William "Bill" Charles Borneman, 62, a resident of Gooding, Idaho,&nbsp; died from a farm accident at the family farm in rural Gooding County.

Bill was born on May 5, 1957, in Quincy, California, the son of 
Frank and Dorothy (Garms) Borneman. He was raised and educated in Quincy
 until 1972 when the family moved to Gooding, Idaho. The first grain 
crop on the Gooding farm needed to be harvested, so asking the locals 
“who is the best combiner around?” they were referred to Jim Bright and 
his Gleaner A’s. Bill was thoroughly impressed! During his time 
attending Gooding High School he became active in FFA, and the budding 
love and fascination of Gleaner combines fueled his FFA project of 
starting a custom harvesting business, his first combine, a Gleaner C, 
was purchased.

He graduated from Gooding High School in 1975 and that summer 
answered a “help wanted” ad in the recently discovered High Plains 
Journal and joined a custom harvesting crew from Oklahoma that ran 2 
brand new Gleaner M combines. Following that experience he joked that 
before he died he wanted to be a Texan, Okie, or a Kansan. He attended 
and graduated from Eastern Idaho Vo-Tech with a diesel mechanics 
certificate in 1977. He later went on and worked for various implement 
dealers in Idaho and Colorado before returning to the family farm to 
pursue custom harvesting and equipment repair and salvage.

In 1983, Bill met Donna Huber and they were married on June 23, 
1984 in Gooding. A year later they began farming and since then they 
have worked side by side the duration of their marriage. In June of 
1989, their daughter Sarah was born and son Robert was born in August 
1990. In 1993, they purchased a homestead and grassland in Ransom, 
Kansas and moved in 1994. This is when Bill began the business of used 
farm equipment sales, and was rather pleased to then get the High Plains
 Journal even earlier so he wouldn’t miss out on all the bargains. They 
resided there until 1999 when they bought their Edson, Kansas farm. Bill
 continued with the equipment sales and did small-time custom 
harvesting, and later took over farming the Edson farm. &nbsp;In 2018, 
following the passing of his mother, Bill and Donna returned to Gooding 
to manage the family farm.

Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Donna of Gooding and 
his daughter, Sarah of Hays, KS and son, Robert of Edson, KS, his sister
 Kathy Spooner of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, his cousins Herb, Gary and 
Gayle Garms, and Tom and Jim Borneman, his many brother and 
sister-in-laws and many more nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Dorothy.

Bill will be remembered for his vast collection of Gleaner 
combines, Oliver tractors, his thrill of a good auction (and running to 
get the next bargain at the other auction ring), his willingness to help
 a fellow man, his story telling, and not knowing a stranger.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a Hospice 
organization of your choice or to plant a tree in remembrance, or to 
spend on that pile of junk wagon goodies or a Gleaner combine at an 
auction so Bill doesn’t have to take it home.

Cremation arrangements are under the care and direction of Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel.

William 'Bill' Charles Borneman

Clarice Elaine Peteete&nbsp;(Kelly), a lifelong nurse and educator, was born April 29, 1924, as the fourth child of her beloved parents Herman Albertis “Bert” and Theodora (Pacak) Kelly.&nbsp;

Clarice grew up in the small Kansas community of Montrose alongside her five siblings: Faye, Mildred, Irvin, Molly, and Orris.

Growing up, Clarice had a knack for excelling in whatever she set her mind to. As a student, Clarice’s teachers remembered her as one of the brightest students they ever taught. Her classmates likely agreed as Clarice, getting her start as a teacher early, was known for tutoring struggling classmates in complex science subjects – subjects that would become a lifelong passion of hers. As an athlete, Clarice was the girls singles tennis state champion three years in a row and a softball pitcher feared by other schools. A lover of music and a talented pianist, Clarice rarely had a chance to dance at school dances or parties as her classmates relied on her to play the music.

In the midst of the Second World War, Clarice graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1942, and like many other young women, did her part supporting the war effort. She moved to Wichita, where she worked in the Beech Aircraft Factory as a secretary and joined the Beech Guardettes.

Eventually, however, Clarice, a lover of science, learning, and helping others, found herself drawn to nursing. In 1944 she moved to Topeka and was inducted into the United States Cadet Nurse Corps, serving at St. Francis Hospital. Clarice's dream of becoming a flight nurse and serving on the frontlines was dashed when she found out she was half an inch too tall.

Whatever her backup plans may have been, it didn’t matter once she met James (or “Jimmy” as she called him at the time), an airman stationed at nearby Forbes Field. It was on a blind, double date set up by her roommate Lila she met James Peteete, her future husband. Lila’s date, Rob, had gone through basic training with Jim and, after both were shot down over Europe, were prisoners of war alongside each other. These two couples, Jim and Clarice and Lila and Rob would remain lifelong friends.

In 1946, a few months short of Clarice’s graduation, Jim received new orders to report to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Despite his insistence she should graduate, that he would wait for her, Clarice did a thoroughly modern thing – she proposed to him (and likely wouldn’t have taken no for an answer). They were married in Topeka, where Clarice, ever the trailblazer, forewent a traditional wedding dress for a beautiful golden suit. Thus began their marriage of 70 years.

They had their first child, James “Kelly,” a year later in 1947. The couple would have seven more children over the years: Pat, Terry, Mike, Linda, Becky, Matt, and Sean.

Clarice and Jim chose to raise their children in her hometown of Montrose. There, Clarice was highly involved in the community, teaching music, organizing musicals, and running the local Farmer’s Co-op office. She accomplished all of this while raising a growing young family.

In 1970, the family moved to Hays because Clarice made, for the time, a brave decision – she wanted to go back to school. Clarice and Jim would remain in Hays for the rest of their lives. All while working full-time as a nurse’s assistant at a local hospital and raising young children, Clarice completed her long-delayed Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Fort Hays State University in 1972. Clarice followed her BSN up with a Master in Secondary Education degree from FHSU in 1979 and a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Kansas in 1983.

After graduation in 1972, Clarice worked as a charge nurse at a local hospital but, more importantly, began working as a nursing instructor at FHSU, reigniting her passion for teaching. Clarice eventually became an Associate Professor at FHSU. Asked on several occasions to consider becoming the Chair of the Nursing Department, Clarice would always say no. She wanted to keep doing what she loved – working side-by-side with students.

A beloved professor, Clarice was voted FHSU’s best faculty member by the graduating class of 1977, winning the prestigious Pilot Award in gratitude for her teaching, advice, and friendship. More than mere awards, a better example of the love Clarice’s students had for her was in how often former students would come up to her whenever and wherever they saw her, even decades later, to tell her how much she meant to them as a professor.

Clarice retired from FHSU in 1990 but not from teaching. She continued as an educator by helping to create a rural nursing education outreach program. She traveled the state, giving lectures and teaching health programs to people in small, rural Kansas communities. It wasn’t until 1995, at the age of 71, Clarice finally retired.

In her retirement, Clarice put the same effort, love, and attention into her family and grandchildren. She was always quick to drop everything to dote on her grandchildren, making sure her cookie jar was always full, her schedule was free to spend hours catching up and taking them on adventures to see dinosaurs at the Sternberg or FHSU’s bison herd. She was truly the matriarch of her family and was deeply important to every one of them.

Ultimately, Clarice, a vibrant, loving person, blazed a trail for young women after her. As a “mother to everyone,” her strengths were obvious to those lucky enough to meet her. It was obvious in her supreme kindness and love for others; it was obvious from her absolute joy in seeing others succeed; it was obvious from her desire to support others through their struggles. Most of all, however, it was obvious from her willingness through each stage of her life, whether as a young woman or as a grandmother, to give her all to help others. Clarice touched many lives in this community and will be dearly missed by all who had a chance to enjoy her friendship, mentorship, and love.

Clarice is survived by one brother, Orris Kelly, and one sister, Molly McCampbell. She is also survived by seven children, Kelly, Linda, Terry, Mike, Becky, Matt, and Sean, nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be 10 AM Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church - Hays, 305 West 7th Street, Hays, KS 67601.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow the services in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Republic County, KS.

Clarice Elaine Peteete (Kelly)

Eric Eugene Pfeifer, 31, died on March 
5, 2021, from complications of Type 1 diabetes, at his home in 
Warrensburg, Missouri.&nbsp; He was a 2007 graduate of Victoria High School.

He was born in Joplin, Missouri on 
December 13, 1989, and lived most of his childhood in Carthage, 
Missouri.&nbsp; Eric joined the Tom and Kathy Pfeifer family when he was five
 years old.&nbsp; Eric served two years in the United States Air Force and 
was a member of the Honor Guard.

Eric had an infectious grin and enjoyed
 visiting with everyone; he found Victoria connections wherever he was, 
occasionally even in Warrensburg.&nbsp; Eric was always ready to talk about 
his beloved Kansas City and KU sports teams or his pets.&nbsp; However, 
friends, family, and community were the things he valued most.&nbsp; He 
claimed that family vacations as a child were some of the best times of 
his life; and, as an adult, he began planning his next visit with family
 on the return trip from seeing them.

When he graduated from high school, his
 Grandma Arlene Pfeifer asked him what he wanted to do with his life.&nbsp; 
He responded, “Get married and have a family.”

Eric is survived by his son Austin; his
 parents Tom and Kathy Pfeifer; siblings: Matt, Nick, Shelly, Cody, and 
Ashlyn Pfeifer, Derek Sage, and Dorsie Schrum; and several nieces and 
nephews.&nbsp; He leaves behind Jennifer Ridge and her three daughters and 
Ashly Sollars-Pfeifer.&nbsp; Eric was preceded in death by an unborn child.&nbsp;
 Eric also leaves behind three grandparents: Al and Arlene Pfeifer of 
Victoria and Gordon King of Council Grove, KS.&nbsp; He is survived by 
numerous aunts and uncles.

Inurnment is scheduled for Friday, 
August, 13, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in 
WaKeeney, with Fr. Charles Steier officiating.

Eric Eugene Pfeifer

Nancy L. (Zelfer) Opunui, 64, of Dighton, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on June 8, 1957, in Topeka, the third child of Frank and Bertha (Johnson) Zelfer.

Nancy’s childhood was spent growing up in Emmett, before moving to Goodland with her family. She then attended school in Brewster, graduating in 1976.

She later met the love of her life, Frank, in Goodland, while he was attending vo-tech. Frank began working in Dighton for the telephone company in 1979; they called Dighton home. On Sept. 6, 1982, Nancy married Franklin “Frank” Keana Opunui in Ness City. This union continued until his passing on January 7, 2021.&nbsp;

Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. She was a devoted homemaker and helped care for many ladies over the years in town. She loved socializing at the Kwik Shop and was one to always find the best garage sales in the area. Nancy was known for her collection of Santas, which were&nbsp;more than 300 collected, and loved showing them off. She loved driving around in her green “Kermit” car. She didn’t get her driver's license until after she was 40 years old. Nancy always wanted to know what her nieces and nephews were up to, as she liked to brag about them to her friends and family.&nbsp;

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brother, Otis Zelfer.

Nancy leaves behind her siblings, Tom (Deloris) Zelfer, of Grainfield, Peggy (Kenneth) Richmeier, of Hays, Kelly (Julie) Zelfer, of New Rockford, N.D., and Sam (Diane) Zelfer, of Goodland; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, one great-great-nephew; and many other family and friends.&nbsp;

A private family burial service will take place at a later date in Goodland for both Nancy and Frank. Memorials may be given to Nancy Opunui Memorial Fund in care of Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home, PO Box 553, Scott City, KS 67871.

 </figure>Nancy L. (Zelfer) Opunui, 64, of Dighton, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. She was born on June 8, 1957, in Topeka, the third child of Frank and Bertha (Johnson) Zelfer.Nancy’s childhood was spent growing up in Emmett, before moving to Goodland with her family. She then attended school in Brewster, graduating in 1976.She later met the love of her life, Frank, in Goodland, while he was attending vo-tech. Frank began working in Dighton for the telephone company in 1979; they called Dighton home. On Sept. 6, 1982, Nancy married Franklin “Frank” Keana Opunui in Ness City. This union continued until his passing on January 7, 2021.&nbsp;Nancy was a member of the First Christian Church in Dighton. She was a devoted homemaker and helped care for many ladies over the years in town. She loved socializing at the Kwik Shop and was one to always find the best garage sales in the area. Nancy was known for her collection of Santas, which were&nbsp;more than 300 collected, and loved showing them off. She loved driving around in her green “Kermit” car. She didn’t get her driver's license until after she was 40 years old. Nancy always wanted to know what her nieces and nephews were up to, as she liked to brag about them to her friends and family.&nbsp;Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and brother, Otis Zelfer.Nancy leaves behind her siblings, Tom (Deloris) Zelfer, of Grainfield, Peggy (Kenneth) Richmeier, of Hays, Kelly (Julie) Zelfer, of New Rockford, N.D., and Sam (Diane) Zelfer, of Goodland; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, one great-great-nephew; and many other family and friends.&nbsp;A private family burial service will take place at a later date in Goodland for both Nancy and Frank. The Kansas Education Commissioner was back in Hays on Tuesday asking if the state's Kansans Can school redesign, which focuses on applied skills, is still preparing students for life after K-12.

The answer was yes, but Kansas schools still have a way to go.

Kansas Education Commissioner Randy Watson first toured the state, including Hays in 2015 and 2016. After years of schools measuring student success on the basis of state assessments, employers said students were graduating without the skills needed to be effective workers.

Kansans need to help students connect why in geometry it is important to know slope,&nbsp;Brad Neuenswander, deputy education commissioner, told the Hays audience.

"If it's a 6/12, you're not walking on it," he said. "If it's a 4/12, maybe," Neuenswander said.

&nbsp;Business leaders said while being academically prepared is important, non-academic skills far outweigh academic skills, Neuenswander said.

"Predominantly what Kansans said was that they have to be able to use it in real-world, on-the-job applications, not just memorizing it to get the questions at the end of the chapter and pass the test,"&nbsp;Neuenswander said.

Eighty-one percent of business focus group members cited non-academic skills as the most needed attribute in new hires.

Skills that businesses said high school graduates were lacking included: • Professionalism/work ethic • Teamwork/collaboration • Verbal communication • Ethics/social responsibility • Critical thinking/problem solving • Information technology applications • Written communication • Diversity • Lifelong learning/self-direction • Creativity/innovation

"Business and industry says, 'I don't care what their ACT score is,' "&nbsp;Neuenswander said. "They did really well on the test, but they don't use it in real-world applications."

Businesses said even college graduates are missing many of the non-academic skills they need to be leaders.

"I with the CEO of Cerner. ... They hire tons of engineers and IT and computer scientists," Watson said. "They said they know their craft really well, but they can't project manage. They can't work in a team. They're not creative. They are just ... ugh.

"Why don't you quit sending us 4.0 students? They make great middle managers. They do exactly what they're told. I need people who reinvent our organization," he said.&nbsp;

These non-academic skills had traditionally been learned at home, on the farm and at church, Watson said.

"We don't know the reason, but it's shifted," he said. "A lot kids are good kids, but they just don't have these skills."

Today, kids are learning these skills in FFA, drama, sports or other extracurricular activities, but Watson argued students should be learnings these skills in core subjects, such as math, as well.

As the state has worked through redesign it aimed to individualize instruction, incorporate real-life problems into learning and focus on teaching students how to apply what they've learned, Watson said.

The plan included shifting school counselors' focus from scheduling to helping students with career planning and working with business to create opportunities for job shadows and internships.

A focus was also placed on pre-kindergarten education. Watson said the largest learning gap is in kindergarten. Some children come into kindergarten and are reading on a third-grade level, while others can't distinguish between a number and a letter and don't know their colors.

"Over the years, we catch it up, but we never get it entirely caught," he said.

He said schools need to do better jobs of designing education around students who will go on to two-year post-secondary and certification programs instead of just four-year colleges.

Schools need to create more individualized plans for students instead of conveyor belts that revolve around time, age and content, Watson said.

Focus groups also reported they wanted students to complete community service before graduation, something that some schools in the state have made a graduation requirement.

After the first state tour, the state set a "moon shot" goal of redesigning the state's schools during the next 10 years to address the issues the focus groups had raised. School districts volunteered to look at issues, including social and emotion engagement, and parent and community and engagement and incorporate improvements into their curriculums.

Each school has come up with different strategies to meet their students' needs and the goals of the redesign. Watson said not all of them have been successful. The state is re-evaluating the successes of the school redesigns to see what strategies have worked.

Statewide numbers indicate some have, Watson said.

In the last five years, graduation rates among all students are up 2.6 percent to 88.3 percent.

Graduation rates among subgroups are as follows: • English as a second language students 83.7 percent — up 6.5 percent • Students receiving free and reduced-price lunches 81.2 percent — up 3.7 percent • Students with disabilities 80.3 percent — up 3.1 percent.

The state's goal is a graduation rate for all students of 95 percent. Watson said the state has made progress, but still has a ways to go.

KS Education Department renews focus on building practical skills

Bernice Amelia (Ruder) Unrein, age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 17, 2021, in Overland Park, KS.

Bernice was born August 3, 1928, in Hays, KS, to Carl and Rosa (Rupp)
 Ruder and delivered by her future father-in-law, Dr. Gerard Unrein. 
Bernice grew up on the family farm south of Hays and her parents 
eventually moved to town when she was in high school. She graduated from
 Girls Catholic High School in 1946 and worked as a telephone operator 
until her first child was born.

Bernice met the love of her life, Francis Alfred Unrein, in high 
school and they were married on June 7, 1948, in Hays. They were happily
 married for 69 years until Francis’ death in 2017. To this union 
brought four children Keith (Sandy), Overland Park, Marybeth (Warren) 
Harwick, Ft. Worth, TX, Kevin (Jyl) Chanute, and Robin (David) Hagedorn,
 Mission.

Upon Francis’ graduation from the University of Kansas School of 
Pharmacy, job opportunities in Norton and Oakley brought Francis and 
Bernice back to North Central Kansas and eventually Francis purchased 
his own store, Unrein Drug Store, in Plainville, KS, their home for the 
next 59 years. Francis and Bernice owned and operated the drugstore 
until Francis’ retirement in 1991.

Throughout her life, Bernice was an active member of the Rooks County
 Health Center Auxiliary, volunteering in the gift shop, Sacred Heart 
Catholic Parish, and later Curè of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood. She 
was a devoted wife to Francis and mourned his loss every day. She loved 
being a mother but her role as a grandmother and great grandmother 
brought her the most joy. &nbsp;Bernice also enjoyed cooking, gardening, 
close friendships, hosting family get-togethers, embroidery, knitting, 
and making sure everyone had something to eat or drink (even in her 
final days.) You could often find Bernice and Francis on the golf 
course, relaxing on their patio, and watching the KU Jayhawks and golf 
on tv. Bernice loved and defended fiercely those close to her.&nbsp; With 
perseverance, she survived breast cancer, a stroke, moving to Kansas 
City in her 80s and embracing life after Francis’ death. She had a 
beautiful smile, joyful laugh, rosy cheeks and great hair. She loved her
 family, her faith and friends, but nothing compared to the love she had
 for Francis.

Bernice was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, Francis, 
brothers Marcellus, Alphonse, Julius and Norman, sisters Irene Munsch, 
Mary Rose Dreiling, and Alma Keaton, and son-in-law, Alan McClure. She 
is survived by her sister, Lorraine Arnold Cook of Denver, CO; her four 
children and spouses, and many extended relatives. Bernice was a loving 
“Mimi” to her grandchildren Lindsay (Jonathan) McPhail, Fairway, Kelly 
(Drew) Nicholls, Georgetown, Grand Cayman, and Spencer McClure (Erin 
Horn), Ft. Worth, TX. She was also the proud “Great Mimi” of great 
grandsons, Kai and Keiran McPhail, and great granddaughter, Astrid 
McClure.

Visitation will be at Curè of Ars Catholic Church, 9401 Mission Road,
 Leawood, Kansas 66206, on Tuesday August 3, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., 
followed by a rosary at 10:45 a.m.&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial will follow

Bernice Amelia (Ruder) Unrein

Keith Gerard Zerr, 63, of Gove, KS, died Friday, July 9th, 2021, at Gove
 County Medical Center, after a difficult and well-fought battle with 
colorectal cancer. He was born in Oakley, KS; the fourth child to Peter 
C. and Blanche Zerr. 
Forever in a hurry to get where he was going, he was nearly born in the 
car on the way to the hospital. As a child, he enjoyed playing games 
with his siblings and cousins. Keith remembered having very few toys in 
those days, so they played many of the “classic” games—baseball, 
football, Red Rover, kick-the-can, tag, and hide-and-seek, just to name a
 few. Keith’s favorite games were the ones his sister, Lynette, just 
made up, and of course, the miniature farm that he and his brother, 
Darren, created under the backyard trees. Some of Keith’s favorite 
memories were the family vacations with the Joneses that covered almost 
every inch of the state of Colorado. Until his last breath, Keith and 
his family were very close. In addition to his three brothers and one 
sister, Keith had more than 70 cousins, and each and every one of them 
held a special place in his heart. 
Keith graduated from Wheatland High School in May of 1976. From there he
 attended Fort Hays State University to pursue a degree in agribusiness,
 which he earned in 1980. Keith returned home to continue working with 
his father on the family farm near Gove, where he went on to meet the 
love of his life, Jacky Heier. They were later married in May of 1986 
and went on to have five children. 
Growing up, Keith remembered his family enjoying music—and soon, music 
became a large part of his life too. He first enjoyed the piano and then
 the saxophone. At Fort Hays State, he was introduced to his favorite 
instrument: the guitar. Not counting family and the Lord, this hobby was
 the love of his life. Through the years, he played in several bands, 
singing, and playing guitar, and was lucky enough to form lifelong 
friendships along the way. Ultimately, his passion and talent earned him
 his nickname “Keith Guitar Zerr”—which stuck with him ever since. His 
favorite guitar experience was playing for Mass at St. Agnes, and his 
biggest regret was having that cut short just as he was getting the hang
 of it. 
Keith felt very fortunate to have had a successful career in 
agriculture. This labor of love was largely successful because of his 
loving and understanding wife, Jacky; a wonderful partner in his older 
brother, Kevin; a solid foundation laid by his parents and grandparents;
 and finally, the dedicated efforts of his children. 
Keith is survived by his wife, Jacky Zerr, of Gove, KS; his five 
children, Jordan Zerr, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jason (Whitney) Zerr, of 
Grainfield, KS, Kenton (Jennifer) Zerr, of Overland Park, KS, Kaitlyn 
(Keaton) Knott of Leawood, KS, and Kirsten Zerr (fiancé Collin Schmidt) 
of Overland Park, KS; his grandchildren, Liam, Eli, and Natalie Zerr 
(Jason and Whitney’s), Luca and Noah Zerr (Kenton and Jennifer’s); his 
mother, Blanche Zerr, of Quinter, KS; and his four siblings, Dennis 
Zerr, of Garden City, KS, Kevin Zerr (Peggy Huelsman) of Nemaha, KS, 
Lynette (Terry) Steinbrecher, of Denver, CO, and Darren (Sherri) Zerr,

Nathan Thomas Peterka, 35, of Paola, Kansas left this world on June 13, 2021. You may have known him as “Turkey," “Nater," “Nateman,” “Nate” or “Nae Nae.” If you knew Nathan, you know the world will not be the same without him.

Nathan was born June 21, 1985, in Hays, Kansas, to Tom Peterka and Galene (Brown) Steckel.&nbsp; Throughout his childhood, he was always on the move. If something were going to be wrecked, spilled or disassembled, he was the one who would do it. No snow globe was safe around Nathan. You would likely find him in the spotlight, showing off his karate moves, and always with a big smile. He had a special and long-lasting connection with everyone he crossed paths with. Each person holds memories close to their heart that lead to laughter and comfort when shared.

Nathan married Lindsy (Harders) Peterka on September 13, 2013, by the river, one of his favorite places. He loved their dogs, Stella and Cali, tremendously. So much, in fact, Nathan and Lindsy took their dogs to the river or lake several times a week. It was their family’s happy place. From cooking to canning, Nathan was game, as long as it was food related. He could make a gourmet meal out of a bologna sandwich.&nbsp; All his nieces can attest to this. &nbsp;

Nathan loved outdoor adventures such as kayaking, camping, riding ATVs, dirt bikes, and of course, shooting, because he learned from the best: his stepfather, Rod Steckel. It was not uncommon to find him in the backyard in his hammock under the stars. He was frequently found (involuntarily) working on projects with his dad who lived next door -- kinda hard to hide from. On the contrary, his mom was always hearing, “We will get it done, mom”. His brothers and sisters will never forget the nicknames he had for them and the distinct way he answered their phone calls.&nbsp;

Nathan will be fondly remembered for his sarcastic sense of humor, his bubbly spirit, and outgoing personality. His quick-wit and ability to turn on the charm made him a stranger to nobody and a friend to all. His family often describes him as being a pain in the butt, but ultimately, they loved him for it. They will miss his teasing and poking fun because nobody can quite “tell it like it is” the way Nathan could.&nbsp;

First Call for Help is making its last push to raise the remaining funds to open its transitional housing program in Hays.

Work on the four units at its building at 607 E. 13th is almost complete. The First Step Housing Project hopes to welcome its first residents in August.

The program is $11,000 from a goal to raise $50,000 by the end of June to earn a $50,000 match from the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation.&nbsp;

If the program is able to raise enough funds to receive its full match, it will be within $15,000 of raising the total $250,000 to purchase items needed for the start-up of the program.

However, First Call for Help Director Linda Mills said enough has been raised to complete construction and open in August.

The project has the appliances for the renovated space, as well as bedding. The Heartland Community Foundation awarded the project a grant to pay for the project's keyless entry system and exterior security cameras.

In the month of June, the First Step program is hosting a Chef's Cuisine Fundraiser. Sake2Me, Chartwells and Gella's have recorded cooking demonstrations.

The First Step project will focus on people who live in Hays or the area and have become temporarily homeless.

The First Step facility encompasses about 1,000 square feet and consist of four units in the rear of First Call for Help's existing building.

Each bedroom will have bunk beds with its own private bathroom. One unit is handicap accessible. The facility will have a shared laundry facility and kitchenette, as well as a small community room.

The facility have room for eight people, possibly more if a family with children uses a cot or a crib.

The walls and sheet rock are up. Workers are ready to putty and sand and will soon install the flooring.

The program will accept families, single parents with children and single females — no single males. Participants have to be drug- and alcohol-free and not have a criminal history that includes violent or sexual crimes.

The participants will stay at in the transitional units up to six months, Mills said.

During that time, Laura Allen, First Call for Help client services specialist, will help the resident work through a financial literacy program. They can save for a deposit for their own rental. If they are unemployed, they can work toward finding a job, Mills said.

"What we want to focus on with them is the obstacles that have caused them to struggle in the area of housing," Mills said. "Whether that is straight up not enough income, then we will work on that."

First Call for Help has already had a trial run with the financial classes thanks to a grant from New York Life. The agency is using a free financial literacy program available through the FDIC.

Mills said it is hard to determine how many homeless people are in Hays or the surrounding area.

"We know from the number of people who come in here every year that ask us if we can help them get a house ... We have probably had four calls in the last two weeks. ... We do get a lot of calls of people looking for help to get into housing," she said.

First Call for Helps' programs are an oasis in northwest Kansas. No other homeless shelters exist between Salina and Denver.

The program used to issue vouchers to individuals and families for overnight stays in local hotels. This was often used by the transient homeless population, however, this program was discontinued.

Two of the hotels First Call for Help used have been torn down. The other hotels will no longer accept the vouchers because of behavior problems with the voucher guests in the past.

First Call for Help continues to provide rental and utility assistance to people who qualify, as well as a small food and diaper pantry.

Event seeks to answer questions for those newly eligible for Medicare

Arc of the Central Plains athletes competed for medals and came home with smiles from the group's track and field competition Wednesday night at the FHSU Track and Field Facility.

This is the first track meet in which the athletes have been able to compete since 2019. The 2020 and 2021 Kansas Special Olympics games were canceled due to concerns over COVID-19.

Brent Kaiser, Arc activities director, said the group felt they could conduct the games safely since the activities were all set to be outdoors.

"It is important to just get them back in the swing of things and get them back going," he said. "We wanted them to feel special and have those opportunities to be successful again."

Athletes competed in turbo javelin, softball throw, shot put, long jump, running and run/walk events.

"I think the social side is the most important," Kaiser said. "I think that is what they have been missing the most ... I think they just like being out here with their fellow athletes."

The Hays Striders track club joined the Arc athletes for running events as a warm up for their upcoming meet in Hays. FHSU athletics, as well as many volunteers from the community, assisted at the meet.

The Arc didn't have enough athletes to fill all the heats, and the Striders helped to do that. The Striders families also increased the crowd, which Kaiser said added to the atmosphere of the meet.

One athlete received a special surprise Wednesday night.&nbsp;Kacey Dannels of Hays learned she will be attending her second Special Olympics USA games in 2022. She also attended the USA games in 2018 in Seattle.

Dannels said she was very excited to be going to Orlando next year. She said she does not know what events in which she will compete. Wednesday night Dannels, 28, competed in the 800m, shot put and running long jump.

"I felt great about my run," she said. "It's hard to do, but you just have to put your mind to it to be able to do it."

Dannels also works at the north McDonald's in Hays.

Dannels will need to raise $1,000 to fund her trip. She is getting a late start, as she was chosen to replace another athlete who could not make the trip.

Local athlete Tyler Powers also has been chosen as an athlete in bowling for the 2022 USA games. He has already raised enough funds for his trip.

Arc Buffaloes compete in track, field; 1 runner headed to USA games

Bryan Keith McDonald, 59, of Raymore, Missouri passed away on May 21, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO surrounded by his wife Tammy and two sons, Shane and Shawn.&nbsp; He was born the son of Merlyn and Marvel (Albin) McDonald in Denver, CO, on September 25, 1961. He was a 1980 graduate of Trego Community High School.

On June 25, 1983, Bryan was united in marriage to Tammy LeAnn Wendland of Oberlin, KS. He attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. He then continued his education attending Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, KS and graduated with his electrical journeyman’s license.&nbsp; He was a former resident of WaKeeney and Parker, Colorado before calling Raymore, MO his home. Bryan had his journeyman’s license in Kansas, Colorado and Missouri and he worked over 35 years loving what he did. &nbsp;

Bryan was an avid Denver Bronco fan and loved to tail gate and cheer them on. He loved to coach his sons in various youth sports and later enjoyed getting to cheer them on with their love for soccer. He enjoyed visiting Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park, CO. He loved his pets. He had a great sense of humor and his two favorite holidays were the 4th of July and Christmas. He enjoyed any chance to get together with family.&nbsp;

Bryan is survived by his wife, Tammy and two sons, Shane P. and Shawn R. cousins. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his mother, Marvel V. McDonald and sister-in-law, Trina Ruel.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;There will be a visitation Friday, June 4, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 
7:00 p.m. at Schmitt Funeral Home in WaKeeney, KS. A celebration of 
Bryan’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 5, 2021, at the 
funeral home. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Collyer, KS.&nbsp; Family
 and friends are welcome to gather at the Eagle’s Club in WaKeeney, KS 
following burial to visit, share memories, and celebrate the life of 
Bryan.

On March 13, 1927, Barbara Katherine Schroeder was born to Charles F
 and Margaret M (Arendt) Schroeder at home, on their farm in rural 
Rawlins County, Kansas, near Atwood. Barbara was the fourth of their 
eleven children. She passed away May 15, 2021, at Prairie Senior Living 
Complex in Colby at the age of 94.
 From 1933 to 1941, Barbara attended Shawnee Country School in rural 
Rawlins County. She stayed home for a year after 8th grade to help her 
mother. She attended Leoville High School in Leoville, Kansas for her 
Freshman year, 1942 to 1943, where she boarded with a local family and 
helped around their house and with their children. From 1943 to 1945,&nbsp; she attended Atwood High School. In the fall of 1945, she attended 
Concordia Catholic School in Concordia, Kansas where she graduated in 
1946.
 Barbara married Lyle A Olberding on September 15, 1947, and moved to 
Colby, Kansas. He worked for the Kansas-Nebraska Natural Gas Company 
which transferred him to Arapahoe, Nebraska in 1953. They lived in 
Arapahoe and raised their five children there until his death in 1966. 
Barbara was a homemaker, an excellent cook, enjoyed bowling, playing for
 the women’s softball team, getting together with friends. In Arapahoe 
she was an active member of St Germanus Catholic Church Altar Society. 
After her children started school, she worked nights as a nurse’s aide 
at the Arapahoe Rest Home. 
 After Lyle passed away, Barbara’s brother, Fulgence, offered his 
home to her and her children. In the summer of 1967, they moved to the 
farm where she was born. Wherever she lived, she planted a vegetable 
garden, a patch of strawberries, and would spend days canning. She 
drove a school bus for Atwood Public Schools and was the catcher for the
 Atwood Roadrunners softball team. 
 In 1973 Barbara, Lylea and Danial moved to the town of Atwood. She 
worked for the Atwood Medical Clinic and the Atwood Hospital. 
 Barbara married Patrick J (Joe) Mindrup on August 4, 1979, and moved 
to his farm near New Almelo, Kansas. She worked as the parish secretary
 for St Joseph’s Catholic Church and was an active member of St Joseph’s
 Altar Society. She loved playing cards, especially canasta and 
pinochle. She really loved square dancing. and Barbara and Joe were 
often asked to lead the wedding march at local wedding receptions. 
 Joe moved to Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby in 2006. 
Barbara remained on the farm near New Almelo until 2010 when she joined 
Joe in Colby. At PSLC she enjoyed bingo games, going on field trips, 
attended mass, and participated in the rosary. Most of all, she loved 
spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
 Barbara was preceded in death by her husbands, Lyle Olberding and 
Joe Mindrup; son Paul Olberding; stepson John Mindrup, and grandson 
Zachary Meyer. 
 She is survived by her children, Carl Olberding and his wife 
Roxanne, (Grantsburg, WI), Rose Marie Fortina and her husband Chuck 
(Elkhorn, NE), Lylea Meyer and her husband John (Siren, WI), Danial 
Olberding (Largo, FL), and daughter-in-law Ginny Olberding (Litchfield, 
MN); stepchildren, Elizabeth Jansonius (née Mindrup and her husband 
Phil (Prairie View, KS), Margaret Houtz (née Mindrup) and her husband 
Brett (Ozawkie, KS), and Joseph Mindrup and his wife Meg (Hays, KS); 
sixteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. 
 The family would like to thank all the relatives and friends who 
visited Barbara over the years and included her in their holiday and 
family celebrations while she was living at the Prairie Senior Living 
Complex. They would also like to thank everyone at Prairie Senior Living
 Complex for their wonderful care of Barbara and for always treating her
 with kindness, compassion and respect.
