 The City of Hays is seeking public input through a concise, five-question survey regarding the use of fireworks within city limits.

City leaders aim to understand residents’ views amid increasing popularity of personal-use aerial fireworks and rising concerns about fire safety during drought conditions.

City Manager Toby Dougherty emphasized the importance of resident feedback in guiding the City Commission's discussions on fireworks policies.

“As aerial fireworks gain popularity, we need clear insights from residents about their experiences and concerns,” Dougherty said. “This feedback will be pivotal in shaping discussions and potential policy adjustments in the coming months.”

Currently, the city's fireworks policy allows the sale and use of common fireworks from July 2 through July 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., unless suspended due to adverse weather conditions or safety concerns. The survey is designed to quickly gather essential information from residents on their opinions about maintaining or adjusting this policy.

Fire officials highlight that ongoing drought conditions elevate the risks associated with fireworks.

Increasingly dry and warm conditions raise concerns about potential fire outbreaks, underscoring the urgency of this community feedback initiative.

Completing the survey takes only a few minutes, providing city leaders critical data to assess whether current guidelines adequately address community safety.

“We encourage every resident to participate, as their responses directly influence future policy decisions,” Dougherty said.

Virginia Ann Ziegler, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded
by her family on May 7, 2025, at the Sheridan County Health Complex.

Virginia was born on September 22, 1942, in Southeast
Sheridan County, Kansas, to Jake Earl James and Melvina Goff James. She
attended Hoxie Public Schools and graduated from Sheridan Community High School
in 1960. On June 9, 1962, she married the love of her life, Virgil Ziegler, in
Hoxie. In January 1964, they moved to their farm outside of Park, Kansas, where
they raised their family and built a life together.

A lifelong learner, Virginia earned a Bachelor of Science
degree in Home Economics from Fort Hays State University in 1988, and later, a
Master of Science in Dietetics and Nutrition from Kansas State University. She
dedicated her professional life to the field of nutrition, first as the
Registered Dietitian at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter, Kansas, and
later as a consulting traveling dietitian serving numerous county hospitals and
facilities throughout northwest and southwest Kansas until her retirement in
2016. She served as President of the State Board of Dietitians and was honored
with various awards for her contributions to the profession.

Virginia found joy in music, especially playing the piano,
baking homemade goods for family and friends, traveling, and always seeking out
a good casino or the next winning lottery scratcher.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Virgil of Park; her
three children: Kevin Ziegler of Elkins, AR; Cynthia (Rob) Bieberle of Colby,
KS; and Patti (Shay) Ziegler of Phoenix, AZ. She also leaves behind three
beloved grandchildren: Anna Ziegler, Zell (Alysha) Bieberle, and Tayler (Mason)
Wright; and one cherished great-grandchild, Quinn Bieberle.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, four
brothers—Jake E. Jr., Marvin, Darwin “Dale,” and Don—and her sister, Charlotte.

Visitation will be held at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home in
Hoxie, Kansas, on Monday, May 12, 2025, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM&nbsp; and
family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A graveside service will be
held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at St. Frances Cabrini Cemetery,
Hoxie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the

DODGE CITY -&nbsp;&nbsp;The Hays High softball team ran their win streak to four
straight wins, three of them over Liberal, with a sweep of the Lady Red Thursday
in Dodge City. 

The Indians won the first game 10-0 and 13-2 in the second
game. 

GAME 1: 10 HHS, Dodge 0 The Indians scored in four of five innings in the first game
of the doubleheader, and starter Jaylee Summers allowed just two hits in five
innings in a 10-0 Indians victory.

Hays’ Riley Dreher tripled to lead off the first, and Alyse Zimmerman
drove her home with a triple of her own.

Brynlee Brous singled home Zimmerman, and then Lanie Becker
doubled for a 3-0 Hays lead through the first half inning.

Hays added three more runs in the top of the second inning,
scoring on a Zimmerman single, a Brous double, and an Adalie Kippes sacrifice
fly that put Hays up 6-0.

Still leading 6-0 Hays scored a fourth inning run on a
fielder’s choice making it 7-0 Indians.

They closed out the fifth scoring three times. 

Avery Solida drove in the eighth run for Hays with ground
out.

GAME 2: HHS 13, Liberal 2 The Indians scored five runs in the first and third innings,
and Riley Dreher allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings.

Hays wasted little time breaking onto the scoreboard
with runs in the second inning.

HHS scored the game’s first run on a passed ball. With two
down in the inning, Brooklynn Dinkel doubled home a pair of runs, and then
Brynlee Brous capped off the inning with a two-run homer, putting Hays up 5-0. 

Liberal scored a run in the third, cutting Hays’ lead to
5-1, but the Indians added two runs in the fifth on a Lanie Becker RBI single
and a fielder’s choice. 

Brous drove in a run in the sixth on a ground out, and then
Hays’ offense exploded for five more runs in the seventh.

In the five-run seventh, Hays scored on a Jaycee Gibbs RBI
ground out, three straight run scoring doubles by Brynlee Rupp, Alyse Zimmerman

A former HaysMed oncologist has opened a new practice in western Kansas.

Dr. Robert Rodriguez, medical oncologist, and Amanda Volchko, advanced practice provider, started seeing patients two weeks ago through their practice, Western Kansas Oncology Group, serving Oakley, Tribune and Goodland.

The practice is based in Tribune but works with all three critical-access hospitals in those three communities. The practice offers in-person visits as well as telemedicine.

The practice is accepting new oncology and hematology patients.

Rodriguez treats cancer patients and blood cancer patients, but under hematology, also treats patients with noncancerous anemia or low platelets, which can happen as a result of interactions with medications or aging.

Rodriguez received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Kansas. He did his residency and fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He spent an additional two years at the medical center before moving to western Kansas to work for HaysMed, where he worked for just less than 10 years.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/a05ca048-415e-412f-bcea-55ff325a76b9">Rodriguez was one of two former HaysMed doctors who sued the hospital, arguing the noncompete clauses&nbsp;in their contracts, which would have kept them from practicing within a 110-mile radius of Hays, were too restrictive.</a>

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/057d44cb-ad96-4aab-951d-a71a18cbee0a">&nbsp;The doctors and hospital came to a resolution through meditation, but the terms of that agreement were kept confidential.</a>

Volchko was born and raised in New Jersey. She trained in Philadelphia before a recruiter hired her to work in Hoxie. Rodriguez met Volchko while working in Hays, and she expressed an interest in working with cancer patients.

"My No. 1 directive at this point is to bring treatment locally," Rodriguez said. "In my time at my previous employment, everyone had to come to our location, come to Hays, come to the University of Kansas."

"We're trying to keep people as close to home as possible. Our primary directive is to get as much of that care done locally as possible, including cancer evaluation, chemotherapy administration, and diagnostic imaging and labs. "

Rodriguez said getting treatment close to home makes a "huge" difference for cancer patients.

"If you can imagine any time someone has to get systemic treatment for a malignancy, it's not the best day of their life," he said. "Even when you do it 100% correctly, it still takes a toll on the person."

Bringing care closer to patients means they don't have to drive hours for care. That is physically better for the patient.

"It helps emotionally," Rodriguez said, "and it really does help financially. Sometimes funds are limited. These treatments are expensive."

Patients rarely come for treatment alone. Rodriguez said local treatment results in less stress for the family members and friends who are assisting the patients.

"The fact that we come to them is greatly beneficial and so appreciated by everyone I have worked with in these first few weeks," he said.

Because there are no cures for the diseases that Rodriguez treats, an oncologist aims to extend life and enhance quality of life.

"In the end, we're trying to buy people more time to live their life, to be with friends, family, and experience things they love," Rodriguez said. "The less time you spend with me, the better. The less time you have to spend traveling, even better than that. We're trying to have our cake and eat it too, where they still get the excellent care they would receive somewhere like the University of Kansas."

He also wanted patients to know he will be their doctor.

"Whether Amanda [Volchko] sees you or not, I am the one making those final plans. I will be making those plans even if I'm on vacation or if it's in the middle of the night, I will be your person," Rodriguez said.

He said he will also work with other physicians as needed, adding that through his experience, he's made many connections with other doctors across the state.

Rodriguez, who is a Goodland native, said he and his wife, who is a Larned native, wanted to stay in western Kansas and give back to rural communities.

"My desire had always been to go back and help the people that helped me," he said. "I didn't get to this place alone. I had excellent teachers and a community that shaped me into the person I am today. I have a sincere desire to help them."

The practice's appointments are filling fast. The Oakley clinic is full through July. Rodriguez said he wanted to thank the community for supporting the practice thus far.

"I'm really excited to get this project going," Rodriguez said. "It's been a dream of mine since graduating from medical school. It's finally happening, and the support that I have received from the community has been nothing but spectacular. I look forward to the rest of my career doing this very thing."

Few embody the spirit of resilience and innovation like Honesty Beaton, a senior Computer Science major at Fort Hays State University (FHSU). A first-generation college student from Wichita, Honesty’s educational journey is a tribute to her determination, a shining example of what can be achieved when passion meets opportunity.

From an early age, Honesty was a tech-savvy problem solver who was always ready to tackle any technology-related challenge. It was this natural inclination towards technology that sparked her interest in the field of computer science, eventually guiding her to FHSU.

"I didn’t think college was an option until my high school advisor, Cammie Kennedy, encouraged me to explore it," Honesty recalls. After her initial visit to Fort Hays, she was drawn to the friendly and supportive atmosphere of the campus, where she felt a sense of belonging.

As she navigated her college experience, Honesty faced obstacles common among many of our students. Balancing two jobs while managing her coursework was no small feat, yet she found solace in the strong support networks at FHSU. Friends from freshman orientation became lifelong companions, while dedicated peers and mentors boosted her confidence and encouraged her to reach new heights.

One pivotal moment in Honesty's FHSU journey was participating in a course on "Video Game Creation." Under the guidance of Dr. Gordon Carlson, Honesty and her team developed a game from scratch, sparking a passion within her for programming and design. This course honed her technical skills and opened doors to exciting research opportunities. Dr. Carlson recognized her enthusiasm and invited her to collaborate on a year-long research project called Realtime Video Underlay, culminating in a presentation about the project at the 2024 Faulkner Challenge—a milestone Honesty never imagined when she began her college career.

Her accomplishments didn’t stop there. As one of the first undergraduate Student Mixed Reality Developers at the Institute for New Media Studies, Honesty was at the forefront of technological innovation on campus, working alongside her peers to tackle complex problems.

"FHSU encourages exploration and creativity," she notes. "I've had the chance to work with augmented reality, virtual reality, and projection mapping, ideas that expand our understanding of technology’s impact on education and society."

Honesty’s future is bright and filled with promise. She plans to graduate in December 2025 with her Bachelor of Science degree and transition into an FHSU master’s degree program in cybersecurity and a new role as a Graduate Research Assistant with the Institute. She also plans to gain real-world professional experience as a data engineering intern at Centene, a Missouri-based healthcare solutions company.

As Honesty reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the challenges and the invaluable lessons learned along the way. "College will test you in ways you never expect." She emphasizes the importance of surrounding oneself with a supportive community. "Making&nbsp;mistakes is okay; it’s about the passion, effort, and support that turns uncertainty into achievement."&nbsp;

Her experience isn’t just a personal triumph; it serves as a larger narrative about the FHSU experience. The university is a model of innovation and support, where students like Honesty are empowered to pursue their dreams. Heart of a Tiger: Meet Honesty Beaton - innovator, leader, change-maker

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State Baseball saw a strong 2025 season close on Thursday in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals at Al Ortolani Field. The No. 3 seeded Tigers fell in 10 innings, 6-5 to the No. 6 seeded Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State in a back-and-forth battle. The Tigers finished the year at 32-16 overall, while the Bearcats moved to 26-24 and advanced to the semifinals.

Fort Hays State was not immune to a day of upsets in the MIAA Tournament as the top three seeds in the tournament all fell in the quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Central Missouri fell to No. 8 seed Missouri Southern and No. 2 seed Pittsburg State fell to No. 7 seed Washburn. No. 4 seeded Central Oklahoma was the only higher seed to survive in a win over No. 5 seed Rogers State.

The Tigers had to battle back into the game early as Ty Riley struggled with command. The Bearcats opened the game with a walk, advancement on a wild pitch, then a double and triple generated two runs before an out was ever recorded. The Bearcats plated one more run to lead by three after a half inning. They tacked on another run in the second to lead 4-0.

The Tigers went to work at the plate in the second inning, putting a quick gash in the Bearcat lead with three runs of their own. Cesar Saavedra walked to lead off the inning, then Elliott Herrmann gave the Tigers two runners in scoring position with a double. Luis Ayala and Cooper Howell had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Bearcat lead in half, then Trey DeGarmo drove in a run with an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third, the Tigers pulled even 4-4 with the Bearcats. Saavedra drew another walk and moved up to second on a throwing error pickoff attempt by the Bearcat pitcher. Herrmann drove him in with an RBI single.

The Tigers took their only lead of the game in the fifth when Saavedra led off with a triple and Tony Moore drove him in on an RBI groundout. However, the Bearcats matched them with a run in the sixth to level the game once again.

There were several key defensive plays in the game for both sides that kept the game tight. With the score 4-4 and no outs with two on in the top of the fifth, the Tigers turned a double play to get out of danger. Up 5-4 in the sixth, the Tigers limited damage in a bases loaded, no outs situation by getting another double play to trade two outs for a run. It helped keep the Bearcats from putting a crooked number on the board. In the top of the seventh, the Tigers kept the game tied when Brady Kreutzer threw a relay to Trey DeGarmo, who gunned down the potential go-ahead run at the plate on a double. The Tigers escaped trouble the remainder of the inning.

On the flip side, Northwest Missouri State turned a critical double play with one out and runners at first and second to end a Tiger threat. Then after taking a 6-5 lead with a pair of clutch two-out hits (single followed by an RBI double), the Bearcats turned another double play in the bottom of the 10th to squelch another potential Tiger rally and went on to win the game. Second baseman Alex Bowers had the key two-out RBI double for the Bearcats in the top of the 10th then was the turn man on the 5-4-3 double play to help secure the Bearcat win.

The Tigers had their chances to add on throughout, outhitting the Bearcats 13-7 in the contest. FHSU recorded at least one hit in every inning except the ninth, an inning where neither team had a hit.

Riley threw 78 pitches in just 3.0 innings of work and faced one batter in the fourth. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks, but managed to strike out four. He finished the year with 115 strikeouts, a new FHSU single-season record and for the meantime took over the NCAA Division II national lead by one.

Cade Flaherty allowed just one run in 3.0 innings of relief with one strikeout, bridging the gap to Brett Jacobs who threw the final 4.0 innings. Jacobs took the tough-luck loss with just the run allowed in the 10th after retiring 10-straight Bearcats before the two-out single and double that generated NWMSU's winning run. He struck out four and moved to 3-1 on the season.

Bearcat starter Ben Haug allowed all five Tigers runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed nine hits and four walks, while recording six strikeouts. The Tigers could not solve reliever Brock Steggall, who kept the Tigers scoreless over the final 4.0 innings with one strikeout. He moved to 6-2 on the season with the win.

Isaiah Ural led the Tigers with three hits in the game (3-for-4), while Herrmann, Howell, and Ayala all had two hits. Saavedra scored three of the five Tiger runs.

The Tigers were among the 10 teams listed alphabetically in the first release of NCAA Regional Rankings, then held the No. 9 ranking in the second edition. After a trio of losses at Rogers State, FHSU fell out of the region rankings in the final release before the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers needed to win the tournament for the conference's automatic bid in hopes of extending its season into the national tournament. Central Missouri (No. 1), Pittsburg State (No. 2), and Central Oklahoma (No. 5) were all among the top five in the rankings going into the MIAA Tournament.

Fort Hays State won over 30 games for the first time since the 2010 season when it had 31. The 32 wins is the most since the 2007 when the Tigers won 33 and the 16 losses are the fewest in a full season (COVID year excluded) since FHSU went 32-16 as well in 2004.

⚾ Tigers season ends in MIAA Quarterfinal loss to Bearcats

Margie Ann Legleiter, 71, Hays, died Thursday, May 8, 2025
at Via Christi Village.

She was born December 11, 1953 in Hays, the daughter of
Julius and Mary Rose (Dreher) Legleiter.&nbsp;
She graduated from Marian High School in 1972 and earned Hotel-Motel
Management certification from LaSalle University.&nbsp; She greatly enjoyed working in the
hospitality industry and excelled in it.&nbsp;
She loved serving people and working side-by-side with her family for 35
years at Midway Motel, and then working as a desk clerk at Hays Super8 for 15
years, retiring in 2022.&nbsp; Margie also
took on the daunting task of being a caregiver for two brothers with special
needs, especially after her father’s passing.&nbsp;
She enjoyed short road trips, her convertible car, an occasional glass
of wine, and generously helping anyone in need.&nbsp;
Margie possessed a deeply devout Catholic faith, was a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, regularly watched EWTN, and was
godmother to many nieces.&nbsp; Margie’s list
of accomplishments in life were endless, her shoes will never be filled, and
she will be greatly missed.&nbsp; May
perpetual light shine upon her and may she rest in peace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Julius and Mary Rose (Dreher) Legleiter.&nbsp;
She graduated from Marian High School in 1972 and earned Hotel-Motel
Management certification from LaSalle University.&nbsp; She greatly enjoyed working in the
hospitality industry and excelled in it.&nbsp;
She loved serving people and working side-by-side with her family for 35
years at Midway Motel, and then working as a desk clerk at Hays Super8 for 15
years, retiring in 2022.&nbsp; Margie also
took on the daunting task of being a caregiver for two brothers with special
needs, especially after her father’s passing.&nbsp;
She enjoyed short road trips, her convertible car, an occasional glass
of wine, and generously helping anyone in need.&nbsp;
Margie possessed a deeply devout Catholic faith, was a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, regularly watched EWTN, and was
godmother to many nieces.&nbsp; Margie’s list
of accomplishments in life were endless, her shoes will never be filled, and
she will be greatly missed.&nbsp; May
perpetual light shine upon her and may she rest in peace.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Survivors include her brothers, Bill Legleiter, Dan
Legleiter, Roger Legleiter, Tim Legleiter and wife Rita, Marty Legleiter, and

Margie Ann Legleiter

James Earl Hinkhouse passed away at the age of 91 on May 4,
2025, with his wife Susan Hinkhouse by his side at Ascension Living Via Christi
Village. Jim was born in Hays, KS, on June 5, 1933, to Earl Dewey and Myrtle
Alice (Noah) Hinkhouse. He spent his childhood and teenage years in Palco, KS,
where his family owned the local grocery store. He often reminisced about those
days, sharing stories of helping out with the family business. Jim attended
school in Palco, graduating in 1951.

After high school, he
continued his education at Fort Hays College, graduating in 1955 with a degree
in Fine Arts Education. His plans to pursue a master’s degree were put on hold
when he was drafted into the Armed Services. He served in the United States
Navy, stationed in San Diego, CA, and Whidbey Island, North Oak, WA. Upon
returning from service, he resumed his studies at Fort Hays College, earning a
Master of Fine Arts.

Jim began his teaching
career in Wichita, KS, where he taught elementary school art and met his future
wife, Judith Davey. They married on July 31, 1960. He later taught at Wichita
Heights High School before continuing his education at the University of Kansas,
where he earned a second Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture.

Following his studies,
Jim accepted his first university faculty position at Marysville College in
Marysville, MO, where he taught ceramics. In 1965, he had the opportunity to
return to Fort Hays State College as an art professor, teaching sculpture and jewelry
design. Over the decades, he was known not just for his talent, but for the way
he supported, hosted, and guided generations of art students—many of whom
remained in touch throughout his life.

While living in Hays,
Jim and Judy welcomed two daughters, Julie Ann and Jami Jo. Both daughters went
on to become art teachers themselves—Julie at the middle-school level, and Jami
in elementary education. Though Jim and Judy’s paths eventually diverged, they
remained connected through their shared commitment to family and art.

On July 13, 1990, Jim
married Susan Elniff, and together they made their home in Hays, KS. Jim
continued his tenure at Fort Hays State University until retiring in 1996.

Beyond his professional
legacy, Jim was known for his many passions and distinctive character. He loved
boating and sailing with his family—and could even ski on one ski. A licensed
pilot and lifelong aviation enthusiast, he not only flew planes himself, but
would seek out the aviation section of every museum he visited (often out of
his way), and delighted in sharing plane-related social media videos with his
grandkids.

Jim also had a great
love for extended road trips. He always insisted on driving—not just for the
joy of the journey, but because he could never pack light and wanted room to
bring back anything he found along the way that might become part of a future art
project. Whether it was a rusty gear, a slab of wood, or a piece of discarded
metal, Jim saw artistic potential in nearly everything.

Equally memorable was
his gift for conversation. Jim was the kind of person who talked with strangers
everywhere he went—not just in passing, but with genuine interest and warmth.
He loved sharing stories, and just as importantly, he loved hearing them.

After retirement, Jim
remained active in the art world, creating many sculptures for public and
private collections. He also transitioned from full-scale flying to the world
of radio-controlled airplanes, continuing to combine his passion for flight and
craftsmanship well into his later years.

Jim is survived by his
wife Susan of the home; daughter Jami (Ryan) Brannen of Scottsdale, AZ;
stepdaughter Susanna (Dave) Stout of Randall, KS; grandchildren Lola
Villalpando-Hinkhouse of Oceanside, CA, and Julian Brannen of Scottsdale, AZ;
as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in
death by his parents, Earl and Myrtle; daughter Julie Ann; sister Jo Eva
McClellan; and brother-in-law Robert McClellan.

He will be remembered
by family, friends, former students, and colleagues for his love of art,
flying, storytelling, and time on the lake.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life
will be held at a later date.&nbsp;

VICTORIA—Victoria's Herzogfest announced its entertainment for its 42-annual festival set for Aug. 8 and 9.

Matfield Green and the Blaine Younger Band will perform on Aug. 8.

The Wes Cossman Band and Dylan Wheeler will perform on Aug. 9.

Entry to all of the performances is free.

"Herzogfest is conducted annually in Victoria. This family oriented event is one of the largest free celebrations in Western Kansas. This free festival encompasses entertainment and family fun for all ages. This event has grown from a one-day sidewalk sale into a weekend celebration," according to the event's website.

The city has received 6.26 inches of rain year to date. That compares to an average of 3.33 inches of rain for the month of May and a 7.92-inch average year to date by the end of May.

The Kansas Drought Monitor, as of Tuesday, had Ellis County listed as abnormally dry, which has improved from moderate drought thanks to recent rains.

That water release began on Monday and will continue through May 16.

The forecast calls for a slight chance of showers between 2 and 4 p.m. today and a 10% chance before 7 p.m. The high today is forecast to be 72.

The forecast through Monday is sunny and clear with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

The Fort Hays State baseball team opens postseason play Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament. The third-seeded Tigers (32-15, 26-10 MIAA) will take on the No. 6 seed Northwest Missouri State (25-24, 19-17 MIAA) beginning at 3 p.m. in Pittsburg, Kan.

The majority of the tournament is being held in Joplin, Mo., however due to potential rain and thunderstorms, the conference office made the decision to use two sites for the opening round on Wednesday and the quarterfinal round on Thursday in an effort to keep the rest of the tournament on schedule.

All semifinal and championship games currently remain as scheduled in Joplin, Mo. should the Tigers advance in the tournament. FHSU would play in the second semifinal beginning at approximately 4 p.m. on Friday, while the title game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

This year's conference tournament features a new format, with 10 teams playing in a single elimination tournament.

The Tigers took two out of three games at home against the Bearcats in the regular season, winning 4-1 in the opener and 4-3 in the rubber game while NWMSU took game two, 13-2. Fort Hays State is 31-41 all-time against the Bearcats, including a 5-4 record under Wichert.

FHSU was well represented on the MIAA postseason awards list, with seven players earning All-MIAA status, one earning Gold Glove honors and two individuals picking up significant awards. Head coach Justin Wichert was named the Steve Anson Coach of the Year, while Ty Riley earned co-MIAA Pitcher of the Year recognition.

Riley and Brandon Chavez were both first team All-MIAA selections, while Trey DeGarmo, Elliott Herrmann and Derek Woolwine were all second team picks. Cade Flaherty and Tony Moore both collected honorable mention status, while Luis Ayala was named the MIAA Gold Glove Award winner at catcher.

Riley leads the conference and ranks second in NCAA Division II with 111 strikeouts this season, breaking a school record that stood for nearly 50 years. Now with 187 career strikeouts, the Bentonville, Ark. native is six shy of the program's career strikeout record. His batting average against of .185 is second-best in the league while his ERA of 2.91 is fourth best among qualified pitchers in the conference.

Chavez pitched a team-high 22 times in the regular season, racking up nine saves and six victories in the process. The lefty's nine saves are second-most in the league and are tied for fifth-most in a season in team history while he is sixth in the conference in the win column.

DeGarmo led the Tigers with 13 home runs on the year, sixth-most in the MIAA. He ranks eighth in the conference with a team-best 54 RBI.

Herrmann was an All-MIAA pick for the second year in a row after earning third team status in 2024. He ranks second on the team and 11th in the conference with 11 home runs while working a team-high 21 walks. The Castle Rock, Colo. native is second on the squad with 43 runs scored.

His batting average against of .185 is second-best in the league while his ERA of 2.91 is fourth best among qualified pitchers in the conference.Chavez pitched a team-high 22 times in the regular season, racking up nine saves and six victories in the process. The lefty's nine saves are second-most in the league and are tied for fifth-most in a season in team history while he is sixth in the conference in the win column.DeGarmo led the Tigers with 13 home runs on the year, sixth-most in the MIAA. He ranks eighth in the conference with a team-best 54 RBI.Herrmann was an All-MIAA pick for the second year in a row after earning third team status in 2024. He ranks second on the team and 11th in the conference with 11 home runs while working a team-high 21 walks. The Castle Rock, Colo. native is second on the squad with 43 runs scored.Woolwine tied for second on the team with 11 home runs in the regular season after mashing a trio of long balls in the final series of the season. The designated hitter is second on the squad with a slugging percentage of .596.Flaherty has been FHSU's starting pitcher 12 times this season, second-most on the team. He tossed a pair of complete games, posting a 4-1 record with an ERA of 4.59 and a batting average against of .257.Moore led the team in multiple categories as a freshman, including batting average (.349), doubles (12) and triples (four). His four triples are tied for fifth-most in the MIAA.Ayala earned the Gold Glove Award behind the plate after leading the league with 17 runners caught stealing. He totaled 319 putouts behind the dish, seventh-most in the league, while posting a fielding percentage of .989.Northwest Missouri State had five All-MIAA selections, including a pair of third team picks in Ashton Neuman and Ryan Williams. Ben Haug, Jaren Guck and Dylan Huff were all honorable mention selections, while Neuman was one of three Gold Glove winners in the outfield.
