Plainville blood drive set for Monday

The Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Logan, is interested in learning more about housing concerns in northwest Kansas. The Hansen Foundation serves the 26 most northwest counties in the state, and annually awards approximately $23 million in grants and scholarships.

The Foundation is working with the North Central Regional Planning Commission, Beloit, to collect information about the housing needs in specific counties, and the region as a whole.&nbsp;

On the back cover of the most recent issue of the Foundation’s regional magazine,&nbsp;Northwest Kansas Today, area residents can share their thoughts by taking a short housing survey. Access to the survey is by QR code on the back of the magazine, or online at:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DaneGHansenHousingSurvey">https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DaneGHansenHousingSurvey</a>.

Northwest Kansas housing survey now open

TOPEKA - The Kansas Departments of Transportation (KDOT) and Agriculture
(KDA) will host workshops for ag producers to learn about an innovative new
pilot program, Heartland Opportunities, Markets and Environment (HOME) that
will provide high-speed internet access to farms located along Preservation +
routes on U.S. 83 and U.S. 81 highways. 

Fiber optic cable is needed to carry
information to message boards across the state and allow for technological
advancements to improve safety along Kansas highways. 

Through KDOT’s new
Preservation+ program, private internet service providers (ISPS) can install
fiber optic cable concurrently with KDOT. By partnering on the installation of
fiber, ISPs can save costs and increase high-speed internet access for Kansans.


The planned Preservation+ routes include U.S. 81 from I-70 north through
Belleville and on U.S. 83 from I-70 north to Oberlin. 

The HOME pilot takes this
partnering effort a step farther by connecting farms located near the planned
Preservation + routes. 

In exchange for receiving high-speed internet access, ag
producers would implement soil health principles on at least one field. These
principles can increase profitability, save water and reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. 

Additionally, by ensuring a reliable high-speed connection, ag
producers will be able to fully participate in potential carbon credit markets.
Producers will have the opportunity to learn more about these soil health
principles and provide input about how infrastructure investments could better
serve the ag industry at these workshops. 

The dates and locations for the
workshops include:

• Hoxie – 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, at the Community
Center (820 Main St.) • Concordia – 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Cloud
County Fairgrounds Commercial Building (615 Industrial Rd.)

These workshops are
free and open to the public.

TOPEKA - Residents and businesses of Kansas counties with property damage resulting from flooding May 15-16, 2021, have until Friday, Aug. 27, to apply for disaster assistance through the Small Business Administration (SBA). The deadline to apply for economic injury is March 28, 2022.

Gov. Laura Kelly requested SBA loan assistance June 25 for residents and businesses in Ellis, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Osborne, Rooks, Russell and Smith counties.

SBA can also lend additional funds to businesses and homeowners to help with the cost of improvements to protect, prevent or minimize the same type of disaster damage from occurring in the future.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size, SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic injury assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage.&nbsp;The deadline for EIDL applications is April 22, 2022.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property.

Interest rates can be as low as 2.88 percent for businesses, 2 percent for private nonprofit organizations and 1.625 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amounts and terms are set by SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition.

Alton Jubilee celebrates 150 years this weekend

GREAT BEND - The Shafer Gallery’s popular quilt exhibit has been extended through October 16 at Barton Community College (BCC), Great Bend. 

Titled “Material Pulses: Seven Viewpoints,” the exhibition is focused on the art of quilt-making and includes 17 works by seven fiber artists representing the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. 

The exhibit is a program of Exhibits USA, a division of Mid-America Arts Alliance with the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission and The National Endowment for the Arts.

The Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.

Stars & Stripes Breakfast Sept. 12 supports AHSGR Sunflower Chapter

As community partners, Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK) / ACCESS Transportation, along with the Partnership for a Safer Community are collaborating in the transition away from the Safe Ride service operated by DSNWK/ACCESS Transportation since 2005.&nbsp; Safe Ride has been a free service available and benefiting the entire community, providing more than 240,000 rides since the service began 16 years ago.

The COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented limitations, including the operation of Safe Ride.&nbsp; Safe Ride has not been operational during the last seventeen months due to the Federal Transit Administration's requirements that all passengers on public transportation must wear a face mask.&nbsp; 

“Under the circumstances, the Safe Ride bus concept simply does not work under the pandemic. The necessary temporary closure must transition to an alternative that can work in these challenging times,"&nbsp; said Jerry Michaud, President of DSNWK. The Partnership for a Safer Community and all involved in the Safe Ride service realize a transition is needed so a choice can be offered that helps keep the roads safe.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

DSNWK: Safe Ride in state of transition

The Courtney-Spalding Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host an exhibition of Santa Fe Trail paintings by Cally Krallman from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday in the Hays Arts Council Annex in conjunction with the Hays Arts Council’s Fall Art Walk. The exhibit also will be open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Santa Fe Trail, which begins in Independence, Mo., and ends in Santa Fe, N.M., is commemorating its 200th anniversary this year. In 1910 the NSDAR marked the 800-mile Trail with 23 monuments. Nineteen monuments remain.

A native of Goodland, Krallman lives in Topeka, and began work on the Santa Fe series in 2015 seeking out “inspirational scenes and documenting them with photographs or studies,” she wrote in an email.&nbsp;

Pieces in the current exhibit are owned by private collectors.

Krallman will be awarded the Kansas DAR Women in the Arts Recognition, recognizing and honoring a woman who has exhibited excellence in her chosen genre, at the KSDAR State Meeting in September.

DAR: Santa Fe Trail paintings will be on exhibit in Hays

Members of the Hays Volga German Society, organizers of Oktoberfest Hays, have announced the 49th annual Volga German Oktoberfest will take place Friday, Oct. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Municipal Park.&nbsp;

Oktoberfest Hays also announced the traditional raising of steins and wearing of lederhosen will be part of the 2021 event. The free admission event will feature two days filled with German traditions, from food and drinks, to music, contests, dancing, a cornhole tournament, kids activities and more.&nbsp;

Registration is still open for vendors to become an integral part of a longstanding Hays tradition. Oktoberfest Hays consistently attracts thousands of visitors and residents who attend every year. In addition, the event provides the opportunity to expose businesses to a diverse demographic, due in part to the multitude of activities offered for every age and family size.&nbsp;

Our guest speaker this month is Dr. Carol Robertson-Lopez with Sister Cities International.

 The presentation will focus on the history of Sister Cities International and its impact within the people-to-people programs around the world. Robertson-Lopez will discuss citizen diplomacy and how it affects local politics, international relations and more.

Dr. Robertson-Lopez is the vice chair/chair-elect of the Sister Cities International board of directors. She began her involvement with Sister Cities while serving two terms on the Santa Fe, New Mexico city council and six years as the mayor pro tempore. She earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. at New Mexico State University.&nbsp;

Currently, Robertson-Lopez is the executive director of the New Mexico Children’s Foundation.&nbsp;

First Call for Help of Ellis County will have an open house and ribbon cutting on Tuesday to celebrate the official completion of its First Step Housing Project, 607 E. 13th.

The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the ribbon cutting ceremony at 4 p.m., said Linda Mills, First Call’s executive director. Parking is available on Montgomery Street.

The $250,000 project will provide transitional housing for up to eight individuals in need of housing for up to six months at a time. First Call is currently accepting applications for the first residents.

Those individuals must be residents of Ellis County, must pass drug and alcohol screening, must have no felony convictions for violent crimes, and must be “committed to striving for stability in future housing,” Mills said. All will be expected to hold jobs and to complete an online “financial literacy” course provided by the FDIC.

The First-Step Housing Project features four bedrooms, each with a private handicapped-accessible bathroom, and a common kitchen and laundry area.

The project, which took six years from planning to completion, is the first ever of its kind in Ellis County, Mills said. Applications are available by calling (785) 623-2800.

Donors contributing $5,000 and more include the Schmidt Foundation, Dane G. Hansen Foundation, Ellis County Ministerial Alliance, Union Pacific Foundation, Ellis County Cares Fund, United Methodist Foundation, Heartland Community Foundation, Ellis County Bar Association, and two anonymous donors.&nbsp;

Mills emphasized that it was the “countless individual donors who contributed between $5 and $5,000" that helped First Call achieve its $250,000 goal.

TOPEKA ‚— The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Ellis water supply system. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system and affected customers located on Washington Street, between Fourth&nbsp;Street and Seventh&nbsp;Street. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Ellis indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved. &nbsp;

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of the City of Ellis public water supply system.

This advisory affects customers located on Washington Street, between 4th Street and 7th Street.

KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system due to a main break. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The advisory took effect on August 19 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.

Boil Water Advisory issued for a portion of Ellis by KDHE

Hays Catholic Schools, TMP-Marian and Holy Family Elementary are excited to kick off the 2021-22 school year with the Back 2 School Bash on Friday on the campus of Thomas More Prep-Marian. 

All in the Hays community are invited to attend this fun family event.

Following the opening prayer and blessing at 4:45 p.m., enjoy a hot dog provided and grilled by Astra Bank of Hays and a cold beverage donated by the Kiwanis Club of Hays and served to you by the TMP-M Key Club. 

This will be a cool treat, thanks to ice donated by Buff's Car Wash. The Knights of Columbus, Council #6984 will also be serving complimentary watermelon. Auto World of Hays will provide water throughout the event.&nbsp;

Ice cream, Sno-Cones, Monarch Football Madness tickets and Hays Catholic Schools yard signs will all be available for purchase.&nbsp;

With the generosity of the following sponsors, Diamond R Jewelry, DW Home Improvement, Gone Logo, Holy Family Home &amp; School Committee, TMP-M PTF, Nex-Tech, Jeff Pinkney CPA, Inc., and Nex-Tech Wireless, and numerous other supporters there will be numerous fun activities for all ages, including bounce houses and obstacle courses, laser tag, dunk tank, roller coaster simulator, DJ with music and karaoke, a four-square volleyball tournament, golf nets and games provided by Precision Valley, cotton candy served by the TMP Drama Club, and popcorn served by the Hays Catholic Schools Advancement Office.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At 5 p.m., Herrman Physical Therapy and Wellness will be holding a Mini Monarch Combine where future monarchs can test their athletic skills. 

Southwind Crossfit will be hosting a fun run for all ages beginning at 6 p.m. In addition, there will be several sports scrimmages throughout the evening ending with the Blue and White Football Scrimmage on Cripplegate Field at 7 p.m.&nbsp;

The TMP-M Cheerleaders will be painting faces as well as performing at 6:45 p.m. Also included is the TMP-M Chess Club, which will show off their skills, and the Garden Club featuring amazing homegrown produce.&nbsp;

At the conclusion of the activities at 9 p.m., a street dance will continue and prizes donated by the TMP-M High School StuCo will be drawn. You must be present to win.&nbsp;

At 10 p.m., the evening will end with a literal “bang” as a firework show will be presented by The Golden Q Bar &amp; Grill and Brick's Rockin’ BBQ. &nbsp;

Non-perishable food items to benefit the St. Joseph’s Food Pantry, will be collected at the welcome table upon entering. 

Parking on campus will be limited to the east and south of Al Billinger Fieldhouse. 

Registration for all events and prizes will be available at the welcome table.
