Deloris M. (Inderlied) Pianalto, 94, of Atwood, died Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society, Atwood. She was born on November 29, 1929, in DeWitt, NE, the third child of William and Mildred Inderlied. Deloris was baptized on December 22, 1929, and confirmed on May 9, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church, in DeWitt, NE. Deloris attended Country School near the family farm where she was raised. She graduated from DeWitt High School in 1948, then went to work at the Elgin Watch Factory in Lincoln, NE.

In 1952, Deloris moved to California and married a service man in the Marines. They moved to Baton Rouge, LA when he got out of the service. They were blessed in 1956, with son Glenn and another son Roy, in 1969. After they divorced in 1974, Deloris moved back to her hometown, DeWitt, NE.

Deloris met and married Lester Pianalto on May 7, 1982, in Lincoln, NE. They lived on a dairy farm in Atwood, KS until moving into the town of Atwood in 1997.

Deloris joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Atwood, in October of 1994. She was a member of the Christian Mothers Altar Society, Homemakers Club, Coffee Club, Red hat Club and helped with many community projects. Deloris knew no stranger and always had a kind word and helped those in need. She loved watching football games, reading, dancing and many other hobbies.

She was preceded in death by her son Glenn in 1976; her parents; husband Lester Pianalto; sister Betty and brother Lowell.

Survivors include her son Roy Lee Harris and wife Jenn; three stepdaughters, Anita Squier, Diane Kostal and Teresa Clark; sisters, Meryl Hespin and Margie Aksamit; brother Bob Inderlied; five step-grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Visitation is 5-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Baalmann Mortuary, Atwood. Funeral Mass is 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 23, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atwood, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atwood. 🏈 FHSU Autograph Day - Friday, August 23 - Big Creek Crossing in Hays

Discover the creative realm of nature-inspired art at this year's Fall Art Walk featuring two artists, spanning multiple locations throughout downtown Hays.

Brenda Meder, director of the Hays Arts Council, said she is excited for Friday's annual art walk that starts at the Art Center, located at 112 E. 11th St.

"There are a lot of wonderful events and features that are part of this. We have a great lineup," she said.

The art center will showcase works by Glen Ediger from Wichita and Eric Stearns from Nebraska in this fall's exhibition that runs through October 11.

Ediger's innovative "Environmental Exposure" genre involves placing sheets of steel, copper, aluminum, or wood outdoors with materials on top, allowing them to weather for extended periods. This technique produces abstract landscapes through rust, dust and patina.

Stearns’ Raku fired ceramics draws on his interest in mathematics to create patterns that aim to evoke emotional responses. Each piece reflects his identity as both a person and an artist.

Titled "Element," the exhibit serves as the anchor of the art walk which Meder said is perfect for the works of Ediger and Stearns.

"I derive that name from its meaning, which is 'wild and powerful,' like the forces of nature," she said. "Both of our artists represent that."

Ediger is a retired Director of Design at<a href="https://www.vornado.com/"> Vornado Air LLC</a>, where he was involved in the design, engineering and development of Vornado products since 1985.

Stearns is the chairman of the art department at Doane University and also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Fort Hays State University.

The opening reception for "Elemental" is from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hays Art Center and the exhibit will be on display until October 11.

The Fall Art Walk includes various downtown locations and the FHSU campus, featuring exhibitions at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art and the Taylor Gallery.

The two campus exhibits showcase "Hypertopia" by graphic designer Sean Engler and "Base of Reasoning" sculptures by Dan Schluckbier, open from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

"One thing to remember is there's no order you have to follow things. We start campus a little early to give you a chance to catch that and make the evening even longer," Meder said.

The Hays Public Library, 1205 Main St., features "Sorting out Race," a Kansas Humanities touring exhibition with live music by Forrest McCurren.

Other locations you can explore on Friday include:

Victory Highway, now Highway 40, was constructed after World War I to connect the nation and honor returning veterans.

"It grew literally across the country," Meder said. "It's a touring exhibition that has been going around the state and region for quite some time. It's fascinating."

Hays Art Council presents the 2024 Fall Art Walk on Friday 

Goodland, KS resident and former Perham, Minnesota resident, ElVerna Doris “Sam” Carr-Teel, 81, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.

Sam was born on October 18, 1942 in Perham, MN to Herman and Edna (Steeke) Wanderi. She was one of 3 children. Sam attended school in New York Mills, MN, and graduated from New York Mills High School in 1960.

Sam had a love for life. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. When her children and grandchildren were younger, she was known as mom and grammy to all family and friends. She would sit on her patio and watch the birds for hours.

While she had a gypsy soul, her home has always been the Colorado mountains. She had a passion for gardening and baking. She was always sharing her baking with loved ones and the community. During her many different stations with her first husband, she would always bake for the other servicemen.

She had a passion for the Lord and always shared it with her loved ones and community. She was often heard saying “God has a reason.” when encouraging her loved ones through tough times. Sam and her husband, Jerry would often be found reading scripture and praying together in the evenings.

On September 12, 2009, Sam married Jerry Glenn Teel in Colorado Springs. In 2022, they moved to Goodland to be closer to family. While living in Goodland, they were members of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her first husband Robert Carr.

She is survived by her husband Jerry Teel of the home in Goodland, children Simone Kern of Colorado Springs, CO, David (Theresa) Carr of Rogers, MN, Tara (Andrew Rippe) Carr of Colorado Springs, CO, Irene (Bart) Blackwelder of Hennessey, OK and Tiffany (Craig) Bernhardt of Sterling, Colorado. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren; as well as 2 brothers; Richard (Sue) Wanderi and Gary Wanderi all of Perham, MN.

The Celebration of Life will be Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 2:00 PM MT at the picnic ramada in Chambers Park. Those in attendance will need to bring a lawn chair, and the family asks everyone to bring a snack to share.

A family celebration of life for Sam will be held at a later date at Sam and Jerry’s property in the mountains in Park County, Colorado.

ElVerna Doris 'Sam' Carr-Teel

Sandra Sue “Sandy” Tammen, 83, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Sandy was born July 13, 1941, in La Crosse, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Williams) Klaus. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1959 graduate of Bison Rural High School, Bison, Kansas, she was a beautician, homemaker and farm wife.

She was a current member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas, and a former member of the Rush County Fair Board, and Gamma Zeta Sorority. She was also a former member of Hopewell Neighbors. When Hopewell Neighbors disbanded, Sandy became a member of Prairie Pals.

Sandy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and taking care of her flowers.

On October 13, 1959, she married Dale Tammen at the United Methodist Church, Bison, Kansas.

Survivors include: her husband, Dale Tammen, Rush Center, Kansas; one son, Kent Tammen (Mary Jo), Hays, Kansas; one daughter, Kayla Hardwick (Daryl), Hays, Kansas; six grandchildren, Ashley Perez (Tabre), Austin Tammen (Lindsey Morrissey), Tyler Hardwick, Samantha Shaffer (Phillip), Brandon Hardwick, and Courtney Carlino (Daniel); four great grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Billie Klaus, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kyle Tammen; and one brother, Don Klaus.

She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1959 graduate of Bison Rural High School, Bison, Kansas, she was a beautician, homemaker and farm wife.She was a current member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas, and a former member of the Rush County Fair Board, and Gamma Zeta Sorority. She was also a former member of Hopewell Neighbors. Sandra Sue “Sandy” Tammen

Doris Bernice Jones, 101, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the Main Street Manor in Russell, Kansas.

Doris was born on February 14, 1923, in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Carl and Olinda (Krug) Kilian. She grew up in Russell and graduated from Russell High School in the class of 1941. She met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Cecil P. Jones on October 04, 1943, in Russell, Kansas. From this union Doris and Cecil were blessed with two sons Doug and Roger. Doris worked as a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker as well as for the Russell County Treasurer and a waitress. She was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church and was active in many ladies’ groups and church activities. She enjoyed bingo, playing cards and watching professional basketball and University of Kansas basketball. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving family include her sons Doug Jones and wife Penny of Ness City, Kansas, Roger Jones of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother Richard Kilian of Russell, Kansas; sisters Mary Parkhurst of Russell, Kansas and Karen Stafford of Scottsdale, Arizona; 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Frank Kilian.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, August 26, 2024, at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Kansas. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas mother whose 2-year-old son fatally shot his 4-year-old sister has been sentenced to life in prison.

Mariann Belair, 24, won't be eligible for parole until she's served 25 years under the sentence imposed Tuesday in Shawnee County District Court, The Topeka Capital-Journal&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/local/2024/08/20/topekan-gets-life-sentence-after-her-son-fatally-shoots-her-daughter/74879924007/">reported</a>. Jurors found her guilty in May of aggravated child endangerment and first-degree murder in the commission of a felony.

Belair testified at her trial that she removed a loaded 9mm handgun from her diaper bag and placed it on the couch next to her in October while she was home with her 4-year-old daughter, Lawrencia Perez-Belair, and her 2-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter.

She said she had planned to go get food with her family and was making sure she had everything she needed in the bag. She said Lawrencia then “distracted” her by asking her to shoot a cellphone photo of them together.

Deputy District Attorney Lauren Amrein told jurors that the gun sat on the couch at least 12 minutes before Belair's son, who was about to turn 3, picked it up and shot his sister. She said no reasonable person would have let the gun sit there so long with small children present.

Court records show Belair complained in a handwritten motion that her trial attorney discouraged her from taking a plea that would have resulted in her being sentenced to 10 years and three months in prison.

A new attorney assigned to the case has requested a new trial.

Kansas mom sentenced after her 2-year-old fatally shot her 4-year-old

Stanley Glaum, 84, passed away at home in Manhattan, KS on August 17, 2024.

Stanley Allan Glaum was born at home in Alma, NE on October 7, 1939 as the only son of Allan Martin and Leita Irene (Lee) Glaum. They moved to Hastings, NE in 1941; when Allan was deployed to Europe with the US Army Corps of Engineers, Leita and Stanley moved to Phillipsburg, KS where Allan joined them after returning in 1946. He was baptized at the First Christian Church in Phillipsburg. Stanley attended school in Phillipsburg, graduating from Phillipsburg High School on May 23, 1958.

Stan met Letha Mae Hollingshead while they were attending Phillipsburg HS. Even though Stan was a few years older than Letha, they continued dating until she graduated, and were often accompanied by Letha’s younger sisters Edith and Merena. Stan and Letha were united in Holy Matrimony on June 25, 1961 at the First Presbyterian Church in Phillipsburg, KS. They lived in Phillipsburg after marriage and Stan worked as an electrician for the Bear Brand Roofing Company. Their sons Terry and Tony were born during this time.

Stan and Letha moved their family to Manhattan, KS where Stan attended Kansas State University. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy. They added another son Tyler to their family during this period. After graduation, Stan accepted a position with the United States Department of Agriculture as a soil scientist with the Soil Conservation Service. Except for a few years working as a bank officer in Pretty Prairie, KS, Stan worked for the Soil Conservation Service until retirement in 1999. He was stationed in Cimarron, Pretty Prairie, WaKeeney, Washington, Topeka, and Salina. Following retirement, Stan and Letha once again made their home in Manhattan, KS at University Park. Stan took a position with Farmers Mutual Hail Company as a crop insurance adjustor for several years.

Stan was always very active in the community and very generous with his time and talents. During their time in Phillipsburg, he was a member of the Odd Fellow’s Lodge. While in Pretty Prairie, he served as a city clerk and as the President of the Lion’s Club. Stan liked to spend time with his sons and was a Webelo Troop Leader. In WaKeeney, he became the Summer Archery Program Leader for the Parks and Recreation Department. After retirement and their move to Manhattan, Stan continued to be very involved. He served on the Sherman Township Board, the University Park Board, and the Riley County Rural Water District. He was a Trustee for the Riley Presbyterian Church. Stan also served as a Range Safety Officer for the Fancy Creek Shooting Range in Randolph, KS.

Stan made certain his sons were accomplished and had adventurous spirits. All the boys played band instruments, piano, and were active in music in high school, college, and beyond. Stan taught them how to snow ski and swim, and spent time with them riding motorcycles, hunting, and fishing. Stan studied for and obtained his Civil Air Patrol pilot’s license in 1955 and later his private pilot license at Phillipsburg. He developed an interest in forging and built a metal shop at home where he made many knives and letter-openers; he was active with the Blacksmith Associations in Nebraska and Missouri. Stan really enjoyed his time spent at the Fancy Creek Shooting Range in Randolph, KS and made many friends there. He liked the shooting competitions which gave him an opportunity to fine-tune his reloading skills. Stan proudly taught his grandchildren how to handle guns safely and shoot accurately.

Stan loved to explore, so he and Letha travelled widely. Besides visiting many states and relatives in the US, they made a trip-of-a-lifetime to Hawaii. They also travelled to Europe to visit Terry while he was stationed at Ramstein, Germany; while there they explored Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, England, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Stan was a blessing to all who knew him, but his greatest legacy is his family who love and adore him. He was proceeded in death by his parents, and by brothers-in-law Raymond Schick of Densmore, KS and David Rogers of Nixa, MO.

Many family members remain to miss Stan. Letha is at their home in Manhattan, KS. Son Terry, wife Heike, and grand-daughter Kelly reside in Ehweiler, Germany; Terry’s son Justin lives in Ohio with his wife and 2 daughters, daughter Ashley is in Viginia with her 2 daughters, and step-son Marco Jung lives in Germany. Son Tony and wife Deb reside in Linwood, KS; their daughter Jennifer (Joseph) Clark and son Jacob are all living in Kansas. Son Tyler and wife Julie reside in Bettendorf, IA; their son Trevor lives in Indiana and son Jonathan is in Virginia. Also remaining are sisters-in-law Edith Schick of Logan, KS and Merena Rogers (Ron) Poage of Nixa, MO.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Ron Poage &amp; Pastor Harlan Nonhof officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made in care of the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel in Phillipsburg, KS; the family intends them to go to the Fancy Creek Shooting Range where he was a lifetime member to promote youth and gun safety.

The Brass Rail has been transformed from a historic downtown Hays bar to a vibrant salon with a wide range of services.

The salon, 114 E. 11th St., is the former location of the Brass Rail bar, a significant part of Hays' history for more than 70 years.

Transformed into a salon by owner Courtney Clayton, she looks to honor its history while pursuing her dream of creating an environment for people with her interests.

"That's the motivation behind this. I wanted to create a space for people like me."

Clayton teaches at Hays Academy of Hair Design and said her new establishment is perfect for customers who enjoy a "funky, West Coast and trendy hip-hop vibe."

With a team that includes herself, two full-time nail technicians, a cosmetologist and more joining in September, the salon offers pedicures, manicures, nail repairs, haircuts and spa treatments.

"What I specialize in is eyelash extensions, body waxing, things that make you feel more body positive," Clayton said.

The salon's basement features three separate treatment rooms for lashes, facials, and hair removal in a more private environment.

Clayton said its welcoming environment and inviting atmosphere set her salon apart from others in Hays.

After purchasing the former bar, the Hays Historical Society acquired most of the older decorations, including tables, booths, chairs and wall art.

Recognizing its history and strong connection to the people of Hays, Clayton kept the Brass Rail's name, sign and selected interior decorations to honor its legacy.

"I tried to keep as much as I could that still fits into what I'm trying to create," she said. "I think of it as creating something new and vibrant out of something still here."

The Brass Rail bar first opened in downtown Hays in 1950 and was put up for sale in 2017. It continued operating until its lights flickered off for the last time in October.

The Brass Rail Salon celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 3.

Clayton was born in California and has lived in Kansas for about six years. She balances her responsibilities at Hays Academy, raising her 6-year-old daughter and managing the salon.

"We're just getting our feet in the water with the salon," she said. "I love teaching, and I don't see that going anywhere. This is something I'm very passionate about."

Clayton hopes to expand and grow the salon with innovative and exciting beauty techniques in the future.

The hair salon is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

"I love teaching, and I don't see that going anywhere. Medicare open enrollment is scheduled to run Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. That’s when seniors can switch coverage between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage or change a prescription drug plan.

Original Medicare is a health plan that has two parts: Part A (hospital insurance) covers in-patient hospital and skilled nursing care, and Part B (medical insurance) covers physician services. Original Medicare is managed by the federal government. This is the typical Medicare insurance most people are familiar with. These plans typically cost about $165 a month (with the cost deducted from your social security check). Many people pay extra for Medigap, to cover copays and other out-of-pocket costs, as well as a Part D plan for drugs.

Medicare Advantage is a health plan called Part C and is offered by private insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare.&nbsp; It replaces and cancels your Original Medicare plan if you choose this option. It provides the benefits of Part A, B, and often D, usually for about the same amount, with lower copays, so there’s no need for Medigap. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer benefits not in Original Medicare, such as fitness classes or vision and dental care.

Choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage requires careful consideration of your finances and health needs. Medicare Advantage plans can carry hidden risks, especially for people with major health issues. Some people in Medicare Advantage plans may end up paying unexpectedly high costs when they become ill or find that their network lacks the providers they need.

With Original Medicare individuals can see any provider who accepts Medicare, which is most. In addition, several hospitals across the county have decided not to accept Medicare Advantage plans as they can be detrimental to the patients they serve and often not reliable in payments for care. This also is true in Kansas, where we have seen an increasing number of hospitals not accepting Medicare Advantage plans.

Nearly all Medicare Advantage plans (99%) require approvals and authorizations before care can be given. In a 2022 American Medical Association survey, 94% of physicians polled said authorizations delayed medical care. According to KFF, two million Medicare Advantage requested authorizations and approvals were denied in 2021 by Medicare Advantage plans.

Kansans should be aware that the only way to learn about a Medicare Advantage plans’ approval and authorization practices is to ask your physician and hospital provider. Medicare open enrollment coming in October

JOHNSON COUNTY —A former Kansas middle school teacher has reached a plea agreement for child sex crimes.

On August 14, Keil Hileman, 55, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted unlawful sexual relations, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

As part of the plea agreement, the State of Kansas will dismiss&nbsp; four additional sex crime charges against him, according to court documents.

In October of 2022, the Johnson County District Attorney’s office charged Hileman, at the time a Monticello Trails Middle School, USD 232 DeSoto teacher, alleging criminal conduct involving his role as an educator," the district said in the letter to families.

In 2004, Hileman was named Kansas Teacher of the Year and was a finalists for the National Teacher of the Year. He is scheduled for sentencing in November, according to the district attorney's office.

Plea deal: Kan. middle school teacher accused of child sex crimes

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — George Santos, the former New York congressman who spun lies into a brief political career, pleaded guilty Monday to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, acknowledging that he allowed his ambitions to cloud his judgment.

Santos, 36, is likely to spend at least six years in prison and owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution. His federal fraud case, which led to his expulsion from Congress, was just weeks away from going to trial.

“I betrayed the trust of my constituents and supporters. I deeply regret my conduct,” the New York Republican said, his voice trembling as he entered the plea in a Long Island courtroom.

Santos, 36, said he accepted responsibility for his crimes and intends to make amends. He faces more than six years in prison under federal sentencing guidelines and owes at least $370,000 in restitution.

Senior Federal Judge Joanna Seybert scheduled sentencing for Feb. 7.

Santos was indicted on felony charges that he stole from political donors, used campaign contributions to pay for personal expenses, lied to Congress about his wealth and collected unemployment benefits while actually working.

Santos was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-expulsion-vote-ethics-investigation-fd0f1524065883c6b2fe3e6f9afd84db">expelled from the U.S. House</a>&nbsp;after an ethics investigation found “overwhelming evidence” that he had broken the law and exploited his public position for his own profit.

The case&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-case-hearing-e28226562b4bd71327415ba8e4f65b50">has been set to go to trial</a>&nbsp;in early September. If that had happened, federal prosecutors said Monday that they were prepared to call some 40 witnesses, including members of Santos' campaign, employers and family members.

Santos was once touted as a rising political star after he flipped the suburban district that covers the affluent North Shore of Long Island and a slice of the New York City borough of Queens in 2022.

But his life story began unraveling even before he was sworn into office. At the time, reports emerged that he had lied about having a career at top Wall Street firms and a college degree along with other questions swirling about his biography.

New&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-district-of-columbia-congress-george-santos-campaign-finance-f58dc7242796327d81738559885e9078">questions then emerged</a>&nbsp;about his campaign funds.

He was first indicted on federal charges in May 2023, but refused to resign from office.

Santos had previously maintained his innocence, though he said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-trial-plea-new-york-6ecf3896ae1de466bef442dc0409fc15">in an interview</a>&nbsp;in December that a plea deal with prosecutors was “not off the table.”

Asked if he was afraid of going to prison, he told CBS 2 at the time: “I think everybody should be afraid of going to jail, it’s not a pretty place and uh, I definitely want to work very hard to avoid that as best as possible.”

Separately Monday, in Manhattan federal court, Judge Denise Cote tossed out&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-jimmy-kimmel-copyright-lawsuit-41e1c2951945e11c069a41f9ea62281d">a lawsuit in which Santos claimed</a>&nbsp;that late-night host&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jimmy-kimmel">Jimmy Kimmel</a>, ABC and Disney committed copyright infringement and unjustly enriched themselves at his expense by using videos he made&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-cameo-video-7aa0cf8ed6303a1e18da0b7a108e341c">on the Cameo app</a>&nbsp;for a “Jimmy Kimmel Live” segment. The judge said it was clear that Kimmel used the clips, which were also posted to YouTube, for the purposes of criticism and commentary, which is fair use.

Santos had begun selling personalized videos on Cameo in December shortly after his ouster from Congress. He subsequently launched,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-congress-campaign-a4c4cc2ea7cb52a13ec9f8dfc5ede86c">then quickly abandoned</a>, a longshot bid to return to Congress as an independent earlier this year.

In&nbsp;<a href="https://wabcradio.com/show/cindy-adams/">a radio interview</a>&nbsp;that aired Sunday, Santos said he has taken comfort in being a “somewhat private civilian” again.

“I really don’t miss the rubber chicken dinners and the rah-rah-rah parties and fundraisers," he said of his former life.

With his criminal trial looming, he had said in the WABC interview that he was “terrified.”

“This is not absolutely an easy process to go through. It really hurts and it really messes with your psychological health,” he told host Cindy Adams.

As the trial date neared in recent weeks, Santos&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-case-charges-8f869a6afbd97be3bed20db0be523809">had sought</a>&nbsp;to have a partially anonymous jury, with his lawyers arguing in court papers that "the mere risk of public ridicule could influence the individual jurors ability to decide Santos’ case solely on the facts and law as presented in Court.”

He also wanted potential jurors to fill out a written questionnaire gauging their opinions of him. His lawyers argued the survey was needed because “for all intents and purposes, Santos has already been found guilty in the court of public opinion.”

Judge Joanna Seybert agreed to keep jurors’ identities public but said no to the questionnaire.

Prosecutors, meanwhile, had been seeking to admit as evidence some of the financial falsehoods Santos told during his campaign, including that he’d worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs and that he had operated a family-run firm with approximately $80 million in assets,

WASHINGTON — Just a little over a month after she became a candidate for president in the biggest shakeup in generations of presidential politics, Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday will deliver a widely anticipated speech accepting the Democratic nomination at the party’s convention in Chicago.

Harris’ ascent to the top of the ticket after President Joe Biden changed course and said he would not seek reelection has breathed new life into the Democratic bid, with polls showing Harris — who is already&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/kamala-harris-will-be-democratic-presidential-nominee-dnc-announces" target="_blank">the party’s official nominee</a>&nbsp;after a virtual roll call earlier this month — faring much better than Biden was against Republican rival Donald Trump.

Over the course of four days, Democrats will look to capitalize on their base’s newfound enthusiasm for the campaign, with leading speakers aiming to rally the faithful around the party’s positions on reproductive rights, gun safety and voting rights, while<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/harris-ballot-democrats-work-build-momentum-bigger-youth-vote" target="_blank">&nbsp;making a strong pitch to young voters</a>. Harris will also be expected to further lay out her policy positions.

Harris’ nomination is historic. The daughter of immigrants, Harris is the first Black and South Asian woman selected to lead a major party ticket. She would be the first woman of any race to guide the nation as chief executive.

The party has not released an official detailed schedule of speakers, but a convention official confirmed that “current and past presidents are expected to participate in convention programming.” Biden and two former presidents, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as former nominee Hillary Clinton, will all speak,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/12/us/politics/dnc-speakers-biden-obama-clinton.html" target="_blank">according to the New York Times.</a>

Vice presidential candidate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is expected to address the convention Wednesday evening, with Harris’ acceptance speech closing out the convention Thursday, the convention official said.

The evening programming block will run from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Monday and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. the rest of the week.

In addition to the usual television broadcasts, the convention will livestream on several social media platforms, including YouTube, X, Instagram and TikTok. The official live stream will be available on&nbsp;<a href="https://demconvention.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d68a84b1a4b0303a9452770cd&amp;id=e86e03e670&amp;e=a21b6b7198" target="_blank">DemConvention.com</a>.

Scores of Democratic caucus and council meetings, as well as state delegation breakfasts and gatherings, are also scheduled throughout the week’s daytime hours. Media organizations and outside groups are also holding daytime events that will feature Democratic officeholders and candidates.

Protests are also expected over the Biden administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war, with the backdrop of a&nbsp;<a href="https://minnesotareformer.com/2024/04/08/israel-hamas-war-sets-progressive-and-young-voters-on-collision-course-with-white-house/" target="_blank">delegation of uncommitted voters</a>&nbsp;who oppose the war.

As many as 25,000 protestors are expected over the course of the convention, according to DemList, a newsletter for Democratic officials and allies.

Harris’ entry into the race, nearly immediately after Biden&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/president-joe-biden-bows-out-reelection-campaign-harris-vows-win-nomination-8" target="_blank">announced on July 21</a>&nbsp;he would no longer seek reelection, energized Democrats distressed over Biden’s poor showings in polls against Trump, whose reelection bid Biden turned back in 2020.

A Monmouth University&nbsp;<a href="https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/reports/monmouthpoll_US_081424/" target="_blank">poll published Aug. 14</a>&nbsp;showed a huge jump in enthusiasm for Democrats. The survey found 85% of Democratic respondents were excited about the Harris-Trump race. By comparison, only 46% of Democratic respondents said in June they were excited about a Biden-Trump race.

Harris is also seeing better polling numbers in matchups against Trump, with battleground-state and national surveys consistently shifting toward the Democratic ticket since Biden left the race.

Polls of seven battleground states&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cookpolitical.com/survey-research/2024-swing-state-project/fight-redefine-2024-race-president" target="_blank">published</a>&nbsp;by The Cook Political Report With Amy Walter on Aug. 14 showed Harris narrowly leading in five states —&nbsp;Arizona, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — and&nbsp;tied in Georgia and trailing in Nevada. All were improvements from Biden’s standing in the same poll in May.

<a href="https://poll.qu.edu/poll-release?releaseid=3902" target="_blank">An Aug. 14 survey from Quinnipiac University</a>&nbsp;showed Harris with a 48%-45% edge in Pennsylvania. The 3-point advantage for Harris was within the poll’s margin of error.

Democrats hope to carry the momentum through the convention. Polls typically favor a party during and immediately after its national party gathering.

Despite the recent polling, Harris and Walz continue to describe themselves&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkwZ_A49hb8" target="_blank">as underdogs in the race</a>.

In her short time on the campaign trail, Harris has emphasized a few core messages.

She’s made reproductive rights a central focus, including the slogan “We are not going back” in her stump speech after describing Republicans’ position on abortion. Additionally, a Texas woman who had to leave the state for an emergency abortion will speak at the DNC,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/texas-woman-who-left-state-abortion-back-harris-convention-2024-08-15/" target="_blank">according to Reuters.</a>

Harris has also played up her background as a prosecutor, drawing a contrast with Trump’s legal troubles.

Walz has highlighted his working-class background and military service, while attacking Republican positions to restrict reproductive rights and ban certain books in schools.

Walz’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/walz-first-solo-speech-vp-candidate-touts-dem-tickets-labor-union-ties" target="_blank">first solo campaign stop</a>&nbsp;since Harris selected him as her running mate was at a union convention, where he emphasized his union background as a high school teacher.

Walz was not initially considered the favorite to be Harris’ running mate, but his appeal as a Midwesterner with a record of winning tough elections and enacting progressive policies&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/minnesota-gov-tim-walz-picked-harris-her-running-mate-democratic-ticket" target="_blank">led to his selection</a>&nbsp;Aug. 6.

Harris has faced criticism for not sitting down for a formal media interview or holding a press conference since she became a candidate.

Democrats have not finalized their platform for 2024. Adopting a party platform is generally among the official items at a convention.

The party set&nbsp;<a href="https://democrats.org/news/dnc-releases-2024-party-platform-draft-outlining-historic-record-and-bold-agenda-for-president-biden-and-vice-president-harris-to-finish-the-job/" target="_blank">a draft platform</a>&nbsp;in July just eight days before Biden dropped his reelection bid. The document centered on the theme of “finishing the job” and mentioned Biden, then the presumptive nominee, 50 times and Harris 12.

Party spokespeople did not respond to an inquiry this week about plans for an update to the platform.

Reproductive rights will likely be a focus point of any policy wishlist.

Harris, during her time as vice president, has led the administration’s messaging on reproductive rights after the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in the summer of 2022.

Democrats have held their convention in Chicago 11 times, first in 1864 and most recently in 1996.This year’s will be the first in-person Democratic National Convention since 2016. It was upended due to the coronavirus pandemic and held virtually in 2020.Throughout the four-day convention, there will be speeches and side events hosted by state Democratic party leaders.The ceremonial roll call vote with delegates on the convention floor will take place Tuesday.
