John Patrick “Pat” Greenleaf, 70, died March 7, 2023, at Wesley Medical 
Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born March 7, 1953, in Pratt, Kansas, the
 son of James O. and Ruth (Huffman) Greenleaf. 
Known for his patience, humility, and hard work, Pat developed this 
character alongside his dad and brother on a ranch in Kiowa County. Pat 
had a God-given ability to work with horses and cattle and grew up 
loving the land of Kansas. Following High School in 1971, Pat enjoyed 
time in Manhattan getting his bachelor’s degree at Kansas State 
University and was a proud member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. 
On November 5, 1977, Pat married Donna Boyle who was his life partner in
 serving people, and with whom he enjoyed traveling and cherishing the 
role of “Grampie” in his last decade of life. Pat and Donna raised their
 twin boys, Justin and Jared, on the ranch during the early years of 
their marriage and parenting. Pat later returned to school and became a 
registered nurse (RN). While continuing to take care of cattle in 
various capacities, Pat also worked as an RN at Kiowa County Memorial 
Hospital and Pratt Regional Medical Center until the week before his 
death. 
A nearly lifetime Greensburg resident, Pat invested in Kiowa county as a
 rancher, nurse, member of the First United Methodist Church, and 
conservation district board member. In his quiet and dependable way, Pat
 deeply loved and cared for the people, land, and animals God allowed 
him to steward while on earth. 
Survivors include his wife Donna, two sons Justin (wife Pam) Greenleaf 
of Hays, Kansas and Jared (wife Amanda) of Kansas City, Kansas, four 
grandchildren Alexander, Elena, Andrew, and Anthony Greenleaf of Hays, a
 sister-in-law Sue Greenleaf of Greensburg, two nephews and a niece and 
their families, and many friends whom he considered as family. He was 
preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jim Greenleaf. 
A graveside service honoring Pat’s life will be held in Fairview 
Cemetery, Greensburg on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 2pm with Pastor 
Dave Mealiff presiding.

Leroy "Bud" Rodman, of Stockton, KS, went to heaven to join his wife 
on February 13, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, at the age of 97. He was 
born in Ree Heights, South Dakota on July 1, 1925.  He was number 12 of 
13 children born to Chalmer and Elsie Rodman.

Bud grew 
up on the farm with 10 sisters and 1 brother which involved many stories
 of South Dakota farming life. He went into the Navy in 1950 at 25 years
 old so he could get away from the farm and served in the Korean War. He
 was discharged in May 1954 and went to work in the Navy Shipyard in 
Bremerton, Washington as a heavy equipment operator; several of his 
family had migrated to Washington by then. He married Irene Knudson on 
September 3, 1954, and they were married for 61 years. The had two 
children, Stephen and Gail.

Bud was an amazing handyman
 who could fix anything. He enjoyed camping, gardening, boating, 
puzzles, and helping others. He was always willing to lend a hand.

Bud
 loved Jesus his Savior and was involved in many church activities 
throughout the years. He attended North Oak Community Church while 
living in Hays. After retirement they traveled for 17 years with Mobile 
Missionary Assistant Program doing building projects in various states. 
In 2005 they settled in Hays, Kansas to be near their daughter. Bud 
loved his family and enjoyed family get togethers, especially visits 
when he was in the nursing home.

Bud is survived by his
 son, Stephen (Brenda) Rodman of Dolan Spring, Arizona; daughter, Gail 
(Ron) Gallaway of Stockton, Kansas; 5 Grandchildren; 9 
Great-Grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene; 2 grandchildren, Carlos and Diego Gallaway; 2 brothers; and 10 sisters.

Bud
 had a deep faith in God and touched many lives. His example of love and
 devotion to His Savior leaves a legacy for generations to come.  A 
legacy that we will carry in our hearts forever.

Graveside Service will be held at the Stockton Cemetery on Saturday, 
February 18, 2023, at 9:30 AM. A Celebration of Life Service will follow
 at 10:30 AM at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Stockton. There will be

Betty Jane (Panter) Smith, 93, was born on July 3, 1929, to Clyde and 
Delilah Panter on a farm north of Athol, KS. She departed life on 
February 3, 2023, at Smith Center Health &amp; Rehab, Smith Center, KS. 
 Betty graduated from Athol High School in 1946 at the age of sixteen.&nbsp;
 She went directly to Fort Hays State College to get a teaching 
certificate.&nbsp; She returned and taught at many local country schools, 
filling in where she was needed. On August 14, 1948, she and 
Arthur Smith were united in marriage.&nbsp; To this union four sons were 
born, Lee – 1950, Dail – 1952, Terry-1956 and Stanley – 1961. 
 Betty gave up her teaching career for her lifetime calling to be a 
mother and a farm wife.&nbsp; She helped on the farm driving grain trucks, 
milking cows, driving tractors, and many other chores.&nbsp; Cooking, sewing,
 cleaning and tending her boys filled her days. Betty had 
many hobbies and was very passionate about her family history from the 
past to the newest born babies, many cousins or generations away.&nbsp; She 
was also very passionate about Athol and wrote two books about Athol 
history.&nbsp; She had many phone calls and visits from people searching for 
family roots from Athol. Betty and Arthur aways enjoyed one 
or two camping trips a year.&nbsp; She bowled on several teams for over 30 
years.&nbsp; She was the Athol city clerk and librarian; she wrote the Athol 
news for the Pioneer newspaper.&nbsp; She was a member of the Home On The 
Range Club, Kensington American Legion Auxiliary, Athol Alumni, she was 
also a lifelong member of the Athol Congregational Church and Women’s 
Fellowship.&nbsp; She liked to sing and shared her voice at many social 
events and funerals. After Arthur’s passing in December 2012,
 Betty moved to Smith Center where she enjoyed her exercise classes, her
 noon meals at the Schrader Center and her faithful Dog “Doc” and 
“Kitty” the cat.&nbsp; She loved the compliments on her little red car. Betty was devoted to her family, her community and her church and will be dearly missed. 
 Betty was preceded in death by her husband Arthur of 64 years, son 
Terry, son Lee, her parents, Clyde and Delilah Panter, brothers, Duane 
(Pete) and Dee Panter, Arthur’s parents, Ed and Neva Smith, Arthur’s 
sister Ilene and husbands Gerald Wagenblast and Millard Voorhees, 
Arthur’s brother Bennie and his wife Lois and nephew Steven Panter. 
 She leaves to morn son Dail and wife Kathy of Clay Center, KS, son 
Stan and wife Kim of Smith Center, KS, daughter-in-law Deb Smith of 
Smith Center, sister-in-law Roseanne Panter of Elkhart, KS, 10 
grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild, 
along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 11, 
2023, at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, 113 S. Madison St., Smith Center, 
KS, with pastor Lance McDowell officiating.&nbsp; Visitation will be held on 
Friday, February 10, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with the family 
present to greet friends.&nbsp; Burial will take place in Pleasant View 
Cemetery, Athol, KS.&nbsp;

Betty Jane Smith

Joan Marie Knoll, 89, of Norton, Kansas, passed away January 30, 2023,&nbsp; at the Andbe Home. She was born April 14, 1933, in rural Norton County, 
Kansas to Harry and Ruth (Applegate) Meyers.

Joan grew up 
Northwest of Norton and attended rural schools and then graduated from 
Norton Community High School in 1950. She went on to receive her 
bachelor’s and master’s degree in Special Education from Fort Hays State
 University. Joan married Anthony Knoll on August 15, 1952, at the Maple 
Grove Church of the Brethren. They lived in Norton Co. and then moved to
 the farm northwest of Norton in April of 1955 and moved to town in 
1983. She was active in the Brethren Church and First United Methodist 
Church after moving to town. Joan was a member of the Gideons 
International, serving on the state board for two years.

Joan 
began her teaching career in rural Graham County with 1st through 8th 
grade. She later taught at the Lenora elementary school prior to 
transferring to the Norton school district, where she taught 4th and 2nd
 grade as she worked toward getting her master’s degree. Upon receiving
 her master's, she continued teaching special education until her 
retirement in 1982.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, 
Harry and Ruth Meyers; husband, Anthony; children, Teresa Haws and Ray 
Knoll; brothers, Jerry (Sylvia) Meyers and Richard Meyers and sister, 
Carol Putz. She is survived by her sons, Randy Knoll of Norton, KS and 
Stuart (Leigh) Knoll of San Antonio, TX; son-in-law, Richard Haws of 
Bartlesville, OK; granddaughters, Ashley Knoll (Emmanuel) Ekochu of 
Lee’s Summit, MO and Amy (Larry) Tatum of Liberty, MO; sister, Shirley 
(Sherman) Blocher of Lincoln, NE, and sisters-in-law, Janet Meyers of 
Norton, KS and Dorothy Alflin of Puyallup, WA.

A Celebration of 
Life will be held 11:00 am Saturday, February 4, 2023, at the First 
United Methodist Church, Norton. A private family burial was held at the

Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science to hold events across state

A new state program could bring in $2.4 million for Fort
Hays State University students.

The Kansas Comprehensive Grant has been a long-term, needs-based
financial gift to FHSU students. But a recently announced match could allow the
program to benefit an even greater number of students.

The grant is a state-funded award given to students through
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid process and awarded based on a
number of criteria but given to those most in need of a helping hand to achieve
the goal of a Bachelor's Degree.

“This program has been introduced recently to our alumni
community through different mailing pieces,” said Carolyn Tatro, FHSU alumni engagement
strategist. “People might have seen it hit their mailboxes, and it was
mentioned in the latest edition of the Roar magazine.”

“The Kansas Comprehensive Grant is a program that's been
around since I started in financial aid in 2010,” said Chantelle Arnold, director
of financial assistance. “It was funded by the Legislature, and recently, they
have added to the program with this new match component.

“It is a dollar-for-dollar match and could potentially give
us $5 million to award to students.”

According to the FHSU website, to be eligible for the grant,
students must be a full-time Kansas degree-seeking undergraduate resident who
demonstrates a certain need based on the Expected Family Contribution from
FAFSA. 

“The way that the legislature set this up is great because
now we have a little skin in the game,” said Dennis King, FHSU associate vice president of student affairs. “When
you think about it, whenever you can double your money by making a donation and
help students, it’s a wonderful thing.”

He said the support from alumni has an impact on current students
that extends to the entire university and the community.

“That obviously impacts enrollment, that enrollment impacts
the quality of education in a classroom and the community itself,” King said. “It
helps graduation rates. It helps people find jobs and network afterward. So,
this is a win-win from beginning to end.”

The program, he said, also helps support FHSU’s overall strategy
of increasing enrollment as a way to keep tuition lower than other regional institutions,
including offering in-state tuition rates to students in states across the Midwest.

did a big initiative last year to reach out to the surrounding 13 states as
well,” King said. “And so, this is great timing as far as just a complement to
that program.”</a>

To get the full benefit of the match program, the university
needs to raise the full amount possible in donations.

“That's the challenge for all
of us out there, as far as stepping up to make sure that we can match that,”
King said.

“If we
can raise $2.4 million, we can get $2.4 million, and we get $5 million to give
back to students, which is a huge chunk,” Arnold said. “It's also going to our
most needy students, so they should be also getting some federal funds.

“It
would be our hope that we could spread these funds around to get to the most
amount of students and hopefully get at least their tuition paid and possibly
part of their housing paid so that they can come and not have such a burden to
get to Fort Hays and finish their education.”

And unlike
many financial assistance programs, this grant is available to more than just incoming
first-year students.

“Unfortunately,
a lot of our continuing students don't have a lot of opportunities for grants,”
Arnold said. “And so this is a grant that you can get as a junior or a senior
if you share the need, and you get your paperwork done, and we have the funding
available, then you stand a really good chance of being awarded this grant.”

🎙 Kansas grant match helps Fort Hays State students in need

Marjorie Boeckner, age 90, of Hays, Kansas, died January 10, 2023, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was born November 7, 1932, to Mike Loreg and Eva (Cline) Loreg in Codell, Kansas.

She graduated Plainville High School, and later married Dean Boeckner in Newton, Kansas.

Marjorie had a passion for caring for kids of all ages.&nbsp; She enjoyed big family meals and getting together brought her the most joy.&nbsp; She was a parent of her own children, as well as a foster parent for 20 years, taking care of a total of 184 kids, and adopting four.&nbsp; She had also worked at the Hillcrest Cemetery as a bookkeeper in Great Bend and was president of the Paradise Center Cemetery Board.

She is survived by her children, Avea Mahan, Roeland, Park, KS: Daniel Boeckner, Hays, KS; Dean Boeckner, Jr, Hays, KS: Tammie (David) Acheson, Palco, KS; Tanya Boeckner, Hays, KS; and Jessica Boeckner, Hays, KS; sister LaDonna, Wichita, KS; brothers Mike, Hoisington, KS; Dean (Janice), Topeka, KS; and Darrell, (Janice) Wyandotte, MO; eight grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Boeckner, daughter, Thea; her parents, and siblings, Helen, Kathrine, Melvin, Della Mae, Loree, Keith, Dorothy, Joseph and a grandson, Travis Mahan.&nbsp;

Clifton Ray Morgan passed into the heavenly realms on the day of our Lord on December 28, 2022, at the age of 77.

Clifton was born January 16, 1945, to Clifton L. and Susanna (Knowles) Morgan.

Ray was united in marriage to Katherine E. Emmanuel on November 26, 
1966, at the Methodist Church in Phillipsburg. They moved to 
Westminster, Colorado, where he worked for Coors, he then served in the 
Navy from 1969-1977 in which he was stationed in many ports across the 
East Coast.&nbsp; After his service in the Navy, he moved back to the family 
farm in Kansas where he worked for Tamko in Phillipsburg Ks.&nbsp; Ray 
decided after working at Tamko that he would go back to college and get 
his Bachelor's Degree.&nbsp; In 1989 Ray and Family moved to Hays, Ks where 
he managed a video arcade, in which he became the district manager.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
Later in his life, he would become a teacher at Northwest Kansas 
Technical College in which he retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister Carol Sue; and his wife Katherine.

Clifton Ray is survived his four children Stacey Walczak (Michael), 
Richard (Sharla), Anthony (Karen), and Andrew (Tricia). He is also 
survived by six grandchildren and a brother Richard Morgan and wife 
Joyce of Phillipsburg.

Ray will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.&nbsp;

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2023 in 
the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pat Allen 
officiating. Inurnment will follow in West Cedar Cemetery, Phillips 
County, KS.

Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Bradley Wayne Sjoholm, 41, of Quinter, Kansas, passed away on December 12, 2022, with&nbsp;immediate family at bedside after complications due to organ failure.

Brad was born on July 18, 1981, in Hoisington, Kansas, to John and Judy (Harris) Sjoholm.

Brad always had a smile on his face and was generous with his time, hard work, and his huge heart. He enjoyed the outdoors, tinkering with machinery, working with his hands, and being&nbsp;with friends and family. Brad had a tender heart for those he loved and a strong love for all&nbsp;animals.

He attended elementary school in Hoisington and completed his education in Hays, Kansas.

He continued on to get his associates degree in electrical technology in Beloit, Kansas. Brad resided in Ellis, Park, and finally in Quinter, Kansas.

Brad is survived by his parents of Hays, brother Kyle (Tricia) Sjoholm of St. Louis, MO; sister Kate (Lane) Hensley of McPherson, KS; Uncle Terry and Aunt Nancy Hopp, of Marquette, KS; and cousins: Jennifer (Curt) Isernhagen, St. Paul, MN; Brian (Kendra) Hopp, McPherson, KS, and Amanda (Josh) McMahan, McPherson, KS. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Aunt Suzi Gruber, and cousin Jeff Hopp.

Graveside services will be held at Elim Lutheran Cemetery in Marquette, KS, at a future date.

Donors can participate in several fundraisers during the next couple of weeks to help the United Way reach its annual fundraising goal.

The United Way has brought back its Dine Out Days Raffle. Three buckets of gift cards will be given away with each bucket containing at least $400 of gift cards to area eateries. In all, $1,600 in gift cards were donated for the project.

"Those are donated by businesses and individuals," said Erica Berges, United Way director. "We are very appreciative of how the restaurants really get behind this all the years we have had it."

Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Berges said the local campaign is about 50 percent to its goal, but many businesses have yet to turn in their pledges.

Donors have until the end of January to make their donations and pledges.

"We need everyone's help to reach that goal," Berges said. "Any amount, it doesn't matter. Nothing is too small."

Donors have multiple ways they can give. They can go to the <a href="https://www.liveunited.us/">United Way website</a> and click on the donate button. One-time donations, monthly donations or purchase round-up options are available.

The round-up option automatically rounds up your purchases to the next dollar and transfers the change to United Way as a donation. Donors can set a maximum amount they wish to donate in this manner.

United Way sets holiday fundraisers, halfway to campaign goal

Options Domestic and Sexual Violence Services has seen an increase in requests for services during the last year and is seeking community assistance during its annual fundraising campaign to meet those increased needs.

"We were really predicting that our numbers this year would level off and go back to our pre-pandemic numbers," said Jennifer Hecker, Options executive director. "That has just not happened. They have continued to grow."

Options has seen significant increases in services during the last two years.

It provided 60 percent more services in 2021 than it did the previous years and has provided more than 60 percent more services in 2022 compared to 2021.

The average number of bed nights at the Options shelter is about 1,200 This year to date, the shelter has provided 4,800 bed nights. Hecker said she anticipates the shelter will hit 5,000 bed nights before the end of the year.

The shelter services women, children and men.

"It's anyone who needs a place to stay because they are experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking or family violence," Hecker said.

Options covers an 18-county area of northwest Kansas that includes Ellis County.

Hecker said she thought Options was seeing increases in its numbers both because of an increase in violent acts as well as a greater awareness of the services that are available.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation recently released its 2021 domestic violent report, which showed a statewide increase in violent crime.

"We spent a lot of energy and time doing advertising and other community awareness during COVID because we saw those numbers increasing not just in Ellis County, but in other counties we serve and nationwide," Hecker said.

"I think COVID kind of pulled the Band-Aid off of America's dirty little secret — the harm that happens behind closed doors that we don't often hear about."

Options also provided new avenues to access its services. The agency added a mobile office that travels to all 18 counties in its service area. The agency also has a texting hotline and chat hotline in addition to its phone hotline. Text the word "Hope" to 847411.

The 24-Hour Helpline is 800-794-4624. The chat and other information can be accessed on the Options website at <a href="https://help4abuse.org/">https://help4abuse.org/</a> All of the helplines and chats are manned 24/7, 365 days a year.

Options also launched an app called "My Mobile Options," which is free for download for Apple or Android devices.

Difficult economic times can also be stressors that can result in domestic or family violence, Hecker said. Economic stress tends to grow during the holidays.

"Every family struggles to provide gifts and things like that for their family. If they are unemployed or underemployed that can compound that stress even more," Hecker said. 

In families in which violence has occurred coming together at Christmas can be triggering, she said.

Hecker said seeing signs of domestic abuse in friends and family members can be difficult. Unhealthy control can be one of those signs.

Individuals who seemed stressed about having to be home at a certain time or their partner is going to anger can be a sign of domestic abuse. Other signs can be someone who doesn't have control over their money, jealousy, a partner demanding to see a partner's phone or a partner expecting to listen in on phone conversations.

"Holidays are so stressful and a time when so many people tell victims to not leave now and to wait until the holiday is over. Don't ruin the holiday by leaving," Hecker said. "We tell people give yourself the gift of safety this holiday season.

"If you are fearful or you know someone who is, have them call Options, and we will get them the holiday help they need."

Options' Light of Hope annual fundraising campaign helps Options fill the funding gaps to provide services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking.

The campaign goes through the end of the year. Donors have many options for giving. They can go to Options' website, donate by sending a check to or drop it off in person at the Options office at 2716 Plaza Ave., Hays, KS 67601

This year's campaign goal is $202,000. Options is about $15,000 away from reaching that goal.

"That money goes to help victims and survivors get the services they need and fills the gaps that our state and federal grants don't fill," Hecker said.

It helps pay for survivors to get hotel rooms if Options' shelter is full. It can be used to help survivors replace driver's licenses or other important documents they had to leave behind when they fled or were taken from them. It can also provide funds for the therapy dog, or child and youth services programs, among other programs.

🎙 Options sees dramatic increase in services for second straight year

Bernice Marie (Basgall) Herrman, age 87&nbsp;joined the Lord,&nbsp;Saturday, December 3, 2022,&nbsp;at home with family by her side.&nbsp;

Bernice was born October 16,&nbsp;1935,&nbsp;in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;She was the daughter of Clarence and Regina (Degenhardt) Basgall.&nbsp;She was the oldest of six siblings, and she&nbsp;attended Marian Girls Catholic High School in Hays.&nbsp;

On October 15th, 1952, she confessed her love to LeRoy Herrman, her soul mate.&nbsp;Later, they ventured to San Diego, California for Leroy’s Marine Corps military career.&nbsp;They lived on the base for about three years, where Bernice had her daughter,&nbsp;Brenda.&nbsp;They eventually moved back to Hays, Kansas and had their son,&nbsp;Roger.&nbsp;&nbsp;

They built their first home on Eisenhower and eventually built their final home on MacArthur in Hays.She&nbsp;was a devout Catholic and raised her children and grandchildren in the catholic church.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bernice was typically known around Hays as “Bernice the Boss” for her many successful business adventures with her husband Leroy, “Herrman the German”.

Bernice and LeRoy began their adventure with Herrman Electric, where Bernice was the secretary and took care of the finances, and LeRoy was the handyman/electrician.&nbsp;They had many business dealings after Herrman Electric.&nbsp;&nbsp;Next came Shady Rest Campgrounds, and then Camper &amp; RV &nbsp;Center.&nbsp;They eventually added Great Plains&nbsp;Chrysler&nbsp;Plymouth &amp; Dodge dealership to Camper &amp; RV Center.&nbsp;Bernice was the heart and soul of all of their business’.

She made sure things were done the right way!.&nbsp;Bernice received the award of “Business&nbsp;Woman of the&nbsp;Year” in 1980.&nbsp;One of Bernice’s favorite past times was polka dancing and following her husband throughout his musical career with “The Herrmanette’s." She had many hobbies like, cooking, sewing, and traveling in their camper.&nbsp;Bernice and LeRoy enjoyed going to south Texas in the wintertime to stay warm.They spent many years going on weekend trips to the lake with family and friends.&nbsp;During her down time, she would like to go on “joy rides” in one of their many convertibles (typically to get ice cream).&nbsp;Mostly, Bernice was a very loving mother, grandmother, and sister.

Bernice belonged to many organizations,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Hays&nbsp;VFW&nbsp;Auxiliary&nbsp;and American Legion&nbsp;Auxiliary, Kansas Association for the&nbsp;Blind and Visually&nbsp;Impaired, the&nbsp;Business&nbsp;Women’s&nbsp;Association, and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Bernice’s surviving family include her&nbsp;two&nbsp;children, Brenda Herrman Morrissey of Hays,&nbsp;KS;&nbsp;Roger Herrman of&nbsp;Hays KS;&nbsp;her&nbsp;two grandchildren,&nbsp;Jacine&nbsp;Morrissey and Spencer (Megan Press) Herrman;&nbsp;her&nbsp;five great grandchildren, Lindsey Morrissey;&nbsp;Jaide&nbsp;Herrman;&nbsp;Brayden Grizzle;&nbsp;Scarlett&nbsp;Herrman;&nbsp;Adaline Herrman;&nbsp;her&nbsp;one sister, Lillian Basgall;&nbsp;her&nbsp;four brothers, Alfred;&nbsp;Thomas;&nbsp;Theodore;&nbsp;and Darrell (Carelyn) Basgall. &nbsp;

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents,&nbsp;Clarence and Regina Basgall;&nbsp;her husband LeRoy;&nbsp;and her niece,&nbsp;Tiffany Basgall.

Bernice Marie (Basgall) Herrman

Elsie Beiser, age 98, of Ellis, Kansas passed away Friday, November 18, 2022, at Hays Medical Center. She was born August 25, 1924, north of Ellis, Kansas, in rural Ellis County to Henry and Jennie (Zachman) Keller.&nbsp;

Elsie was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church north of Ellis. Her confirmation was the last class taught in German. She attended the Cottonwood Grove one room country school and graduated from Ellis High School in 1943.

Elsie married Roy “Buck” Huffman August 22, 1948, and they had two children, Phyllis and Phil. After Roy passed away Elsie married and was preceded in death by two husbands, David Ehrlich, and Dale Beiser.

Elsie’s remarkable life had her living through WWII, dust storms, the depression, and the Ellis flood of 1957.&nbsp; She and her husband Roy owned Ellis Liquor Store for many years. She worked with the Census, was involved with the Russell VFW, and loved to campaign for Bob Dole. She was also part of the Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion.

Elsie was known by many, never knew a stranger and was one to never judge. She loved her family and took great joy in the holidays, birthdays, and activities with all of them. She had many hobbies such as cooking, canning, dancing, sports, a good debate over politics, traveling to the Ozarks and enjoying the outdoors and simply being the life of the party. &nbsp;

Elsie was a part of several families lives and loved them all. On Memorial Day she often joked she had to pack a lunch to get to every grave and make sure they were properly decorated. Elsie’s strong faith and caring heart allowed her to truly be a lifelong caretaker of many family members and friends.&nbsp;

Elsie is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Werger and husband Gregg of Casper, Wyoming; her son, Phil Huffman of Dodge City, Kansas; grandchildren, Sarah Brogden of Ellis, Kassie Cobley of Denver and Megan (Cole) Gerlach of Scott City. Elsie had a special place in her heart for Mike and Sharon Weigel and their three daughters, Sheldon Bennett, Justine Evans and Graci Weigel as well as numerous great grandchildren and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Roy Huffman, David Ehrlich and Dale Beiser; brothers, Wendell, Gerhard, Henry, and Reinhard Keller; and sisters, Hilda Young and Johanna Myers.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Ellis.

Visitation will be Tuesday 9 AM - 11 AM at the church.

Elsie Beiser

Rodney Eugene Smith, 67, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, 
November 6, 2022. He was born on September 9, 1955, in Smith Center, 
Kansas, to Harley and Cleora (Bliss) Smith. Rodney grew up in 
Osborne, KS he was on the wrestling team and in band. Rodney enjoyed the
 small town life running around with his twin brother Roger and little 
brother Rick and working at the town grocery store. The three of them 
spent countless hours in the summers at the Osborne City pool. He 
graduated from Osborne High School in 1973. His mother and father were 
very proud of him, and he was thankful for the loving home and life he 
had growing up. He always knew he wanted to be a Pharmacist and 
attended the University of Kansas Pharmacy School graduating in 1978. 
His first job as a pharmacist was at Dillon’s Pharmacy in Lawrence on 
Massachusetts street. Work took him to many towns in Kansas as a 
Pharmacist. In 1981 he was working at the Dillons Pharmacy in Salina, KS
 when he met his soon to be wife, Roxanne, at a Dillon’s picnic. She 
worked at another Dillons in Salina, where he came in to ask Roxanne out
 for the first time for a ride on his motorcycle. The two were 
married in 1982 in Salina at the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church. 
They welcomed their first son, Christopher in 1984 in Lawrence, KS. In 
1988, they welcomed their daughter, Abby in Lawrence, KS. They made 
Lawrence their home and Rodney opened the Medicine Shoppe on 
Massachusetts Street. Life took them to Hutchinson, KS in 1991 
where Rodney owned the Medicine Shoppe on Main Street. They raised their
 children in Hutchinson until Abby graduated high school in 2007, when 
they made their way back to Lawrence where both Chris and Abby attended 
his alma mater Kansas University, which made Rodney so proud. Chris went
 on to get his PhD in Chemistry from University of Minnesota and is the 
head of a lab in the Kansas City area. Abby went on to become a Dental 
Hygienist and has furthered her career in Dental software technology. Rodney
 touched many lives and filled many scripts over the years, and had 
heart warming stories about the many people that touched his life in 
pharmacy. Rodney worked up until the day he passed as a remote pharmacy 
consultant for a non profit, Family Healthcare Center in Kansas City, 
KS. His passion became helping the underserved and he was able to give 
back by helping to start 340B Pharmacies for the uninsured. Rodney
 was an avid golfer up until he got pancreatic cancer. He has fond 
memories golfing with his father Harley, son Chris, brother Roger and 
nephews Jared, Ryan and Andrew and his lifelong Salina golf buddies. 
Rodney had 2 impressive hole in one’s throughout his golfing career. Rodney
 was a diehard Kansas Jayhawk fan, loved all things basketball and 
football at KU. He loved his Chiefs, and grew a love for the Oklahoma 
State Cowboys after his daughter Abby married her husband Derek that ran
 cross country and track there. Rodney was so proud of Chris’s wife Linh, becoming a pharmacist in his footsteps at KU. Rodney followed his dad Harley’s footsteps to become a Mason and was a Master Mason of the Masonic temple in Hutchinson, KS. Rodney
 was a jokester, could never remember the entire joke when he repeated 
it, which made his family and friends laugh even harder, he was often 
the brunt of jokes and that’s the way he liked it! Rodney was the
 grandpa that got down on the ground with his grandkids and would sit 
and play with them for hours. One of Abby and Chris’s fondest memories 
as children was Rodney telling them his own version of jack and the 
beanstalk as a bedtime story. It always ended in laughter and tears the 
way he told it. Rodney could not wait to be with his mother, Cleora in heaven. He talked about her every day. Rodney
 is survived by his father, Harley Smith of Osborne, KS; loving wife, 
Roxanne Smith, children, Chris (Linh &amp; Aiden) Smith; Abby (Derek, 
Lucy &amp; Drew) Tate, all of Olathe, KS. Brother, Roger (Neta, Amanda, 
Jared, Mark, Graham, Elia, Molly) Smith of Topeka, KS; Brother, Rick 
(Dee, Ryan, Holly, Andrew, Nomi, Tanner, Sammy, Heidi, Presley, Violet,

Fort Hays State University’s Admissions Office and the Department of Teacher Education recently hosted the fourth annual Future Educators Day. This event brings together area high school students interested in the teaching profession and the best teachers in Kansas. It aims to inspire the next generation of teachers through personal interactions, discussions, and examples of dynamic teaching. &nbsp;

This year’s event brought a record-breaking 108 students, numerous teachers, and other guests from 25 area high schools to the FHSU campus. These potential future educators, high school juniors and seniors, had the opportunity to observe and interact with the Kansas Teacher of the Year (KTOY) &nbsp;team, learn about teacher preparation at FHSU, meet with department representatives and explore their programs, as well as participate in scholarship drawings.

Dr. Chris Jochum, chair of FHSU’s Department of Teacher Education, was excited to host so many area students in person this year.&nbsp;

“It is great to have so many students from such a variety of schools visit this year,” Jochum said. “Events like this - along with the wonderful turnout - show that we not only have students in Kansas who want to go into the teaching profession but that they are being encouraged to do so by their own teachers.”&nbsp;

Dr. Paul Adams, Dean of the College of Education at FHSU, began the day by welcoming everyone. Adams recounted some of his own adventures since becoming an educator.

“One of the greatest things we get out of being a teacher is the opportunity to grow,” Adams said as he recounted several instances of teachers and the way they touch so many lives.

The 2023 Kansas Teacher-of-the-Year, Brian Skinner, provided the keynote address, followed by an interactive presentation from the Kansas Teacher-of-the-Year (KTOY) team centered around the theme, “Education is… what we make it.”&nbsp;

Other activities at the event included opportunities for visitors to interact with current education majors. This question-and-answer session allowed potential future educators a real behind-the-scenes look at the education program at FHSU. Additionally, students were able to learn about FHSU programs, majors, and other campus opportunities.

The final activity of the day included a drawing for scholarships. The FHSU School of Education awarded five $250 and three $500 scholarships to area students.&nbsp;

Younker on August 22, 1949, in Victoria.&nbsp;He preceded her in death on September&nbsp;24, 2020.&nbsp;She started her teaching career at Severin and Spring Hill Schools.&nbsp; After the birth of her second child and move to the family farm, she managed the farm activities and took care of her family.&nbsp;In 1968, Mary returned to college to get her degree in Education with an emphasis in Library Science. &nbsp;After graduation, she taught at St Mary’s Catholic School in Ellis, Schoenchen Elementary School,&nbsp;and&nbsp;St Joseph’s Catholic School in Hays. &nbsp;She also served as the school librarian at St Joseph’s Catholic School.She was a talented seamstress. &nbsp;She enjoyed sewing and making&nbsp;quilts. &nbsp;She made 50+ quilts which she gifted to her children, grandchildren and friends. &nbsp;She also loved to cook large meals for her family and church functions. &nbsp;She was instrumental in cooking and leading the annual Fall Feast at the Antonino Church.She was a member of Our Lady of Help of Christians Catholic Church, Antonino. &nbsp;She served as Treasurer for the Christian Mothers&nbsp;organization&nbsp;for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was a club leader for the Ellis County Good Hope 4-H Club. &nbsp;She volunteered at the Gift Shop at Hays Medical Center.Survivors include her two sons, David Younker, Hays, KS and Dale Younker and wife, Paula, Jetmore, KS; her two daughters, Dianne DeGood and husband, Alan, Goddard, KS; and Donna Myers and husband, Patrick, Lawrence, KS; her brother, Fr. Harvey Dinkel O.F.M. Cap. Victoria, KS; her two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Dinkel, Victoria, KS; Twila Griffin, Weatherford, OK; her brother-in-law, Delbert Rohr, Wichita, KS; her six grandchildren, Kerrie Mayans (Jason), Melissa Opbroek (Aaron), Brandy Leon (Nick), and Julia Myers, Brad Younker (Jessica), and Brian Younker (Carmon); her 15 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Mayans, Madeline Mayans, Cecilia Mayans, Charlotte Mayans, Carley Younker, Camryn Younker, Leyah Younker, Lyndi Younker, Leesey Younker, Cadynce Leon, McKenna Leon; Alex Mayans, Carter Opbroek, Paxton Leon and Clayton Younker.She was preceded in death by her parents; her eleven sisters, Fidelis Dinkel; Julitta Dechant; Bertha Prewo; Regina Dechant; Sr. Francis Rose Dinkel C.S.A.; Irene Scruggs; Viola Mary Dinkel; Melinda Griebel; Viola Richmeier; Sr. Paul Ann Dinkel C.S.A.; and Rita Rohr; her four brothers, Hilarious Dinkel; Clarence Dinkel; Edward Dinkel; and George Dinkel; and her two great grandchildren, &nbsp;Lakin Younker and Olivia Mayans.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, &nbsp;November 5, 2022, at Our Lady Help of Christians&nbsp; Catholic&nbsp;Church, Antonino with Fr. Harvey Dinkel O.F.M. Cap and Fr.&nbsp;Curtis Carlson O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Burial will be at Our&nbsp;Lady Help of Christians Cemetery, Antonino.&nbsp;A vigil service and&nbsp;an Antonino Christian Mothers&nbsp;rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd&nbsp;Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. &nbsp;&nbsp;Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, At, Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M.
