HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs extended their unbeaten
streak to six games Tuesday, knocking off the Colby Eagles in a pair of games
in Hays.

GAME 1: TMP 3, Colby 2 In the first game of the doubleheader, TMP starter Ty Schmeidler
allowed just two runs in four-plus innings as the Monarchs held off the Eagles
in a 3-2 victory.

After a scoreless top half of the first inning for
Schmeidler, the TMP offense scratched a run across in the bottom of the inning.

Jacob Seib led off the inning with a double, and Ian Nehls
drove him home on an RBI single. Putting TMP 1-0.

Colby tied the game with a solo homer in the top of the
third inning.

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the third, Seib
led off the inning with a triple. Nehls walked, and then Schmeidler was hit by
a pitch to lead the bases. 

Caden Dinkel delivered an RBI single to center, putting TMP
up 2-1. Later in the inning, Grant Nehls drove in a run with a sacrifice fly,
putting TMP up 3-1.

The Eagles add a run in the fourth on an error, but after
that, Schmeidler and fellow pitcher Grant Nehls shut the Eagles down and secured
the 3-2 TMP victory.

Schmeidler picked up the win. He allowed just two runs, one earned
with three walks and six strikeouts.

Nehls earned the save with two and a third innings of perfect
relief.

Jacob Seib was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. 

GAME 2: TMP 15, Colby 1 Six Monarchs recorded a multi-hit game in the day's second
game, and five had at least TMP RBIs in a 15-1 run-rule victory.

Adler Browns two-run single in the top of the first inning helped
the Monarchs jump out to an early lead.

The Eagle cut into the TMP lead in the second, making it 2-1
TMP.

TMP’s offense came to life in the bottom of the third
inning, scoring four times and extending their lead to 6-1.

Ty Schmeidler got the scoring started in the bottom of the
third, driving in Ian Nehls on an RBI single for a 3-1 lead.

Grant Nehls singled home a second run in the inning for a
4-1 lead. They then added a run on a wild pitch, and Trevor Fabrizius drove in
a run on a sacrifice fly.

Leading 6-1, the Monarchs' offense exploded for nine runs in
the fourth inning on their way to a 15-1 victory.

After three straight singles to open the inning, including back-to-back
run-scoring singles by Ian Nehls and Schmeidler, Caden Dinkel hit a two-run
home run to left, putting the Monarchs up 10-1.

TMP’s Easton Werth drove in two runs with a groundball, making
it 12-1. 

Seib and Ian Nehls delivered again with back-to-back RBI singles,
making it 14-1 TMP. 

Scheidler reached on an error that resulted in another TMP
run scoring for a 15-1 lead. 

TMP’s Carson Liles made his season debut in the top of the
fifth as he makes his way back from injury.

He gave up one hit with two strikeouts in four shutout
innings.

Caden Dinkel was three-for-four with a two-run home run and a run scored. He has six straight multi-hit games to open the season.&nbsp;

⚾ Monarchs move to 6-0 with win over Colby

HAYS
– The TMP-Marian softball team moved to 6-0 to start the season with a
doubleheader sweep of Colby. Hannah Rose has four hits and Brooke Koeningsman
drove in four runs in an 14-4 win in game one. Paige Koeningsman has four RBIs as
the Monarchs took the second contest 8-4.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 14, Colby 4 (5 inn.)
 The Monarchs scored seven in the first inning and never looked back. The Monarchs
opened the frame with back-to-back doubles from Brynn Rebel and Hannah Rose to
take the 1-0 lead. The next six runs all came with two outs. Brynn Schoepf, Addison Watson both had RBI singles. Teagan Gottschalk had a two-run single and Raegan Allen
a two-run homer.

TMP
would add two runs in the second on an RBI double from Brooke Koeningsman and Bria
Windholz single. Koeningsman added a three-run homer in the third. The Monarchs
closed out the scoring with two more runs in the fourth on a Molly Helget fielder’s
choice and an error.

Rebel
allowed three earned runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts and
picked up the win.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 8, Colby 4
 The Monarchs scored two in the first only to see the Eagles answer with three
in the top of the second. The game was tied 4-4 when TMP struck for four in the
bottom of the sixth.

Brynn
Rebel doubled with one out and scored what turned out to be the winning run on a
bunt single off the bat of Hannah Rose. Brooke Koeningsman followed with an RBI
double to push the lead to 6-4. With two outs Paige Keoningsman added a two-run
homer.

Rebel
pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief in picked up the win. Starter Bria Windholz
allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks over 4 2/3
innings.

with a convincing 15-0 win over Dodge City Tuesday at Legends Field. The Indians
(5-0, 1-0 WAC) struck early with five in the top of the first then added two in
the second and three in the third in the game which was called after three
innings by run-rule.

Riley
Dreher had three of the Indians 13 hits and drove in three runs. Brynlee Rupp,
Brooklynn Dinkel and Avery Solida all added two hits. Brynlee Brous and Solida
both drove in two runs.

Dreher
(4-0) allowed one hit with two strikeouts and no walks and picked up the win in
the circle.

MAYETTA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Golf placed 16th&nbsp;as a team at the Firekeeper Open, held at the par-72 Firekeeper Golf Course. The Tigers improved as a team in each round, shooting scores of 310, 301, and 298.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/jordan-mccaslin/8552">Jordan McCaslin</a>, playing as an individual, had the top performance of the six Tiger golfers competing in the tournament by finishing at 7-over par overall.

McCaslin placed 29th&nbsp;individually, having the same pattern of improvement as the Tiger team. He shot 5-over par in the first round, 2-over in the second round, and then shot even par in the final round. He had five birdies and two eagles throughout the tournament. In the final round, he was 3-over through five holes but had an eagle, par, birdie stretch to get his round back to even. He closed out his tournament with 10-straight pars.

MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. – The Fort Hays State women's golf team finished 19th at the Spring Regional Preview, held Monday (April 7) and Tuesday (April 8) at Shangri-La Golf Club &amp; Resort in Monkey Island, Okla. The course played as a par-72 and spanned 5,813 yards.

The Tigers opened the event with a 343 in round one, then improved by a stroke on day two, posting a 342 for a two-round total of 685.

The team will take a week off as they prepare themselves for the MIAA Championships at the Meadowlark Hills Golf Course in Kearney, Neb. Tournament is set for Sunday (April 13) to Tuesday (April 15).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The City of Hays is notifying residents of delays in generating monthly water bills due to a technical issue impacting a third-party data service provider.

The issue, which originated outside city control, has temporarily affected the city's internal billing processes.

According to Director of Finance Kim Rupp, the city was first notified of the issue by their external service provider last week.

The vendor handles data services critical to the city's ability to create and distribute monthly water billing statements.

“The problem arose unexpectedly with our vendor’s internal systems, which has prevented us from generating water bills on schedule this month,” Rupp said. “We’re in continuous communication with the vendor, and they've assured us they are working urgently toward a solution.”

City officials emphasized that while they expect a resolution soon, no exact timeline can currently be guaranteed.

The vendor continues efforts to rectify the technical malfunction and has indicated significant progress, but the precise completion date remains uncertain.

“Unfortunately, the nature of this issue means our hands are tied until our vendor completes their repairs,” Rupp said. “We appreciate our residents’ patience and understanding as we work through this unexpected situation.”

Residents may have already noticed their water bills did not arrive at their usual time this month.

The city typically sends out billing statements regularly throughout the month, and the current delay has impacted a significant number of accounts.

Rupp noted that while new bills cannot currently be generated or paid, residents who previously received their bills can still make payments using regular methods, including online, mail, or in-person options.

“The issue does not affect bills already sent out prior to this issue,” Rupp said. “If you have an existing bill, please continue to pay that bill normally.”

The City Clerk’s Office and Finance Department will resume processing and mailing of new water bills immediately upon restoration of the vendor’s services.

Once residents receive their delayed billing statements, they can pay using the standard payment methods without additional steps required.

City officials expressed regret for any inconvenience this issue may cause and remain committed to keeping residents informed of any updates regarding the timeline and resolution.

“We sincerely apologize to our residents for this disruption in our normal billing processes,” Rupp said. “This issue highlights our reliance on certain external providers and the impact these unforeseen events can have. We remain committed to providing timely information as we receive updates from the vendor.”

⚾ Tigers drop a spot in latest ABCA national poll

 Brothers John and Nate Egan remember all too well what it was like to be students with big dreams. As recent Fort Hays State University graduates, the brothers say FHSU had a profound impact on them. So much so that the 26 and 22-year-old brothers have already created a scholarship for students like them, chasing the same early success they’ve had since graduating.

Now based in Missouri, John is a marketing representative in the commercial and life insurance field. He loves every minute of interacting with customers and helping them meet their individual needs. He landed the job through one of his peers at Fort Hays State. The experiences he gained at FHSU and time spent in the Finance Club with his brother, Nate, inspired him to take the leap into creating a scholarship to help others with the same interests.

“We felt very blessed that we were able to graduate with no debt due to scholarship support,” John said. “We were both able to land good jobs thanks to our education at FHSU, and we decided to give back because we wouldn’t be here without Fort Hays State.”

Hearing John’s decision to start a scholarship encouraged Nate to join him. Nate was incredibly involved on campus, participating in Alpha Kappa Psi, Economics Club, Finance Club, Catholic Disciples, and as a Robbins College Ambassador with John. 

Culminating in his position as a financial analyst in Chicago, Nate felt the same gratitude as John for the opportunities at Fort Hays State University that led him to where he is today.

“The conversations I had with my professors about how to prepare for the adult world allowed me to hop in and succeed right away,” Nate said.

Each year, the brothers hope to make an even bigger contribution to help as many students as possible. The Egans’ story is only one example of how giving back can transform lives at Fort Hays State.

Get ready for a splash of color, as paintball may be the next big thrill in Ellis County.

Imagine Ellis County hosted its first Think-Tank Throwdown Thursday in downtown Hays to explore opportunities to improve the county.

Ellis County residents pitched their ideas to a panel of judges for a chance to bring their visions to life. Leigh Purdy earned first place and secured a contract with Imagine Ellis County to carry out her project in memory of a former classmate.

"Hays is famous for disc golf. Let's make it famous for paintball, too," Purdy said.

Purdy proposed the Cody Joseph Younger Memorial Paintball Park. Similar to a skate park, it would be a free, bring-your-own-gear facility to provide local youth and families with safe and exciting outdoor recreation.

Preliminary location ideas for the 0.5 to 1-acre facility included Elizabeth Polly Park and Daniel G. Rupp Memorial Park in Hays. However, Purdy said she is open to placing it in other Ellis County communities.

The youth and activity center would promote teamwork, strategy and physical activity through paintball games like capture the flag, team deathmatch, king of the hill and battle royale.

Purdy said the facility could also offer options for airsoft, laser tag and Nerf guns.

"This would encourage teamwork and strategy," she said.

Purdy detailed the costs and materials in her presentation, saying the project would stay within a $2,500 to $5,000 budget. She hopes to secure donated materials as well.

Materials include plastic culverts, rain barrels, wooden spools, sandbags, tires and concrete barriers.

Purdy said the Hays Park Department could provide maintenance assistance, with volunteers and local service clubs also participating.

Purdy said there is a regional demand for this type of youth entertainment, which has the potential to engage local businesses and boost tourism.

With the nearest paintball park 90 miles away in Assaria, Purdy said there's a regional demand for this type of youth entertainment. She highlighted the potential to generate local business engagement and boost tourism.

"I love the opportunity to honor my late friend and bring something really cool to Ellis County. Thank you for allowing us this opportunity," she said.

Anthony Hurla proposed a nonprofit recreational facility focusing on a paintball course. The long-term vision is to expand into a full-scale activity center featuring go-karts, laser tag, roller hockey and rock climbing.

Hurla's plan is to start with a low-impact paintball park, which he described as the most cost-effective option for kids and adults,  offering an affordable, accessible and alcohol-free environment.

According to James Robben, Grow Hays' director of business development and special projects, Hurla and Purdy will work together due to their similar ideas.

Hurla’s proposal also suggested using profits to support road repairs, building improvements and other needs in Ellis County. He placed second in the competition.

Other ideas presented at the Think-Tank Throwdown included a vending ice machine at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex, an organic greenhouse and affordable tiny homes to help address the housing shortage.

The remaining participants will be connected with community members who can help develop their projects. Grow Hays intern Elizabeth Noble led the Think-Tank Throwdown, which was judged by a panel of three.

Imagine Ellis County awards contract for paintball facility

A classic case of good versus evil is coming to the FHSU campus this month.

"Jekyll &amp; Hyde," the 1990 musical based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella, will run April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in FHSU’s Felten-Start Theatre. The cast of 22 actors/singers and 18 orchestra pit members has been rehearsing since early February.

“It is a complex show, but fun with great music,” said Dr. Terry Crull, professor of music and director of Jekyll &amp; Hyde. “The music is the highlight of the show.”

The storyline of Jekyll &amp; Hyde will be familiar to film, literature, and theatre buffs. 

It follows the unfortunate life choices of Dr. Henry Jekyll, who wishes to develop a formula to cure his comatose father. Jekyll’s proposal to use a human subject (his father) to research the formula is rejected by his hospital’s board of directors.

After testing the formula on himself, Jekyll undergoes a painful transformation into Mr. Hyde, a sinister, violent man. The show contains some mature content and is recommended for ages 13 plus.

Much of the music will be familiar to those who enjoy musical theatre. Songs such as “This is the Moment,” “Someone Like You,” and “Once Upon a Dream” are just a few examples.

The show poses many new production challenges for Carl Sage, assistant professor of theatre, who is tasked with making the story come to life through his set design.

 It will be the first time a projection system will be used to create large background scenes. The projection system eliminates the need for big flats that drop onto the stage.

“Whatever you do on stage must be conducive to storytelling,” Sage said. “It can be a challenge, especially for some of the more skill-heavy situations, like programming the light board, which can take hours or days to program. It’s a process. You can’t make things happen instantly.”

Crull said he is anxious to see how the sets come together. “It will be very exciting,” he said.

Main cast members include Garrett Cole, Hays, as Jekyll and Hyde; Allie Straub, Hays, as Lucy Harris; McKynlee Stecklein, Hays, as Emma Carew, Jekyll’s fiancée; and Quinton McGuire, Hays, as John Utterson, Jekyll’s friend and confidant.

FHSU’s Department of Music &amp; Theatre will round out the season’s offerings with the following events:

Classic good vs. evil coming to FHSU April 11-13

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball fell in a pair of conference games to No. 11 ranked Rogers State on Monday. The Hillcats won by scores of 12-5 and 13-3, improving to 30-11 overall and 12-8 in the MIAA, while the Tigers moved to 22-12 overall and 7-7 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Rogers State 12, Fort Hays State 5 A three-error third inning allowed the first four runs of the game to score for Rogers State after the teams played to a scoreless tie through the first couple innings. The Tigers faced an uphill battle from that point, but managed to get within two runs with a four-run sixth inning. However, Rogers State pulled back away with a six-run seventh and FHSU countered with just one run in the final inning.

The Hillcats built a 6-0 lead through five and a half innings. The Tigers finally broke through offensively with singles from Maddie Pierce and Regan Curry set up an RBI single by Lexi Mohr. Then Marisela Landa&nbsp;delivered a big blow with a pinch-hit 3-run home run, instantly cutting the score to 6-4. That chased Rogers State starting pitcher Harley Culie from the game, but Jade Sanders was able to do enough for a four-out save.

Morgan Schmidt pitched 5 innings in the game, allowing nine runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks. She struck out three and moved to 10-5 on the season with the loss. Korryn Johnson&nbsp;relieved for an inning and allowed a run, while Erika Flynn&nbsp;pitched 2/3 innings and allowed two runs. Kylie Casperson&nbsp;got the final out in the seventh. Pierce had a 3-hit game for the Tigers, while Curry had a pair of hits.

Culie finished with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work, moving to 14-4 overall on the season. Sanders allowed a run and picked up her second save of the season.

Game 2: Rogers State 13, Fort Hays State 3 (5 inn.) Both teams scored one run each in the first inning and played to the 1-1 tie through three innings. However, the Hillcat offense caught fire with two outs in the fourth. They plated a run to break the tie and then added five more runs with two outs. RSU had seven hits in the inning. They remained hot the following inning, plating six more runs on six hits. RSU finished with 18 hits in the game and 30 for the day.

Lilly Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;and Maddie Pierce&nbsp;had singles in the first to eventually set up an RBI groundout by Abbey Duerte. In the fifth, the Tigers got RBI singles from Kaydawn Haag&nbsp;and Jules Bosco. Haag led the Tigers with two hits in the game.

Savanah Egger&nbsp;pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for FHSU and had one strikeout. Korryn Johnson&nbsp;relieved for 2/3 innings and allowed two runs. Egger moved to 10-7 on the season. 🥎 Tigers fall twice to No. 11 Rogers State

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis is now 11-5 overall and 1-3 in the MIAA after a 6-1 loss to Emporia State on Monday (Apr. 7). The Hornets moved to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/irina-alfonso/8115">Irina Alfonso</a>&nbsp;picked up the only point for FHSU, winning her No. 2 singles match in three sets.

The Hornets swept doubles action to claim the first point of the match, then went on to take five of the six singles matches. All five of ESU's wins in singles were in straight sets, but the two Tigers forced tiebreaker scenarios within their singles-play setbacks. All five of ESU's wins in singles were in straight sets, but the two Tigers forced tiebreaker scenarios within their singles-play setbacks. John 'Johnny' Braun age 94, passed away April 5, 2025, at his home in Victoria,
Kansas.&nbsp; He was born August 1,1930, on the family farm west of Victoria,
the middle of nine children to Raymond P. and Agnes (Staab) Braun.&nbsp; On
November 20, 1954, he married Josephine (Josie) Riedel in Walker, KS.&nbsp;
They had seven children.

John was a carpenter, a builder, and a farmer.&nbsp; He worked for Levin Kuhn
House Moving, and Victoria Lumber Company for many years.&nbsp; He was a 1949
graduate of Victoria High School, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.&nbsp; He was
drafted into military service from 1951 to 1953 serving in the Korean
War.&nbsp; He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1953 serving as Grand Knight in
1992, became a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus in 1984 serving as
Faithful Navigator in 1990,&nbsp; was a lifetime VFW member, and serving on the
color guard for military funeral services.&nbsp; He was Post Commander from
2003-2005 and again from 2007-2009. John was a member of the Basilica of St
Fidelis and lead many a rosary in church and at wake services.&nbsp; He also
served on the USD 432 School Board and St. Fidelis Parish Council.

John is survived by his wife, Josie, of the home; his children, James Braun and
wife, Sandy, Brighton, CO; Janet Giersch and husband, Larry, Hays, KS; Joseph
Braun and Thom Jackson, Wamego, KS; Joan Rourke and husband Kevin, Russell, KS;

A&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 12,
2025. at the Basilica of Saint Fidelis, 900 Cathedral Ave., Victoria, Kansas
with celebrant, Father Curtis Carlson O.F.M. Cap.

Burial will follow in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas with military
honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post 1751.&nbsp; 

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary,
Victoria, then from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Friday, and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M.
Saturday, at The Basilica of Saint Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas, 

A Rosary with the 3rd &amp; 4th Degree Knights of
Columbus/V.F.W./Daughters of Isabella, will be at 6:45 P.M. Friday, followed
by a vigil service at The Basilica of Saint Fidelis.

The Hays USD 489 school board will consider purchasing furniture for the new high school building at its meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Rockwell Administration Center.

The board is asking to approve purchases not to exceed $1 million&nbsp;from Circadia.

The board will also be asked to approve the purchase of flat panel displays from KCAV for $127,812 for the new Hays High building.

The board will discuss school fees for the 2025-26 school year. The list of fees was not included in the public board packet.
