Hays USD 489 BOE to discuss new high school, graduation requirement

Fort Hays State was tabbed No. 20 in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll released on Sunday (Aug. 17). It is the third time the Tigers will start the season in the Top 25 of the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll, the last being in 2019 when they were ranked No. 8 in the nation to start the year.

The Tigers will open their season with a Top 25 matchup in regards to the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll. The No. 20 Tigers play host to No. 12 ranked Angelo State on the evening of Thursday, August 28 in Hays. Angelo State is ranked in both preseason top 25 polls, holding the No. 13 spot in the AFCA poll. FHSU received the fourth-most votes among teams outside of the top 25 in the AFCA poll. Both FHSU and ASU went 8-3 overall last year.

The Tigers are among four MIAA teams ranked in the D2Football.com Preseason Top 25 Poll, joining No. 3 Central Oklahoma, No. 10 Pittsburg State, and No. 24 Central Missouri.

Fort Hays State was ranked No. 19 in the final regular season D2Football.com Poll last year, but with falling short of the playoffs, they were left out of the final top 25 released by D2Football.com last year. 🏈 Tigers tabbed No. 20 in D2Football.com preseason top 25 poll

Regina B. (Kisslinger) Schuster, age 94, departed this life on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Regina was the sixth born in a family of 11 siblings to Herman and Catherine (Flax) Kisslinger. She was born on the family farm northeast of Ransom, Kansas, on Thursday, November 13, 1930.

Regina attended Cyrus Country School through the eighth grade. As a young woman, she worked for neighbors cleaning houses until her marriage to Kenneth Littlechild in 1950. In 1986, she married Joseph Schuster.

Throughout her life, Regina was a dedicated worker. She spent 34 years employed at Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital as a Certified Nurse Assistant and later worked at Best Western Motel until her retirement in 2018. When she was not working, Regina could often be found in her garden or tending to the flowers she loved so much.

Regina was a devoted mother, grandmother, and sister. She is survived by her children, Mary (Dan) Timm, Colorado Springs, CO; Ernest Wayne (Karen) Littlechild, WaKeeney, KS; and Eric (Amanda) Littlechild, WaKeeney, KS; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind two sisters, Rosetta Healy, Hays, KS, and Bernice Blakely, Houston, TX; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Kisslinger, WaKeeney, KS, and Mary Kisslinger, Russell, KS; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Schuster; brothers, Joe, Ambrose, John, and Paul Kisslinger; sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Casey, Frances Casey, Anna Pfannenstiel, and Rose Smith; stepdaughter; two sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and five nieces and one nephew.

A rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial Mass on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, WaKeeney, KS, with inurnment to follow at Christ the King Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital, and Masses, sent to Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 N. 12th St., WaKeeney, KS 67672.

C. John Knoll (Clarence John Knoll, Jr.) of Hays, Kansas was born March 19, 1950, and died August 16, 2025, at the age of 75. He was born in Hays, Kansas to Clarence and Alberta Knoll.

Above all else, John loved his family more than life itself. His wife, sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the most important things in his life. He never missed a chance to attend dance recitals, softball and baseball games, karate ceremonies, and graduations.

He spent his life with a passion for horses and cattle. Whether it was working as a cowboy, traveling for horse shows or raising cattle.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Norleen, sons: Joe (Dani) of Ellis, and Michael (Ashley) of Topeka. Grandchildren: Daylee, Jordon, Billie, Reagan, Isabella, Braidon, and Andrew; and his great-grandchildren: Ellie and Ellianna.

John was preceded by his parents: Clarence and Alberta Knoll; and his brothers: Joseph and Jerome Knoll.

Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church – Hays, 215 West 13th Street Hays, Kansas 67601. Interment will follow the services in the parish cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be Tuesday, August 19, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a parish vigil service beginning at 7:00 PM at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory – Brock’s Chapel, 2509 Vine Street Hays, Kansas 67601.

C. John Knoll (Clarence John Knoll, Jr.)

An agency that provides support for people with severe mental illnesses in Hays is in danger of temporarily closing due to a paperwork error and it is seeking donations to stay open.

High Plains Independence in Hays supports people with mental illnesses, many of whom are on disability and older than 65. All of the organization's services are free.

The agency, which is one of eight consumer-run organizations across the state, provides a drop-in facility, support groups in Hays and Great Bend, as well as regular visits to the state mental hospital in Larned.

After a recent audit of the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability, which funds CROs, High Plains Independence was informed it had not filed the necessary 990 forms with the IRS to maintain its nonprofit status, Ginna Anderson, High Plains Independence executive director, said.

Anderson was never notified by the state, the IRS, or the High Plains' accountant that the organization had not filed a 990 form since at least 2014.

"I took over in 2011, and I have been asking the state, which was our funder, for a directors' meeting or training because I just fell into it and I have been doing the best I can with what I know, and trying to help people maintain recovery," she said.

"I would say because of the large turnover with [the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability], no one ever asked about it," she said.

All employees of the High Plains Independence, including Anderson, have mental illnesses and are sometimes referred to as consumers.

She added, "You can't do what you don't know. None of us is educated in finances and tax laws. That is what you have those other people for."

Without its nonprofit status, High Plains Independence can't receive funding from the state until it is reinstated.

High Plains Independence has an annual budget of $125,000. The organization employs three part-time staff, including Anderson. It also rents a building at 1200 Canterbury and maintains a transportation vehicle.

The organization has about $12,000 a month in expenses, and Anderson said it does not have enough money in the bank to make its August payroll.

Anderson said the organization is working with a new local accountant and has already started the process of filing the necessary paperwork with the state and IRS to regain its nonprofit status.

However, that process may take three to six months to complete.

Who does High Plains Independence help?

Anderson said she is concerned this vital resource for people who struggle with mental illness might have to close until the organization can regain its state funding, leaving people who depend on the support at High Plains in the lurch.

Consumer-run organizations were created to reduce rehospitalization. The CRO's, as they are also known, started as drop-in centers. When they began, they were only required to have a TV, and coffee and tea.&nbsp;

Today, High Plains Independence offers daily support groups and activities Mondays through Saturdays, and outreach into the Hays community and beyond.

The organization serves about 35 members in its Hays location. It provides a support group for another 10 regular attendees to a weekly support group in Great Bend.

More people are served through Anderson's monthly visits to the state hospital.

One of the faithful members of the High Plains spent years in Larned. He told Anderson he had hope for the first time in his life when he heard Anderson speak at Larned.

"You never know what impression you make on people," she said.

High Plains Independence has also taken over peer support of the&nbsp;Assisted Outpatient Treatment program in Hays that was formally funded through a grant held by the local National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI.

Anderson is a part of a team that supports people in the community who have had repeated hospitalizations or encounters with law enforcement because of their mental illnesses. Anderson provides peer support and a connection to resources at High Plains Independence.&nbsp;

Assisted Outpatient Treatment&nbsp;is also aimed at reducing rehospitalization and incarceration for people who have severe mental illnesses.

"People stay out of the hospital because they can come out here to a pleasant environment where they can own their feelings and they can get supporting tools so they can work through issues," she said.

"They come to find out that what they are dealing with, other people have dealt with, and they are not alone," she said.

Because of the challenges of their mental illnesses, some members of the CRO have lost touch with their families. The CRO hosts holiday events and birthday parties. The center has even hosted memorial services.

Without High Plains Independence, some of the organization's members would be in Larned State Hospital or maybe not taking their medication, Anderson said.

Anderson noted that hospitalization or jail is much more expensive than the support services provided by CROs.

Although High Plains Independence does not require its members to take medication or engage in other mental health treatment, it encourages its members to do what they need to do to maintain mental health.

"If I ask someone if they have taken their meds this morning, it's not from an authority. It comes from a peer or a friend," Anderson said.

Anderson also gives quarterly presentations about her lived experience of mental illness to professionals who work in the mental health field so that they can earn their continuing education credits.&nbsp;

"I'm asking the community, at least funding-wise, to help us for the next three months," she said.

"If we had the money, we could stand on our feet, and it would be a support to know our community cares about us," she said.

Anderson said the High Plains Independence has been invaluable in her recovery from major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

"I learned that I could teach, on certain topics that I am educated," she said, "that I have a purpose, that I enjoy helping other people and that I enjoy helping people grow."

"I just feel this is going to kill me," Anderson said. "We just can't close. ... What are people going to do if they don't have this place to come to work on recovery?"

Financially, without her part-time income from High Plains, she said would have to find another home for herself and a 12-year-old child in her custody.

"I would feel like a failure even though it was because of circumstances beyond my control," she said.

Others who depend on High Plains Independence

Linda Beagley has been a member of High Plains Independence for years. She has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Since her Alzheimer's diagnosis, she said the support she received at High Plains Independence has become even more important.

"I still have problems with depression," she said. "You feel alone and like you are the only one, and then you come out here and you realize that no, you're not the only one. There are other people who are struggling like you are.

"You see how strong they are and how well they are doing, and then there may be a time you can be strong for them."

Another regular member at the CRO has been sober for eight months. He has a dual diagnosis of major depression and substance abuse disorder.

The 53-year-old, who asked that his name not be published, said this is the longest that he has been sober without being in a treatment program in his adult life.

Phyllis Park, who has a diagnosis of bipolar and schizoaffective disorder, recently made an attempt on her life. Anderson and a longtime CRO member, Shad Jay, sat with her at the hospital.

"Everybody's support is so essential for me right now," Park said. "I need it and they're there."

Although Park is taking some time off now, she has worked for four of the five years she has been a member at High Plains Independence.

"These people are my family," she said. "I have a bond with them, and I don't want to let them down.

"I couldn't make it if I didn't know I had this stability to refer back to, to come and be accepted, and to be loved and cared for and sometimes corrected. Sometimes I need that," Park said.

 </figure>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostAn agency that provides support for people with severe mental illnesses in Hays is in danger of temporarily closing due to a paperwork error and it is seeking donations to stay open.High Plains Independence in Hays supports people with mental illnesses, many of whom are on disability and older than 65. All of the organization's services are free.The agency, which is one of eight consumer-run organizations across the state, provides a drop-in facility, support groups in Hays and Great Bend, as well as regular visits to the state mental hospital in Larned.After a recent audit of the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability, which funds CROs, High Plains Independence was informed it had not filed the necessary 990 forms with the IRS to maintain its nonprofit status, Ginna Anderson, High Plains Independence executive director, said.Anderson was never notified by the state, the IRS, or the High Plains' accountant that the organization had not filed a 990 form since at least 2014."I took over in 2011, and I have been asking the state, which was our funder, for a directors' meeting or training because I just fell into it and I have been doing the best I can with what I know, and trying to help people maintain recovery," she said."I would say because of the large turnover with [the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability], no one ever asked about it," she said.All employees of the High Plains Independence, including Anderson, have mental illnesses and are sometimes referred to as consumers.She added, "You can't do what you don't know. None of us is educated in finances and tax laws. That is what you have those other people for."Without its nonprofit status, High Plains Independence can't receive funding from the state until it is reinstated.High Plains Independence has an annual budget of $125,000. The organization employs three part-time staff, including Anderson. It also rents a building at 1200 Canterbury and maintains a transportation vehicle.The organization has about $12,000 a month in expenses, and Anderson said it does not have enough money in the bank to make its August payroll.Anderson said the organization is working with a new local accountant and has already started the process of filing the necessary paperwork with the state and IRS to regain its nonprofit status.However, that process may take three to six months to complete.Who does High Plains Independence help?Anderson said she is concerned this vital resource for people who struggle with mental illness might have to close until the organization can regain its state funding, leaving people who depend on the support at High Plains in the lurch.Consumer-run organizations were created to reduce rehospitalization. The CRO's, as they are also known, started as drop-in centers. When they began, they were only required to have a TV, and coffee and tea.&nbsp;Today, High Plains Independence offers daily support groups and activities Mondays through Saturdays, and outreach into the Hays community and beyond.The organization serves about 35 members in its Hays location. It provides a support group for another 10 regular attendees to a weekly support group in Great Bend.More people are served through Anderson's monthly visits to the state hospital.One of the faithful members of the High Plains spent years in Larned. He told Anderson he had hope for the first time in his life when he heard Anderson speak at Larned."You never know what impression you make on people," she said.High Plains Independence has also taken over peer support of the&nbsp;Assisted Outpatient Treatment program in Hays that was formally funded through a grant held by the local National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI.Anderson is a part of a team that supports people in the community who have had repeated hospitalizations or encounters with law enforcement because of their mental illnesses. Anderson provides peer support and a connection to resources at High Plains Independence.&nbsp;Assisted Outpatient Treatment&nbsp;is also aimed at reducing rehospitalization and incarceration for people who have severe mental illnesses."People stay out of the hospital because they can come out here to a pleasant environment where they can own their feelings and they can get supporting tools so they can work through issues," she said."They come to find out that what they are dealing with, other people have dealt with, and they are not alone," she said.Because of the challenges of their mental illnesses, some members of the CRO have lost touch with their families. The CRO hosts holiday events and birthday parties. The center has even hosted memorial services.Without High Plains Independence, some of the organization's members would be in Larned State Hospital or maybe not taking their medication, Anderson said.Anderson noted that hospitalization or jail is much more expensive than the support services provided by CROs.Although High Plains Independence does not require its members to take medication or engage in other mental health treatment, it encourages its members to do what they need to do to maintain mental health."If I ask someone if they have taken their meds this morning, it's not from an authority. Mental health support program in danger of temporary closure because of filing error

The Hays Police Department announced the launch of "Ride Right Hays," a new public safety and awareness campaign designed to educate residents on the proper and lawful operation of Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs), All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), golf carts, motorized scooters, and bicycles within the city.

The initiative comes in response to the increasing popularity of these vehicles.

The campaign's primary goal is to proactively prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users by providing clear, concise information about current regulations.

In June 2024, the Hays City Commission passed Ordinance No. 4052, which repealed the requirement for annual city registration and inspection of UTVs.

While this simplifies the process for owners, the Hays Police Department stresses that all other state and local traffic laws remain in full effect.

Key regulations for UTVs, also known as side-by-sides, and golf carts that operators must follow include possessing a valid driver's license, being at least 18 years of age, and maintaining liability insurance on the vehicle.

Furthermore, UTVs must have all legally required safety equipment, such as headlamps, stop lamps, turn signals, and seatbelts.

Operation is permitted on city streets but is strictly prohibited on state highways, including Vine Street (U.S. Highway 183), except for the purpose of crossing the highway.

"Our community's safety is our top priority," said Hays Chief of Police Don Scheibler. "With the growing number of these vehicles on our streets, public education is more critical than ever. The 'Ride Right Hays' campaign is about providing clear, simple information to empower residents to make safe choices, follow the law, and prevent accidents before they happen. We want people to enjoy these vehicles, but we want them to do it responsibly."

The "Ride Right Hays" campaign aims to eliminate confusion regarding other types of vehicles as well, including bicycles and motorized scooters.

Riders of both are reminded that they are often subject to the same rules of the road as motor vehicles.

This includes obeying all traffic signs and signals, riding in the direction of traffic, and using lights at night as required by law.

Over the coming weeks, the Hays Police Department will share detailed information, infographics, and safety tips across its social media platforms using the hashtag RideRightHays.

The department will also be participating in Pedal Patrol in the Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 13, at Aubel-Bickle Optimist Park, 30th and Sherman Ave., to teach children safety tips and ensure safe riding around Hays. 

During the event the department will also provide bicycle safety inspections. Residents are encouraged to follow the department's social media pages including, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/cityofhayspoliceandfire/">Facebook</a>, Instagram, and LinkedIn, for Ride Right Hays information, and visit the <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/">City of Hays website</a> for full ordinances.

• Thirty-Five&nbsp;Hansen Scholar Scholarships&nbsp;with annual stipends of $6,500 renewable for three additional years if criteria established by the Scholarship Committee are met.&nbsp; Recipients must attend an accredited four-year public, private or church related Kansas college or university.

The student should be an active participant in extracurricular school and community activities, display good citizenship, leadership, and moral integrity.

Students planning to enter the competition for Leaders of Tomorrow, Hansen Scholar or Hansen Student scholarships must register at their school and take the qualifying test at locations to be announced.&nbsp; Information on all scholarships has been sent to qualifying area schools.&nbsp; Tentative test dates have been set for&nbsp;September 8, 10 and 11, 2025.

Annual Hansen Scholarship Program announced

At around 11:40 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, the Hays Police Department responded to a report of domestic violence at a residence in Hays.

The report was made by a minor inside the home, claiming a physical altercation was underway between and a man and woman, and that the man was in possession of a firearm. Two other minors were identified to be inside.

After initial contact with the man, he refused to exit or allow others to exit, and the immediate area was secured by responding officers.

The HPD Special Situational Response Team, along with the Kansas Highway Patrol Special Response Team, including a crisis negotiator, were called to assist.

Following negotiations with the subject, the adult woman was allowed to exit the residence at around 1:22 a.m. Sunday. She was found to have trauma to the head and was taken to HaysMed for evaluation. She was later transferred to a Wichita hospital.

At around 6:42 a.m., the minors were allowed to exit. They were not found to have been physically harmed and have been released to family.

As negotiations continued, a gunshot was heard by officers.

Electronic surveillance was used to investigate inside. Officers then made entry.

The subject was found to have what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was declared deceased on the scene at around 8:15 a.m. by responding EMS.

Pending notification to the family, the name of the subject and the location of the incident will not be released at this time.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations has been requested to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Even though I am a grandpa, I try hard not to look or act like the stereotypical, frumpy, old grandpa who thinks the world should function like it did when I was a kid, but allow me to digress a little in starting this week’s column.

I’m the oldest of five kids, and my nearest sibling in age is six years younger than me, so growing up, I had to learn to amuse myself, a skill sadly missing in many kids today.

 I’ll come clean here that I love my smart phone. I’m a FOX News junkie, and enjoy surfing through FOX News or Facebook on my phone when sitting in front of TV in the evening or when waiting on my wife in a store parking lot, so I understand the draw. 

But when I was a kid and on my own, I learned to build hay forts in the “haymow,” shoot blackbirds along the creek with mom’s old .410 shotgun, and to catch crawdads under the bridge that crossed the creek in our pasture.

That bridge had metal sides that were three or four feet high and was built like a tank, but the huge, thick wooden planks that were the floor, were not fastened down and just laid in place, so there were big gaps between them. I learned I could lay on the planks looking through at the creek below, and catch crawdads with a long, forked willow stick.

 The water below was shallow and clear, and the crawdads would lay in the mud there. I’d cut the forked ends of the stick three or four inches long, and when I jabbed the forked end across an unsuspecting crawdad, they would flex enough to trap it between them like a clamp, and I could often raise the captured crawdad up through the planks, where I’d pull it out, toss it back and try again.

In the first chapter of Ecclesiastes 1 in the Bible, verse 9 says “What has been, will be again, what has been done, will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun.” 

Well, guess what. Speaking of crawdads, awhile back, the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) discovered a new crawdad species in Kansas. The Aquatic Nuisance Species Program and Ecological Services section of the KDWPT recently funded a university project focused on sampling Kansas lakes for invasive “crayfish,” (which is the politically correct name for the little buggers.) This study establishes processes that can be used to monitor both native and invasive crayfish in Kansas, something that has never been done before, and a process that some questioned the need for.&nbsp;

During capturing efforts at McPherson State Fishing Lake, the need for this process was validated early-on, as sampling found multiple Rusty Crayfish, an invasive species never before found in Kansas. Both males and females of various ages were found, indicating a reproducing population is established in McPherson State Fishing Lake. Rusty Crayfish are large aggressive crayfish known to attack the feet of unsuspecting swimmers, and outcompete native fish and crayfish for forage that acts as important cover for select prey species.

Since Rusty Crayfish most likely arrived in Kansas as fishing bait, this a perfect place to remind everyone of the Kansas regulation regarding the use of live fishing bait here in our state. 

Quoting from the regulations, “Live baitfish, crayfish, leeches, amphibians and mussels, except for bluegill and green sunfish from non-designated aquatic nuisance waters, and baitfish, crayfish, leeches, amphibians and mussels from designated nuisance waters, may be caught and used as live bait only within the common drainage where caught.”

 In summary and in layman’s terms, this means, use wild bait ONLY where you catch it. DO NOT take it anywhere it couldn’t have gotten to on its own. This will help keep aquatic nuisance species like our “new” friend the Rusty Crayfish, from spreading to other Kansas waters.

Kansas House Democrats stopped in Hays for their inaugural Fight Back Tour, a statewide effort to engage with Kansans.

The Friday event at Glassman Bird Law featured discussions on tax policy, rural health care access and concerns about federal overreach, including martial law and ICE enforcement.

Medicaid expansion was a key topic as Rep. Susan Ruiz, D-Shawnee, said Kansas will face penalties from federal changes even though it has not expanded the program.

"We were told by the Feds that all the states that did not expand Medicaid were not going to get hit. Well, that is a lie," Ruiz said.

Ruiz said insurers such as Aetna have left the Affordable Care Act marketplace, and premiums are expected to rise.

She said thousands of Kansans could lose coverage, with rural communities impacted the most.

"God forbid, you have a child that has to be in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. You have to go to Salina, and if they have to be on life support, you gotta drive them all the way to Kansas City," Ruiz said.

Rep. Stephanie Sawyer Clayton, D-Overland Park, said lawmakers tried to restore the local ad valorem tax reduction fund, which returns state money to cities and counties to offset local government costs, but the Senate blocked it. She said there are plans to try again in January.

Clayton said the Senate is proposing a bill that suggests capping property valuation increases at 7%.

"Right now, it looks pretty good. For instance, my mortgage is at 3%... I'm never getting a rate lower than that. But part of the problem is that if we cap valuations, then we end up running into major problems for newer and younger homeowners," she said.

Clayton pointed to California’s cap as an example of how such measures can create similar problems. An audience member said that capping valuation increases benefits the wealthy.

Another attendee raised concerns about unfair comparisons in the appraisal process, where modest homes are measured against larger properties.

Clayton said she sees similar issues in her district, where teardowns and new builds inflate valuations on surrounding older homes.

Clayton said there are discussions [among legislators] about raising the homestead exemption to provide tax relief, but cautioned it could create issues such as underfunding schools and infrastructure.

Several attendees voiced concern Trump could declare martial law nationwide, given gerrymandering and political retaliation in Texas and California.

Clayton said she does not expect martial law in Kansas, especially in rural areas, and that it was unlikely even in blue cities like Wichita and Kansas City.

"I'm not pleased with what's going on at the federal level, but I do not think that we will see martial law in Kansas. Lord have mercy, I hope I'm right on that, but instinctually I don't think we will," she said.

Attendees also raised concerns about Trump deploying ICE, Homeland Security and local law enforcement as militarized forces.

Legislators discussed ICE activity in Lenexa, part of Ruiz's district, and how the community has rapid response teams that document ICE actions with photos and videos to share on social media.

One attendee suggested pushing local governments to prevent agencies from partnering with ICE.

"A good place to start is to pass a resolution from the cities and county commissions, if you have a city or county that would do that, and say 'we oppose all these things, '" the attendee said.

Clayton said people are most likely to trust political information from their neighbors and encouraged attendees to talk with those around them about the issues raised.

The event opened with an overview of the Kansas Legislature and how Democrats remain in the super minority but only need five more seats to break it.

Other speakers at the event included Rep. Mike Amyx, D-Lawrence, Dennis McKinney, former State Treasurer and former House Democratic leader and former state Democratic Rep. Eber Phelps.

Chairwoman of the Ellis County Democratic Party, Anna Towns, introduced the speakers at the event.
