Mae Allen, 95, of Edmond, OK, passed away surrounded by loved ones, on May 27,
2025, at The Veraden Senior Living Center in Edmond, OK.

She
was born on May 24, 1930, in Stockton, Kansas, to Carl and Hazel (Colburn)
Bray.&nbsp; Donna grew up in Stockton and
married Kenneth Carlton Wente, on April 16, 1950.&nbsp; Together, they owned and operated the Prairie
View Cabin Courts in Hill City, KS, and raised four boys: Ronald, Brent, Gary, and
Ken.&nbsp; After the passing of her husband,
she married Bernard Allen on April 14, 1976, and grew her family with two stepsons:
Roger and Lew Allen.

Donna’s
life was dedicated to her family and friends.&nbsp;
She worked many jobs to support her family, but she was best known for
her career as the Board Secretary and Treasurer at the Graham County USD 281
office.&nbsp; She loved traveling and was able
to visit 49 of the 50 states, missing only Alaska.&nbsp; She and Bernard loved the outdoors and spent
many summers enjoying the San De Cristo Mountain range in Southern
Colorado.&nbsp; After retiring, they moved
from Hill City to Bella Vista, Arkansas, to enjoy life in the Ozark mountains.&nbsp; Donna was always focused on family and made
it a point to get her four boys and their families together at least
annually.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Donna
is survived by her children, Ronald (Debra) Wente of Hays, KS, Brent (Christina)
Wente of Bonner Springs, KS, Gary (Connie) Wente of San Saba, TX, Ken (Kathy)
Wente of Cudjoe Key, FL, step sons Roger (Pam) Allen of Salina, KS, and Lew (Jo
Beth) Allen of Athens, GA; ten grandchildren: Chris (Valerie) Wente, Jeff
(Jennie) Wente, Shawn Wente, Nicholas Wente, Cody (Kayla) Wente, Rick (Tracy)
Wente, Lisa (Harold) Jergenson, Garin (Amanda) Wente, Tanner (Amy) Wente, and Jessie
(Cole) Clark; three step grandchildren, Carrie, Paul (Tonya), Rachel; thirteen
great grandchildren: Grace, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Paige, Ava, Austin, Ashlyn, Brenna,
Paxton, Archer, Dierks, Livie, and Bonnie Bray; and several step great
grandchildren.

She
was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Hazel; husbands Kenneth Wente
and Bernard Allen; brothers Robert and William; sisters, Marie McCue, Beulah
Koppes and Loras; two step grandsons, Robbie Allen and Luke Allen.

Donna
will be truly missed by all.&nbsp; She touched
so many lives, and her memories will never be forgotten.

A
service in her honor will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 10:30 am at the
Stinemetz Funeral Home in Hill City, KS with burial to immediately follow at
the Stockton Cemetery.

WICHTIA - Hays used a five-run fifth inning to erase a four-run deficit and defeat Shawnee Heights 7-6 in the 5A State quarterfinals Thursday at Eck Stadium.

The Thunderbirds struck early, scoring in four of the first five innings. Two runs in the bottom of the first inning gave them the early lead. The Indians ended the inning with by throwing a runner out at home on an attempted double steal.

Hays took back one of those runs in the top of the third. Kal Lonsdale was hit by a pitch to open the inning. A Carter Graham sacrifice fly to right field scored Lonsdale for a 2-1 game. Heights added two more runs to their side of the scoreboard. Like in the first inning it was a two-out hit that provided the runs for the Thunderbirds resulting in a 4-1 lead.

Heights went up 5-1 with a single run in the fourth which followed the Indians' third error of the game.

Hays finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Landon Hardman led off the inning with a single and stolen base. Johnny Cano reached on a walk with one out. He and Hardman both advanced on a pair of passed balls. Hardman scored on the second to make the score 5-2.

Jalen Smith reached on error, which Cano scored on, and Graham legged out an infield single to load the bases. Ian McGuire provided the big blow of the inning. A two-out double to that rolled to the left field wall scored three runs for a 6-5 Hays lead.

The Thunderbirds again scored with two outs. This time a triple followed by a passed ball tied the game at six after five innings.

Jalen Smith has been no stranger to big hits late in games. He drove in the game winning run of the regional semi-final two games ago. Thursday afternoon he provided the go ahead hit that scored Lonsdale who led off the inning with a single and stolen base.&nbsp;

Graham and the Hays defense did the rest over the final two innings. Heights led of the bottom of the sixth with a single. That runner was erased with the team's 22nd double play of the season. Three fly ball outs in the seventh inning pushed Hays to the second day of the state tournament.

Graham (5-2) threw all seven innings for the victory. He allowed six runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. He struck out two and walked four on 101 pitches.

Hays (19-8) has won three straight elimination games by one run. Shawnee Heights (21-8) has a four game winning streak snapped.&nbsp;

The Indians advance to play St. Thomas Aquinas Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. The game can be heard on 96.9 KFIX. It will also be streamed on Hays Post.

A Ness County couple who were convicted of mistreatment of a former Air Force nurse who served in Vietnam were sentenced to probation on Wednesday.

L<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/032dc57b-89f7-4905-ba23-e72dd8543a9a">ynn and Opal Schmidt of Ransom were arrested in July&nbsp;each on a charge of mistreatment of a dependent adult, and they entered pleas in Ness County District Court on March 20.</a>

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/441aea96-981d-4ed7-a86b-d273b232e533">The victim's friend, Renata Craft, wrote letters</a> and contacted veterans organizations to attend the couple's sentencing hearing, and supporters of the victim packed the court to capacity on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Ness County Attorney issued the following statement on the sentencing on Wednesday.

Hays received .37 inches of rain as of 9 a.m. today. Hays has received 3.18 inches in the month of May. The low for Wednesday was 51.

On average, Hays receives 3.33 inches of rain in May and 7.92 inches of moisture year to date by the end of May.&nbsp;

The forecast for today is mostly sunny, with a high of 69 and a low of 46. Winds are expected to be around 8 mph.

Sunny skies will continue into the weekend, with a high of 80 on Friday and a high of 87 on Saturday.

The Wild West Festival committee announced Wednesday the return of a carnival to the annual festivities with Garry Moore Amusement Carnival, enhancing the event with family-friendly entertainment and activities.

Scheduled to run alongside the festival concerts, the carnival will operate from July 3 to July 5, bringing a nostalgic and fun-filled atmosphere back to the festival grounds.

Advance daily passes offering unlimited carnival rides will be available for $25 each, providing festival-goers savings compared to the on-site, day-of price of $30.

These advance tickets can be purchased directly at the Wild West Festival grounds from June 28 through July 2, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Tickets will also be available during festival hours on July 2. Additional advanced sales locations throughout Hays will be announced in the coming days.

"We're excited to reintroduce the carnival as part of the Wild West Festival experience," said Julie Edgeman, president of the Wild West Festival committee. "Even though this year’s carnival will be somewhat smaller in scale than in past years, we're thrilled to provide an engaging, fun option for children and families while the main stage concerts are underway. Bringing back the carnival represents our dedicated effort to expand the enjoyment and inclusivity of this beloved community event."

The festival's iconic fireworks show returns as a highlight of Independence Day celebrations, illuminating the night sky starting at 10 p.m. on July 4.

The Wild West Fest 5K will return on July 5, with the same course from previous years, beginning at 8 a.m. near the Hays Aquatic Park. Proceeds from the 5K will help support the Hays Striders youth track club.

Additionally, festival-goers can look forward to the traditional Wild West Festival Parade, which will march through downtown Hays beginning at 10 a.m. on July 5.

Extending the excitement beyond festival dates, the Hays Soccer Club will host the Wild West Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament on July 12.

This annual sports event offers competitive play for all ages and serves as a perfect complement to the community-focused festival.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Noah Cameron pitched into the seventh, scattering six singles as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 to salvage the final game of the series on Wednesday night.

Cameron (2-1) allowed a run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Maikel Garcia singled with one out in the fourth, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, then scored from first on Drew Waters’ deflected single.

In the fifth, John Rave doubled to right, collecting his first major league hit, and scored when Bobby Witt Jr. bounced a two-out double inside the first base bag for a 2-0 lead.

Witt added an insurance run with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

⚾ Cameron delivers another solid outing as Royals top Reds

Marsha
Ann Haines, 78, of Stockton, KS, passed away on May 26, 2025, at the Solomon
Valley Manor in Stockton. She was born on January 8, 1947, to Russell and Leta
(Veverka) Bouchey in Hays, KS. 

Marsha grew
up in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School in 1965. She continued
her education at Kansas State University, earning her bachelor’s degree in
Political Science, and later completed a master’s degree in Speech Pathology at
Fort Hays State University.

On
December 27, 1969, Marsha married the love of her life, Richard Lee “Tom”
Haines, at the United Methodist Church in Stockton. Together they raised three
daughters, and her greatest joy in life was being a devoted wife, mother, and
grandmother.

Marsha
dedicated her professional life to helping others as a speech pathologist,
serving students in the Stockton, Phillipsburg, and Palco school districts. She
had a kind and compassionate heart, always focused on the well-being of those
around her.

A woman
of many interests, Marsha loved quilting, knitting, card games, cooking, reading,
and cheering on her daughters and local athletes at community sports events.
She had a deep love for her family and especially cherished her time with her
grandchildren.

She was a
faithful member of the Stockton United Methodist Church and actively involved
in numerous organizations, including P.E.O., the VFW Auxiliary, FCE, and
4-H—both as a member in her youth and later as a dedicated leader for her
children.

Marsha is
survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Richard Haines of Stockton; her
daughters: Richelle Haines of Olathe, KS, Marissa (Brett) Shelton of Homewood,
IL, and Melanie Haines (Larry Wilson) of Neosho, MO; and five cherished
grandchildren: Violet Wilson, Veverka Shelton, Ellie Wilson, Emmett Wilson, and
Ellora Shelton.

She was
preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Leta Bouchey.

A Funeral
Service will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the Stockton
Church of Restoration in Stockton. Burial will follow at the Stockton Cemetery.
Visitation will be on Sunday, 4-8PM with the family receiving friends 6-7PM at
the funeral home in Stockton.

are suggested to the Rooks County 4-H Council or Stockton EMS and may be sent

LYON COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged murder and&nbsp; have properly identified the homicide victim as 57-year-old Adolfo Callejo Viniegra, according to Emporia Police Captain Lisa Hayes.

Callejo Viniegra has been living in Emporia under the alias of Raul Rosado Reyes since the early 2000s.

Around 7a.m. on Sunday, the Lyon County Communications Center received a 911 call of an unconscious person at a residence in the 200 block of W 10th Avenue in Emporia, according to Hayes. An ambulance and Emporia Police Officers responded and found Reyes dead inside the residence.

Emporia Investigations Division led the investigation and identified 36-year-old Alexei Perez-Ricardo as a primary suspect. Perez-Ricardo was apprehended a short time later in eastern Emporia, questioned, and ultimately booked into to the Lyon County Detention Center on requested charges of Murder, Simple Assault and a Weapons Violation.&nbsp;

Detectives believe a confrontation between Reyes and Perez-Ricardo took place on Saturday. Following the confrontation, Perez-Ricardo is believed to have left the scene on foot to areas in eastern Emporia. He was later seen with a bicycle.

Emporia Detectives gathered information from eyewitnesses, home surveillance videos, and cell phones.&nbsp;

This magical event will feature a masquerade ball theme with music, heavy hors d' oeuvres, drinks, and a dazzling array of silent and live auction items.

Masquerade on Main will be Saturday, May 31, at the beautiful and historic Strand Event Center, 1102 Main. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event will end at 11 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at donatehighplains.com, auctria.events/masqueradeonmain or reserved by emailing staff directly at donate@hpmh.com. A $50 admission ticket includes food, refreshments and a bidding number.

In addition to an extensive array of auction items, the event will feature two fun new raffle games. 🎙 'Masquerade on Main' returns to downtown Hays

The Hays Police Department executed a search warrant Thursday at a child care in Hays after reports of&nbsp;alleged child endangerment and potential drug use, Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said.

He said the search was part of an ongoing investigation.

Scheibler said police officers and officials from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment executed the warrant in the 2500 block of Donald Drive following reports made earlier in the week.

Scheibler said an officer sustained minor injuries from a dog bite during the search. No arrests have been made.

On Friday, the police department requested KDHE issue an emergency suspension to close the facility during the ongoing investigation,&nbsp;Scheibler said.

No names of potential suspects have been released.

Scheibler said all parties are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.&nbsp;

Greensboro, N.C. - The American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings have named Fort Hays State starting pitcher Ty Riley a first team All-Central Region performer, announced Wednesday (May 28) by the coaches association.

It is the third All-Region honor for the Tiger senior this season, joining his first team honor from the D2CCA and his second team recognition from the NCBWA. Riley was also named an honorable mention All-American earlier Wednesday by the D2CCA.

The Friday night starter turned in a stellar senior season, ranking third in Division II with a school-record 115 strikeouts. The righty posted an ERA of 3.11 and a record of 9-1 across 16 outings (15 starts). The MIAA co-Pitcher of the Year posted an opposing batting average of .188, second-best in the MIAA.

The Bentonville, Ark. native ranked 10th in Division II in hits allowed per nine innings (6.22), while his 11.17 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd in the country and his nine wins were second-most in the MIAA.

Riley struck out 16 batters in a game against Colorado-Colorado Springs, second-most in a game by a DII pitcher this season. He racked up seven quality starts and tossed an MIAA-best four complete games, including one nine-inning shutout.

He is the first Tiger to earn All-Region status from the ABCA since 2014 (Clayton Garland).

Riley was one of seven MIAA athletes listed on the first team and one of 13 overall to be named All-Region.

MARSHALL, Minn. - Fort Hays State baseball pitcher Ty Riley was named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) honorable mention All-America list, announced Wednesday (May 28).

The first team All-Central Region starter turned in a stellar senior season, ranking third in Division II with a school-record 115 strikeouts. The righty posted an ERA of 3.11 and a record of 9-1 across 16 outings (15 starts). The MIAA co-Pitcher of the Year posted an opposing batting average of .188, second-best in the MIAA.

Riley is the first Tiger to earn All-America status since 2015 (Kevin Czarnecki) and is the first starting pitcher to earn the honor since 2006 (Bobby Lewton).

He was one of seven MIAA players listed on the All-America list this season.

The CCA All-America and All-Region baseball teams, which are selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) from schools playing Division II baseball, were first established in 2007. This is the ninth year in which the program is solely sponsored by the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
