WASHINGTON—After a weekend off social media, Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall returned to the online platform Monday. Marshall commented on a post from President Donald Trump suggesting "paid troublemakers" are attending town hall meetings.

&nbsp;Marshall hosted a town hall to visit with voters on Saturday morning at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley.&nbsp; Many in attendance said Marshall left the meeting before they were finished asking questions.&nbsp; On Monday morning, NBC's TODAY Show&nbsp; featured a clip of Marshall telling those at the the meeting he would leave if they were rude to him.

The Senator did answered questions on budget cuts, layoffs and funding freezes from the somewhat hostile crowd and according to a video taken by Colin McRoberts, Marshall left the event before it was finished.

Marshall did not use social media to promote the town hall in Oakley or livestream the event. On Sunday, a member of Marshall's staff used social media to explain what happened to those who believed he left the town hall meeting early.

Marshall is back in Washington to vote for Linda  McMahon to run President Trump's Education Department.

WASHINGTON (AP)—<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/melania-trump">Melania Trump</a>&nbsp;went to Capitol Hill on Monday to lobby for a bill that would make it a federal crime to post intimate imagery online, whether they are real or AI-created, without an individual's consent and require technology companies to swiftly remove such content.

It was her first solo public appearance since she resumed the role of first lady on Jan. 20.

The first lady said it was “heartbreaking” to see teenagers and especially girls grapple with the fallout after they become the targets of malicious and sexually explicit online content. She called on Congress to prioritize the well-being of young people.

“This toxic environment can be severely damaging. We must prioritize their well-being by equipping them with the support and tools necessary to navigate this hostile digital landscape,” she said during a roundtable discussion about the “Take It Down Act" at the U.S. Capitol.

“Every young person deserves a safe online space to express themself freely, without the looming threat of exploitation or harm,” she said.

The “Take It Down Act,” sponsored by Sens.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-congress-ted-cruz-nil-0a047afaee0087817f64802216109792">Ted Cruz</a>, R-Texas, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/senator-amy-klobuchar-breast-cancer-049efe56e9674767b6fd98be66a4fdd0">Amy Klobuchar</a>, D-Minn., passed the Senate in February. Melania Trump's public support for the legislation could help get it through the Republican-controlled House and to President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-speech-congress-musk-zelenskyy-3b7c80f39606911b9f12e732131fe7d1">Donald Trump's</a>&nbsp;desk to become law.

Cruz was among the lawmakers who joined the first lady for the discussion in the Capitol's Mansfield Room. Online safety advocates and survivors of non-consensual intimate imagery also participated.

Cruz said Monday on social media that the measure was inspired by Elliston Berry and her mother, who visited his office after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/snapchat-snap-layoffs-tech-b67df4deb437af7fc1612425a379cdd4">Snapchat</a>&nbsp;refused for nearly a year to remove an AI-generated nonconsensual graphic image, also known as a “deepfake.”

“No one should have to experience the pain, humiliation, and trauma that so many Americans have at the hands of AI deepfakes,” Cruz said.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/meta-facts-trump-musk-community-notes-413b8495939a058ff2d25fd23f2e0f43">Meta</a>, which owns and operates Facebook and Instagram, supports the legislation.

The bill would make it a federal crime to knowingly publish or threaten to publish intimate imagery online without an individual's consent, including realistic, computer-generated intimate images of people who can be identified.

If the bill becomes law, social media platforms would be required to remove such images within 48 hours of a victim's request and take steps to delete duplicate content.

“Having an intimate image – real or AI-generated - shared without consent can be devastating and Meta developed and backs many efforts to help prevent it,” Meta communications director Andy Stone said on X.

In the first Trump administration, Melania Trump led a youth initiative she called “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/parenting-united-states-government-2aefddc6f11044d4ac340809f9e75bb3">Be Best</a>,” which included a focus on online safety. She has said she’s interested in reviving the program.

The first lady has made few public appearances since the start of the administration.

Hays USD 489 sets work session for tonight

The Ellis County Commission will formally appoint a new Ellis County Health Director during the Ellis County Commission meeting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Ellis County Health Director Melissa Miller was selected after a search process that involved reviewing multiple applicants. She began working with the health department on Feb. 24.

Kerry McCue has been serving as the part-time health director and assisting Miller. He will continue to provide support until March 13.

The county commission is considering approving road repairs and improvements for 48th Street, Vineyard Road and Commerce Parkway by contracting with Bettis Asphalt &amp; Construction.

The county plans to piggyback off the Kansas Department of Transportation contract for the U.S. Highway 183 mill and overlay project to reduce costs.

Northwest Homeland Security project update

Ellis County is receiving funding from the Northwest Home Security Council for multiple emergency response improvements.

Lyle Pantle, Ellis County emergency manager, will discuss with the commissioners these enhancements to increase the county's emergency response capabilities and preparedness.

The commission is considering approving a bid from APAC Kansas Inc. to produce cold mix asphalt for the 2025 asphalt maintenance plan. The material will be used for road overlays and patching to maintain county roadways.

The Ellis County Road and Bridge Division will request approval to purchase a used 2021 Caterpillar excavator to improve road and drainage maintenance.&nbsp;

The commission will consider a lot split request for land in Hays from Platinum Group owner Adam Pray.

Ellis County Commission to appoint new health director

Carl A. Legleiter, age 91, of McCracken, Kansas, passed away on March 1, 2025, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse Kansas.

Carl was born February 18, 1934, in the family farm home near Liebenthal, Kansas, to Joe and Emma (Unrein) Legleiter. He married Velma M. Rogers on June 8, 1952, in the EUB Church in McCracken. The couple made their home over their 71 years together on their farm in Rush County, Kansas. Carl was a lifelong farmer, rancher and also pumped oil wells. He was a member of the Methodist Church of McCracken. He was a 69-year member of the Masonic Lodge and belonged to Walnut City Lodge #215 in Rush Center, Kansas. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and was a 54-year member of the ISIS Shrine in Salina, Kansas. He was a 61-year member of Eastern Star chapter #228.

Carl will always be remembered for his strong work ethic, his kindness and generosity, his sense of humor, and his laugh and smile. His children will remember how hard he worked to take care of them, how proud he was of every single accomplishment they achieved, and the adoration he held for his wife and family. Although skeptical at first, Carl embraced technology and learned how to send and receive text messages on his cell phone. He enjoyed reading emails and reading the Hays Post news on the Internet. He liked watching live cattle sales around the country and viewing some of his son’s, Roger's, auctions online. He also enjoyed watching YouTube videos regarding antique farm machinery. He and his wife, Velma, loved to travel; they also went on many bus trips and other excursions by car.

In his later years, Carl enjoyed tinkering with old lawn mowers and other equipment. He restored several of his children's childhood toys as well as an old pot belly stove. He spent innumerable hours with the restoration of

a 1949 Minneapolis Moline tractor and was filled with great pride and satisfaction with the end result. He enjoyed displaying the restoration and drove it in multiple local parades.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alois, Jerome, and Kenny; sisters, Helen Schmidtberger, Josephine Richmond Adams, infant Mildred Legleiter, and Mildred Skillett; a great-grandson, Jordan J. LaFond, and his wife of 71 years, Velma.

Survivors include a brother, Joe ''Junior'' (Linda) Legleiter, of Dodge City, Kansas; two sons, Mike (Sharolyn) Legleiter of Hays, Kansas, Roger (Brenda) Legleiter of McCracken; a daughter, Lynette (Haydn) Buhr, of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Carla (Brandon) Owen, Brandi (Michael) LaFond, Lance (Rachel) Legleiter, Lee (Sarah) Legleiter, Lisa Legleiter, and Brian Legleiter; nine great-grandchildren; special friend, Florence Herrman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at the McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas.

Funeral service will be Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 10:30 A.M. at the McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas, with Pastor Norma McNair officiating. Interment will be in the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the family request memorials to McCracken Methodist Church, McCracken, Kansas, or the Shriners Hospitals For Children, or the Fort Hays Shrine Club, Hays, Kansas.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Civilian federal jobs are being cut by the thousands, as Elon Musk’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/doge-firings-layoffs-federal-government-workers-musk-d33cdd7872d64d2bdd8fe70c28652654">Department of Government Efficiency</a>&nbsp;continues to shrink the government workforce at the behest of President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>.

That’s brought a lot of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/musk-trump-federal-workers-firings-email-9785e7f74eb2a8b8fde5e01ff0c7717f">churn and uncertainty</a>&nbsp;in the nation’s capital, where 20% of the country’s more than 2 million civilian — or nonmilitary — federal workers are located.

It’s also affecting workers and communities outside the Washington, D.C. area, where about 80% of that workforce is based. Those cuts mean that members of Congress are now facing potential angst among the out-of-work federal employees in their districts across the country.

The precise locations of all of the thousands of federal employees now out of work isn’t yet known, but a look at the areas with the highest concentrations of civilian U.S. government jobs gives a glimpse at some places that could be most affected.

Here’s a breakdown of federal government jobs across the country by the numbers, surveying data from a Congressional Research Service analysis of Census Bureau estimates, as of 2023:

D.C. area, represented by Democrats, has highest federal worker concentration

It’s no surprise that the District of Columbia has the highest percentage of federal workers, who account for 18.5% of the total workforce.

And the areas immediately outside the city, in what’s known as the DMV — which includes Washington and parts of Maryland and Virginia — are next up with the highest concentrations of federal workers, with the top nine districts where percentages of federal workers range from 18.2% down to 8.4%. Most of those districts are represented by Democrats, meaning that some of the areas — albeit those in the D.C. area — likely to have the most significant impacts from DOGE cuts are represented by that party in the U.S. House.

The one with the highest percentage of federal workforce is Maryland’s 5th District, represented by Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer. There, about 18.2% of all workers are employed by the federal government.

After the districts closest to Washington, D.C., there are GOP-represented areas with high federal worker percentages.

Virginia’s 2nd District, represented by Republican Rep. Jennifer Kiggans — along the state’s southeastern border with North Carolina — is the GOP area with the highest concentration of federal workers, at 8.1%. Home to Virginia Beach, and a large U.S. Navy presence, it’s considered among the nation’s most politically competitive districts.

Central Oklahoma’s 4th District, represented by GOP Rep. Tom Cole, has a workforce where 7.7% is employed by the federal government. The district is home to Fort Sill Army Post and Tinker Air Force Base, the latter of which includes the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex. Oklahoma’s largest single-site employer, according to Tinker’s website, the complex provides support for dozens of other Air Force Bases.

Federal employees make up 7.6% of the workforce in Alabama’s 5th District, which includes Huntsville and is represented by Republican Rep. Dale Strong. The area encompasses NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, which has had a role in rocket engineering and U.S. space exploration efforts from the Saturn rockets integral to moon missions, the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station’s laboratory modules.

The data examined here doesn’t pertain directly to military jobs. Thousands of civilian government employees across the country work in areas near or attached to military installations.

Alaska, represented by an at-large Republican, has a high concentration

Alaska’s sole U.S. House member, Rep. Nick Begich, represents a state with a total federal worker percentage of 6.3%.

Scott Goldsmith, an economist at the University of Alaska Anchorage, has described the state’s economy as a “three-legged stool” kept balanced by three components: the oil and gas industry, the federal government, and then all other industries combined.

The federal government manages a significant amount of land in Alaska. Workers are employed by the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management and the Fish and Wildlife Service, among others.

New Mexico has highest percentage of federal workers across all districts

All three of New Mexico’s House districts are represented by Democrats, and all of them have significant federal workforces.

Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory, two major federal research institutions, are located in the state, where the federal government is the No. 2 largest employer, according to the New Mexico Partnership.

Percentages of federal workers across the districts range from 6.3% in Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez’s 3rd District to 6.2% in Rep. Gabriel Vasquez’s 2nd District. In the 1st District, represented by Rep. Melanie Ann Stansbury, the workforce is 6.8% federal employees.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas guard Zeke Mayo showed screenshots of racist, hateful messages he received following his performance in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-tech-kansas-score-98de04f43c3aaa8a4ce2317526cd2f09">a loss to No. 10 Texas Tech</a>.

Mayo shared the screenshots Saturday. His account on X appeared to be deactivated Sunday morning.

“I 100% deserve all the criticism in the world,” he wrote. “My performance was beyond pitiful today, and has been for a while now. ... I can’t be perfect all the time. I’m sorry to our fans and my teammates, I will continue to get better.”

Mayo airballed a potential tying 3-pointer in the final seconds and scored five points on 1-of-7 shooting in a rare Kansas loss at Allen Fieldhouse.

Coach Bill Self and athletic director&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/tgoff11/status/1895990519949631666">Travis Goff</a>&nbsp;condemned the posts and wrote their own messages in support of Mayo.

The most extensive database on Vietnam War causalities was the passion of a man from Hays.

The late Richard Coffelt, a longtime Hays attorney, spent years and his own money researching and amassing the <a href="https://www.coffeltdatabase.org/">Coffelt Database</a>, which is now available for free through the National Archives.

Although others contributed to the database and Coffelt wanted the record source named something more accessible, the database was named in honor of him.

Jo Ann Jennings, Coffelt's wife, recounted information about the database during a lecture at the Hays VFW on Feb. 16.

Coffelt was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He had no connection with the Vietnam War.

However, in 1980, he became acquainted with the mother of&nbsp;Gary Lee Binder of Hays. Gary Binder, who served with the Navy, was killed in action in 1967 in Vietnam, and Coffelt wanted to learn more about the circumstances of Binder's death.

Jennings explained this was before the rise of personal computing and Google, which meant hours spent at libraries, especially the&nbsp;Presidential Library of Lyndon Baines Johnson in Austin, Texas. She said she spent many vacations accompanying Richard on research trips, sometimes at his side in study rooms.

Johnson sent a letter of condolence to every family of a service member killed in Vietnam during his administration. Those letters included the unit numbers of the service members, which made them valuable in Coffelt's research.

Jennings said Richard spent countless hours taking notes on yellow legal pads.

Coffelt saw the need to connect soldiers with other soldiers. The men who served wanted to know what had happened to their buddies.

Jennings said Coffelt was interested in working on the research because the federal government didn't keep track of the units the men who were killed in action were from.

He said having a unit designation was the most important thing to know if you wanted to know what happened to your friend.

“I felt that if I just looked long enough, hard enough, I would hit the mother lode,” Coffelt was quoted as saying in a story published in the February 2012 edition of the VVA Veteran magazine. 

“I still felt that there had to be some government source that would have all this information. It became kind of a game to try and locate the information in some government repository somewhere.”

In 1993-94, after PCs had become commonplace, Tom Holloway (Emory University, Atlanta) changed the landscape by obtaining the Department of Defense's casualty database and the Army Adjutant General's database in digital form, according to the database's website.

"Using the university's mainframe computers to read the reel-to-reel computer tapes,&nbsp;Holloway integrated the two databases and converted the information into a commonly used small-computer format. The "Holloway Database" effectively became the public's sole source of information regarding all American Vietnam dead," the database website said.

The database website said that in the late 1990s, others joined Coffelt's effort, contributing information and collating the collected material into digital form using the Holloway database as a baseline, the database said.

"The additional resources allowed the project's scope to expand to include units of assignment information for all service branches," according to the database's website. "In 2002, an early version of the Coffelt Database was deeded to the National Archives, which made it available online as a searchable database," the database said.

Jennings said Coffelt amassed a library that filled a room floor to ceiling with more than 300 books on Vietnam. She said her husband had read every book.

She said her husband had an almost photographic memory of the information. She recalled a person from Australia writing Coffelt, asking him if he might know what happened to his uncle.&nbsp;

Without the need to look at any source, Coffelt was able to write him a page of the entire account of the battle in which the man's uncle was killed and what happened in that battle.

"He had super-detailed information just from his remembrance," Jennings said.

A Vietnam veteran who worked on the database with Coffelt spoke at his funeral and said, "Richard knew more about what happened in Vietnam than any soldier that was there, and he wasn't there."

Today, the database contains more than 60,000 names and more than 1 million pieces of information. Gary L. Noller, Co. B, 1/46th Infantry, Vietnam 1970-71, called the database a gift to and for Vietnam veterans and their families.

He said in a letter on the database, often, the child or grandchild of a Vietnam casualty wishes to contact a veteran who served with their deceased family member.

Prior to the Coffelt Database, a search of this kind was often overwhelming. The official record listed casualties by unit at the division or brigade level,&nbsp;Noller said in his letter.

Coffelt's research expanded the casualty database to list the company and battalion-level casualties, Noller said.

"This effectively reduced the search for a veteran from a magnitude of 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100. It can be said that the Coffelt Database made the search at least 100 times easier to conduct,"&nbsp;Noller said.

Vietnam veteran Dick Arnold worked on the database with Coffelt.&nbsp;

In a 2011 letter published on the database's website, he said, "I consider my participation in the creation and continued improvement of The Coffelt Database to be one of the proudest parts of my life. I also consider it a singular honor to have known and worked with Richard these last few years. All of us Vietnam veterans owe him a huge debt ..."

Although Coffelt and the others who contributed to the database were offered money to privatize the data, Coffelt and his fellow researchers insisted the database remain a free, open-source of information, Jennings said.

By 2009, Coffelt developed Lewy body dementia. He died on Jan. 25, 2012.

Hays VVA Chapter 939&nbsp;dedicated a plaque at the Hays Regional Airport to honor Coffelt's work in creating the database.

Not only is the Coffelt database still available and in use today. But a story on the database sparked an unlikely friendship between Jennings and a WWII veteran who read a story on the database in a veterans magazine.

Frank Malizia, who was 92 at the time, read that story and recognized Hays as a familiar place. He had been stationed in Great Bend during the war and was familiar with Hays and Ellis County. This led him to contact Jennings.

Holy Family Elementary School notes, March 3-7

HAYS – The Hoxie
Indians claimed their fifth straight team championship at the 3-2-1A state tournament
in Hays Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Norton girls also claimed their first title in program
history in the first year that 3-2-1A was separated from the largest
classifications. 

The Indians had eight medal winners and four individual
champions while racking up 192 team points. Norton was second (146 points)
followed by Phillipsburg (106), Atchinson County (91) and Russell (82).

Norton and Southeast of Saline each finished with two individual
champions, and Russell, Oakley, Beloit, Phillipsburg, West Franklin, and
Douglass each had one champion.

The Norton Lady Jays finished with three champions and six
medal winners. 

Douglass and Oakley each had two champions, and Smith
Center, Whitewater-Remington, Oskaloosa, Hoxie, Stockton, Russell and Hoisington

PARK CITY, Kan. - The Hays High girls wrestling team had five placers and the boys three at the 5A state championships which concluded Saturday at the Park City Arena. 

The Indian girls finished sixth in the team standings. with 94.5 points. Kapaun Mt. Carmel won the girls state title, Basehor-Linwood finished runner-up and Shawnee Heights was third.

The HHS girls team went 8-1 in the first round with all eight victories via pin. Timber Lovewell (31-8) led the way with a third-place finish at 145. Lexi Barnett (17-3) placed fourth at 155, Tionna Napue (20-7) earned her third state medal with a fifth place finish at 135.&nbsp;Ava Ruiz (26-9) also placed fifth at 140 and&nbsp;Eleanor Stoffel (26-9) placed 5th at 190.

Dalton Meyers and Johnny Rigler led the Hays boys with third place finishes. Meyers (30-6) at 175 and Rigler (32-10)&nbsp; at 190. Cyler Luck&nbsp;(29-13) was fifth at 106.&nbsp;

Emersyn Copper (26-16) place is unknown and scored 7.0 team points.

Kenlee Vehige (23-13) place is unknown and scored 4.0 team points.
