JACKSON COUNTY –Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

At 7a.m. October 26, a Sheriff's Deputy stopped a maroon 2022 Kia for an alleged traffic infraction near 134th and U.S. 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The driver, Stephanie Renee Craddock, 41, of Topeka, was arrested on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with law enforcement.

Kansas woman accused of transporting meth

Charlotte Eloise (Kopp) Kindall was born on June 26, 1944 at the Norton County Hospital in Norton, Kansas, the fourth daughter of six born to Alfred and Alice (Hadley) Kopp. She passed away in her home on October 25, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Charlotte was raised on a farm near the Kansas/Nebraska border along with her five sisters. She attended Dry Creek Country School Dist. #117 for first through eighth grade, graduating with classmates Lottie Hawk, Lonesa Wyatt and Bruce Colip. They also went to high school together and graduated in 1961.

On March 30, 1962, Charlotte was united in marriage to David Kindall of rural Norton. They made their home in Norton and were blessed with three sons, Chris, Kem and Kyle. The family soon grew to include seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Charlotte later attended Cloud County Community College and Colby Community College Outreach program to acquire an associate’s degree in applied science. She graduated in May 1993 with honors. She also attended and completed the classes of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organizational Management.

 During her seven years with the Norton Chamber of Commerce, Charlotte served on many state-wide committees promoting Kansas and tourism. She was chosen Business Professional Woman of the Year, “Who’s Who” for U.S. Executives”, and received the Governor's Historical Preservation Award for her work done to refurbish the Adobe Home along with Steve Mathes and Jim Ray.

Survivors include: her husband of sixty-one years, David,their eldest son Chris and his wife Meridel and their son Gaelan, middle son Kem and his daughters McKensy Schroeder and Savanah Horton along with her husband Russhad, and their children Elaina and Noah, youngest son Kyle and his wife Mindy along with their children, granddaughter Kylee Hammond and husband Ryan and her son, Sabastian Coulter, grandsons, Coleman West and Bailey Duvall and fiancé Shasta, and their children Shelby, Dailon, Dayton and Davias.

Also surviving are her sisters Claire Eppinger, Marlene VanMatre, Carolyn Briley, and Kathy Sell, and a host of nieces and nephews and their families.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents Alfred and Alice Kopp, David’s parents Kermit and Evelyn Kindall, sister Gretel and her born sleeping daughter, brothers-in-law Gilbert Janssen, LaDon Eppinger, Jerry VanMatre, Myron Kindall and his wife Peg, sisters-in-law Peggy Kindall, Ferne Demoret and her husband Charles, nephew Derek Pfannenstiel, granddaughter Crescent (Kindall) Elliot.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. Monday, October 30, 2023 also at the funeral home.

Charlotte Eloise Kindall



Mary Beth Klippert, 76, died Monday, October 23, 2023, at Prairie Senior Living Complex in Colby, KS. She was born April 12, 1947, in Denver, CO, to Marvin and Mary Jean Westlake.

 She ran a daycare for many years and did home health in Colorado. 

Mary enjoyed playing bingo, doing crafts, crocheting, and quilting.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Marvin Westlake, Jr. (Skip) and son Larry D. (Skeeter) Klippert.

Mary is survived by her children, Jeff (Becky) Klippert, of Colby, KS, Kevin (Trudy) Klippert, of LaVista, NE and Tracy (John) Koerperich, of Salina, KS; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and also the loving family she had at Prairie Senior.

The family will have a gathering of friends from 2-4 p.m., Monday, November 6, 2023, at the Holiday Inn Express Conference Room, Colby, KS.

Mary Beth Klippert (Westlake)

Bernita Imogene Sramek Beesley died on October 24, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, KS. She was born July 29, 1923, in rural Rawlins County to William F. and Lillie K. (Henkel) Burk. 

She attended three county grade schools: Mayflower, Lone Tree and Prairie Dog. She was a 1940 graduate of McDonald Rural High School and attended Fort Hays State College at Hays, Kansas, earning a teaching certificate and taught at Lone Tree Rural School.

She married Alfred Anthony Sramek on February 24, 1943. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1972 at Rawlins County Hospital. She later married Ray Gorden Beesley on January 29, 1983. He preceded her in death on June 16, 2002 in Quinter, KS.

She was a farmwife, homemaker, mother and a community leader in 4-H Club, Farm Bureau association as a county chairman, district chairwoman, vice-chairman of State Farm Bureau women and state chairwomen. She also served eight years on the 10th District State board. She was a representative of the Agricultural Hall of Fame for NW Kansas. She was an active member of the Catholic Christian Mothers, Altar Society. She served as a Eucharistic minister and as a sacristan at the long-term care home in Quinter for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, parents, two sisters, Eilene Burk (stillborn) and Verna Poore; one brother William (Bill) Paul Burk, who was killed in service in 1950; Bill’s wife Viola, McPherson, KS; and daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Stewart Sramek in 2007.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Jo (Eugene) Schreiner, Mission, KS; Deborah Lynn (David) Henderson, Cabello, New Mexico; one son, Michael William (Shirlee) Sramek and, McDonald, KS. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; three stepsons, Roger, Donald, and Phillip Beesley and wives; plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 9-10:00 a.m., with a rosary at 9:30 a.m., followed by the funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 28, 2023, at St. John Catholic Church, rural Atwood, KS. Interment will take place in St. John Cemetery, rural Atwood, KS.

Bernita I. Sramek Beesley

Deborah Louise Gansel was born April 19, 1959, in Tawas City, Michigan, the first-born child to Alfred David, Jr. and Rebecca (Stoltenberg) Perry. She was later joined by two younger sisters Cheryl and Katherine. 

David was in the Air Force, which meant as a child, she and her family made several moves. After her father’s passing in the spring of 1973, the family moved back to Hill City to be close to family. Debbie cared for her younger sisters while her mom went to nursing school. 

While attending Hill City High School, she became best friends with Darla (Brandyberry) Goodrow. They have remained close throughout their adult lives. 

On March 10, 1979, Debbie married Michael Horton. They made their home in eastern Texas where he worked in the oilfield, and she was a stay-at-home mom and daycare provider. The couple was blessed with their first child on July 10, 1979, when Michelle Lee entered the world. A few years later, on January 12, 1983, Michael Linn joined the family. 

Debbie was very active with her children and was always seen playing with them, going fishing, and doing fun craft projects. She was also a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. In October of 1990, Debbie and Mike were divorced and she and her children moved back to Hill City to be close to her mother, Becky.

Once in Hill City, Debbie quickly jumped into the role of a single mother. She worked long hours and nearly every day (often working split shifts) at the Western Hills Restaurant. The customers loved her, and she loved them. The guys at the round table quickly became like family and were often tasked in her children’s teenage years as informants of things that they were trying to keep secret. Debbie always joked with Michelle that she could find out about a mishap before Michelle had time to make up an excuse. Debbie was not only a great mom to her two children, but also took on the role as second mom to many of their friends.

After many declined invitations by her sister Kathy, Debbie finally agreed to go out one night to have a drink and do something besides work. It’s at this time that the romance of Greg and Debbie began. They each have their own version of who caught the other’s attention first, but anyone watching knew what was going to be. The two were engaged July 5, 1991, during a “wonderful” four-day vacation to the cabin in Woodland Park, Colorado. During that time, they traveled to Cripple Creek (before it was a gambling town) and drove miles along Ridge Road enjoying the scenery. The two were married February 14, 1992 at the We’ve Only Just Begun wedding chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Throughout their marriage Greg’s family often said that Debbie was the answer to their prayers and was the best thing that ever happened to him. 

In the summer of 1993, Greg and Debbie moved into Greg’s grandparents’ house following renovations. Debbie worked tirelessly in the yard making flower gardens, an herb garden, and an overall beautiful backyard with a pond to relax in the evenings. Greg was a devoted husband to Debbie throughout their 31 plus years of marriage.

Debbie started working at the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk and city carrier January of 1999. She had always dreamed of this job and had even tested for it while living in Texas prior to her move back to Kansas. So many of her customers remember her for her contagious smile and laugh, no matter how long the line was or how stressed she might have been. Many customers have mentioned during the time of her illness how they missed the TLC that she gave them at the post office. She enjoyed her co-workers just as much and was always excited to take them some sweet treats to enjoy. If there were too many sweets leftover at home, she took them to the post office, and they would disappear.

In May of 1999, Debbie started her journey in her favorite role, that as grandma. She was one of the best around and as she did with her children, she also became a bonus grandma to many of her grandchildren’s friends. She was known by everyone as Grandma Black, a name given to her by her granddaughter Gracie. While Michelle attended nursing school, Grandma Black took great care of Gabi so Michelle could study and work. After Michelle became a nurse, Debbie was often seen picking up her grandchildren from daycare at Tammy VanLoenen’s if work was keeping her late. Debbie often joked how convenient it was to have a backyard next to the daycare her grandbabies attended and often talked to all the children over the shared fence.

Debbie loved nature and enjoyed a good thunderstorm. She enjoyed the change of the seasons (especially spring and fall) but dreaded the cold of the winter. With each spring, she anxiously awaited the opening of the greenhouse so she could purchase more flowers and plants. She had a large collection of indoor house plants that she kept going all year long and seemed to be able to keep anything alive. 

She was also an amazing cook. She rarely followed a recipe but could make everyone’s day with her concoctions. The only thing she hated about cooking was figuring out what to make for supper. She enjoyed hosting Thanksgiving dinners with her family and taking multiple sides to any family dinners. Everyone knew if Debbie was coming, something good was going to be on the table. 

She enjoyed gardening and she and Greg had an amazing vegetable garden for many years. She had flats of tomatoes in the summer for all the family to grab from and then canned enough salsa to feed a small army. 

She was always an early riser, something she “blamed” on working at the restaurant. She was found each morning at the kitchen table drinking her coffee and finishing the crossword puzzle in the Salina Journal. She truly enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren and was often found playing Scrabble and Upwords. They were always excited if they won, as that was quite the accomplishment, although like most grandmas, the rules were a little different when she played games with them.

As winter settled in this past year, Debbie’s health took a turn for the worse. She and her family rallied to fight this illness through the face of so many complications. Debbie passed away October 19, 2023, at the Graham County Hospital.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. 

Left to mourn are her husband Greg; daughter Michelle (Brett) Billips; son Michael Horton, all of Hill City; grandchildren Gabrielle (Wyatt) Bryant, Great Bend, Gracie, Garrett and Greeley Billips, Cadence McCollum, and Raif Horton, all of Hill City; and great-granddaughter, Saige Bryant; parents-in-law Bert and Marianne Gansel; sisters Cheryl Lee, Stanwood, Washington and Kathy (Tim) Cameron, Hill City; brothers/sisters-in-law Jeff (Sheryl) Gansel, Salina; and Jean (Craig) Morris, Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Debbie was very active with her children and was always seen playing with them, going fishing, and doing fun craft projects. She was also a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. In October of 1990, Debbie and Mike were divorced and she and her children moved back to Hill City to be close to her mother, Becky.Once in Hill City, Debbie quickly jumped into the role of a single mother. She worked long hours and nearly every day (often working split shifts) at the Western Hills Restaurant. The customers loved her, and she loved them. The guys at the round table quickly became like family and were often tasked in her children’s teenage years as informants of things that they were trying to keep secret. Debbie always joked with Michelle that she could find out about a mishap before Michelle had time to make up an excuse. Debbie was not only a great mom to her two children, but also took on the role as second mom to many of their friends.After many declined invitations by her sister Kathy, Debbie finally agreed to go out one night to have a drink and do something besides work. It’s at this time that the romance of Greg and Debbie began. They each have their own version of who caught the other’s attention first, but anyone watching knew what was going to be. The two were engaged July 5, 1991, during a “wonderful” four-day vacation to the cabin in Woodland Park, Colorado. During that time, they traveled to Cripple Creek (before it was a gambling town) and drove miles along Ridge Road enjoying the scenery. The two were married February 14, 1992 at the We’ve Only Just Begun wedding chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Throughout their marriage Greg’s family often said that Debbie was the answer to their prayers and was the best thing that ever happened to him. In the summer of 1993, Greg and Debbie moved into Greg’s grandparents’ house following renovations. Debbie worked tirelessly in the yard making flower gardens, an herb garden, and an overall beautiful backyard with a pond to relax in the evenings. Greg was a devoted husband to Debbie throughout their 31 plus years of marriage.Debbie started working at the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk and city carrier January of 1999. She had always dreamed of this job and had even tested for it while living in Texas prior to her move back to Kansas. So many of her customers remember her for her contagious smile and laugh, no matter how long the line was or how stressed she might have been. Many customers have mentioned during the time of her illness how they missed the TLC that she gave them at the post office. She enjoyed her co-workers just as much and was always excited to take them some sweet treats to enjoy. If there were too many sweets leftover at home, she took them to the post office, and they would disappear.In May of 1999, Debbie started her journey in her favorite role, that as grandma. She was one of the best around and as she did with her children, she also became a bonus grandma to many of her grandchildren’s friends. She was known by everyone as Grandma Black, a name given to her by her granddaughter Gracie. While Michelle attended nursing school, Grandma Black took great care of Gabi so Michelle could study and work. After Michelle became a nurse, Debbie was often seen picking up her grandchildren from daycare at Tammy VanLoenen’s if work was keeping her late. Debbie often joked how convenient it was to have a backyard next to the daycare her grandbabies attended and often talked to all the children over the shared fence.Debbie loved nature and enjoyed a good thunderstorm. She enjoyed the change of the seasons (especially spring and fall) but dreaded the cold of the winter. With each spring, she anxiously awaited the opening of the greenhouse so she could purchase more flowers and plants. She had a large collection of indoor house plants that she kept going all year long and seemed to be able to keep anything alive. She was also an amazing cook. She rarely followed a recipe but could make everyone’s day with her concoctions. The only thing she hated about cooking was figuring out what to make for supper. She enjoyed hosting Thanksgiving dinners with her family and taking multiple sides to any family dinners. Everyone knew if Debbie was coming, something good was going to be on the table. She enjoyed gardening and she and Greg had an amazing vegetable garden for many years. She had flats of tomatoes in the summer for all the family to grab from and then canned enough salsa to feed a small army. She was always an early riser, something she “blamed” on working at the restaurant. She was found each morning at the kitchen table drinking her coffee and finishing the crossword puzzle in the Salina Journal. She truly enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren and was often found playing Scrabble and Upwords. They were always excited if they won, as that was quite the accomplishment, although like most grandmas, the rules were a little different when she played games with them.As winter settled in this past year, Debbie’s health took a turn for the worse. She and her family rallied to fight this illness through the face of so many complications. Debbie passed away October 19, 2023, at the Graham County Hospital.Debbie was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. Deborah Louise Gansel

Marcella Marie Rohleder, was born July 6, 1931, at Quinter Hospital in Quinter, Kansas. She was the first child born to Edward and Goldie (Blackwill) Norton.

She met the love of her life Frank Rohleder in Park, Kansas in the summer of 1948. Their first date was a blind date to the movies with friends. 

Upon graduating from Park High School in 1949, Marcella attended beauty school in Salina, Kansas. 

Frank and Marcella kept in touch and once her schooling was complete, they married on August 30, 1950, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park Kansas. They enjoyed 71+ years of married life.

The happy couple moved to Aurora, Colorado in November 1955. Marcella worked from home raising their family and contributed by ironing and doing hair out of their home.

One of Marcella’s passions was volunteering which she did for St. Therese Catholic Church, Aurora Presbyterian Hospital and Christian Women’s Club, to name a few. In 2003, Marcella was honored by the city of Aurora for her outstanding and lifelong commitment to volunteer work. 

Marcella led by example loving her family and friends unconditionally. She never turned anyone away that needed help. Her greatest joy was in having a house full of family for special occasions or holidays. Her bright light and love will be missed and cherished by all.

Marcella went to heaven to join her devoted husband Frank on October 8, 2023. 

She is survived by her five children, Marylyn Young, Gary Rohleder, Randy Rohleder, Sharon (Terry) Andrews, Lyle (Julie) Rohleder and dozens of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, as well as her sisters, Louella Sullivan, Armella Wetig and Verdella Lewis and their families.

Graveside services will be held Monday, November 6 at 11:00 a.m. at the WaKeeney Veteran's Cemetery followed by a reception from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WaKeeney V.F.W. Her favorite color was purple, so you are encouraged to wear that color if you have it.

Marcella Marie Rohleder

Viola “Vi” (Moeder) Prosser, 90, loving wife, mother, grandmother and faithfully devoted to her Lord and Savior, was welcomed to her heavenly home on Thursday, October 26, 2023. &nbsp;

Viola was born December 23, 1932 and was one of ten siblings. &nbsp;

Vi married Francis Prosser on June 2, 1956 in Odin and they raised five children. They were married for sixty-one years. Following Frank’s death in 2017, Vi continued to live on and operate their family farm.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Altar Society. Vi was passionate about her work as a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus, Pawnee Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Pawnee County Fair Board, Zoning Commission, Red Cross Blood Drive, and as a CASA Advocate.

Viola 'Vi' (Moeder) Prosser

Tylor John Schultz, aka T.J. or Too Tall, 33, lived in Jetmore, KS. He was a 2008 graduate from William S. Hart High School in Newhall, CA.

On October 20, 2023, Tylor passed away in his home, due to a pulmonary embolism.

Tylor was born on April 26, 1990 at Fort Lewis, WA to Mark A. Schultz and Lorie D. Schultz. Tylor grew up as a military child, going here and there. 

After graduation, Tylor joined the Army and served si years. He did two deployments overseas. After Tylor was discharged, he went on to be a sheriff's deputy and a correctional officer. Tylor loved to spend time with his family and friends. 

Tylor had recently re-committed himself to the Lord and was going to be baptized Sunday, October 29, 2023. Tylor loved his country and community with a huge heart. He was the kind of guy to give the shirt off his back to those in need and he will be forever loved and missed.

Tylor was a part of the VFW, NRA and the Three Percenters. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Scott City, KS.

Tylor John Schultz was preceded in death by his father, Mark A. Schultz, grandmother Gloria Schultz, grandfather John Schultz, grandmother Loretta Johnson and aunt Paula Henderson.

Tylor is survived by his mother, Lorie Westbrook of Idalou, Tx, his stepmother, Wendy Price of Parker, Colorado and grandfather, Donald Morlan of McClave, Colorado;&nbsp; his children, Tylor John Schultz, Jr., of Pensacola, Florida, Emmalyn Rose Schultz and Eveleigh Michelle Schultz of Jetmore, Kansas and Jarrod Wade Kingan of Jetmore, Kansas.

Tylor Schultz

Janice Elaine Stoppel, 89, of Russell, Kansas, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, in Russell, Kansas.

Janice was born on September 27, 1934, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Albert E. and Amelia C. (Meier) Strecker. 

A lifelong resident of Russell, she graduated from Russell High School in 1952. 

She married the love of her life Bennie Dean Stoppel on October 20, 1957, in Russell. Janice and Bennie were blessed with three sons Brad, Blaine, and Mike. 

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church and was an active member of the Women’s Circle and Altar Guild.

Janice was dedicated to her family and loved cooking for her family and creating a home where everyone was welcome. Janice was happiest when her house was full of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most of all her sons loved her wry sense of humor and sharp wit. Over the years, the boys brought home many of their friends and judging team buddies, some of which were known to stay at the house for weeks at a time. They loved meals with the family and their conversations with Janice. 

She was a master organizer and the four men in her life tested those skills every day. Everyone knew that once Janice made a decision or commitment, she followed through with dogged determination. 

Janice and Bennie never missed a game, a 4-H meeting, the Russell County Fair, the FFA banquets and the FFA state convention. Janice and Bennie enjoyed the Young Farmers Group and spending time with other ag families in the community. They played cards with friends, and loved attending the fair convention in Topeka. She loved to dance and claimed that Bennie was the best dancer in the world, a fact she was not hesitant to point out to her sons.

While working at Home State Bank and the county treasurer's office, she was known for being able to strike up a conversation with anyone. Those who encountered her, got to know her sense of humor and sharp wit well.

Surviving family include her sons Brad Stoppel and wife Sherri and Blaine Stoppel and wife Kim, all of Russell, Kansas and Mike Stoppel (Charlene Rein-Murphy) of Paola, Kansas; grandchildren Brooke Whitney (Brandon), Blake Stoppel (Jessica), Brady Stoppel (Kaitlyn), Payton and Garret (Kylie) Stoppel and Lily Higgins; seven great-grandchildren Ainsley, Chloe, Colt, Coy, Reata, Brantley and Reinhardt Stoppel. She is also survived by her brother Richard Strecker and wife Judy of Wichita, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bennie, her parents Albert and Amelia Strecker and her brother Kenneth Strecker.

A celebration of Janice’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2023, with the family greeting guests from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas. 

Memorials may be given to the Russell County Food Pantry and sent in care of the mortuary.

Janice and Bennie were blessed with three sons Brad, Blaine, and Mike. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church and was an active member of the Women’s Circle and Altar Guild.Janice was dedicated to her family and loved cooking for her family and creating a home where everyone was welcome. Janice was happiest when her house was full of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most of all her sons loved her wry sense of humor and sharp wit. Over the years, the boys brought home many of their friends and judging team buddies, some of which were known to stay at the house for weeks at a time. They loved meals with the family and their conversations with Janice. She was a master organizer and the four men in her life tested those skills every day. Everyone knew that once Janice made a decision or commitment, she followed through with dogged determination. Janice and Bennie never missed a game, a 4-H meeting, the Russell County Fair, the FFA banquets and the FFA state convention. Janice and Bennie enjoyed the Young Farmers Group and spending time with other ag families in the community. They played cards with friends, and loved attending the fair convention in Topeka. She loved to dance and claimed that Bennie was the best dancer in the world, a fact she was not hesitant to point out to her sons.While working at Home State Bank and the county treasurer's office, she was known for being able to strike up a conversation with anyone. Those who encountered her, got to know her sense of humor and sharp wit well.Surviving family include her sons Brad Stoppel and wife Sherri and Blaine Stoppel and wife Kim, all of Russell, Kansas and Mike Stoppel (Charlene Rein-Murphy) of Paola, Kansas; grandchildren Brooke Whitney (Brandon), Blake Stoppel (Jessica), Brady Stoppel (Kaitlyn), Payton and Garret (Kylie) Stoppel and Lily Higgins; seven great-grandchildren Ainsley, Chloe, Colt, Coy, Reata, Brantley and Reinhardt Stoppel. She is also survived by her brother Richard Strecker and wife Judy of Wichita, Kansas.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bennie, her parents Albert and Amelia Strecker and her brother Kenneth Strecker.A celebration of Janice’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 30, 2023, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas. Gov. directs all Kansas flags at half-staff to honor Lewiston mass shooting

CHASE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 6a.m. Friday in Chase County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic driven by Maria&nbsp;Munoz Alonso, 26, Kansas City, Kansas, was westbound on U.S. 50 eight miles east of Strong City.

The car crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound 2023 Kenworth semi driven by Samuel Dean&nbsp;Strubhar,&nbsp; 53, Lyons, on the south shoulder.

Alonso was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics. One juvenile was present in the car; juvenile record protected data, according to the KHP.&nbsp; Strubhar was not injured. Alonso was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas woman dies after crash with a semi

SOUTH CHINA SEA&nbsp;&nbsp;–&nbsp; A People’s Republic of China J-11 pilot executed an unsafe intercept of a U.S. Air Force B-52 aircraft, which was lawfully conducting routine operations over the South China Sea in international airspace on October 24, according to a statement from the U.S. Indo Pacific Command.

 During the night time intercept, the PRC pilot flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, demonstrated poor airmanship by closing with uncontrolled excessive speed, flying below, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52, putting both aircraft in danger of collision. We are concerned this pilot was unaware of how close he came to causing a collision.

The PRC intercept was conducted at night, with limited visibility, in a manner contrary to international air safety rules and norms. Military aircraft, when intentionally approaching another, shall operate with professional airmanship and give due regard for the safety of other aircraft.

This incident represents the latest example of what the Department of Defense described in the 2023 China Military Power Report (CMPR) as "unsafe, unprofessional, and other behaviors that seek to impinge upon the ability of the United States and other nations to safely conduct operations where international law allows," including more than 180 such interactions since the fall of 2021. Pentagon: Chinese jet flies within 10 feet of U.S. bomber

Larry J. Evans, of rural Gove, was born Sept. 26, 1937, in Quinter, KS, to Jim and Edith (Roberts) Evans. He passed away on October 25, 2023, at the Catholic Care Center in Wichita at the age of 84.

Larry lived his entire life in the Missouri Flats Community of Gove County. 

He walked or rode a horse to the Wild Rose grade school, about a mile from his home. He attended Dighton High School, where on the first day of school he met a pretty girl named Bonnie Pinkston. In 1957, they graduated, and then on New Year's Eve, Larry and Bonnie were married in Dighton. They were married for nearly 66 years.

Larry was a life-long farmer, starting by helping his dad when he was just a boy and continuing to farm with his sons. He loved all aspects of agriculture and continued to grow a successful farming and cattle enterprise with Bryan and Brent.

A man of service, Larry dedicated 43 years to the Western Coop REC board and 25 years to the First National Bank. His influence extended to Sunflower Electric, the Kansas Livestock Association, and Farmers Oil in Dighton. Larry's commitment wasn't limited to business; he was a proud member of the Odd Fellow Lodge in Gove.

Larry's mind was a wealth of agricultural wisdom, and he delighted in sharing it with neighbors, business associates, and even strangers. His childhood stories echoed through the years, retold with joy to his granddaughters. Beyond the fields, Larry found joy in socializing with colleagues at business conferences across the country, annual fishing trips to South Dakota or Colorado, hosting the yearly pheasant hunting group, and flying the skies as a pilot in his Cessna Skylane airplane.

Yet, amidst his love for the land, Larry's heart belonged to his family. His pride in their skills and accomplishments knew no bounds. A moment of profound gratitude came last November when every single family member gathered for Thanksgiving, capturing a cherished moment in a family picture.

Donna Boxberger-Vise, 80, of Johnstown, Colorado, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

Donna was born on September 7, 1943 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the daughter of Betty Rae (Morgan and Dennis Bluejacket.&nbsp; Dennis was killed in WWII in 1944.&nbsp; Betty married Harlan Boxberger, who later adopted Donna.&nbsp; 

She graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1961.

Donna was united in marriage to Kenny Hollinger in 1961.&nbsp; This union was blessed with a daughter, Marcy.&nbsp; Kenny and Donna later got a divorce.&nbsp; Donna was united in marriage to Dale Vise in 1987.

Donna was an avid baker for many years at several businesses around the Johnstown area.&nbsp; Her love of stained glass work would lead her and Dale to own a small business of their own.

Donna had fond memories of the family cabin at Fish Lake, Utah when she was in her teens and as an adult.&nbsp; Her and Dale would spend most of their summers there after they retired.&nbsp; She loved fishing and attending the campground pot luck suppers with all their Fish Lake friends.

Donna is survived by her husband Dale of the home; daughter, Marcy Rohr (Kent) of Russell, Kansas; two grandchildren, Brittany Rohr (Zach) of Dodge City, Kansas, and Kaden Rohr (Jordyn) of Hays, Kansas; her blessed three great-grandchildren, Jaxton Shipley, Grady Shipley and Blair Rohr; sister, Marsha Scott (Jay) of Hays, Kansas; brother, Sam Boxberger (Lois) of Arlington, Kansas; nephews, Dane Boxberger of Wichita, Kansas, and Cory Boxberger of Wichita, Kansas; niece, Stacey Byington (Dave) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Joe F. Dolezal, 80, Hays, passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2023 in Hays, Kansas.

He was born September 16, 1943 in Belleville, Kansas to Elmer and Marcella (Kalivoda) Dolezal. 

He attended school at White School, Cuba and Belleville High School. He did not attend kindergarten because White School had eight grades in one room but no kindergarten. Joe's mother told him he was gifted and didn't need it. His wife reminded him that everything he really needed to know, like sharing, neatness, and good manners, he should have learned in kindergarten-hence his adult problems!

When Joe's abundant musical talent took over in high school age, he drove to Belleville because there were two outstanding music teachers there-Mr. Van Gundy and Mr. Nelson King. Following three busy years at Belleville High School, graduating in 1961, Joe eventually went to Fort Hays State University and majored in music education in 1965 (Mr. King's advice). He earned his master's of music education in 1970.

His freshman year he played Charley Dalrymple in Brigadoon at Fort Hays. In the audience his future wife, Sue Nelson, noticed him singing "Come to Me, Bend to Me" and thought, "Wow, he is talented and cute". A year later, she and Joe finally met when she accompanied him on his voice recital. Then he discovered Sue lived a block from campus with a mother who kept her refrigerator full. Joe enjoyed her food. His sophomore year he had the lead in Kismet.

Joe married Sue Nelson on November 1, 1963, in Hays, both completing their music education degrees. Joe taught two years in Plainville, three years in Belleville, and 28 years in Hays, Kansas. He had three choral groups selected to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association state convention and served as the president of the Kansas American Choral Directors Association. He took four choirs to Europe, three to New York festivals, and five show choirs to Disney World.

Following his retirement in 1998, he and Sue bought a convenience store, laundromat, RV park, and many rental units that kept him busy.

Joe and Sue's union was blessed with three wonderful children, Scott and Darlene (Randa) Dolezal and all three of their sons, Steven and Kate (Koetting) Dolezal with Sofia and Riley, Matt and Meagan (Jennings) Dolezal with Brooks, and Joshua and Alexa (Pacheco) Dolezal with Mark Ryan live in Amarillo, Texas.

Mark Joseph Dolezal, his middle child, died in 2016. He was Joe's right hand managing rental units, etc.

Jan Staab, the apple of her father's eye, married to Kirk Staab, lives in Irving, Texas with two sons Kaden and Callie (Siruta) Staab and Kyler Staab living in Colby, Kansas.

He is also survived by his brother, Loren and Beverly Dolezal, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marcella Dolezal, and his son, Mark Joseph Dolezal.

Joe loved traveling to Broadway musicals, Alaska, Hawaii, Cancun, Czechoslovakia, family ski trips, and K-State bowl games. He loved attending Royals, Fort Hays, and K-State games. His later years were all about his Joe Dolezal Polka Band. He was passionate about his Czechoslovakian folk music and culture and playing his German-purchased button accordion. He and Sue enjoyed walking their dogs, playing bridge, golf, and tennis (a long time ago). He played in an over-the-hill basketball league with fellow teachers until his over-enthusiastic defense caused a one-game suspension!

No words can express his family's sincere feelings of loss and sadness at this time, and how proud they are of his contribution to the musical world in Hays, America. He influenced many generations of high school choral students for four decades. He passed his love of music onto not just his children and grandchildren, but thousands of his students. He left his footprint wherever he went.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at Hays First United Methodist Church with Rev. Craig Hauschild officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorials in Joe’s memory may be made to Hays High Music Department.

Barbara JoAnn Nulton, 81, retired Dillard’s sales associate, died Wednesday, October 25, 2023. 

Preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Mary Staab; daughter, Nikki Renee Nulton. 

Survived by her husband, Neil Nulton; daughter, Kim (Shawn) Clothier, both of Wichita; grandchildren, Ashley (Tyler) Stevenson, Abby Clothier; great-grandchildren, Rhys and Rory Stevenson.

Barbara JoAnn Nulton

Julieta M. Randa, 86, Hays, died Saturday, October 21, 2023 at Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse.

She was born November 22, 1936 in Rush County, Kansas the daughter of George and Helen (Schoendaller) Munsch. 

On November 20, 1954 she was united in marriage to Gerald “Dick” Randa. He died on January 7, 2005.

 Julieta worked for Dinges Drapery and Innovative Innerspace, did alterations for Wiesner Department Store and Ann’s Dress Shop, and started her own business, which included window treatments. She was a very talented seamstress, sewing clothes for her children and grandchildren, making quilts, and going above and beyond with her talents for those she cared deeply for. 

She made and sold homemade noodles, enjoyed Bingo, loved dancing, singing, and she taught herself to play piano by ear. Her memberships included St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen, St. Anthony Altar Society, and the Northwest Kansas Association for the Vision Impaired. She had a strong faith life, devoutly prayed the rosary, and could do anything she put her mind to.

Survivors include her son, Dan Randa and wife Karen of Hays, three daughters, Gloria Pfannenstiel and husband Bob of Hays, Vicky Sauer and husband Ron, and Jackie Gottschalk and husband Wayne, both of Schoenchen, two sisters, Darlene Bortz of Claflin, and Cora Schumacher of Hays, eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, William, four sisters, LaVera Dinges, Marietta Beyer, Bernice Dechant, and Viola Werth, and three grandchildren, Joel Sauer, Eric Gottschalk, and Nathan Gottschalk.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, with Fr. Curtis Carlson, OFM Cap. officiating. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 until service time on Friday at the church. An Altar Society rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7:00, both on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony Cemetery Association or for masses.
