WASHINGTON (AP) — Typically I wear a suit and tie when visiting the Federal Reserve, one of the most powerful financial institutions in the world. But on Thursday, it was jeans, boots and a hard hat.

I was not at the Fed for the usual discussions of interest rates, inflation and unemployment, but for something more down to earth:&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-federal-reserve-jerome-powell-145b0189a8c7acaab9fcfb097dc376c9">a tour</a>&nbsp;of what has become the most famous — or notorious — building renovation in Washington,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-building-renovations-trump-powell-70cfb70f2c09105c2a144179d5d92e69">a $2.5 billion overhaul</a>&nbsp;of two of the Fed’s office buildings.

The project has become an increasingly unpleasant headache for the embattled chair of the Fed, Jerome Powell, as he weathers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fed-federal-reserve-powell-trump-63c3e35e8606b7b73455b08aa21456dd">nearly incessant personal attacks</a>&nbsp;from President Donald Trump.

Trump has been clear about what he wants from Powell, whom he appointed to lead the central bank in 2017: lower interest rates. Yet the Fed is intended to be an independent agency, and the Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-board-members-firings-nlrb-supreme-court-1ecda00f901360cc2b2f025bdde703d6">has signaled</a>&nbsp;that the president can’t fire Powell just because the Fed chair won’t cut rates as fast as Trump wants. But he might be able to do so “for cause,” meaning some kind of malfeasance or neglect. Trump last week&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-building-renovations-trump-powell-70cfb70f2c09105c2a144179d5d92e69">suggested</a>&nbsp;that the escalating construction costs could be grounds to fire Powell.

With that threat looming in the background, the Fed decided to open up its massive project for a few journalists — including me — to get a closer look.

On Thursday, Fed staff led a small group of reporters, photographers and television cameras on an extensive tour of the active construction site that comprises the two 1930s-era buildings. The renovation began in 2022, and the Fed hopes to complete it in the fall of 2027.

By providing journalists — and, by extension, the public — such extensive access, the Fed clearly hopes greater transparency will help beat back the White House’s criticism. Trump toured the same site several hours after the reporters, then downplayed his threats to fire the Fed chair.

In June, Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees the Fed, suggested the rebuild has been extravagant, and includes “rooftop terraces, custom elevators that open into VIP dining rooms, white marble finishes and even a private art collection.”

Fed staff, who requested anonymity to discuss the renovation, showed reporters what they said are future conference rooms that are sometimes used for meals, not “VIP dining rooms.” An elevator is being upgraded to be more accessible to people with disabilities. And some white marble finishes were&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/powell-trump-federal-reserve-16a3a78bab27f44e058d69829a8dcfa9">added at the insistence of a local commission</a>, the staff noted, which included several Trump appointees.

The journalists walked around dumpsters and pipes and evaded front-end loaders, while occasionally straining to hear the explanations of Fed staff over the sounds of drilling, cutting and hammering. About 700 to 800 workers are involved in the project across two shifts each day. Reporters visited the roof of the Fed’s main headquarters, the Marriner S. Eccles building, which has sweeping views of the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall and parts of downtown Washington.

Fed staff said the roof would not have “rooftop terraces” but instead would include grass and other plants as part of a “green roof” that would reduce cooling costs and stormwater runoff. There had been plans for a seating area but that had been removed because it appeared to be an amenity.

The staff sought to highlight the many costs they said were largely out of their control: blast-resistant windows and other security upgrades, modern electronics and HVAC systems, and historic preservation efforts that led to the use of more marble.

The workers also used plywood extensively to protect stairs and many wall coverings, which Trump singled out as too costly.

“You saw the protection of plywood,” Trump told reporters after his tour. “I mean, that was a lot of money just to protect it for a period of time. I would have done it very gingerly and easily and not have to spend millions of dollars on protection.”

It is clearly a massive project. The Fed has shut down a street that runs between the two buildings. Underneath will be a part of a parking garage, as well as a tunnel connecting the two renovated buildings. The Fed says after the project they will be able to house more of their 3,000 employees in the two buildings and reduce its rented office space.

After his own tour, Trump appeared to lower the temperature around the project, at least for now, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social: “The cost overruns are substantial but, on the positive side, our Country is doing very well and can afford just about anything — Even the cost of this building!”

Should Powell cut the Fed’s short-term interest rates soon — which economists say could happen in September — that could appease Trump. And after that, you may never hear about the Fed’s renovations again.

Behind the scenes with 'Contractor-in-Chief' at the Fed mid-renovation

Beginning Monday, July 28, the 13th Street intersection in the 1300 block of Walnut in Hays, will be closed to traffic for pavement repairs.

 Work is anticipated to be completed by Friday, August 1, 2025, weather permitting. Traffic control will be set in areas of work being completed.

Growing up in Hays, Jennifer Goetz has spent the past 23 years providing&nbsp; child care, primarily to the community’s youngest children.

"I started working as a case manager for High Plains Mental Health Center for a little over a year before getting pregnant with my first child," Goetz said. "When I was on maternity leave, I didn't want to go back to work. I wanted to be able to stay home with my children."

Since then, Goetz has cared for five to six full-time children at a time, typically up to school age, while forming close bonds with their families. She often attends special moments outside of&nbsp; child care, such as weddings and birthday parties.

"I've gone to several of their baseball games this summer because they're always asking, 'Are you going to come to my game tonight?'" she said. "They've invited me on some family vacations without the parents knowing."

Goetz emphasized the value of home child care as an extension of the family and said strong communication with parents is key. She said the joy of her work continues well beyond her regular work hours.

Goetz said the child care industry has evolved since she began, with stricter state regulations and challenges in taking time off. While she receives some grant support, she often covers the cost of food and supplies out of pocket.

"Sometimes I have a group that loves to color and paint. Other times I have groups that are into playing with dinosaurs, cars or really into superhero dress up," she said.

Goetz said her&nbsp; child care group are frequent visitors to a nearby park, giving the children plenty of time to develop their gross motor skills.

Goetz’s two daughters grew up helping with the child care and remain close to the children, making goodbyes emotional for the entire family when the kids finally head off to school.

"Watching them grow and develop, knowing that you have a big part in that is really rewarding," Goetz said.

Goetz said she plans to continue providing child care as long as she is able and as long as there is still a need. Her advice for those entering the field: “Expect the unexpected.”

"I like to say every day is kind of the same but very different. You're working with children, so you don't know what you're going to get day to day," she said.

Emily Ostmeyer, Goetz’s oldest daughter who recently married, nominated her as the July Child Care Champion and highlighted her mother’s dedication.

"I could not praise her more for the care that she provides and the way that she loves those kids like they're her own," Ostmeyer said.

Child Care Champion wants to care for kids as long as she can

Riley Leiker, 10, of Hays, is accustomed to success. 

The Hays Strider athlete, who was the 2024 AAU National Champion in the shot put, is ranked the top thrower going into this year's Junior Olympic meet. Her toss of 29’ 4 ½” at the regional qualifier in Springfield, Missouri in June placed her at the top of AAU youth throwers for 2025.

Riley’s work ethic is testament to her farming family, where all the children are also athletes on the Striders team. Brothers Logan and Jacob run and throw for the Hays Striders and will be members of the Hays High teams this coming school year.

 Riley is also a 4-H member and has enjoyed success there as well. Her bucket calves have won reserve champion and champion over the past several years.

Riley’s shot put coach, Traci Vap, said “Riley's a really dedicated and driven person with an awesome attitude. She's super focused on her goals, and it shows. I've seen her make huge strides in understanding her technique and putting my coaching into action.”

Not only does she throw the shot, but she runs a very respectable 400 meter dash and 800 meter run, taking first place in every meet she competed in this year. In fact, her favorite event is the 400. “Riley is very, very competitive,” Strider coach Dave Haberman stated. “She trains without question and has really invested herself into our program. Her results reflect that.”

Her pre-meet day meal is her favorite food - steak, with a homemade breakfast burrito the morning of competition. In preparation for a meet, she combines a series of warm-ups and stretches, and “lots of water.” Her regiment leaves no room for junk food, even when traveling, she added, but her favorite post-meet meal is “ice cream!”

“When Riley first came to the Striders, she tried her hardest to keep up with the older athletes,” Haberman stated. “She would cut across the football field just to be able to run with the group.” Now, she is leading the pack for the girls and they are trying to keep up with her. She now sees herself as a mentor and role model for the younger girls on the team.

Riley’s favorite subject in school is math and she plans to become a doctor, but not before accomplishing her dream of being an Olympic runner and thrower. Her future may include the pentathlon and heptathlon but she has some reservations about hurdles. “We have a really good hurdle coach in Brooklyn Pfeifer and I am sure she would get Riley up to speed on the hurdles,” Haberman said. “I think Riley could accomplish anything she set her mind to.”

Vap, herself an All-American athlete at Pittsburg State University, added, “What really makes her stand out is how calm she stays under pressure during competitions—you don't often see that in someone her age. She's incredibly determined and always manages to pull off an impressive throw, even when things are tough. Her success totally comes from her pure grit and hard work, both when we're practicing and when she's on her own.”

Her goal in the upcoming AAU Junior Olympic meet in Houston, held July 28 through Aug. 2 is to make the podium in all three of her events - shot put, 400 meter dash, and 800 meter run. A big goal, but with her focus, competitiveness, and determination, she may just accomplish it.

Hays Strider ranked No. 1 in nation

Kansas Department of Transportation

NORTON — The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a resurfacing project on a portion of U.S. 24 in Thomas County the week of July 28.

Project work will involve milling and overlay on 8.5 miles of the highway starting at the east city limits of Colby and ending just east of the U.S. 83 intersection. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the areas where crews are actively working and directed by flaggers and a pilot car. Motorists should plan for delays of 15 minutes or less during daylight hours.

Project work is expected to be completed in mid-September, conditions permitting.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the areas where crews are actively working and directed by flaggers and a pilot car. an inmate who escaped from custody Saturday evening while being
transported from Hays Medical Center.

According to the sheriff’s department, Juan Olivares Herrera
was last seen running south on 22nd St. and Canterbury. Law enforcement
officials are searching the area.

&nbsp;Herrera is a Hispanic
male with brown hair and brown eyes. He is approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 100
pounds. 

He also has a large black and grey watercolor-type tattoo on
his left shoulder/chest, last known to have a mustache/goatee.

He has a distinct leg injury and was last known to be
wearing jail oranges and handcuffs. 

Anyone with information on Herrera’s whereabouts should
contact law enforcement and not approach him.&nbsp;


He is being held on the following charges: domestic battery,
aggravated robbery, and disorderly conduct.

The latest analysis of the housing market in Hays by RDG Planning and Design, Omaha, shows a need for new living units in all categories.

A housing study is required by state statute before the economic incentive tool, Reinvestment Housing Incentive District, can be used. The city has six such incentive district projects underway.

City commissioners had a robust, hour-long discussion about housing during their meeting Thursday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"We really are doing good things," said Alaina Cunningham, commissioner. "There's still obstacles to overcome, and obviously, the data is showing we still have housing needs.&nbsp;

"Affordability is going to be a different definition for all of us. ... But I really feel as a whole, we are trying to look at all the options and making things affordable and trying to encourage development, mostly private development," Cunningham said.&nbsp;

Vice Mayor Mason Ruder pointed out the slowdown and even elimination of state and federal incentives for housing projects, particularly low-income developments.&nbsp;

"We sometimes get railroaded by state and federal cuts ... for programs that are supposed to help solve some of these problems," Ruder said. 

"Instead of saying we're done, we're here discussing different avenues we can take without throwing straight cash at it because ... we like having money in reserves," he said.

The city plans for a 1% annual population growth rate, which Doug Williams, Grow Hays&nbsp;executive director, called "aggressive."&nbsp;An average annual construction of 95 housing units is required to support a 1% growth rate. 

Details of the housing report showed the mix of housing has shifted&nbsp;from single-family and duplex to&nbsp;single-family and multi-family over the past three years.&nbsp;The greatest need is for households making less than $25,000&nbsp; and more than $75,000 annually. 

The shortage of housing is likely to persist as there are more job openings than available units. The report concluded that due to the lack of private market response to produce a variety of units, the city and its partners will need to provide incentives and share risk in the production and maintenance of housing.&nbsp;

"It takes us, the community at large, current businesses and businesses looking at us, people moving in and people that have lived here forever. ... that's how we get things done. ...", Ruder said.

The 2025 Hays housing study is available on the city's <a href="https://ks-hays.civicplus.com/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_07242025-1561">website</a>.&nbsp;

In other business, a public hearing was conducted with no comment for a $300,000 state Community Development Block Grant request. 

Hays developer Tim Speno, One Twenty Seven Investments, plans to rehabilitate the second floor of the 100-year-old building at 1012 Main St. into Airbnb rental units.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There is no financial obligation to the city.

NEW YORK (AP) — Disgraced former U.S. Rep.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/george-santos">George Santos</a>&nbsp;reported to a federal prison in New Jersey on Friday to begin serving a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-sentencing-prison-0961831af8870686853acb22d049c85e">seven-year sentence</a>&nbsp;for the fraud charges that got him ousted from Congress.

The federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the New York Republican was in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution in Fairton, in southern New Jersey.

Santos&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-plea-court-new-york-90741d068fd94090419fc0fd79be30cc">pleaded guilty</a>&nbsp;last summer to federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft charges for deceiving donors and stealing people’s identities in order to fund his congressional campaign.

His lawyer Joe Murray, when asked for comment Friday, responded with a brief, all-caps text: “FREE GEORGE SANTOS.”

The ever-online Santos, who turned 37 years old on Tuesday, hosted a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MrSantosNY/status/1948503762349301975">farewell party</a>&nbsp;for himself on the social media platform X on Thursday night.

“Well, darlings … The curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed,” he&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MrSantosNY/status/1948529151541215324">wrote in a post</a>&nbsp;afterwards. “From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news what a ride it’s been! Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried … most days.”

Santos will serve his time in a minimum security camp at the all-male facility, which also includes a larger medium security prison, according to the Bureau of Prisons.

In a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSgDp8phTSI">Thursday interview</a>, he didn't name the prison where he was serving his sentence, but described the camp setting as a “big upgrade” from the medium-security lockup he was initially assigned to.

Among the other notable inmates serving time at Fairton is Lamor Miller-Whitehead. The Brooklyn preacher, known for his flashy lifestyle and friendship with New York City’ Mayor Eric Adams, was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brooklyn-preacher-lamor-miller-whitehead-fraud-sentence-cc3e9994abf6533ceb1a3634e90fa068">sentenced to nine years</a>&nbsp;in prison last year&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brooklyn-preacher-lamor-miller-whitehead-fraud-trial-92168ead8fd37e8e101aedee86f3f010">for fraud</a>.

In April, a federal judge declined to give Santos a lighter two-year sentence that he sought, saying she was unconvinced he was truly remorseful. In the weeks before his sentencing, Santos said he was “profoundly sorry” for his crimes, but he also complained frequently that he was a victim of a political witch hunt and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-fraud-sentencing-prison-1a5f54eb7ba742e91cffef748e6b1b1b">prosecutorial overreach</a>.

Santos was elected in 2022, flipping a wealthy district representing parts of Queens and Long Island for the GOP. But he served for less than a year and became just the&nbsp;<a href="https://history.house.gov/Institution/Discipline/Expulsion-Censure-Reprimand/">sixth member</a>&nbsp;of the House to be ousted by colleagues after it was revealed he had fabricated much of his life story.

During his winning campaign, Santos painted himself as a successful business owner who worked at prestigious Wall Street firms when, in reality, he was struggling financially.

He also falsely claimed to have been a volleyball star at a college he never attended and referred to himself as “a proud American Jew” before insisting he meant that he was “Jew-ish” because his Brazilian mother’s family had a Jewish background.

The cascade of lies eventually led to congressional and criminal inquiries into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-district-of-columbia-congress-george-santos-campaign-finance-f58dc7242796327d81738559885e9078">how Santos funded his campaign</a>&nbsp;and, ultimately, his political downfall.

Since his ouster from Congress, Santos has been making a living hosting a podcast called “Pants on Fire with George Santos” and hawking personalized video messages on Cameo.

He has also been holding out hope that his unwavering support for President Donald Trump might help him win a last-minute reprieve.

The White House said this week that it “will not comment on the existence or nonexistence” of any clemency request.

In media appearances this month, the former lawmaker wasn’t shy about sharing his morbid fears about life behind bars.

“I’m not trying to be overdramatic here. I’m just being honest with you. I look at this as practically a death sentence,” Santos told Tucker Carlson during&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdVCF2dOZZI">an interview</a>. “I’m not built for this.”

On social media, his recent musings have sometimes taken a dark turn.

“I’m heading to prison, folks and I need you to hear this loud and clear: I’m not suicidal. I’m not depressed. I have no intentions of harming myself, and I will not willingly engage in any sexual activity while I’m in there,” Santos said&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/MrSantosNY/status/1943028142588694817">on X</a>. “If anything comes out suggesting otherwise, consider it a lie … full stop.”

Disgraced former congressman reports to prison for 7-year sentence

Edna Bernice Frenzl, age 89,
of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at her home.

She was born on April 7,
1936, in rural Graham County Kansas to Henry and Mable (Rolland) Kolste.&nbsp;
She married Lawrence “Larry” Frenzl on August 29, 1952, in Bentonville,
Arkansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on August 8, 2012.

Edna worked at the Hallmark
store on The Mall in Hays and was the store manager for over 35 years.&nbsp;
She grew up and attended school in Palco, Kansas, and worked at her mother’s
restaurant.&nbsp; She moved to Hays in 1966, and sold World Book encyclopedias,
and Fashion Two-Twenty Cosmetics.

She was a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and a member of the Hays &nbsp;V.F.W.
Auxiliary Post # 9076.&nbsp;&nbsp; She enjoyed her gardening, flowers, gambling
trips, and her frequent stops at the Hays V.F.W. club room for their evening
meals and visiting with her V.F.W. family, and other friends.&nbsp; &nbsp;She
always said she had two families, her V.F.W. family, and her own.
&nbsp;&nbsp;Edna’s pride and joy was her grandchildren, and her family.

She is survived by her
children, Michael Frenzl and wife, Jane Rajewski, Hays, KS; Ronald Frenzl and
wife, Donna, Olathe, KS; Susan Miller and husband, Kenneth, Hays, KS; Betty
Hrabe and husband, Kenny, Stockton, KS; her grandchildren, Amy Feldt (Cory); Paul
Houser; Sherry Wellbrock (Cory); Shawn Miller (Rebecca); Amber Miller-Peck
(Eli); Paul Hrabe; Alicia Post (Derek); her 13 great grandchildren; her many
nieces and nephews; her very special four legged friend “Lucy”; and her Hays
V.F.W. family.

Edna was preceded in death by
her parents, Henry and Mable Kolste; her granddaughter, Ashly Frenzl; her
brother, Donald Kolste and wife, Marjorie; her infant brother, Robert Kolste;
her sisters, Leona Koller; Betty Lang and husband, Al; Eva Paul and husband,
Willard; and Donna Kolste.

of Hays, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at her home.She was born on April 7,
1936, in rural Graham County Kansas to Henry and Mable (Rolland) Kolste.&nbsp;
She married Lawrence “Larry” Frenzl on August 29, 1952, in Bentonville,
Arkansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on August 8, 2012.Edna worked at the Hallmark
store on The Mall in Hays and was the store manager for over 35 years.&nbsp;
She grew up and attended school in Palco, Kansas, and worked at her mother’s
restaurant.&nbsp; She moved to Hays in 1966, and sold World Book encyclopedias,
and Fashion Two-Twenty Cosmetics.She was a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and a member of the Hays &nbsp;V.F.W.
Auxiliary Post # 9076.&nbsp;&nbsp; She enjoyed her gardening, flowers, gambling
trips, and her frequent stops at the Hays V.F.W. club room for their evening
meals and visiting with her V.F.W. family, and other friends.&nbsp; &nbsp;She
always said she had two families, her V.F.W. family, and her own.
&nbsp;&nbsp;Edna’s pride and joy was her grandchildren, and her family.She is survived by her
children, Michael Frenzl and wife, Jane Rajewski, Hays, KS; Ronald Frenzl and
wife, Donna, Olathe, KS; Susan Miller and husband, Kenneth, Hays, KS; Betty
Hrabe and husband, Kenny, Stockton, KS; her grandchildren, Amy Feldt (Cory); Paul
Houser; Sherry Wellbrock (Cory); Shawn Miller (Rebecca); Amber Miller-Peck
(Eli); Paul Hrabe; Alicia Post (Derek); her 13 great grandchildren; her many
nieces and nephews; her very special four legged friend “Lucy”; and her Hays

The Women Who Lead still has raffle tickets left for its 31 Days of Cash drawing in August.&nbsp;

Tickets will be on sale Saturday in downtown Hays during Bazaar on the Bricks from 7:30 a.m. to noon or until sell out.

The Women Who Lead booth will be across the street from Diamond R Jewelers, between Eighth and Ninth streets.

Tickets are $25 each. A maximum of 500 tickets will be sold.

A drawing will be conducted each day in August.

WASHINGTON (AP) —President Trump and Kansas U.S. Senator Roger Marshall are celebrating Australia's announcement that it will reduce restriction on US beef imports.

“Now, we are going to sell so much to Australia because this is undeniable and irrefutable Proof that U.S. Beef is the Safest and Best in the entire World,” the president said in a post on his Truth Social platform.

Australian Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said Thursday that relaxing the restrictions designed to keep the country free of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-3f554af1fb8443ff8cda7ddaa54190b5">mad cow disease</a>, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE, would not compromise biosecurity.

“Australia stands for open and free trade — our cattle industry has significantly benefited from this,” Collins said in a statement.

After nearly 16 years of ashes and ambition, the former Wilson Czech Opera House is finally set to reopen in August under the stars.

Allison Ford, treasurer of the Wilson Czech Opera House, said the restoration is nearly complete following a 2009 fire that devastated most of the historic structure, 415 27th St.

"The Opera House was built to celebrate the Czech Bohemian culture, and we restored it for celebration," she said.

Ford said the building will open on Aug. 30. Final touches are in progress, including the installation of the stage, sidewalks, electricity and engraved bricks purchased by supporters, which will be installed at the entrance.

Events like musical and theater performances are expected to be held at the opera house. Kenny Benebba, president of the Wilson Czech Opera House, said Jimmy Dee and The Fabulous Destinations will kick off the new chapter for Wilson.

The rock-'n'-roll band is scheduled to perform from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with brats and sauerkraut meals being served at 5 p.m., and drinks offered by the neighboring American Legion, where Benebba is also involved.

"If somebody wants to rent a venue, they can rent the opera house and the legion for an indoor and outdoor event," he said.&nbsp;

Constructed in 1901, the opera house was initially called Turner Hall, made from quarried stone from five miles outside of Wilson.

Equipped with a dining hall, kitchen, gymnasium, stage floor and balcony, the opera house hosted a variety of events, such as dances, gymnastics, weddings and pageants.

The 2009 fire from a neighboring building spread to the opera house, reducing the venue to ruins despite efforts to extinguish the flames.

Ford said the remaining limestone walls have been restored and reinforced with steel bracing, the basement has been filled and the performance stage, donated by MaiCo Industries of Ellsworth, is under construction.

"We're very close. We have the final steps to go," she said.

The opera house received support through grants from organizations such as the Kansas Department of Commerce, Dane G. Hansen Foundation and Smoky Hills Community Foundation.

"We hope to see people in there celebrating anniversaries, weddings, family reunions, dancing and watching theater. We just want it to be a place of celebration again," Ford said.

The World's Largest Hand-painted Czech Egg, standing at 20 feet high and 15 feet wide, is to the east of the former Opera House.

overabundance of items that are duplicate and may not fit their mission.

Executive Director Amanda Rupp says they will host a sale on
Saturday as part of the Bazaar on the Bricks in downtown Hays.
