Joel Carlton Graham, age 63, of Quinter, “fell asleep in Christ” (1 
Cor. 15:12-20) Tuesday morning, October 13, 2020 at Gove County Medical 
Center in Quinter.&nbsp;

He was born on January 23, 1957 in Quinter, Kansas to Chester Edward and Carlene Edith (McWilliams) Graham.&nbsp;

“Joey,” as he was known by family and friends, made his way through 
the Quinter school system, graduating from QHS in 1975. He enjoyed and 
excelled in bookkeeping and business machine courses. During High School
 and for several years following Joey worked for his Uncle Jimmie Graham
 at the Q-Inn Restaurant eventually as a head cook. He later worked at 
Flex King Industries as an Accounting Assistant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He lived in Denver, Colorado from 1985-1995, working for Hamilton Oil
 Company Inc., a Subsidiary of BHP Petroleum. &nbsp;He thoroughly enjoyed 
this life calling and attained to “Senior Assistant Office Services.” He
 moved back to Quinter in 1995 and spent the remainder of his days there
 in this earthly journey heavenward.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He was spiritually nurtured and led to saving faith by his parents 
and regularly attended Church throughout his entire life. Joey delighted
 in and maintained cordial relations with many fellow believers across 
denominational lines.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Joel is survived by his brother, Ron and wife Gay Graham, of Colorado
 Springs, Colorado and his sister, Marianne and husband Chris Pleich, of
 Lincoln, California and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents.&nbsp;

Due to the current pandemic a private, informal burial will be 
observed by family and friends at the Baker Township Cemetery, East of 
Quinter.&nbsp;

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated later at Sacred Heart Church, Park, Kansas at a convenient date yet to be announced.&nbsp;

Arrangements are under the care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main St., Quinter, Kansas 67752.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As we near the general election, I want to emphasize how important it is for each and every one of us&nbsp;to exercise our right to vote, and to do so, regardless of the incompetence of our current County Clerk’s office.&nbsp;

Yesterday advance ballots began arriving in mailboxes.<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/f9220856-bca1-443f-a89a-7a8dd0ee0bbb"> It was brought to my attention that the Senate races were incorrectly listed.&nbsp;&nbsp;</a>

Instead of a section for Kansas State Senator, there are 2 sections for United States Senator. At the very least, we should have ballots that correctly list the offices for which candidates are running. This can be fixed.&nbsp; As I understand it, the Clerk’s office will have corrected ballots by Monday, October 19. But at what cost? Financially and in confidence? Any remedy now will be at the will of the Secretary of State, who will decide how the incorrect ballots will be handled.&nbsp; It is embarrassing that the state has to specify how to fix the clerk’s error.&nbsp;&nbsp;

After noticing the initial glaring mistake, I looked closer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Another mistake is that this ballot does not include proper verbiage in the President/Vice President section. The United States of America votes using an Electoral College. Your vote is given to electors, who then cast our state’s votes through the electoral college. Kansas Statute 25-616 specifies that the ballot states we are voting for electors, not for the candidate. The Ellis County Clerk and Deputy Clerk have ignored this requirement completely.

Yet another mistake is that the Clerk’s office employees have initialed the bottom of each ballot. This violates Kansas Statute 25-4608, stating that “a unique mark shall be of such a manner so as not to identify any individual ballot and shall be consistent on every ballot delivered to a voter in the voting place”. Kansas guarantees the right to vote in private. By personalizing ballots with, essentially, their names, the clerk’s office has created the possibility that ballots are identifiable. This is completely unacceptable.&nbsp;&nbsp;

At great expense, these errors can be corrected. But, can you have confidence in your clerk’s office when errors are consistently made? Deputy Clerk Bobbi Dreiling recently offered incorrect information on who was able to vote. How many people has she told, incorrectly, over the past 8 years, they could not vote? How much will it cost the county to reprint these ballots, because your elected officials didn’t proofread?&nbsp; In 2018 voting machines were not calibrated, causing election results to be questioned.&nbsp;

At what point do we say enough is enough? It is time to fix an office riddled&nbsp;with mistakes and constant issues.&nbsp;Write in Laura Allen for Ellis County Clerk. We have an opportunity to make sure our Clerk’s office is run with deference to the law and the citizens it serves.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LETTER: Ballot errors call into question election integrity

William “Bill” Weeks, long time resident of Hoxie, passed away on 
Sunday, October 11, 2020, at the Sheridan County Health Complex.  

Bill 
was born on May 23, 1931 on the family farm in rural Sheridan County. 
He was one of seven children born to Clarence and Pearl (Godrey) Weeks. 
He attended country school and graduated from Hoxie High School in 
1949. In 1951, Bill joined the United States Army and was shipped to 
Korea and worked in communications. After serving his country, Bill 
returned home and married Lulu Bethany “Beth” Potterf December 2, 1954, 
in Winona, Kansas. Bill worked for a short while for Beth’s parents in 
Russell Springs, Kansas. When Bill’s father passed away in 1956, Bill, 
being the eldest son, took over the family farm. Bill and Beth were 
blessed with four sons, Larry, Darrell, Dale, and Richard. Beth became 
ill and passed away on September 6, 1991. On August 15, 1997, Bill 
married Edis “Pat” Marcotte. She passed away on September 28, 2017. 
Bill continued to live on the farm until the time of his passing.
 Bill spent his life working as a farmer and rancher. One of his 
favorite times on the farm, was calving time. He so enjoyed seeing the 
newborn calves. He retired from farming in 2001; however, he was always
 a farmer at heart. There was one winter he worked for Foster Lumber 
Company, and he did drive a school bus for USD 412. Bill was always 
tinkering and thinking about things trying to improve them and being a 
welder, welding things. When Bill was not working or “tinkering”, he 
loved to fish and camp. He recently spent a week camping and fishing at
 Sheridan Lake. A highlight during that time was when his son, Dale, 
came to spend the day with him on the lake fishing. Bill was the kind 
of person who made you feel good when you talked with him. He might get
 upset, but he never held a grudge. Bill was a good mentor to his sons 
by demonstrating hard work, being fair, honest and a good man. Bill was
 caring and loving. His family was so important to him, and he loved 
them very much. Bill could be described as caring and loving. He was a
 member of the Hoxie United Methodist Church and believed in the Lord. 
 Bill is survived by his sons, Larry Weeks (Barb) of Victoria, Texas,
 Darrell Weeks of Garden City, Kansas, Dale WeeksSherry of Saint 
Francis, Kansas , and Richard Weeks, Garden City, Kansas; brother, Murl
 Weeks (Anita) of Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Judy Weeks of Hoxie, Kansas; 
 grand- children; numerous great-grand children; three step-sons; four
 step-daughters; and nieces and nephews.
 He was preceded in death by his wives, Beth Weeks and Pat Weeks; 
parents, Clarence and Pearl Weeks; brother, Al Weeks; and sisters, 
Violet Rogers, Marg Thaden, Alice Pratt, and, infant sister, Nellie 
Weeks. 
 A Funeral Service is planned for Friday, October 16, 2020, 11:00 
A.M., at the Hoxie United Methodist Church. Interment will follow the 
service in the Hoxie City Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, 
October 15, 2020, 1:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Mickey-Leopold Funeral 
Home, Hoxie, Kansas with family receiving friends from 5:30 P.M. until

William 'Bill' Weeks

Eulalia Ochs was born December 14, 1931 to Ray and Clementina 
(Depperschmidt) Goetz. She passed away October 13, 2020 at the Gove 
County Long Term Care Facility, Quinter, KS at the age of 88.
 She married Leo Ochs on April 11, 1950 at the Sacred Heart Church in Park. 
 Rooted in her Catholic faith, “Lalia” raised her family of eight 
children - alongside her loving husband - on the family farm near Park, 
Kansas. Her love of God, family, and friends was sewn into each of her 
children as she guided them into their individual lives. She was not 
only a teacher of love and kindness but was also a great role model of 
this for her family. She will always be cherished as a patient teacher 
and sage confidante. 
 Eulalia will be remembered by all for her bright, loving eyes and 
welcoming smile. She loved welcoming visitors into her home, and would 
most often be found either whipping up a delicious meal or snuggled with
 one of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren in the rocking chair. 
She had many talents and hobbies including being a talented seamstress 
and quilter, a wonderful cook and baker. She loved to travel and 
thoroughly enjoyed the trips that she and Leo were able to take. 
 She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her quiet way of giving and supporting unselfishly will live on in our memories. 
 Survivors include her children, Donita Ochs of Hoxie, Sherri (Randy)
 Wolf of Hays, Randy Ochs of Park, Rick (Judy) Ochs of Park, Roger

Eulalia (Goetz) Ochs

John H. Luerman Sr., 88, passed away October 16, 2020, at his home 
in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born March 1, 1932, on the family farm 
north of Susank, the son of Herman C. and Mathilda A. (Meyeres) Luerman.
 John graduated from Hoisington High School in 1950. He later enlisted 
in the United States Air Force serving from 1952 to 1955.

On December 29, 1962, he married Phyllis N. Neal in Hoisington. She preceded him in death just 8 days ago, on October 8, 2020.

A lifetime Hoisington area resident, John was a farmer and also spent
 time working in the oil field. He was a member of the American Legion 
Post #286. John enjoyed bowling and playing cards, and time spent with 
family and friends.

Survivors include three sons; John Luerman and wife Amy of rural 
Susank, Andy Luerman and wife Becky of Ashland, and Billy Luerman of 
Susank; six grandchildren, Shyla Goodnight (Aaron), Anthony Luerman, Jay
 Luerman (Joanna), Shelby Luerman, Damon Luerman (Peanut) and J.J.

north of Susank, the son of Herman C. and Mathilda A. (Meyeres) Luerman.
 John graduated from Hoisington High School in 1950. He later enlisted 
in the United States Air Force serving from 1952 to 1955.On December 29, 1962, he married Phyllis N. Neal in Hoisington. She preceded him in death just 8 days ago, on October 8, 2020.A lifetime Hoisington area resident, John was a farmer and also spent
 time working in the oil field. He was a member of the American Legion 
Post #286. John enjoyed bowling and playing cards, and time spent with

John H. Luerman Sr.

Rose Marie (Beckman) Hartman, 81, passed away from complications of 
COVID-19 on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at the Long Term Care in Quinter, 
KS. She was born on the family farm near Menlo, KS on February 12, 1939,
 the last of nine children of William and Anna (Robben) Beckman. She 
graduated from Menlo High School in 1957 and then ventured off to 
Denver, CO to begin her secretarial career. While on a visit home to see
 her parents, she met Doug Hartman of Grainfield, KS on a blind date set
 up by her brother Dennis. On September 24, 1966, Rose Marie and Doug 
married at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Seguin, KS.

Rose Marie and Doug made their first home on a farm west of Park, KS.
 Over the years they and their growing family lived in Saint Francis, 
KS; Lincoln, NE; Dodge City, KS; Hutchinson, KS; Amarillo, TX; and West 
Des Moines, IA. Rose Marie was a fiercely devoted and supportive mother 
to her sons Christopher, born in 1968, and Gregory, who arrived in 1973.

Following her husband’s death in West Des Moines in 1983, Rose Marie 
joined Widowed Persons’ Service, a program sponsored by AARP, and later 
became a facilitator for the group. In 1985 she helped found a social 
group for widowed people in Iowa and published a monthly newsletter 
which she prepared in her home for over 200 subscribers.

In 2000 Rose Marie moved from West Des Moines to Colorado Springs, CO
 and then returned to Grainfield in 2002 to enjoy her retirement. She 
purchased her home in Grainfield from the estate of her parents-in-law, 
Lawrence and Jennie Hartman.

Rose Marie was employed at various office jobs throughout her working
 years, most recently at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines and
 Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs.

From a young age, Rose Marie was blessed with musical ability and 
started playing the piano by ear at the age of three. In addition to 
piano, she played the accordion and keyboard and enjoyed providing 
musical entertainment for hospitals, rest homes, retirement homes, and 
private parties. She was a church organist at Sacred Heart Cathedral in 
Dodge City and Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson. Rose Marie was a
 parishioner of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Grainfield.

Rose Marie was preceded in death by her husband Douglas; her parents;
 brothers Charles, William, James, Francis, and Robert; parents-in-law 
Lawrence and Jennie Hartman; brothers-in-law Ben Ostmeyer, Kay Driver, 
and Ralph, Delmar, Frank, and Albert Hartman; and sisters-in-law 
Geraldine (Betty) Beckman, Lorraine Hartman and Carol (Shafer) Hartman.

She is survived by her sons Chris, of Grainfield, and Greg (Maria), 
of Del Norte, CO; a brother, Dennis, of Colorado Springs; sisters Anna 
Bell Ostmeyer of Hoxie, KS and Bea Driver of Goodland, KS; 
brothers-in-law Elmer (Laverna) Hartman of Lakewood, CO; James Hartman, 
of Park, and Robert (Kathy) Hartman of Grainfield; sister-in-law Rita 
(Lindeman) Beckman of Hoxie; and dozens of nieces and nephews.

At this time, only private family services will be taking place.

On November 7, 1953 she married Bertys Hunt in Nottoway County, Virginia.&nbsp; He passed away on November 27, 2018 in Garden City, Kansas. SEDGWICK COUNTY —A retired firefighter who was upset with the city’s mask ordinance has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill Wichita’s mayor.&nbsp;

Meredith Dowty, 59, Wichita, could face a charge of criminal threat.

Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said he had been read text messages received by another city official that asked about the mayor’s address and threatened his life. 

The mayor says the suspect talked about tyranny in the messages and was upset about the mask mandates and not being able to see his mother because of COVID-19 restrictions on elderly homes.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a case of alleged criminal threat made toward the mayor of Wichita.

On Friday, police&nbsp;were alerted to threatening statements directed toward city of Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

Officers immediately began investigating the threatening statements and arrested&nbsp;59-year-old Meredith Dowty of Wichita on a requested charge of criminal threat.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Wheeler released no additional details late Friday.

Police: Man threatens Wichita mayor over mask mandate

KANSAS CITY(AP) — The surge in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations is so severe in the Kansas City area that some hospitals were forced to refuse ambulances due to a lack of space, according to officials with one of the region’s largest health care providers.

Eight hospitals, in both Missouri and Kansas, reported such high volumes of patients Wednesday night that they temporarily stopped accepting ambulances, said Dr. Marc Larson, operations director of St. Luke’s Health System’s COVID Response Team. A St. Luke’s spokeswoman added that two of the hospitals were part of the St. Luke’s system. She did not identify the others.

“We’re bursting at the seams in the metropolitan area, and really across the state and the region,” Larson said in a phone interview.

Missouri has reached record hospitalization levels several times over the past few weeks, with the latest record of 1,443 being set Wednesday. Data has not yet been released for Thursday or Friday. Among the regions setting new records was the Kansas City area.

“I worry that if we don’t start taking this seriously as a metropolitan area, we’re going to be the next New York,” Larsen said. “We’re going to be the next hot spot, because though we have a lot of hospitals, we have a lot of capacity in the area, we are filling up fast.”

Missouri is among several states seeing a surge in new virus cases. On Friday, the state reported 2,017 new cases and 17 additional deaths. Missouri has reported 152,571 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,459 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.

The outbreak is prompting the White House Coronavirus Task Force to recommend that universities in the state test all students before Thanksgiving break,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/health/2020-10-15/missouris-high-coronavirus-rate-has-white-house-recommending-universities-test-students-before-thanksgiving-break" target="_blank">KCUR&nbsp;</a>reported. Some university leaders said it’s a costly plan and mass testing isn’t effective.

The task force urges schools to “work with university students to keep cases low, with the goal of low transmission in preparation for Thanksgiving.”

Twelve more inmates at the St. Louis County jail have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the number of current detainees with the coronavirus to 32.

Officials decided to test all 898 inmates after an outbreak was discovered on Oct. 2. As of Thursday, test results were pending for 103 inmates, St. Louis County Health Department spokeswoman Sara Dayley said.

Most of the inmates have no symptoms, but she noted three were experiencing mild symptoms.

After an inmate tested positive for the coronavirus during routine screening on Oct. 2, it prompted the facility-wide testing. Officials are still trying to determine the source of the outbreak.

Before October, the jail had reported 37 cases among inmates and 24 among employees. All of the earlier cases were traced to those bringing the virus with them once they entered the jail.

Fidelis Engel Jr. (Pinky), age 85 of Hays passed away Friday October 2, 2020, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse, Kansas. 

He was born September 16, 1935, in Munjor, Kansas, to Fidelis Sr and Adeline (Befort) Engel. Fidelis was a lifetime farmer in the Munjor, Kansas, area who dedicated his life to the land. His favorite past-time was reading, especially the Farm Journal, which he read from cover to cover.&nbsp; He is survived by three sons, Fidelis “Dale” Engel III (Jody) of Bloomington, Ill., Bruce K. Engel (Marilyn) of Hays, Darin J. Engel (Jackie) of Victoria; a daughter, Kim Engel of Seal Beach, CA, four sisters, Benita Rohr of Hays, Rosie Pfeifer of Ellis, Therese Haas of Hays and Sandy Wilson of Hays as well as eight grandchildren, Andrew, Katelyn, Erin, Wyatt, Tyler, Trenton, Quenton and Karli.  </figure>Fidelis Engel Jr. (Pinky), age 85 of Hays passed away Friday October 2, 2020, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse, Kansas. He was born September 16, 1935, in Munjor, Kansas, to Fidelis Sr and Adeline (Befort) Engel. Fidelis was a lifetime farmer in the Munjor, Kansas, area who dedicated his life to the land. His favorite past-time was reading, especially the Farm Journal, which he read from cover to cover.&nbsp; He is survived by three sons, Fidelis “Dale” Engel III (Jody) of Bloomington, Ill., Bruce K. Engel (Marilyn) of Hays, Darin J. Engel (Jackie) of Victoria; a daughter, Kim Engel of Seal Beach, CA, four sisters, Benita Rohr of Hays, Rosie Pfeifer of Ellis, Therese Haas of Hays and Sandy Wilson of Hays as well as eight grandchildren, Andrew, Katelyn, Erin, Wyatt, Tyler, Trenton, Quenton and Karli. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Dorothy Mermis, Ruby Remy and Lorene Kuhn. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Friday, October 23, 2020, at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel and Crematory 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601. February 24, 1935 - October 11, 2020, age 85

Gene 
was born to Faye and Margaret Mercer in Fort Scott, Kansas, where he 
went to elementary, middle and high school and JUCO of Fort Scott. 
Afterwards, he attended the Winona School of Photography in Indiana. He 
was hired by Kansas Gas and Electric of Wichita as their industrial 
photographer.&nbsp; It was there he met Karol Ziegler, formally of Collyer, 
Kansas, daughter of Frank and Lucille Ziegler. &nbsp;Karol and Gene married 
in 1960 and had 4 children. During this time, he served in the Army 
National Reserve for 4 years.&nbsp; In 1969, he moved his family to Colorado 
and became a Hotsy Distributor covering a 3 state area.&nbsp; He later had a 
long career as an underground fault finder, based out of Centennial 
Colorado, where the children grew up. He retired in 2012. &nbsp;In February 
of 2020, he and Karol moved to Arlington, Texas and lived there until 
his death.&nbsp;

Gene loved building model airplanes, woodworking, archery, fishing, 
camping and especially motorcycling. For quite a few years, he enjoyed 
piloting his own Cessna plane, and was also an accomplished gunsmith. &nbsp;

Surviving him are his wife, Karol Mercer, two daughters: Jean Ann 
Mercer {Jerry Fetterman} of Yellow Jacket, Colorado, and Barbara {Steve}
 Gray of San Antonio, Texas; and one son Mathew {Tracie} Mercer of 
Arlington Texas. One son-in-law, Les Wenger of Scottsdale, Arizona.&nbsp; He 
leaves behind 5 beloved grandchildren: Karoline Gray and Sam Gray, both 
students at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama;&nbsp;Logan, Madeline, and 
Dylan Mercer, living with their parents, Mathew and Tracie. Surviving 
in-laws include: &nbsp;Phillip {Jerry} Ziegler of Pratt, Kansas; Diane 
{James} Swisher of Houston Texas; Annette {Jerry} William of Hays, 
Kansas; Ronald {Rhoda} Ziegler of Collyer, Kansas; Jane Flagler of 
Overland Park, Kansas; Susan {Mike} Morgenstern of Lone Tree, Colorado. 
He is also survived by 1 cousin, Betsy Hamm of Topeka, Kansas, and many 
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter Susan 
Mercer-Wenger, who died in 2017.&nbsp;

Gene L. Mercer

Larry L. Kleweno, age 82, died October 14, 2020 at Cedar Village, 
Ness City.&nbsp; He was born on July 4, 1938 to Herman H and Pauline 
(Filbert) Kleweno in Ness City, Kansas at a maternity home.

Larry’s first home was southwest of Bazine, which he always called 
the “Home Place”.&nbsp; When his grandmother Filbert died in 1947 Herman and 
Pauline took their family into Bazine to live and care for Grandpa 
Filbert.&nbsp; Living at the South end of town there was room for a mild cow,
 chickens, rabbits, and ducks.&nbsp; His sister and Melford Shaben wanted to 
take Larry to the county fair, but he said, “No.”&nbsp; He wanted to stay 
home and take care of the chickens, rabbits, and ducks.

Larry attended the Bazine Grade school and completed his freshman 
year at Bazine High School. In 1952 the Kleweno family moved to Lenora, 
Kansas where he started his sophomore year.&nbsp; After filling the farm 
generator there was an explosion from the gasoline fumes, and he was 
badly burned. For the next four weeks he was hospitalized in Norton, but
 when gangrene set-in he was sent to a Denver hospital by train.&nbsp; They 
had to remove the windows to get him unloaded on the stretcher.&nbsp; Larry 
spent another 13 weeks in the hospital.&nbsp;

After graduating from high school, he was drafted and ruled 
ineligible because of the burns on his legs and hand.&nbsp; Larry went to 
Wichita for a short while to help a contractor from Norton erect steel 
frame buildings.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Following the March 1957 blizzard, he worked with a 
telephone crew rebuilding lines around Ellis, Kansas. &nbsp;

When Darlene and Melford moved to Ness City in 1960, Larry moved to 
the farm where he remained until he need the cared of Cedar Village on 
January 28, 2018.

It was on a cold night in January 1964, when he asked for a ride in 
Marian’s new 1964 Chevy Impala SS.&nbsp; Their bonding began and they were 
married March 6, 1965 at the Bazine United Methodist Church.

Larry was a lifetime member of the Bazine Methodist church, worked 
hard, enjoyed the cattle, brothers-in-law, family, and friends and still
 wanted chickens in his later years.&nbsp; He enjoyed going to auctions with 
neal and Dean and collected Minneapolis-Moline tractors and many old 
cars.&nbsp; He preferred FORDS.

He was Dad to Laura and Linn and Grandpa to Taylor Murray and Samantha Kleweno.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; daughter, Laura Kleweno; son, 
Linn Kleweno and his wife, Jennifer and sister, Marlene Trible of 
Ingleside, Texas.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Darlene 
Demoret, Wilma James, and Kathleen Slack; four nephews, Michael Slack, 
Roman Wiehebrink, Jr., John Kevin Landauer, and Barry Landauer; and 
niece, Sheely Delaney Wesley.

Funeral service will be at the Bazine Cemetery, Bazine, Kanas on 
Saturday, October 17, 2020, 12 O’clock Noon. The family requests casual 
attire. Viewing will be on Friday, October 16, 2020 from 1:00 to 9:00 
p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home.

The family requests memorial contributions to Cedar Village, Ness 
County Bank Building Foundation, or the Ness County Historical Society.

Larry Lee Kleweno

Donald J. Reinhardt, 83, of Russell, Kansas, passed away Friday, October 9, 2020, at the Hutchinson Regional Hospital in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Don was born May 16, 1937, in Hays, Kansas.  He was one of two children born to Arnold and LaVerne (Shaver) Reinhardt.  He grew up in rural Russell County and attended Mt. Brokaw country school.  He was a 1955 graduate of Russell High School.

Donald then served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, serving as a helicopter crew chief at Fort Sam Houston Army Base in San Antonio, Texas and Fort George G. Meade in Maryland.  After his service, he returned to the rural Russell area.

He was united in marriage to Bonnie Eichman in 1957.  This union was blessed with four children; Steve, Stan, Aimee, and Scott.  Later in life, he married Mary Ernst on February 14, 1990.

Don was a very proud farmer and rancher.  He farmed in the Big Creek township with his father until 1963 when he and his family moved to the Shaver farm near Bunker Hill, Kansas.  He was a member of the Bunker Hill United Methodist Church and the Bunker Hill Lions Club.  Don enjoyed hunting especially turkey, fishing, camping with Mary in their camper, tending his cattle, and flying his Piper J3 Cub. 

He loved traveling with family and friends, and spending winters in Zapata, Texas with Mary. His family was his greatest joy in life.  His kids and grandkids enjoyed and vividly remember numerous adventures with him. As he said all the time, “And, I’m responsible for every one of ‘em.”

Donald Jay’s surviving family include his wife of 30 years, Mary, of the home; daughter, Aimee Gfeller (Ron) of Russell, Kansas; three sons, Steve Reinhardt (Raeleen) of Russell, Kansas, Stan Reinhardt (Penny) of Russell, Kansas, and Scott Reinhardt (Marcie) of Carthage, Missouri; sister, Sandra Shea (Jim) of Colwich, Kansas; twelve grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; four step-children, ten step-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  The family has chosen cremation.  Memorials have been established with the Bunker Hill Lions Club and Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. Donald J. Reinhardt

Renee Mary (Shreve) Zodrow was born on December 12, 1949 in Colby, 
Kansas to Marie (Rodenbeck) and Pete Shreve. Renee grew up just south of
 Colby and graduated from Colby High School. After high school, Renee 
studied nursing. She became a registered nurse and soon after, met 
Joseph Zodrow on a blind date. They dated and were soon engaged to be 
married. Joe and Renee were wed on June 17, 1972 in Leoville, Kansas. To
 this union, three daughters were born: Aimee Renee, Rebecca Jo, and 
Cassie Jo. Joe and Renee raised their daughters in Leoville. Renee was a
 devoted wife and loving mother. She loved raising her girls in 
Leoville. While she had little experience with cooking when she was 
first married, Renee became well-known for her amazing cooking. She 
loved to cook big meals for her family. She often told about the first 
time making mashed potatoes and gravy for Joe. The gravy was too thick 
and the mashed potatoes too runny so they put their potatoes on top of 
the gravy. 
Renee worked as a registered nurse while raising her family. Her fiery 
spirit, compassion, and work ethic made her an exceptional surgical 
nurse. Renee joked that she liked being a surgical nurse because her 
patients were asleep, but anyone who knew her, knew she was only 
kidding. She was an avid patient advocate and cared deeply about the 
patients she helped care for. Renee’s nursing career started in Colby 
and moved to Oberlin. After she retired, she even worked for a brief 
period in Oakley. 
Renee loved animals and had an adventurous spirit. She got her 
motorcycle license before she married Joe and never let the license 
lapse. She and Joe loved to do day rides around northwest Kansas and 
Renee was always the leader of the pack. In recent years, her beloved 
dog, Rudy would even ride for short distances with her on her trike. 
Renee was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Leoville where she
 was a member of the Altar Society. She worked hard each year to help 
the parish with the Fall Festival. One of Renee’s main jobs for the 
event was to make the stuffing each year. She would spend hours toasting
 bread and making the stuffing taste amazing. Renee also spent a lot of 
time in the summer mowing and caring for the church and cemetery 
grounds. 
Renee died on October 11, 2020 at Logan County Hospital surrounded by 
family. Her warm and fiery spirit and infectious laugh will forever be 
missed. Renee was preceded in death by her mother, Marie; father, Pete; 
brother, Sandy; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Zodrow; father-in-law, Conrad 
Zodrow; and son-in-law, Dane Flora. 
She is survived by her husband, Joe; daughter, Aimee and Mike Zimmerman 
of Oakley; daughter, Rebecca Flora and Hubert Linenberger of Hays; 
daughter Cassie Zodrow and Dave Flipse of Oakley; grandchildren, Cole,

Renee Mary Zodrow

Ruth Evelyn Lowry, 93, passed away October 14, 2020, at the 
University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born on 
January 12, 1927, at Durant, Okla., to William A. &amp; Ruby (Canon) 
Carter. She married Ray J. Brakebill in June 1948, at Great Bend. He 
died in 1977. She then married Elmo H. Lowry on March 8, 1979, in 
Wichita. He died November 29, 2005.

Coming from Wichita in 1974, Ruth was a long-time teacher, teaching 
in Kalvesta, Wichita and Great Bend before retiring in 1979. She was a 
member of the First United Methodist Church, having served on various 
committees, N.E.A., R.S.V.P., and the Progress Club.

Survivors include, a sister, Lois Parker of Claremont, Calif.; and a 
step daughter, Joyce Jackson of Texas. She was preceded in death by her 
parents; her husbands, Ray J. Brakebill and Elmo H. Lowry; four 
brothers, Emmett Carter, James Carter, Reginald Carter, and Charles 
Wayne Carter; a sister, Louise Pelayo; and a stepson, Duane Lowry.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, 
October 22, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held 
at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 23, 2020, at Bryant Funeral Home, with

Kansas Livestock Auctioneer Championship to be at Russell Livestock

Leroy Fahey Holmes, 78, of Salina, 
passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020.  He was born July 7, 1942, in 
Denver, Colorado, to Darrell and Agnes (Atwell) Holmes. 

 Lee graduated 
from Utica High School and Fort Hays State University.  He worked as a 
teacher and a coach for many, many years.  In his free time he enjoyed 
gardening, woodworking, participating in Salina Senior Games, and 
watching/attending sporting events especially those with his 
grandchildren.


Leroy is survived by his children, Kristi Pike (Sean) of Salina, and 
Reed Holmes (Debi), of Denver; grandchildren, Ivan, Alyssa, Jeffery, 
Nathan, Erica, Brandon, Dustan (Mya), Tyler (Kristi), and Salena; 
great-grandchildren, Dakota, Kaleb, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Marcus, 
Adelynn, Kassandra and Sydney; and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his wife Janet, of 54 years; his parents; sister Carol and her husband Julian McEwen.


Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. with family present 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 23, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina.


Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 
Belmont Boulevard Christian Church, Salina, internment will follow in 
Gypsum Hill Cemetery.

Benita Barbara Snyder, 90, passed away on October 14, 2020. She was 
born on January 3, 1930 in Ness County, Kansas the daughter of Paul and 
Mary (Stoecklein) Seib.&nbsp; She married Daniel Snyder on June 22, 1957, in 
Garden City, Kansas. He died on June 23, 2013.

Benita was homemaker with a kind, loving, very gentle spirit and 
profound deep faith that carried her through every day of her life.&nbsp; She
 loved spending time with family and living her faith. She was a 
lifetime member of the Daughters of Isabella of Garden City, Eucharistic
 Minister, Choir member and Altar Society member at the Cathedral of Our
 Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City. She also assisted in various volunteer
 endeavors including Friendship Feast in Dodge City. &nbsp;In 2020 she moved 
to Brewster, Kansas where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law.

Survivors include 3 sons, Stephen (Nancy) Snyder of Dodge City, 
Daniel (Karen) Snyder of Glendale, AZ, Kenneth Snyder of Anthem, AZ; 3 
daughters, Sharon (Tim) Tompkins of Brewster, Patricia (Anthony) Pieschl
 of Wichita, Karen (Robert) Lindgren of Hutchinson; 8 brothers, Tony, 
Eugene, Paul, Robert, Tom, Vern, Gary and Jerry Seib; 2 sisters, Lorita 
Franz, Mary Catherine Hilmes; 11 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sisters, Eleanor 
Knoll, and Sister Florence Seib, and infant brother and 1 grandson.

Vickie Sue (Bane) Deines

Following a weekend spent with family, including his 
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his wife of 62 years, Billie, 
Pawnee County native and lifelong Burdett resident John Thompson, 84, 
passed on October 14. Born March 20, 1936, he was the son of John 
“Howard” and Doris “Jean” (Bindley) Thompson.&nbsp;

John was a quintessential Kansas farmer and rancher. When 
his hands weren’t in the soil, he was an active member of the Faith 
Fellowship Church in Hanston. He was committed to his Christian faith, 
actively answering the call by participating in bible studies and 
assisting with children’s ministries. He had a passion for reading, 
history, bicycling, planting, K-State sports and volunteering with the 
Lions Club. John’s numerous bike rides across Kansas, Missouri, South 
Dakota, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Nebraska hinted at his enthusiasm for travel
 and love for meeting new people, which he realized by spending winters 
in Texas and summers in Colorado. Even during his retirement, he found 
ways to give back from replacing window screens and sheet rock to 
painting shutters for community churches.&nbsp;

Survivors include: his wife, Billie Mae (Herndon) Thompson 
of Burdett; a daughter, Robin (Bill) Niederee of Great Bend; a son, 
Marshall Thompson of Burdett; two grandsons, Daniel (Heather) Thompson 
of Hanston and Dillon Thompson of Burdett; a sister, Doris Chipman of 
Denton, Texas; three granddaughters, Katlyn (Jonathan) Rosborough of 
Washington, D.C., Allison Niederee of Los Angeles, Sarah Niederee of 
Buffalo, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Will, and Anna-Beth 
Thompson, and James Rosborough.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dan Thompson.

Pastor Doug Ellison of Faith Fellowship Church in Hanston 
(located 6.5 miles West of Burdett turn North 1/4 Mile) will preside 
over the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19. The

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Protesters in Kansas City chained themselves to the doors of a downtown courthouse Thursday and shut down virtual eviction proceedings with online disruptions.

The protest, which drew about 100 people, was organized by the nonprofit group KC Tenants.

Protesters holding signs saying “eviction kills” and “court's closed today” called on Jackson County Judge David Byrn to halt eviction hearings and keep residents in their homes during the coronavirus pandemic and related economic crisis.

The Jackson County Circuit Court temporarily halted evictions this spring, but those resumed this summer. Tenant advocates have been calling for another moratorium amid high unemployment brought on by the pandemic.

KC Tenants and the American Civil Liberties Union sued last month, alleging Byrn's administrative order laying out procedures for eviction cases violated a federal halt of evictions issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The court said in a statement that the judicial branch “does not create laws, statutes or policy,” but rather enforces and follows laws set by executive and legislative branches. It says it is and will remain in compliance with the CDC order.
