NEW YORK (AP) —Beatles fans will be feeling some “real love” for this: New content from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/the-beatles">the iconic band</a>&nbsp;is coming this fall on screen, in music and in print.

“The Beatles Anthology” will be returning “in its ultimate form,” according to a release issued Thursday.

The famed 1995 “Anthology” music documentary, recounting the band’s journey beginning with its Liverpool roots through to its explosive stardom, has been restored and remastered, and will feature a new, ninth episode. It will stream on Disney+ beginning November 26.

The ninth episode features behind-the-scenes footage of Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr coming together in 1994-1995 to work on the series and “reflecting on their shared life as the Beatles.” Giles Martin, son of the late Beatles producer George Martin who died in 2016, has created new audio mixes for the majority of the featured music.

New “Anthology” music will be released on Nov. 21. A fourth album, to be released alongside remastered versions of the first three, includes 13 previously unreleased demos, session recordings and other rare recordings.

“Anthology 4” also includes, according to the release, new mixes of the Beatles’ “Anthology”-related hit singles: “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love.” The original “Free As A Bird” music video has also been restored.

The two new mixes come alongside&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/last-new-beatles-song-e7b3a349b0e1e58b8668e98ba2d9cd0b">2023’s “Now And Then,” the last Beatles song.</a>&nbsp;(All three singles were created from home demos that John Lennon, who was killed in 1980 outside the Dakota apartment building, recorded not long before, with vocal and instrumental parts later recorded by Paul, George and Ringo.)

A 25th anniversary edition of the Beatles Anthology Book will arrive October 14. In the book, all four Beatles recall the band’s journey. They’re joined by colleagues including Neil Aspinall, George Martin, Derek Taylor and others.

New Beatles ‘Anthology’ projects will be released this fall

MANHATTAN — More than 220 high school students from across the State of Kansas participated in the 2025 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas (ALBSK), held June 1-7 at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This was the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall. 

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. 

Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.&nbsp;

Kansas Boys State has announced the following awards and honors from the week (all cities and high&nbsp;schools in Kansas unless noted):

• Advisor of the Year — James Snyder, Ozawkie, served as a KBS medical advisor and is the&nbsp;chair of the American Legion Department of Kansas Boys State Committee.

• Experienced Counselor of the Year (three or more years on staff) — Jordin Myers, Hays, served&nbsp;as head counselor of information technology. Myers was a 2021 and 2022 KBS delegate, and a&nbsp;2023 graduate of Hays High School.

• New Counselor of the Year (one or two years on staff) — Declan Wilson, Olathe, served as a&nbsp;city counselor. Wilson was a 2024 KBS delegate and a 2025 graduate of Olathe North High&nbsp;School.

&nbsp;Jared Tucker, Fall River, and a senior at West Elk High School in Howard, was named the American Legion Department of Kansas winner of the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. As the State of Kansas winner, Tucker receives a $1,250 scholarship, and his application moves on to the national level where he could receive a $5,000 award as a national runner-up or a $10,000 award as a national scholar. The national awards are expected to be announced in October.&nbsp;

Conner Harris, Arkansas City, and a senior at Arkansas City High School, was named winner of the $1,000 American Legion Boys State of Kansas Executive Director Scholarship. The winner of the scholarship, as selected by the KBS executive director, is presented to a Kansas Boys State delegate who demonstrated exceptional understanding of the KBS principles. The scholarship is designed to recognize individuals who are committed to applying the knowledge and leadership skills gained from Boys State in their schools and communities.&nbsp;

Gabriel Kumar, Lawrence, a senior at Veritas Christian School in Lawrence, received the William “Bill” F. Stahl Outstanding Justice Award, given to the outstanding member of the Boys State of Kansas Supreme Court as voted on by his Supreme Court peers. The award is presented in recognition of outstanding commitment to justice under the law and dedicated service to Boys State of Kansas. Stahl, of Junction City, passed away in September 2015 and was a longtime supporter of the ALBSK.&nbsp;

Winston Mays, Topeka, a senior at Washburn Rural High School, was named the Outstanding Senator, while Tristan Jenkins, Olathe, a senior at Olathe South High School, was named the Outstanding State Representative (Jenkins was also elected to represent Kansas Boys State at Boys Nation this summer).

The 88th session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas is scheduled to be held the week of Sunday, May 31, through Saturday, June 6, 2026, again at Kansas State University. Hays, Otis attendees earn awards at Boys State of Kansas 2025 session

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The family of fallen Sedgwick&nbsp; County Deputy Sidnee Carter and the Deputy Sidnee Carter Memorial honored her legacy by dedicating the newest horse to the Wichita Police Department Mounted Unit on Thursday.

Chief Joe Sullivan, Mounted Unit commanders, and members of the Sheriff’s Office joined in this special dedication ceremony.

"We are deeply grateful to the Carter family and the Deputy Sidnee Carter Memorial for their generosity. Our new police horse, Syd, will serve as a lasting tribute to Deputy Carter’s memory and commitment to public service."

In October of 2022, Deputy Sidnee Carter died when her patrol vehicle was struck&nbsp; near 135th Street at 29th Street north one mile west of Northwest Wichita and Maize as she was responding to a disturbance.

Deputy Carter had only worked in the field alone for a week, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter and had just completed her training.

Deputy Carter had served the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office for one and a half years in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility before transferring to the Law Enforcement Bureau in February 2022. She graduated the Law Enforcement Academy on July 21, 2022.&nbsp;

The preliminary hearing scheduled on Friday for 32-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/3e716804-4732-43e4-a3cf-086e2bdc9859">Kayla Errebo</a>&nbsp;who is charged with 2nd-degree murder in connection with a fatal crash in Saline. County was delayed.

According to Noah Morgan from the Saline County Attorney's office, the preliminary hearing was rescheduled as Errebo's attorney, who needed more time to prepare evidence.

The rescheduled preliminary hearing date is set for&nbsp;Tuesday, October 21st&nbsp;at&nbsp;9:00 am&nbsp;inside the&nbsp;City of Salina-Saline County building (300 W Ash St), Room 301.

According to Saline County Sheriff's Captain Jim Hughes, just before 5:30a.m. August 8, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Errebo of Lorraine was westbound on Kansas 140 at South Reese Road in rural Saline County. The Jeep entered the eastbound lanes and struck a&nbsp;Chevrolet truck driven by&nbsp;61-year-old Mark Sommerfeld of Brookville head-on.

A passenger in the Chevy identified as 55-year-old Deanna Sommerfeld from Brookville was pronounced deceased on scene.

EMS transported&nbsp; Mark Sommerfield to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment.

Errebo was not at the scene of the crash. Deputies located her just before 8:30a.m. at an address in Ellsworth.&nbsp; She had minor&nbsp;injuries that did not require medical treatment. Errebo was taken into custody and booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of Murder in&nbsp; the second degree, Failure to report an injury accident, Circumvention of ignition interlock device and Probation violation. She remains jailed on a $1 million bond.

The preliminary hearing is open to the public.

Hearing delayed for driver accused in fatal Kansas crash

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. (AP) — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Friday opened the door ever so slightly to lowering a key interest rate in the coming months but gave no hint on the timing of a move and suggested the central bank will proceed cautiously as it continues to evaluate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/asia-tariffs-trump-china-trade-78d11d9d8ab4eb66898e12fdbd5aa9b4">the impact of tariffs</a>&nbsp;and other policies on the economy.

In a high-profile speech closely watched at the White House and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-powell-trump-2fcc29096ecaec4fff8fa555e4fda967">on Wall Street</a>, Powell said that there are risks of both rising unemployment and stubbornly higher inflation. Yet he suggested that with hiring sluggish, the job market could weaken further.

“The shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance,” he said, a reference to his concerns about weaker job gains and a more direct sign that the Fed is considering a rate cut than he has made in previous comments.

Still, Powell’s remarks suggest the Fed will proceed carefully in the coming months and will make its rate decisions based on how inflation and unemployment evolve. The Fed has three more meetings this year, including next month, in late October, and in December, and it's not clear whether the Fed will cut at all those meetings.

“The stability of the unemployment rate and other labor market measures allows us to proceed carefully as we consider changes to our policy stance,” Powell said. That suggests the Fed will continue to evaluate jobs and inflation data as it decides whether to cut rates.

The stock market jumped in response to Powell's remarks, with the broad S&amp;P 500 index rising 1.6% in midday trading.

Powell spoke with the Fed under unprecedented&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-federal-reserve-4821bb5d0baa9980c4c69ab26fab3ab4">public scrutiny</a>&nbsp;from the White House, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly insulted Powell and has urged him to cut rates, arguing there is “no inflation” and saying that a cut would lower the government’s interest payments on its $37 trillion in debt.

Trump also says a cut would boost the moribund housing market. A rate cut by the Fed often leads to lower borrowing costs for mortgages, car loans, and business borrowing, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-powell-fed-inflation-tariffs-recession-e698dca7ceddf382c1b030e7bf1bd202">it doesn't always</a>.

While Powell spoke, Trump elevated his attacks, telling reporters in Washington, D.C. that he would fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook if she did not step down over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-federal-reserve-rates-354ddf9b0b2a78eabbe7ebd361bf2e05">allegations from an administration official</a>&nbsp;that she committed mortgage fraud.

If Cook is removed, that would give Trump an opportunity to put a loyalist on the Fed's governing board. The Fed has long been considered independent from day-to-day politics. The president can't fire a Fed governor over disagreements on interest rate policy, but he can do so “for cause,” which is generally seen as malfeasance or neglect of duty.

Powell spoke at the Fed’s annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a conference with about 100 academics, economists, and central bank officials from around the world. He was given a standing ovation before he spoke.

In his remarks, the Fed chair underscored that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-consumer-prices-jerome-powell-fed-interest-rates-7956da9c097730929b12c269f8c08399">tariffs are lifting inflation</a>&nbsp;and could push it higher in the coming months.

“The effects of tariffs on consumer prices are now clearly visible. We expect those effects to accumulate over coming months, with high uncertainty about timing and amounts,” Powell said.

Inflation has crept higher in recent months though it is down from a peak of 9.1% three years ago. Tariffs have not spurred inflation as much as some economists worried, but they are starting to lift the prices of heavily imported goods such as furniture, toys, and shoes.

Consumer prices rose 2.7%&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-consumer-prices-jerome-powell-fed-interest-rates-7956da9c097730929b12c269f8c08399">in July from a year ago</a>, above the Fed’s target of 2%. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices rose 3.1%.

Powell added that higher prices from tariffs could cause a one-time shift to prices, rather than an ongoing bout of inflation. Other Fed officials have said that is the most likely outcome and as a result the central bank can cut rates to boost the job market.

The Fed chair said it is largely up to the central bank to ensure that tariffs don’t lead to sustained inflation.

“Come what may, we will not allow a one-time increase in the price level to become an ongoing inflation problem,” he said, suggesting deep rate cuts, as Trump has demanded, are unlikely.

Regarding the job market, Powell noted that even as hiring has slowed sharply this year, the unemployment rate remains low. He added that with immigration falling sharply, fewer jobs are needed to keep unemployment in check.

Yet with hiring sluggish, the risks of a sharper downturn, with rising layoffs, has risen, Powell said.

Powell also suggested the Fed would continue to set its interest-rate policy free from political pressure.

🎥 Good news for borrowers: Fed hints it will lower interest rates

After 25 impactful years, HaysMed is retiring its traditional drive-thru flu shot clinic and launching a more flexible, integrated approach to community health. Starting this fall, flu shots will be offered during its monthly blood screening events- providing a convenient, one-stop opportunity for preventive care.

 The decision to discontinue the drive-thru format comes in response to changing community needs and increased access to free flu shots at local pharmacies such as Walgreens, Walmart, and Dillon’s. While the HaysMed drive-thru clinic once served nearly 4,000 individuals annually, recent participation has dropped below 1,500. This new format allows the hospital to better align with current trends and improve accessibility for the community.

Participants can now receive a free flu shot, participate in blood screening lab draws, or do both- all in one visit. Flu shots will be available on the following Saturdays from 6:30 a.m. – 10:00a.m. at Entrance B (Miller Pavillion), using parking Lot B on September 6, October 4, or November 1, 2025.

Children’s flu shots will be administered in the same area as adult vaccinations to simplify the experience for families. To help with flow and minimize wait times, participants may choose to go directly to the flu shot station or begin with blood screening.

Since its inception, HaysMed has proudly administered 69,802 flu shots to the community. In 2024 alone, the hospital provided 1,300 adult and 378 pediatric vaccines free of charge, thanks to the support of the HaysMed Foundation.

The HaysMed flu shot events have also supported local families through food donations. In 2024, participants donated 583 pounds of canned food to the Community Assistance Center. Since 2007, the hospital collected a total of 26,854 pounds- nearly 13.5 tons of food! 

All attendees are encourage to bring a non-perishable food item to continue this tradition of giving back.

HaysMed announces new format for 2025 free Community Flu Shot Event

Karen Rose Strachan, 76, of Russell, Kansas, died on Tuesday August 12, 2025, at the University of Kansas Health Systems - Great Bend Campus in Great Bend, Kansas.

Karen was born on October 06, 1948, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Virgil Martin and Adelinde Marie (Leikam) Bollig. She grew up in Hays, Kansas, and graduated from Marian High School. She attended Fort Hays State University, majoring in education. She married James Moore in 1973, they later divorced in 1977. She had two children from that union, Martin and Melissa. Karen worked for many years as a secretary for the Hays Area SRS office and helped her father, Virgil, by working at A.S.B. Oil. After leaving the SRS office, Karen worked at local factories in the Hays area such as Adronics-Elrob and Enersys.

She was united in marriage to John W. “Jay” Strachan IV on January 27, 1990, in Hays, Kansas, and became stepmother to Robert and Lori. She later moved to the Russell area in 1996. She worked as a cook/dietary aide at the Russell Regional Hospital for 17 years and was a longtime member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading books and her dogs. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and attending her grandchildren’s activities.

Surviving family includes her son Martin Strachan of Russell, Kansas, daughter Melissa Wellbrock and husband John of Victoria, Kansas, stepson Robert Strachan of Hays, Kansas and stepdaughter Lori Riedel of Russell, Kansas; brother Wayne Bollig and wife Connie of Hays, Kansas, sister Donna Brohman of Downs, Kansas; and sister-in-law Kristine Bollig of Hays, Kansas. She has 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, and brother Dennis Bollig.

Cremation was selected by the family.  A memorial service to celebrate Karen’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas.  A reception in the church fellowship hall will immediately follow the church memorial service.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Monday, August 25, 2025, at the mortuary with family greeting guests from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Monday evening.  Memorials may be given to the Karen Strachan Memorial Fund and sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary 610 N. Maple St.  Russell, Kansas 67665 who is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

JOHNSON COUNTY — A man admitted his role in a drug overdose death.

On August 14, Joseph Thomas Miller pleaded guilty to distribution of drugs causing death in connection with he death of 33-year-old Mason Findley of Wellsville in August of 2024, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

In February,&nbsp; police found and arrested Miller in Kansas City in connection with the alleged crime, according to Jackson County court records.&nbsp;

In August of 2024, Miller sold a controlled substance to Findley which ultimately caused his death, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Johnson County, Kansas District Attorney's office.

Suspect admits selling drugs that killed Kansas man

Arlen was educated in the Catholic schools of Hays,
including St. Joseph Military Academy for high school. He was a proud member of
the Class of 1953, maintaining connections with his male classmates through the
years and including his female classmates from Girls Catholic High School. He
was instrumental in organizing class gatherings for homecomings through his
70th reunion in 2023. His efforts in promoting the school, now Thomas More
Prep/Marian High School, resulted in his receiving the Points of Light award
from the school.

Arlen graduated from Fort Hays State College (now
University) with a business degree. He served two years in the United States
Army at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He played baseball, center field, for the Hays
Larks for many years and was recognized in 2021 as the oldest surviving Larks
player. He was also drafted by the Kansas City Athletics and played one summer
for their Houston farm club. His baseball hero was Ted Williams.&nbsp;

Through high school and college Arlen worked at the Hays
Daily News in various capacities, including news reporting, sports reporting,
and photography. His favorite assignment was photographing the bison herd at
the Hays City Park under the direction of newspaper publisher, Mrs. Leota Motz,
who encouraged him to get up close for the shot. This assignment made for a
good story for the rest of his life.

After his military service, Arlen began working as a
salesman for Carpenter Paper Company in the northwest quadrant of Kansas. He
married Muriel Louise Campbell, literally the girl next door, in 1964. They
welcomed their son, Craig, in 1965. The family moved to Lawrence, KS, where he
continued to work for Carpenter which eventually became Nationwide Paper and
from which he retired after 40 years with the company.&nbsp;

The family’s proximity to the University of Kansas in
Lawrence was a priority as they were avid Jayhawk fans with season tickets to
football and basketball games. Their loyalty continued through the years even
as Arlen and Muriel followed their family to Las Vegas in 2004. They were
thrilled to be able to watch their granddaughters blossom through childhood and
into successful adults. Both granddaughters got married in 2024.

In his retirement years Arlen and Muriel experienced
adventures in U.S. and world travel. Their lifetime travels included all 50
states and 47 foreign countries. In addition, Arlen undertook the updates of
the Billinger family genealogy, a monumental endeavor resulting in displaying
information on new generations. He also kept his cousins up to date on events
in the family through emails for which they were grateful.

He is survived by his son, Craig and his wife, Deneen, of
Las Vegas; his beloved granddaughters and their husbands, Megan and Brian
Schmeer of Sandy, UT, and Abby and Leo Roese, of Denver, CO; his sister,
Kathleen Ochs, and her husband, Darrel, of Gypsum, CO; niece, Allison, her
husband, Dan Kent, and their son, Wyatt (who loved his great uncle) of Eagle,
CO; his sister-in-law, Diana Walters of Munds Park, AZ; his sister-in-law,
Patricia Campbell Byram, and her three sons, Steve Brock, David Brock, and Dan Byram
and his wife Amy, of Springfield, MO. He was especially close to his godson,
Dan Byram and his son, Alex, also Arlen’s godson; one aunt, and numerous
cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel, his parents,
Cyril (Slim) and Catherine (Katie) Walters, his brother David; all but one of
his many aunts and uncles; several cousins; and many friends.

He was cremated and his cremains will be buried with
Muriel’s in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Hays, KS. The family suggests donations to
TMP/Marian High School, 1701 Hall Street, Hays, KS 67601.

The show teased “a special episode with a VERY special guest” on social media Monday, sharing an orange background and a mysterious silhouette that many believed to be Swift. It turned out to be true, the show’s social media accounts confirmed later, at the same time Swift announced her 12th studio album.

This year’s 5th annual Hays Public Library Foundation Fundraiser will feature Kansas basketball great Jackie Stiles as guest speaker. The Wine &amp; Cheese event will be on October 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hays Public Library.

The fundraiser will begin with a wine and cheese social hour, followed by an impactful presentation from Stiles. From her hometown of Claflin, to a professional career in the WNBA, Stiles inspired millions as she rewrote the women’s basketball record books. Stiles held the NCAA women’s scoring record for 16 years and was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. 

Stiles continues to reach people of all ages through personal training, basketball camps, and public speaking.

The Hays Public Library Foundation was established in 2001 to serve as a source for funding emergent and unexpected needs and events associated with the library. Most recently the Foundation’s fundraising efforts covered the cost to remodel the Kansas Room, which was completed this spring.

Kansas basketball great to speak at Hays Public Library Foundation fundraiser

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man accused in the murder of a woman whose body was found in a Wichita park has admitted to killing 30-year-old Mariana Christian.

 </figure>SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man accused in the murder of a woman whose body was found in a Wichita park has admitted to killing 30-year-old Mariana Christian.On Monday, 31-year-old Kyle Bearden entered a plea of guilty during an evidentiary hearing before Judge Jeffrey Goering, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.The plea agreement calls for the parties to jointly recommend a prison sentence of life with parole eligibility after 25 years, to be followed by an additional 15 years of imprisonment if parole is granted.<figure>

 </figure>Around 10:30 a.m. on July 21, a friend of Mariana Christian filed a missing person report. The friend said Ms. Christian had a history of mental health challenges and often relied on them for transportation to work. That morning, Christian was not at her home in the 1200 block of S. Paige when the friend arrived to pick her up.At the residence, the friend encountered an unidentified man later identified as Kyle Bearden who said he didn’t know Ms. Christian’s whereabouts.He claimed Mariana Christian had left the apartment on Friday, July 18, in a truck with an unknown man and woman and hadn’t returned. He also expressed concern for her safety. Although not listed on the lease, the man appeared to be living in the apartment.Although Ms. Christian was last seen on Friday, July 18, she wasn’t reported missing until Monday, July 21. After multiple failed attempts to reach her and finding her absence unusual, the friend contacted police. Officers issued an attempt-to-locate alert, and investigators took over the case.WPD investigators identified Bearden as a person of interest. They followed leads to locate Ms. Christian, discovering evidence of her death and where her remains were left in Cottonwood Park near Armor and Bayley in Wichita.Wichita Police officers responded to the area and located human remains. Investigators believe Bearden shot Ms. Christian.Crime scene investigators processed Ms. Christian’s apartment and found evidence of foul play.On the morning of July 31, the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center positively identified the remains as those of Mariana Christian.Kyle Bearden was arrested on July 30 and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.&nbsp; &nbsp;His sentencing is scheduled for October 20.
