On Feb. 20 at 2 p.m., Fort
Hays welcomes Ken Spurgeon as its featured speaker and presenter. 

Ken is a
historian, teacher and producer/director associated with Fall River
Productions. The film company focuses on historically-themed projects, and they
are currently working on the highly awaited The Contested Plains.

This docu-drama is based on historic
events in the 19th Century American West and is filming in Kansas and Texas.


Filming has already taken place in Wichita and Logan counties. The
project is produced by The White Deer Land Museum Foundation, Pampa, Texas and
Fall River Productions, Wichita. 

The anticipated release date is summer 2022.

The Contested Plains recounts the
story of John and Liddia German, who left Georgia with their seven children in
1870, headed for a better home in the West. 

The family collided with a Cheyenne
raiding party, who were survivors of the Sand Creek Massacre and the attack at
the Washita. 

This unspeakable tragedy occurred twenty miles east of Fort
Wallace in August of 1874 as the family followed the Smoky Hill Trail
westward to Colorado. 

An intensive search for the four surviving German girls
grabbed headlines throughout the nation and made household names of Native
leaders and military officers.

BUNKER HILL — "The Kansas Legislature," a local production of Smoky Hills PBS, will feature state Sen. John Doll, R-Garden City, and state Sen. Elaine Bowers, R-Concordia, at 7 p.m. Friday.

"The Kansas Legislature" is a program that takes place during the legislative session and gives the legislators and viewers the opportunity to discuss up-to-date issues.  During the program, viewers can call 1-800-337-4788 with their legislative questions. "The Kansas Legislature" is hosted by Becky Kiser, news reporter for Hays Post and Eagle Radio.

The Hays Youth Symphony under the direction of USD489 music teacher Nathan Mark will be presenting a dinner show concert on Friday, February 18th, 6 p.m., at the Rose Garden Banquet Hall, 2350 E. 8th, Hays.

The group is composed of students from 6th – 12th grade from around the Hays area and meet after school as an extracurricular activity.The program includes: Themes from Jurassic Park, Clocks by Coldplay; Swashbuckler’s Saga; Conquistador ; Symphony No 4 by Elliot del Borgo; Farandole by Georges Bizet; and Velocity by Brian Balmagess.

Tickets are $10 for adults ($5 for middle school and younger), and includes the concert plus a dinner of Garden Salad, Chicken (honey pecan sauce &amp; white gravy on the side), Loaded Potatoes, Green Beans and Dinner Rolls. (Vegetarian option also available).

The Kansas Department of Transportation has started a field survey for a proposed project to replace the Middle Beaver Creek drainage bridge, located along K-8 in Smith County.

The bridge is located approximately 12 miles north of the U.S. 36 junction. Survey activities include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor. KDOT expects work to be complete by the end of March.

Crews will contact property owners or tenants for permission to enter private property if access is needed.&nbsp;<a>Kara LaRiviere, project survey manager, will oversee the survey for KDOT.</a>

CASA of the High Plains is hosting its second annual Luck Bids for CASA Kids online auction fundraiser from March 17 to  11:59 p.m. March 28.

Help CASA celebrate more than 30 years serving as a voice for children. In 2021, there were about 100 children who needed CASA’s (Court Appointed Special Advocates) in the 23rd Judicial District. The district covers Ellis, Rooks, Trego and Gove counties.

The CASA volunteers are assigned to the court cases for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. CASAs serve as the voice for these vulnerable children in court.

All proceeds benefit CASA of the High Plains Inc. to help children removed from their homes.

Area students named to Barton Community College President’s List

The Hays Baseball Club organization is accepting player signups and has scheduled evaluations for players ages 15 to 19.

Evaluations will be Feb. 26 at Premier Indoor Training (PIT). Current freshman and sophomores are expected to try out at 1 p.m., and current juniors and seniors are expected to try out at 3 p.m.

Multi-musician entertainer Gary Todd is known as The New Odyssey Guy.&nbsp;Sponsored by Western Plains Arts Association, Todd will be taking the stage of the&nbsp;Wallace County High School Auditorium, 521 North Main Street, Sharon Springs,&nbsp;on&nbsp;Sunday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. MST (3 p.m. CST).

Admission is by WPAA season ticket, or adults $10, students $5 at the door. In addition to business sponsors and other generous&nbsp;foundations, this program&nbsp;receives&nbsp;major&nbsp;grant funding from the Dane G. Hansen&nbsp;Foundation, Logan, Kan.

Prior to launching a solo career featuring&nbsp;Todd&nbsp;playing ten different instruments, he was one of three guys from the greater Chicago area&nbsp;who&nbsp;played a combined number of&nbsp;30 instruments from&nbsp;late 1977 through 2018 known as New Odyssey.

Breaking into the entertainment industry at age 2,&nbsp;he&nbsp;began performing as an acrobat in his family act “The Tumbling Todd’s.” By the age of 13 he had already headed out on his own with his first single act, entertaining the crowds with&nbsp;music,&nbsp;comedy and&nbsp;tumbling. A few years later at&nbsp;the age of 17, Gary joined&nbsp;a&nbsp;midwestpub and&nbsp;night club&nbsp;band “Odyssey."

He regularly plays: trumpet, bass trumpet, pocket trumpet,&nbsp;banjo,&nbsp;electric guitar,&nbsp;soprano sax,&nbsp;alto sax, baritone,&nbsp;flugelhorn, and&nbsp;the electronic&nbsp;drums.

“Originally I picked&nbsp;up the drums to join my brother’s band&nbsp;‘Wally and the Whalers’<a></a>,” Todd said. "My drums have evolved from a traditional acoustic set to the current electronic drums in use today. ... The drums have always been a mainstay of my identity as a musician.”

Fort Hays State releases fall 2021 Dean’s Honor Roll

The Hays school board voted Monday to change all of its meetings to 6:30 p.m. Mondays.

The school board had been meeting for work sessions at 11:30 a.m. on the second Mondays of the month at one of the district schools.

Superintendent Ron Wilson said this was meant to give the school board members opportunities to see the schools operating with students in them.

However, board member Curt Vajnar argued residents — and even school board members — struggled to attend the meetings conducted in the middle of the day.

The next school board meeting will be at 6:30 p.m Monday, Feb. 21, at the Rockwell Administration Center. 

The school board usually sets its meeting schedule in July for the year. The board plans to revisit the meeting schedule issue again at that time.

Vajnar further thought the term work session was misleading as the board usually conducts business during the lunch hour work sessions. The district in the future plans to do away with the work session title.

Although the district did not have an audience participation item on its agenda when it was released on Friday, that was added to the agenda Monday.

One person spoke briefly in favor of the bond issue during that participation period.

USD 489 changes meeting times in hopes of increasing participation

First Call for Help is sponsoring its second annual Photo Frenzy fundraiser.

Strike a pose on Saturday, March 5. Select your team of up to four people, hop in the car, and get ready to make memories for a good cause. 

•	Call 785-623-2800 to register your team by March 2. Registration fee is $20 for adults and $15 for kids 12 and younger. This is a family friendly event. 	•	On the morning of March 5, receive your scavenger hunt clues and have a blast setting out to find the locations between 10 a.m. and noon. 	•	Snap photos of your answers and submit them for points. 	•	Team scores will be added together, and prizes will be awarded to the winning team members.

This is a fun, interactive event that brings people together to raise money and awareness for First Call For Help. All registration fees and any additional funds raised go directly to support community members in need of basic essential services, such as rent, utilities and diapers.

"Even one teen death is unacceptable," Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun said. "Please slow down, put the phone away or turn it off, and always buckle up."

Officers will issue citations
to any individual who refuses
to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting
or failing to buckle up. 

Remind teens that driving
is a privilege and encourage
then to learn about the importance of driving safely.

The curtain opens Valentine’s weekend for Hays Community Theatre’s production of Love Letters, a Pulitzer prize-nominated play written by A.R. Gurney. The production focuses on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, and their life-long relationship as told through their written correspondence to one another - for over 50 years. The show has been performed both on and off-Broadway since its debut in 1989. The HCT production is slated for Friday, February 11; Saturday, February 12; and Monday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. Each night of the three-night run at HCT will feature a different local couple as the actors. Range Ave., 9:00 am to noon, CSTOsborne, United Christian Church, 214 North 2nd Street, 3:00 to 6:00 pm.February 16 – Hill City, Graham County 4-H Building Fairgrounds, 9:00 am to noonClaflin, Community Center, 409 A Street, 3:00 to 6:00 pm.&nbsp;	Topics for the meeting will include revisiting residual herbicides in corn; non-chemical approaches to deal with herbicide shortages and prices; research update in application technology along with a question and answer session.&nbsp; Presenters for the program will include K-State Research and Extension weed management specialists, along with Randy Lloyd, technology research scientist with the University of Nebraska will share his research from the application technology lab at North Platte. Three Pest Management CCA credits and 3 commercial applicator CEU’s are available. &nbsp;	Registration is requested for the meal count by Friday online at <a href="http://www.northwest.ksu.edu/events">www.northwest.ksu.edu/events</a> or call your local Extension Office.&nbsp;
