City: Delayed Hays utility bills now being sent

Kinley Doonan, a Fort Hays State University freshman, wanted to help others even if it meant flying far from her comfort zone. Her motivation is her Catholic upbringing.

"I've always wanted to go on a mission trip. I went to Catholic school my whole life. ... I thought it would be really cool to go help people, and when the opportunity came up, I just thought that I'd take it," Doonan said.

Through hands-on service and faith-centered outreach, the FHSU Comeau Catholic Campus Center left a lasting impression on the heart of Peru.

Lizzie Brisnehan is a first-year missionary with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), a nonprofit that shares the gospel with young adults nationwide through various initiatives.

"Our main mission as FOCUS missionaries is to know Jesus and share his message with others, specifically to teach college students how to do that," she said.

While many students spent spring break with family, 16 Catholic Tigers journeyed to the mountainous community of Pamplona on the outskirts of Lima, Peru’s capital, to serve those in need.

Alongside Fr. Father Andy Hammeke and other FOCUS missionaries, Brisnehan guided students on a life-changing journey that left a lasting impact on the people they served.

FHSU freshman Hadley Ohl joined the mission for her first international service experience, helping with road maintenance in an area marked by extreme poverty.

"[Their homes] were like shacks. No running water, no AC, and their bathrooms were just a toilet with no toilet paper," Ohl said. "It was very, very different from what I thought it was going to be like. Most places didn't have windows or roofs. Some of them were caved in."

"It was very much outdoors," Doonan said. "It was dusty because the mountains were just rock and dirt. ... The kids were dusty, and there was a decent amount of trash blowing around everywhere."

The students spent about five hours each day working with local men, learning how to mix concrete and build a retaining wall along the mountainside to keep falling rocks from damaging nearby homes.

While manual labor was a key part of the trip, connecting with the people of Lima was just as meaningful. Despite language barriers and early doubts about her spiritual impact, Doonan built strong relationships with local children and fellow students.

"There was this one girl who, on the first day, I really bonded with. She introduced me to her family, and she introduced me as her friend. It was really sweet," she said.

Although the students spent time preparing for their trip to Peru, Ohl said she still wasn’t fully ready for the conditions they would encounter.

"I feel like mentally I was not prepared to see how they lived in those conditions," Ohl said. "They were so happy just to see us. I feel like they were happier than some of us back here who have a lot."

Doonan said she was mentally and physically prepared for the week of work, but there were moments when she did not feel her efforts to help were genuinely making a difference.

"I thought it would feel like I was doing more the first day there, especially since I couldn't speak to them because of the language barrier. I felt like I couldn't give them anything," she said. "Through the Lord's grace, I was able to feel like I was giving them myself."

Though Doonan questioned her ability to make a difference, the experience ultimately deepened her faith, strengthened her gratitude and shifted how she envisions her future.

Ohl said the trip opened her eyes to how much she has and often takes for granted, especially compared to the daily struggles many in Peru face to meet basic needs.

She also said the experience brought her close to Jesus and deepened her spiritual connection.

"I feel so much closer to Jesus after the trip. I'm filled with joy whenever I think about him, go to Mass, go to adoration and say the Rosary. ... I feel like I should take advantage of those things because those people down there don't have that every day," Ohl said.

Brisnehan said the group helped fulfill spiritual needs in an area where access to formal religious services was limited or nonexistent.

"We brought Jesus in the eucharist up the mountain through this big procession, and then we had a makeshift chapel for people to pray in all day before bringing it back to the community," she said.

Brisnehan said the students formed stronger bonds with one another and have become more engaged in campus religious activities since returning.

Alongside their service work, the students spent a day on pilgrimage, exploring cultural and spiritual landmarks in Peru's capital.

The group toured a grand cathedral and monastery, viewing the remains of hundreds of Dominican priests and several saints, including St. Martin de Porres and&nbsp;St. Rose of Lima, the first saint from the Americas.

Ohl and Doonan encourage anyone considering a mission trip or service work to trust their inner calling and follow where it leads.

"I think God would not put that in your heart or mind if you weren't meant to do it," Ohl said.

"There was some sacrifice; I couldn't go home and see my family, but it was so worth it and I would do it again," Doonan said.

The Catholic Tigers partnered with Bridges, a Peru-based nonprofit, and longtime missionaries who have spent years serving the needy.

FHSU Catholic students bring service, faith to Peru

Ellis County Fair board members have been busy the last few months reaching out to old and potential new sponsors. Even with their efforts, fundraising has fallen short of their goal this year by $25,000.

The Ellis County Fair is one of the longest standing events in Ellis County starting back in the late 1800s. 

County fairs were a way to unite all the cities, towns, and villages to celebrate those that lived within the county lines. They also displayed their best harvest and crafts. 

The Ellis County Fair started in the now city limits of Hays, at one time the south end on Main Street. Land was donated to the county by the Schenk family and now sits on its current location.

The present Ellis County Fair provides entertainment to go along with all the entries so it will draw people to come view all the exhibits. The Ellis County 4-H club members work hard on not only their livestock exhibits, but other entries such as needlework, foods, arts and crafts, woodworking, and photography. They are judged on their entries teaching youth important life skills that will help them evolve into well-rounded adults.

While the fair has grandstand entertainment that requires a ticket for attendance, there are a number of family-orientated events that are offered free to the public, but still cost money to bring them in. Some of those are the petting zoo, live music on the midway, contests such as cornhole, hot dog eating contest, pie eating contest, kids’ games, Lego contest, wagon rides from Clydesdales, and a balloon artist, to name a few. 

The few fair board members also work on updating the fairgrounds every year to make it a nice facility. They have donated countless hours and personal equipment and supplies to make the fairgrounds a great attraction.

What we ask of the community is to support the fair. If you are able to donate to help, make this long-standing tradition continue operating and growing, it would be a great benefit to our community. There is no donation too big or small. We have a large number of businesses and individuals that have sponsored the county fair for countless years already, and for that we are grateful for their generosity to support this tradition.

FHSU raises $180,000 on 5th-annual Giving Day

Dr. Wally Walstrom, a sports medicine physician at HaysMed Orthopedic Institute, plays a pivotal role in the athletic community of western Kansas. Serving as the team doctor for Fort Hays State University, Dr. Walstrom oversees the health and well-being of the university's student athletes, who outnumber those at any other college in Kansas. His responsibilities extend to leading a team of 13 HaysMed athletic trainers from local high schools and FHSU, ensuring comprehensive care for athletes across the region.

Recently, Dr. Walstrom accepted the prestigious role of chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the Kansas State High School Athletic Association (KSHSAA). This committee is instrumental in shaping policies and recommendations for high school athletics in Kansas. Under Dr. Walstrom's leadership, the committee has tackled critical issues such as concussion protocols and over-training in youth sports.

Concussion protocols have become a focal point across all levels of sports, from professional leagues to youth athletics. Dr. Walstrom's committee is dedicated to updating the Return to Play guidelines, ensuring that athletes recover safely and effectively. The committee comprises a diverse group of professionals, including athletic trainers, physicians, administrators, coaches, school nurses, and clinical psychologists, all working together to enhance athlete safety.

Over-training in youth sports has gained attention in recent years due to the increasing number of injuries among young athletes. Dr. Walstrom's committee is addressing this issue by implementing new guidelines, which will be available in digital format in the spring and paper copies in the fall for all Kansas high schools. This initiative aims to provide accessible and practical resources to prevent over-training and promote healthy athletic development.

Another significant focus for Dr. Walstrom and his committee is the improvement of Pre-Participation Physical Examinations (PPEs), commonly known as sports physicals. Traditionally, these physicals are required to be completed between May 1st and the start of the school year in August, creating a time crunch for both providers and families. Dr. Walstrom is advocating for an extended timeframe to make the process more convenient and family-friendly while maintaining the highest standards of athlete safety.

Dr. Walstrom's contributions to sports medicine extend beyond his clinical duties. Doctor championing sports medicine at HaysMed, beyond

Hays Post Sports HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs extended their win streak to
10 straight to open the season Monday. They completed a doubleheader sweep of
the Ellis Railroaders in Hays, winning 10-0 and 14-4.

The Monarchs scored in four of five innings in a 10-0
run-rule victory in game one.

Following a scoreless first inning, the Monarchs pushed
across the game's first runs, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second
inning.

Grant Nehls scored the game’s first run when he scored on a
passed ball. 

Ian Nehls added a two-run single for a 3-0 TMP lead, and
then Jacob Seib scored on a passed ball, making it 4-0.

TMP loaded the bases to open the bottom of the third inning
before pushing for more run across in the inning.

The Monarchs' first run of the inning came on a wild pitch.
They added a second run on a Connor Breit RBI single. A third run scored on an
Austin Gilbert RBI single and the final run scored on a Ian Nehls RBI ground out
putting TMP up 8-0.

A Gilbert sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth gave TMP
a 9-0 lead.

In the fifth, Caden Dinkel singled home a run in the bottom
of the fifth leading TMP to the 10-0 run rule&nbsp;
victory.

Dinkel finished 3-for-4 and Ian Nehls drove in three runs.

Carson Liles earned the victory with four shutout innings.
He allowed just three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. 

GAME 2: TMP 14, Ellis 4 In the day's final game, the Monarchs scored in every inning
on their way to a 14-4 victory.

Ellis opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of
the first. 

The Monarchs answered with two runs in the bottom of the
first on a two-run Grant Nehls double.

The Railers tied the game with a single run in the top of
the second.

Ian Nehls put the Monarchs back on top, in the bottom of the
second, on a sacrifice fly to center field, making it 3-2.

A Connor Breit sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third,
putting TMP up 4-2.

The Monarchs broke free with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Ty Schmeidler and Caden Dinkel drove in two runs with
back-to-back RBI singles.

An Adler Brown two-run double makes it 8-2 TMP. TMP also
added a run on an error for a 9-2 through four innings.

TMP pushed two more runs across when Grant Nehls tripled and
scored on an error, putting TMP up 11-2.

After Ellis scored two runs in the top of the sixth, the
Monarchs took advantage of three walks, two errors, and a single in the bottom
of the sixth inning as they scored three runs, securing the 14-4 run-rule
victory.

Jacob Seib finished 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Grant Nehls finished 2-for-2 with four RBI's and 3 walks.

The Ellis County Commission will hear an informational session about infrastructure costs for new housing during its meeting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Reinvestment Housing Incentive Districts, a Kansas Department of Commerce program, have been used in nearby cities but could be used for the first time in rural Ellis County.

Dominic Eck of Gillmore &amp; Bell will provide an overview of the process if it were to proceed.

Darin Myers, county administrator,  will meet with commissioners to begin the 2026 budget process. Commissioners will be asked to provide direction on financial objectives, mill levy targets, staffing and project priorities.

Budget requests from departments and agencies are due in May.

Commissioners will also review the monthly reports submitted by various departments, such as calls for emergency services and on-scene time for incident responses.

Myers will discuss several reports, including those from Ellis County Communications, Environmental Services, EMS and the Sheriff's Office.&nbsp;

Ellis County Sheriff Scott Braun will ask commissioners to approve the use of about $800 from the Opioid Settlement Fund to cover the travel costs of a retired narcotics detective.

The detective will teach a class for local law enforcement on fentanyl and opioid overdose death investigations.

The county commission will consider approving 15 scholarship recipients for the upcoming fall semester. These scholarships assist local high school seniors planning to attend Fort Hays Tech North Central, Fort Hays State University or Hays Academy of Hair Design.

$10,000 has been set aside in the 2025 Ellis County budget for this project.

The commission will be asked to authorize the purchase of asphalt emulsion oils from Ergon Asphalt &amp; Emulsions to support the 2025 Asphalt Maintenance Plan.

The total cost of the materials is&nbsp;$882,837.

The Ellis County Joint Planning Commission chairman and the Environmental Services director will ask the commission to take action on a permit to authorize equipment sales, storage and rental on county property.

Myers will also discuss the potential sale of a brush truck to another governmental agency.

The 2024 County Engineer's annual report will summarize the previous year's projects and timesheets. It will then be submitted to KDOT for inclusion in the Kansas local infrastructure planning.

Ellis County Commission to hear report on housing incentives

Carl Frederick 'Fred' Goff, 74, passed away
peacefully on April 11, 2025, in the comfort of his home in WaKeeney, Kansas,
surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on March 8, 1951, in Hays,
Kansas, to Lyle and Bonnie (Thomas) Goff.

Fred grew up in the tight-knit communities of Bogue,
Stockton, and Ness City, where his character was shaped by small-town values,
hard work, and deep family roots. A proud graduate of Ness City High School, he
was a standout athlete, earning local fame for his skills on the football field
and basketball court. One of his proudest memories was helping lead his team to
the state championship game — a moment he often recalled with a glint of pride
and a warm smile.

On August 19, 1972, Fred married the love of his life,
Charlotte Louise Grecian, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in WaKeeney. Their
52-year journey together was one of deep devotion, unwavering partnership, and
shared laughter. Together, they built a life rich in family, faith, and
friendship.

Fred spent most of his working life in the oil fields of
western Kansas—a career that saw him take on many roles, from roughneck to tool
pusher, tester, and driller. Known for his strong work ethic and calm demeanor
under pressure, he made countless lifelong friendships along the way. When he
wasn’t working, Fred could be found tending to his family’s land in Bogue,
which he affectionately referred to as “hobby farming.” Despite the modesty in
his words, he took great pride in the soil and seasons.

A Harley enthusiast, Fred found joy in the open road,
especially on rides shared with friends and grandsons. His greatest joy,
though, came from his family. He was a devoted grandfather who rarely missed a
game, recital, or school event. With patience and wisdom, he was a gentle
teacher and a constant presence in the lives of his grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte Goff of
WaKeeney; children, Chane (Heidi) Goff of WaKeeney, Chandra Micek of Ransom,
and Carla Michelle (Gary) Wilson of WaKeeney; grandchildren, Michael (Leslie)
Goff, Blake Wilson, Allen (Olivia) Goff, Jayden (Dennis) Goff, William
(Madison) Wilson, Jory Micek, MaKaLa Wilson, Corbin Micek, Allie Micek, and
Xzavier Wilson; brother, Earl James (Jo) Goff; sister, Elaine O’Bleness;
sisters-in-law, Linda (Vic) Swatzell and Shirley Grecian; and many cherished
nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Bonnie
Goff.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday,
April 16, at Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th St., WaKeeney, Kansas. A
rosary will be prayed at 10:45 a.m. A private family burial will follow at Ness
City Cemetery.

From Arctic research to academic recognition, the 20th annual John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days honors the lasting legacy of a beloved Fort Hays State University professor.

The daylong public celebration of academic and creative work by students, faculty, and staff is set for April 24. An online showcase will run April 21–25.

Kaley Schnack, FHSU Grants Coordinator, said the event is also an effort to build familiarity within the community and spotlight the university's work.

"We continue to host this event to allow staff to be able to meet all our community members... contuning to really hone in on all of our research that we're doing at the university," she said.

Hosted by FHSU, the in-person event will feature poster presentations, author showcases, art exhibits and musical performances at various locations across campus.

Free parking, refreshments, games and open exhibits make the event welcoming and enjoyable for the public.

"We have people from all over coming to campus for a variety of events that day. It's an awesome way for everybody to see the hard work that's going into the academics and showing off the amazing and talented faculty, staff and students," Schnack said.

The John Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days showcase academic and creative projects across various fields at FHSU, honoring a late academic mentor.

"Dr. Heinrichs was a well-loved and respected geoscience professor at Fort Hays State," FHSU Alumni Director Kim Cebula said. "It's a great way to honor him and all that he did at the university and for our students."

Heinrichs taught at FHSU from 1957 until his passing in 2014 and was widely recognized for his strong dedication to academic excellence and student achievement.

He was an internationally recognized Arctic researcher whose passion for scholarly and creative work made him a strong supporter of faculty and student research at FHSU. Cebula said his enthusiasm helped spark the launch of SACAD 20 years ago.

The times and locations for the celebration are as follows:

• Academic posters: 8 a.m.–3 p.m. (presenters 1–3 p.m.), Memorial Union

• Community projects: 9–11:30 a.m., Memorial Union Ballroom

• Art displays: 10 a.m.–4 p.m. (some artists 3–4 p.m.), Schmidt Foundation Center for Art &amp; Design

• Applied tech projects: 8 a.m.–3 p.m. (creators 9 a.m.–noon), Center for Applied Technology

• Meet the Authors: 1–3 p.m., Memorial Union Ballroom

• Music performances: various times in Memorial Union Sunset Atrium; Spring Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m., Beach-Schmidt Performing Arts Center

🎙FHSU Heinrichs Scholarly and Creative Activity Days set for April 24

Reid Hale Rogers, 76,
passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Colby, KS surrounded by his loving
family. He was born on April 23, 1948, to Ranard and Margaret (Hale) Rogers in
Norton, KS. Reid was raised in Selden, KS and attended school there until his
senior year when he attended and graduated from Decatur County High School in
Oberlin. Reid obtained his associate’s degree from Colby Community College and
also attended Fort Hays State University.

Reid was united in
marriage to Jo Ann (Jody) Hedge on July 26, 1969, in Hoxie, KS and they lived
the majority of their married life in Rexford, KS where they raised their two
daughters, Penny and Amber.

Reid joined his dad
working at Rogers’ Repair Shop and they farmed in the Selden area for many
years. Later, he went to work for the Thomas County Sheriff’s Department as a
Detention Deputy.

Reid was an avid
outdoorsman and greatly enjoyed both hunting and fishing, including annual elk
hunting trips to Wyoming and fishing in Canada with family and friends. He
taught his grandsons how to hunt and fish and was very proud that they shared
his love for these hobbies.

Reid’s greatest love was
his family. He loved attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
He and his wife, Jody, spent countless hours traveling to sporting events, and
various other activities in which the kids participated. In recent years he
enjoyed spending time with his six great grandchildren, three of whom were
named after him.

Reid was preceded in
death by his parents, his brother Rick, and several in-laws. He is survived by
his wife, Jody, of 55 years; two daughters, Penny (Matthew) Vogler of Colby,
KS, and Amber (David) McCauley of Great Bend, KS; grandchildren, Cole (Danielle)
Christensen, Taylor (Tyson) Espinosa, Jordan (Kyle) Zachgo, Kirstyn (Justin)
Pacheco, Halle Latham, Landen Vogler, and Alyssa McCauley; great grandchildren,
Miles and Cooper Espinosa, Briar and Haynes Zachgo, James Christensen, and
Carter Pacheco.; sister, Diana Fowler and numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces and
nephews.

There will be no
visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at
11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 17, 2025, at the Rexford Community Church, Rexford,
KS. Lunch to follow.

Memorials for Reid have
been designated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital sent in care of
Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home, PO Box 987, Hoxie, KS 67740.

HAYS, Kan. - The 20th-ranked Fort Hays State baseball team rattled off a season-high 21 hits in a 17-7 run rule win over Northeastern State on Sunday (April 13), taking the series with the RiverHawks two games to one. Every Tiger scored at least once and collected at least one hit in the blowout win, including a five-hit day for Tony Moore and four hits from Trey DeGarmo.

With the win, the Tigers (26-10, 20-5 MIAA) secured a trip to the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament with 11 games left to play on the league schedule. The Tigers also reached 20 league wins for the first time in 13 years (2012 - 29-24 overall, 20-19 MIAA).

FHSU never trailed in the contest after the first six batters of the game came in to score on a pair of three-run home runs. DeGarmo crushed the first bomb to left center before Derek Woolwine ripped another three-run home run to right center three batters later, forcing NSU's starting pitcher out of the game before he recorded one out.

The RiverHawks (12-27, 9-16) pulled within 6-2 after solo home runs in the next two frames, but Fort Hays State was able to push the lead back to six with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Moore opened the scoring with an RBI double to left center before later coming in to score on a double play.

Three hits, including a three-run home run, helped NSU close within 8-6 in the top of the fifth, before FHSU answered right back with four runs of its own. Zane Knox and Cooper Howell opened the run with back-to-back singles before Cesar Saavedra and Moore followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Saavedra then scored on a balk before DeGarmo made it 12-6 with a single to left.

Gage Williams, NSU's leadoff hitter, clubbed his second solo home run in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit to 12-7 before the Tigers scraped together four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to help the lead balloon to 16-7.

Woolwine opened the frame with a double before Knox was hit by a pitch. Howell then laid down a sacrifice bunt, with the NSU first baseman opting to go after the lead runner at third. The throw was late and then muffed by the third baseman, allowing Woolwine to scamper home. Moore drove in two more with a single to right before Herrmann made it a nine-run lead with a two-out single to center.

The Tigers walked it off in the bottom of the eighth when Moore led off with his fifth hit of the game. Isaiah Ural followed with a double down the right field line, putting two runners in scoring position for DeGarmo. ⚾No. 20 Baseball Run Rules RiverHawks in Series Finale

An outdoor library is something the FHSU Tiger Tots Pre-School staff had wanted for years. So, when Carol Solko-Olliff, member of Hays’ Noon Rotary Club and co-advisor for the FHSU Rotaract Club, offered to partner with Tiger Tots to bring an outdoor library to the Tiger Tots Pre-School play area, Director Sara Stroup said she “absolutely agreed.”

The Rotary Little Library project is a Rotary 5680 District-wide project to bring “little libraries” to communities within the Rotary District.

According to Solko-Olliff, FHSU’s on-campus childcare center was “the perfect site” for FHSU’s Rotaract Club’s Little Library. Rotaract, a new college-age service organization sponsored and advised by the Hays Sunrise Rotary Club and Noon Rotary Club, is committed to community service and giving back to the Hays and FHSU communities.

“Rotaract has also been actively securing hundreds of children’s books to keep it filled for the Tiger Tots children to have books available daily throughout the school year to take home with them and encourage and promote reading,” Solko-Olliff said.

At an outdoor library ribbon cutting in early April, Tiger Tots clapped and cheered when their new Little Library was unveiled.

“Thank you,” they shrieked in unison.

Around 20 people attended the ribbon-cutting, which was held on International Children’s Book Day. After its unveiling, Dr. Paul Adams, dean of the College of Education, took a moment to express his appreciation for the library.

“It is always good to have partnerships between the community and Fort Hays,” he said. “This is an investment in future Tigers and up-and-coming citizens of Hays. Thank you very much for your support.”

Rotaract, a new college-age service organization sponsored and advised by the Hays Sunrise Rotary Club and Noon Rotary Club, is committed to community service and giving back to the Hays and FHSU communities.“Rotaract has also been actively securing hundreds of children’s books to keep it filled for the Tiger Tots children to have books available daily throughout the school year to take home with them and encourage and promote reading,” Solko-Olliff said.At an outdoor library ribbon cutting in early April, Tiger Tots clapped and cheered when their new Little Library was unveiled.“Thank you,” they shrieked in unison.Around 20 people attended the ribbon-cutting, which was held on International Children’s Book Day. After its unveiling, Dr. Paul Adams, dean of the College of Education, took a moment to express his appreciation for the library.“It is always good to have partnerships between the community and Fort Hays,” he said. “This is an investment in future Tigers and up-and-coming citizens of Hays. Thank you very much for your support.”
