HAYS., Kan. - No. 22 Fort Hays State split Sunday's doubleheader with UC-Colorado Springs at Larks Park, taking the first game behind a masterclass from ace Ty Riley&nbsp;before dropping the finale in the second game. Riley struck out a career-high 16 in a complete-game win to open the day, while Trey DeGarmo'<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/trey-degarmo/8419">s</a>&nbsp;early two-run homer provided the spark in the second game.

Game 1:&nbsp;Fort Hays State 6, UC-Colorado Spring 3 Fort Hays State used a dominant pitching performance from ace&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/ty-riley/8431">Ty Riley</a>&nbsp;and a clutch four-run sixth inning to defeat UC-Colorado Springs 6-3 in the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader at Larks Park.

Riley (7-1) was electric on the mound, striking out a career-high 16 batters while allowing just three runs on six hits across a complete seven-inning effort. His strikeout count of 79 is already more than last season and is tied for sixth most in a season by any Tiger.

After three scoreless frames, the Tigers broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Tony Moore&nbsp;led off with a single and later scored on a Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;fielder's choice. Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;added an RBI single to make it 2-0, scoring Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;from third.

UC-Colorado Springs briefly surged ahead in the top of the fifth. Bryce Peterson drove in a run with a single before Kit Wigington launched a two-run homer to put the Mountain Lions up 3-2.

Fort Hays State wasted little time responding. In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers took advantage of defensive miscues and timely hitting. Moore&nbsp;opened the frame with a single before DeGarmo&nbsp;reached on a bunt and a throwing error by the pitcher, putting two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch from reliever Joe Plise allowed Moore to race home and tie the game at 3-3, while DeGarmo and Woolwine, who had walked, moved up a base.

Herrmann&nbsp;was intentionally walked to load the bases. Luis Ayala&nbsp;then hit a grounder that resulted in a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing DeGarmo to score and give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. Copper Howell&nbsp;followed with another grounder, and this time a throwing error by the third baseman let another run score to make it 5-3. Isaiah Ural, pllaying for the first time in over a month dud to a hand injury,&nbsp;capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Herrmann for the final run of the inning and extending the Tigers' lead to 6-3.

Moore&nbsp;led the Tiger offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Ayala finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Herrmann walked and singled to drive in a run.

Game 2:&nbsp;Fort Hays State 2, UC-Colorado Spring 8 Fort Hays State was unable to complete the two game sweep in the doubleheader, as visiting UC-Colorado Springs turned the tables in Game 2 with an 8-2 victory at Larks Park.

After a strong showing in the opener, the Tigers couldn't keep the momentum going, as the Mountain Lions plated eight unanswered runs after falling behind 2-0 in the first inning.

Trey DeGarmo&nbsp;continued his big day for the Tigers with a two-run homer in the first, his 11th of the season, giving FHSU an early edge. However, UCCS responded with four runs in the third inning and added three more in the fifth to break things open.

Ryder Mancuso earned the win for UCCS, tossing six innings of two-run ball with four strikeouts. Fort Hays starter Paul Panduro&nbsp;was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs in 2.2 innings.

Isaiah Ural&nbsp;and Cesar Saasvedra&nbsp;each tallied hits for the Tigers, who managed six hits. DeGarmo's home run accounted for both Tiger runs in the loss.

The Tigers return to conference action Wednesday against Emporia State. Fist pitch is set to be at 4:00 pm in Emporia, Kan.

Dads and daughters are heading to The Emerald Ball, where the yellow brick road ends in a night of celebration.

The Hays Recreation Commission will host the Wizard of Oz–themed event at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at the Hays Recreation Center, 1105 Canterbury Drive. Registration closes on Wednesday, April 9.

Gail Wickham, youth and senior program director, said the annual event has grown over 19 years and is on track for its largest turnout yet.

"This year, we are up to 82 couples. That's 150 dads and daughters who will be there that night," Wickham said.

The evening will feature a taco bar, photo booth, DJ-led dance, themed games and crafts across the center's gyms. One activity will lead participants through a scavenger hunt using clues to win magical prizes.

Registration is $20 per couple, with an additional $10 for each extra daughter. Wickham said they’ve already reached their initial capacity, but adjustments are being made to welcome more participants.

BUNKER HILL – Smoky Hills PBS is proud to announce a special production, "Remembering Bob Davis," dedicated to honoring the life and career of the legendary broadcaster Bob Davis.

For decades, Bob Davis was the voice behind some of the most iconic moments in Kansas sports history.&nbsp; He was a sportscaster&nbsp;for the Kansas Jayhawks, Fort Hays State University, and the Kansas City&nbsp;Royals.&nbsp;&nbsp;His passion, storytelling, and deep connection with fans made him a beloved figure in broadcasting.&nbsp;

This special program will reflect on the conversation we had with Davis back in 2021, as well as his induction speech into the 2016 Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Holy Family Elementary School notes, April 7-11, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) —Opponents of President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;and billionaire&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>&nbsp;rallied across the U.S. on Saturday to protest&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/projects/trump-campaign-promise-tracker/">the administration's actions</a>&nbsp;on government downsizing, the economy, human rights and other issues.

More than 1,200 “Hands Off!” demonstrations were planned by more than 150 groups, including civil rights organizations, labor unions, LBGTQ+ advocates, veterans and elections activists. The protest sites included the National Mall in Washington, D.C., state capitols and other locations in all 50 states.

Protesters assailed the Trump administration's moves to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-doge-veterans-64722f96984f1b730fea88278f6bc93f">fire thousands of federal workers</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/social-security-offices-closures-doge-trump-b2b1a5b2ba4fb968abc3379bf90715ff">close Social Security Administration field offices</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/usaid-federal-judge-trump-administration-bdc919a5d98eda5ab72a32fdfe2f147d">effectively shutter entire agencies</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-deportations-el-salvador-justice-contempt-6085e64a04b5d6455f368175af83e724">deport immigrants</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/transgender-visibility-trump-orders-2f949cdab2673e3becdfc3d213158aa9">scale back protections for transgender people</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-covid-federal-money-lawsuit-restraining-order-hhs-4d534b9f04389161f71e3bc541e87d7a">cut federal funding for health programs</a>.

Musk, a Trump adviser who owns Tesla, SpaceX and the social media platform X, has played a key role in government downsizing as the head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency. He says he is saving taxpayers billions of dollars.

Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign advocacy group, spoke at the Washington protest, criticizing the Trump administration's treatment of the LBGTQ+ community.

“The attacks that we’re seeing, they’re not just political. They are personal, y’all,” she said. “They’re trying to ban our books, they’re slashing HIV prevention funding, they’re criminalizing our doctors, our teachers, our families and our lives. This is Donald Trump’s America and I don’t want it y’all. We don’t want this America, y’all. We want the America we deserve, where dignity, safety and freedom belong not to some of us, but to all of us.”

Thousands of people marched in New York City's midtown Manhattan. In Massachusetts thousands more gathered on Boston Common holding signs including “Hands off our democracy,” “Hands off our Social Security” and “Diversity equity inclusion makes America strong. Hands off!”

In Ohio, hundreds rallied in the rain at the Statehouse in Columbus.

Roger Broom, 66, a retiree from Delaware County, Ohio, said at the Columbus rally that he used to be a Reagan Republican but has been turned off by Trump.

“He’s tearing this country apart,” Broom said. “It’s just an administration of grievances.”

Hundreds of people also demonstrated in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, a few miles from Trump's golf course in Jupiter, where he spent the morning at the club's Senior Club Championship. People lined both sides of PGA Drive, encouraging cars to honk and chanting slogans against Trump.

Archer Moran from Port St. Lucie, Florida, said, “They need to keep their hands off of our Social Security."

“The list of what they need to keep their hands off of is too long,” Moran said. “And it's amazing how soon these protests are happening since he’s taken office.”

The president plans to go golfing again Sunday, according to the White House.

Asked about the protests, the White House said in a statement that “President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”

In Charlotte, North Carolina, protesters said they were supporting a variety of causes, from Social Security and education to immigration and women's reproductive rights.

“Regardless of your party, regardless of who you voted for, what’s going on today, what’s happening today is abhorrent,” said Britt Castillo, 35, of Charlotte. "It’s disgusting and as broken as our current system might be, the way that the current administration is going about trying to fix things — it is not the way to do it. They’re not listening to the people."

“All they’re doing is making sure that they have a parachute for them and their rich friends, and everybody else here that lives here — that makes the gears turn for this country — are just screwed at the end of the day,” she said.

Amos Morgan, age 73, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away on March 23, 2025, leaving
behind a lifetime of laughter, adventure, and cherished memories. Born on
August 24, 1951, in San Diego, California, to Richard and Loretta Morgan,
Richard lived a life filled with passion, humor, and love.


A proud graduate of Norton High School’s Class of 1969, Richard later pursued
his degree in Computer Information Systems at NCK. His sharp mind and
dedication led him through a fulfilling career, most notably at Murfin Drilling
and later Midwest Energy, where he worked as a System Controller before
retiring after 26 years of service.

Richard’s zest for life was infectious. He was a man who spoke his mind with
refreshing honesty, always ready with a quick-witted joke and a mischievous
grin. He found joy in the open road, riding his Harley Davidson with the wind
at his back, and in the quiet moments spent fishing or scouting the perfect
hunting spot. More than anything, he treasured time with family and friends,
filling every gathering with laughter and stories.

Richard was an active member of several organizations that reflected his
passions. He was a member of HOG (Harley Owners Group), and a member of ABATE,
working to secure safety for all motorcyclists on Kansas' roads. His love for
the outdoors was evident in his dedication as a Life Member of the North
American Hunting Club.

Beyond his love for the road and the outdoors, Richard had a deep care for
children in need, demonstrated by his years of involvement with Toys for Tots.
He proudly collected patches from different years of participation, a testament
to his commitment to ensuring kids who had little would have something to smile
about during the holidays. He also anonymously donated to children’s school
lunch funds in Ellis, ensuring that those in need could have access to a warm
meal. His generous spirit and selflessness will be remembered by all who knew
him.


He leaves behind a family who adored him and will forever carry his spirit in
their hearts. Richard is survived by his sons, David and Scott Morgan, both of
Ellis; his daughters, Angela Trapp (Charley) of Manhattan, Amy Huxman (Jeremy)
of Hays, and Sase Fleenor (Michael) of Hays; and his sister, Renee Morgan of
Hays. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Morgan Trapp, Lindy
Callahan, Emma Leuthold, Zipora Morgan, Akira Morgan, Leah Dreher, Noah Huxman,
Lyndon Huxman, Jaxon Fleenor, Roqua Fleenor, Caden Huff, Carson Jones, Holden
Lyman, and Bryson Lyman, as well as his 14 great-grandchildren. Richard also
found love and companionship with his life partner, Donna Huff of Ellis, and
embraced her children, Heather Lang, Julie Huff, and Raina Huff, as part of his
extended family.


He now joins those who went before him, including his parents, Richard and
Loretta Morgan, his brother, Robert Morgan; his sister, Rhonda Brown; and his
beloved grandson, Clinton Alexander.


Family and friends are invited to share memories during a family visitation
from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, April 11, 2025, at Keithley Funeral Chapel,
400 E. 17th Street, Ellis, KS 67637. Richard’s life will be honored and
celebrated with a memorial service at 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 12, 2025, also
at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis.


In honor of Richard’s love for the open road, fellow motorcycle riders are
encouraged to ride their bikes to the service as a tribute to his adventurous
spirit. 


Memorial contributions may be made to the Ram7 Lunch Program, a cause close to
the family’s heart that helps provide lunch money for children in need.
Donations can be sent in care of the funeral home.


After the memorial service, it's time to celebrate Richard’s life the way he
lived it—fun and full of good times! Join us at the VFW, 813 Jefferson Street,
Ellis, KS, from 6:00 PM-10 PM. Expect music, dancing, a keg, plenty of food,
and lots of storytelling. Bring your best memories to share! It’s a chance to
honor Richard’s adventurous, wild, and unforgettable spirit the way he’d want

Jessica Luck comes from a long line of educators.

Luck's grandfather was a classroom teacher and a principal in Oberlin, where she grew up. Her two uncles taught school in western Kansas. A great-aunt taught in Atwood. Her dad was an art teacher, and some of her cousins are also teachers.

Fourteen years ago, when her family moved to Hays, she decided to switch gears from being an elementary school teacher to an in-home child care provider.

Luck, 48, earned her bachelor's degree at Fort Hays State University and taught second grade in Goddard before her family moved back to Hays in 2008 to be closer to their parents so their son, who was then 2, could get to know his grandparents.

Luck was going to go back to teaching elementary school, but she learned she was pregnant with twins. She and her husband didn't think it was financially prudent to try to have three children in child care.

After two years of staying home with her own children, the couple had a friend who needed child care. Luck and her husband decided to fully certify as an in-home child care provider.

Luck was nominated as the March Child Care Champion by mother Jessica Roe.

"We have had Jessica as our day care provider for nine years. She gives so much love to all the children in her care," Roe said. "Jessica does fun activities with the kids on a daily basis. 

"My older children still love going to see Jessica even though they are out of day care. Jessica will always give extra snuggles when my little one is having a rough day."

Although her oldest son is now 19, the twins are almost 16 and her youngest is 12, Luck has continued to operate her in-home child care.

She said all four children are baby whisperers and are great help when the child care children are in the house.

She said she always went to great lengths to give her children their own space. Her four had their own rooms and their own toys, separate from the child care.

Luck said she continues to love working with small children.

"Everything is brand new and exciting," she said. "Every stage that I see in a home day care before they go to school is fun and exciting. It's not the same thing every day.&nbsp;

"We have our routine, but just their little outlooks on life and how they perceive things are constantly changing."

Luck said she missed the classroom at first and struggled with taking on new roles, but she doesn't regret it.

"Being home was the best thing for the kids and our family at that time," she said.&nbsp;

She said she would not trade that time she had with her children for anything.&nbsp;

"I think if we had stayed in Wichita and I would still have taught, I don't think I would have stayed home with them. I don't think I would have realized the impact and how important that was to stay home with your own kids.

"That was my feeling. It's completely fine if parents work and don't stay home with their kids, but for me, I loved it, because I had that education background. I worked a lot with my kids, and it carried over to my day care."

Luck does not follow a preschool curriculum but uses resources from her classroom days. She has a structured day for the children with opportunities to play outside or exercise indoors when the weather is bad.

She allows the children to create open-ended art and craft projects that allow them to express their creativity.&nbsp;

Her kitchen table shows the wear from all of that creative time. The finish is completely worn off from all the years of art, play and scrubbing.

Luck said keeping up with the ever-changing child care regulations can be difficult.

"Your yearly inspections are a little nerve-racking," she said, "because it's like showing your home. You have to keep it, you think, neat and tidy, not like little people are in your home all of the time."

Luck advised new providers to give the job a year or two. She said it takes time to adjust to working within the state regulations and with parents to meet their expectations.

She said she has been thankful for her job as a child care provider because it has allowed her to meet more families in the community.

"When your kids are certain ages, those are the groups of parents and kids you know," she said. "Home day care allows you the opportunity to keep meeting families."

She said her child care families have become an extended part of her own family.

"You are a second parent almost to them. ... It's rewarding all down through the years like teaching. My oldest ones are eighth-graders this year, and they're going into high school. It's such a blessing to see from day one up into growing up, how they change, where the world takes them and the opportunities they have.

"I still look at them and see their little selves."

Dogs will get a head start on Easter this year with a fun-filled egg hunt packed with treats just for them.

The Hays Recreation Commission is hosting the Doggie Day Egg Hunt at 1 p.m. April 13 at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex. Registration closes on April 9 and is $1.

Gail Wickham, youth and senior program director, said the sixth-annual event was inspired by her love of dogs and a desire to create something fun for fellow pet owners in the community.

"This is their day. We zero in on the dogs and let them have their day and fun of an Easter egg hunt," Wickham said.

The event was designed as a springtime social outing for dogs of all breeds and their owners. Dogs sniff out eggs filled with treats, and each participant receives a treat bag and a photo opportunity.

Although registration is encouraged to help with planning, walk-ins are welcome. However, dogs must be vaccinated, and leashes are recommended unless the dog can be reliably controlled off-leash.

Wickham highlighted several benefits of the egg hunt, including the chance for dogs and their owners to bond and connect with fellow participants.

"Just enjoy being with your animal and doing something fun with them, rather than leaving them at home in the backyard, but actually participating and doing something fun with your pet," she said.

Lace up for the Race to Restock, a community run raising funds to fight poverty and provide local residents with essential resources.

Hosted by First Call for Help of Ellis County, the fundraiser supports one of&nbsp; Hays' food pantries and awards participants for their efforts.

Macey Pfeifer, executive director of First Call for Help, said the funds will assist about 70 households facing food insecurity.

"We have five students that we're working with. ... We decided that our biggest need right now is to raise money for our food pantry," she said.

The April 26 event is a joint effort between First Call for Help and students in a Leadership 310 class who are gaining practical, hands-on experience.

The race includes a 5K run for $25, a 10K run for $30, and a 1-mile walk for $20. All start at 8 a.m. at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, with check-in beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Participants who register by April 11 will receive a finisher’s medal. Same-day registration is available, though medals are not guaranteed for those who sign up after the deadline.

DODGE CITY – The Hays High baseball team raced out to an
early lead and beat Dodge City 10-0 Saturday. The Indians are now 3-1 overall
and 2-0 in Western Athletic Conference play.

The Indians wasted no time getting on the board. Cooper Johnson
singled with one out and scored on a Carter Graham sacrifice fly in the top of
the first. They would add three more runs in the second. Ian McGuire walked,
stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch then stole home to push the lead
to 2-0. Graham tripled which scored Jonathan Cano. Brett Rhoades added a double
which scored Graham. Trace Jacobs followed with a single which scored Rhoades
which pushed the lead to 5-0.

Johnson added an RBI single in the fourth and Jalen Smith an
RBI double in the fifth to push the lead to 7-0.

HHS added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Landon Hardman drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice. The last two runs
scored on bases loaded walks to Graham and Rhoades.

⚽ HHS girls fall in final game in McPherson Invitational

Father William J. Surmeier was born in Hays, Kansas on
January 7, 1940, the second son of Anton and Gertrude (Fellhoelter) Surmeier
and passed away on April 3, 2025. 

He attended St. Paul’s Catholic School in Angelus, Kansas,
Thomas County Grade School in Oakley, and St. Francis High School Seminary in
Victoria. He attended college and theology at Conception Seminary, Conception,
Missouri, and was ordained a priest for the Salina Diocese on May 27, 1965 in
his home parish in Oakley.&nbsp; Fr. Bill took
a year-long sabbatical and earned a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling at
Loyola University, Columbia, Maryland. He earned his Doctorate in Psychology
from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana.

He served as an associate pastor in the Sacred Heart
Cathedral Parish, Salina, from ‘65-‘67, St. Xavier’s Parish, Junction City,
‘67-‘69, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Hays, ‘69-‘72, Sacred Heart and St. Michael
Parishes in Greenleaf/Kimeo ’71, and Team Ministry ‘72-‘82 at Selden, Oberlin,
Logan, Leoville, New Almelo and Densmore. He was pastor of St. Mary Queen of
the Universe Parish, Salina, ‘82-91, St. Nicholas of Myra, Hays, ‘93-2005,
Sacred Heart and St. Thomas, Plainville and Stockton. 2005-‘08, and St. Mary Parish,
Gorham, 2008-‘14.&nbsp;

Fr. Bill served as Priest Council president for many terms
during the 1970s and ‘80s under Bishops Cyril Vogel, Daniel Kucera, and George
Fitzsimons. Fr. Bill was known for his dedication to the youth of our diocese.&nbsp; He was CYO Director from 1969 to 1984 under
Bishop Vogel, developing a strong youth ministry and the first Youth Council
for our diocese.

One of Fr. Bill’s passions was empowering Lay Ministry in
our diocese, and with the aid of the Parish Pastoral Council at St. Nick's, he
was the first to hire a Pastoral Administrator, Arvilla Jueneman, for St.
Nicholas of Myra Parish.&nbsp;

His vocation also led him to full-time counseling for
Catholic Charities in Hays from 1993 to 2014 until he retired.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Gertrude,
two sisters, Clara Zimmerman and Theresa Surmeier, and one brother, Alvin
Surmeier.

He is survived by two brothers, Tony Surmeier of Colby and
Henry Surmeier of Springfield Oregon, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and
brother priests.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday,
April 9, 2025 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church with Bishop Gerald Vincke
officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be at 3:00 pm
in St. Joseph Cemetery in Oakley.&nbsp;
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday at the
church.&nbsp; A parish vigil service and
rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the church.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to Salina Diocese in
care of Youth Ministry.&nbsp; Services are in
the care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, and condolences and memories of

 </figure>Father William J. Surmeier was born in Hays, Kansas on
January 7, 1940, the second son of Anton and Gertrude (Fellhoelter) Surmeier
and passed away on April 3, 2025. He attended St. Paul’s Catholic School in Angelus, Kansas,
Thomas County Grade School in Oakley, and St. Francis High School Seminary in
Victoria. He attended college and theology at Conception Seminary, Conception,
Missouri, and was ordained a priest for the Salina Diocese on May 27, 1965 in
his home parish in Oakley.&nbsp; Fr. Bill took
a year-long sabbatical and earned a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling at
Loyola University, Columbia, Maryland. He earned his Doctorate in Psychology
from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana.He served as an associate pastor in the Sacred Heart
Cathedral Parish, Salina, from ‘65-‘67, St. Xavier’s Parish, Junction City,
‘67-‘69, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Hays, ‘69-‘72, Sacred Heart and St. Michael
Parishes in Greenleaf/Kimeo ’71, and Team Ministry ‘72-‘82 at Selden, Oberlin,
Logan, Leoville, New Almelo and Densmore. He was pastor of St. Mary Queen of
the Universe Parish, Salina, ‘82-91, St. Nicholas of Myra, Hays, ‘93-2005,
Sacred Heart and St. Thomas, Plainville and Stockton. 2005-‘08, and St. Mary Parish,
Gorham, 2008-‘14.&nbsp;Fr. Bill served as Priest Council president for many terms
during the 1970s and ‘80s under Bishops Cyril Vogel, Daniel Kucera, and George
