The Fight Back Tour features Democratic legislators traveling across Kansas to meet with constituents, highlight legislative priorities, and discuss ways to protect and expand the rights and opportunities of working families. HAYS, Kan. — For the first time since joining the Fort Hays
State University football team, Gaven Haselhorst is starting a season fully
healthy. After transferring from Kansas State following the 2021 season, the
former Hays High standout has been plagued by injuries.

He played in eight games, starting in seven, as a redshirt
freshman in 2022 before an injury ended his season early. The following season
in 2023, he was sidelined after just three starts and required surgery.
Haselhorst returned last season to play in all 11 games, making seven starts at
defensive end. He finished the season third on the team in tackles for loss
(6.0) and second in sacks (3.5), earning him a spot on the All-MIAA Third Team.

"This was my first spring ball at Fort Hays,"
Haselhorst said. "That was already huge for me to get through. This camp,
I'm feeling pretty good, so I'm just building on the little things I need to
work on, and I think it's helping a lot."

Haselhorst credits the extra practice time this spring with
elevating his game.

"I'd say working on the run game, working on my hand
placement and dropping down lower and playing with more leverage," he
said. "Then in the pass game, just working on my speed rush and stuff like
that."

The Tigers' defense is looking to replace seven starters
from a unit that led the MIAA last season, giving up less than 17 points per
game. Despite the inexperience, Haselhorst is confident in his defensive line.

"I feel like we're pretty deep in the defensive line
room," Haselhorst said. "We just have to stay on top of our bodies
and, like I said, keep working each day."

This season will reunite Haselhorst with former Hays High
teammate Gavin Meyers, who is in his first season with the Tigers after also
transferring from K-State. The two were a disruptive force for the Indians in
high school.

"It means a lot, man," Haselhorst said. "We
were really tight in high school, so this is awesome getting back together and
hopefully making some huge plays and making an impact on this defense
together."

🏈 Haselhorst healthy and ready to lead FHSU defense

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Former Fort Hays State running back Shane Watts was signed by the New England Patriots of the National Football League on Tuesday. Watts is the first FHSU player to be signed by an NFL team since 2019 when Doyin Jibowu signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent. The Tigers still have one other active player in the NFL, Nathan Shepherd of the New Orleans Saints, who enters his eighth year in the NFL in 2025 after being drafted by the New York Jets in 2018.

Just a few weeks back, Watts signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and was a member of the team's practice squad for a week before being released. He was the second Tiger to be signed by a CFL team in 2025, joining wide receiver Jayden Horace. Watts now looks for a chance with the Patriots, who are one game into the preseason. Their next preseason contest is against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, August 16 in Minneapolis.

Watts played four years at Fort Hays State and wrapped his collegiate career with All-America honors as one of the top running backs in NCAA Division II in 2024. He was an All-America Second Team selection in 2024 by three separate organizations, including the D2CCA, Associated Press (AP), and Don Hansen Football Committee. He was also named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Team. He was an All-MIAA First Team selection as an all-purpose back, finishing the year with 1,303 rushing yards and 449 receiving yards for 1,752 all-purpose yards. He scored 17 touchdowns for the season, including 13 rushing and four receiving.

By the end of the 2024 season, Watts ranked fourth nationally in all-purpose yards per game (160.8), fourth in total rushing yards, sixth in rushing yards per game (118.5), seventh in scoring (9.3 points per game), and eighth in total touchdowns. He became the first FHSU player in program history to rush for 200 or more yards in consecutive games, going for 201 against Missouri Southern on October 26 and then 250 against Emporia State on November 2.

Watts spent the first two years of his collegiate career as a defensive back with the Tigers, recording 14 tackles, before transitioning to the offensive side of the ball as a running back in 2023. In his two years as a running back, Watts produced a total of 1,979 rushing yards and 606 receiving yards with 23 total touchdowns.

Grow Hays welcomes the public to the Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center grand opening and ribbon cutting at&nbsp; 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29. The Community Center is located at 2510 Canterbury Drive, Hays.

The Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center is a visionary more than 14,300 square foot facility designed to serve as a multigenerational hub for the Hays community. This state-of-the-art center is also home to Bright Minds Academy's third childcare location and the Hays Senior Center, providing essential services and fostering a sense of community for residents of all ages.&nbsp;

"We are excited to see this project come to completion," said Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, Inc. "The Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center will be a cornerstone for Hays, offering valuable resources and a welcoming space for both our youngest and senior citizens."

The ceremony will feature remarks from key community leaders and project stakeholders, celebrating the collaborative effort that has brought this project to fruition.

Dorothy McDermeit, 93, Salina, Kansas, formerly of La Crosse, Kansas passed away on August 7th, 2025 at the Salina Regional Hospital, Salina Kansas. She was born March 8, 1932 in La Crosse Kansas, the daughter of Leonard and Matilda Schmidt. She was a resident of Salina, Kansas for over 20 years, moving from La Crosse.

On November 5, 1952 she married Jerome Legleiter. Together they had seven children. They were business owners beginning with the purchase of the La Crosse Nursing Home. Later, they built and owned the J&amp;D (Jerome and Dorothy) Tastee Freeze in La Crosse. After that they acquired the Starlight Club and Lounge, along with the Bowling Alley in La Crosse, KS. He proceeded her in death on November 5, 1977.

On August 3, 1979 she married Clyde McDermeit, whom she met at a Bowling Tournament. He brought three more children into the family. Together they continued to run the business until selling it to open a smaller mom and pop restaurant at the Mini Mall. After 10 years, the Starlight Club was returned to them, and with a remodel, it became the Frontier Lounge. They then ran it until selling it and retiring. In retirement they enjoyed traveling the Country and being snowbirds. During this time, she would learn new talents becoming an artist in beautiful oil paintings, foil art pictures, and jewelry making. He proceeded her in death on June 1, 2015.

She was a lifetime member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary, St. Michaels Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, The First Ladies Club of Salina, and The Red Hat Club.

Survivors include, Daughters Kathy Whitis (Doug) Salina, KS, Sheryl Resley, Wichita, KS, Lisa Leikam (Allan) Manhattan, KS, and sons Gary Legleiter, Salina, KS, and Eric Legleiter, Salina, KS. Three stepchildren: Nancy (Mike) Devine, Millersville, Maryland, Scott (Opal) McDermeit, Goddard, KS, and Cheryl Henderson, Boerne, TX. Grandchildren are Chris Leikam (Ali), Wamego, Colton Leikam (Darissa) Junction City, KS, Genna Resley (Colby), Wichita, KS, Briana Resley (Colby) Wichita, Ks, Whitney Legleiter, Wichita, Blake Legleiter, Wichita, Andrew Legleiter, Montana. Step-grandchildren are Katie Devine (Jared), Washington DC, Brian Devine, Virginia, Jennifer Slaughter (Aaron) Mulvane, KS, Justin Henderson, (Brittany) MO, Courtney Church (Scott), Borne TX. She has 13 great grandchildren. One brother, John Schmidt, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, her parents, two sons, Ron Legleiter and Len Legleiter, two grandsons, Brady Whitis and Jamie Whitis, a great grandson, a sister, Betty Schmidt, and a son-in-law Brian Resley.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 918 Lincoln St., La Crosse, KS 67548, with Fr. Stephen Dabanka officiating. Burial will follow at La Crosse Cemetery.

The Hays Fire Department conducted a wildfire summit to prepare for future blazes by drawing lessons from the region’s past disasters.

Hays Fire Chief Ryan Hagans said the summit consisted of sharing local expertise, a field trip and simulations to address potential threats in partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

"The main goal was to help us find the tools and resources to build a partnership within the community, and help spread the word on potential hazards that a wildfire brings when it impacts urban and developed areas," Hagans said.

The summit was a two-day wildfire risk workshop on Friday and Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hays.

SimTables, or simulation tables, let participants model fire spread using real topography and wind data. The projections recreated past incidents, including the 2021 Four County Fire, and hypothetical scenarios for firefighters to study.

Firefighters shared their experiences and insights from responding to the Four County Fire, discussing factors that allowed it to spread as fast as it did, such as wind speeds.

"When this started, we had zero visibility in Hays. I was driving around when it progressed and everything browned out," one firefighter said, referring to the Four County Fire.

Firefighters estimated from the projection that fast-moving fires could sweep through Hays in roughly 10 minutes.

The summit also included an outdoor session near the Sternberg Museum to examine grasses, trees and urban-wildland risks. Hagans said the fire department gained a deeper understanding of fire behavior and plans to implement measures.

He said the department will further assess the city for wildfire threats and educate the public.

"There are several areas throughout the outer edges of town that we'd like to evaluate what fuel loads they have and what each individual neighborhood has unique to them," Hagans said. "Steps they can take to help prevent or slow down the spread of a grass fire coming and help protect their homes as well."

Hagans advises regularly clearing dead limbs, trimming trees and bushes, and mowing grass near fences as precautions.

The event also partnered with the Kansas State Forest Service, International Association of Fire Fighters, International Association of Fire Chiefs and National Volunteer Fire Council.

NWester: Hays hosts Wildland Resilience Summit to boost fire preparedness

A Hays man was arraigned on Aug. 4 in Ellis County District Court on charges of alleged aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and interference with a law enforcement officer.

At about 12:26 a.m. on March 1, Hays Police responded to a report of possible aggravated battery in the 500 block of West Seventh Street in the back alley of Chuck's bar, according to Hays Police.

A Hays man was allegedly accosted at gunpoint by two male suspects and taken to an area between houses, where he was physically assaulted and pistol-whipped, according to Hays police.

According to Hays police, the victim was allegedly stripped of his clothing, except for his underwear, and robbed of his wallet and phone.

Isaiah Tai Simpson was arrested and charged with&nbsp;alleged aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Simpson's bond was initially set at $350,000.

Simpson's defense attorney, Cheryl Ann Stewart, requested a reduction in bond on Aug. 4, but District Judge Curtis Brown denied the motion.

At the same hearing, Simpson also waived his right to a speedy trial.

Simpson's jury trial has been set for Jan. 20. Pre-trial motions will be at 9 a.m. Dec. 2.

MANHATTAN – The Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition (KBC), with support from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, awarded over $9,000 in educational scholarships to support individuals to provide lactation support in their communities, including in Hays.

In Kansas, nearly 90% of families choose to breastfeed. Yet, breastfeeding rates amongst communities of color and rural communities are lower than the state average.

The KBC is committed to addressing racial and geographic inequities in breastfeeding by identifying and supporting breastfeeding advocates in new and innovative ways. 

In alignment with this goal, the KBC is pleased to award $9,500 in scholarships to support 11 aspiring lactation support providers in Atchison, Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Kansas City, Lawrence (2), Salina, Topeka, and Wichita (2).

These individuals provided written statements sharing their vision and passion for helping diverse families. They were selected by the review committee for their commitment to supporting their communities by pursuing further education in the lactation field.

“Breastfeeding is important for the health and well-being of both the parent and the child. We are excited to work with these individuals to build a diverse lactation support workforce so families in Kansas can receive culturally congruent care,” said Stephanne Rupnicki, Chair of the KBC Board of Directors and Co-Founder of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Breastfeeding Coalition.

The KBC will continue to support these scholarship recipients in the pursuit of their goals. The KBC hopes to find more ways to contribute to equity in breastfeeding for all Kansans.

The Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition is a non-profit organization that works collaboratively to promote, support, and protect breastfeeding to improve the health and well-being of Kansas families.

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State is receiving votes in the 2025 AFCA Preseason Top 25 Poll for NCAA Division II, released on Monday (Aug. 11). The MIAA has three teams ranked among the Top 25, including two in the Top 10, and FHSU joins Northwest Missouri State among the receiving votes list to give the MIAA five teams referenced in the first release of the poll. FHSU was fourth-highest vote receiving team outside the Top 25.

On paper, the Tigers look to have a strong strength of schedule going into the 2025 season. The Tigers will face a pair of preseason nationally ranked teams in non-conference play before facing three ranked MIAA teams later in the season. The three ranked MIAA teams include No. 5 Central Oklahoma, No. 9 Pittsburg State, and No. 22 Central Missouri.

Three of FHSU's first four games are against teams in the AFCA Preseason Top 25. Angelo State will come to Hays with a No. 13 national ranking for the season opener on August 28. A week later FHSU heads out west to face a CSU Pueblo squad that holds a preseason No. 6 ranking. In week four, FHSU faces Pittsburg State.

Central Oklahoma won the MIAA title last year at 8-1 and went 12-2 overall, while Pittsburg State placed second at 7-2 in MIAA action and went 8-3 overall. Both made the seven-team super regional field of the NCAA playoffs. FHSU (8-3 overall) and Central Missouri (9-3 overall) tied for third in conference play at 6-3, but FHSU won the head-to-head meeting in Hays. FHSU hosts UCO and UCM in home games this year.

Fort Hays State goes into its season opener with the same role it held last year, a receiving votes team looking to knock off a nationally ranked team. Angelo State came to Hays in the season opener last year with a No. 24 ranking and FHSU won that contest 21-7. Angelo State went 0-2 in non-conference play in 2024 before running the table in their conference (9-0) and making the NCAA playoffs. The Rams fell in the opening round of the playoffs in Super Region 4, making them 0-3 in non-conference games last year.

This year, the contests against Angelo State and CSU Pueblo will be within Fort Hays State's NCAA super region. The MIAA and GAC have now shifted to Super Region 4, while the NSIC moves over to Super Region 3. The MIAA and GAC are now aligned with the Lone Star Conference (LSC) and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Also new this year, the playoff field in each super region expands to eight teams. FHSU likely would have been in the playoffs last year if the eight-team format existed then, as it went into the final game of the 2024 season ranked No. 8 in the super region and just missed a playoff berth.

🏈 Tigers receiving votes in AFCA preseason top 25 poll

Fort Hays State seniors Josh Shaw and John Johnson have been named to the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List for the 2025 season. This is the second-straight year Johnson has been named to this list, while Shaw receives recognition on the list for the first time in his career. Both received All-MIAA honors in 2024, Shaw a first-team selection on the offensive line and Johnson a second-team selection at linebacker.

Shaw and Johnson were two of 11 players in the MIAA named to the watch list. Shaw helped the Tiger offense produce 402 yards per game last season, which ranked 26th in NCAA Division II. FHSU's 30.4 points per game was among the top 40 in NCAA Division II as well. Shaw was one of three Tiger offensive linemen to receive all-conference recognition last year. He is a two-time All-MIAA selection overall.

Johnson is the top returning tackler for a Tiger team that led the MIAA in scoring defense (16.9 ppg) and ranked second in total defense (330.1 yds/game) last year. Battling through an injury issue at one point in the year, he still managed 63 tackles in just eight games, averaging eight per contest. He also had an interception, a blocked kick, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery last year. He is a two-time All-MIAA selection as well.

Therese M Morgan, age 71, of Hays, KS, passed away on Thursday,
July 31, 2025 at her home, on the love of her life, Lonnie's birthday. She was
born March 25, 1954 in Russell, KS to George M and Mary Eileen (Martell) Klaus.

She grew up in Hays, KS and graduated from Marian High School in
1972 then attended Fort Hays State University.

She married Lonnie Friend Morgan on May 8, 1982. He preceded her
in death.

Her family includes her sons, Steven (Jolene) Morgan of LaCrosse,
Heath (Michelle) Morgan of LaCrosse, Brothers Ken (Bev) Klaus of Wichita, Glenn
Klaus of Hays, and Greg (Sharon) Klaus of Sublette; Sisters Cindy (Jay)
Schröter of LaCrosse and Gwen (Harold) Honas of Ellis; three grandchildren:
Taylor (Zach) Stejskal of Timken, Hunter (Madison) Morgan of Hays, and Madison
Morgan of LaCrosse; 1 great-granddaughter Elsie Stejskal, and numerous nieces,
nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws Friend and Velma
Morgan, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Graveside services will be held September 6th at 10:30 at
Alexander Cemetery, Alexander, KS with lunch to follow in LaCrosse.

SALINA – The Catholic Foundation for Diocese of Salina (CFDS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Hartman as chief executive officer. Hartman, who has served the foundation since 2021, brings a wealth of experience in fundraising, donor relations, and community building, along with deep ties to the Diocese of Salina.

“Heather has a heart for the Church, a deep love for the people of our diocese, and a gift for building relationships,” said Bishop Jerry Vincke. “I’m grateful for her leadership and excited to see how the Catholic Foundation will continue to grow and serve under her guidance.”

Hartman is a longtime Kansan with over a decade of experience in philanthropy, community foundations, and rural leadership. A former small business owner, she understands the importance of long-term investment and community connection — values that now shape her work in stewarding donor gifts and strengthening the mission of the Church across the Diocese. 

As CEO, she will continue to lead efforts to grow the Foundation’s endowment funds, support parishes and schools, and steward the generosity of donors who believe in the mission of the Catholic Church in north-central and northwest Kansas.

The Foundation is also proud to welcome three new members to its board:

· Jerry Kuckleman of Manhattan, a longtime leader in western Kansas with extensive experience in the beef industry, including his time as president of Innovative Livestock Services.

· Katie Platten of Salina, the foundation’s founding leader and first CEO, who brings valuable experience in organizational leadership and development.

· Mitzi Richards of Manhattan, who brings a wealth of expertise in nonprofit administration through her work with the KSU Foundation and the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.

In addition, Francine Hestermann of Hays has been elected as the new President of the CFDS Board, leading the foundation’s efforts to further its mission. Francine joined the board in 2021.

Catholic Foundation for Diocese of Salina announces new CEO, board leadership

Albert R. Yanke, 92, of WaKeeney, Kansas, passed away on August 9, 2025, at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 3, 1933, in Beaver, Oklahoma, to Robert and Hannah (Kirschman) Yanke.

Albert grew up in the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle and graduated from Follett, Texas High School in 1951. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Panhandle State University in 1956 and then served his country for three years in the United States military. Upon returning, he completed his teaching certificate at Oklahoma State University in 1960. Albert taught in Oklahoma for many years before moving to Kansas, where he managed a large farm. His meticulous record keeping, patience, and keen eye for detail served him well in both teaching and farming.

Albert married Pat Smith on June 11, 1961, and together they built a loving home for their two children, Basil and Gretchen. After Pat’s passing, God blessed him with a second chapter of love when he married Karlynn Fabrizius on November 18, 2000, and his heart and home grew to welcome four more children—Alana, Alan, Amy, Ayn and families.

Albert’s life reflected his strong Christian faith. He taught by example, shared his knowledge generously, and always had time for others. He enjoyed singing with the High Plains Barbershop Chorus, farming (even when it meant battling yucca plants), fishing, hunting, and playing games—especially when he could claim victory over his grandchildren at the board game table.

He was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in WaKeeney.

Albert is survived by his children: Basil (Dea) Yanke of Atchison, KS, Gretchen (Fred) Hafliger of WaKeeney, Alana Kasparek of Oskaloosa, KS, Alan (Laura) Fabrizius of Wilson, KS, Amy (Keith) Wilson of Riverton, KS, and Ayn (Pat) Wilson of Wichita, KS; brothers, Clarence (Marilyn) Yanke of Sunray, TX and Vernon Yanke of Amarillo, TX; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wives; sister, Bonita McKisson; grandson, Christopher Kasparek; and great-grandson, Liam Kasparek.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at 10:30AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Trego Center, with Visitation beginning at 9AM until service time.

Memorials are suggested to Hays High Plains Barbershop Chorus and Zion Lutheran Church and may be sent to Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 723 N. 1st, Stockton, KS 67669.
