Kiwanis offers free meal for vets and active military on Nov. 4

Beginning Tuesday, 12th Street in Hays will be closed to through traffic just west of Pine Street for storm sewer work.

  Pine Street will remain open to north/south traffic, but 12th Street will be closed to east/west traffic. 

 12th Street is expected to reopen by the end of the day Friday.

Author Roxie Yonkey enjoys Gella’s Diner/Lb. Brewing Co. so much that she included the Hays brewery in her new book 100 "Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die."

 It’s No. 20. For the brewery’s Oct. 21 New Beer’s Eve, they are bringing their No. 20 beer out of retirement. Yonkey will be autographing books from 4 to 9 p.m. at the brewery, 117 E. 11th St., Hays.

The book debuted Oct. 1 on Amazon. Eight days later, the book rocketed to the top of the Central United States Travel Guides category. It’s the category’s No. 1 new release. “Kansas has numerous wonderful breweries,” Yonkey said, “but Lb. Brewing was my only candidate for the epitome of Kansas brewing.” 

“When Gella’s and Lb. Brewing opened, my husband and I knew nothing about craft beer,” Yonkey recalled. “I didn’t even like beer.” The craft brew revelation was about to change the future author’s mind. “The diner’s wait staff was so patient with us newbies, taking time to teach us about beer. We’ve been sold on the Gella’s experience ever since.”

Gella’s is in the food and drink category. The book’s remaining sections are music and entertainment, sports and recreation, culture and history. Including the 100 Things, the book includes more than 400 places to visit in more than 70 of Kansas’s counties.

Yonkey has been writing about Kansas for over 30 years. "100 Things to Do in Kansas Before You Die" is her second book. In 2020, she co-authored the book Midwest Road Trip Adventures. That book includes road trip guides for all 12 Midwest states. Yonkey wrote the Kansas chapter and the Black Hills section of the South Dakota chapter. There will be a book signing and reading for "Warclouds on the High Plains" at 2 p.m. Oct. 24 at historic Fort Hays. Past Historic Fort Hays director and local author Bob Wilhelm will present his new fiction book "Warclouds on the High Plains."

The book is about Fort Hays, soldiers stationed there and daily life of an 1867-1888 soldier. He will talk about his writing and research process and he will sign copies of the book.&nbsp;

There will be books for sale at the program.&nbsp; Refreshments will be provided.

Hays Young Professionals to host leadership summit

Hays' annual coat drive runs through Oct. 25

The 2021 Hays annual fall cleanup will consist of one and only one sweep through the city beginning Oct. 18.

No set schedule has been established; however, residential curbside services will be first with residential regular alley services following.

If you put your trash on the curb, put your fall cleanup items on the curb. If you put your trash in the alley, put your fall cleanup items in the alley. The city-wide general schedule for alley services will start after curbside collections are completed.&nbsp;

The number of employees committed to the task may vary from day to day; therefore, crews are unable to predict when they will be by a residence. 

City crews have a 20-minute time limit per residence; however, a limit of 10 minutes will be placed on tree limbs and brush. Any items remaining after the time limit will be the responsibility of the property owner.

As in years past, the city will not pick up tires and hazardous waste. Tires should be disposed of at the Ellis County Landfill, and hazardous waste items should be disposed of at the Ellis County Hazardous Waste Facility. Please call 785-628-9460 or 785-628-9449 for detailed information.&nbsp;

The annual fall cleanup program, set to begin Oct. 18, is an opportunity for residents to discard items that would not be picked up in normal trash collection.&nbsp;

Waste should be placed in four separate piles. The piles should be organized in the following manner:&nbsp;

Tree limbs and brush - Small Quantities Only!&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Crews will spend a maximum of 10-minutes per residence for this item. Limbs shall be no longer than 12 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter; Bamboo bundled in maximum 4 feet lengths; All yard and garden waste MUST be bagged. (Free disposal of tree limbs is available for city of Hays
residents at the Ellis County Sanitary Landfill, 1515 W. 55th, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

2. Construction and demolition debris, i.e., lumber, drywall, bricks, sinks, wires, etc. Please pull or bend over nails and place small quantities of concrete, bricks, and plaster in containers.

3. White goods/metals, i.e., guttering, siding, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, metal swing sets, propane tanks for grills, etc.&nbsp;

4. Municipal waste (all other items), i.e., furniture, carpet, TVs, computers, etc.

The survey is the first step in a Midwest Road Usage Charge (RUC) Study being led by KDOT. 

Kansas is the first DOT to engage drivers to help design a local RUC pilot. The study will focus on identifying how a RUC system that reflects unique Midwestern values and needs could fund transportation investments.

Kansas roads and bridges are funded primarily by motor fuel tax revenues, the taxes paid at the pump. This funding continues to decline with the increased number of electric and hybrid vehicles and as people drive fewer miles. A recent KDOT study indicates by 2045, the state’s transportation system could rely on sales taxes for 60% of revenue, which is not likely to be sustainable.

This is a nationwide issue, but to date, the discussion on how a RUC could work has been primarily led by research on the east and west coasts. KDOT’s RUC Study is the first major pilot to bring a local, Midwest perspective to this important discussion.

“It’s important we bring a Midwest perspective to this national conversation,” said Secretary of Transportation Julie Lorenz. “Completing this local study will help KDOT better understand the potential real-world implications of a road usage charge model and help to ensure agricultural and freight industry perspectives – as well as rural drivers – are considered.”

The study will be conducted in three phases. 

Phase One is seeking volunteers to engage in activities and provide feedback that will inform the RUC pilot design. MANHATTAN — The Kansas Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the 2021 Specialty Crop Block Grant H.R. 133 Stimulus Program. This program is in addition to the traditional Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Awards for that program will be announced later this fall.&nbsp;

Funds for both grant programs are awarded to the agency by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service. 

The funds are in turn granted to projects and organizations to enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops by leveraging efforts to market and promote specialty crops; assisting producers with research and development relevant to specialty crops; expanding availability and access to specialty crops; and addressing local, regional, and national challenges confronting specialty crop producers. 

Specialty crops are defined by the USDA as “fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture.”

Due to COVID-19 impacts on the food system, Congress authorized one-time additional funding for the Specialty Crop Block Grant H.R. 133 Stimulus Program outside of the traditional Farm Bill funding under the 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act. Kansas is expected to receive approximately $450,000 in H.R. 133 Stimulus funding for the 2021 grant cycle.

Applications will be evaluated by a team of external reviewers. The team will rate proposals on their ability to successfully promote specialty crops in Kansas and make a positive impact on the Kansas economy. Those recommendations will be submitted to the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture, who will make the final awards.

PRATT – For the first time ever, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is offering a fully-online Hunter Education course for prospective hunters aged 16 and older. Upon successful completion of the self-paced course, students will be issued a Kansas Hunter Education Certificate, allowing them to purchase hunting licenses and permits, and be eligible to hunt without the direct supervision of a licensed adult in Kansas.

Historically, KDWP has offered two delivery methods for Hunter Education certification: a traditional, 10-hour minimum in-person course, and an internet-assisted option that requires an in-person “field day.” The newly-added, fully-online course – developed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) – is currently offered in 12 states and covers 14 subjects across four modules – Firearm Basics, Firearm Handling, Field Safety and Hunter Ethics.

“While researching online course options for our Kansas resident hunters, our team was very critical of online delivery options. We wanted a course that was comprehensive, interactive, inclusive and free,” said Aaron Austin, KDWP education section chief. 

“The NRA Online Hunter Education course exceeded our expectations. The engaging online activities have the students applying what they learn in the course to real-life situations, giving them practical knowledge they can use while hunting.”

Kansas’ full-online option will not replace traditional courses or internet-assisted courses; it is being offered in conjunction with previous course formats.

Fort Street asphalt overlay project begins Wednesday

Steve Leslie has had a professional songwriting career spanning more than 25 years with songs recorded by Kenny Rogers, Mark Chesnutt, George Strait, Darryl Worley, Rhonda Vincent, Neal McCoy, Ricky Skaggs, Darius Rucker, and more. A multiple BMI Award-winner,&nbsp;Leslie received a Grammy for the title cut to Ricky Skaggs' 2004 Best Bluegrass Album of the Year "Brand New Strings.”

Leslie has been playing guitar and singing onstage since he was 15 years old. As a recording artist Steve has released three CDs, as well as written the music and book for the&nbsp;full-length musical, Umbrella.

James Taylor tribute singer set to perform in Colby

The Hays Symphony will be presenting&nbsp;Creepy Classics: A Children’s Halloween Concert, featuring loud noises, creepy sounds and the scary stories music can tell, on Sunday October 31, 2021, 2:30 p.m. in the FHSU Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Brian Buckstead, Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at FHSU.

The program features&nbsp;Danse Macabre&nbsp;by Camille Saint-Saens,&nbsp;Night on Bald Mountain, by Modest Mussorgsky,&nbsp;In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, by Edward Grieg,&nbsp;Suite from Psycho, by Bernard Herrmann,&nbsp;March to the Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique, by Hector Berlioz, andHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Suite, by John Williams.

In addition, a host of music and Halloween themed pre-concert activities will be offered starting at 1:30pm. “We think it’s important for kids to get their hands on instruments and to make connections between the music they’re hearing and how it’s created,” said Buckstead.

Symphony musicians and members of the FHSU Chapter of the National Association for Music Education will assist with pre-concert activities which include:

· &nbsp;Spooky Music Tour—costumed statues come to life playing clips of the scariest sounds and music kids will hear in the concert;

· &nbsp;Drumming Circle—bongos, tam-tams, and other rhythm devices for making lots of loud noise;

· &nbsp;String Instrument Petting Zoo—hands-on guided experimenting with violins, violas and cellos;

· &nbsp;In the Hall of the Mountain King—tiptoe past the troll….run for your life in this retelling of the Mountain King story full of music, story and action;

· &nbsp;Meet the Family: Winds &amp; Brass—flutes, trumpets, tubas, clarinets and more. FHSU students demonstrate their instruments from the wind and brass families;

· &nbsp;Creepy Arts and Crafts—create a variety of Halloween characters and props with a treasure box of arts supplies;

· &nbsp;Halloween Costume Parade—follow the brass leaders as costumed children parade around Beach-Schmidt and into the auditorium for the start of the concert.

· &nbsp;Free Trick-or-Treat Bags to the first 250 kids

The concert and treats are sponsored by a generous donation from Werth Wealth Management.

All Hays Symphony concerts are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance on the symphony’s web site.
