WILSON—After 37 years of being a quirky stop on Interstate 70 where you can find popcorn, wine, Kansas books, T-shirts or handpainted limestone, Kansas Originals is facing closure.

Kansas Originals owns its building, but not the land on which it sits. The land was owned by Service Oil Company, but has been purchased by a new owner. The new owner has decided to develop the location as a truck stop and is insisting that the Kansas Originals building be demolished or moved.

Although the store could be relocated, Marge Lawson, co-founder of the nonprofit that created Kansas Originals, said the store is doomed without easy access to I-70.

"Through tumultuous months, with serveral owners, and waiting for two years through a maze of what might be and assurances from local agencies that we are safe, we received legal notice that we must move out and move or tear our building down by Nov. 30 of this year," Kansas Originals said in a letter to the Hays Post.

The letter continued, "It is heartbreaking and unimaginable because we didn't just buy this place and business, we built it with years of total dedication—no 40-hour weeks but 50 and 60 hours, late nights and weekends. We served our artists, craftsmen, travelers and the general public by staying open 362 days a year."

Kansas Originals is not your average souvenir shop off the interstate. It's not kich.

The Post Rock Opportunities Foundation, which is the nonprofit that supports Kansas Originals, shared the history behind the trading post on the Plains.

Thirty-seven years ago, a dedicated group of people from five counties banded together and formed the Post Rock Opportunities Foundation. 

"Led by a pastor who wouldn't give up, and movers and shakers from throughout the area working countless hours, Kansas Originals Market &amp; Gallery became a reality," the letter said. "Our mission is to provide marketplaces for the work of Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers, especially those who are 62 or over, low-income, disabled, minorities or women in business."

The Presbyterian Church provided a $50,000 grant from its One Great House of Sharing to construct the building. Other donors and volunteers followed the church's lead.

Kansas Originals opened on July 27, 1991, during the Wilson Czech Festival.

By 1993, the building was full. The foundation used a grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and a loan from the Northcentral Regional Planning Commission to double the size of the building.

According to the foundation, more than 1,000 corporations, businesses, and individuals have supported the nonprofit through grants, sponsorships and monetary donations.

"Our artists and craftsmen donate to the cause by giving artwork for fundraisers," the letter said.

The Smoky Hill Foundation, Merrill Foundation, Kansas Arts Commission and Dane G. Hansen Foundation are among the Kansas Originals' supporters.

"It was because of the selfless acts of so many who put us before their interests that we were able to succeed. Kansas Originals Market &amp; Gallery and the Post Rock Opportunties Foundation were never created to make any one person or group of people wealthy, it was created to sustain a group of people that would not have had the opportunity for success that Kansas Originals provided," the letter said.

Kansas Originals has been a point of curiosity for people from around the world. A map at the store is packed with push pins marking the homes of visitors from all 50 states and more than 50 countries.

Volunteers says visitors love to take photos with the "The Wizard of Oz" characters and Rusty Rojo, the Orginals' 7-foot chicken.

"The foundation has showcased the work of over 1,960 artists, craftsmen, food producers and authors. It has been our pride and our joy and our honor to serve the talented Kansans and to enable them to have their art, crafts and food products spread across the United States from our spot on the prairie," the letter said.

Some of the Hays area products that have been featured in the store include Popt Popcorn from Hays, Pat's Beef Jerky from Liebenthal, and Patsy's D's Barbecue Sauce from Russell.

One of the most dedicated artists and devoted representatives has been a part of the foundation since it was organized. She served on the board of directors and still brings in paintings and photo albums to sell. She will be 99 in August.

"A comment by the son of one of our many elderly craftspeople, who stopped by the other day to pick up her remaining items after she passed away, tugged at my heart when he told us, 'You gave her a purpose in life. She had a place to come, and she loved coming here,'" the letter said.

The foundation also wanted to honor the memory of Pastor Tom Henstock, who worked tirelessly to keep the dream of Kansas Originals alive and made a significant financial donation upon his passing.

"We were so excited that we were going to be able to make improvements to our building, but instead our future has become uncertain and bleak," the letter said.

The Kansas Originals volunteers fear the sale of the property on which their building sits means the end of the store.

"Without a miracle or intervention from people who care, our dedicated staff will lose their employment," the letter said. "The attractions and businesses in Wilson and Lucas and throughout the region that we so vigorously promote to our millions of travelers will no longer receive that support, and many of our Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers will no longer have a place to sell their work.

"The Tourist Information Center and Kansas Wine Room will be gone. All the history, creating income for the elderly, low-income, disabled and women in business, is scheduled to come to a crashing end."

"We don't want our story to end. We welcome any suggestions, ideas or solutions anyone might have to keep the Post Rock Opportunites and Kansas Originals alive and thriving," the Kansas Originals volunteers and staff said in their letter.

Kansas Originals faces demolition of its building, fears closure

HaysMed proudly announces the successful completion of its first Pulse Field Ablation (PFA) procedure, performed on May 14, 2025, by Dr. Jacob Morgan, electrophysiologist and cardiologist, in collaboration with the HaysMed Catheterization Laboratory team.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in cardiac care for the region, as HaysMed becomes one of the first facilities in western Kansas to utilize the FARAPULSE™ Pulsed Field Ablation System- a newly FDA-approved technology for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib).

PFA represents a next-generation approach to cardiac ablation. Unlike traditional thermal ablation methods that use extreme heat or cold to destroy problematic heart tissue, the FARAPULSE system employs non-thermal, tissue-selective electric fields. This innovation minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding structures while maintaining high efficacy in treating AFib.

I work at Hays Regional Airport, and I’m proud of it. But I’m also deeply concerned because the federal funding that keeps our airport operational is under threat, and not enough people are talking about it.

Small airports like ours are often taken for granted by those in power. They’re dismissed as luxuries or “non-essential” in the grand scheme of federal spending. That’s a dangerous and misguided view. Hays Regional Airport is not a luxury, it is an essential infrastructure. Its existence supports commercial air service, emergency medical flights, mail and cargo delivery, and economic activity across our region. It provides so much more than people realize and is a staple for the community to work.&nbsp;

Federal funding doesn’t just keep the lights on. It pays for critical infrastructure upkeep, runway repairs, snow and ice removal, safety, and communications systems. It ensures we have trained staff and emergency preparedness. Most importantly, it keeps the Essential Air Service (EAS) program running, which is the only reason we have regular commercial flights in and out of Hays. Without EAS funding, our airport would likely lose its airline service altogether, cutting us off from the rest of the country. Cutting jobs and putting livelihoods, including mine, at risk.&nbsp;

This isn’t just about convenience. If we lose flights in Hays, it means longer drives for medical appointments, fewer options for students and professionals traveling for school and work, and real consequences for local businesses that rely on air connections. It means losing jobs, not just at the airport, but in all the industries that benefit from it. The hospital and the college rely on our air services.

It also sends a message that rural communities like Hays don’t matter.

We’ve seen time and again how rural Kansas gets overlooked by policymakers until it’s time to campaign. We hear a lot about “supporting rural America,” but when push comes to shove, too many of our leaders are silent when federal support is pulled away from critical services in towns like ours. That silence speaks volumes. Are we great again yet? No, because this isn't about helping small rural America be great.&nbsp;

Let me be clear. Defunding our airport is not a budget cut. It’s a betrayal.

If you care about Hays and the future of our region, I urge you to speak up! Call your representatives. Write letters and emails. Demand answers. Our airport is too important to let it quietly disappear under the weight of political indifference.

We deserve better. Hays deserves better. And it’s time we all made that known loud and clear!&nbsp;

LETTER: Hays Regional Airport is a community necessity

The Animal Hospital at the Crossroads in Phillipsburg and in Plainville stopped offering general appointments and large animal services on May 9 and 23.

Emergency services at both clinics ended on May 5, according to a Facebook post by The Animal Hospital.

Dr. Lauren Mack will step back from full-time practice and provide only limited, consultative services going forward. The clinics are for sale to new owners.

Mack said in the social media post that it is time to prioritize family as veterinary challenges continue in the region.

"The demand of veterinary practice in a rural area is all-consuming and although I have taken great pride in this journey, it is simply not sustainable," Mack said.

⛳ Area golfers advance to day 2 of state championships

LYON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged murder.

Around 7a.m. on Sunday, the Lyon County Communications Center received a 911 call of an unconscious person at a residence in the 200 block of W 10th Avenue in Emporia, according to Police Captain Lisa Hayes. An ambulance and Emporia Police Officers responded and found 62-year-old Raul Rosado Reyes dead inside the residence.

Emporia Investigations Division led the investigation and identified 36-year-old Alexei Perez-Ricardo as a primary suspect. Perez-Ricardo was apprehended a short time later in eastern Emporia, questioned, and ultimately booked into to the Lyon County Detention Center on requested charges of Murder, Simple Assault and a Weapons Violation.&nbsp;

Detectives believe a confrontation between Reyes and Perez-Ricardo took place on Saturday. Following the confrontation, Perez-Ricardo is believed to have left the scene on foot to areas in eastern Emporia. He was later seen with a bicycle.

Emporia Detectives gathered information from eyewitnesses, home surveillance videos, and cell phones.&nbsp;

Suspect accused in beating death of man at Kansas home

Sister Mary Catherine Grief, baptized Mary Martha,
and formerly known as Sister Catherine Labouré,
died peacefully May 19, 2025, at St. Francis Home, Fond du Lac, WI.

Mary Martha was born in Oak Park, IL, on September
5, 1931, to Ernest Leo and Evelyn Ann Mieling Grief.&nbsp; From an early age, she felt a call to be a
religious sister. Meeting the Sisters of St. Agnes while attending Immaculate
Conception High School in Elmhurst, IL, deepened her desire to pursue religious
life. In September 1950, one year after her high school graduation, Mary Martha
entered St. Agnes Convent.&nbsp; She made her
first profession of vows in the Congregation of Sisters of St. Agnes as Sister
Catherine Labouré on August 15, 1953, in Fond
du Lac, WI. Sister legally changed her name to Mary Catherine years later,
combining her given and religious names.

Throughout her years in ministry, Sister Mary
Catherine lived in a variety of settings, caring for the physical, social, and
spiritual needs of people as a registered nurse, as a nursing instructor, and
as a pastoral minister. Sister Mary Catherine received a BS in Nursing and
Nursing Education from Marian College, Fond du Lac, WI. She earned her MS in
Nursing from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI. She began her healing
ministry by serving as a registered nurse at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac
(1956–1961). In 1961 she became a nursing instructor at St. Agnes School of
Nursing, Fond du Lac, and continued in this role at Marian College, Fond du Lac
(1964–1969). In 1969, Sister moved to Kansas to serve as the Director of the
LPN Program, Instructor of Maternal and Infant Health, and Nurse Educator at
Colby Community College (1969–1978). 

Following her years in Colby, she spent time in
various roles in healthcare in Kansas, California, and Wisconsin while being
drawn from active nursing to serve the spiritual needs of children, youth, and
adults. In 1981, she accepted the position as youth minister at Sacred Heart
Parish in Colby, KS. For the next thirty years she found great joy as a
pastoral associate, social worker and hospice care provider in parishes,
prisons, and social service agencies in Kansas, North Carolina, and Florida.
Beloved among these experiences, were the seventeen years she served as
Coordinator of Ministry to the Sick and Homebound at St. Joseph Parish, Hays, KS.&nbsp;

Sister Mary Catherine returned to Fond du Lac in
2011, lived at the CSA motherhouse, and volunteered at St. Francis Home. In
April 2019, Sister joined the CSA retirement community at Nazareth Court and
Center, Fond du Lac. As her health declined, she became a resident of St.
Francis Home where she received loving care until the time of her death. 

Sister Mary Catherine was preceded in death by her
parents, her sister Madeline Ann Grief, and her beloved brother and
sister-in-law Leo and Maris Grief.

Sister is survived by her nieces, nephews, their
families, and by the Sisters of St. Agnes with whom she lived, prayed, and
ministered.

Services for Sister Mary Catherine will be held on
Friday, May 30, 2025.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30
p.m. at Nazareth Court and Center, 375 Gillett Street, Fond du Lac, WI. 

The Liturgy of Christian
Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis Home Chapel, 33 Everett Street, Fond
du Lac, WI, with Fr. Thomas Zelinski, OFM Cap., presiding. Burial will take
place at St. Joseph Springs Cemetery, Fond du Lac, WI, at a time to be
determined following cremation.

Betty Lou Skillett age 83, of
Hays, Kansas passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Hays Medical Center.

She was born August 12, 1941,
in LaCrosse, Kansas to Charles J. and Elizabeth S. (Hladik) Oborny.&nbsp; She
married Donald G. Skillett on February 8, 1967, at Raton, New Mexico. He
preceded her in death on June 27, 2007.

Betty was a homemaker, and
was clerk at K-Mart and Walmart both in Hays.&nbsp; She grew up in LaCrosse,
Kansas, was a 1959 graduate of LaCrosse High School, and a former member of
Holy Trinity Church in Timken, Kansas.&nbsp; Betty enjoyed crossword puzzles,
gardening, baking, her family, and grandchildren.

Betty is survived by her
children, Kelly Skillett and wife, Linda, Tryon, NC; Karen Skillett, Hays, KS;
Karla Ferdig and husband, Leonard, Beverly Hills, FL; her step-daughters, Susan
Davis and husband, Bruce, McCracken, KS; Cheryl Skillett-Christenson

and husband, Chris,
Lewistown, MT; her eight grandchildren; and her nine step-grandchildren; her
four step-great grandchildren; and one step-great great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by
her parents, Charles J, and Elizabeth S. Oborny; her husband, Donald G.
Skillett; her grandson, Tyler Wade Skillett; her brothers, John Oborny; Charles
Oborny; Leonard Oborny; Larry Oborny; Louis Oborny; her sisters, Mary Ann Nather;

We will start by saying this: everything we have experienced this year in the restaurant has been amazing. We realized that we have many loyal customers and that they really appreciate us for the people that we are, and obviously for our food. Sen. Roger Marshall sought to increase awareness of the farmer mental health crisis during a media call on Thursday.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Marshall said it was a good time to shed light on many of the obstacles U.S. farmers face that can take a toll on their mental health.

"We lose a farmer every day to suicide," Marshall said. "We lose more farmers to suicide than to farm accidents.

"Our whole lives, I'm a fifth-generation farm kid, we are taught farm safety. Don't stand behind a tractor. Don't stand behind a horse. But we were never taught anything about mental health."

Marshall said farmers are seeing a record drop in farm income, he asserted, because of the policies of the Biden administration.&nbsp;

Input costs, such as the cost of fuel as well as the interest rates, have hurt the farmers' bottom lines, Marshall said.

"They have this huge financial stress. Throw on top of that dealing with the Kansas weather, it's a big, big burden that Kansas and all farmers feel," he said.&nbsp;

Many small farms have been in the family for generations, and families are in danger of losing their farms, Marshall said.

"Because of all these things, we're seeing a big surge in farmer suicide," he said.

Marshall urged farmers or family members dealing with mental health issues to call or text the national crisis hotline at 988.

Marshall said he thought the 988 system is working. He said he has visited some 988 call centers and said he thought the system has adequate staff for those services.

Marshall, who is a medical doctor, said to look for signs and symptoms of depression in friends and family members, including trouble sleeping or eating.

Look for people who have withdrawn from social events like going to church or attending local sporting events, he said.

"Be a good neighbor," he said. "Reach out to that person. Sit down with that person. If it's an emergency, call 988. If not, maybe just invite them back to church, take them out for coffee, or say, 'Let's go talk to your family doctor or someone at one of the local mental health centers.'

"There are resources out there. You're not alone."

"It's a very stressful time," Marshall said. "Farmers are very proud, but it's very understandable. The stress is real. It's not in your head. The stress is absolutely real, and we're here to help you."

High Plains Mental Health Center is a&nbsp;Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, and Marshall said he will continue to fight for funding for those centers.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/7a210d6d-6f99-4b7f-9be0-5a9e58e214c4">The tax bill set to be considered by the U.S. Senate, which has been dubbed the Big Beautiful Bill by President Trump, includes cuts to Medicaid</a>.&nbsp;

Medicare and Medicaid provide funding for mental health care for both low-income elderly and those on disability.

 "We are not touching Medicare," Marshall said. "On the Medicaid side of things, we are fighting to strengthen it for those people who need it the most."

Marshall said most of the work on Medicaid will affect states that have expanded Medicaid, which Kansas has not.

"I can't emphasize enough that we are protecting Medicaid for seniors. Forty percent of the seniors in nursing homes are on Medicare and Medicaid. The same would be true for those people with disabilities. We will also do everything we can to protect children as well," Marshall said.

"But I don't think it's right for Kansans to be paying for Medicaid for illegal aliens, and then there's a whole slew of people who are on Medicaid fraudulently. They're enrolled in Medicaid and on food stamps in two different states at the same time and taking advantage of it," he said.

"There is no one up here working harder than me to preserve Medicaid for those people who need it the most," Marshall said.

Marshall was asked about economic development and Farm Service Agency funds that were frozen by the executive branch.&nbsp;

Marshall lauded $500 million in emergency commodity assistance that was distributed this year to Kansas farmers. The funds were meant to ease the pain of high input prices and low commodity prices because of the tariffs.

He said the United States Department of Agriculture put a pause on those programs to deal with fraud, waste and abuse.

"I think it is a work in progress," Marshall said. "We want as much of the money that was allocated for this to get to the farmers, so there are not middle men or it gets stuck up here in Washington."

He said the federal processes are way too complicated and hopes to see more USDA and FSA personnel back in the states and working with farmers on the front lines.

He did not say when the USDA and FSA funds would be released.

Election filing deadline approaching

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Martinez worked seven strong innings and Tyler Stephenson homered to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday.

Martinez (3-5) allowed three singles through six shutout innings and finished seven innings allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Stephenson hit a two-run homer to left in the fifth inning, his second of the season, boosting the Reds' lead to 6-0. Stephenson had three of Cincinnati’s 14 hits.

The Reds lead the majors with 46 first-inning runs and have outscored opponents 46-21 in the first.Gavin Lux and Stephenson drove in runs with two of the Reds five singles in the third inning before Will Benson added a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.Salvador Perez hit a first-pitch, two-run homer in the seventh, snapping Martinez’s homerless streak at 42 2/3 innings. Nick Loftin added a sacrifice fly, cutting Kansas City's deficit to 6-3.Vinnie Pasquantino had three hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 games, including four straight with multiple hits.
