at 5:00 p.m. The sessions are followed by a social on Tuesday evening where attendees can visit with industry representatives and conference speakers while enjoying heavy hor d’oeurves.

Online registration is due by January 11. The fee is $60 for Tuesday, January 18th, $55 for Wednesday, January 19th, or $80 for both days. The registration fee for walk-ins on each day of the conference is $80. The conference fee includes lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments, and educational materials. Board of Directors has announced the Annual Meeting of Members will be held on
Monday, January 31st, at 7pm in the Stone Church located at the corner of 7th
and Main downtown Hays. The voting ballot will include the annual slate of
officers and four trustee positions. Trustees serve a three-year term and
cannot serve more than two consecutive terms. The four officers serve a
one-year term and are eligible for three consecutive terms as an officer. All
board members must be a resident of Ellis County and current members of ECHS.&nbsp; 
 
Board meetings are held the last Monday of the month. If you are interested in
becoming a board member, please reach out to one of the 17 current members or
email&nbsp;<a href="mailto:director@echshays.org">director@echshays.org</a>&nbsp;to inquire about more details. A nomination committee is gathering
names for the ballot this month, but write-ins are welcome the night of the
meeting as well. The society’s beautiful collection of historic quilts will be
on display in the Stone Church and the evening’s program entitled “A Dust Bowl
Every Now and Then” will be presented by Adam Conkey following meeting
business. 
 
ECHS will also host a member social on the main campus at 100 W 7th Hays on Thursday
January 13th from 6:30-7:30 pm. This is a “Come and Go” event. Staff and
current members will share and answer questions. Supper will be provided. Come

Area students named to honor roll at Bethany College

The Hays USD 489 school board will discuss the results of a community survey on possible bond options at its meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Rockwell Administration Center.

District officials have not finalized what they will take to voters, but have floated three options. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/63930500-9846-41ad-8bc8-85aee2b6e95f">Each option includes building a new school — either a high school, middle school or elementary school.</a>

The most expensive option would be to build a new high school. Cost estimate is $143.5 million over a 25-year bond. The cost per month on a $150,000 home would be $33.42. 

Officials have also discussed breaking the projects into two bonds, which would decrease the per-month cost. However, this option would likely cost more over time and require a second bond vote.

The board will also hear information about recommended adjustments to district COVID mitigation levels. 

The board also plans to tour Westside school.

By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostThe Hays USD 489 school board will discuss the results of a community survey on possible bond options at its meeting at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Rockwell Administration Center.District officials have not finalized what they will take to voters, but have floated three options. <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/63930500-9846-41ad-8bc8-85aee2b6e95f">Each option includes building a new school — either a high school, middle school or elementary school.</a>The most expensive option would be to build a new high school. Cost estimate is $143.5 million over a 25-year bond. The cost per month on a $150,000 home would be $33.42. Officials have also discussed breaking the projects into two bonds, which would decrease the per-month cost. However, this option would likely cost more over time and require a second bond vote.<h2>COVID</h2>The board will also hear information about recommended adjustments to district COVID mitigation levels. The board also plans to tour Westside school.

34th Ag Appreciation banquet set for Jan. 13 in Hays

Due to the exceedingly rising cases in COVID-19 and the COVID-19 omicron variant, the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation has made the difficult decision in rescheduling the Kansas Mission of Mercy event in Hays.

The new dates for the KMOM Event will be Friday, March 25, and Saturday, March 26. The event was originally scheduled for mid-February.

The 21st Kansas Mission of Mercy dental clinic will still be held at the Ellis County Fairgrounds, in Hays on March 25 and 26 where approximately 1,000 patients will receive free dental cleaning, fillings and/or extractions, at no cost to them. During the previous 20 KMOM projects, volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and others provided 31,135 patients with over $20 million in free dental care.&nbsp;

A new volunteer registration link will be created for this new date.

Members of the media are invited to be present on set up day, March 24, or at any time during the clinic on March 25-26. Doors of the clinic will open to patients at 5:30 a.m. on both days. Dentists and other partners who are spearheading this unique, privately funded, volunteer effort will be on hand.&nbsp;

COVID uptick forces free dental clinic to reschedule

TREGO COUNTY — Black bass, crappie, white bass and wipers are just a few of the prized sportfish anglers can catch at Cedar Bluff Reservoir in Trego County, but one particular species has had Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Fisheries biologists’ special attention the past several years – walleye.

In an effort to gather data that can be used to guide future walleye management practices at Cedar Bluff Reservoir, District Fisheries Biologist Dave Spalsbury has implemented the following harvest exception:

The exception, which went into effect on January 1, 2022, has been posted on area signage, to include information kiosks, boat ramps, and other access points around the reservoir.
